Preferred Solution: Admin account lost admin privileges!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Ive stumbled across a problem that has been causing me grief for a few days now, every time I try to access my hard drive (C disk) it says, access is denied. Also, i cant edit permissions because I've lost admin rights. Ive tried many things including unlocking the system admin, this lets me access a few extra things like being able to use the sfc command in cmd, however, it doesn't allow me to access the C disk or change permission because it also has lost admin rights? I fear that this is a bad problem and I don't know how it happened. I have tried restoring to a previous date and that doesn't work either.

Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Shimin4tor

Nice work Microsoft! I just turned on my computer to find that my admin rights have been stripped from my user account. It's weird, I'm the only user of this computer and its a personal laptop.- Running Windows Vista on a 32bit HP DV5 Laptop- I can't access Task Manager from Ctrl+Alt+Del- Cannot enter Run -> Regedit as it returns a "Regediting has been disabled by your Administrator"Also there's this weird message below my Run command box:Any help?PS: UAC was turned off ages ago and similar problems went away. It's still turned off - no idea what's going on

Hi all So the situation is this I had to setup an existing PC in Admin Privileges Lost the office for a new starter and decided to be lazy and simply change the user account name Lost Admin Privileges I know that was a schoolboy error Since doing this the computer allows me to login fine with the new username password but keeps asking for the Admin login details whenever I try to make system changes update software etc The user account I changed was the admin account so not sure why this is happening I ve tried using every username password that has ever been assigned to that PC but nothing works Is there any workaround to get Admin privileges back so I can fix this FYI - The PC is a member of our work domain so figure this has further complicated things Really hoping this isn t going to need a full re-installation of windows fingers crossed someone out there can give me some good news Thanks in advance nbsp

A:Lost Admin Privileges

The prompt for Admin during installs is actually a good thing (that is the UAC and you REALLY want it to prompt) BUT you can almost always use any log in the Administrators Group

use CP->User Accounts
add user
set type = Admin
*must* add password to it

save and close

runas /user:$whatever$you$just$created cmd
give that password

it will then create the %profile% for that new user

From then on, you can reply with $whatever$you$just$created and its password

I seem to have lost admin rights/privileges on my account, even though it says i am an admin. I can't use windows update because of the following message. UAC is off.

I created another account and swapped admin privileges to that, and everything was ok, but as soon as i swap the privileges back to my original account, i get various 'this action requires admin rights' etc etc

I'm confused. I don't want to keep logging into another admin account just so i can use windows update.

I've tried this, but it said it couldn't fix all the problems. What can i try next folks?

A:Lost Admin Privileges

Just set up a new account. Give yourself privileges for the software in the first account. Make that the new account. The first account is corrupt

You can try this, too.

Hi all,

I have a loptop with windows xp, but my user is having limited privileges.
Is it possible to give admin privileges to a particular command or a set of commands (say for example i wanted to set the IP address of the machine from the limited user) from the admin login.

thanks in advance,

A:admin privileges for limited account

Im sure if u assign the laptop an IP address another account would use that.
Unsure and not willing to test it, but you could try!
Aslong as you know the admin stuff...we cant help with passwords :)

i dont think you can change the admin/limited rights..if they need to install programs..i would set as admin, what damage could they do :P lol

I have an admin acct that doesn't seem to have privileges. One issue is that I'm unable to create a user acct (specified acct name not valid, cannot contain the following characters: |[]”:;|<>+=,?*)
The new user name contains no such characters.

So I enabled the hidden admin acct, which seems to have privileges, but gets the same error when trying to create a new acct.

various virus, malware and rootkit detection utilities don't find anything. Outside of the admin issues and account creation, the system runs fine.

This system is a Dell XPS 410, upgraded to win 7 Pro x64 SP1 from XP (before I obtained it).

Any ideas appreciated.

A:Admin has no privileges, cannot create user account

I'm checking into profile issues...System Properties\Advanced|User Profile settings shows the users in the below image.

