Windows desktop doesn`t show. No icons or taskbar etc.

Q: Windows desktop doesn`t show. No icons or taskbar etc.

My son gave me his Presario 700 laptop. Yesterday I turned it on and all it would do is go to the wallpaper and then nothing. I do not get any icons or start button. I was able to get on line by going to the ctrl, alt, del and getting the task window and doing a search.

I can not find the restore disk and my son is in Irag, so I can not ask him where it is. My question is, is there a way to restore by using the task window to find the file?

Thanks,
Armymom

Preferred Solution: Windows desktop doesn`t show. No icons or taskbar etc.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows desktop doesn`t show. No icons or taskbar etc.

Is this Windows XP? I guess what you could do is search for rstrui.exe, it's the system restore utility, and try that out. You can find it in C:\Windows\system32\Restore (at least on my computer.)

However, every time when I open a window ( Word, IE 6, etc, any application) the window never showed on the task bar. when i minimize it it disappear. I had to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up task manager window to maximize the application window again.

the taskbar is not locked and i tried to move the borders but nothing helped

any idea how to fix that??

I was infected with a scare-ware..I dont remember what it was called. I managed to get rid of that with spybot, but I am still experiencing some problems. For instance, when i boot up windows I dont have any desktop icons or the bar on the bottom with the start button.
Sometimes task manager doesn't work making it difficult to do anything at all. My internet cuts out entirely at times and I cant open any new connections but previously established connections remain open like ventrillo. I've used malwarebytes anti-malware, spybot search an destroy, and I also have avg installed.

A:Desktop icons and taskbar dont show up

Before much can be done about the malware removal, we need to establish how best you are able to use your computer at this stage.Windows Advanced Options MenuGetting into Windows Safe Modehttp://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htmFrom the Windows Advanced Options Menu, please try the following ...Choose "Last known good configuration that worked", and press <ENTER>. The computer will attempt to load Windows. If Windows does not start normally, try the same thing again .... and continue trying for 10 times, before you rule that option out as a means of getting your OS running normally. Why 10 times? Based on past experience, a successful result is sometimes achieved after several consecutive failed attempts. You can log in to Windows normally, but you end up looking at your desktop wallpaper/background image (not a plain blue or black screen?), but without icons/taskbar/start button. Is this correct? You implied that task manager works only sometimes (and I am guessing that you have been using Ctrl+Alt+Del): Does Ctrl+Shift+Esc bring up the Task Manger window reliably? Please try the following ...On the Applications tab of the Task Manager window, click on "New Task", and in the "Run" dialog box that opens type "explorer.exe" and press <ENTER>.Does a Windows Explorer window open, and can you use it to browse all the files on your computer?OR ... do you see a message? What happens when you attempt to start the system in Safe Mode? Are you offered the choice of logging in to either the Administrator account or your own account? If you log into your own account can you then open Task Manager using Ctrl+Shift+Esc ?Please try starting the system in Safe Mode, and logging into the Administator account and let me know if there is any difference. What happens when you attempt to start the system in "Safe Mode with networking"?On the Applications tab of the Task Manager window, click on "New Task", and in the "Run" dialog box that opens type "iexplore.exe" and press <ENTER>.Does a Windows Internet Explorer window open, and can you use it to browse the net on-line? Do you have internet access then?OR ... do you see a message? After doing all of the above work, please re-start your system. Does your system start normally ... or is it still without icons/taskbar/start button?

Hi, I have a kiosk PC that is looking pretty good however I have two outstanding issues.

The users can still right click on applications on the taskbar and receive a context menu even though I've disabled the context menu in the group policy editor.
User Configuration/Administrative Templates/Start Menu and Taskbar/Remove access to the context menus for the taskbar - Enabled

And I can't figure out how to remove the "show desktop" icon in the systems notification tray.

Thanks in advance for any help
Megan Armstrong.

A:Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hello Megan,

Hope you're doing fine.

Disabling context menu from application on the taskbar
Please note the task bar context menu for any application for windows 7 is sub-divided into two sections :

   a. Jumplist(to access recently opened files)
   b. Creating a new instance of the application, Pin/Unpin, Close window

We can only disable the Jump List of the Taskbar context menu but not the "new instance creation, Pin/Unpin, close window"

Please follow the steps below to disable jump list:
1. Right-click on the Taskbar and then select Properties.
2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".
3. Click OK.

Disabling Show Desktop from the system tray
Regarding the requirement of disabling the "Show Desktop" button alltogether from the System tray, this is by design.

There are no ways to remove it. All we can do is to disable aero peek at Taskbar properties by right clicking and uncheck the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".
There's a third party software which addresses this sopecific purpose but I'm not pretty sure if this works perfectly for Windows 7 SP1 as well. Please refer to the link below.

