IE7 icon not showing in the start menu

Q: IE7 icon not showing in the start menu

I don't know why, but I've noticed that all the programs in the start menu with links to websites don't show the IE7 icon. Why is that. I've also noticed in the system32 folder that the shell32.dll shows up many times with numbers beside them. I have shel32(3).dll, 4,5,6 + the original shel32.dll. I don't think it's normal. How the hell did they duplicate like this? And how do I correct the situation with the icon association in the start menu?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I must have accidently hit a key, now my task bar and Windows Start Menu icon in the lower left hand corner of my work laptop is not appearing on my monitor screen. UGH!!!! What must I do to restore it? This is very annoying because I can't get
to my files on C: drive or get to the internet. The IT department at work is no help. An IT tech remoted into the laptop and said "he's seeing the task bar running" but I'm not seeing it on my monitor....I know this is a simple fix because it's happened
before but I can't remember how to fix it.

Hi again,

it seems that the Computer option in the start menu has gone missing, and clicking customize doesn't work, since it's not an option there. If it hadn't been for my shortcut to Computer in my quick launch, I probably wouldn't be able to go there. When I do go there though, it doesn't show any of my drives, just a white background :\ Also, it seems I can't get it to display on my desktop, since in the Desktop Icon settings it shows up greyed out..

I think this was the work of Unibue System Tweaker, I got it for free with the purchase of SpyEraser, and I tried it out, but it's default options aren't the same as your current options, so when I closed it and restarted, some things I hadn't touched changed :\

Any help please? :\

For some reason, Adobe Acrobat Pro, PowerPoint, and QuickTime all have the default Windows "unknown" icon next to them on my Start Menu (and also on the taskbar if I open the program.) I thought I might be able to right click -> Properties -> "Change Icon" but it is greyed out and I can't even click on the "Change Icon" button.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Hi lwabbott and welcome to TSF !

I removed your mail since leaving it in plain text on an open forum will get you plenty of spam in your mail box in no time once bots will have found it. I can remove your phone number as well if you want.

Is it only the task bar or the task bar and icons ? In the first case have you tried dragging the mouse to the bottom of the screen to check that it was not unlocked and minimized ? What happens when you press the windows key ?

If all the icons are gone as well then can you access the task manager by pressing ctrl+alt+del ? If so what happens when you go to file => new task and type explorer.exe ? Go to file => new task and type chkdsk c: /R. You'll be prompted to restart the computer and your hard drive will be checked for errors. See how it goes.

Do you have the XP install CD and what service pack is on the CD ? If this is some brand computer that didn't come with a CD then what's the brand and model ?

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate from Vista Ultimate, and everything has gone okay except for when I press the windows key/Ctrl + Esc on my keyboard, or click on the windows start icon on screen, nothing happens. Another problem is that there are no group icons appearing on the taskbar (IE/windows explorer/media player etc)

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

A:HELP!Start menu and taskbar not showing up!

Have you tried going to My Computer > Control Panel > Taskbar Properties. And uncheck "autohide" and checking "always on top."

If that doesn't work, then try moving the cursor to the bottom of the screen and right clicking. If you get a different menu click "properties" and then click "always on top," and uncheck "autohide."

I'm writing this for a friend.

"About 1:00 this morning, my Gateway Laptop starting acting strangely. I was surfing the web when suddenly my computer began running incredibly slowly. I decided to restart, but when my profile opened, my entire desktop was clear, start menu included, save for my wallpaper.

"The start menu and icons appear at first, but then clear away after a while. In that time, I can open up outside applications, but not My Explorer or anything windows related. I brought it into Best Buy this morning and they told me that it was a virus that hit explorer.exe and that I had to back up everything and nuke the hard drive with a reformat.

"Needless to say, I wanted a second opinion. What do you guys think? I'm running XP, btw."

The name showing up in the start menu is wrong. I changed the name in my hotmail/outlook/msn account quite awhile back, before I even got this computer. But the name showing up on the computer is the old one. How can I make it correct and show the changed name?

A:Wrong name showing in start menu

Hello pancake,

That would be correct then. The original user name will always be used in places like this.

The only true way to fully change your user name is to create a new account on the PC with the name you wanted instead.

