Kicked my IBM T-40 with winXP on ground accidently

Q: Kicked my IBM T-40 with winXP on ground accidently

Kicked my IBM T-40 with Windows XP on ground accidently

Now It cannot properly shut down it only re-starts, windows explorer cannot do anything except crash. the only thing I can do in windows is run task manager. If I try anything else windows explorer tells me it has to close; then all I can do is re-boot.

I CAN however boot it up in safe-mode with no windows, command prompt only.
My roommate thinks I must have knocked out the RAM so that it cannot do anything of substance.......

I would like to fix it, or I'd like to recover my data....
your opinion?

Thanks,
Ben

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Check the RAM. Open up the tower, push the little tabs at the top and bottom of the RAM cardsand pull them completly out. Once you have done that reseat the cards in order of size(if you have more then one biggest amount goes first, ie. 1GB card goes before 512MB in slot nearest the CPU). Push down on them and the tabs should pop in place. Try that and see if it works. However since you can boot up I don't think the ram is the problem, it might be something else.

What is a ground pin? The instructions on my chassis (antec p180) say that I should connect the RESET SW to the RST connector on the mobo (nForce 680i SLI), and that the white wire for each connector should be on the ground pin. I don't know what that means, the ground pin?

Also, the POWER LED is 3-pin but the slot on my mobo is 2-pin. How do I remove the pin from position 3 and put it into position 2, just pull it out?

Thanks!

A:Ground pin?

The wire order of the reset switch is unimportant. All the switch does is connect the two wires - it makes no difference whether you connect + to - or - to +

Yes, use a small screwdriver or something similar to push down the little metal lock and pull the wire from the plug. Bend the lock back up and push the wire in the proper hole. BTW, for a LED, the wire order does matter. Just try it both ways if unsure

I have bought all the components i need to build my pc. Ive heard a lot about ESD and how it can damage some of the components. I have bought an anti static wrist strap and anti static mat. How am i supposed to use the items? Do i put my pc case on the mat and connect the wrist strap to my wrist and the crocadile clip to an unpainted part of the case?

A:How do I ground myself

Wasted purchase

You really don't need all that,Just open the case and touch the inside metal
sides.Didn't these gadgets have instructions ? Ask here before you buy.
*** Don't buy anything for a PC without instructions.
My manuals say "touch the case first." then install hardware.
But turn off Power supply and wall connection.
When finished
Reverse the above ,switching on the.PWS last.

My wife is running a Dell Dimension using XP Home and it has been playing up for weeks, but the last couple of days have seen long periods where a mouse click does nothing, and the keyboard misses more than 50% of the characters.

When these problems began, all the usual virus scans were carried out, together with AdAware and Spybot, and I checked out all running processes for anything dodgy. We also bought a new keyboard and mouse just to be sure, but that was just the same.

Until today, there were what seemed like normal periods, but today has been terrible, it is almost impossible to close a window using the mouse. CPU shows as 98% available for most of the time and a repeated test of typing in The Cat Sat On The Mat just gave lines of varying lengths, but never more than eight letters per line.

Any ideas please?

i was thinking of doing one of those major upgrading overhauls...

i've never invested in an aluminum case until now...

i just wondered if say the entry level Lian Li pc-60 case coupled with a "quiet" PSU bought seperately would operate at a reasonably quiet noise level or would the 4 ball bearing fans supplied with the case as standard ruin the noise level by default unless i sorted them out with some kinda fan control.

A:building a new pc from the ground up

Well I've got the Lian-Li PC-50 and the 2000rpm Adda case fans that come with it aren't the most silent but still my DVD drive is the noisiest thing in my computer.

I need to know how to do this properly as i'm about to put my system together and don't want to damage any components. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

A:How do i properly ground myself?

It is always good to have a grounding bracelet, which you hook up to the computers case. You can get one of these from any local comp store. You also want to avoid carpet area's. Also, touch a grounded unpainted metal item before touching any components.

if i was to run a computer on a outlet with no ground could it do any damage

A:no ground on power

potentially yes. Electrical devices, especially computers should be grounded. Static charges are the #1 cause of data corruption and circuit card failure.