All seems well except for the Account Unknown. I guess #1 is the hidden admin account, #'s 2 & 3 are the named user accts.

There was an account named updatususer. Research shows that this is an nvidea update service account. I removed it from the admin account (still can't create a new user).

in a cmd window, 'net user' returns only users #2 & #3. User #3 is the local admin account without privileges.

Any ideas as to what the Account Unknown user could be (if it's even pertinent to the issue)? I thought it might be the guest account, but it's not turned on.

Frustrated with admin rights - Please help me.

Just purchased new PC - HP Pavilion desktop and upgraded to Windows 10 during installation. I've downloaded Google Chrome as my default search engine with no issues. I've attempted several times to download Google Earth. Download fails: "Google Earth needs administrator privileges to install."

I am the only user on this PC and User Account type indicates that I'm the "Administrator".

Why won't Google Earth install?

A:Google Earth won't install - admin privileges required (I am admin)

Hello and welcome!

Sometimes you have to run the installation file and deliberately make it "Run as Administrator" by right clicking on the downloaded file and selecting this option. Not sure if this is the case with Google Earth but worth a try.

Any clue before I start format again ?

Also in safe mode I tried uninstall HM2... win8 says: "contact admin"

I disable the postgress service, but even this is not working...

A:I lost my admin privileges in Bad Postgres Installation

Try adding "Take Ownership" to the Shell:

Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8

See if you can elevate your Privileges with that. It may be the permissions for the whole folder where you have these files stored.

I'm going to let a technician have my Windows 7 64bit PC in order to do clone the HDD to a SSD and then replace the HDD with the SSD. I think the techn wants an admin level account. I am concerned that (s)he not gain access to confidential files etc that would be available to me were I logged in. Is there a way to let the tech have admin access (s)he wants w/o having to be concerned about the privacy of the info on it? Can you create an admin level account which deprives its user from gaining access to files on a certain directory under c:\users

A:granting another user access to an account with 'admin' privileges

Acerman why don't you clone the drive yourself it is really not that hard with Macrium Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download

See my pic it shows the process but remember the drive you clone to has to be as large or larger than the drive you are cloning from.

There is a way of dragging and dropping the partitions into a smaller drive but it is not reliable enough for me.

The alternative is to image your drive slip a new one in - install the system using this
Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 and then use the image to get back your data. As you seem to be concerned that you have data that you do not want to be copied or whatever. That is so easy if you know how and I can and I am not a techie so the shop bloke would be more than capable of doing that.

Hi all

I hope somebody can perhaps rescue me,

I have had win8 for approx 1 year and just upgraded to win8.1 last week.

I installed bitdefender total security at the same time and everything was fine for a few days until one morning I woke up my Laptop to find I couldnt open a software program. Further investigation has found that I can not alter anything on my machine.

I have only the one user account which has my name, email, Administrator and password protected showing.

I can use my laptop still but have no admin rights at all.

When i try to open command prompt (admin) it takes a few minutes to come back with an error saying cannot access specified path, file folder etc...

I am pulling my hair out as i cant even restore my system back to factory settings.

How can I restore my factory settings from this point??

Hi Everyone,

Furthermore if I attempt to log onto the client computer as the local Administrator by specifying the computer name rather than the Domain name at logon I see the following -

Finally if I then follow, these
instructions to enable the hidden administrator account I am met with the following message -

I have considered an offline password reset disk, however the local ('hidden') Administrator account is disabled! This feels like a catch 22, can anybody offer any suggestions on how to restore true Administrative access?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The main (and only account) I have been using since the first beta came out had administrator privileges.

Today when I booted up I noticed that my account could no longer do things that are associated with an admin account, such as installing certain programs and writing to certain folders.

I created another account with admin rights and that account has the exact same problem. I tried removing the admin status on my account and putting it back on but that did not work.

Anyone else have this problem or have any advice on how to get my account seen as an admin account?