I'm on XP x64. Whenever I start up my computer nowadays, the start menu doesn't even show up. I've been waiting for a long time for it to. The reason I'm able to post on these forums is because I went through Task Manager, and File -> New Task (Run...) and typed firefox to access this site. It's just the idiotic startbar. Halp?

EDIT: Oh yeah. Whenever I log in (i'm using the Welcome screen), and it says "applying your personal settings..." or whatever, I have to hit ctrl alt delete to ge ttask manager. The only time windows will load is if the start menu DOES show up which is rare.

Hello

I have a strange problem and sadly none of the GREAT guides about the star menu on this forum helped.
The Problem is:

My start menu "All Programs" only shows the Icons/Folders from:
%systemdrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
But it does not show any Icons from my user:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

I've got no clue how to fix that. Can someone help me?

Thank you

Hello. I have been adding/deleting some entries/folders from the startup,
customizing it to make it small.

All was OK, but suddenlly the startup button only shows ONE FOLDER:
the PROGRAMS folder; all other folders don?t appear.

If I check with the explorer the other folders are there, under the
C:\Documents and Settings\Julio\Start Menu

but the only one that appear is the PROGRAMS folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Julio\Start Menu\Programs

Hope to have been clear about the issue.

Thanks for help and attention.

Although in the taskbar when the program is run from the custom icon'd shortcut, the icon shows up.

Is there something im missing here?

I used to be able to to this flawlessly before, but it's just not working for me today.

Thanks.

In Windows XP when you click on start you should be able to see the most active opened files show up on a list.

For some reason mine isn't working. Nothing shows up except for the pinned items like Internet Explorer and Outlook.

I checked the settings and it should show 6 of the most used programs. I also checked to make sure the prefetch directory was functioning and it is and I also made sure the dcom and support services were running which they were.

How cn I fix this because I find it handy having links of my most used files that I use. I would rather not pin them to the start menu if possible.

Any help would be greatful

When you say '..mine isn't working.', do you mean that 'My Recent Documents' doesn't show up on the Start Menu? Or that 'My Recent Documents' is displayed but doesn't show you anything.

In any case, I only can guide you to where the control for it is.

Right click on Start -> Properties -> Start Menu tab -> Customize -> Advanced tab -> check the Check Box under the Recent Documents section.

Hope that helps.

First off sorry if this is in wrong forum but I have searched for over an hour and have not found a specific solution.

The typical 32 bit programs are installing in the program files 86 folder. I understand this is where they are supposed to end and the computer sorts downloaded files depending on capability.

My problem is not all programs in program files and program files 86 are showing up in start menu. I have set my start menu customization to default and I am not experiencing the complete disappearance of all programs.

This is a brand new computer out of the box with 64 bit.
Thanks...

A:Laptop won't hibernate despite showing in start menu, help please

I also rely on the modern Hibernate function which normally works well. If it doesn't then the first suspect is the Display adapter. Run Windows Updates to see if there are newer under optional - install all Important and Optional as well and keep it set to Automatic Install.

If not import the latest display driver from the PC or Device's Support Downloads webpage. If latest, try the previous one. They are saved in Device manager>Driver>update>Browse>Let me Pick.

If this fails, look in Device Manager to make sure your Network adapter Power Options allow it to suspend for sleep. These Power Options may also be available on other drivers' tabs.

I ran unhide.exe and my subfolders and links are accessable but the start menu subfolder show nothing (blank). I have went back to a pre-virus restore point. The desktop folder and links are present but they do not shown on screen when I login. Task Manager is not available unless I login under an alternative administrator login on the computer. I am confused. Are you saying that the icon is wrong in the start menu, or missing? I see an incorrect icon there

A:Can't Get Rid Of Buy At Toshibadirect Icon In Start Menu

Hi, slagrec1.When you click start and the xp syle start menu opens, the "Buy at ToshibaDirect" icon is on the right side listed with My Computer , Control Panel, Search, Run, etc... Is that correct?I'm not sure they included the toshiba icon, but the settings for those are at:Right click any empty space in the taskbar > properties > start menu tab, start menu > customize > advanced tabScroll down the start menu Items and remove the checkmark for toshiba if it's listed.I suspect it won't be listed, so lets check for that value in the registry.Open notepad, copy and paste the contents of the quote box below to notepad. In notepad click file, then save asName it look.bat , change the save as type to all filesPlace it on your desktop, then double click look.bat to run it.Copy the contents of key.txt that opens and paste it here in your next reply.regedit /e key.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced"start notepad key.txt

Hi all
Im currently changing all the icons and folders to a new design and have done all apart from the start menu icons ie run / default programs / Devices and printers.
Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT_CLSID ive found the reg keys but when i try and change the default icon number i get
Cannot edit-error writing the values new contents.

