pointing XP to a local machine for updates

Q: pointing XP to a local machine for updates

I run a small stand-alone network that has no connectivity to the internet. I currently download Microsoft updates and antivirus dats from an internet connected pc, burn them to a cd then copy them to one of the computers on the stand-alone network. I then "pull" the updates manually from each machine on the stand-alone network.

Is there a way to configure these XP boxes to look to a certain local location for updates?

Any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: pointing XP to a local machine for updates

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I think the "Automatic Updates" feature that's part of the OS is configured to only connect to Microsoft servers; I can't see there being a way to change this.

Folks - At my new job we are running about 16 PC's on a network and app.'s like outlook and some specific chapter 13 software..My question is.......if I sit down to a PC login as admin and start MS updates, then cannot make it make to the PC to complete them, can the user of that PC just login as them with their password and continue working normally, or can't they just cold reboot the PC then login and every thing's fine??? It is my understanding that if they return to their PC and see that an admin was logged in, they just needed to change it to their user name and password and everything's fine...?? YES or NO ???

I'd appreciate some help Ever since the Big Windows update nearly two weeks ago the automatic updates history shows that Windows is updating and installing the ALPS pointing device driver once a day nearly every single day Obviously this is a bug I ALPS & pointing device updates installs Windows10 day driver every don't get any message telling me that the update failed however It just seems to Windows10 updates & installs ALPS pointing device driver every day mindlessly repeat the operation every day for no good reason I've searched various help forums and it would seem that it's impossible to disable automatic updates for any single or specific driver because Windows knows best I understand that I can simply disable the device and its updates but I don't want to do that even though I rarely use the touchpad I have the touchpad disabled when a USB mouse is plugged in Also I should point out that this is not interfering with my laptop's performance per se as far as I can tell It's just annoying to know that this is happening every day and is a needless bit of activity Thanks for any help you can give me

I recently removed AntiVirus XP 2009 from my machine, a Dell Dimension 3000 with Windows XP. The next day, the internet was down and I went to restart my machine and when it came back up, it went to a blue screen with the words The image GDI32.DLL is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum. I did a search online and came up with a resolution and got into Windows Recovery Console and fixed the issue. Now though, I start the machine up and it goes to a different logon screen then I had and when I type in my password for any of the users on the machine it says Bret1 domain not available. My machine is not part of any domain(Bret1 is the computer name). Help. Thank you.

Hi all,

I will cut straigh to the point! I am wondering if it's possible to set up a VPN to connect to a PC on another network so i can access the other machines on that network. e.g If I have an office with a router and 1 pc connected to the internet and 4 more machines conected to the router but not going out to the internet. Is it possible to connect to that machine via VPN so then it would be as if you were on that network to then be able to access the PC's on the network?

If you need any additional information please don't hesitate to ask!

A:VPN to access a local machine

Josh, welcome to the windows 7 forums.

One option which I use is a free vpn called Hamachi. It is owned by the logmein people but it does have a free version. It is encrypted and allows you to access the other machine using either Remote Desktop Program or another of the free programs like VNC. There is also the free version of Logmein.

search on hamachi and you should be able to see what it does. They do have a pay version but there is a free version.

A:Local Machine Administrators Password?

The only legal way to do this is to re-install the OS. You do not need to be the local admin to join a computer or change the domain the computer is on. You just need to be an admin for the domain.
Is there a reason why the users log into the local machine? It kinda makes it pointless to have a domain.

Did it ever worked that way?

Why running a VM in a VM? I believe it's a test.
You'll lose considerable performance that way and there's more chance for the machine to crash.

Running Hyper-V in a Windows host is the only way to get best results.

Try upgrading or running from Parallells build 9.0.24217 or otherwise run Hyper-V from bootcamp install.

I cannot install a new program because I get an error message "not logged onto local machine" in the program setup. I have an administrator account so I don't know what's wrong. Any idea? Thanks!