There should be an admin account with full rights that was created when Windows was installed but it is usually only available when booting into safe mode. I had a user account 'Administrator' only at first, and then I decided to create another account for some reason. now when I log into windows I can only see the new account and can not access anything from the 'Administrator' account. the only way I can get into the Administrator account is to boot into safe mode. is there anything I can do to reverse what I did? (both accounts have administrative privileges)

A:Lost Admin Account

That's Windows default behavior if there are other accounts other than Administrator. You can log on as Administrator by pressing Control + Alt + Delete twice in rapid succession at the Welcome Screen. This will bring up the old style logon box where you can type in your desired user name, in this case Administrator. To add the Administrator account to the Welcome screen, download Microsoft's TweakUI utility and repeat the steps show in this animation:

Ok, so I used to have only one account on my computer which I tried to make hidden by changing the registry value to 0. That was months and months ago. Yesterday I made my grandpa an account so he can use it when my sister is on his mac. Well, now my account wont show up so I'm unable to log in to it and I have the only admin account and never enabled the default admin one. So how can I regain access to my account? I've tried ctrl alt del like in xp but got nothing. I've tried booting into safemode and got nowhere. its like the account only exsists as a placeholder. I dont see anything in the user accounts section of the control panel but its still in c:/users/chris. So please help me as i have important documents on there!

I?m working on a PC running XP pro that had an Admin account on it. I wanted to add another user and was not able to. The PC was on a net work now it?s off the network and in a workgroup. When I was not able to add a user I switched the work group to a different workgroup. Added my new user, in doing that I got an error saying something about enable sharing files. I enabled or disabled can?t remember. At that point I was able to add my user. After I rebooted I no longer had the admin account and the desktop came up with a new screen saver. I did not delete anything. I need some advise to get the admin account back. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to the fourm

Basically what you are asking is agaisnt this forum rules. Passwords are put in place to protect the information some one has placed on them.

The problem is "we" don't know who you are or even if it is your PC.

Let say that someone took/has access to "your" PC and you personal/buisness things that you don't want others to access. Would want a stranger help with a password?

Today I was doing some changes (changed Network name & re-asstablished Auto Logon) & restarted the comfuser. Well, screen came up asking for my password to my Standard Account (I always use Standard) & I got in no problem. But when I tried checking a few things, UAC came up asking for the Admin. Password w/o a box to type in; I closed everything & rebooted, but only Standard Account came up on the screen.

Once in comfuser, I checked Control Panel\User Accounts & Family Safety\User Accounts but only my Standard Account is there! I've checked the C:\Users folder & both my Admin. & Standard account folders show; so where is my Admin. Account log-in? This is the 1st time this has ever happened to me after setting-up Auto Logon.

Trying to understand what you mean here.

-You enabled autologon for a standard user account
-UAC is now prompting for authentication but does not allow you to enter the admin credentials?

- Auto logon is not functioning properly if you were prompted for your standard account password to log into windows

Your administrator account is still available, it sounds like may have been hidden by enabling auto logon.

I would try reverting the changes you made to enable autologon.
If that does not make your administrator account reappear:

Since UAC is not functioning properly, created an elevated shortcut to the local security policy.

To create an elevated shortcut:
-Right Click on your desktop, select "create new shortcut"
-In the shortcut path, copy and paste the following:

runas /user:youradminhere /savecred "%windir%\System32\Secpol.msc"
Replace "youradminhere" with your administrator account name
-Run the shortcut, when it prompts you for the administrator password, enter it (Note: You will not see anything in the command prompt when typing your password in, it will appear as if it is not recognizing your key strokes. This is normal.)
Once you have the local security policy open:

-Select Local Policies
-Select Security Options

Find the following entry:

-Interactive Logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL. Set this to disabled.

This should prompt you for both a username and password on your next logon and allow you to log in to your admin account.

