Preferred Solution: Computer Locks Up After Short Period Of Time

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer will freeze for a short period of time. It happens constantly, and will happening when even if I am doing something simple like browsing chrome. Everything the computer does just stops, even my cursor. Then after about 5 minutes everything will go back to normal.

Hello Nissan & welcome.

Analyses
Most of your dumps are including your Graphic Driver. So to really make a secure uninstall and get rid of the leftover files of the uninstallation from the Control Panel, we'll use some specific tools. The little guide below tells you what to do to uninstall and install your Nvidia-driver.

Tutorial

i) Find your driver here, save it to your desktop
ii) Download Driver sweeper, for the leftover files
iii) Uninstall your driver from the Control Panel
iv) While rebooting, go into safe-mode without internet (tip: plugout your LAN cable or disconnect wireless)
v) Run Driver Sweeper, click all the Nvidia components and analyse them
vi) Clean them all
vii) Head into Windows, without internet
viii) Install the Driver from the desktop

I have a very similar problem to this person, (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic160500.html) except I am running Windows XP home edition.
I downloaded a file I presumed would be safe, scanned it with Mcafee before opening it and unwittingly installed Total Secure 2009.
My computer then froze up so I had to restart. On restart, I managed to scan using Mcafee and Ad-aware, Mcafee found RemAdm-Generic (C:\windows\system32\LMInit.dll), Ad-aware found a few PuP's I removed.
I then restarted again, and a new account had been created "Admin" and I couldn't open the task manager on other accounts.
I tried to run MBAM, but after 3-4ish minutes the computer logged me out, then froze on the login screen.
Anyone help out? I don't like having to restart every 3-4 minutes

A:Task manager - disabled, computer freezes up after a short period of time, "VIRUS ALERT!" on the right of clock

First:Download ESET SysInspectorhttp://www.eset.com/download/sysinspector.php- Start program through the SysInspector.exeThe program will collect information about the situation on your machine.- When "inspector" is ready and log file - generated, select File> Save Log- Confirm their wishChoose to save the file somewhere and then upload on http://4storing.com/ (when you open the page, click on the Great Britain flag to open the page in English), then give me the link.

Hello.

I encountered several BSODs within days of each other. I don't play games or download anything on my PC. I just use it for surfing the net and general usage (mostly Office). I also technically faced a blue screen just 2 days ago. I clicked on a folder and suddenly my monitor flickered and I saw a flash of blue before it went black.

I am using Windows 7 32 bit.

I am not very tech savvy so I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Attached are the minidump files.

Thank you very much.

As we can see a memory volume is corrupt somewhere, so lets see if we can track it down.

Can you try this please: Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and resolve any file system structural corruption. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition.

I'll cut to the chase - my computer is crashing, a lot. It seems to do it mostly when I am either 1) allowing it to idle and do nothing for more than a few seconds, or 2) performing medial tasks like writing in Word or something like that.

All of my info is attached in a zipped file.

I'm specifically focused on the three most recent crashes (Codes 3b, 24, and 1e) . There should be a lot more in there because my system seems to bug-check if I leave it idle for more than 20-30 seconds, but my computer wasn't creating .dmp files until I ran chkdsk with both options selected.

Let me know if you need any further info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My laptop is shutting down after a short period of time.  This started about two months after installing windows 10.   I checked my settings and they are what I want so resetting them probably won't help.  I saw an answer to this problem that read as follows:   What does "remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'." mean?   I don't see a box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen' with a tick. Open windows Control Panel, open Personalization, click the Screen Saver link in the bottom right and in the following window adjust the 'Wait' time to a more acceptable figure and remove the tick from the box next to 'On resume, display log-on screen'.  Click Apply, then Ok to save this setting.

A:Laptop freezes after a short period of time

That model has been out for about three years? How long have you had your Inspiron 6400?

We need to know the configuration, including hard drive size, brand, free space, as well as memory installed.

It could be that the CPU cooling is too full of dust, hair, fiber, etc. to cool adequately... or that the hard drive is failing, or that you have inadequate memory. But it could simply be an infestation that needs to be cleaned out.

Have you tried re-enabling Windows Installer? Have you attempted to use MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, ComboFix, Windows Defender, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, or other top-flite spyware detectors and removers?

I have been having this problem for about a year now where my computer hangs for a few seconds and then resumes. During the 'freeze', I can still move my mouse, but programs stall or won't open until the freeze is 'over'. If there is a media player playing, it'll freeze and loop the audio or just crash completely. When I'm listening to music, It'll stop and then resume after the freeze. The problem never leads to BSOD or anything, but it's getting pretty annoying.

I have run chkdsk several times and there were no errors and I'm sure all of my drivers are updated.

Anyone know what the problem may be?

A:Computer hangs for a short period and then resumes

I think its a small virus causing the problem. You can check online with many brands of antivirus to see what you might have.
The virus may be taking many resources from your computer so you have this issues or perhaps its part of the problems that the virus is supposed to do.
Also, I suggest you to make a backup of your files because you never know what these kind of problems will lead to
Tell us if you find a virus during your checks.