A:Log onto local machine in Windows Vista

Have you tried right clicking the install.exe file and "run as Adminstrator" An irritating security feature of Vista. Although you are a user/Administrator, (I'm assuming that is the status you have?), you are not a power Adminstrator.
You do not say which Vista version you are using, but you can, in the advanced versions, also create a Power user account, as you may have been more used to in XP.
Go to Start/All Programs and right click the command prompt.
Type Control UserPasswords2.
Click Advanced.
Click Advanced again.
Select Users.
Select Administrator and untick the the box “Administrator is disabled”
Now log out and login as Administrator.

I had a nasty trojan in my system (it ran it's own proxy server), and killed it with Malwarebytes. It seems to have also have disabled the ability to execute entries in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" As a temporary measure I have moved the entries to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to get them to execute again. I would like to restore the ablity of the system to boot these start up entries from the default location. Any ideas as to how this might have happened and how to reverse it? I already tried creating a new version of the key By exporting the entries and deleting the key and merging the .reg file after checking it for any surprises just in case it was in the key itself. I also replaced winlogon.exe to be safe. This is a good one and I am out of ideas.

How do you export from HKey Local Machine? OR How do you get to view the Registry? Please help! I have to update the current version for XP Pro

But I do not recommend that you get into messing with the registry unless you know what your doing. One little change can really screw a machine up.

Greetings all-

As all of you know by now SP2 makes your computer 'safer' from the outside world.

Well it also doesn't allow some of our bussiness apps to run correctly. We currently utilize Primavera's Expedition 9.1 (totally web based). We are running into problems with the use of ActiveX within Expedition. The program requires ActiveX to print and as we all know by now, SP2 basically disables AcitveX.

I was wondering if you all had any work arounds to getting ActiveX running within our browsers again that does not include shutting down the LMLZ. Perhaps excluding our Expedition site? One thing of note, the Expedition site is part of our local intranet.

Any suggestions or help you all can bring is most appreciative.

Have you tried allowing it in via the IE Information Bar?

Is it safe to delete such entries ( register backup made first of course)?

A:hkey-local-machine entry removal

If you've uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security Suite and have restarted the computer and don't have ANYTHING else installed that's Kaspersky-related, do the following:

1. Go to the C:\Program Files folder.

If the Kaspersky folder still exists, delete it.

2. Do a search for Kaspersky.

Select and delete all files that are associated with it.

3. Restart the computer.

Doing this is a lot safer than poking around in the registry and accidentally deleting crucial registry keys.

Windows 7 group policy

I've read a lot of post on this topic but haven't been able to find a clear answer to this question.

Is it possible to create different policies on a local machine and somehow assign these policies to the groups logging in on this machine ? Seems to me that changing the group ploicy affects all users.

The machine is not on a network. It is a computer for test purposes in the field not having a domain server to handle the group policies.

Gpedit does change group policies, and all users in that group are affected. I am a little confused as to what you want to do to the users.

I would to uninstall the ASP.NET Machine Account from the Local Account as it is causing me problems of deleting an anti-virus App. that I don't need or want as I already have an anti-virus App. that is already paid for. The question is would it be safe to uninstall it as on my old Windows XP there was no ASP.NET Machine Account in the Users Local Account. When I tried to delete or uninstall the App. I received the message that I needed the Administrators permission to delete. I am the Administrator so the ASP.NET Machine Account must be the other as it is password protected. I have a HP p6-2378 with Windows 8 64 bit.

A:I want uninstall the ASP.NET Machine Account from Local Acco...

I understand you want to remove the ASP .NET account.

This account is needed for some system functions, so I don't know that removing it would be the best option.  User account in Vista and up work a little differently than they did in XP.  To help control malware, the top level administrator account is disabled by default with a second level, with less privileges, gets the Administrator label for users to use.  Some programs, especially older programs, depend on this top level admin account that is disabled.

What is anti-virus are you trying to uninstall?  There may be a removal tool that is necessary to properly remove the program.

I would recommend trying to uninstall the app through the system admin account and then disabling the admin account once you are done.  This guide details how to enable and disable this account.  You could try launching the uninstaller with admin rights (right-click>run as administrator).

Let me know what happens.