Anyone know how to edit these please or why im getting the error message

Also does anyone have to hand the keys for
Administrative tools and Devices and Printers just to save me about 6 hrs searching
Thankyou

A:Change Start menu icon

You're most likely getting the error message because your user account has insufficient rights to do so.
If you're able to edit imageres.dll, you should consider editing the 100 icon in there instead, rather than messing with the registry.

After a clean install of win7 (x64), the start menu icons never (or take extremely long) to load the first time after opening them. This primarily happens at Start button > All programs (and the folders within all programs). After the first time, they load normally. This happens each time I restart my computer. The memory isn't a problem as I have 4gb of it. The icons/thumbnails of all my other programs/pictures appears to be fine too. Any help please?

Hey all, after using AlienwareGUI for a while to swap to a theme I uninstalled it after a while. The result made the IE icon on the start menu the IE6 icon. I've gone to the quick launch IE icon and changing that icon back to IE7 but it still didn't fix the start menu one. Anyone know how to get it back?

And yeah, doesn't look like much of a problem but I go nuts about it. Probably because im a perfectionist and every other IE icon has the IE7 one. <_<

Hi,

Firstly let me apologise if I'm posting this in the wrong place, and also if it has already been asked/answered.

I want Office to be an icon on the taskbar (which I've managed), but when I right-click on the icon, I want it to open as Win Explorer does into that nice table thing where the contents are shown, allowing me to choose which program to run.

Is this possible?

I don't know if it's possible, but here are some methods to customize context menus, and in addition, some 3rd party apps that can do so. Hopefully, you can find the way to do it from one or more of these:

Please see the picture. (folder names are deleted by me)

OK, yesterday there were those 3 shortcuts in top, 3 directories, and 'notepad, calculator, ms paint', I use all of those everyday, so it's not mistaken.

And today I suddenly discovered that calculator and ms paint shortcuts are gone.

So I checked the directory, and- (as you can see in the picture)
1.calculator shortcut is still there, but hidden in the start menu.
2.ms paint shortcut is removed.

So I googled for information and did what I could, I ran unhide.exe, anti-virus(avast), and anti-malware(malwarebyte), and I think my pc is clean, no virus or malware deteced. and calculator shortcut is still not showing.

I'm afraid if it's a sign of some remote manipulation from some trojan or someone.

How can I solve this?

A:Pinned start menu shortcuts removed/not showing. (win 7)

Hello Juj, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The area in your Start Menu shortcut looks like "recent items" instead of "pinned programs". "Pinned programs" would be above another line above your "recent items".

If able to, what happens when you "Pin to Start Menu" these programs? Are they pinned to the Start Menu afterwards?

Hello I have a weird problem with the folder called quot Games quot under programs in the start menu It is Start Menu... showing Games not in correctly folder NOT the Games Explorer link I'm having problems Games folder not showing correctly in Start Menu... with The Games folder consists of the following folders appdata Microsoft Windows Start Menu Programs Games Roaming programdata Microsoft Windows Start Menu Programs Games It would seem that the Roaming-folder has a localized name desktop ini - in my case quot Spil quot and that the Programdata folder does not and is called Games The weird thing is that the folder in the start menu has always Games folder not showing correctly in Start Menu... been called quot Spil quot and not as it is now quot Games quot It's an annoying thing and I don't get it - why has this changed Is there a way to make this folder appear localized again Furthermore I have some games in both folders which have lost their Games folder not showing correctly in Start Menu... paths to either the Game Explorer or the actual position on the harddrive - I'm thinking I may have a problem with permissions or the registry Maybe someone knows of a way to reset this or where to look in the registry or a way to reset permissions on these folders Thank you in advance S ren

A:Games folder not showing correctly in Start Menu...