My desktop computer recently got BSOD once. I thought it was nothing and so I restarted my PC. After around 10 minutes, it BSODed again. I restarted again and boom! After around 10-15 minutes, another BSOD appeared. What could be the problem? Did something I recently installed cause this?(MagicJack) Or other malfunctions? My computer is really weak and was busted several times before and It was loaded with games but I managed to uninstall almost all of them 2 weeks before it got the BSOD

Hey guys So I am running an Hp Pavilion a n computer with Windows Ultimate bit I have just started to recently have some really annoying issues When I try to open google chrome or any other program really the computer doesn't do anything for literally like minutes then it opens Now when it opens it will work for a little while but then time of a for period freezes randomly Computer it will stop trying to load pages I Computer randomly freezes for a period of time will hit new tab and it will just load a white page and I can't do anything It took me minutes to get to this website alone After awhile the computer starts working and everything is smooth but then it freezes up again I can still click stuff but it doesn't load or do anything Another example is in Windows Media Player When I click to play a new song sometimes it just says media changing for a good minutes before it ever works or if I hit the X to close it it will take just as long Nothing works at all when the computer freezes I can't open anything like computer or control panel nor can I close anything Any ideas

A:Computer randomly freezes for a period of time

Can I assume you're defragging your hard drive regularly?

If so, then try booting into Safe Mode with Networking. Then attempt to get on the web and see if that makes any difference. If not, the problem is likely hardware related. So you could run a hard drive diagnostic program and check temperatures and voltages in BIOS to determine whether there's overheating or a power issue. You can also run mdsched.exe or Memtest86 to test for RAM errors.

The last 2 days i have noticed that after around 30mins or so i can no longer open files/internet/pics etc

Nothing can be opened but window tabs can be minimized and have full use of mouse and keyboard.

I cant open task manage when this happens and only a restart works.
This can only be done manually via the reset button on base unit and not via Windows restart function.

Ive run full AV scan with MSE and came back clean.

Not installed any programs within this time, the only thing that i can think of updating was Firefox 2 days ago.

many thanks for any help

A:PC freezing after short period

If you created a System Restore point prior to updating Firefox, you could use that restore point to roll back your system.

If you don't already have it, and can get on the web (or otherwise place a downloaded installer on the problem computer), you should try a full scan with Malwarebytes after allowing it to update.

A:30 day activation period cut short

When you try to boot XP a page should open with Let's Activate Windows at the top. There should be three options, Yes, let's activate Windows now over the Internet, Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and you have already precluded the other option. Once you have a valid product code click on the option that you wish to use and it should prompt you through the process.

Where are you getting the product code from?

Hey everyone I had quite the confusing issue on my hands I believe it to be hardware related but i could be wrong I had recently built a system and installed Windows on for on Computer time if long login of period restarts shutdown it Everything appeared to work flawlessly The only issue is if the computer is off for an extended period of time thinking around hours it will reboot itself before it can enter the login screen although it does make it to the loading screen After a lot of troubleshooting i realized that simply flipping the switch on and off on the back of the power supply will allow it to boot into Computer restarts on login if shutdown for long period of time windows fine Also using the repair utility on windows will let me boot in fine too without reseting the power supply manually i believe I thought it may have been a power supply issue but i have replaced it with a higher wattage high end one and the issue still occurs The Ram is checking out OK too The only thing i can think of is that there is an issue with the motherboard I assume when the system is off the motherboard still has power since the keyboard light remains on It seems i need to kill the power to the board completely Or maybe this is a Windows issue since its relatively new The fact that this only occurs if the system is off for hours really puzzles me Besides this one error the system runs beautifully I am really at a loss here Any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance nbsp

A:Computer Keeps Crashing When Running Spyware Or After A Period Of Time After Going Online

The symptoms you describe could be due to hardware or overheating problems caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, etc. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis. Some rootkits can also trigger BSODs, shutdowns and various stop error/shutdown messages so it would also be wise to perform a scan for this type of problem. Download and scan with Sophos Anti-rootkit, Panda AntiRootkit or AVG Anti-Rootkit.Before performing an ARK scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver. Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection. After starting the scan, do not use the computer until the scan has completed. When finished, re-enable your anti-virus/anti-malware (or reboot) and then you can reconnect to the Internet.Note: Not all hidden components detected by ARKs are malicious. It is normal for a Firewall, some Anti-virus and Anti-malware software (ProcessGuard, Prevx1, AVG AS), sandboxes, virtual machines and Host based Intrusion Prevention Systems (HIPS) to hook into the OS kernal/SSDT in order to protect your system. You should not be alarmed if you see any hidden entries created by these software programs after performing a scan.If you're not finding any malware then its sounds like the latter problem. However, since you're getting a 0X0000008E error, see You receive a random "0x0000008E" error message on a blue screen in Windows XP.

A:HijackThis- msmsgs.exe uses 100% cpu if computer left on for extended period of time

Hi Chris and welcome to TSF.