Hello,
After I returned from holidays I turned on my PC just to find out I couldn't see any icons and the task bar didn't show up either. Every time I ctrl + alt + del a black screen shows up (when I click ESC it goes back to the desktop).

I already tried to format the computer, only to have the same problem happen over and over again. I don't know what to do anymore :/ help!

A:Desktop without icons, task bar doesn't show up

Hello, and Welcome

You have formatted the computer, installed Windows 7, and you still get the blank screen with no icons, correct?

I would first download Seatools for DOS and do a disk diagnostic. You will need to burn the iso file by Right clicking the file in Windows 7 and select Burn Image. You may have to change AHCI mode to IDE in BIOS if Seatools does not detect your drive. After the test, set the mode back to AHCI.

If the drive passes I would then do a Memory test using memtest86+. You will need to burn the iso also. Let it run for at least 6 passes and preferably overnight.

Please check the Action Center in Control Panel for issues with the system.

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .NFO file, zip it up and upload/attach the .zip file to your next post.

Okay when I turn my computer on, it goes through all of the normal stuff, but then it automatically logs on to my main account (which I use, but it's password protected and everything) and all of my scanners did not find any problems.

Also, the volume control icon does not show on the taskbar anymore. It comes back after going into control panel > sounds, speech, and audio devices > sounds and audio devices > uncheck "place volume icon in the taskbar" + click apply > recheck "place volume icon in the taskbar" + click apply

When I go to taskbar properties, the audio icon has "always show"

Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Automatic Logon to Windows Account / Sound icon on taskbar doesn't show

try deleting the need for a password and immediately reenable it and set a new one. You should NOT automatically bring up the desktop if the password is set.

Taskbar > Show Hidden Icons > Customize > there are some items there by description only (no actual icon next to it) that are from programs that were uninstalled. The drop down for show/hide etc is there for these items. After choosing Hide/No notifications and restarting, these items for uninstalled softwares are still there.

How do I permanently remove items in the Notification Area-customize box for these uninstalled softwares?

Have you tried this?

How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature
To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, follow these steps: 1. Start your computer.
2. When you see the "Please select the operating system to start" message, press the F8 key.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press ENTER.
4. If you are running other operating systems on your computer, use the ARROW keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press ENTER.

Or try this.
If you can open taskmanager ctrl+alt+delete

start up the Windows XP Task Manager and select the Applications tab.

Now select the New Task button at the bottom of the window. A new smaller window will appear. In it simply type:

explorer.exe

explorer.exe is the Windows Program Manager (or Windows Explorer.) It manages the Windows Graphical Shell including the Start menu, taskbar, desktop, and File Manager. By restarting this process the graphical interface for Windows will reappear.

New Task and type explorer.exe but this does not work for me and says it cannot find explorer.exe! So I copied another explorer.exe on a flashdrive and tried to run that. Same problem. Will run other programs such as Notepad. Anyone know what's up? Thanks. Bryan

Ok let me explain further,

Whenever i install a new program or download something to the desktop. Basically when anything new is installed or placed on the desktop, it doesnt show. I have to right click then refresh then all the newly installed/downloaded programs/icons show.

Never had this issue, im guessing something to do with the SSD?

Is there a way around this as its frustrating.

Thanks

Hello,

I am having the problem of windows booting to NO taskbar or desktop icons, I have run malware bytes and Avast5 and there os no reported problems.

Sadly I have run combofix before I saw all the warnings NOT to do that....WHY?

I have the log report is anyone willing to explain why one should not run combofix?

Any assistance would greatly be appreciated!!

A:Windows boots to NO taskbar or desktop icons

Hello,is anyone willing to explain why one should not run combofix?Sure. To quote Papakid:Running ComboFix by yourself is like performing open heart surgery on yourself--the scalpel and other surgical tools that is ComboFix is meant to be wielded by a highly trained surgeon only in emergencies or dire circumstances. When the surgeon is thru s/he leaves the room. So combofix should be removed from a system once it has accomplished its job, unlike an AV that is there to protect you from future infections.. . . CF does make some alterations to your system if you run it. Even if you had no malware removed and run the uninstall command, some things may be different now on your system. I can tell you that one thing is that all your restore points will be flushed out and a new one created. There is a good reason to do that when you have a severe infection--but if you aren't infected you might need those restore points. That said, please follow the instructions in ==>This Guide<== starting at step 6.Once the proper logs are created, then make a NEW TOPIC and post it ==>HERE<== Since you have run ComboFix, please include the ComboFix log in the new topic. Please be sure to include a description of your computer issues and what you have done to try to resolve them.If you cannot produce any of the other logs, then please create the new topic anyway, include the information that you were unable to produce the other logs and why and include the ComboFix log along with a description of your computer issues.Orange Blossom

Hi,

I am facing this problem with my laptop. It seems it has something to do with the Winfixer problem.

