unable to open exe from explorer but can from cmd prompt?

Q: unable to open exe from explorer but can from cmd prompt?

Hello As stated one of our customers has some windows based software Sage Line and Telemagic to be precise which is run from a shortcut on the desktop mapped to a network share with the exe located within however whenever you run either of these shortcuts or even if you navigate directly to the file you get the error quot Windows cannot access the specified to explorer open but from unable exe prompt? from can cmd device path or file You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item quot however the users in question have full local rights and full control over the files unable to open exe from explorer but can from cmd prompt? on the server inc the exe As they are part of the USERs group which have full control The Administrator has no problem in getting this file to run now the confusing part from the unable to open exe from explorer but can from cmd prompt? cmd prompt the file can be accessed So creating a batch file solves the issue However this being more of a work around than a solution There is no group policies that are effecting this as no other users are struggling Maybe there is a local policy in effect but i have no idea where to look Any ideas would be ace Thanks Ash nbsp

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Might as well try[post="RRT (Remove Restrictions Tool) 1.0 - http://www.majorgeeks.com/RRT_Remove_Restr...Tool_d5635.html "]Remove Restrictions Tool[/post]Really, you may need to do several scans for malware. The items that you cite are typical symptoms of some malware problems which I've read about.Louis

Hello all,

I am unable to open the Command Prompt window using Start->Run and entering cmd. When I enter cmd, all of the icons on my desktop disappear, the screen flashes, and then the icons reappear. The Command Prompt window never appears, not even briefly, and there are no error messages. I have gone into the System32 folder and double-clicked on cmd.exe, and the exact same thing happens. I am able to perform other commands using Start->Run such as %APPDATA%, msconfig, and explorer.exe, but the Command Prompt simply will not open. Any and all help is appreciated.

A:Unable to open Windows Explorer

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed, skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\nyxmc.dll/sp.html#10213

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\nyxmc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\jcjnl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\mfcsu32.dll
C:NO_SUCH_MHT.MHT!

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

I logged on to AOL IM and looked at a friend's away message. She had at the bottom a link www.talkstocks.net and I clicked on it to see what it was. Well, it took me to a page saying something about adware on the computer and removing it. Anyhow, it asked me if I'd like to download something, I said No. Then, my computer just went haywire, the little green light saying the hard drive was busy kept flashing and I could hear my hard drive churning away. I did the three finger salute, control alt delete, and canceled out of everything. Then when I click on explorer to open it it says server busy! HELP PLEASE!!! I'm on a friends computer now.

A:Unable to open/restore/maximise windows explorer

sounds like a corrupt profile. try creating a new profile for the user, don't delete the old one, and see if that works. but first, have the user go to another computer and see if his profile works there. if that doesn't work, the user may have a problem with permissions, did it ever work for the user? just had a thought, you need to get on the server and check the proup policy settings for that user before doing anything else, then try the other computer, then try the new profile. sorry for the confusion, it's been a couple of months since i worked on active directory.

Hello, In Windows Vista, it was possible to run an elevated Windows Explorer window. To do so, enable the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" check box, log off, and then log back on. After that, you can right-click the Windows Explorer shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." This no longer works in Windows 7. It is a legitimate need to occasionally run Windows Explorer elevated; for example, to register or unregister WSC (Windows script component files) or to run Windows scripts elevated. Can anyone comment on this limitation and whether it is a flaw or by design? Thanks! Bill Stewart

I am currently using Explorer++ to work around this limitation. But I would still like to hear an official answer regarding this problem. Bill

A:unable to open Internet Explorer with my Presario laptop

There is a Trojan that causes this. Suggest you start a thread here: TSF Virus help.

When the Trojan has been killed, do this:

Open IE, then click, Tools - Internet Options, click Connections tab - LAN Settings, make sure 'Automatically Detect' is checked and that the 'Uses Proxy' is unchecked.

I keep Internet Explorer as reserve browser because some government web sites only work with it.