Is MSN Messenger doing anything special (besides having IM chats) when it reaches 100% cpu usage?

Let's try disabling some programs there to see if it helps.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following if they still exist and hit 'Fix Checked' after you checked the last one:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] F:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Component Manager] "F:\Program Files\HP\hpcoretech\hpcmpmgr.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] F:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "F:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = F:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

Check and fix ALL the O18 entries below related to Logitech, except for the first line (see below). Leave that entry unchecked:

O18 - Protocol: bw+0 - {00023EC9-21B9-4198-912A-39C403681302} - F:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\BWPlugProtocol-8876480.dll

I am not quite sure where to start...as it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Hello,

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

I keep randomly having BSOD on WIN 7 x64 when i left it on for long periods of time without using it. Sometimes though rarely, the whole OS will not respond to anything while i'm using and i have little choice but to use the reboot button. I have no idea what causes this issue. This has been happening since i got this computer roughly 1 year plus ago but i didn't really bothered till recently as it's getting more frequent. Was hoping someone can shed some light on to what is giving this issue to me.

I've discovered this issue predates Windows 10 and some online posters noticed something I have been able to verify in my situation.  It you restart, boot up, or wake from sleep with the power button the system doesn't go to sleep after a brief period of idling.  If you wake it from sleep with keyboard or mouse it does go to sleep.  I think better stated would be, it returns to sleep.  This discovery explains why at times I have thought the issue had somehow been resolved. Using the power button to wake up a system is an OK work around, but not ideal.

Please help! My Windows Vista Home Premium continuously freezes after a short period of not using it. It can vary from 30 minutes to an hour or two. I do not have screen savers and turning off monitors or hard disks on.

I've checked a couple of the forum threads here, and I noticed someone helped somebody else with a similar problem (Windows freezes in idle time). I did all the actions "usasma" suggested in his post, so hopefully I can get some much appreciated assistance.

I'm uploading these files that the user "usasma" said to upload, in hopes that someone can help me fix the issue. Oh and I am using a laptop, so upgrading the hardware would be difficult for me.

Thank you all very much!

A couple of months ago I had one of my graphics card 'die' Code on me you can see the thread about it here Could my graphics card have died and now my second graphics card has done the same thing - except I haven't had the same 'monitor not displaying' problems that I had with the first one I was playing Just Cause at the time of period? cards Probability with short probs graphics both a within it's not that power-hungry at all really Probability of both graphics cards with probs within a short period? and it wasn't that long into the game when the graphics went funny and crashed froze my computer Force restarting my computer I was greeted with these lines sorry for the slightly blurry image - the RAM was still counting up at the time of this picture btw I still had the Code Probability of both graphics cards with probs within a short period? under quot D Video Controller quot even after I installed the latest graphics driver sure of it and I still have it now However one thing has Probability of both graphics cards with probs within a short period? changed since the previous problem I installed a -bit Windows Home Premium still back in January - so perhaps that's why I didn't get a BSOD this time ps I have never overclocked my cards and I don't think I ever want to too risky for my liking

A:Probability of both graphics cards with probs within a short period?

It could certainly be the graphics card. I would check the monitor cables and stuff before just assuming though.

This is an odd problem This has been happening for a few days now and I'm at a bit of a loss about what the problem is exactly It seems to have started after a recent Windows update but I'm not sure exactly what specific element has screwed things up for me and it may have taken a bit of time for me to notice the problem due to the nature of it I wouldn't know when to roll back my system to even if I was willing to try and I'm not at this point If I leave Windows alone for more than a few minutes it freezes This happens without fail and it's consistent Any more than five minutes give or take a minute or two and it's frozen hard and requires a hard reset Ctrl alt del doesn't work alt tab doesn't work nothing but the power button or the reset button on the case has any affect There is no error message there is no spinning wheel mouse icon the mouse pointer doesn't move It's just frozen and no input does anything The when Idle hard Windows a period. freeze for 10 short screen just has Windows 10 hard freeze when Idle for a short period. a still image of whatever was displaying when it happened and audio is also dead no system sounds or anything There was sound once but it was when I had a game running and left it too long and it was just that locked up audio buzzing sound It's a hard lockup of my system and not just the video getting stuck It also doesn't matter if something is running If I have a video or game running it still happens As long as I'm not actively inputting something with an input device such as the keyboard mouse or a gamepad it locks up If I pause a game to go get something to eat it's frozen when I come back if I'm watching a video and get up to go to the bathroom it's locked up when I get back it doesn't matter if I pause whatever it is or leave it running If I'm doing something typing playing a game or whatever it will run for hours uninterrupted No problems whatsoever I've got Fallout and I've played for several hours without any problems as long as I'm sitting there and actually playing the game It's like the PC is trying to go to sleep or go into an idle or power saving mode from a lack of input and is crashing hard as a result The problem is I've disabled everything that would do that I'm running Windows x Home edition I have an i k Gb of Ram two Radeon HD s in Xfire doesn't matter if this is on or off and my boot drive is a SSD It's not a new system and Windows has been running fine on it for several months now I've already disabled all screensavers there are no scheduled tasks or updates screwing with anything They all happen in the middle of the night and nothing is pending All my drivers are up to date caches have been cleared and everything runs fine as long as I'm there and active The usual suite of common updating software such as adobe and virus definitions are also up to date so that isn't it either I have already disabled shut downs and sleeping in the power settings Every power setting has been adjusted so that my PC never shuts down on its own and was already set that way to begin with I've double checked and everything is still set the way it should be I've already turned off Link State Power Management in all power settings That isn't it either I do have AMD's new Crimson drivers but this was happening before I installed them That's not the source of the problem I installed the new driver in the hope of maybe fixing the problem and it had no effect on it I've scanned for viruses malware and adware My system is clean My temps are fine all system monitors show a clean bill of health and no unusual activity spikes in my hardware Task Manager processes and services don't show any extra or unusual programs running Nothing is out of the ordinary when this happens outside of there being no input for a bit There are no error messages popping up at all No BSOD or indication of any problems outside of the freezing itself It just locks up suddenly and once it does no input does anything but a reset usi... A:Windows 10 hard freeze when Idle for a short period.