A cheap ground is run a cable from the case of your computer to a cold water pipe in the house.

im trying to use a case i bought a few years ago for my new core 2 duo system. it will work because it is atx, i was going to put a A64 in it but my uncle wanted me to get one that both sides would come off.

anyway

when i built my 2 other computers i used motherboard standoffs, i think they were brass.

this case seems to have pressed standoffs ( see pic below)

i know the standoffs keep the circuits on the board from touching the box, but im not sure if this setup works the same way, or if they will make too good of a ground to the box... maybe i should get paper spacers?

A:how does the motherboard ground?

They're fine - as long as they are in the right places - -where the screws go.

Boards don't need to be "earthed" or grounded, you can lay 'em on anything non conductive and fire them up - like a bit of cardboard etc.

I installed Ground Control 2 the other day, everything ran fine. When I tried to run the game however, Data Execution Prevention blocked it from running. So I tried to disable it on the exception list, except I couldn't. Apparently it cannot run without DEP activated for the program.

Anyway to bypass this, insights, or solutions?

What is the best way to ground yourself before upgrading your RAM? I'm no techie and I've never upgraded the RAM in any computer I've owned (I've always paid a computer expert to take care of any issue that required opening up my computer), so please give specific steps and please try not to use eserotic tech terms. Is there anything else I need to be aware of in opening up my computer and replacing the old RAM? Thanks in advance to everyone who responds.

A:Solved: Best Way to Ground Yourself?

Best way? A grounding strap always works.

..or leaving it plugged in and grabbing the case.. then unplug it before you physically install the stick.

I am trying to copy and paste a html to word 2007. My problem is part of the document is white letters on black back ground. I know how to change all the back ground. But only 3 paragraphs have a black back ground , the rest is white. Can you tell how to do this? Thanks Al Cassell

A:Back ground

im not clear if you want change the black to white or vice versa.
but if you have a play with the borders and shading in the Home/paragraph section,
you can create a box using "outside borders" once you have a box around the 3 paragraphs then click the borders and shading tab again, select borders and shading at the bottom of the list and you can select the shading tab to select your color,
then you can reset the border box to clear style in the borders tab leaving the shader filled instead , if you choose black the txt turns white so presumably selecting white over the black background will change it accordingly. cant say for sure as i dont have your HTML to play with.
good luck.

Because I've got nothing better to do this week (other than a soccer match on Wednesday evening and a meetup on Friday), I decided to try to do Linux from the ground up on one of my old Dell lappys.

Has anyone got a suggestion of a small CD-based install that will basically give me a booting CLI with gcc, nothing more required? I can't get down more than 200MB in one file (fscking insane proxy....) but at least I can get that 200 MB pretty fast....

Hi pink boriqua,

When you say background colour, do you mean on the desktop screen?

For changes there, right click on the desktop screen and click properties.

If that's not what you mean then please explain a bit more.

Well, this isn't really Windows 7 related, but more hardware related. I got my brand new Dell Studio XPS 1640 yesterday as a replacement system for my malfunctioning XPS. And...apparently this one has an issue too...a worse issue. If I move the monitor the correct way, the screen colors urn greenish, everything gets blurred. It looks like it's flickering. Colors morph randomly. Blue's become whites, shapes grow out of propertion and change. So I think it could be a wire getting caught in the monitor hinge that I can't see. But also, when this happens, static electricity is emitted from the monitor like a TV. But goes away once I move it around and get it back to normal, and use my hand to take away the electricity (like a tv). What do you think of this?

Yep, sounds like a bad video connection. Since it is new, I would contact them & say you are NOT happy & want a replacement for this one.

hello
I have Bose speakers with my Dell XPS 8300 and run Win 10 Pro.
I have noticed that since I got my speakers a couple of years ago, when I plug them into the PC or nudge the wire to the port I get a buzz or hum as though the card or the speaker is not grounded. I have run diagnostics but nothing shows up.
It only occurs when I touch the wire to the port or plug or unplug it. Once seated it is OK.
TY for your opinion
Peter
P.S. I just noticed that I am in the Win 8 not 10 forum and am sorry for the error.

