Drives not working - HP Pavilon a520n

Q: Drives not working - HP Pavilon a520n

Help! I have an HP Pavilion a520n that was handed down to me from my brother-in-law. Being free I couldn't pass it up but there are a few issues I hope you can help me with.

The card-reader does not work, neither does the 3.5' floppy drive. I put the memory card from my digital camera in the reader but the drive is not recognized when I click on My Computer.

Drive "A" does show in My Computer but when putting in a disk and clicking on the icon the drive light does not turn on and the window pops up stating to insert a disk in drive A:

I am running Window's XP Pro 2002 with Service Pack 2. I downloaded the driver off HP's website but trying to install it I get the message that the card reader is not installed.

Please help!

Sincerely,
Mark

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yo guys. Have an HP Pavillion a520n with the A7N8X-LA (ASUS) motherboard that is dead. Went through the HP website troubleshooter http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...788&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=404643&lang=en, and confirmed this. I want to replace this board with the same but not having much luck finding one, not even on HP's site. Any idea's? Is there a similar board I can install that will fit? Thanks in advance.

Well I had this computer for about 2 years or so bought it brand new and always held up pretty good.

Well today I go to start it back up and nothing...Check and there is just a Green Flashing light in the back..It flashes maybe twice a second and then the from power button also flashes blue in the same pattern.

So what does this mean and how do I fix it...It doesn't power up at all no fan or anything.

What is the best way to get this driver reinstalled on this particular machine? It is running XP. Of course all software needed is on a CD to fix and load.

Flash drive, internet connection are available.

Thanks!

Ok ,so i'm trying to fix a friends computer (Hp pavilion a520n). He got a...well at least one virus, and was having major trouble so we called it a complete reboot. things were going fine, then the visuals started going out, meaning, on reboot the screen would shrink to something like....well worse than 256 color...anyway....i tried to update the bios somewhere along the line...next thing i know, the computer sounds like it is fine, but no input or outpus is taking place, meaning, i can't see anything at all on the monitor, and i think the keyboard and mouse are both locked up....but yeah, good ol' socket A motherboard, onboard video, so i think it is the mobo....but i have no idea what to do, and i think it might be dead...but it would be kind of sudden, so yeah......Help...*pls?

I have it plugged in but it won't power on?
On the back of tower is a small flickering green light
What's happening?

A:Hp pavillion desktop a520n won't power up

If that light is flickering, it is likely that the power supply has burned out, and must be replaced.

Hi @guru99! I'm sorry to say that, but this error may indicate that your HDD is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still in warranty you can contact the support, but in case you're out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the hard drive yourself I would be able to recommend you some replacement. Hope this helps and best of luck!

Baselo Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! What will work is restoring your machine to its original factory condition using HP Recovery Media. This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks.  You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update".  If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!---------------------------------------However, HP Customer Support is generally not available on the weekends, so you might have to wait until Monday to contact them.---------------------------------------If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you can check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/  and http://www.restoredisks.com/Good Luck

i have a Pavilion and when watching videos or listening to music the volume will go away or turn way down but the actual volume settings do not change just the volume its self.  I have tried reinstalling the drivers and ran all the test.  I have also shut off my mic and told it to do nothing in the auto volume settings yet it still randomly decides to turn its self down.  I have spend hours with tech support doing the same things over and over and even rebooted my entire system.  I have only had this HP for a month.  never had a problem in 7 years with my old hp and this one is about to go in the trash.

Hi there, I am having problems trying to make a clean install of Windows 7 on my HP DV6000. I have rpeviously formatted and installed operating systems on many computers, but this one is giving me to fight!

The main problem is that the instalation never continues from the "Windows is loading files" at the start of the CD booting!

Does HP or this pavilon have any issues?

help will be appreciated!

A:HP Pavilon DV6000 & Win7

Make your HP REcovery Disks or a backup image so you have a path back to factory condition. You can also extract apps from the HP REcovery disks using this method: http://www.sevenforums.com/installat...tml#post488270

Next make sure you have the latest BIOS version update from HP Support Downloads webpage for your model, which is safest installed from Windows.

CHeck also in the BIOS for SATA controller setting: try AHCI first, then IDE if necessary.