Hi, some thoughts and a possible temporary 'fix' to get you by for now.. while you research the many threads there are on sleep issues on the forum, and some questions that may help anyone looking at this.

First, have a look at this and see if it relates to your situation:
Solved Win 10 Unattended Sleep Timeout - Same as Vista, Win 7,8[.1] ? - Windows 10 Forums

If not fixed:
1. If you put your PC to sleep or into hibernation manually, can you resume successfully?
2. Have you tried a clean boot - what happens?
3. You can also use shellexview (freeware) to disable shell extensions (hide all MS items first, the disable the rest) and see what happens- should not need to restart to try.

Finally, to keep you going for now: try downloading and installing 'Don't Sleep' (freeware).
Running this may stop your PC going into this odd state.

My computer goes to sleep in just a short time after using. If a longer time it has to be restarted. Would appreciate some help if any one knows the problem. I use IE and Vista.

A:computer goes to sleep short time after use

Have you checked the Power settings?
Right click the Desktop
Personalize > Screen Saver > Change power settings link
This will show you when the monitor and or hard drive is set to go to sleep. If you want to extend the time frame or disable the sleep option entirely, you can reconfigure it there.

Do you have Service Pack one for Windows Vista installed?
Let us know what you find.

I run XP home SP2 on a gateway desktop. I leave the system running 24/7 (use a wirless laptop through the gateway desktop to print). After a period of inactivity (the lenght varies) the system locks up. The the desktop is still visable on the screen and the mouse pointer is frozen. I am not able to access the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) so I am forced to use the power button to shut down and reboot. I am not real tech-minded but sometimes I surprise myself. Any ideas.

A:System Locks Up After A Period Of Inactivity

Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time the system locks up.To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.Check in all three categories (Application, Security, and System). If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Copy the information in the window and post it back here. This will help us diagnose your problem. How To Use the Event Viewer

Have you tested the hdd? I'd run the hdd manufacturers diagnostic tool on the drive to make sure it's healthy.Having said that it could be a software problem, has this started after installing something new?The next time it freezes have a look here:StartControl PanelPerformance and MaintenaceAdmin ToolsEvent ViewerSystemHighlight a error then click properties, then click on the link below For more information, see Help and Support Center as this may give you information on how to solve the error.

Hi,

In the last week or so, my computer has lost the ability to shutdown normally.
After that, nothing will open (command prompt, task manager, etc..) but the computer is not frozen. Now, when I turn the computer on, it seems like after 10 or 15 minutes, the same thing happens.

I have used Avast! antivirus software and it found [email protected] (was marked as a rootkit) and win32:dowloader-HQR (trojan).

However, after have quarantined these problems, the computer has not been fixed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

A:Blue screen quickly flashes and restarts after short period of booting

First you need to stop the restarts so you can read the BSOD.

Turn off auto restart - right click my computer, properties, left click advanced, and in the startup and recovery section left click the settings button and uncheck the box 'automatically restart'... next time it will blue screen properly, then you make a note of the exact message and post it here.

Second, since the hd's use 2 different controllers, the mobo isn't a prime suspect (new you say?).

Check your temps and voltages during any period where it stays on for a bit.

Check that the cpu heatsink is secure (socket 775 stock units can be hard to seat).

