I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an older computer with a 40 GB hard drive. I would like to set it up so that I could play around with both of these OS's. I already have XP pro installed. What would it take to get both of these on separate partitions?? I dont mind re-installing XP pro if it means getting them both on there.
I need to learn active directory(any good tutorials??) for a job. As well as setting up a print server, FTP, and all that JAZZ.

Encouraged by my familys lack of knowledge and ability to really mess with things on my other PC I started to think about my options are as far as limiting person s in my house to only doing certain things on my computer -- which made me think about Servers Dual 2003 Windows 2K and Server booting .NET ability to do this type of thing much easier I started thinking that I do need to learn more about using Windows Server so for these two reasons I am going to dual boot Windows K with Windows Server Surely I won t Dual booting Windows 2K and 2003 .NET Server have any problem playing games on the LAN with Server but does anyone know of any problems that I might encounter This is the main reason I am keeping Windows K installed for the moment just so I can test out Windows Server and see if I am going to have any issues with gaming If not I will be removing Win K and running Server only nbsp

A:Dual booting Windows 2K and 2003 .NET Server

The only problem you may encounter is that its wise to install later operating systems (like 2003 server) AFTER YOU HAVE INSTALLED Windows 2000 Server. The boot technology is usually upgraded between these kinds of things, to the extent that the 2000 bootloader will not handle 2003, etc, or NT4 will not handle 2000, etc. So remember that.

Also, DON'T EVEN DREAM about installing both of these operating systems to the same partition.

Beyond that... I guess all should be fine. Oh, but you did mention games....

Server Operating Systems are generally not optimised for games. If you want to play games, etc better to have some kind of dual boot system with XP, and so forth.

Because of my interest in operating systems, but also in the interests of compatibilty with games, I currently have many operating systems installed. Here is a list|:-

Windows 98
Windows XP
Windows 2000 Advanced Server with Oracle, Exchange, etc.
Windows 2003 server
Red Hat linux 9 with Ximian Gnome 2
Slackware 9.0

And I could add more. If you want some advise on how to create something like this, and make it all work, I will be only too pleased to tell you.

Its nice to have a HDDs dedicated for operating systems and HDDs dedicated for data in these cases, because if you want to make these kinds of complex operating system configs you have to be doing a lot of partitioning, formatting, etc.

hello everyone

I have two hard disks in my pc and installed windows 2003 server on one and netbsd on the other. I can currently boot to both OS's, however, to boot to netbsd i must hold the f12 key during the boot process to select which hard disk it is on. If i let the boot process take its normal course it will only boot to windows server. I would like to set-up a menu select at the start of the boot process so that i can select which OS to boot. Any help would be most appreciated.

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

I have two domain controllers with different domain names but on the same subnet and with active directory installed. One domain controller is win 2000 and the other is win 2003. The computers are in a workgroup the users don't log on but are connected to the win 2000 box with shares to a program. If I take active directory off the win 2000 box and demote will that affect the computers that are In a workgroup connected to the shares? I want to install all the programs and shares on the new win 2003 box but one computer win not let me log on to the win 2003 box it says no domain available. What can I do to slowly migrate the programs and shares to the new server?

I have a client who has an existing Server 2000 domain. He is running two Windows 2000 servers in his domain. What he's looking to do is to replace the master domain controller,(the server which was first brought up and hence contains the master copy of the domain database).

I believe that since this is going to be a completely new server and running Server 2003 standard edtiion I believe, that I'll need to first take everyone out of the domain, demote the second domain controller to a stand-alone and then demote the master domain controller which effectively dissolves the domain. Then after bringing the brand new server up, recreate the domain and then the secondary domain controller and join everyone back into domain (new SID but same domain name).

Does this sound correct-could anyone confirm whether this is correct?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Will someone please explain to me briefly what the difference is between all of these? Why would one want one over the other?

I guess that Windows 2000 is sort of like NT Workstation. If not, please tell me.

And what is the difference between Windows 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server?

A:{Advice Offered} - Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, 2000 Anvanced Server--the difference?

Greetings

Win2K Professional is, indeed, just NT Workstation 5.0

The real difference between Win2K Server and Win2K Advanced Server is scalability. To quote a CNET article: "Three versions of the operating system will be available next week (it's an old article): Windows 2000 Professional, aimed at PCs and workstations; Windows 2000 Server, for file-and-print servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, supporting clustering, which is a way of making several systems act as a single, more powerful computer.