Although there may be techniques to recover a lost password it is forum policy that we do not discuss these here - your best bet would be to visit a local security specialist and get them to recover/reset it for you - and a change to the policy for the replacement admin may be a good idea, I always wrote a list of all passwords and stored it with the Managing Director and also in a fireproof safe

Also when i go to control panel>accounts i cannot not even have the right to change the standard user back to the admin domain as it asks me for the machine account password. What the hell is that?

Hi danbee80, welcome to the Vista Forums

It depends on what exactly has happened with the accounts but,
Vista is designed so that if there is not an admin account present it reverts to the XP method of working. If you boot into safe mode you should be be able to log in as the Hidden admin account, (Default is Blank password), and thus able to create a new admin account that you can use to recover files etc.

If you have an admin account on the machine that you cannot gain access to you may want to have a look here ...

Hello and welcome to TenForums!

If you can, use system restore to revert back to a previous point when things were working. and then you can try again to avoid entering the password by using the following tutorial. Due to the fact that you seem to have lost Admin rights you may find this difficult to do unless you can boot from a recovery disk and access the advanced startup options.

If you really did want to remove a password from your account you can do this (but I suggest you are more secure with a password):

Using Win 8.1

First off, the account I'am signed on with is listed as admin type account. It's the one I had to enter my windows account email.
Since installing the new MalwareBytes 2.0 program (which went in without any problem) it put an shortcut icon on desktop. I tried too move the icon from desktop to another folder and it said I needed admin rights to do this. Usually once I click on continue it gives me access and proceeds to carry out the command.
So I followed the tutorial to build hidden admin account. I type in: net user administrator /active:yes, it completed. I signed on to the admin account and tried the same operation and it still asked for admin rights.
What am I doing wrong?

UpDate: MalwareBytes 2.0 has a self protection ability that needs to not be enabled, otherwise everything associated with the Program including program icons located anywhere cannot be moved.

Pretty basic question (I think). Is the built-in administrator's account exactly the same as a manually created local administrator's account privilege wise? Or does the built-in possess inherently elevated privileges?

I have googled around, however, I can't find a clear answer for this.

Thank you

A:built-in admin account vs regular admin account

They are basically the same, except that the built-in possess inherently elevated privileges, and the other doesn't until approved through UAC to elevate the action.

Hello ndean, and welcome to Eight Forums.

It's the same in Windows 8.

So here is an interesting problem I ran into after working on the family computer (I was away at college and just got back for break).

After removing all the viruses, I was left with a computer where both the main user account and the Admin account did not have Admin rights. I can log into the Administrator account, but I cannot do even the most simplest of things, such as open Control Panel. So, I am at a loss to fix this. So simply enough, how does one restore administrative rights to the admin account when it has lost them.

Windows XP Home SP2
Control Panel, and many related functions, along side with such things as leftclick->properties on My Computer do not work (It says privilege removed, contact admin).
Even the Help will not open.

A:Admin rights for Admin account?

Please download Trend Micro's HJTInstall.exe to your Windows Desktop.

Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe . The application will install by default to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
Click on the Install button. A shortcut icon will be created on your Windows Desktop.
When the installation finishes, the HijackThis application will launch.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. When the scan is complete, a log file should open in notepad.
On the notepad document, click Edit>Select All>Edit>Copy and then paste the contents of the log file into your next reply to this thread.

>>Please-Do Not use the Analyze This button-the results can be dangerous if misinterpreted.
>>Please-Do Not have HijackThis 'fix' anything yet. Most of what if finds will be harmless or even required.

I purchased a new Alienware computer 2 weeks ago and a couple days ago I noticed I couldn't access my Pictures folder. I also noticed I couldn't do any Admin tasks. I can't open task manager, Open any exe. files and when I right click on C drive I get Access is denied. I don't believe I've made any changes so not sure what went wrong. I could make changes and install programs prior.
Any help would be appreciative.
Thanks Dave

Although I bought this computer new w/ XP installed and set up the original user accounts and have been able to add/remove accounts, I have had reason to wonder if I am recoginzed and the adminstrator.