Anyway this is a brand new APU build I've only had the computer for a few days now anytime I try and play Dayz for STOP any while for period, playing BSOD long/short game 0xA0000001 example after a good amount of time it will just BSOD on me after a restart and lets say you try and launch the game again BSOD while playing any game for long/short period, STOP 0xA0000001 it will BSOD during the loading process If you try and run lets say two games at once it'll BSOD after a little while I have a strong feeling it's a heat issue with the stock heatsink and I have a evo coming Monday so I would hope that would be the cause but to make sure I rather ask some other people I know for a fact this stock heatsink isn't able to cool this chip because you can check Core Temp or Speecy and the chip is at around C which of course you panic and kind of lay off of it for a little bit a few days ago I actually believe it hit C before I shut the computer down That's way too hot so I do believe the majority of these BSOD are heat related but it could be heat and driver related possibly as well Anyway here are my computer specifications as well Motherboard GA-F A XM-D H Memory GB x GB CORSAIR Vengeance Mhz CPU AMD A - GFX Radeon D Hard drive GB Seagate RPM PSU OCZ Fatal ty W Currently chip temp with just the internet browser open is literally C I think these BSOD are heat related What do you think I am pretty certain lol I have included the ZIP of the dump files and such as stated per sticky thread

A:Computer Freezing for a short time (Hardware Fault)

Identical problem here.. hard drive light goes solid and pc just stops for 1 min, still able to move the mouse cursor but cannot slect anything or alt-tab etc. Any alt tab or double clicking is cached up and then all fired off at once when the minute freeze is up.

I'm pretty certain now it's down to my Asus P5K-E motherboard (which is what I assume the original poster has)

I'm looking towards M/Board now as I have swapped drives and changed CPU from Q6600 to Q8200 also switched from Vista 32bit to Win7 64bit and still get the issue.

I alleviated it for a while by switching my SATA 300 drive down to 150 mode by setting the jumpers.

Have flashed the P5K to the latest bios with no joy.

Full specs are..
Q8200 Quad
Asus P5K-E Wifi Premium
500GB Samsung SATA300
4GB Ram
lightscribe 20x DVDRW
Sony Bluray Drive (installed after problem had already appeared)
2 x ATI HD3870's in crossfire config.
Windows 7 64bit / WinXP dual boot.

Hi all,

I have a work computer that locks up everyday around the same time 5:00pm - 6:00pm

It doesnt matter whether im typing an email or saving a document or just sitting there, it freezes and i must restart or relog to correct the problem. After i restart, everything is fine until the next day.

Computer: Dell Inspiron 2650
OS: Windows XP Pro
Related software: MS Office 2003 Small business edition
Network: Microsoft Server 2003

I've checked the computer regarding any scheduled tasks and there are none. I confirmed that the server is not limiting any session duration or scheduling tasks to the computer. No other computers here have the problem.

Very frustrating and i wanted to check here before i wipe the computer.

Thanks

Hello folks I hope everyone is having a great day I m trying to troubleshoot my Uncle s computer After turning on the computer it seems to always Computer won't passed. has start some back up, until time up locks lock up It usually locks up within minutes I tried running memtest and spinrite to check the ram and hard drive Computer locks up, won't start back up until some time has passed. but the computer locks up before the tests can complete After the computer locks up I power the machine down If I try to start the computer back up it does seem to get power the lights come and Computer locks up, won't start back up until some time has passed. and I can hear everything starting up but nothing will show up on the monitor I know the Computer locks up, won't start back up until some time has passed. problem isn t the monitor because I am using a different monitor than the one my Uncle had when he was experiencing this problem One thing that might be a clue is that when the computer does come on successfully I can hear the monitor make a little sound when I power on the machine it is an older monitor It is not a beep or anything but more of just a sound like it is waking up or something But when the computer doesn t come on the monitor doesn t make any sound at all and the light on the monitor just alternates between yellow and green When the computer is working the light turns stays green Perhaps the monitor is not getting any signal After some time has passed I usually wait several hours and I try to turn the computer on again it will successfully come up but of course will lock up after a little while and the process repeats The computer is running Windows XP nbsp

A:Computer locks up, won't start back up until some time has passed.

When you run memtest, I assume this is from a boot disk or flash drive; correct?
If so, that points at a hardware problem. Here is what I would do;

1 With the system OFF, I would open the case and give the board a VERY close inspection with a bright light. See if you have any capacitors that look like the ones below. If you find any, you have found your problem.

2 If the board looks OK, I would install a known good pw supply as a test. Note known good does not mean new; it means a pw supply pulled from a working system that you know works.

3 If you still have the problem, then I would boot the system with a linux live type CD. This will tell you very quickly if you have a windows problem or a hardware problem. There are a LOT of linux distros however I use parted magic This has both memory and hard drive testing as part of the distro.

I have desktop that is less than years old and it is having two problems First if I step away from the computer for a few minutes and come back to the computer the screen is black and none of the keys will wake up the monitor Also I am unable to turn off the tower even when holding down the button for seconds The only way to turn it off is to unplug the tower When I plug it back in I get everything back on the screen just like it was before I walked away The other problem is that the system clock will not keep time This just happened a week or so ago Whenever I manually update the sync it resets but won t keep time for long From reading other posts on this forum it seems that the CMOS battery may be an issue Since the computer isn t that old and isn t used constantly does that still seem reasonable Is that normally covered under a warranty I have never had a problem with other computers Thanks nbsp