To quote the FAQ from www.winmag.com:
Windows 2000 Professional is the workstation edition of Windows 2000. This is basically Windows NT Workstation 5.0, although Win2K Professional of course includes all of the new technologies for Win2K.

Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server is the server edition of Windows 2000, which is designed to serve small- to mid-sized businesses and workgroups. Server supports up to 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4 processors per computer. Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and 8 processors per computer.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is designed for large businesses and computer clusters. Datacenter supports up to 32 processors per computer and up to 64GB of RAM, as well as built-in clustering and load-balancing features.

Is that what you wanted?

Cheers

A:Solved: Difference b/w Windows Server 2003 and Small Business Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:
- Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory® forest.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.
- A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.
- Each additional server must have a Windows Small Business Server 2003 client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.
The standard edition of Windows Small Business Server 2003 includes Windows Server 2003 technologies, including fax service, firewall service, and remote-access service. Additionally, it includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, enhanced tools for server monitoring and administration, and an out-of-the-box solution for internal Web sites. The standard edition is ideal for customers who do not require the higher-level functionality included in the premium edition

The premium edition includes everything in the standard edition, plus Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, and Microsoft FrontPage® 2003. The premium edition is ideal for small businesses with more demanding IT needs, such as data-intensive line-of-business applications, or advanced firewall and Web-caching capabilities

The standard edition has most of the stuffs inside.

A:win 2000 server booting problem

Hi Rajesh,

If the CD-Rom won't work at all, then
you can still boot if you've made
the 4 disk "boot up" set.

You may have to do that from another
2000 Adv. Server machine. Once you've
created the boot disks, then you can
choose repair as the options come up.
It will ask for your CD, which should
work at that time.

Hello...

I'm curious if anyone out there has managed to dual boot between Windows 7 & Server 2k8 and if there are any recommendations that can be made? I've setup systems in the past where multiple dual boots were used i.e. Windows Xp, Windows Vista & Windows 7 all on 3 seperate partitions.

With this new dual boot, I plan on using two separate drives to ensure a problem free environment. I only ask as this is the place where actual responses are useful and helpful.

BTW, I managed to run the OS's in a VM so now is the time to migrate to the real deal.

Any assistance would be appreciated

Thanks

I think some OS files got corrupt or missing, so what would be the problem and solution for it.Thanks in advance..DJ.There is GOD where there is true smile for someone...

A recently installed device driver, or software that installs a driver (Third party Firewall, Antivirus, or CD-burning application) is usually the cause if normal mode won't start but safe mode will.Start in Safe Mode and uninstall any recently installed software which fits the above description.

It's not the protocols it is Active Directory that is the issue. What is the current DNS name of the server? Most orgs name them something like domainname.local and you need to have it exactly like it is in DNS.

Look for a book called Windows 2003 Administrator's Companion.

All sorts of help, and instructions on preparing your 2000 server to participate in a 2003 Active Directory, along with conversions updates etc.

Nice and easy read, if the terminology is too much for you to read from this manual then the conversion will be too much for you alone.

I will need to run both machines on the network until I am able to move all all users and computers from the 2000 machine active directory and all data. Anyone have any links or advice for optimally accomplishing this?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I just installed windows 2003 server standard (thats the small business edition) over a 2000 pro installation thinking it would upgrade it. I was wrong, it just installed it on top and later I was informed that you cannot upgrade from 2000 professional to 2003 server. What should I do?

Tried the search but didn't come up with anything for these two. I am wondering if I'm in for any surprises. I'm gonna dual boot XP pro and 2003 ent. server with 2003 on it's own hard drive. I'm a student and get OS's for free to study and play with incase anybody is wondering.

Whoo-hoo! First post!

I have Windows Vista installed in my laptop. I have an image of Windows server 2003 saved in my external drive. What I want to do is to create a partition in my laptop hard drive and install the windows Server 2003 image in that partition.

Question is,
1. Will I get dual boot options when I start my laptop?
2. Will copying Windows Server 2003 image (containing boot record) overwrite my Windows Vista boot record, and screw up windows Vista bootup?
3. How to accomplish dual boot of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003?

