Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer Crashes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread. We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.-------------------------------------------------------------Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the followingThe cleaning process is not instant. DDS logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen. A:Windows Explorer crashes, no message, then everything crashes randomly

the dump point to wininit.exe, the windows startup process, the crash was caused by the termination of a critical system thread or process which means that somehowwinint.exe was terminated and crashed your computer, all we have to do now is work out why and how the process was terminated, if it didn't happen untill you installed the graphics card it could be thaat it is doing something that is affecting wininit.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

The computer is probably infected with a virus or other malware. Post this in the Virus and Malware Removal forum:

We have started seeing this issue with our new deployments of Windows 8.1 - we have around 7 drive mappings pointing to a n EMC NAS (VNX7600) and although I can access all drive4s if I drop to the command prompt -windows explorer FAILS to display all mapped
drives. We see this issue over the VPN which would indicate this issue is somewhat related to network latency and Windows Explorer trying to enumerate and display all pertinent info such as free/used disk space.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hi all,

I really hope someone can help me out here, as this is my work box, and it will take me about a week to get everything re-installed and configured if I have to format :-(

The problem is that if I try to open windows explorer or internet explorer, they immediately crash. I suspect that this is due to spyware / virus.

I have since upgraded from service pack 2 - 3 and run scans with McAfee, Avast and SpyHunter3. Can't find anything ...
All open / save dialog boxes work fine though ... which is luckily the only way i can work now ... through firefox

Hi there.
I have the following most frustrating problem with my windows ME system:
Shortly after start-up my windows explorer crashes, my task bar freezes, and I have to use the task
manager to restart it. It then crashes again a few minutes later.
My internet explorer opens very slowly and then crashes quite quickly - I've had to switch to Netscape.
Similarly browsing my hard-disk causes a crash. Netscape isn't that reliable either - but that might not be
related.
I had gator-ware and recently uninstalled it - but I wonder if it might have damaged my system causing these
problems..
I've run a check for bots/modifications using spybot - and effected all of the changes it recommended
but I still have the same problems.
Any suggestions would be most helpful
Thanks
Claus

Yeah, hi. Anytime I try to use Windows explorer to open, you know, anything, it fails.

Event Viewer's record of the failure says something like this:

Explorer.EXE
6.0.6000.16549
46d230c5
gnwtae32.dll_unloaded
0.0.0.0
4843a500
c0000005
04502d1e
17e4
01c8d0e47eda1332

or this:

Explorer.EXE
6.0.6000.16549
46d230c5
ASKPBAR.DLL
2.3.0.1
46140f67
c0000005
00002c84
1120
01c8d0e43abd3f12

So gnwtae32.dll_unloaded or ASKPBAR.DLL is the problem maybe?

A:Windows Explorer crashes

nevermind. It was gnwtae32.dll doing it. If anybody finds this post Googling or something, I used Security Task Manager to fix the problem.

Also, sometimes the whole desktop background turns white and the programs have the white overlay too, and the taskbar crashes.

Additionally, my taskbar experiences lag too, (e.g. the glowing icons stays glowing even after when I hover it for a few seconds) and nothing is clickable at that point. These problems only started yesterday, and the whole startup process has also dragged for a minute longer than before.

This problem has been fairly annoying, as it wastes a lot of time, and most importantly the program Steam (for gaming) isn't working anymore as it gets stuck while logging in, and I'm sure it isn't because of my internet connection problems, as internet browsing works flawlessly.

I've tried configuring msconfig to start with only windows processes and nothing else, but the problem persists and I'm not sure if it is from some program or virus. I've ran a scan using Norton Internet Security, but nothing comes up as hostile. Might I add, Norton has been lagging severely too, and the anti-virus program becomes unresponsive sometimes. I have found that a process "svchost.exe" which takes up a lot of memory than usual, ranging from 100K to 250K memory, which wasn't the case a few days before. Ending the process results in Windows Explorer crashing and restarting with the basic scheme without transparent windows and taskbar, and it terminates my wireless connection as well. I have yet to try running in safe mode though.

My PC is still running other applications smoothly, such as games like Sleeping Dogs, but sometimes the entire windows freezes and nothing is operational for awhile. I am definitely sure it is not my hardware, as my computer runs i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz with 12 GB of RAM. I use Win7 Home Premium 64-bit, and it is a HP Pavilion desktop too. Please help, and thank you in advance!