I am unable to see any of my desktop icons or the taskbar. Neither can I right click on my desktop. It has totally deactivated. I am using my laptop through the task manager-->New Task option. Please help as I have tried to work on it and have finally given up.

A:Desktop icons and taskbar disappeared [MOVED FROM WINDOWS]

A temporary solution may be task manager, new task, then type "explorer".
That should bring up the familiar windows explorer so you can don't have to use task manager all the time. As for why this has happened, not sure, will look up your particular problem.

As you have tried many things that i would suggest, i am wondering if the disk you are using to install the updates is corrupt?

Have you to tried to use another disk?

I can provide you with the links if needed.

Brand and model of the PC?

Did you reinstall using a Windows disc or a recovery partition on the hard drive?

Is it possible to set this via the registry?

Does anybody know the key for this?

A:Always show all icons on the taskbar box

Click on the arrow in the system tray and then choose Customize... A new window will open, and you just need to check the option "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar". Click OK and you're done.

My taskbar icons next to my clock will not show up anymore! I am on my notebook, and I want the sound and battery icons to show up there, but they won't anymore. I enable them, disable them, apply, restart, it doesn't matter, they won't come back. The only icons that show now are messenger, my touchpad icon, and daemon-tools. I noticed it happened after i went to task manager and closed all the processe opened by my user name in order to try to get a game to start (thats what the tech guy told me to do) Now, now mater what I do, I can't get my icons back. Thanks in advance

Sounds like some info may be missing from your registry. If you have Windows XP do you have a restore point you can revert to from a time before the problem had occurred?

Hi,
I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6400 with Windows XP Home on it.
My problem is as such:
When ever I close an explorer window, the taskbar and desktop icons disappear for a few seconds...Its quite annoying, and it also closes any other Windows I have open.
Programs don't seem to be affected...

Has anyone come across this problem? And are there any solutions?
Much thanks for any help rendered.

(Note: I don't know whether this problem involves malware or not, so I made the exact same thread in the Hijack This Forum also)

My computer uses Windows XP with McAfee Security Center.

When I turned my computer on yesterday the loading process stopped before it would run after it got to my background. Thus, the CPU stops as if everything is done loading and the startup process has finished, but my taskbar and desktop icons don't appear. Windows Task Manager is the only thing that I can get to appear.

Through Windows Task Manager I can perform tasks with CTRL-ALT-DEL, so I am able to access the internet and Hijack This. System Restore hasn't worked to fix the problem either, as I've done it 3 times and it hasn't helped. I think I have the same problem as this guy:

I WOULD LIKE TO CLOSE THIS THREAD.

Turns out my BIOS didn't "see" any of my hard drives.  I reflashed it and it appeared ok, then booting up to Windows caused the same thing to happen (no icons, etc)... plus my BIOS didn't detect my drives again!  I ran TDSSKiller and it found/cured three problems... that cleared up my PC issues.  I would delete this thread but I don't think I can.  Thanks anyway!

I think I have some sort of virus or malware which keeps on messing up my taskbar, start bar , icons where time is and sometimes my desktop.

It doesnt happen all the time but when it does it wont allow me to click on anything this includes the start bar/taskbar/desktop. The minimized internet pages on the taskbar all merge into each other and I cannot click to maximize them because the taskbar has muddled up.

I have to press "ctrl alt delete" buttons and log off and sign back in and then it seem's everything is fine until it happens again.

I have downloaded SuperAntiSpyware , Avast & Malwarebytes ...but nothing is detected . I even ran the CD's to get it back to factory settings because I was so annoyed.

Please could you help

i tried to boot off of an xp home disk and i got the blue screen of death. it says that the bios in this system is not fully acpi complient. it also gives me tech info:

im not really sure what happened to my laptop. But I tried turning it on earlier & it just wouldnt start up. Wouldnt even shut off. I had to take the battery out to get it to shut off. Said it couldnt start up. Then it would suddenly start beeping real loud...continuously. I freaked out.
Well I dont know what I did, but it finally started. But now my volume icon and my network icon are no longer in my taskbar, and when I right click on the taskbar, and go to properties...the place where I can check the volume & network to show up in the taskbar, are greyed out so I cant chek them.
Why would that be? How else can I get the volume and network icons back to my taskbar?
This is so frustrating

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: http://www.carrona.org/malware.html (read the details at the link)

Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:

FurMark download site: http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit

Prime95 download site: http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft/
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.