*selfish bump*

since i read somewhere that the more info i give the better, i thought i would describe what i've done so far a little better

the computer has the free McAfee virus software that AOL now offers with the firewall

the McAfee has repeatedly deleted a trojan and names NTRootKit-H

this happened on thursday, i spent all day friday reading threads here on this site and trying to fix it. its a sneaky lil bugger, and so i started this thread today because i thought it might have been gone after all the programs i ran on friday seemed to help. the start page hijacking seems to be stopped, along with the extra toolbar on explorer. that was all gone on friday.

BUT... this morning when i came in after the computer was left on all weekend, there were around 40 popups. someone was here over the weekend working and they said when they were here the McAfee popped up again and they let it do a scan and left. so i return to a bunch of popups and McAfee results showing that it found something again after the scan.

so the creature still lurks

please greyknight, help me slay it

and thanks again for not ripping my head off for the PM, i hope this thread is worthy of some assistance.

I was reading somewhere about the marking on connectors (Molex I think, like the front panel connectors to the main board). There is a triangle impression on one of the pins. Is this a ground pin? I wish computer wiring had used a standard color coding. I know that on some connections, fitting them backwards does no harm but how about the pwr sw type?

A:Ground pin on connectors?

The orientation of the power switch connector is of no importance, the motherboard detects the short between the pins (I assume you don't have some ancient AT motherboard/case).

Computer wiring is rather standard.. The black wire is the ground, red or yellow live. Red usually +5V, yellow +12.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A:desk top back ground HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is a program called desk top split, go to your control panel asnd see if the
program is in your add remove, it maybe under a name your not familiar with and delete it. But first do a system restore to restore your computer to before this happened, in the future watch out what you agree to.

Hi, I'm looking for something that I can place a tower, almost any size and weight to raise it up off the ground a few inches, for example if there is water, it can't get inside the tower etc, any suggestions ?

A:Raise Tower off Ground

Hello Jerome,

Other than using a few blocks of wood, they have some nice inexpensive computer tower stands available that should do the trick.

The links below can help give you a better idea about them.

Hi,

Even though I have done it before, it was on a ?200 old computer and nothing happened and I didnt even know about static electricity. That was lucky I believe.

This time, I wanted to install another ram module to my pc, which is worth 5x more than that old one.

How yo ground properly without a wristband?,

so far I've heard, wear rubber slippers, touch metal part of pc(outside psu) with power cable connected but power switched of, touch heater etc..

I need some solid good advice, as I wont have any budget if i destroy my pc for another 5 years.

Also, I want to clarify on the powercable connected to psu statement? Is that ok or I have seen people saying never connect while working on PC.

A:How to ground yourself properly without wristband.

You can take the side off the PC with the PSU plugged in, get everything ready... touch the side of the PSU and then unplug the PC.

I've built a couple of dozen machines over the past few years, sometimes never even thinking about static electricity. Just use common sense, don't work in a carpeted room, touch a metal grounded object before picking up the RAM or touching any of the internal components. Don't over think this.

Hello,

Recently ESET notified me of some possible infections but quarantined, cleaned, and deleted.  System mechanic did the same and then I was also notified by my router that it blocked an ip address from communicating.

In the last couple of days my computer has ground to a halt.  I am waiting for things to open, internet explorer is crashing, outlook takes forever to open, if at all.  programs take forever to load.

I am not sure if it is a hardware issue or not.  I am running a SSD for my main drive and have a regular drive for the rest of the programs.

Wondering if you have any suggestions.

Thanks
Jason

Hello All, First time poster -

Been troubleshooting a new PC build - I am building using some existing parts (including an existing PSU).

Was experiencing random freezes and BSODs - did all the typical troubleshooting etc....eventually narrowed the issue down to what i think was the new video card.

RMA'd the card - and am expecting UPS to deliver the replacement card tonight.

HOWEVER - was prepping the system for the new card, and noticed that the wire for Pin 15 on the PSU was detached....Plugged it into a PSU tester, and everything looks good except for -5v which shows a fail.

Pin 15 is a ground wire (one of many) - what does this mean to me?

Should I replace the whole connecter? Can I run without an attached Pin 15?

Is it safe to plug my new video card in, and power up without pin 15 attached?

Thoughts?

A:PSU issues - Is pin 15 (ground) neccesary?

What CPU, MOBO, GPU and PSU do you have? How many watts is the PSU?