Posting here after google led me to a thread here with a similar problem though I never really discovered what their solution was System- ABIT AT X motherboard with ATI Xpress chipset dualcore AMD Athlon X later on light while solid, system up locks short a HDD goes GB RAM x MB PCIe Radeon X GTs in crossfire mode Western Digital GB SATA HDD Windows Vista Ultimate x At completely random intervals with no obvious pattern the HDD light just goes on and stays on The system continues to run HDD light goes on solid, system locks up a short while later normally for a bit except that no new data can be loaded for whatever I'm doing- i e HDD light goes on solid, system locks up a short while later if i'm playing a game if anything new such as a player joining an FPS game happens their model wont show up for example and music gets stuck in a short loop then windows eventually I affecitonately call this has a heart attack and locks up Things I've checked - microsoft memory tester boot CD runs for half an hour no errors found - CHKDSK full scan turns up no errors except some data loss if the problem occured while data was being written -Cleaned dust from fan grills and front rear panel vents System locked up while typing this message twice so posting now in case I lose it again there Several months ago when my PC seemed to be in good shape and was running quite cool I decided to try OC'ing the CPU very slightly mhz to the clock literally Though I didn't experience any problems I turned it back to normal the HDD light goes on solid, system locks up a short while later same day because I decided I wasnt much of a risk taker a month later Windows update offers me a driver update for my SATA controller Silicon Image SiL SATALink Controller I installed that A few weeks after that is when the problem began Saving post again because I'm paranoid I tried rolling back the SATA driver No effect Even though this could happen at any time even before windows starts on a cold literally its in a - F environment in the morning boot I went and put a HDD cooler underneath the drive All that did was add some noise to the case D The earliest I've had it happen is right after the BIOS splash screen dissapears and I see the SATA controller detecting listing the drives in the system But it can happen any time- During boot up as I said while windows is loading or anytime while using the PC after hours of uptime or more Sometimes I go a few days without it happening sometimes it happens multiple times a day Because of the times i've seen it happen I'm thinking either a power problem or a problem with the HD While this might not be related I have a question- my HD has both a SATA power connector and the standard molex connector Does it actually matter which I use using the sata connector right now Should I try using the other I'm hoping sort of that it's the hard drive and not the motherboard Since things continue to function more or less normally if it happens while windows is running for sec- - minutes or so I don't think the CPU is having a problem But I figured I'd find a forum to post for help before I run out and buy a new hard drive only to have it not fix the problem Even though I should get a new one anyway GB is just not cutting it D Thanks in advance for any advice

A:HDD light goes on solid, system locks up a short while later

a small additional note, if hte system is completely idle with no apps or anything running, nothing will happen. As far as I can tell it only happens when there's disk activity.

Hello, I'm sure Shawn is aware of this setting, and I'm sure he'll eventually read this, and can link me to the post to how to do it =)

I have my computer set up to when it is idle after 5 minutes, it will turn the screen blank for 3 seconds then it will show the lock screen. Sometimes I'm at the computer desk busy doing something non-computer related, and all of a sudden I notice in the corner of my eye that the screen goes blank. I had the computer set up to whenever that happened I grab the mouse real quick and move it to come right back to whatever was showing on the screen before it goes to the lock screen. Reason why I want to catch it right in time is so I don't have to re-type the password at the lock screen. There is a setting somewhere that lets me do that. Where is it again?

Hi all.

I am currently running Combofix on my laptop, however I am a bit worried about how long it is taking.

It at present only states:

Deleting Files/Folders:

"C:\Program Files\JavaCore\JavaCore.exe"
"C:\Program Files\JavaCore\UnInstall.exe"
"C:\Program Files\network monitor\netmon.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\dobe~1\msdtc.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\dobe~1\?dobe\"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\msnav32.ax"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\zxdnt3d.cfg"

It has been like this for 15 minutes, should I be worried?

It may be having trouble waking up.
I have mine set to monitor off after 15 mins and sleep set to never.

My pc randomly reboots itself after a period of time. It usually happens when Im running about 3-4 IE browsers, AIM, and Outlook Express for a while. i thought it was my overclocked CPU that was the problem, so i disabled over heat turn-off in the BIOS. Could there be errors in my registry?

Athlon 2500+ XP overclocked to 3400+ (42 C at rest)
Abit NF7-S2 Motherboard

A:PC Reboots itself after being on for a period of time

That processor is seriously overclocked.

Overclocking reduces the lifespan of the hard ware and also overclocks the RAM and PCI bus, so have you tried not overclocking the system?

There is no point in turning off the overheating monitor in the BIOS if the processor isn't overheating, which it doesn't appear to be doing if its temperature is only 42 degrees.

Hello,

I have been getting these BSoD's for a while now, and I have tried to figure them out, but I can't seem to. It's normally a "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" or something along those lines. It generally happens when I try to play any intensive games. I have tried updating my drivers, or at least my graphic drivers.

My Specs:
Age: A year and a few months.
OS: Windows 7 Professional x64 (Service Pack 1 - Retail)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU q6700
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 260
Sound Card: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty

I am unable to preform the 'perfmon /report' as it gives me this error:
The interface is unknown.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Multiple BSoD over a period of time.