After half a year of waiting for a reply and trying different things I figured it out. So to my own future reference here is the solution:Open the %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder
Create a folder named "Games" if not already there
Open a command prompt in the Programs folder and type "attrib Games +R"
Copy the desktop.ini from the %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games folder
Paste the desktop.ini to the %appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Games folder
And voila! The two localized Games folders magically merge into one localized folder called "Spil" in the Start Menu.

For some reason this folder lost its R-attribute which sometimes happens to the Program Files folder and other system folders as well.

Anyway, hope this helps someone besides myself!

Is there any way to have the contents of a folder that I have pinned to the start menu show up in a sub-menu of the folder icon? I have several tools that I use on a daily basis that I would like to have easy access to. Pinning then all individually would not be ideal, so I figured this would be the best way, but I can't figure out how to show the contents of my folder.

Thanks!

A:Showing contents of folder pinned to Start Menu?

Hello Sublimnl, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might consider creating a toolbar with the folder on the taskbar instead like in this Quick Launch tutorial. Just substitue your folder path instead. This way you can have it expand how you wanted.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

I've used powershell to remove some apps (like Xbox games).

On one account, it cleaned up the start menu just fine.

Second account, they were showing on the start menu, so I ran powershell again and verified everything was gone that I wanted, but Xbox is still showing on the menu list. *Not* as a tile, but in the "All Apps" list. I have also tried looking at the Start Menu in File Explorer for that User and can not see the App listed.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Yvonne

Bump.

I know this issue is complex but due to it, I can virtually do nothing on my computer (to top it off, the audio doesn't work). I am using another computer to post.

I'm just going to bump for visibility and thank in advance whoever is looking into this

I use the Classic Start Menu. Have new laptop. Start menu does not show full menus. Instead shows the damn arrows that Word does before you select "Show Full Menus." It's fine on my husband's log-in. I can't find anything in the properties that will let me select "full menus." Anyone know?

Thanks,
Yvonne

A:[SOLVED] Start menu recent programs not showing

Ccleaner can be set to remove the list of recently used applications above the start button so I would check again to make sure that feature is disabled:

Open Ccleaner
Under the "Windows" tab, scroll down to the "Advanced" section.
Make sure the following item is unticked: User Assist History

Hi, when you click on the link does the program open or is the link dead?

Have you tried going into the properties of the link and changing the icon manually?

If you require any more help just shout.

Post back with any results.

Problem

I dont have a touch screen. When using the desktop, in order to switch to the Metro UI one has to move the mouse cursor to the lower left corner until the Start icon pops up, and then click on the icon to switch to the Metro UI or have to press the start icon on the keyboard. That is time consuming and i need a more efficient way

Solution I am seeking

I would like to add a Start icon to the context menu so in order to switch to the Metro UI from the desktop all i need to do is right click. Can someone offer a viable solution. I also welcome third part apps

A:Add Start icon to right click contect menu

Hello Xav,

Pressing the Windows key is a one step action.

Clicking on the Start button is a one click action.

A context menu would be a two step action. Right click on desktop, and click on context menu item.

It would be efficient to use what you have already. Otherwise, please explain what would make a context menu more efficient for you.

Hey,

I have a weird thing with Icons, that I just can't get to work.

I'm gonna try to explain.
When I have installed 2 programs, Fraps and Avast Anti Virus, they automatically create an Icon on the desktop, but I don't want to keep those icons on the desktop, so I pin them to my start up menu and delete from desktop. But after I do that, they lose their Icon. So when I open the program it has no more icon, just like an Unknown file... What should I do..

A:Start Menu shortcuts lose icon?

Hello Aion, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You lost the icon in the Start Menu since you deleted that shortcut's source on the desktop. To keep the icon, you will need to either "move" the shortcut from the desktop to the Start Menu All Programs area, or pin the program's EXE file to the Start Menu instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

There was a sudden power failure and my computer turned off suddenly. When the power came back and I turmed on the computer, there was no other problem except with the desktop icons. The icons are split apart and joined in opposite direction. The icon names appear ok. Any new icons created after that appear normal. I have scanned the computer with updated norton antivirus, registry mechanic and spyware doctor, all of which show no problem. Running scf/ scannow command does not show any problem either. How to solve the problem ? Is this because of viruses ? Please help.