Now I just fresh reinstalled Windows 7 x64 and Internet Explorer 11 and was playing with adding plugins like Flash Player etc. etc.
I used the browser for only a few minutes then suddenly it started acting crazy.
I type the address in the bar, the web page opens for a second then it redirects to a blank page so I'm not able to go anywhere.
Please check the screen shots.

PS: I struggled with the previous Windows installation because the upgrade from IE8 to IE9 corrupted the system, not I fresh installed Windows and again Internet Explorer is giving problems, how stupid is that and what Micro$oft is doing!!!

A:Win32.Virut.Gen.D has changed explorer files to .lnk, unable to open.

I'm afraid I have very bad news. Your system is infected with a nasty variant of Virut, a dangerous polymorphic file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .scr files, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. Using this backdoor, a remote attacker can access and instruct the infected computer to download and execute more malicious files. -- Note: As with most malware infections, the threat name may be different depending on the anti-virus or anti-malware program which detected it. Each security vendor uses their own naming conventions to identify various types of malware.Understanding virus names Threat aliases for Win32.Win32.Virut Threat aliases for Win32.Virtob.Gen.12 With this particular infection, the safest solution and only sure way to remove it effectively is to reformat and reinstall the OS. Why? According to this Norman White Paper Assessment of W32/Virut, some variants can infect the HOSTS file and block access to security related web sites. Other variants of virut can even penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files (.zip, .cab, rar). The Virux and Win32/Virut.17408 variants are an even more complex file infectors which can embed an iframe into the body of web-related files and infect script files (.php, .asp, .htm, .html, .xml). When Virut creates infected files, it also creates non-functional files that are corrupted beyond repair and in some instances can disable Windows File Protection. In many cases the infected files cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. When disinfection is attempted, the files become corrupted and the system may become irreparable. The longer virut remains on a computer, the more critical system files will become infected and corrupt so the degree of damage can vary.

The virus disables Windows File Protection by injecting code into the "winlogon.exe" process that patches system code in memory.CA Virus detail of W32/Virut The virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result it may misinfect a proportion of executable files....some W32/Virut.h infections are corrupted beyond repair.McAfee Risk Assessment and Overview of W32/Virut There are bugs in the viral code. When the virus produces infected files, it also creates non-functional files that also contain the virus...Due to the damaged caused to files by virut it's possible to find repaired but corrupted files. They became corrupted by the incorrect writing of the viral code during the process of infection. undetected, corrupted files (possibly still containing part of the viral code) can also be found. this is caused by incorrectly written and non-function viral code present in these files.AVG Overview of W32/Virut Virut is commonly spread via a flash drive (usb, pen, thumb, jump) infection using RUNDLL32.EXE and other malicious files. It is often contracted by visiting remote, crack and keygen sites. These type of sites are infested with a smörgåsbord of malware and a major source of system infection. ...warez and crack web pages are being used by cybercriminals as download sites for malware related to VIRUT and VIRUX. Searches for serial numbers, cracks, and even antivirus products like Trend Micro yield malcodes that come in the form of executables or self-extracting files...quick links in these sites also lead to malicious files. Ads and banners are also infection vectors...Keygen and Crack Sites Distribute VIRUX and FakeAV However, the CA Security Advisor Research Blog have found MySpace user pages carrying the malicious Virut URL. Either way you can end up with a computer system so badly damaged that recovery is not possible and it cannot be repaired. When that happens there is nothing you can do besides reformatting and reinstalling the OS. Since virut is not effectively disinfectable, your best option is to perform a full reformat as there is no guarantee this infection can be completely removed. In most instances it may have caused so much damage to y... Read more

My Internet Explorer 6 running on Windows XP will not open links in Outlook Express or on the web. All I get is a blank white screen. This is a sudden development. I have installed XP SP 1 as well as all the latest IE6 upgrades/service packs. After a few moments an error message - "Modname: Winshow.dll" comes up and shuts down IE6. Restarting XP is the only way to access the internet. After a short time the message recurs.

Has anybody encountered this problem. I need help!