There are two causes:

1. Your Death Adder mouse software driver is the main cause, please update its driver
Razer Drivers

2. sptd.sys, part of Deamon Tools and Alcohol 120%

   Information
Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads
You can use MagicDisc as an alternative.

My computer is set to automatically lock after 10 minutes of user idle. I want to run a task when I log on, but only if the machine has previously been idle for an hour. This is so the task only runs when I've actually been away from the computer, not just if it's timed out. Is this possible?

A:Run task on unlock after certain period of time

1. Have you tried task scheduler - create task -... triggers - new -begin .. - on WS unlock
Then once it is setup disable it. But you would have to enable it if you knew how long the machine would be unattended.
I did not see any option for the task to run only if idle for 1 hour though.

2. Or you could not use task scheduler - just set up a .bat file and run it manually as needed.

I am thinking of getting DVDXCopy; but, I don't know which edition. I have looked at this product comparison table and I see only the Platinum edition as being capable of copying a DVD in under an hour; but, there is no direct time comparison between it and any other editions.

Just based on what is written in the table, Platinum might do it is 59 minutes and 59 seconds and the other editions in 60 minutes or even two or three hours, for all I can tell from the table. In other words, for time comparison, the chart isn't very helpful.

Does anyone here have any of these programs? Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Hi been awhile since I last posted. In the house we have a desktop and 2 laptops on the go in the house. The desktop is wired internet while the laptops are run on wifi. This worked fine until my isp UPC upgraded my internet speed from 50mb to 120mb.. The desktop and one of the laptops still works fine but the acus laptop has web access for between 20 mins to 45mins before the wifi drops off and becomes limited access. The wifi needs to be renabled to regain access to the wifi which lasts another small while until it gets limited access again.

The laptop specs are:
Acus K53e
Windows 7 home premium 64bit
intel Centrino N100 wifi adapter
Ram 6gig

At the moment its running for 30 mins then wifi cuts off for a few seconds before starting up again.

I have taken to SPAR Artee Industrial on 29/09/14 but they are not providing free replacement not they are able to repairs as Charging PIN has spoiled. THe part is not available locally. The JBP Speaker are not working at all now.

Kindly suggest, for the Customer Care Complaints I am unable to find the Customer Care/ Replacement Customer Care / Service Center / Top Management Contact numbers for getting help for repairs / replacement.

I used the recommended software from this forum to gather all of the logs and post it.

I have tried using Heaven DX11 to stress test the video card and ran it for..45minutes+ allowing the GPU to get to a heat of 80C and no BSOD.

It has BSODed when playing Dota 2, or Borderlands 2. (I don't play many games)

It BSODed once when I finished playing a game and chrome opened 32 tabs on accident, but this is a beast of a machine it should be able to handle it.

G'day all,

My computer with XP Pro when idle for 15 minutes (exactly) the hard drive will start up chattering by itself.

I open "Task Manager" and find that dfrgfat.exe is running.

No 3rd party defrag programs installed, only the Windows XP Pro default defrag.

I run defrag "analyze" and it states hard drive not needed to run defrag.

Once Task manager opens, the dfrgfat.exe stops running till computer is idle 15 minutes again.

There is nothing in Scheduled Tasks.

Any help be much appreciated, this is driving me nuts.

Regards,
John

and it's most likely installed somewhere, some way. Look in the Control Panel, Remove Software area.

Hi all,
I have something strange going on with one of my Windows 7 machines. The user states that she logs off the machine and the screen is at the login screen. She leave it on occasionally so she can log in from home. When she comes in, in the morning her machine is off (even if she didn't remote in)? Any ideas on this would be great because I'm at a loss.

Thanks!!

I have what I thought was a simple time duration formula -- it works fine, unless it goes into a new day? I have each cell formulated as follows:

(Cell A1) Time Arr: 23/06/2010 3:30:00 AM
dd/mm/yyyy - ddd - hh:mm AM/PM

(Cell B1) Time Dep: 24/06/2010 6:00:00 AM
dd/mm/yyyy - ddd - hh:mm AM/PM

(Cell C1) Time at Port:
formula =B1-A1

The result is 2:30 hrs -- not 26:30 as it should be

I am using Exchange Server 2007 and I am wondering what the default email retention period is for all folders? Will Exchange 2007 automatically delete messages after 'x' number of days/weeks/months/years? If it does delete automatically what is the default time period?

Kind Regards,

Now the issue ive been having is that within a set amount of time on any application based game, my computer BSODs. It has no visual cue, just the screen goes dark and the system restarts. This started about a year ago, and has became considerably worse. Whether its Minecraft or Portal 2, my computer dies without warning. I have the MineDump below. I would like to at least know what the problem is before I send it in to GeekSquad repair, as I dont want them to spend weeks trying to figure out whats wrong.

