CMOS settings wrong

Q: CMOS settings wrong

I have recently installed a new power supply due to the fact that the other one had seen the light. Now when I try to start up the system, the POST test is just fine but then I get the message that there is a CMOS setting wrong. (See picture) The system boots in windows and everything looks okay except the fact that my mouse and keyboard are not working. Any advice on whats going on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On the motherboard you will see a battery like in a watch but larger (usually) I would say that the battery needs replacing....take it out take it with you to any PC store and get a replacement..their not expensive...Put it in and restart the PC.

Since I reinstall win XP home a few months ago, on each first bootup it stops on black screen saying:-
1. Cmos Settings Wrong
2. Sett Date & Time
3. F1 for setup
4. F2 st default values & continue
I did all the above several times, but the same thing happens on next bootup from cold, it starts normally on a REstart.
Can it be corrected somehow? ...........thanx .....nick

message while booting up. Very shortly after I boot up the PC, I receive a black
screen that points to "CMOS Settings Wrong" "Date/Time not set".

Press F1 to run SETUP, Press F2 to load default values and continue. Or something like that. At first I just pressed F2, it booted up normally, except my date and time were wrong. Went ahead and fixed it, np. A few days and some restarts later (doesn't do it during EVERY restart, but definitely some), I boot up and get the same message. This time I hit F1 and put in the correct date and time. I hit the save hotkey and it boots up normally with the time and date I just entered, np.

Basically, same problem, a few restarts or so days later, same thing all over again, regardless of if I F2 or F1. Most of them were normal restarts, nothing strange, although this time I was playing CoD: MW2 when the game froze up/sound skipping, so I turned the PC off, tried to turn the PC back on, and nothing... I know the mobo had power, the mobo light was on. Although pushing the power button did nothing.. I turned off the back power switch, replugged the power plug, turned the power switch back on, the mobo light lit back up, pushed the power button on the front, nothing... Tried this for a lil while with no luck. Ended up going to watch some TV, then I heard the boot sound and it had booted back up.

Whats the deal? I heard somewhere it might be a bad BIOS battery? Possibly dying on me? After a quick glimpse I couldn't find anything that resembled one on the mobo, but it's a bit late/dark and I might have missed it.

This is a desktop. Plenty of cooling, and never overclocked. Only thing that was done to the PC was took out a bad ram stick a few weeks or so ago.

My computer is fairly new, but just out of the blue it decided to not let me turn it on. I get a black screen with a bunch of words, the ones I noticed are: CMOS Settings wrong, and CMOS Memory size wrong. Then it has press F1 to run set up or press F2 to load default values and continue. I understand this may have something to do with a battery, but I cant see it being dead already, Iíve only had the computer for two months if that. Just wondering if there is something else I can try before opening it up and changing a battery. If you can help, I thank you!

Everytime I boot my pc up i am getting a black screen which says 'CMOS Settings Wrong' and gives me several options, however, only 'F1 to run Set up' works. The other options such as F2 to load default value and continue, fails to work.

Once i press F1, a blue 'Ambios New Set up Utility' screen appears which allows me to change date and time but I cannot escape the page apart from going back to the Set up and choosing Ssve and Esc. Then the machine boots up normally and works fine, until I switch off and on again.

A:CMOS settings wrong F1 to run setup

Does it happen to say anything more specific? Like which CMOS setting is wrong? Some computer complain even when you change the peripherals like remove a PS/2 mouse.

What if you actually press F1, load the defaults in there and save the settings? There may be several kinds of defaults you can load.

If it still keeps forgetting the settings even after replacing the battery (with a new one I hope (and the new battery is the right type and is making contact)), then it may be the motherboard that has gone bad. Not much you can do about that.

Maybe try updating the system BIOS in the very unlikely case that it is some BIOS glitch that corrupts the settings..

My PC left unused for over a month, when I turned it on today, the screen read after three short beep sounds:

CMOS Battery Low
CMOS Memory Size Wrong

While I shut it down and restarted again, it said:

CMOS Settings Wrong
CMOS Memory Size Wrong

The system restore could be set back to an earlier date, while safe mode was O.K. But I just wasn't able to go into the Windows welcome page. The last time I used my PC was perfect, and it didn't have any problem for several years.

I'd appreciate very much if anyone who can tell me what happened?

A:Why "CMOS Memory Size, Settings Wrong?"

My first guess is that your CMOS battery on your motherboard is dead and just needs replaced. Open up your computer case and locate the CMOS battery. It's a large watch battery, usually about the size of a quarter, and is silver. Once you find it, pry it out and take it to Radio Shack or somewhere similar to get the same battery. Pop the new one in and see if that fixes it.