Using Norton may be part of your problem. It is a known resource hog and has become unpopular with most computer geeks. So, I would suggest replacing it with a different AV program; Avira has a free version with a nag screen and a paid version which I use. There are several other well respected AV programs out there, both free and pay for use.

With that said, try Kaspersky Rescue Disk;
http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208282173

AND

MalwareBytes AntiMalware, aka MBAM;
http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/
(choose the Free version on the right side of the screen)

When I use windows explorer to copy files from dvd to hard disc, it shows a green progress bar on the address bar while its searching for images to put into the folder icons.

Sometimes if I start a copy and paste of files while its doing that, it crashes. Can I turn off the picture finder for the dvd drive only?

This started slowly a couple weeks ago The only changes I recall between when it worked and when it broke was maybe some Windows Updates I have no idea which ones And of course automatic database updates to my security suite software Windows Home Premium x Security is Kaspersky Internet Security version only reason I upgraded from v is that is not compatible with Win The basic problem is crashes Explorer x64 Windows that Windows Explorer ie the system shell and file manager will crash So far as I can tell no crash data is being sent x64 Windows Explorer crashes back to MS At least of the crash dialogs just say quot close and restart the program quot This can happen when trying to right-click on something to pull up the Properties or Rename dialog or any other context-menu command It can happen when pressing F to rename a file Depending on x64 Windows Explorer crashes exactly where I am in Windows seems to determine if it's just a file-manager explorer exe process that crashes or the entire GUI When it's the entire GUI most of it restarts but some items sometimes fail to re-show in the Taskbar and or system tray Over all it does not seem to matter how long Windows has been up but the longer it is up the more likely it is that it'll crash Possibly related to this is that I cannot use sleep hibernation Windows becomes unstable when resuming from sleep or hibernation I have contacted Microsoft about that and after several weeks of back-and-forth via email and telephone the problem has been archived as unresolved

Hi folks,
My windows Explorer crashes every time I try to open My Documents folder. the error message comes up and tell me: Data Execution Prevention-Microsoft Windows. To help protect your computer, windows has closed this program: Windows Explorer. Now this only seems to happen on one folder.
A lot of times, it shuts all my browser windows, but they do return. I have scanned it several times and it says there is no infection in the program, so I am stumped and am asking how we might fix this issue??
Thank you all,

A:Windows Explorer crashes . . .

You probably have an invalid file in the folder, or you have a corrupted context menu entry for that folder.

Try Safe Mode to see if you get access to the folder.

This now happens everytime i try to open Windows Explorer or start moving through My Computer. The accompaning error message usually refers to application error EXPLORER and and error in module ad2mpgdmux.dll.

If i look in the event viewer under applications it also mentions a fault in module ad2mpgdmux.dll

Under system it mentions the IMAPI cd-burning COM service entered the stopped state.

As soon as i clear the error message, explorer clears, and then restarts itself

Hi there Kurt4, you may be infected. Try a couple of these free, online scanners to see if anything has slipped by your protection:(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asphttp://housecall.trendmicro.comhttp://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.htmlhttp://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtmlhttp://onlinescan.avast.com/http://ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Hi,I don't see anything suspicious here..It seems to mostly happen when the folder contains video files.Well, I guess you are dealing with this bug in explorer related with shmedia.dll. This one is responsible to make a preview of the avi/video files and that may explain why your explorer crashes when you attempt to open a folder where a lot of videofiles are present. We can disable this, so do next.. Go to start > run and copy and paste next in the field:regsvr32 /u shmedia.dllHit enter. Then reboot your computer. After reboot, look if you're still having the same problem.

Help is much abliged, as I've been getting this message from time to time. It isn't every day, but somehow it just happens from time to time. Nothing when I'm doing in particular either, whether I am searching files, or just going on Firefox it pops up with that error. I replaced the file causing the problem (DLL) and it didn't work. I thought it did because it didn't pop up for about a week, but nope. What should I do?

Best regards,
Alex

When is the last time you have done any virus and malware scans?

Hello OneDarkLord and welcome to Seven Forums.