Hi, when I turn off my avast antivirus, the white flag on the taskbar doesn't change to the one with the red cross on it, like it used to some time ago. When I hover the pointer over it it pops up a "solve pc issues" message, and when I click on it, it says "turn on avast antivirus". So how do I get the red X flag back?

A:Action Center flag on taskbar doesn't show red x

Go to Action Center in Control panel>(Left side)Change Action Center settings click on that and you should be able to choose which security messages will be displayed;tick Spyware and related protection and Virus protection.

When right-clicked my Windows Explorer icon in the taskbar only displays "Desktop" under "Recent". I use it to open lots of things, how come I never see them listed under "Recent". I guess these are called Jump Lists. They also don't display at all for Microsoft Word. There are some there for IE but they don't seem like my most recent visits. Are my jump lists messed up? After running Ad-aware, a trojan file was detected that couldn't be quarantined, cleaned or deleted. Husband found a way to get it deleted, but there was a warning saying that it was associated with another file. Deleted anyway.

Ran McAfee VirusScan and deleted unwanted programs it detected. After that, the mouse wouldn't work, so shut computer down by holding button in until shutdown (only way it could be shut down).

Start up went normal until the desktop background came up. Message stating "C: couldn't be found, check address again(???)" popped up. I clicked OK then it just sat there. I shut it off again.

Start up went normal again up through desktop background. No message this time. Mouse seems to work, but no icons or start up blue bar.

The only thing we can think of is the deleted file was associated with our desktop icons.

Thank you for your help.

Back up all of your data and reinstall from scratch. Your laptop probably has a recovery partition, so research on line how to do a full factory restore (different manufacturers have different ways to do this)

Run System Restore and restore back to an available restore date that is PRIOR to running the remove utility. That should get you back to where you were originally.

Click the start "orb" and then enter System Restore in the search box and then press enter. System Restore should come up. If not, it can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. System Restore will not delete any user data or e-mails.

I'd like it on the left next to the start button.
I know how to enable the quick launch bar and this includes it but the icons are really small and i don really need anything else over there.
I have the short cut that was posted on this forum and was wondering if there is a way of pinning it to the taskbar on its own.

Thanks for any help.

Dave.

A:How to add the show desktop shortcut to the taskbar

Hello Dave,

The taskbar already has the Show Desktop feature built into it if you wanted to use that option instead.

Unfortunately, that shortcut can only be pinned inside the pinned Windows Explorer taskbar icon, or in the Start Menu pin area.

Hope this helps,

What makes dim desktop.ini icons show up on the Windows 7 pro desktop of my Dell laptop?

Is there a use for them?

A:What makes dim desktop.ini icons show up on my desktop?

It's caused by showing hidden files. Those two files are there because the underlying folders that make up the desktop hold those pesky hidden files.
What they do is to control a few display options for Windows Explorer (all per-folder customization is stored in them). If memory serves, for the particular case of the desktop folders they only control the display folder name (so that they localize the real name "desktop") and maybe show a different icon.
Generally, all desktop.ini files can be safely considered useless and deleted without any consequenses.

There are some old threads on this subject which are useful icon in taskbar Show Desktop left on but Show Desktop icon on left in taskbar have become dated so following instructions I have decided to open a new thread The Show Desktop button in W is over on the right and I wanted to move it to the left but that appears to be impossible Now I know the W-d keyboard shortcut achieves the same goal but I would also like to have a clickable icon in the taskbar on the left Here's what I did In XP I created a shortcut to Show Desktop and placed it on my desktop Then I quot pinned quot it to the taskbar and it worked just fine So in W I copied the XP shortcut to my desktop where it still works just fine However when I pin it to the taskbar W creates a link to Windows Explorer which is NOT what I want In Properties this shortcut is described as quot Windows Explorer Command scf quot So if anyone out there has a way to create a Show Desktop button on the left of the taskbar I would greatly appreciate hearing from you Surely there must be a file or command buried somewhere in the system that performs this task I have looked but haven't found a thing that is useful

I started having problems after a reboot..my desktop icons fail to show up and I have to reboot again and again..I looked into task manager and it does show explorer.exe running...a few times I noticed in the task manager that only 15 processes were running..mainly 8 svchost.exe files

Any ideas as to why this is happening?

A:Desktop Icons...No show

I am confused, what do you mean you have to reboot again and again? Do you mean that only sometimes your desktop icons show up?If you access your Desktop through Windows Explorer, are the items still there?A possibility is that Show Desktop Icons feature is turned off. So you can re enable them but they are gone every time you restart, is that what you are saying or has this only happened once, has it ever remembered the desktop or has it just started to happen?