Here's an example, the silver disk towards the top is what you're looking for.

What does it mean when the screen that comes up before windows xp comes up... the black screen that tells you about your system comes up with a message like this

What does this mean? How did it get this way cause I never made changes, and how can i make adjustments. When I hit F1 to enter set up it brings me to the standard CMOS set up. The date is January 21, 2003. I seem unable to change the date. On exit and continuing on to windows and opening up to my section, the clock is wrong as well as the date... it also reads January 2005. Sounds like your battery is getting weak. Pick up a new one and put it in. Take the old one with you so you get the right one. After you put it in go into the bios check your settings, then exit and save. Suggest you go into bios and write down the settings before you remove the battery

When I boot my XP system I am getting a "CMOS is wrong" DOS message (during all the other normal DOS startup chatter). What does this mean?

I'm not sure if this is related or not, but I have been having system crashes where the computer would either go to blue screen or go to a black screen which required yanking the power and restarting. Often the system would restart okay without a hitch, yet most recently I am completely down. The bootup process freezes after the typical DOS messages , and freezes on the CMOS message.

I figured if I changed HD's I would be fine. So I am in the process of installing a fresh XP on a new SATA drive. Yet I did still see the CMOS warning when I booted and I'm thinking maybe I'm doing the wrong thing here to fix this problem.

Thank you for your input.

P4 as any cpu's ( AMD ) runs on a "formula" which goes like this.
Front Side Bus ( FSB ) X Internal cpu multiplier= speed of your cpu
Now to your case the 100 is the FSB and 15 is the multiplier so you get a 1.5 Gig P4
1. when you set the cpu clock ratio (= internal cpu multiplier) you acctually underclocked the P4 ( again back to the formula ..100 X 8= 800 Mhz P4) so no wonder that it was slower then a P3
2. If my memory serves me right you acctually have a AUTO DETECT PCI CLK not PCL , which acctually tell the CMOS that it will auto detect the speed on which the devices that use the PCI bus will run
3. In order to reduce the EMI ( electro magnetic interference ) newer motherboards incorporate a SPREAD SPECTRUM which basically try's to minimize the "intereference " inside the computer ( signal wise)
For overclocking tips and how to go to and check out there web site for all the info regarding o/c'ing the P4

Nvidia Geforce 6200 AGP3 Card 512mb
Creative 128bit sound card
Gigabyte GA-7VM400M-P 1.x Mobo 333fsb
Earthlink DSL 6000bps
Floppy drive, 56K dialup modem, Optical Mouse, MS Elite Keyboard, Lighted Black Case

My computer won't boot into either drive. I went into the cmos and saw it was set up for SATA and RAID. I have neither on my pc. When I changed the settings I still couldn't boot. I went back into the CMOS and discovered that the old settings hadn't changed. I cliked Save Settings each time left the CMOS.

How do I fix this?

A:Cmos settings won't save

Normally, this type of thing is caused by a bad CMOS battery. When you see the time and date not showing right, it's a sure sign, and another is a lot of changes not being saved, errors, bad behavior in general.

The non-booting is not usually seen- so, I would not be surprised if there is another problem but you need to rule out the battery.

You COULD borrow a battery from a good working computer. (Doing that will result in the Default settings put in place on that computer- as well as yours)

It will not hurt to replace the battery but do buy a new one- after replacement, give the battery a half hour with the power cord plugged in but not running the computer.

To change battery, here are some how-to-do-it steps:

The process is very much the same for any tower type computer. Just be very careful, you do not want to slip and scratch the m otherboard! Use a very thin, very small scredriver or nail file, something you can lift the battery up with. If it is a stand-up type, just reach in and pull it out, there is a little tab to unlock should see that info in the page.

You will have to reset the CMOS time, date and any other user settings you had......

Time to get the motherboard manual out- do you have it to follow- I would advise you to!

A:Screen Capture CMOS Settings

The only way I've ever been able to take a screenshot of that area is to either use a digital camera or KVM over IP. KVM over IP means I am remotely using the machine from another machine - and it requires some special hardware to do so. We use Avocent for our KVM over IP needs - but if this is a personal setup I doubt this will be a viable solution for you. Another method you could try is some sort of VM - but then all the info in your CMOS would be fabricated within the VM container so that wouldn't be useful for you either.

Hi I would suggest you to try Startup Repair.