Hey
I just loaded up COD4 and it seems the ground textures have become transparent, i can see through to the bottom of the map, rather discomforting.

I also had this problem on another game (GMod) just yesterday, the problem still persists.

Any ideas?
I have a strong feeling it is some graphics settings but I'm not sure.

If it helps i have pictures from GMod showing the problem, i can give you links if it helps.

Earlier today whilst running utorrent, my internet connection was lost, this happens quite often and the way to resolve it is to retsrat the computer. I did so but on start up the computer took the nest part of 30mins to load and since then was so slow! Took 15 mins to open my computer. I appreciate that P2P is no doubt the cause of this but I don't know how to fix this. Another forum recommended doing a system restore which I have done but on start up from this a disk check scan started and this is still running over an hour later! And it's less than 50% complete. I have my dissertation for uni to hand in next week and everything is stored on my laptop! Please can someone help!!!!!

A:Computer has Ground to as Halt

I would imagine some malware probably got in and is slowing everything up. Firstly if you are using P2P for illegal file sharing then there's no point in even trying to fix it until you remove that, since that is most likely to be the origin of the problem. Even if the authorised malware removers were to help you remove the malware it wouldn't take long before it all comes back again from another download.

Assuming you are using P2P only for legal and virus-free downloads (which is very difficult, hence my recommendation not to use P2P) then the first step is to see what's going on in your computer. It appears that the standard way to do this is by a hijack-this log, posted into the security forum, but I prefer a program called HijackFree (fourth one down). Save a log from that and post it and that will give a pretty good indication of what's running on your computer. If it turns out to be a malware issue then it might be necessary to post a Hijack-This log in the security forum.

I have a PS2 that I mostly use for my DVD player (aside from GTA). When I insert most DVDs, however, it makes me reset the parental password --resetting the level to whatever level is required to view the DVD. It must be set at pre-shcool, cause it always asks. I know the password, but I'd rather not have the thing turned on at all. Is there a way I can turn it off?

A:PS2 taking the moral high ground

When i had my PS2, i would always have that same issue.

Just set the password to all 0's so you can just hit 'x' repeatedly

Or, you could get an Xbox which wont bother you with all the password stuff, and will also be getting GTA in june

My computer tower case w CPU was dropped during transportation to a new location and hit the ground pretty hard My biggest fear was that there could be some damage to the hard drives however I have not tested this out because I m pretty sure something else - computer boot! ground on won't Dropped broke preventing me from starting up the computer When I push the power button on I hear the computer begin to start up - the cooling fan is running the CD-ROM drive lights register and when I took off the case I saw a green LED lit on the motherboard so Dropped computer on ground - won't boot! I assume the power supply is okay I also made sure all components were snugly back in place with all connection cables firmly connected However nothing happens The monitor screen remains black Dropped computer on ground - won't boot! and I m not sure where the problem is However I don t believe it is a problem with the graphics card ATI DV because I don t even hear the boot beep so it looks like it s not even getting to BIOS let alone trying to access any hardware or OS Win k beyond that What would be the most likely cause for this Power but no boot-up BIOS Could it be something that s just jarred loose I tried to check the processor Intel or ghz I forget but can t figure out a way to safely remove the heatsink and processor from the mobo I m just trying to figure out a could it be just loose connectors or a broken pin somewhere b should I shell out the to take this to a quot professional quot repair place c or how can I find out what is broken so I can simply go buy a new mobo or processor or whatever I just don t want to buy more than necessary to fix it Thanks nbsp

A:Noisy USB ground on main computer

Hi there jonuk76,

My question would be is there any wiif devices plugged into the DAC? Is the DAC plugged into the front of the case? Typically the front case panels are absolutely horrible when it comes to audio. The wires from the front panel are typically not shielded very good. They run through the desktop to the motherboard and pickup everything along the way. You want to split those USB wires as much as possible zip tie them up out of the way from other wires. Or get some larger wire that you can butcher and use. Rewire the USB connector by pulling the pins out and milk the wires through the larger wire shielding. A cable coax line might work good. Some panels in the front are metal and have a poor ground to the larger case chassis, due to paint etc. Maybe taking a dremel cut tool and knocking a little paint off there where the screws go in or change the screws from painted black ones to cleaner metal ones. Just throwing some ideas out there. Switch the DAC to the back usb ports that are directly mounted. They are better filtered.