Now wipe the HD to get the cleanest possible slate: SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Clean Install Windows 7

If install fails again, remove all but 2gb of RAM and test your ram with memtest for 5-6 passes. http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Then test your HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Where did you get Win7? DId you burn it yourself?

It looks as though it's in some sort of safe mode or something. I don't know what this password is. A:Upgrade Graphic Card on hp pavilon 15-ab291sa

robcioslaw Sorry to say this, but you're operating under a misunderstanding, as laptops to do not have customer-replaceable graphics "cards". Instead, they have a graphics processor (GPU) that is soldered to the system board which also contain the CPU chip. While these are sometimes replaceable, that involves sending the PC to an HP Service Center and paying a LOT of money to have it disassembled, have the system board replaced, and have it reassembled -- typically considerably more money than simply buying a more powerful laptop. So basically, it is not practical to upgrade the graphics on a laptop. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

While waiting for a reply:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests (located at this link: Hardware Diagnostics ). They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

The BSOD is a STOP 0x124.
This is most likely a hardware error - which includes:
- overclocking
- compatibility issues
- low-level driver problems
- malware

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on Win7 systems due to the sptd.sys driver.
Please uninstall the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): DuplexSecure - FAQ

I believe that you have Comodo installed on your system. Try uninstalling it to see if that helps.

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Win7 systems.

Quote:

Please uninstall all ATI stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program
Then, download and install a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD
Then use the ATI uninstall manager to uninstall the Catalyst Control Center (CCC).

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem in perfmon /report, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Uninstall". Reboot for changes to take affect.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

I kept getting a blue screen with an error code 0xc0000185. I ordered the recovery Disks from HP but when I went to recover the machine, it sort of reads the cd and then I get the HP logo and the circle just spins and spins. A:CD Drives not working????

Have you got the drives configured properly. If they are sharing the same IDE ribbon cable then the small jumpers on the back of each drive should be set to either:

both on CL (cable select) so the bios assigns them automatically. Or One set as MA (Master) and the other as SL (slave).

The pin positions for each of these settings are usually engraved into the metal on the top rear of the drive.

Hi. Someone on another forum I am on says that a disk needs to be run every now and then to keep from locking up, and that the odds that a hdd will fail are higher if it sits unused for a long time.

I am not trying to call anyone out here - it's just that I have never heard of this. Is this true?

A:Neither of my drives are working they are both CD/RW

Check the cables, but mainly you will want to check the jumpers. The jumpers are little plastic clips on the back of the drives that signal if they are "Master" "Slave", or "Cable Select". I would recommend making one a master and one a slave, that way cable select does not get it confused as i have seen happen. The first step you need to look at is getting them to recognize in the bios. There should be a map near the pins where the jumpers are for the selection. MA being Master, SL being slave, and CS being cable select. Move the jumpers accordingly.

The power supply can hold them (Since it's all stock and the computer has worked fine for 4+ years) They just stopped all of the sudden.

Now my CD drive died around 2-3 years ago, so I always used my DVD drive for everything, but now that my DVD drive is having the same problem I can't do anything, I might as well get them both fixed.

Any ideas?

Is the dead CD drive your former CD-RW, listed as "both drives" above? Are you just running a DVD in your system now? If so, CD/DVD drives don't last forever, and it is highly possible that the DVD drive is worn out now. You can't fix CD/DVD drives. They have to be replaced with new drives. You can install a single combo burner to read and burn CD's and DVD's now. A combo burner is about $45

Help required !

I had a cd/dvd drive installed which up until a few weeks ago worked fine...now it does not even appear on my hardware list. so no exclamation mark no d or e drive. looked at some help articles which suggest checking jumper switches on the back of the drive...cant find any !

What next?

A:CD/DVD Drives not working

What did you do to start this? Devices don't just stop showing up unless you: download a virus (p2p or from other sources), mess around inside and knock loose a cable, or the device dies. Check to make sure that the ribbon cable (flat grey cable) is plugged securely into the motherboard and into the cd-drive.

Check and make sure the drive is getting power (you should be able to open and close it wether or not the computer detects it).

There should be a jumper somewhere on the back of the cd-drive if there is not, then don't worry about it.

Were you messing with the cables before this messed up?

The power is fine. I can't boot into Linux (as I don't have a CD drive and I'm on my backup HDD as it is) but it's not listed in my BIOS either.