Startup Repair is a Windows 7 recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting correctly. When you run Startup Repair, it scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so your computer can start correctly.
If you have a Windows 7 installation disc, you need to restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc. If you do not restart your computer from the disc, the option to repair your computer will not appear.

If you have a Windows 7 installation disc:

1: Insert the installation disc.

2: Restart your computer.

3: Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.

4: Choose your language settings, and then click Next.

5: Click Repair your computer.

6: Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.

7: On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might

prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might

restart your computer as it makes repairs.

If Startup Repair is a preinstalled recovery option on your computer:

1: Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your

2: Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.

Do one of the following:

If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as

your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the

Windows logo appears, you will need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon

prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the

operating system you want to repair, and then press and hold F8.

3: On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your

computer, and then press ENTER. (If Repair your computer is not listed as an option,

then your computer does not include Startup Repair as a preinstalled recovery option.)

4: Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next.

5: Select a user name and enter the password, and then click OK.

6: On the System Recovery Options menu, click Startup Repair. Startup Repair might

prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem and, if necessary, it might restart

your computer as it makes repairs.

It's probably running @ 800MHz because cool'n'quiet is enabled. Disable cool'n'quiet if what you wish is to have the CPU constantly running at full speed (set power management to anything except "minimal power management").

I just installed XP Profession on a 250 GB Hitachi hard drive . . . but I must have gotten the jumper wrong. It's installed, but all it's showing is 32GB!

If I shut down and change the jumpers to show my 250GB, is that all I have to do? Or will I have to repartition it? Or what? Yikes? Or should I just change the jumper settings, and then reinstall XP?

Thanks for whatever suggestions you can give me.

A:Got the jumper settings wrong

A really old bios would give that problem, but I would guess that there is a jumper on the drive (not the usual master/slave one) that is limiting its size.
Edit: Using FAT32 would do it also.

A:What's wrong with my connection or settings?

Sorry you are having issues and welcome to the forum!

Most likely caused by a failed router/modem reboot after power outtage. If it was off long enough you may have lost all settings. Do you see your old wireless network name still via Windows?

Please reboot your router/modem and report back!

This is only happening about every 10 tenth time I start the computer. When the computer is turned on, a message is displayed (white text and black background) that the "CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad, CMOS Date/Time Note Set, Press <F4> to Run SETUP".
Windows XP is started and the time for the computer is set to January 1, 2002 01:00AM. I can manually change the date/time in Windows to the correct time. However, this is happening only occasionally. How can I prevent this from happening?
I have ran anti-virus scan and no viruses were found. Also, downloaded the latest version of Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy and scanned the computer, nothing was found. Ran Disk Defragmenter and ScanDisk and no errors were found.

I have a Dell Inspirion 15r and upgraded to Windows 10 a couple of days ago. All the touchpad gestures worked fine, 3 finger swipe up for task view, 3 down for showing the desktop. Then suddenly, this automatically changed to 3 fingers up opening search. 3 fingers down opens suddenly the settings.

The settings in the Dell touchpad app were still correct though. I did a system repair, which fixed the problem. But now, this sudden change happened again. Also reinstalling the driver didn't work. Both times this happened after putting my laptop in sleep mode.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Hi DimitriVH,
I would suggest you to update the BIOS, Video card driver and touchpad drivers in a sequence on the system for issue resolution. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section, Video card driver from Video section and touchpad driver from ‘Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices’ section onto the system and install it.
Please let me know if this helps.

I just started having random crashes on my pc. It would crash within minutes. Everytime would be random programs or bsod. I believe it's the ram as It doesn't do it when I use 1 stick at a time.

I'm using Kingston 12 gig DD3. 3x4gb sticks. I tested each stick for 4 passes in memtest86 and they all passed. This is the link to the datasheet for my ram, And if someone could help explain what settings I would need to put into my bios to get these sticks all going at once without errors would be helpfull

A:Random BSOD and programs crash, Ram settings wrong

Welcome to SevenForums.

Please upload screen shots of Memory tab using CPUz:CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
Take memtest. Run for 8 passes and test each stick in a know good slot for an additional 6 passes.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
Guide to using Memtest86+ - Geeks to Go Forums

The goal is to test all the RAM sticks and all the motherboard slots.

Check your motherboard manual to ensure the RAM sticks are in the recommended motherboard slots. Some motherboards have very specific slots required for the number of RAM sticks installed.

If you get errors, stop the test and continue with the next step.