I have arranged my desktop with an icon "dock" at the bottom of the screen, showing large icons with the text removed. However, 2out of 10 icons are showing a border. This only shows when the icons are displayed as large or custom size. Is there any way to get rid of this annoying border? I'm almost certain it's not a registry or icon property as it only affects 2 icons. Possibly could it be something to do with the particular .ico files?

Anyways, due to the way I like my desktop to look I need at least custom sized icons, and this border is really irritating...I need rid of it.

Please any help appreciated.

TIA
Andrew

A:Some desktop icons show a border...how do I get rid of it?

I am having the same problem. In fact icons that once displed fine (like my wow icon) now are smaller and have a border around it now. I think there is a way to rebuild the icon cache or something like that but not sure how right off hand and not even sure if it would solve the problem.

This little script will let you add a short cut to the quick launch to show or hide your desktop icons.
Put it in a tools folder and leave it there, right click on the exe and pin it to quick launch.Once there you can right click and go to properties and change the icon from the standard to any you have.

Hi All,

My machine has just been formatted and is running on Windows 2000 Pro.
The last thing that I did was install CDRWIN and rebooted gracefully.
When the OS restarted, all I see is my wallpaper and no icons. What can I do to troubleshoot this issue? Any ideas are much appreciated.
Also, how can I launch Add/Remove Programs from the Task Manager|New Task, what's the exe? I'd like to try and remove CDRWIN to see if that helps.

Beans

A:Desktop icons no longer show

do a ctrl+alt+del and go to the processes tab. click on the bar that says IMAGE NAME. this will put them in reverse alphabetical order. see if there is EXPLORER.EXE. if there isn't this is the reason you don't have any icons. then do a search for that and start it

A:How to show only desktop icons as icon

Hello Suriname,

The desktop and Windows Explorer share the same thumbnail preview settings. If you turn it off, it affects both locations.

A workaround would be to have image files or folders as shortcuts on the desktop instead, and change their icon to one you want.

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-FS570 laptop, and when I turned it on yesterday, it booted up to my desktop and I could move the cursor around the screen, but none of my icons or the taskbar showed up. Ctrl-alt-delete didn't work, so I booted it in safe mode and ran chkdsk. It found one problem with .lnk file and fixed it, but the problem remained the same. I was able to open the task manager in safe mode, and I noticed that services.exe was using 99% of the CPU most of the time.

I have symantec antivirus software installed, I run Malwarebytes and regcure at least once a week and left them fix any problems. I am running Windows XP home with service pack 3 installed.

Can anyone help me?

A:Desktop doesn't show; services.exe using 99% CPU

Regcure may be the cause of it all. It's a myth, crapware and will never do anything useful for anyone, ever. As an aside, advocates that use it need to be directly confronted as often as possible due to the fact that their ignorance causes similarly uninformed people to use it and have serious problems. It SHOULD be classified as malware, not so much because of what it does, or what it claims to do, but due to the fact that so many ignorant people use it and then have problems.

Continue to run chkdsk in order to find out if the HD is consistantly good, or is giving regular errors as an early-warning sign of pending failure.

Have you used the Safe Mode menu to boot to "Use Last Known Good Configuration" ?

What happens when you use Task Manager to kill the process using 99% of the CPU ?

You should not have both Symantec and Anit-Malwarebytes. AV software frequently conflict and cause probems. Further, the effect of doubling your AV scanners does not double your protection. If it increases it at all, that increase is marginal. However, it DOES double the load on your computer resources, and slows your machine down. Uninstall one or the other.

If possible, running a System Restore may fix the whole problem. It's possible a Windows Update failed and an SR will send the machine back to when it worked.

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Thank you for your patience. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. I am always leery of opening attachments so I always request that HijackThis logs are to be posted as a reply to the thread. I do not think that you are attaching anything scary but others may do so. While we are working on your HijackThis log, please: Reply to this thread; do not start another! Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so. Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so! Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work. Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix. Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix. Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.Thanks.

Try restarting the computer again. If the taskbar does not appear when you restart then you may have something interrupting the login process. If the taskbar comes up but the Internet does not work it may need to be repaired. System Restore has not been helpful to me either in instances like this.

BTW, is SBC Yahoo anti-virus software?

All i can see is my desktop background.

Things I have tried:
system restore
repair install windows xp
download some tweaks from kellys corner
virus scan
SFC /scannow

I really am clueless as to what to do, and if it came to a format how would I get my important files onto cd? or how do i get into 'my computer'?

Thanking in advance,