I've tried different cables to and from the mainboard to the drives. No luck.

Is this most likely my drives are knackered (seems unlikely both would mess up) or is there something wrong with the mainboard socket?

Any help is appreciated.

I am using Windows 7 on a ASUS K50Ij laptop. The DVD suddenly quit working. I can hear it make noise, but that is it.

I used System Restore - restored back to the oldest date possible. Still nothing.

In Safe Mode there is no option to use D drive, therefor I am unable to use the recovery DVD.

D drive never shows up as an option to save something to either.

The DVD shows in the list of computer hardware and it states that it is working and the drivers are up to date.

I am desperately looking for some advice here and I have scrolled Working Drives - Rom Not CD through your forums looking for answers but I don t see anything that helps me Several months back I started having issues with my CD Rom Drive CD Rom Drives - Not Working It would not acknowledge any disc you put in it You can open and put in a disc and the light would be on for a couple of seconds but then it would go off and if you look at the drive under my computer it says CD Rom Drives - Not Working there is nothing in the drive Well after trying everything I could think of I had my brother come and help with it He even installed a completely new drive we thought my drive was bad and just needed to be replaced and after quite a bit of time he was able to make both drives work They worked fine for a few months I thought they were fixed I was wrong About weeks ago I started having some Antivirus errors I have been using the free AVG Antivirus program so I had to un-install and re-install it It was right about the same time that BOTH my CD Rom Drives decided not to work again They both are acting the same way You can put a disc in either one of them and the light will come on for a few seconds and then it goes off And as before the computer does not recognize that a disc is in either drive And BTW the device manager shows that both drives are working properly so that is what makes this even more frustrating Before you ask me to un-install and re-install the drivers please note that I am not the most technical savvy in that area and have no clue what driver to use so I have not tried that yet for fear of not finding one that would work The two drives I have are LITEON-LTR- E LG-CD-RW CED B I use a year old Dell system with Windows XP on it One thing that is really odd about this is that if I go into the Device manager and play with the properties setting checking and unchecking the Digital CD Playback box I can get the LITE ON drive to work briefly and temporarily But when I go to switch the disc it again goes back to not seeing any disc again I have tried to research and troubleshoot the problem but a lot of the answers I see are too advanced for me to understand and thus they don t really help me I have considered that the AVG Anti-virus program is conflicting with something because the CD rom problems appear to have started around the same time I started using AVG Could that be the problem Should I try a different anti-virus program Does anyone have any other suggestions in laymans terms please Any help or advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated Thank you nbsp

Hi callmevictoria, try uninstall and reinstall the two physical optical drives.

First, shutdown and unplug the drives then power up unit. Go to Device Manager under Administrative Tools to make sure the two drives are not there. If they are there delete them.

Next, shutdown and plug the drives back and power up. I hope you will see them back working again.

Hope this helps.

My cd and dvd drives are not working. I ran a diagnostics and passed the self, seek and read tests. I uninstalled and reinstalled the the Intell Bus Master IDE Controller. I also checked the Bios settings, restored defaults and cleared the NVRAM. The drives open but the shortcuts don't work, they aren't in my computer or in any program I open like RealOnePlayer. In the device manager I get a code 19: the registry is damaged. I don't know anything about the registry, or computers for that matter. In previous posts there is something about opening the registry editor but I'm unsure how to do that or if that will cause more harm than good. Any help is greatly appreciated

The first thing I do with similar issues is shut the computer down and unplug the power cord from it and any drives. Then after about 30 seconds I start up and try again. I get it most frequently with messages about it would work better with USB 2.0 ports. And Yes, you could be having a problem with the power circuits between the power supply and the motherboard, hard to find and fix without replacing parts. Static electricity can also cause such a problem with the screen blanking out, see it on my workbench once in awhile.

Hi all,

Overnight my CD-ROM and DVD-Rom drives have decided not to work, or more specifically the system is not reading them. Theres the yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager for each.
Now ive done all that the help facility has said. Ive tried updating driver(which it will do), uninstalling it then re-installing it, physically removing the devices from the computer but all to no avail! EAch time the computer then restarts its the same problem.
I think the error code is saying something like:
'31: This device requires another device to be working properly etc'

Any advice please??