Hi Tzil,
You have multiple Antivirus apps. We are removing Norton here.
Java is presently a danger to your machine. You probably don't need it anyway.
------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Control Panel, click on Programs and Features
Click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall, and give permission to Continue:

Norton Internet Security
Java Auto Updater
Java(TM) 6 Update 25
Java(TM) 7 Update 2 (64-bit)
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 7 Update 2 (64-bit)
HiJackThis
Adobe Reader 9.1

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
--------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 11.0.01 are vulnerable.
Go HERE to download AdbeRdr11001_en_US.exe
Save the file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
After the new Reader is installed, Open Adobe Reader XI, as it is called, and OK the license.
Click on Edit and select Preferences.
On the Left, click on the Javascript category and Uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript.
Click on the Security (Enhanced) category and Uncheck Automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones.
Click on the Trust Manager category and Uncheck Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications.
Click the OK button
When it asks if you are sure you want to make changes to Advanced Security Preferences, answer Yes.
When it finishes, you can remove the Installer from your desktop.
---------------------------------------------
Download the OTL Scanner
Please download OTL.exe by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
---------------------------------------------
Run a Scan with OTL

Right click the OTL icon and choose "Run as administrator" to run it.
Check the box at the top, labeled Include 64 bit scans
Check the boxes labeled :
Scan All Users
LOP check
Purity check
Extra Registry > Use SafeList

Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
Click on the Run Scan button at the top left hand corner. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL. (desktop)
OTL.txt will be open on your desktop, and Extras.txt will be minimized in your taskbar.
The Extras.txt file will only appear the very first time you run OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them as a reply. Use separate replies if more convenient.

Please post the contents of the logs on the forum. (Don't attach)

My laptop went off a table last week Hit the carpet Picked it up restarted it it seemed to be just fine I could do everything as I used to but later that night a game I was playing completely froze Laptop the responding ground, not lockup hit and the machine eventually bluescreened It was late at that point so I turned Laptop hit the ground, not responding lockup it off and let it sit overnight It seemed to be mostly okay except Firefox would occasionally get the whole quot not responding quot bit for seconds at a time but it also did the same with with generic folders I had open and they'd Laptop hit the ground, not responding lockup progressively last longer and longer until it would completely lock up my computer and the only way to get out of it was to force shutdown the machine On thanksgiving I tried booting it up and it just could not get past the quot Starting Windows quot screen It was like this for days After messing with it a bit with a tech savvy friend we decided to just reinstall windows So now I'm on my completely renewed machine but I still get the quot Not responding quot problem that locks up my laptop While anything is quot not responding quot no CPU is being hogged up My computer model is a Toshiba Satellite L -S

A:Laptop hit the ground, not responding lockup

a couple of simple things to try, check the ram and make sure it is securely seated and do the same with the harddrive, remove it and then reinsert it securely. Sometimes dropping will knock things loose.

Are you talking about wallpaper or screen savers? Wallpaper is on all the time where as screen savers come on after a given amount of time that you decide upon, after your computer has been idle for that period of time. You can shut both off.Open control panel, open display & pick whatever you are using, wallpaper or screen saver.

This may help you...............

The menu bar and tabs may not be visible in Task Manager.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if Task Manager is running in Tiny Footprint mode. If you double-click the empty space in the border around the tabs, Task Manager switches to this mode.
RESOLUTION
To switch Task Manager to its typical display mode, double-click the top border of the window.

The was a broken plug in the socket and the power cord to my monitor, the ground plug hit it and sparked!

The result, I have a dark green screen, the rest of the computer seems to work fine. Menu button on my monitor, when that pops up it has all the proper colors.

What I have, cheap Dell 3100 Dimension, with integrated video card.

How to fix?
Can it be fixed?
Would a video card (for PCI Express x1) actual fix the problem?

Any info would be helpful!

Ideally when you first get your computer you need to run a scan with hijack this, autoruns or print a copy of all processes running in task manager.

When your machine runs slow, it may be due to running unneccary tasks, lack of memory, lack of free HD space, not enough space in the paging file or even a virus or malware.