A:Desktop and Start Menu Icon Problem

Hi there...

why don't you just delete all the broken icons and recreate them all from scratch?

It's unlikely to be a virus but that's still a possibility considering your PC shut itself off for no reason...but this could also point to problems elsewhere. Monitor the situation for now and if it happens again, see if you can notice a trend i.e, whether it happens when you're running a certain program or game, if it happens at the same time daily etc :)

Ok this is hard to explain.

The other day I noticed that my start menu is missing pictures. And if I go to Control panel for an example All the icons except network connections and printers and fax have all turned to the white paper picture, and every program is the same, no picture. And in any window there used to be the blue part on the left with "File and folder tasks" and "other Places" ... that is no longer there either. Same with my music folder, they do not have the Itunes logo anymore. All the programs seem to work normal.... as far as I can tell anyway... I am running windows XP, and have not installed any new programs recently. I attached a few screen shots to try and show what I mean.

A:Icon Pictures Gone, And Start Menu Weird

Hi nam_acillatem, Welcome to the forum.I'm no expert here but this --> And in any window there used to be the blue part on the left with "File and folder tasks" and "other Places" ... that is no longer there either. <-- caught my attention... so here's my .02? worth.Click Start> click My Pictures or any other folder to open a windows explorer> then click Tools> then click Folder Options and look at the General tab, the entry at the top is TASKS... is it by chance set to "Use Windows Classic Folders" ? If it is then re-set it to "Show Common Tasks In Folders" and that should put the blue thingy back on the right hand side of the page.I have no idea if that will help your other problem though. I'm jealous over your FireFox browser though. Mine is all 'plain Jane' looking and your's is all hot-n-sexy looking. May I ask where you got it from?[EDITED] Oops! I forgot to ask; Have you ran an Anti-Virus scan lately? If not I would suggest that you boot your PC into Safe Mode and run one... there might be some kind of germ running around in your machine.♥ Wendy

How can I put an icon for Control Panel > Sound on the Start menu?
Also, what is the name of the exe file which runs Sound? If I knew that I could make a keyboard shortcut for it.

A:Place Sound Icon On Start Menu

Open control panel and select large icons,

arrange so hat you can see the desktop

Drag the sound entry (speaker icon) onto the desktop

This will create a short-cut to the sound control

You can drag this shortcut onto the start menu (or the taskbar it think)

Just checked this in Windows Ten and although it works it's only available on the desktop. If you have similar issues on the start menu right click on any item and choose Open All Users or Users if you only want this for your user and drag the folder into a folder (the start menu is nothing more than a set of folder trees) for a keyboard short cut you can move or copy the short cut somewhere safe and use this location as the location for your KB short cut)

Hi,

how is this done? If you're not unsure of what I'm speaking, check out this picture:

I don't see the use for it, and I hate unnecessary items in my start menu. It's rather pointless unless you save all your personal and important files on your OS partition, which to me seems silly.

Thanks in advance,

I finally got it back from being fixed because it was locked with Pheonix FailSafe and now they stopped supporting their servers so I couldn't get the unlock key from their website. Does anybody know of a solution to this problem:
A new roaming user logs in, they only see Desktop / Onedrive and Store tile on their start screen.
If they open the store they can install a default app like MSN news or any other app and the app will open. However when the close the app, they cannot find the app anywhere in the start menu even if they search for it. They also are unable to pin anything
to their start screen, it gives the option to pin but nothing happens.

Tried resetting their profile and still the same thing happens. Other users who log in see the default Apps like News, sport etc.
Not a major problem but just strange and very random.

Do you already have those items checked in the Customize Start Menu settings to have those folders added to the dark right side of the Start Menu as either a link or menu?

Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below to have them open to their C:\Users location instead of their library location.

A:Spyware keeps on coming back also can't shutdown from the start menu it's not showing

Hi -

If you followed the 5 steps completely, you'd have seen we want a set of logs from Deckard's System Scanner.

Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

I need more information before continuing, please.