A:Dual boot - Vista/Server 2003

Hi-

Is this an install image? If so, it will overwrite Vista's boot loader and render Vista unbootable. Do you have a Vista Install disk or recovery disk? as with that you could use the command prompt to correct the mbr.

Regards,

Mark

I have tried the following boot.ini and I get the choices during startup and when I choose XP Pro, it boots just fine. However when I choose Server 2003, nothing happens. Any ideas? Below is my current boot.ini configuration.

Thanks in advance!

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Server 2003" /fastdetect
Yes, the os's are on seperate Hard Drives. Is the problem with the switches?
I'm stumped on this one.

New to Win8 and this forum...

Using my Server 2008 R2 host, created a Win8 VM/VHD and it boots, works fine. I followed instructiong using BCDEdit to add the VHD to my boot options. When i reboot and select the VHD it begins to load then fails. I end up in the recovery option tools. Looking through the advanced info I believe the root problem is "failed to find osloader" or something close to that.

Most of the tutorial's have the VHD added to the Win7 boot screen, but, thats' not my scenario.

Is there something I missed in getting this working? Has anyone used a VHD created in Win Server 2008 R2 to use as a native boot VHD?

Would love to get this working.

Machine is a Lenovo T510, 8 Gig memory.

Thanks.

The process of creating and using a VHD under Server 2008 R2 is no different to the same process under Windows 7. Admittedly, I haven't tried creating a VHD for Windows 8 under the server platform, but I've created several Windows 7 VHDs under Server in the past.

The method I always use involves WAIK Creating Bootable Virtual Hard Disks and when installed simply use:

bcdboot x:\Windows - where x: is the drive you declared for the VHD

To add the VHD to the boot options.

I'll try adding a VHD to Server 2008 a little later today...

A:Dual booting Win 7 Home Premium x64 & Server 2008 R2 in 2 partitions.

Why do you want Server 2008, you`ll never use it, do you have a way to activate it ?

Just split the drive in half, a 1 TB drive is too small for 4 partitions, but you could make 3, a pair of 300 GB and the rest for storage.

Your specs are fine.

Hello everyone I have a doubt There's a single hard drive in my laptop without 2008 booting VHD Windows x64 Basic and Server Dual R2 7 Home and it contains two partitions besides the MB quot system reserved quot partition The quot C quot drive contains the OS and boot files The quot D quot partition holds personal data and backup Dual booting Windows 7 Home Basic x64 and Server 2008 R2 without VHD files Both are primary I would like to set my laptop to dual boot mode with Windows Server R as the new bootable OS I would achieve this by shrinking the quot D quot partition creating a new one e g quot E quot with the unallocated space and installing the new OS into the new partition Nevertheless I fear that installing a new OS will overwrite modify the current MBR leaving me with only the Server R boot entry So will Server R really mess with MBR or boot entries on the HD or will the boot manager still report two boot entries P S I've tried creating a VHD drive installing and booting Server R from there however that can't be accomplished because my notebook Windows edition is Home Basic x whereupon this feature isn't enabled If I try to install the desired OS to the virtual disk the setup disk manager GUI will report this error message quot Windows cannot be installed to this disk The selected disk is a surfaced virtual disk Windows cannot be installed to this disk This computer s hardware may not support booting to this disk Ensure that the disk s controller is enabled in the computer s BIOS menu quot This is the guide I've been following in order to learn how to handle with VHD drives Dual booting Windows Server R with Windows using VHD booting microsoftNOW Sorry for the long post and my English I hope you understand what I mean

A:Dual booting Windows 7 Home Basic x64 and Server 2008 R2 without VHD

When you install a later Windows version its boot environment will replace that of the existing OS.
It very well possible to install Windows 2008 R2 to VHD.

The message you receive can be ignored as Windows 2008 R2 boot manager can boot VHD's.
Moreover a dual boot will be created automatically.
The new boot environment (files) will be placed in System Reserved (and replace/amend the existing).

If you prefer shrinking d: and installing R2 on the newly created space you will have a slightly better disk performance everything else is the same for VHD or native partition install.