I don't tend to interface with the computer at the OS level very often. I am trying to install some software that tells me that I need admin privileges and I'm having trouble installing the software, making me wonder if this might be the problem

Where do I even look for that kind of thing?

Here are the steps to modify ownership and permissions of folders and files:
  1.       Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
  2.       Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
  3.       Click Edit, and then do one of the following:
 ·         To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click Other users and groups and, inEnter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group, and then click OK.
  ·         To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change owner to box, click the new owner.
  4.       If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on sub containers and objects check box.
  5.       Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
  6.       Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.
  Additional considerations
   ·         An administrator can take ownership of any file on the computer.
   ·         Assigning ownership of a file or a folder might require you to elevate your permissions using User Access Control.

I need to install a software but when I click the file the UAC comes out and asks the usual questions. What I find weird is it does not give me the option to click YES. Only the NO button shows up. I checked and it seems that I am logged in as a local account. I tired everything but can't figure out to change the account type or log-in as admin. Only resort is to back up and do a restore PC but even the backup won;t let me go past the UAC.
Any help will be much appreciate.d

You cannot log in as an real admin. If UAC is not letting you past, there there is something wrong with the software or third party security software you may have installed. Where did you get this software and what is the name of it?

I got a free computer via a local "Help" disability program (yeah me!) However, things are very different on this system (Win 7) than my old one (I have background from DOS 3.1 - Win XP). I don't know if I'm looking at Win 7 issues or something the computer providers set up (will call when I see replies to this post).

Although I am, as best I can tell, the Admin., several folders are not accessible to me (such as C:\Documents and Settings or C:\Users\All Users).

Do you folks believe that there is an Admin. setting that I fail to see or is it possible that my computer providers made some sort of master Admin. control setting?

A:Admin. Privileges?

Welcome to the forum.

In Windows 7, Documents and Settings as well as several others in that folder are not real folders, they are Junctions that are there to allow legacy programs to interface to Windows 7's folder structure.

Windows 7 uses C:\Users\*your user name*\Documents and C:\Users\*your user name*\Appdata
(Appdata is a hidden folder) to accomplish what Documents and Settings did in XP.

PS. Added picture of me trying to extract 2 DIFFERENT executables from Winrar (files completely unrelated to the video game)

Is this possible? We have about 100 remote users who access our office network via VPN rather than RAS. All of these users are running either W2K or XP.

Our problem is that the internet settings on these laptops have been set (purposely) to automatically download updates from the Win Updates site. This bit works fine! But these updates cannot be installed as the users do not have administrator permissions on their local machine.

Is there a way of allowing these updates to install without giving the users full admin rights? (We REALLY don't want to give them these rights as suffice it to say that some of them are not as computer savvy as we would like.)

I have heard a little birdy say that there is a registry update which can bypass the above problem, but how and where?

Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks muchly.

I'm trying to inject an DLL with an old program, which worked fine before I re-installed. My old setup was Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 + All updates.

My current setup is the same, Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 and all updates available through Windows Update. (except sp3)

However, it doesn't work. I think it's a privileges issue. My user account is "Administrator" and a part of the "Administrators" group. I've also enabled the "Debug Programs" privileges on my account, even though it's already on by default for administrators.

It fails on this function:

It just returns 0. Even though the HWND i'm passing to it is correct (checked, 100 times.)

any suggestions?

Hello! As the title says I can't do anything that requires admin privileges on my computer whether it's running a program as admin or deactivting my firewall/antivirus etc etc. Whenever I try to deactivate my firewall/antivirus nothing happens, and when I try to run a program as admin I end up with a window giving me an error message (I'll add a picture of it). So if anyone has got a clue on how to fix this then please help me, I would appreciate it so much!
EDIT: It's exactly the same error for every program that I try to run. The only thing that isn't the same is the file path shown, it shows the program that I'm trying to run.