I have only a basic understanding of networking and I am trying to rectify this by setting up a small network at home to play with. I have created a VM using VMware Player and installed a Red Hat image. Using putty, installed on my local Windows 7 OS, I am able to SSH to this VM. However, I am unable to putty to the Windows machine, instead getting a "Network error: Software caused connection abort" error. I saw a thread suggesting I set "Seconds between keepalives" to 5 seconds (default was 0 - i.e. off), but this had no effect.

Any thoughts on what I am missing? Probably something simple as I so new to this.

I run from KJFK to KEWR I see a FPS improvement and this is saying a lot since around NYC I have a lot of heavy hitting FPS addons All of my heavy duty payware aircraft Aerosoft F PMDG MD CS MD VRS FA E run without a problem except one After updating the drivers Looking for ideas to try, graphic corruption, local machine issue? my ES v CX gets graphic corruption in the VC Below are two screenshots the top is with the corruption and the bottom is without The plane loads fine the corruption shows up only after I Looking for ideas to try, graphic corruption, local machine issue? toogle through all the views from the VC and when I get back to the VC I have this corruption The corruption can take up to minutes into a flight before it shows up It usually shows up when I am taxiing to a runway for takeoff Before I get the corruption I can toggle through the views times or more sometimes only two or three I fly in windowed mode all the time once I get the corruption I can toggle from windowed mode to full screen and the corruption is gone I can then toggle back to windowed mode and the corruption is still gone and will not come back for to minutes I can then clear it up by toggling into full screen go back to windowed and it is still gone Since this did not happen until I went to the drivers it would be logical that it has something to do with the drivers but all other aircraft and FSX in general have no problems with the drivers all problems are only with the ES v CX This is a quote from the developer's support site and this is the only answer they will supply no further support will be given for this issue quot This thread addresses the few who have a Graphics Card Driver Issue along with a possible Trusted dll Issue Both cases are Local Machine Settings Issues which we cannot address from afar We do suggest that you have a look at rolling back to previous video drivers and or and experiment a bit with drivers to solve what we know is local machine related quot I have uninstalled reinstalled the drivers no change I have uninstalled reinstalled the ES v CX no change Before I reinstalled the ES v CX I cleaned the registry with CCleaner and Glarysoft RR Does anyone have any idea what ES means by quot Both cases are Local Machine Settings Issues quot If anyone knows what they are talking about is there anything that I can try besides going back to the drivers and reverting back does not mean I will get rid of this issue If something has chanced in the local machine settings in the registry reverting back to the old drivers will not necessarily mean the registry problem will get fixed Does anyone know what they mean by quot Trusted dll Issue quot There was not a problem with the EX v CX dll's with the drivers so why would dll's be a problem with the drivers FMS in VC corrupted http img imageshack us img cx fms jpg FMS in VC not corrupted http img imageshack us img cx fms jpg

Hi Masterscuba, welcome to sevenforums. Try setting up fixed ip settings in both your router(which probably has DHCP set) and the other machines. This could be caused by the DHCP server trying to "issue" ip addresses taht are already fixed in 1 machine(probably number 4)

Make sure you have the latest correct networking driver. If it is an integrated adapter get the driver from the PC (or motherboard) manufacturer's web site. If that driver is already installed reinstall it anyhow in case the installed instance is corrupted.

Hello, Are you running your application on x64 or x86 version of Windows? Also are you the developer that wrote the code for OCR.Form1 class? If so, I would suggest changing the Platform Target build option for your application to target x86 rather than Any CPU. Currently it appears that you are loading some assemblies out of the x64 GAC which would indicate that you are running x64 windows and Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 provider is not 64-bit compatible. To resolve this issue open the project in Visual Studio then: 1. From the solution explorer right-click your project then click Properties2. Click the Build tab3. Change Platform target from: Any CPU to x864. Re-build your solution

A:Override domain group policy for screensaver timeout and set it on local machine to 20 minutes or more

We cannot override domain policy via local policy, processing of multiple domain-linked GPOs is in the order specified by the administrator, on the Linked Group Policy Objects tab for the domain in GPMC. The GPO with the lowest link order is processed last,
and therefore has the highest precedence.Alex Zhao

If I have three computers on local network and only one has internet access will this update all machines on local network?