This link has info about task manager and other information:
http://www.zen22142.zen.co.uk/Media/man_virus.htm

However you will need to print off a copy of whats running on your system (either from task manager, autoruns or hijack this) and then search on google for each and every process.

At least in task manager you can click on user name, to sort processes run by you and by the system. Svchost.exe occurs frequently in windows systems and some processes are dependent on others.

There is a free utility called "startup inspector" http://www.windowsstartup.com/startupinspector.php
install this, you then have the option to disable whats starting (without deleting it) and it has the advantage of consulting on the internet which processes are essental, user choice and not required.

One warning though, be careful if youre unsure as you may make your system unbootable, so now is the time to back all your own files, bookmarks and work.
Some well known resource hogs, norton, mcaffeee, messenger, itunes
Good luck.

Well I am about to build my first pc but I just came across something. I got an antistatic wrist wrap. It has a wrist wrap and another end with has a metal clip. How do I properly ground myself? Where do I clip the clip? To the empty PC case? Will that prevent static shock from all other components?

Thx Guys!!!

A:How do I ground antistatic wrist wrap?

Yes, you can clip it to the metal of the case. You can also touch the metal of the case periodically to discharge any static charge buildup in case you don't have the wrist thing on.

Can any one guide me as to how to remove the backgound completely.

Thank You.

A:Removing the back ground color.

You need an image editor to do that easily and completely. Viewers and organizers like Picasa and Irfanview are not editors and don’t do the job very well.

Select the background and hit the delete key. The easiest selection tool for that kind of thing is something like the magic wand in contiguous mode. Save as a PNG or GIF.

If you don’t have an image editor the freeware Paint.net probably has the best combination of ease of use and capability.

Every now and then my computer lags, but only for half a second. Everything stops; moving pictures, sound, even the mouse pointer. Everything pauses for about half a second and then comes back again. This repeats itself every 2 seconds or so for about 5 minutes! Its very annoying when listening to music because the song jitters when this happens.
Im assuming its a back ground process but I cant find the culprit on Task manager as it only updates its program lists every second or so. (even on fast setting)

Windows task manager shows me my CPU spikes to about 40% during this lag, then back down to its normal rate.

Any ideas are welcome, this problem is annoying as hell !

thanks

Never done it, and I know it's not uncommon.

I started to get cold feet when my sister's boyfirend, who does IT support in a mid sized American city, seemed to imply it was over most people's heads.

I'm talking basic high end, no 64 bit---SATA RAID-0, dedicated system HD, P4 3 +, Asus P4P800, 200 MHz FSB, 1 Gig RAM, AGP card, PCI soundcard, 1 optical drive (DVD-RW), Win XP Home.

For this kind of configuration, please evaluate how "difficult" you think it might be to get everything to work, assuming it's all fairly recent hardware.

1=Jessica Simpson could do it.

5=It will be fairly smooth, but you will log onto Tech Support Guy forums at least half a dozen times before crossing the finish line.

10=Forget it, buy another Dell you pathetic, naive little creature.

I am currently in the process of putting together components for a new computer build as ground to be PSU case the physically grounded via Should wire? the Mr Cranky well knows wave I was talking with a gamer at work about the components which I will be putting together over the weekend I m NOT a gamer He advised that with all of his gaming computers he grounds the PSU to the case with a Should the PSU be physically grounded to the case via ground wire? ground wire connected from the PSU to a non discript area under the MB This a list of the MB and CPU I will be installing GIGABYTE GA-EP -DS P LGA Intel P ATX Intel Motherboard Intel Core Duo E Wolfdale GHz MB L Cache LGA W Dual-Core Processor My question is with this arrangement is it necessary to have a physical ground wire going from the PSU to an area underneath the MB Obviously the PSU must be grounded obviously all circuits must be organized in a manner that properly uses the positive and ground config I m asking specifically if the PSU needs a wire ground connected to it leading to the computer case Thanks nbsp

A:Should the PSU be physically grounded to the case via ground wire?

The PSU is screwed into the case using metal screws. The metal box that houses the PSU is in contact with the case (usually metal). The electrical connection is always a 3-prong (grounded) connection. So no,you dont need to run a separate cable for ground.