I have 2003 server on a dual nic PC.
there are 2 broadband connections coming into me.
nic 1 (on board broadcom adapter) has Virgin Media broadband coming in via a netgear gigabit wireless router (DSL).
nic 2 is a netgear GA311 REV A1 pci card connected to a bt hub.

dns is running on both routers.

I want my work pc's (home office) running on the virgin side of the network (which they are) and to see the server (which they can).

I want my family pc's to work on the BT side of the network (which they are) but I also want them to see the server.

The problem is, they cannot see the server even though it is connected by the second nic to this network.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Alright, so I have two hard drives in my computer; one has Windows 7 on it and the other has Windows Server 2003 on it. I no longer want to use windows server 2003, and I could use the hard drive somewhere else. What I want to know is: What is the safest way to remove that drive from the dual boot and format it without screwing up the boot record for Windows 7. I still want to have windows 7 (to clarify), I only want it on my pc and I want to completely get rid of Server 2003. So, again, what is the safest way to do this without screwing up the boot record for windows 7?

I'm having issues finding the location of en expired certificate that one of my LDAP servers responds with during an LDAPS bind attempt.

I'm using Linux's ldapsearch to perform specific tasks during user creation but recently discovered the certificate expired. I have renewed said certificate and placed it in the personal store on that ldapserver but after debugging the SSL connection it still responds with the previously expired certificate.

Can anyone tell me where this certificate would be stored on Windows Server 2003. I've found multiple post regarding the store in 2008 but that does not exist in 2003. I've searched the whole store using certutil trying to match the serial on this certificate but can't find it anywhere.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

The above config will nat 172.18.0.2 to 65.77.78.48. You can't static NAT an entire IP to the same as a global (your interface). You can only do this if you NAT specific ports.

The above config will allow internet to reach 65.77.78.48 via TCP 80/443/25. I can only assume you're using ISA for EFE server, and maybe proxy. (Not an ISA fan)

The above config allows your ISA server carte-blanche access. In essence, it's a DMZ by name only. Don't fool yourself.

Don't use conduits, they're deprecated.

Don't use a firewall to permit "any" to your ISA server, actually use it to block inbound ports.

Also, your ISA server shouldn't/can't have two NIC's in the same subnet. That's a bad idea on 10 different levels. IF you're using your ISA server (blech) as EFE / reverse proxy for OWA, and outbound proxy - you might as well keep it on the same subnet as your Exchange server (inside, I'm assuming.) Again, 10 different reasons why it's a flawed security plan.

If this is simply an EFE server or reverse proxy, make sure you don't keep the ISA server part of any AD domain, stick it in the DMZ, and restrict what hosts it's allowed to see on the network that you're trying to protect.

Regards.

How do you enter the credentials on the Windows 7 machine? I've noticed that you have to use "domain\username" rather than just the username in some cases.

Hi,

The procedure is as follows:
---------------------------------
Right-click databases -> Restore Database
I mark 'from device', click the '...' button & select 'File' in the dropdown, then brows to the file itself. Under 'select the backup sets to restore' I check the only checkbox there, then in the 'To Database' I select the name of the database in the file (a new DB name appears there as you select the file).

Then I press OK and receive the error message in the attached file.
I need to be able to complete the import.

Thanks,
Daniel.

hi guys!
I just installed Windows 2000 Advance Server recently to a Compaq Proliant ML530 server and found out that the license for this server is more expensive than Windows Server 2003 Standard. The SmartStart CD of the compaq does not support windows server 2003 and I don't want to manually re-configure everything and start all over again. Does Win2K A.S. support Windows Server 2003 upgrade?

Event ID: 1054

Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer network. (An unexpected network error occurred. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
I have done the MS Support site "recommendations", but the Server is pointing to itself for the DNS and the IP address and all that are fine. Not sure why or what is going on here. I can't seem to stop it.

A:Non Admin not able to connect OPC server in Windows Server 2003

From what I've read on this thread, you'll need to set computer-wide DCOM security permissions. You'll want to peruse that thread.

On another note, this isn't really the best spot for this question. An error message isn't a crash, hang or bsod, and the situation is more relevant to specifically the Windows Server section (even though OPC servers can and often do exist in many client versions of Windows). You'll be able to receive more help there, as it's pertinent to your needs.