For now, I'd like a more comprehensive set of logs from Deckard's System Scanner.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall from Add/Remove programs, and delete your current version.

Next, download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

When it does, just close it, please. Next....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Hi people, and I really need experts with this issue:

- I uninstalled IE9, then after restart, I can no longer see text in warning messages, windows titles, taskbar clock, or even icon names, something like that but without start menu even showing:
- I have tried all of these and still having the problem:
1- Rebooting
2- Scanning for viruses
3- Running SFC /scannow tool
4- Updating/re-installing graphics card driver
5- Windows repair from disk

- When I tried to setup a new copy of windows, I could not because it does not show me the message of "Press any key to continue" but only a blinking white dash then goes to start windows on hard drive. AND YES !, I set the boot to CD drive.

Please answer if you could solve this problem, otherwise do not bother to even reply with irrelevant posts.

So, number 5 in your list hasn't been completed because the disk is not recognized or did the repair fail and now you want to reinstall the OS?

Hello, I am trying to remove an icon from my windows 8 start menu. I have uninstalled the program (Diablo 3), but the icon remains under the games category. If I right click I get the option to uninstall, which brings me to the program uninstaller under control panel; Diablo 3 is not listed here. Right click also allows me to "open file location" which gives me the games screen as seen below. Right clicking on Diablo 3 here does nothing. I have no option to delete the entry.

A:Unable to remove Diablo 3 icon from start menu

Hello there, welcome.

Try right clicking on the icon, choose "Open File Location" at the bottom, delete it from there. See if that works? Also, maybe the install folder remained after uninstall? Do you know where the install folder was?

When you click the start button the start menu appears. On the upper right of the right panel is a large icon. How do I disable it?

A:want to disable giant start menu right panel icon

You'd probably need a 3rd party tweak program.

You can change the picture by going to control panel (view large or small icons), user accounts, change your picture.

Or click the picture on the start menu itself, then choose change your picture.

Edit: It's been discussed previously, with solution.

I was wondering if anyone could help with an issue i'm having with open folder icons. For some reason the selected folders and also the 'open' folder option display correctly everywhere else but in start menu -> all programs, where it appears to be a broken link or something. I followed the Open Folder Icon - Change tutorial to make sure everything was set up correctly, although I still have this minor problem.

Hello, I hope you are well.

I think that the Power Button in the Start Menu, where users can choose for it to Lock, Sleep, Hibernate, and Shutdown their computers, is very useful. I'd like to somehow tweak it even further, but am not sure if this is even remotely possible.

Is there any way I can change it so that when I press the button, a certain program will start up? Ideally, I'd like to change the action of the Power Button to start up a program called Vista Shutdown Timer (Vista Shutdown Timer), an application which allows me to put on timer on when I'd like the computer to shut down, sleep, etc.

Thanks,
Vic

A:Tweaking the Power Button Icon in Start Menu

Hello Vic,

Sorry, but no you cannot have it use another program instead for that. However, you can manually create a shut down shortcut that has a time delay and pin it to the Start Menu or Taskbar to run it manually instead, or just run the program manually to do so.

A:Wrong Adobe Reader icon on start menu

Hello Summer4Ever,

Does the shortcut still work?

You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help afterwards.

If not, then you could remove this shortcut, create a new shortcut directly from the file below, and move it in your Start Menu All Programs area to use instead.

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe

This is petty, but it's driving me nuts. A very short drive. I know I need to find iTunes.exe, but I cannot find anything but "iTunes" in Programs. Where is the .exe part?

A:Move iTunes icon from taskbar to start menu

Hi,
If iTunes is open and on your taskbar the exe is already open,
There are a few ways to add it to the start menu programs list,
One simple one is to drag the taskbar listing/ icon on top of the start button and pause for a moment until the start menu list appears, "do not drop yet"
Then drag it up to where you want it to be waiting for a horizontal line to appear and release the drag,
See if that helps,
Cheers.

I have Window XP operating system and can no longer access the control panel. The icon is no longer available on my Start Menu. There is an icon called Set Program Access and Defaults and when I click on it it tells me "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator". This is a private home computer, not on a system. Though I am a regular computer user I have few technical skills and may have entered an incorrect command. Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem?