Yes. Copy this text into note pad and save it as a .reg file. Double click on the file and restart the system. I am assuming you have scanned for virus and spyware. Start the copy / paste after this.

A:DVD drives not working/registering

Coincidence.
How old were the optical drives.
Optical drives last about a year, nowadays... DVD drives have even a shorter life.
It is possible to build an optical drive with a long life, but only Plextor and Yamaha are doing it, as far as I know. Lasers burn out just like a light bulb.
If your drives were used a lot, they could fail after 6 months, which is good because nearly all of them have a one-year warranty.
You might want to pull off the cover from the bottom of the drive, and look for a slipped roller drive, or a belt on a belt drive that has slipped off. Just slip them back on and your drive will return to normal. For a while.

It gives me the option to press F1 to continue. When i do, windows boots like normal but the only problem is that the cd drive and dvd drive dont work. When i go to device manager it says the devices are working fine and the drivers are up to date but when i put a cd or dvd in it says "E:\ is not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable." E:\ is my cd/dvd drive.

Can anyone help me?

Reformat and reinstall windows, sounds like you got the wrong driver or something. thats prolly the simplest way to fix it.

I noticed that since I inadvertantly put a Win 95 game cd in the cd drive, neither my DVD or CD drives work. If I look in device driver, I get the following messages for both my DVD and CD drives:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

I tried uninstalling the drives and reinstalling them, but get the same message. Could the old game have wrecked havoc with my system and killed the drives? Any suggestions as to what I should try next?

Never used headphones myself on this system (ME 1Gb Athlon) but my son used them okay last November when staying here. Not now though - neither drive h/phones socket will operate - sound remains from speaker system.
Have tried three different sets of headphones, all of which okay on other devices.
Have removed both drives via Device Manager and re-started to re-identify them - still no change.
Using Creative PlayStation with 5.1 surroundsound speakers.
Have checked all the property and option sheets I can think of but can find nothing relating to phones.
I thought phone sockets were internally wired within CD and DVD drives so I find it strange that both devices have same problem.

Anyone got any ideas where to look next?

[Hi to all who may remember me - sorry to not have been on-line much of late but health and other issues are bogging me down at the moment.]

Have you tried plugging the headphones into the sound card jack, rather than the front panel jack. Probably the only sound you will get out of the cd headphone plugs is cd audio, don't think other sounds will play out of that jack

When I plug in my flash drive into my computer's usb port, no new drive pops up in My Computer. All other kinds of usb devices work (mouse, etc) but each one of my 5 flash drives doesn't. I have to go to admin tools in control panel, click computer management, disk management, then assign it a drive letter, but it still doesn't show up in my computer, though I can acsess it. The weird thing is After I remove the flash drive, I can't use that letter again and now I see 6-7 drives in browse boxes, say in Microsoft word when I'm opening a document. How can I make the usb flash drives work and fix the drive letter problem..?

Thanks.

A:CD/DVD Drives and USB ports not working

I have had USB ports go stupid on me. For me, what woke them up was to power down the machine, unplug the power cord, disconnect all USB cables from the machine that go to devices that have their own power, like printers, and then plug the power cord back in and power back up. After it's booted up, I plugged the USB cables back in and the USB ports were working fine. This happened with Vista, Windows 7 and linux - a hardware problem.

I just put together a system and installed Vista. After a few days of using it, the DVD writer stopped working. Also, Daemon Tools does not work. In "My Computer", no optical drives even show up. In Device Manager, both the physical DVD writer and the virtual dvd drive show up under DVD/CD-ROM drives, but both have an exclamation mark next to them. Under the device manager properties for both drives, it says:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. Code 39.

I click the driver tab, "Driver Details", and it only shows C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\cdrom.sys. I tried replacing the file from someone else's Vista machine, but it still doesn't work.

What could be wrong? Thanks for reading and replying.

I have asked this before and looked through the site but to date can find no solution.

2 of my usb flash drives are not recognised while 2 are, and I have just been given a new one.

When I plugged it in the computer said it was loading drivers and then that it was ready for use.

It shows up in device manager but I cannot access it from 'my computer'.

The same applies to 2 of my 4 drives.

Surely this is a bad bug in Win 7, is there any solution yet for this?