I am desperate for help. Can anybody help me with an idiot proof step by step guide of how to restore my pc to happier times? It got infected with various virusses and malware inc google re-direct and I ended up with palladium pro rendering it useless. . . I have xp home edition. Used bleeping computer for step by step instructions of how to remove and was successfull... after a few days allsorts of popups, security warnings and redirect issues were back again which system restore got over (or so I thought). All this has come from me installing microsoft security essentials I beleive? I can no longer get on the internet, system restore now fails and I can't add/remove programs either?? Malwarebytes full scan shows 0 infected files. . . Is there anything I can do. Only have limited internet access through my mobile phone. Thanks in advance!

A:system restore failing, internet explorer won't open, unable to add/remove programs??

The assumption by many...that the effects of malware can be easily overcome and the system returned to happier days...just is not true.

In addition to file damage which may have directly inflicted by the malware...there is always the possiblity that key files have been damaged during efforts to troubleshoot and remove known/detected malware itesm.

System manufacturer and model, please?

Do you have any Windows installation CDs?

So, I went on a website and suddenly a thing pops up Ive never seen before. I closed it.. next thing I know Im getting a popup that looks VERY much like a Windows warning. (It even had a tray icon open looking like the Windows sheild. I looked in task manager and saw foy.exe Never saw THAT before.. found out where it was and deleted it. Now.. every program I open I get the Open with prompt and the "always use this program to open.." thing is not clickable. Currently scanning with updated Malwarebytes and the latest Microsoft Security Essentials. Any advice?

Thanks large.

I have a friend who is suddenly experiencing an issue where they are no longer able to Open an Excel file through their Windows Explorer (e.g. when trying to open a Excel file from within their My Documents folder). After double clicking on the file, Excel opens and acts as if it is opening the file but then proceeds to show just a blank worksheet. The file does not appear to be corrupt since they can then go to File/Open from within Excel, locate the folder and then Open it without a problem.

Any suggestions? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to the cause and resolution for this.

Thank you greatly,

Mike

I am running XP pro and have run into some problems. When I goto Start, Run and type in cmd the command prompt opens for a second and closes. When I goto Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt, the window opens, but to run ping or any other command I have to put the .exe, etc. In the pasted all I had to do was type in the command that I want to run. What could be wrong or turn off in my computer?
Thanks,

A:Unable to run cmd or ping without .exe in Command Prompt.

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

now Start killbox paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

The file name will appear in the window and if the file exists it will appear in blue under that window then select standard file kill, press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and once the file deleted message comes up then repeat for each file in turn

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CMD.COM
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netstat.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ping.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\regedit.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tasklist.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskkill.com
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tracert.com

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything

A:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps
thanks
Jared

A:Weird Prompt When I Open Just About Anything

If you are the Admin...and this is your system...and there is no malware involved...I would guess that a repair install would fix whatever is wrong.

You might look for clues in Event Viewer but an expeditious attempt at resolution would be a repair install. Sounds like the system is gorked.

What version of XP? Is it currently updated?

A:open programs from dos prompt

This is a Command Prompt running under Windows? Or, a native DOS Command prompt?

If it is the latter, you are in DOS. I don't see how you can run a Windows app.

If it is the former, you can run as follows:

Start Winword
Start Iexplore www.yahoo.com

This assumes that the programs are in the PATH, otherwise you will need to include the fully qualified filename.

I can't quite figure how to post without replying, so here goes.

I am running 7 build 7600. When I try to open the command prompt as administrator Windows goes to the User Account Control. I say yes and am returned immediately back to the desktop or the folder I was in. If I try to open without admin rights I just return to where I was.

Try this, go to Start and type cmd in the lower bottom box, when it appears in the upper window right mouse click and run as administrator, you can also make it a shortcut to cmd on the desktop or in the Taskbar set to run as admin.

I was messing around with the command prompt, trying to make a script to scare the shit out of my friend when he opens it. I entered the following code, under the assumption that it would make the prompt go full screen.