Run a full scan with your antimalware suite of choice to rule out any malware issues. Since no antimalware product is 100% effective 100% of the time, I'd follow up with a couple of free on-demand scanners just in case your primary scan missed something. Some of the recommended free products are Malwarebytes | Hitman Pro | ESET | HouseCall | Superantispyware.

If your computer is malware free I'd next run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) The SFC will attempt to repair damaged or corrupt system files. If problems are found, run the scan at least 3 times, rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If this doesn't fix Windows Explorer some folks might recommend a Repair Install. That's certainly an option but you may want to read through this Microsoft Answers forum thread. It's about 28 pages long but offers some additional things to try to repair Windows Explorer.

I just got a new laptop a week or so ago. It's a ThinkPad Z60t. One problem I've already noticed several time is that Windows Explorer crashes randomly...so far it's been when I try to open a folder containing pictures, but I'm unsure if that really has anything to do with it since it's very random.

Once it crashes and I try again, it's fine.

This is on WinXP SP2 with all current updates, etc. All I've really installed since I bought the computer is security software such as AVG, AdAware, Security Task Manager, etc as well as a couple Adobe programs. Also Firefox and Thunderbird, but that's about it. However, I'm pretty sure that I had this happen at least once before the majority of that was even installed, so I don't think it should be related to any of it.

Any ideas?

A:Windows explorer crashes as soon as I log in.

Looks like your pretty clean, there are a few things you can remove with hijack, the best thing to do is run a repair.

--The following was quoted from 'http://forum.msi.com.tw', I did not write this, nor will I take any kind of credit--
The following step by step procedure shows you how to do the repair. Note, that you will need the CD key that came with your Windows disk to complete this procedure.

1. Make sure boot order in BIOS is set to floppy (if you have one), cd/dvd, and then the HDD your original Windows was installed on.

2. Insert your original Windows CD into your cd/dvd drive (a slipstreamed cd with SP will also workif you have one). If the Windows Installion menu appears, select Install Windows.

3. If that menu does not appear, go to Start, Turn Off Computer, and then select Restart. After the POST, you will see a prompt, "Press any key to boot from cd..."
so press the space key (any other key will also work).

4. Let Windows setup continue.

5. After a short while you will see an option to repair your Windows using the Recovery Console. Do NOT select this option. Just continue.

6. Soon after this you will see a message "Searching for a previous Windows Installation".

7. When Setup finds your previous Windows installion you will be given an option to Repair that installation. Follow the prompt on the screen, i.e, press R to repair.

8. Now just let setup continue until it is complete and you see your desktop.

9. Then, go to Windows Update (Start, All Programs, Windows Update) and let it search for and install any available service packs, and/or other updates.

10. Lastly, if you have any drivers that are wish to use other than the ones in Windows, just install them in the normal fashion.

Now your Windows is repaired and fully updated, and hopefully the problems you saw previously have been fixed.

As far as your hijack this file, I'm sure someone here can help you with that better than I can.

My storage drive which I hold my movies, music and shows for some reason always crashes since this morning. When I want to go look in Windows Explorer crashes (not Internet Explorer). "Windows Explorer has stopped working" "...trying to find a solution... restarting Explorer". It doesn't reset my computer which I am thankful for, it just closes the window. It is only with this hard drive and I seem to be able to run things FROM the hard drive (such as running videos already on stream through TVersity, music in iTunes), I just cant 'explore' the hard drive myself. It is really annoying because I need to be able to sort all the stuff out. Such as placing new torrents in my stream files and editing them and such. Please help and thanks so much.

Hi sonic and welcome

we need to do some digging to find the cause
can you type eventvwr in search? go to the windows logs>application tab.

You need to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column) that say app hang, app crash, etc.

when you find them use the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search) to make a screen shot of them and the attachment icon (shaped like a paper clip) in the reply form to upload them

Happens many times lately. Usually when I go to running a program or am ready to reboot my computer. When it happens all my open folders close, my desktop re-arranges itself, and sometimes my desktop disappears and I am left with an empty desktop where I can only reboot.

This does not happen very often, but lately once or twice a day. Overall I have a decent computer but can't figure out why this happens. It is not a big issue, but would be nice to know why it happens.