A:Updates on Local Network

Yeah - this is a great option. It does not entirely stop getting stuff from internet as it is basically a torrent system, but is much faster and much reduces download demand

A torrent system basically extacts bits of a file from multiple sources, so each serving pc does not have to upload whole file (uploading usually being slower than downloading), and receiving pc glues it all together again. So you might get 5 pcs uploading a fifth each of the file at the same time, and pc can download all five parts simultaneously as download is usually several times faster than upload. It actually works in much smaller increments, but the principle is the same.

I always update my fast pc first, leaving my other slower devices switched off. Then I turn on other devices, and you see the hdd flicking away as it serves the updates to the other devices.

Do not enable last option as it will 'steal' bandwidth from you.

Recently added like 20 official updates for Windows 7, some C+++ visual ones, some security based ones, one for my 570 gtx card. My computer starts up slower after I login now, and my card has higher temps at idle. What the heck? Here's my system:

Geforce GTX 570
Asus P8P67 Pro
8GB Mushkin Blackline DDR3
750W PSU Corsair HX
i5-2500k Intel 3.30 GHZ

A:These new updates are terrible on my machine.

You can go to Programs and Features in Control Panel and uninstall any recently installed updates if they're in the list. If you can't, I would try replacing the graphics card driver with the one originally from the manufacturer. After doing so, see if Windows Update detects another driver for the graphics card. If so, you will want to hide that permanently.

Win 7 Hm Prem 64 - 2010 Home-Student Office via purchased Key/Dnload ........

I'm new to 2010 Office and Win 7 (from XP) and want to confirm that a number of 32-Bit office 2010 Updates I just watch install are NOT a Glitch, but rather OK for this Win 7 (64) machine. I'm use to having '03 Office and getting '07 Updates from installing '07 Office readers, and that's my only SWAG guess as why this may occur.

Many Thanks!

A:32-Bit Office Updates OK on 64 Machine?

Yes, 32 bit Office is fine on a 64-bit machine. The only compatibility issue is with Office 64 (and not with Office 32): if you have an Office application with VBA code that gets compiled on a 64-bit system that code will not run on a 32-bit system.

But the reverse is OK - the same application compiled on a 32-bit system will run on both 32 and 64 bit systems.

I now local to point Any Windows way Updates to directory? a have W PCs and a few XPs I want to update and want a couple more but updating amp keeping them that way with my limited-bandwidth speed ISP is a real challenge I've tried to utilize the MS Update Catalog so that I only have to download individual updates Once and I recently found Brink's excellent tutorial on getting a download directly from the WU dialog but still this is such a chore I assume that professionals make updating easier by using MS Update Catalog and Windows Server Update Services WSUS but I don't run Windows Server and don't want to buy Server and build another computer Any way to point Windows Updates to a local directory? just for this task Can anyone suggest a method to update a PC from a local directory still using the WU dialog As it is I have to look at the updates WU is requesting then open my download directory of update files find or download afresh the right one s and then execute them one-by-one rebooting the PC sometimes blah blah it's painful as heck Checking all the updates you want and letting WU take-over is so much easier except that I can't afford either the time OR the bandwidth to do these downloads for each every computer I own Is there another way

A:Any way to point Windows Updates to a local directory?

Unfortunately, this is much easier said than done. It is possible, and I have written a few program scraps to prove viability, and early results are good for this being possible (very simply, ask Windows Update to perform a search for updates, but download only (this is very easy to do), scrape the SoftwareDistribution folder, and implant onto another computer (and before you try, you CANNOT just drop in this folder - it requires using parts of the contents etc. etc.))

So it does appear to be possible for a program (but not a human unless you have a very good knowledge of the SoftwareDistribution folder)

However, demand for such a program is not great, and I have only a limited amount of time to program. I literally have 27 programs for Windows Update bits and bobs which I want to make. Sadly I do not have the time for all of these, or this one. (Currently I am making an automated fixing tool for the 0x800B0100 error code, and a tool to automate certain procedures in the registry which are too complicated (and dangerous) for an average poster to perform)

The only thing you can use to simplify downloading is WSUS Offline: WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection

However, you will need to invest in all of the updates, so watch your downloading total.