1. Remove all but one stick of RAM from your computer (this will be RAM stick #1), and run Memtest86 again, for 7 passes.
Be sure to note the RAM stick, use a piece of tape with a number, and note the motherboard slot.
If this stick passes the test then go to step #3.

2. If RAM stick #1 has errors, repeat the test with RAM stick #2 in the same motherboard slot.
If RAM stick #2 passes, this indicates that RAM stick #1 may be bad. If you want to be absolutely sure, re-test RAM stick #1 in another known good slot.
If RAM stick #2 has errors, this indicates another possible bad RAM stick, a possible motherboard slot failure or inadequate settings.
3. Test the next stick of RAM (stick #2) in the next motherboard slot.
If this RAM stick has errors repeat step #2 using a known good stick if possible, or another stick.
If this RAM stick has no errors and both sticks failed in slot#1, test RAM stick #1 in this slot.
4. If you find a stick that passes the test, test it in all the other motherboard slots.

If Part 2 testing shows errors, and all tests in Part 3 show errors, you will need to test the RAM sticks in another computer and/or test other RAM in your computer to identify the problem.

In this way, you can identify whether it is a bad stick of RAM, a bad motherboard, or incompatibility between the sticks.

Stigma Tel high definition audio codec

My speakers have a strange buzz,& sound kinda wavy. But it seems if I turn it up louder then regularly it goes away.I have not turned them up loud for a month or so.Just started happening today. What kinda setting should I set it too?Theirs alot of different settings,I used one in the middle for awhile.I been fiddling with it & forgot just what one it was.The amp in the speakers is probably going bad.
But I got curious that maybe the bit & hz setting may have caused it.Idk,so thought I would ask.

A:I think I blew my jbl desktop speakers, wrong audio settings?

Whatever settings you make in the PC should have no affect on the speakers. It's still just an analog output and the output level can't go high enough to hurt the speakers. The buzzing is an indication of an internal problem in the speaker system.

Cud anyone help me with this

This might help, Power down, unplug power line, take out new CMOS battery reset CMOS jumpers from (1,2) to (2,3) for about 15 min. Then you replace jumpers to origial position. Replace battery and power cord and power up. let us know if this helped. good luck!

This is a first...

A friend was visiting for three days and a few things seemed to change. He shut off my monitor when not using the PC. It didn't come back on when I hit the power, so I hit the menu button and tried to get the thing up & running. I didn't get into the monitor's menu.

That's the only thing that was done differently. Now XP asks for the CMOS setting every time I boot up. It asks for standard (F1) or advanced (F2). When I do the standard setting, my computer starts back to the year 2002 at 12pm.

How can I get things back to normal, when I turn the PC on and it boots up in XP like always?

A:CMOS setting: XP won't boot w/o going through CMOS

If the date changes, chances are that the CMOS battery needs to be replaced. Just a co-incidence on timing and your friend, I'd say.

It looks like it is out of Aero mode or something, but Aero troubleshooter found no problem & everything else is fine. I was having an issue with a video game for PC (full screen) which normally fiddles with the Windows theme, but I honestly dont know.

I dont like the adjusted look, and fear this is one of those simple problems with a insanely complex solution.

Hi everybody,
since friday we have a strange problem with some clients and ARP answers. We notice that our switch recognize wrong MAC addresses on some ports.
We use wireshark to see what happens and we get the following:
5 clients: (XX:XX:XX:F7:52:75) (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) (XX:XX:XX:c2:b0:b9) (XX:XX:XX:88:c7:4f) (XX:XX:XX:7b:67:4d)
Wireshark runs on client 1 (, promiscuous mod off)
Client 5 ( send a broadcast arp question (who has - tell and client 1 ( is sending ARP replies with src = XX:XX:XX: 38:d1:a8. (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) is offline (network cable removed) and has no entry of (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) in his arp cache.
The clients run Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
Why we get these phenomenon and how can we solve it? Is there maybe a problem with some updates of the last patchday?

Thanks for the reply and kind regards

These settings should never in registry! which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back I suddenly found that I can not change the proxy settings manually The detail is that I change the auto proxy url to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change However when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back it never success and even the same when i'm sure I have cleared this url in the whole registry but it back as it never changes I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back just like it originally should be But it never works So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS AGAIN Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know Or you should let these stuffs out of the registry

Looking for advice on how to find where the touch pad settings may be hidden on this laptop I'm working on? I've looked in the control panel and there is no icon for touch pad and I've looked in the mouse settings without finding any options to change the settings for the touch pad? The laptop is an acer Aspire 5520-5912 running Vista Home Premium Service pack 2. Any ideas?