A:A new IE window is openig at backgroung not at fore ground

This is a symptom of malware; you are probably infected. Read the 5 step process in the Securities sub-forum, follow the instructions and wait for help.

My mom is having trouble with MSN ISP - being kicked off the internet (disconnected) when she is writing e-mails.

I read sometime ago in PC World that there is a trick to solve that problem. Apparently, if I remember correctly, that ISPs will disconnect you when they see you inactive so probably composing and typing e-mails sends a message to them that she is not using the computer.

She is using Windows 2000 and MSN as her ISP.

Any suggestions to trick them into thinking that she is busy surfing when actually she is just typing e-mails?

A:Locking up on the net, then getting kicked off

I was on my computer and clicked on a pop-up that said Microsoft. Long story short, my anti-virus had expired ( unknown to me at the time ) and I ended up with a virus that totally shut down my computer. A friend said he did a re-install of Windows 7 without removing any of the data from my computer. My computer has been extremely slow and makes this odd double click sound when I boot it up.

I usually listen to music while working on the computer, or even let it run in the background. This is now impossible to do, as the music will freeze up within 5-10 minutes ( sometimes less ).  When I leave the site and return, the same thing happens or it totally kicks me
off the net, saying you are not connected to the internet. In which case I reboot and the process starts all over again. This also
happens with sites on the net, where no 'streaming' is involved.  ( This is my THIRD time now trying to post this message ).

I've had two different anti-virus programs installed, ran both and neither have indicated that I have a virus. I am pretty sure the
virus is still on here, I just have no idea where to start in what I know will be a very long and frustrating process.  Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi!

AntiVirus Issue
It's advisable to have only one antivirus software per PC as there will be a conflict within the 2 of which you have. After that you may want to scan your PC. You may try malwarebytes if you need an antivirus @this address https://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/

Windows Issue
I presume your friend just did an overlapping windows 7 installation and you still has the windows.old folder. But nevertheless, you may wish go to cmd and run sfc /scannow and see whether is there any corruption going on.

**Having a slow PC may have the following problems....

- Virus/Trojans attack
- Windows file corruption
- Low RAM

Thanks.

A:getting kicked off the internet

Hi, I'll be hgonest and say I'm no expert, maybe I shouldn't even reply. I'll throw in what I do know (slash) just give my opinion.

What do you mean by "kicked off the internet"? Is there a third party coming in and saying "oh no you don't" and blocking you, or do you mean that thew connection goes dead?
Also wondering where you arrived at those numbers (57 and 28). For me, to go to Control Panel - Network Connections - Local Area Connection, I see the speed is set to 10 Mbps. Now, this is cable opposed to dial; up, but I get one number, not what I want and what I get.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the speed advertised is not attainable, sort of 'in a eutopian society, this is the speed'. It just won't happen. If you hit 80% of what you are told, be happy.

The system you are using, is it fairly recent, with the NIC card in particular? I've seen people install XP on a system where it could barely hold the OS. Anything beyond looking at the wallpaper and the thing buckled.

You can get a fair bit of information by opening a command prompt (Start - Run - type in 'cmd' or 'command' - hit 'OK') and entering 'netstat -an'. That's without the quotes and a space between the t and -.

There's countless possible things that are going on, so I'll end it there ..... hope it works out.i

When on the internet I once in a while get a message that my computer is trying to connect to LAN #2 and a message saying I am working offline. Click tools and uncheck working offline option, back online. This computer is only a few days old and OS is new to me. Any ideas what may cause this?
I should have added the error code was 651. In looking further I see it is a Windows 7 problem.

A:Kicked offline?

I am running Windows XP and can not logon. It blinks thru "loading personal settings, to saving personal settings, to logging off personal settings". I tried entering thru safe mode and administrator and the same situation occurs. I had a tech person take the tower and he was able to run spyware, etc. which came up with nothing that would impair the system. Any suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

Hello everyone.
I have virus protection on my computer. But yesterday I was on the internet and all of the sudden I got kicked out. I went back on it and it did the same.
I was in the process of taking a test and I had to redo the whole test.
I ran a full virus scan and it is clean. I ran a system restore to the day before i had the problem and it told me unable to restore back to that day.
Please help. Should I take it in to Office depot for a look.
thanks,
ruthie