If I open one or two instances of WE I get and error message 'the memory could not be read'. If I don't close the message explorer stays open but loses some functionality (like picture icons) and slows down, sometimes ot the point of not working at all. If I do close the error message explorer closes entirely.

Any ideas for me?

Hi all,

Needing some help diagnosing a problem. I have reviewed a couple of postings on here (obtained via google search) but they do not solve my problem.

3 days ago I updated my windows system (comprised of many updates) and I also installed MS Project 2007. Ever since then I have been experiencing problems with Windows Explorer crashing.

Things I have tried:-

I ran MSConfig and disabled all non-MS services - this didnt solve the problem.

I tried to run Memory Diagnostics (run on restart) - but my laptop doesnt restart properly, it just hangs and windows doesnt start up.

I've ran sfc /scannow and it tells me I've got file corruption, but that it is unable to fix.

It crashes when I look through 'My documents', haven't experienced the crash in any other scenario.....yet.

When win explorer crashes, I dont get the option to 'check for a solution', it just forces a restart.

Can anyone help

Thanks

A:Windows Explorer Crashes

Perform a system restore to a date prior to problems. And test if system is running fine then.
Install the windows updates one at a time and test again.
Finally install MS PROJECT 2007 again and test again.

Now you know what's causing the problem.

I've encountered a serious problem concerning command prompt and a few .mp4 files...

Using a formula I found elsewhere, I attempted to combine some of my video files using command prompt. The formula being "copy /B ?C:\movie1.mpg? + ?C:\movie2.mpg? + ?C:\movie3.mpg? ?C:\completemovie.mpg?." I realized that I was fusing .mp4 files, not .mpg files, though I figured it shouldn't have mattered. After successfully completing the combining process, I tried opening the folder with the file inside it. I saw the file and thought "awesome, it worked!" but two seconds later a window appeared saying "Windows Explorer has stopped working"... and now every time I try to go to that folder, Windows Explorer crashes. I've tried deleting the file, and then deleting the entire folder, but the same thing happened... any help would be greatly appreciated.

SP1 is not the answer. I'm running Vista Ultimate, SP1, and am getting frequent Windows Explorer crashes. An example:

Another example, a few seconds later, after WE restarted:

If nothing seems to be working even in safe mode, then please read and follow all instructions in the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". You may have performed some of these steps already. If you can't perform a step, then skip and continue with the next. In step #9 there are instructions for downloading HijackThis and creating a log. (This is a self-extracting version which will automatically install HJT in the proper location.) If HijackThis will not run, try renaming it. Open the HijackThis Folder, find the HijackThis.exe file, right-click on it and select rename. Type Scanner.exe and hit "Enter". Double-click on Scanner.exe (which is still HijackThis) and then run your scan. If needed, change the .exe to something else such as .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr. Example: Scanner.bat or Scanner.comWhen you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day. Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. Please include the top portion of the HijackThis log that lists version information. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team. Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

I have been getting a lot of windows explorer crashes lately.

I use C cleaner and malware bytes to keep clean. I also uses Avast for Virus scanner.

I installed Hijack this but can't seem to get a log file out of it. There is a message that alerts me to change something in hosts. I can't find a a way to run a command line like previous windows versions.

Any time I open a file containing an MPG file,Windows Explorer crashes. It only does this with movie files and NEVER with any other kind of file. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? The only reason I've gotten is an Oxc0000005, which seems pretty generic, and a dscinemaaudiodecoder.dll.

Is it possible to reinstall just Windows Explorer, or is there something else corrupted? It seems to have started after I installed IE8.

A:Windows Explorer crashes

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove IE8. This will roll you back to your previous IE.

ok...my mum called me over bc i usually fix her basic computer problems, but this time im rather stumped...Every time i try to run any program to help, it says Windows Explorer is not responding, furthermore, i cannot access the internet. When i try to access the network connections, it says to make sure Network Connections is running.

Also, i just deleted a trojan, i cannot recall the name, but AVG couldnt delete it. I saw it was located in the temp internet files folder, so i just cleared it. It also said there was a change in kernel32, but i've been told thats rather common.

She has XP Home SP2, and i dont know what else would be helpful.

Thank you very much to anyone who responds.