A:Can't find touch pad settings in Control Panel/Mouse settings anywhere?

Hi loki2007 Usually, Windows install it's own Microsoft Legacy Drivers for a touchpad on a laptop, and these drivers doesn't enable the "Advanced" settings that allows you to control the touchpad. In order to do that, you have to install the laptop touchpad drivers which will add that tab in the Mouse options.Download and install these drivers: me know if they install or not.

Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! It booted to that point, then my hard drive went mad clicking and crashed. This was after it being turned on and off to see if my graphics card was booting because I had no video, but it turned out I had just been downright stupid and plugged it into the onboard graphics. Anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

A:'Previous overclock settings failed, default settings enabled'

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

Hello, i have a Samsung Laptop with Windows 7 loaded and there is some software provided by Samsung, one of these "Easy Settings"
I have noticed that the setting for Express Cache Mode and Battery life Extender (and i'm sure a few others have changed) keep randomly switching to OFF when I have set them to be ON.
Has anyone had any experience of this software or have any idea why it could be doing this? I was thinking it could it be a conflict with some Winodws settings?
Any help would be great, cheers.

When I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts
up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu
and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under
Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in
addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried
switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but
gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.
Is there some way to use the old Dave file?

A:Lost settings, New user made in Documents and Settings

Hiya asd123321.

It sounds like you`ve re-installed the system from CD over the top of an existing system, giving you a fresh `Dave`. Have you recently run a repair or indeed, done a clean install ?

As a work-around, can you take the documents & favourites from the old `Dave` and put them in the new `Dave` so at least you`re back up and running again.

Q: Cmos

I have windows XP and for some reason, I got a message when booting up the other day that wouldn't finish booting like normal because my CMOS settings were wrong and my CMOS memory size was wrong. And all of a sudden it is showing that I have new hardware installed (which is actually what is already installed) but because of this message something is goofy. Who did this? I am the only person that is accessing this computer and I didn't add a thing but an update on my firewall. I have McAfee Internet Security....Please help me to know what to do - Can someone help me understand if my computer is just about to crash or something? How did I fix this problem?

The first thing to try is a new CMOS battery. They are a coin-sized silver battery held under a clip on the motherboard inside the PC.

If this battery fails, the CMOS contents get scrambled. Its worth a try first as its a cheap fix.

It could be a failed CMOS ROM, but until you eliminate a failed battery you cant tell.

I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me on the differences between CMOS vs. VGA vs. VGA CCD. Any help would be appreciated.

Your post is highly cryptic, and therefore difficult to guess just what info you want, and what it relates to.

CMOS=Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
VGA = Video Graphics Adapter (640 x 480 resolution implied)

VGA CCD = VGA as above and Charge Coupled Device

On a wild guess you are referring to video camera devices, then CMOS are cheap, but do not have the dynamic range of CCD. CMOS cameras "smear" with high contrast images.

CCD are better quality, and more expensive.

And VGA often (but not always) implies 640 x 480 resolution or that it connects to a VGA port on a PC.

The error you are receiving means the battery used to maintain the cmos settings is about gone and needs to be replaced. The battery is located on the motherboard and depending on your unit it looks similiar to a watch battery. If you have reservations about removing and replacing the battery then take the tower to a local repair shop and they will do it for you.

I was told to reset the cmos, but there aren't any jumpers on the board to reset it. Can someone "PLEASE HELP" me! So my Question is can anyone tell me how to get this computer back running again. I need to know either how to reset the cmos or just how to fix's this problem!!!!

How do I enable "AGP MASTER 1W/S WRITE" in system BIOS ?
I have Windows XP with SP 1.

Welcome to TSG!
The AGP Master 1W/S Write Enable\Disable function is not contingent on OS or update to SP1. It is a function of the motherboard and the Bios supplied by the motherboard manufacturer. Also if you have a highly proprietary unit such as Sony or Compaq you may have problems in Bios update. You will have to research your motherboard at the manufacturers website and see what is available for settings and if the setting is not available then find out if there is a bios update for your motherboard which has the switch.
Here is an article from ATI that explains a problem they are experiencing with their product and they suggest using the enabled switch.

Okay, I'm not to sure on this. I've done plenty of searching also with no luck. This is for the 5420 series but I'm sure they're probably similar. Turn the laptop over. There should be a plate above the internal fan that should come off. Once you unscrew it and take it off you should see part of the motherboard. The CMOS battery should be around there. Beware though, any static electricity that gets inside a laptop could harm it so I would do this with caution.