I am really sorry that I could not be of more help, but unfortunately, this program is not going to be made

I've had this happen on a couple machines and a couple printers. A local printer is installed and working correctly. After installing some windows updates, all of a sudden the local printer won't print.

On one computer, the print queue shows the print job in the queue, spools and then prints successfully, but never actually physically prints.

On another computer, the print jobs that originally sent to the local printer, get re-directed to some other network printer.

I've already uninstalled and re-installed the printer with the latest drivers.

I tried the wuagent download and force, nothing.

I ran malwarebytes and it did not find anything. Can't run defender because it wont download the updates.

I tried starting the service as it appears on another vista machine (system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) but that does not do anything.

Any suggestions?

Stop the Windows Update Service (wuauserv).

However, this week, my Win Professional machine suddenly got stuck on Checking for Updates in another endless loop. I tried the above fix again, no luck.

Any advise would be appreciated..

I have a single Windows 7 machine on our domain, that is unable to have its Windows Update settings modified, even when I log in as the Domain Administrator on the machine.  It's set to never check:

There is no such group policy on the domain to prevent being able to check for updates.  All other windows 7 machines on the network are able to do so.
I did check the local group policy on the machine, and there's no blocking of Windows Updates.  In fact, I explicity DISABLED the blocking of windows updates, and I still can't change the Windows Update Settings:

Any ideas on what may be preventing the user to check for Windows Updates?

I can't help but think this has to be a hardware problem. Fortunately, all the components should still be under warranty, so you shouldn't have trouble.

Start by running about an hour of the Blend and Small FFTs Prime95 tests (one at a time). See here: Hardware - Stress Test With Prime95

Also, run Memtest86 to test RAM more specifically: RAM - Test with Memtest86+

Let us know what the results of the tests are, and we'll go from there!

Hello everyone I am planning to re-install Windows Pro -bit on a desktop computer that I will use as a production machine for photo and light-video editing I recently starting getting a lot of error messages from processes and drivers not starting up some of Window's native programs failing to start Windoes Photo Viewer as do others which I have installed separately FastStone Image Viewer Although the error messages are not critical I plan to re-install Windows in the hope that it will be leaner take up less space and not bother me with its usual problems - the Win upgrade - endless scan for updates and reboot - and this new wave of errors Although all these problems have separate solutions which I have implemented I have put Never etc for KB Windows 7 production machine (video+photo updates) (no editing) I find little use for KB updates for a computer that is not used for browsing and that is used with a limited suite of software programs The documentation of the KB updates is also very scant and I feel like Windows 7 (no KB updates) for production machine (video+photo editing) I am falling in the trap of chasing the solution to unlikely problems by creating more problems So rather than looking for individual fixes to problems each month I can actually avoid all of them and any future ones in one fell swoop To achieve all this I plan to Windows 7 (no KB updates) for production machine (video+photo editing) leave out all the KB updates from Windows Update I will install the NET framework but leave out the quot security quot updates and all the other rubbish Windows is pushing I appreciate that it is a rather radical concept and that Windows 7 (no KB updates) for production machine (video+photo editing) many loyalists argue that the reason for the updates is to protect the user And that to beging with the updates were introduced to fix bugs identified by users But without sounding like a conspiracist I fear that many of these updates actually benefit MS and less so the user who is left with more problems after some time And if these updates were to do with online security then I probably have little to worry about Is this absolutely mad and stupid and if so why is that Or have people done this already with success PS I don't plan to return to Win XP because it would be an unnecessary expense i K Gb DDR Corsair Gb Samsung Evo AtiFire Pro W

Hi Ctrlalt,
Try running sfc /scannow(3x)
and as you dont like kbs run this alternative

post the output if anythings found, but not fixed.

you could also try
Repair Install
(no personnel data lost, but create an image first macrium/acronis/ameoi all free)