[Default.AddReg]
0x4,"Console","FullScreen", 0x1

After I hit enter it asked me if I wanted to overwrite FullScreen. I said yes and nothing happened to the prompt. But after I closed the window I was unable to open another prompt up. Task manager says its running, it just won't display it. I have tried restarting. Is there anything other than a reinstall that will fix this?

Please Run Setup Again. Well I'm pushing F8 to reboot with command prompt and it tries to load an incomplete Windows. I tried booting from CD in BIOS and it did the same thing. Now boot from CD is not available. I have boot disk on my flash drive but that doesn't work since it's not available in BIOSAny Suggestions? Does this make sense to you?

A:Unable to login to boot command prompt

The PIN method is not accepted or used when trying to boot into safe mode, command prompt or the other options for an advanced start. It will only accept the password you use on an admin account. Perhaps you have set up an admin account with a different password?

I've set Firefox to open various file types (txt, png, pdf) with their default application; the "Do this automatically for files like this" option is checked.
For some reason, FF keeps asking whether to save or open the file.

In IE8, the "Always ask before opening this type of file" check-box is missing.

(Win 7, 32-bit).

I'd appreciate your help.

I bought computer that I do not know password. I dont want to reinstall windows. I read that restarting computer and press f8 and choose safe mode with command prompt. Problem is my computer loads the drivers as normal on the black DOS screen but when it gets done and is suppose to give a command prompt it does not. It for some reason goes to the unwanted log in screen in safe mode. But that does me no good because that screen again requires password. How do I get the stupid command prompt in the scenario?

I've been looking around everywhere but cannot seem to figure out how to do this.  When I walk away from my laptop I always close the lid and when I come back I want to be prompted to enter my password but I don't want the laptop to go into sleep mode
or hibernate when I close the lid.  All I want is to be prompted for my password when I open the lid again, so something like switching users would do (not stop any running tasks or programs, just bring me back to the user selection page)
Thanks for any help

A:Prompt for password when I open laptop lid

Hi,

Please understand if your computer joined the domain, it would always ask for password when open the lid. Now please change Power Option settings to disable sleep
function.

1) Right Click the power icon on your taskbar and select "Power Options".
2) Next to your active/selected Power Option, Click "Change Plan Settings".
3) Click "Change Advanced Power Settings".
4) Under "Power Buttons and Lid", make sure "Lid Close Action" is set to "Do Nothing".

If that is not the case, then it could be due to some Power Management options in the system BIOS.

When I right click on run and select open as administrator, I get the following error: file:////C:/users/pc/appdata/roaming/microsoft/windows/start menu/programs/system tools/run.lnk The parameter is incorrect.

It doesn't give this message when trying run anything else as an administrator as far as I can tell, but it definitely will not let me open the run prompt as an administrator, which presents some obvious problems.

I have the only user account on this computer so it does have administrator privileges although they are not invoked simply from opening the run prompt normally.

P.S. I apologize if this is the incorrect area to be posting this question. If it is the wrong area, please move it to the appropriate one. I didn't see any other topic that struck me as appropriate for this question.

Thank you.

Sounds like it might be some kind of invalid shortcut. Can you please provide a screenshot of where you are when you right click. Are you sure it is not the command prompt you are right clicking? However, if it is, could you please try depressing the Win key + X and see if you can access it via the menu shown below?

Hi,

I understand there have been a few people who have asked this, but I can't seem to find a definite answer on this.
1. Can this be disabled?
2. If not, why not? What is the security feature or concept behind this prompt making it not possible to to be turned off?
3. If this can't be turned off, what do Microsoft recommend to customers in enterprise environments who have this requirement?  An e.g. is, a SAP database user who regularly has to download numerous pdf/docx files, but this prompt only
makes the user environment worse. It sure is very much understandable that regularly downloading files from a particular link, becomes annoying to the user if he/she has to click this prompt every time.
Thanks & Regards,