In the past I have unplugged all USB devices (don't forget to get permission using Safely remove Hardware and eject meda) and then go to Device Manager to uninstall all the USB. 1. I can't open the DVD Drive.
2. There's no light flash.
3. The computer didn't detect the DVD.
4. Can't play the CD/DVD. It seems it has stop functioning or maybe blocked by the system.

I really don't know what to do. I'm really panic. I bet, maybe there's something has to do with the Roxio or maybe no, might be else.

I really need your help to solve these problems. Thanks in advanced.

I recently updated the software for my UPS Worldship program using the CD that they sent me and everything was fine.
My son burned a couple of CD's earlier that same day and both drives worked. The next day I tried to use the CD and I discovered that neither one is working.

When I go to "My Computer", it only shows the A: and C: drives.
I restarted the computer and did a search for new hardware but it still does not recognize them. I checked the ribbon and power cables and all is OK.
Both will open & close and light up when a CD is in them.

Any Ideas how to fix this problem?

It is a HP Pavilion 751 n (only about 6 months old) running windows XP.

Thanks,
C.J.

New to these forums can someone please help
In desperate help as have not got clue what is causing these 2 Rw drives not to work ? (1 internal/1 external) under Vista home basic..

I think it all started when I tryed to install vista again. The internal drive failed to read/write and I read you have to change UpperFilters & LowerFilters in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} both these filters do not exist.
I thought maybe the drive might be corrupt, so bought external usb Rw drive(plug&play) but this also fails to load any disks. Can't re-install Vista or anything for that matter..

Any help would be great please.. I have no hair left

I m not sure what to do so I thought I d ask around this looks like a good forum Thursday I started up my comp normally MSN messenger loads automatically because I m too lazy to set it otherwise I go to close it and my cursor freezes over the window It doesn t start moving again so I tried to restart but nothing please!!! working, No signal monitor, drives not to help happened I tried holding in the power button and still nothing So I flipped my surge protector off and then on again and turned the comp back on When I turned it on the power light came on and the fan in the back came on but it sounds like nothing else did and there is no signal going to the monitor The CD drives won t eject and it doesn t sound like the harddrive is spinning I called up Emachines tech support and he told me to try holding the button down again and restarting No signal to monitor, drives not working, help please!!! that way and going into safe mode Well this time it restarted and I was able to boot in safe mode The tech guy said it was probably a virus or spyware and I could just restore but I m not sure I buy this because I just scanned with my virus scan and Adaware two days earlier and I haven t downloaded anything or been to any malicious websites in weeks unless Yahoo mail counts as malicious So anyways I go to the start No signal to monitor, drives not working, help please!!! menu to go to the system tools and it freezes again I restarted again in safe mode and it froze before it even finished starting up I gave No signal to monitor, drives not working, help please!!! up and called it a night and talked to some friends at work When I came back a few hours ago I started it up and it did nothing except start the fan and the power light again It seems like nothing at all is coming on I don t hear the harddrive spinning CD drives won t eject etc What is wrong here What do I do I was browsing online for things about hd s not spinning and read somewhere that some cheaper drives stick when they get old My drive is a little over years old and I guess you could say I m a heavy computer user so it s got some mileage on it The suggestion was to hit it to get it spinning again long enough to retrieve the data from it Is this safe I ve been thinking about getting an external hd because I m really bad about backing up my data Would it be possible to get an external connect my comp to another comp get the hd spinning again and save the data onto the external and then replace the hd and or anything else that might be messing up I really don t know a lot about hardware issues so I m pretty lost here and I m just looking for some answers If anyone has any idea what I need to do please let me know It might be a day or so before I can get back to this board I m using the computers at the library and their hours aren t very accomdating on weekends But if anyone can help that would be great Thanks in advance nbsp

I know there are some similar topics, however i haven't found one that matched my situation.

Problem:
- Hard drives are working, but are not showing in My Computer

Some Info:
- Brand new hard drives
- Updated BIOS to newest one successfully
- BIOS recognizes the drives
- I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drives
- I rebooted a couple of times

If I make a short cut of my DVD or CDRW drive from the 'My Computer' folder to my desktop, I have to have a cd or dvd disk in the drive in order to use the short cut. How do I make a short cut that will let me eject and load, (mouse clicks), as well as play from the short cut as if I was using it in 'My Computer' desktop folder? I have win xp. Thanks for any assistance. Greg.