On a further note regarding updates
The w10 offenders have been pulled as its no longer free
and in windows update settings just set it to never.
updates can be downloaded on a standalone basis, as long as you know what they are and the number

I have a Compac Presario C700 laptop here that all of the sudden shows several copies of a couple of updates. KB2813170 (at least 13copies) KB2839229 (at least 11copies) It will not restore and says it has no restore points. Says it did not store last restore point correctly.  I tried disabeing AVG but still no restore. Has "D" drive backup but can't seem to get to it either. Should I change boot mode and boot from "D"?
I sure hope this is a new post and I'm not messing up again Hamulius!
ok a successful restore. Now it downloaded 2 copies of KB2799494.
Overall the machine seems to run ok but these constant repeat updates have me concerned.

I used to be able to locate bits of files that were "temp" or not saved because they were written on a site (Like this question for example) or because the program/page failed in some way and lost my text... by searching for "~" tilda
or #, that doesn't work on Edge...
I can't find the Edge temp user cache, and the search function doesn't seem to search for text in a file only names of files, despite having search full text selected.

What can I do to locate something I lost due to site crash?\

So, I'm working on a friend's laptop which has Vista Home Premuim (32-bit, SP1) installed.

There are 4 MS Office 2003 updates pending installation and they all refuse to install. I managed to download one of the updates manually to see if I could get it to install that way and it fails with the error code 1406 and reason:

Setup cannot write the value to the registry key \HWXlnk.E-lnk. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to access the registry or contact your computer manufacturer's product support for assistance.Click to expand...

I ran regedit and did a search on "HWXlnk" and nothing was found.

So, is this some kind of MS Office 2003/Vista issue or is the MS Office installation "tweaked" somehow?

Also, would these four pending MS Office updates prevent SP2 from being installed?

A:Can't get local search results on one machine (only web results)

set up some Win10 PCs.

disable networking. logged out and logged back in.

some of the machines now FAIL to do a local search.

any search terms type after hitting the Windows key, or typed into the search box produce NO results.

Microsoft is receiving *all* searches even if web search is disabled in search settings:
turned networking back on
opened cmd and netstat -aon; no connections to www ips
type a search for "notepad" in search box
my computer connects to a Microsoft IP address!

I would like to restrict anyone except Administrators from installing Windows Updates on my Windows 8.1 Pro x64 ENG machine.

In Windows 7 it's easy:
Control Panel / Settings / Windows Updates / change settings:
"Allow all users to install Windows Updates" -- uncheck to disable.

Is there a similar setting in Windows 8.1 via Control Panel GUI, secpol.mmc or regedit? I can't find it.

I have desktop computers in 2 remote sites, that were all from the same image.  The image was made at the regional headquarters.  Both sites have a wsus mirror server on site that they are reporting to, but they are usually (not always) pulling
their updates via branchcache from a non wsus server at the regional headquarters (and eating up a lot of bandwidth).  Computers not made from this image do not have this issue.

I've already tried doing a 'netsh branchcache reset' on all the desktops with this image, but it has not had any effect.

-any other commands I can run on the desktops or the non-wsus server that would fix this?

Hi together,
I have a virtual Windows 8 machine that had houndres of updates to install.
After finishing the updates and rebooting the system the machine stops (or takes very long time?) with "updating your system" 11% (for more than 12 hours).
For sure there is important data on the machine ;-).
I read about a problem with an old update (november)...
Any idea how to figure out if the machine is "only" very slow or how to proceed?

Hi I ve been running XP on my machine for several years and the latest reinstall went very smoothly until I updated my bios It may be unrelated to updating my bios but this seems to be the only change I had made at the time It prevented a lot of applications from running from Windows Live Messenger to various games e t c I assumed it was to do with my bios so I pulled the battery Update (XP Solved: won't on install same Windows updates 7 or some machine) Windows out of the motherboard also Solved: Windows Update won't install some updates (XP or Windows 7 on same machine) shorted the pin switch thing This didn t seem to make any difference I recently installed Windows x on the same hard drive and partition expecting this to cure the problem and start fresh however Windows seems to be having a similar problem in that I get errors on Windows Update E B and I ve tried manually installing some of the failed updates too and just get a quot failed quot message This makes me assume that it s either still a problem with the bios or perhaps with my hard drive Does anyone know of any software I can use to perhaps scan for issues with the hard drive or with the bios Regards nbsp

A really stupid question, but perhaps for that reason I cannot find the answer stated explicitly anywhere:

With regard to the threat description used in Windows update documentation, I have always assumed that a "local attacker" is someone actually sitting at my desk. Is this correct?