A:IE9 : Do you want to Open or Save this file prompt

Hi,

What I observed is when IE8 is upgraded to IE9, this issue is not experienced. In IE8 There used to be a key called HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
which stored the File Types that could either Auto-Open or not. This Key is not created in IE9, likely so as to support the policy of not auto-opening any file extensions but I believe is migrated along when IE8 is upgraded. This Key can be added
to the registry and IE9 still reads and applies settings associated with it.
Whichever File Type you need to Auto-open, simply add a Zero Length Binary value by its name. I have added AcroPDF.PDF and AcroPDF.PDF.1 with Zero Length Binary values to auto
open PDF files. These key values can either be manually added to the registry OR deployed using group policie preferences, and then the user is able to Auto-Open the PDF documents in the browser in this example. the same can be applied to .docx,
.ppt file types, etc.
Hope this helps many who are searching for this solution.

Hey guys. If I have posted this in the wrong topic forum, forgive me I am new here, and didn't see a forum for command prompt.

Just had a quick question about my command prompt...when I open cmd, and type in "tasklist" to view my processes, I am greeted with and error that states "ERROR: The system cannot find the file specified". I go into the folder for windows/system32, and "tasklist.exe" is there, however I still receive the error in cmd. Any reason why this is happening? Did I accidentally erase something? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Uber Philf told me to start a new thread with my problem. I cannot open an Elevated Command Prompt, Dont know why. I know that I can open it in two alternative ways : 1). Win+R, type cmd, hit enter eith ctrl+shift pressed ; and 2). start > all programs > accessories > command prompt > right click and run as admit. The prompt should be C:\Windows\System32_

But What prompt I am having is C:\Users\username_

Am I doing it wrong? Then what I am to do? I have user account control settings turned off.

Go to search by the start menu

type cmd

Before I had this problem, I was trying to fix an issue where .exe files would not open at all. The person who answered my question gave a link to a Kioskea tutorial, which I followed and while it did fix the issue, it brought up a new one: All .exe files open with Command Prompt, so I have to type the filename itself before it will open. Any help is appreciated.

It's happening in IE, but the solutions I've seen on the net all say it's a windows registry issue so I wasn't sure if I should post here or in the windows help forum. I tried to search these forums and came up with a "Fatal error yada yada yada".

How do you disable the prompt "Do you want to open or save this file?" I need to listen to a lot (dozens) of small audio clips (mp3) on the web and it would go a lot faster if that dialog box didn't come up every time I clicked the link to the mp3. I want it to just open the file when I click on it instead of asking what I want to do.

Thanks ahead of time for your help. I have a project to complete and having to click Open every single time is just slowing me down so much.

I have installed Windows 7 Pro x32 and I'm in corporate lan (domain), but I have admin rights. After a while I can't open command prompt, but cmd.exe and conhost.exe can be found in Task Manager. What have I tried until now without luck:

- remove policy keys
- upgrade Windows 7
- run as Administrator

But, I can open it using SHIFT + right-click and Run as different user and typing different user account.

As I'm programmer I tried to create console application. After i ran it i can see my desktop background through it. I mean console background is transparent.

DebugView shows this after opening cmd:

I'm not sure what else I can do except to format and install windows 7 again.

Thanks in advance.

Don't delete ANY User Profiles. It there is no Profile, you can't run Win 7. Did you make a System Repair disk when your PC was working? That could solve your problem. Do you have a 25 Character Product Key that should be on a sticker on your PC case? You can use this to activate your Win 7 after the install. Let us know the answers to above and we can proceed.

I am not sure it will work on the laptop but download ASUS's diagnostic tool.

If not ASUS's tool you can run Seatools for Windows to check your hard drive and Memtest+86 to check your memory. Run the memory test for at least 6 passes and preferably overnight.

Hi

I hope you are as good as they say, because here I have a problem for you

I have a server at my home network, running windows XP Pro SP2, and it is configured with 2 users. One Administrator and one user. When I connect using remote desktop, I usually connect as the user (Not Administrator), but lately the command prompt has stopped working on this account. When I type cmd in the run-window, command prompt opens, and about 1/2 sec later, it's closed. If I connect as the Administrator, this problems doesn't exist.