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

Not sure if this is the correct forum. In the past I could use SCOPY to move users files from a File server (NT4 server) to a Windows 2000 server. From what I understand SCOPY does not work properly with 2003. Does Server 2003 have a similar utility to pring in files and retain security permissions ?

We have a Windows 7 Pro laptop that can't see any of the 300 or so Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Machines.

It can, however, see all (around 13) Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 Machines that are on the network. Using \\ServerName\Share doesn't connect, and they don't show up on the network map.

It can ping the servers though. They ping by hostname and by ip address. Other Windows 7 Pro Laptops don't have this same problem!

Additional Info:
They are all joined to the domain; servers, laptaps, etc.

At home a friend has a server w/Server 2000 and an xp pro sp2 computer that work fine together. She has a laptop w/XP Home sp2 that wont connect.

Is it a limitation of XP Home to not work with Microsoft Server 2000 ?

What effect and/or use is VNC Server software. Its on the server, does the laptop need THAT to get connected to the server? (If thats the case, could anyone point me to a crash course web site on it ?..)

Thank you all very much in advance...

dave

A:VNC Server ? // XP Home w/Server 2000 ?

Yep, XP-Home will not connect to a domain server. You can connect directly to shared folders/drives in that server, you just can't do a domain login.

VNC is a remote control package, it has nothing to do with standard Microsoft networking.

Hello all I m not sure if this is an operating system question or more of a software development question Anyway I have a legacy COM service a COM server 2003 Server execution Windows - connecting when on service DCOM "Server failed" that runs as a windows service that was written for Windows NT I have managed to use the service on both Windows and Windows XP unchanged However I now wish to run the service on a Windows Server machine and I can t seem to DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting get it to work This is what happens - Install the service and set it to log on using a domain account Start the service from the services msc applet Start the client application and connect to the service At this stagte the client applicaiton freezes for approximately seconds and DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting then returns with the error message quot Server execution failed quot I ve also tried using the client whilst the service is stopped In this case when I connect the service is started but I get the same error The development team also provided a standalone application that hosts the exact same COM objects mainly for debugging purposes If I use the standalone application everything works fine Its all very strange Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be And preferably a solution Thanks Kep nbsp

A:DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting

I found the answer.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...-DC48AB0DA5C9&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

The above discussion says that a service must enter a running state before a COM server calls CoRergisterClassObject. So I guess its a development problem.

Not sure why it only manifests on Windows Server 2003 though.

A:Windows Server 2003 as VPN server

Information for how to configure a Windows2003 VPN server can be found at:
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/w3k_vpn_server.htm

You don't need to make any changes or additions to shares in regards to VPN client's being able to access previous shares on the server. Whatever you have assigned for the LAN access can work for VPN.

Does anyone recommend a certain brand of server and a place to buy? I am thinking server 2003 running on a Proliant with a Xeon processor but I am not sure how much power I need. I will be running five database off of one server with 40 workstations local and five connecting via terminal services. will I need dual processor? I am thinking I will need at least 400 GB of hard drive space and at least 1gb of ram maybe more. What do you guys think.

A:HOW TO SECURE Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 & even VISTA, + make it "fun to do"

SECURING SERVICES (ala MacOS X style, for its daemons, via privelege levels)

===============================================================================
APK 12 STEPS TO SECURE YOUR WINDOWS NT-BASED SYSTEM (2000/XP/SERVER 2003/VISTA):
===============================================================================

1.) HARDENING & SECURING SERVICES HOW-TO (longest one of the lot but, one well worth pursuing... read on):

Many services I do not need are either cut off OR secured in their logon entity to lower privilege entities (from default, near "ALL POWERFUL" SYSTEM, to lesser ones like NETWORK SERVICE or LOCAL SERVICE).

I went at ALL of the services in Windows Server 2003 (some will not be in XP for instance, & Windows 2000 has no NETWORK SERVICE or LOCAL SERVICE as far as I know, but not sure, you can always make a limited privelege user too for this on 2000 if needed)...

(The reason I mention this, is, this "technique" IS a superiority of MORE MODERN Windows NT-based OS over their ancestors (especially NT 3.x-4.0) & on par w/ how this makes your Win32 NT-based OS' like 2000 (with more work), XP, Server 2003 (VISTA too if needed), very much like how MacOS X treats its daemon processes via privelege levels, which uses the same general principals)

It works, & although many service packs for Windows OS' have changed their services (not all but many nowadays) to less than SYSTEM, my list covers those they may not have in recent service packs AND 3rd party services are listed too that you may be running possibly!