I bought a new laptop that came with 8.1 pre-installed.

Yesterday, I transferred file from my old laptop (Windows 7), using WD Smartware. WD Smartware is WD's file backup software. I was transferring pics, videos and documents.

After the transfer was complete, I discovered that my Windows Explorer no longer functions and crashes. The "Right-Click" feature crashes as well.

Here is a Screen shot of what I get when I select Windows Explorer.

How can I repaired or download the Windows Explorer program ?
TIA.

A:Windows Explorer Crashes !

I did just come across a very nice alternative 3rd Party program.

Download FileExplorer.exe free - Windows File Explorer

I still would like to repair/reinstall the original Windows 8.1 Windows Explorer.

Hi,

Every time I try to access my external hard drive via My Computer or Windows Explorer it crashes and closes.

This is the Windows Explorer error signature:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: xvid.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00042c42

I can play my multimedia files on the (music, video, etc.) through windows media player, etc. And I have no problem saving, copying, moving etc. files to the drive.

What other information do you need to help me resolve this?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,Recently my computer has been experiencing some weird activity. Randomly when browsing through folders explorer seems to hang and want to restart. It doesn't make the whole computer restart, but refreshes explorer and closes open folders etc. I've searched for infections and have come up empty handed. Ran AVG and saw this come up and am not sure what the meaning or reason why its coming up See: http://imgur.com/nMFXM Any advice on what the cause may be? I have done some searching and have only found people saying thumbnail view is the culprit or bad Dvix codecs being the issue. I have done the walk through's and am still experiencing the issue. Please help. Thanks

Explorer.exe faults due to memory access issues in module atiumdag.dll

As such, I'd suggest the following steps:
1. Download the latest version of the ATI drivers (NOT the Catalyst Control Center) for your video card from http://www.ati.com
2. Uninstall (through Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program) all ATI stuff on your system.
3. Install the downloaded drivers and test to see if that's fixed things for you.

I have two home computers networked together. Both run XP at SP1.

I use shared areas on the hard disks to transfer and backup files. However, on one of the PC's, whenever I use Windows Explorer to "explore" the contents of a directory under My Network Places/Shared Docs On My Computer, Windows explorer crashes (and sends a diag report to Microsoft). I can view the contents of the directory quite happily via the native directory which is the target.

This doesn't happen for any other directory and it's OK on the other networked PC.

Anyone any ideas ?

Thanks.

A:Windows Explorer Crashes

If this folder contains incomplete downloads or file names containing foreign characters, SP1 seems to have solved the problem. Other updates may have addressed the problem if you don't have them all.

A help (if you have enough memory) is to go to Folder Options, View tab, and Launch Folder Windows in a Separate Process.
This will create another instance of explorer for folder processes so that if it crashes, it doesn't take the shell with it.

A:WTF is up with all these Windows Explorer crashes?

i've noticed this tendency too - just a right-click at the wrong time and instant crash.

it seems to recover soon enough and then it'll be alright for a few minutes, hours, or days - and then it'll crash again at a random right-click.

i'm a big context menu fan, so it can be aggravating when it happens.

i've wondered why it does it and first of all i thought it was because i tampered with my services, then it started happening on my as-yet-untampered-with laptop. then on pc number 3 i thought it was linked with turning windows media player off in the control panel because i was getting sick of the context menu entries. but it doesn't seem to be that either.

it's got me stumped and thanks for raising the issue.

anyone get this problem?

Recently Windows Explorer has been a major problem in my Windows Vista operating system It would often display error messages such as Windows Explorer is not responding and asks to close or restart at first I thought it wasn't that big of an issue Although recently EVERYTIME I boot up my computer the taskbar would completely freeze and everything on the taskbar would be unclickable The desktop still works fine though until I open up Windows Explorer it loads very slow and when I try to right click gt create new file the menu freezes as well The Explorer Crashes Windows only way I could correct the frozen taskbar would be to ctrl alt delete and stop start Explorer Even then it would still have a chance of freezing again on me I have tried many spyware adware virus scans norton spybot adaware avast nod and in safe mode I still can't create new files using right click I also turned off System Restore before this so that Windows Explorer Crashes isn't an option either I highly suspect that my Explorer is infected with a virus but I don't know how to fix it any suggestions would be very much appreciated Thanks in advance

Hi guys. Here's an odd one, because it happened on my old machine (which had an unstable O/S), but yesterday, I installed a factory fresh copy of XP on a brand new machine.