Hi there, I normally leave my computer on overnight so I could do things such as defragging, virus scans and sometimes downloading.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, which I installed 3 days ago as I got a new hard drive. The system was blue screening since then, so I'm guessing it's not a faulty hard drive, OS or memory (Replaced memory and done 20 hours of memtest86+)

I bought this machine about 7 months ago, but since then I have replaced the motherboard, memory, graphics card, CPU cooler and hard drive.

It only seems to bluescreen when idle, like when all it's doing is downloading on uTorrent or has finished doing a defrag.

According to bluescreenview, it has been caused by dxgkrnl.sys, atikmpag.sys and dxgmms1.sys . It was these causing it before the reinstall as well.

A:BSOD when idle for a long period of time.

Quote:
"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

I have a toshiba satelite 205 that has a SD slot. When I insert the card to transfer files I get the error: Semaphore time period has expired......
I read somewhere that if you lock the card that you can view the files, but you still cannot write to or from the disk. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Please help, I really need to use this disk.

A:sd card gets semaphore time period expired error

Hi Ishead!!

I went to toshiba's website and it gives instructions on how to use the card reader properly. I am wondering has the card reader ever worked for you before? How old is the laptop? Maybe it's under warrenty? Need some info to help you out. Thanks

friends
I have a rig I use occasionally, as HTPC and occasional mule work, file service, etc.
I would like to not have it simply sleep when I have left it running and not returned, but rather have it shutdown properly.
Is there a way to do this within win7 controls, or is there an aftermarket, shareware, or scripting way to do so?

thx
z

A:Power Mgmt: Is there a way to Shutdown after idle time period?

Create a batch file and link to it with Windows Task Scheduler and have the scheduler run whenever the computer has been idle for xxxx seconds/minutes.

In the batch file:
shutdown /s /t 300

Shuts down the computer in five minutes forcing all applications to close. You can change it to less time if you want. 300 seconds is five minutes arbitrarily chosen.

The title says it all pretty much, I recently installed start menu 8 great app but for some reason it got rid of IE11 and then I installed open brodcaster latest version ive since known that moment Catalyst control center host program uses very high disk space also sometimes upto %100 and then crashes this also happens to service host loical system (11) which i have a picture for and i recently did an anti malware scan and found 12 peices of malware which i later removed.

A:Abnormal disk usage from OS for certian period of time.

I think it's when the system is just booting up and using a lot of disk space then it goes back to normal 0% after it booted because ive checked and im clean if malware and viruses.

A:Internet wouldn't connect to certain websites for a period of time

Have you tried resetting your router/...?

This is usually achieved by inserting a paperclip into a tiny hole located on the router.....google your router model number to determine exactly where it is.

Press the paperclip end in and hold it in for approx 20 seconds...then release it and wait for the router to boot back up again

Note Be sure  you have the password for your internet a/c/router BEFORE you start.

Hey everyone I looked around a bit and although I found quite a few similar issues I was unable to find any exactly like the one I'm having Basically every weekday during the approximate hours of am- pm my internet will constantly drop By this I do not mean it completely stops working I mean that every few seconds or minutes my internet will cut out for about seconds The reason that this is such a huge problem is I play online video games and working random part-time hours quite often places me in between these hours when playing Also these drops take place even if I'm not on games My computer will usually be the only one online and no matter what I'm doing even just doing something like reading an article online the problem persists Period Random Time Specific During Internet Drops My ISP is Comcast and my router is an ASUS RT-N U Here is my system information Quote OS Name Microsoft Windows Home Premium Version Service Pack Build Other OS Description Not Available OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation System Name KYLE-PC System Manufacturer System manufacturer System Model System Product Name System Type x -based PC Processor Intel R Core TM i - CPU GHz Mhz Core s Logical Processor s BIOS Version Date American Megatrends Inc SMBIOS Version Windows Directory C Windows System Directory C Windows system Boot Device Device HarddiskVolume Locale United States Hardware Abstraction Layer Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period Version quot quot User Name Kyle-PC Kyle Time Zone Eastern Daylight Time Installed Physical Memory RAM GB Total Physical Memory GB Available Physical Memory GB Total Virtual Memory GB Available Virtual Memory GB Page File Space GB Page File C pagefile sys I should also mention that the router is new and the problem existed before I bought Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period it I believed that my old router was the problem and clearly I am wrong Also my router has a WEP on it so there shouldn't be anyone leaching off of my network These also are nowhere near peak hours which adds even more confusion I do live near a school which would normally be open around these hours However it's summer so that isn't the case Thanks in advance for any help

A:Random Internet Drops During Specific Time Period

You should change your wireless security to WPA2 with AES encryption.

The WEP you are using now is outdated and easily hacked into and usually will not work correctly with Windows 7 drivers. This could also cause the connection problems you are seeing now.

You should also uninstall any third party A/V software on this system as they are famous for causing such as you are describing.

If I am looking at packets across the network, any advice regarding what would be a good period (e.g. 1 second, 5 seconds etc) to average the bits transferred over time? i.e. assuming the kbps formular is (bytes in period * 8)/(period), then what would be the typical period applications would report network usage (KBps) on?