This is for SERVICES YOU ACTUALLY NEED TO RUN (many, you really don't - this has always astounded me, & MS can put out "home versions" more this way imo, for gamers especially (auto-service "lean tuned turbocharged" for performance/speed/less resources consumption)).

ON THAT NOTE (for performance AND security)? CUTTING OFF SERVICES YOU DO NOT NEED TO RUN IS POSSIBLY THE BEST METHOD OF SECURING THEM, AND GAINING SPEED - AGAIN, SIMPLY SINCE YOU ARE NOT WASTING I/O, MEMORY, or OTHER RESOURCES ON THEM, PERIOD, in doing this!

Please, if you don't do this already? Hey - do consider it, when possible! It works like NO TOMORROW...

Many guides online exist for this, & I authored one of the first "back in the day" for NTCompatible.com as "Article #1" back in 1997/1998 - 2002 (early model is in URL below, much detail on registry hacks too for speed & security in it, cited in 2002 @ NeoWin):

http://www.neowin.net/news/main/01/11/29/apk-a-to-z-internet-speedup--security-text

The latest ones are even BETTER/MORE CURRENT, as there are ones that DO EXIST FOR VISTA ONLINE ALSO!

Anyhow - on the note of 3rd party services, & many native ones (for 2000/XP/Server 2003, but not fully on VISTA as I do not run it @ home or on the job)?

I did testing to see which services could be run/logged in as LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE, rather than the default of LOCAL SYSTEM (which means Operating System entity level privileges - which CAN be "misused" by various spyware/malware/virus exploits.

A:Windows 2003 Server installation in Dual Boot on already installed Windows 7 Laptop

Couple of things you can do after installing 2003.

Boot from the W7 dvd select repair my computer and do a startup repair, most of the time this fixes the bootloader for W7, but then 2003 may not boot now. So then you need to install a BCD editor software in W7 to get both of them booting properly.

http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1

If startup repair does not get W7 booting again, there are some commands you can do from the W7 recovery environment to get the job done, (boot from the W7 cd, select repair my computer, then command prompt)

Hi guys,

Am new to using computers. Can someone help me step by step process of how to install windows server 2003 r2 and windows 7 home premium 64 bit as a dual boot on my dell xps laptop.

thank you very much in advance..

A:dual boot of windows server 2003 r2 and windows 7 on dell xps

Should be the same as to Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

Install 2003 first. You'll know right away if it can see the HD or if it needs the SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD.

Once it's installed boot WIn7 installer to create the second partition you should leave space for during previous install. It will configure the Dual Boot menu, or else install EasyBCD to 7 to add 2003.

Try running this in vista and use it to add a boot entry for 2003.

Take a quick look here

You have three options, theres a fourth but thats install from scratch
ca/groups?hl=en&lr=&scoring=d&q=move+to+new+hardware&btnG=Search&meta=group%3Dmicrosoft.public.windows.server.sbs

1. Swing Migration - http://www.sbsmigration.com

2. forklift. Image your installation and restore it to your new hardware. Some information on this method at http://www.smallbizserver.net. Check out google groups also for some info also.

3. Theres a Microsoft tool called Active Directory Migration Tool. For this you'll need to rename your server and you domain http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=16414

Hi,

I'm new here and glad to join this community.

I have windows server 2003 and windows xp pro on my home computer. Now I really need to reinstall windows xp. I know that the sequence for installing multi windows OSes on the same computer should be from oldest OSes to lastest OSes. This means I should install windows xp and then windows server 2003. Last time, I reinstalled windows xp when windows 2003 is already installed. The result was I couldnt boot in windows server! So how can I install Windows xp without affecting my server OS? Should I install them on different hard disks (I got two hard disks)?

Any help will be appriciated.

Best regards,

A:Dual boot windows xp and windows server 2003

Back up Boot.ini file.

You could install windows Xp and then edit/replace the boot.ini file with the one you backed up.
Or once XP is installed you can run a Manulal repair off windows 2003 cd on the boot files.