This morning, I went to search my drives for redundant movie files (to free up space) and every time I set the machine to search, a few seconds after windows explorer opens, it crashes. This is where I use the search command, then that opens windows explorer. I checked out the Microsoft website and I can find instances of crashes, but not associated with the search command.

Any ideas ? KP

Have you run a virus scan and malware scan? Do you have service pack 3 on it? Did windows explorer ever work or did this just start happening?

Hello -- I use an external hard drive to store pictures and videos. These are organized into various folders; when I try to open one particular folder, however, it causes Explorer to crash.

This folder is one of several other sub-folders that all work normally, i.e. the problem appears to be specifically related to this one. It was suggested that I change the "folder layout" settings to remove the navigation plane in the Exlporer window, which actually solved the problem for a few weeks; last night the folder again began crashing.

I've scanned the entire drive for viruses with current version of Kaspersky (no problems detected.) I've fiddled around with all of the options in the "properties" tab; in th past, one combination or another would make the folder/Explorer stable again for a while, but now it doesnt work.

Any advice / links about how to deal with this sort of thing? Thanks in advance

Hi, I've had a problem for a few days now
Windows explorer keeps crashing every 2-5 minutes
but all it does is close a few programs and make my taskbar disapear
and then everything goes back to normal,
There are no error messages except a crash report which i get with any non responsive program when i end it.
I have tried system resotre, antivirus, and diskcheck
is there anything else i can do other than format?

I had this same problem about a year ago. I had to replace explorer.exe with one from the install disc. That is is protected under Windows File Protection so I had to turn it off, back up my file, replace it, turn it back on, and then it worked. This link may be of help.

Hey

So I recently upgraded to Windows 8, and windows explorer keeps crashing. This did happen before the upgrade, but appears to have gotten more annoying now.

Some times I have noticed it happening: While watching a video and then returning to desktop, it has closed. While copying files (often!). And then every now and again inbetween.

Please let me know what other details you need, its really frustrating and help would be appreciated,

A:Windows Explorer crashes

One somewhat drastic option you have is to backup your personal data, installation files, & product keys to external storage, and reinstall Windows 8 using the "Custom" option, and let Windows 8 reformat the hard drive & reinstall onto a fresh partition. Opt to 'keep nothing' from the previous system. It sounds like a leftover from your troubled Windows 7 installation has migrated to your Windows 8 installation.
_______________

Otherwise, it's the usual troubleshooting steps.
1) Research your installed software's compatibility.
2) Run extensive malware scans. (a few from bootable media, if possible - such as Windows Defender Offline, AVG Rescue CD, Avira Rescue CD)
3) Check in Event Viewer for items listed just before & just after problem events.
4) Run diagnostics on your system hardware (especially hard drive & memory).
5) Make sure all available Windows Updates have installed successfully. (This does not include optional updates).
6) Check on your manufacturer's support website for any listed "known issues" with your PC. Especially watch for updates to the Bios, driver updates, and updates to any manufacturer-provided applets for power management, networking, etc.
7) Look the the Control Panel's Action Center for any listed issues.

Regarding software compatibility: if you have any third-party file utilities that concern compression, specialized file extension handling, etc -- temporarily uninstall these & see if the issues resolve. Research at the support website for your antivirus product, too -- as updates can often resolve incompatibilities that crop up.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Hello mcbain221,

Could you possibly try and copy the suspect folder to the desktop, or any location which is not on the external hard drive, and then check the newly created copy to see if it still has the same problem or not.

A:[Help] Recycle bin freezes, windows explorer crashes, delete windows dont close

Wecome Vinny,
I think that we may be able to solve your problem. Initially, a few reasons come to mind for your problem. Lets go step by step
Update and make a full anti virus scan
Download and make a full scan with Malwarebytes.
Run an SFC scan
System Files - SFC Command
Run 3 times if errors are found.
Finally, if nothing else is found, hit alt cntrl and delete at the same time on your keyboard, bring up task manager.
Go to process, click show process from all users. Then give us a screen shot.
Take a memory test

Hi all,

So when i got home this afternoon I turned my computer on as usual. However, when it reached the desktop, I got an error message saying that "Windows explorer has crashed blah blah" It couldn't find a solution, restarted and then crashed immediately ad infinitum. This means I can't get into my computer at all to get any logs or anything. I also tried running it in safe mode but my Keyboard doens't appaear to be "active" in the period you need to hit F8. Does anyone ahve any suggestions?