Hi Joelmosen First of all, I want to give you a warning about one program you have on your desktop, ComboFix. ComboFix is a very powerful reporting and scripting tool that was developped by sUBs, used by members of the malware removal team here on BleepingComputer (and also on other forums). This tool can easily break a Windows installation if poorly and/or wrongly used. It can make the whole system unbootable and also delete everything present on your drives (leaving you with close to no chance of recovery) or damage your Windows installation so badly that you would be forced to reinstall it. Therefore, you should not be using ComboFix unless you are in one of the two situation listed below:You have been trained in an online malware removal forum to use ComboFix;You are using it under the supervision and instructions of a trained malware removal professional on BleepingComputer or another recognized malware removal forum (UNITE forums for example); If you already ran ComboFix on your system and need assistance with the log, you will have to post a thread in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section of BleepingComputer, where a trained helper will assist you.If you have any questions or concerns about ComboFix, quietman7 wrote a FAQ on it and you'll find all your answers in it.ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look hereAlso be aware that BleepingComputer doesn't provide any advice on how to use ComboFix on your own, due to the nature of the tool and how dangerous it can be when used without supervision or proper training. Is the error message the same for every programs you right-click on and select Run as Administrator? Did you ever run ComboFix on your own on your system? On a side note, that version of AdwCleaner is outdated.

I left on vacation over the past weekend. Upon my arrival home, I went to my computer to check my mail. I noticed a second account but thought nothing of it on the log-in screen. Later, as I am trying to update my programs such as iTunes, I come to find out that my administrator privileges are gone. My roommate has confessed to changing adding an administrator account and demoting my account. However, the password he set was from a random password generator and is only recorded in a text file on the desktop of the admin account. How do I regain my administrative privileges on the computer and delete the other account?

I have an HP Pavillion p7-1207c.

A:How do I regain Admin privileges?

Not a smart guy... that roommate of yours!

User Account Password - Change from WinRE

In step 7 do:

net user name_of_admin_account *
Now give the name_of_admin_account a new password so you can logon. Now you can give the other acount admin priviliges. You can delete the name_of_admin_account when logged on as admin account. Step 8 to 13 aren't needed of course

Not necessarily. A standard user account can be infected by some malware. But yes, it is a preventive measure and should be used.Read this : suggest, that you use Sandboxie and run your browser inside it. runs your programs (like your browser) in a totally isolated space, so even if a malicious site installs something, all you have to is clean the contents of Sandboxie. Some antivirus like avast! also have an inbuilt sandbox which run suspicious programs inside it automatically, preventing them to make actual changes to your computer.

I wrote a Script that uninstalls an application, move some files and install an Application.
The Script is working if I start it as Admin (right click - run as Admin ...).
Everything works fine.

But I want to have it working without the "run as".
The script is only used in a separated Test system,
so there is no problem if the Admin user name and password is in the script.
(also link wouldn't work, should also work if it moves to another station within the test domain)

Is there a way to manage that?

A:Admin privileges in batch script

Batch command runas with a standard trick
echo password | runas
it is NOT going to work, because the password should be entered manually.

If you do not mind clicking Yes in UAC window you can use Elevate.exe
With it you won't need writing password anywhere
"C:\yourFOLDER\elevate.exe" "C:\yourScriptFOLDER\yourScript.bat"
would be enough to start script with admin privileges (still need to click YES on UAC window).

When users with admin privileges have ownership of files and folders, do those files and folders remain, or are they deleted?

This question arises from having tried to copy my primary admin profile to that of a new (backup) admin user. During that tedious and unsuccessful process, I had to change ownership and privileges of a number of folders and files, and now some of my programs are having trouble finding needed files. So rather than wading through everything and changing the settings back, I'd prefer to delete the new admin user -- as long as I won't lose the files.

Does that even make sense? (It's way past my bedtime!)

A:Deleting Users With Admin Privileges

Make copys of all the files you want to keep or use an admin account and pull the files onto the account you wish to keep then delete the old one. As long as you have a copy that you have privileges to on the account you are going to keep you should be fine, just make sure to keep a copy of all the files that you can get into.