I have scanned for viruses, using both my installed Norton Internet Security package, and also using Symantec's online virus-scan. No virus found...

Anyone have any Idea what could be wrong/what I can do to make it work? I really need cmd...

start diskdefrag.exe

that is the name it gives it in task manager. It says it cannot find the file and I have searched for it and that is what it is. I was wondering if there is a command that I could open the exe file by opening it from its file location. Please help! Thanks in advance!

Hi guys I'm new to this but figured this was the next best thing before involving a computer tech. Ever since yesterday I've been having issues with just about every game on my computer. League stopped patching for "unknown issues", got home today and Overwatch was having issues with agent.exe(blizzards command prompt to run battlenet) and when I try to open a command prompt to try and force repair, it refuses. Saying that it cannot open the application correctly. I saw that you should try running it as admin, but I can't elevate the command to make it open. I know you have to go through command prompt to enable yourself to do that also, which as you know I cannot. I ran multiple scans and my computer isn't finding any viruses, I'm just not sure what is going on here and how I can fix it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Never run registry cleaners, not even CCleaner's. They can cause massive issues and more likely brick your PC.

I have a feeling that the virus has blocked the command prompt from opening. I would advise you make sure your PC is clean before we do any work:

Please read all of the following instructions found here: NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

After reading all of the instructions found above post the required logs in a new thread: Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help - Tech Support Forum

I recently had a hard drive fail. A friend gave me a hard drive that is workable but needs to be reformatted.  I installed the hard drive myself (thank you YouTube) but can't get past this error message.I have the system disk but the computer won't get past this error.

Can anyone help?

The message reads:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. Insert your windows installation disk and restart the computer.
2. Choose your language settings and then click next.
3. Click repair your computer.

If you do not have the disk contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.

Every time i open a program that runs in the foreground, a separate command prompt runs as well also in the foreground, that takes up a taskbar spot. It seems like the program should be running in the background, but its in the foreground. Whenever I exit out of either one, it closes the window that its related to.

For example, if I open Outlook.exe, it opens outlook like normal but it also opens a command prompt with it named Outlook.exe. It is not editable, and it seems to be a read-only cmd prompt. Is there a setting that enables/disables this? It opens with outlook, IE, even explorer.exe upon startup

Hi
So I supidly pressed the tick box where it asked me whether I wanted to, be each time i opened a rar file, be asked whether to save or open the file. Now everytime I open a .rar file it bypasses the 'do you want to save or open file?' and automatically saves and opens the file using the rar program thing. Only I dont want to buy it, and as I've exeeded the 'evaluation' period this screen keeps appearing asking me to by it blah blah. So my question is:
How do I restore this option?
Thanks a bunch!

A:Restoring the prompt 'Do you want to save or open this file?' box option

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/0...ore-check-box/

Open any folder with Windows Explorer or open My Computer, and then click on Tools in the menu bar and subsequently Folder Options in the drop down menu. Alternatively, go to Control Panel and select Folder Options.

In the Folder Options dialog, select File Types tab. This tab lists every file type associated with Windows and may take a while to open.

Locate and highlight (select) the file type or extension that you want to revert back the file download behavior to ask for open or save confirmation and stop the automatic opening or saving of downloaded file.
Click on Advanced button. You have to log on or login on user account with Administrator or Power User privileges to use this function.
In the Edit File Type window, clear (untick) the Confirm open after download check box.

Click OK when done.
Repeat the procedure for other filetype and ext that you want to change back to normal default.

For the past few weeks I have been running into a problem with Microsoft Office 2003 on Windows XP Home..which is that everytime I open word, excel or any of the office application the reinstall winodw appears on the User Information screen with the option to enter user name, initials, organization, and the key section with all info listed there. When I click on the OK button the reinstall options appears than disappears.

The crazy thing is that the problem goes away when I restarted my laptop and than a few days later it appears again.

thanks,
b