Cheers,
Matthew

Hi lizihao1130, Welcome to SF,

Well this can happen due to lot of reasons. The easy way to Find is to check the Event viewer. Goto Start under search type Event viewer > Windows Log > Application there check for errors nad please post them

A:Windows explorer crashes randomly , sometimes more then once

That is a common problem since XP, and I have yet to see it resolved. When explorer crashes, system icons tend to disappear and do not come back. The question is: Why is explorer crashing? It must be doing so frequently enough to cause you frustration with this problem, so we should try to determine why explorer is crashing and resolve that issue.

I'm running build 7000.

Sometimes, when I click START> All Programs > Accessories, many of the icons of built-in Windows programs like Paint, Calculator, etc. show up as white boxes.

When I try to click on Paint, for example, nothing happens. A few moments later, I would get a message saying - Windows Explorer Has Stopped Working.

I have installed Windows 7 on four different tablet PCs.

I've had this problem on two Dell Latitude XTs and a HP 2710p. My HP tx1000 has been operating perfectly for over a month now.

Has anyone else seen this issue?

Hello My computer is running Windows Ultimate x and in the past weeks I had some problems with Windows Explorer that frequently crashes First it was happening randomly while watching a movie or playing an RPG game In the last two weeks the problem started to occur only when I try to copy or move files into a folder Let s say that we have folder A and folder B Folder A has some mp files that I want to move in folder B I go in folder A select the items apple the copy or cut functions and then attempt to double frequently Explorer crashes Windows click on folder B to open it The folder is not opening and Windows Explorer crashes immediately After some seconds the process restarts but if I try to move the items again it crashes I tried restarting Windows but the problem was fixed only on the third restart of the system After that day I did not had problems with the crashes for around five days The problem is the same but it got fixed after the fifth restart or so It is indeed annoying and if you know something about it I will appreciate any attempts of help If you want more information just ask I tried to keep the post as short as possible Thanks

I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

Hello all,

Ever since installing XP Sp3 I've been getting error messages when I try to shut down. DEP crashes explorer.exe, and the crashing module is always unknown.

However, upon debugging the user.dmp files, the IMAGE_NAME is always msgina.dll and the faulting address is always the same.

I suspected a corrupt msgina.dll, and have since tried reinstalling sp3 and also replacing it with a copy from a working machine, but i still get the errors.

I am attaching the dump, perhaps one of you could pinpoint the issue.

Thank you.

------------------------------
I would also like to add:

I have already scanned the system for viruses/malware and have run HijackThis. Everything appears clean.

Hello,

I have a Toshiba running Windows XP Home Edition and whenever I turn it on and log it I get the "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" window. Shortly after closing that one i get the "dr watson post mortem debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close" window.

I cannot get to the internet but I am able to run most programs in the background if i dont close the windows explorer crash popup.

I have downloaded hijackthis, ibprocman, and startuplist from another computer and have transferred them to my toshiba.

This is my first time using those programs so any help would be great.

Thanks.

It's actually not my pc, it is my friends. He uses Internet Explorer 10 on his windows 7 ultimate 64bit SP1. Everytime he clicks on hyperlinks in webpages, his IE10 crashes and says "Internet Explorer has stopped working" and then it will reload the webbrowser and the last page, but it will freeze up on him and the only way he can close it is if he terminated via the task manager. How can he fix this? He also uses Norton 360 latest version but I can tell you already that isn't the issue.

A:Internet Explorer 10 crashes on Windows 7

Try No Add-ons mode,
Click the start button and type,
internet explorer
Click on the No Add-ons suggestion near the top/ Test.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/manage-add-ons#ie=ie-10-win-7
If still no joy,
Click Start and All programs,
Right click the ie10 listing and click on Run as administrator/ Test.