In this case, presumably an "authenticated local attacker" is someone sitting at my desk who has got hold of my password?

If the answer to both questions is 'yes' then I guess there is really no point in my installing updates involving a 'local' threat?

Incidentally, while trying to find the answer with Google I ended up with a 'captcha' page, apparently to check I wasn't a robot! My machine was sending unusual traffic or something. My numerous searches with slightly different choice of words must have triggered something. Weird and scary!

OK I have a winxpsp2 machine. It tells me on boo that windows/system32/config/system is missing or corrupt.

So I boot of the install cd (retail full owned license) and tried to repair but it did not show up as installed. (which is wierd) so I installed winxp in a secondary folder windows2

Now it is up and running on a new install, I ran diskcheck, but I think that this problem might be solved by sfc.exe right? If so how can I point it to the orignal install folder instead of the current running?

A:Pointing Sfc.exe To A Folder?

Can you boot to the first installation and then run sfc /scannow? It seems you should get a choice of which instance of Windows you want to boot to when you boot up. You should get a booting screen asking you which instance you want, and if you make no choice then one of the two will be chosen for you, or defaulted to.Of course, after going through all of these steps, why not just wipe the drive and reinstall Windows again?

A:No PS/2 pointing device

Hi littlelisa, welcome to TSG.

1) You might take a look in your bios setup to see if there is an entry there for PS2 mouse, and disable it from there.

2) If not, go to start button, settings, control panel, system, device manager, find the ps2 mouse and place a check mark in the box that says 'disable in this hardware profile' and restart the computer.

Hi Awesome Group!!! I'd like to know the procedure for pointing a device to a driver. ****Explaination**** I removed the software for my printer (USB)
and tried to reinstall it. I followed all the instructions but it never did get to the point where the icon is left on my desktop. The software isn't in the program menu either. I thought If I deleted the USB that when I restarted it would clear that usb port of the original software so I could reinstall the software and have it automaticly point to the drivers needed for the printer.
NO LUCK.... I think my problem is being able to point my device toward the drivers. How do I do that??? Thank You, Boing

Do you get tired of using Explorer to find a directory or using Search to find a file or want to run your Browser or raise or lower you volume without having to use your mouse? Then I think "Keybreeze" is your answer. Just install "Keybreeze" and then touch your semi-colon key and then type a letter or key word and you can eliminate the need for pointing and clicking using your mouse. The program is free for non-commercial or personal usage. Check it out.

PS. I have no personal gain associated with this program. Just trying to help fellow PC users out.

Hi helpers

I installed a program onto my D Drive where I keep my applications but before I unzipped it I forgot to make a folder to unzip it to. Consequently the many files are loose on the D directory. Of course the program worked fine until I made a folder and cut and paste all the program files into the folder (to make my D drive look neat). Now when I try to open the program from the shortcut on the desktop it won't respond. I realise it can't find the program so how can I tell it to look in the new folder I made? If I right click on the desktop shortcut and click properties, the path name shows the new folder.

Thanks for any help - Julie

You don't.
You uninstall the program to the extent that it will let you, and then you delete any files you ARE sure about, and you reinstall the program.

(this is distracting and annoying me although not mission critical i must admit) Does anyone know how to disable this indicator so the caret is just the straight vertical line again? it happens all round XP in any windows i want to type and also in IE search box. i would imagine it is a registry setting.

Alps pointing-device version

A:Alps Pointing Device

What is the correct model number for your Compaq Presario?

Are you using XP or Vista?

Here is version for Vista. It's an .exe file, so download and save it, then double-click it to start the install process, then restart.
