I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I noticed an entry in my Ewido Processes and Auto Start (there are under Analysis),C:prog files\java\j2re1.4.2_03. I located this file with my search engine and deleted it from there. It was the Installer file.I had previously deleted this program from the Add/Remove Programs. The Ewido forum suggested I run this Windows Installer Cleanup, but it has its risks, and recommend doing a registry backup first.
Has anyone used this utility?
Is CCleaner the same kind of program?
Will Norton "Save and Restore"(the new Ghost) back up my registry?
BTW,after I emptied my recycle bin,the j2re1.4.2 wasn't showing up in the running processes in Ewido anymore.
I am clueless when it comes to registry changes,so hope the above question makes sense.
Thanx!

Hi,
I'm having trouble with my HP Officejet 6110 All-In-One scanner working and HP Chat Help told me to download and install the Windows installer cleanup utility as a first step. When I download it to desktop I get this message and it won't install.
Script:

Any help for me to get this MS Windows Installer Cleanup Utility installed now that I have it downloaded.
I've already tried the idea of not "saving it to desktop" and just asking it to "run" when I am downloading it, and that didn't help.

Since Microsoft removed and stopped supporting the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, is there any other utility, even 3rd party, that does a good job of cleaning up orphaned Windows Installer files, and doesn't break things like Office 2010?

Earlier versions of Windows also had an easy way of uninstalling uninstall files for installed Windows updates... any such way in Windows 7? I know I could just go into the \Windows\Installer\ folder and delete, but that's surely not the best way to do this.

It may only get me around 5GB or so, but when trying to keep a tidy SSD for boot drive, any bit helps.

Ideas?

Revo Uninstaller 2010 or Your Uninstaller 2010. Their features are similar although Revo has a FREE and paid version. They clean up your PC immediately right after you uninstall a program, that includes registry entries, temporary files and orphan files.

Revo Uninstaller Pro - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems

Official site of Your Uninstaller! - Free fix your computer problems.

In my opinion, both are good alternatives. You decide.

Each time I try to update the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility by running “msicuu2.exe“, which was downloaded from Microsoft, I get the message, “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘msicuu.msi’ in the box below.” If I locate the ‘msicuu.msi’ file a message indicates that,” ”msicuu.msi” is not a valid installation package for the product Windows Installer Cleanup. Try to find the installation package ‘msicuu.msi’ in a folder from which you can install Windows Installer Cleanup.” When I click Cancel I get a message “ Error1714. The older version of Windows Installer Cleanup cannot be removed. Contact your Tech Support group.”
Thanks for any clues to solve this problem

A:Windows Installer Cleanup Utility Question

From Windows Installer Cleanup Utility for Windows 7

NOTE: The Windows Installer Cleanup Utility has been retired by Microsoft.
While the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility resolved some installation probems, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer. Because of this, the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center. There is currently not a replacement tool. While it may be available at 3rd party sites, it is not recommended to be used.

Back story
Last night I was trying to empty my os drive. i used tree size to find folders which were very large. A folder Windows/installer/ caught my eye I googled it and found out it contains installer information which can be safely deleted without jeopardizing the actual programs using windows installer cleanup utility I downloaded and installed the utility and selected all ms products and selected remove.

Problem
Now my MS office 2007 is gone and when I run Office setup or other setup it displays error "........ is not a valid win32 application"
All these programs were working fine before. I do not have system restore enabled.

Expectation
I am hoping you guys could guide me to a solution.
Also If I can find the logs of cleanup utility may be I can find the programs it uninstalled and reinstall them.

Iam running windows 7 ultimate x64.

Hi, I have encountered some trouble with my icons becoming generic. It started off with some icons turning generic, and then more and more over the past couple of days. When I try to change a icon, it says windows can't find a file in the %Systemroot%\installer folder. So I looked at the "Windows\Installer" folder (after turning on hidden/system files) and there was only one executable in it. I know that it should have a lot more files in it, but the total size of the folder is less than 1 MB. Unfortunately, my system restore doesn't go far back enough to restore everything.

As for changes to my computer, I did take ownership of the Windows folder a week or so ago to change explorer.exe and ExplorerFrame.dll (I followed some guide online). But I know I did not make any additional changes to the Windows folder.

Any suggestions?

A:Empty Windows\Installer folder and generic icons

If the problem started after you changed permissions on the Windows folder and then you modified core Windows components, then it's possible that is the cause of the problem. Hopefully you made backups of those files - restore the originals.

Hi

I acquired an 80gb external HD from a freind. It is not clean it so I want compress a lot his files and folders and leave one to side for while till its safe to delete it all. I have permission to delete everything. But I am being a little cautious.

The trouble is one of the directory is huge, about 20gb, with many subdirectories and folders. There many instances when whole list of folders are empty. There could be 100s or 1000s of these empty folders.

Is there a freeware filemanager with a filter that I can use to isolate all the empty folders and delete them. And how would you use the filter. I would then be able to defrag the HD.

After contracting a virus 2-3 weeks ago, I discovered your site and regained access to some of my files (e.g. My Documents). However many of the folders in All Programs still show "Empty". I see this problem throughout the forums but have not seen a solution that allows restoration of access to these files that I think are still resident. I have been limping along with limited software resources while trying to muddle out of this with on-line research. I've been fairly cautious in applying "fixes" (Mbam, unhide, tdsskiller) with some success. Please guide me through some tests to help me clean this up.
thanks,

Hello. Thanks to Broni for the below. To manually recreate "All Programs" entries, follow these steps...Download App PathsDouble click on AppPaths.exe to run the program.Keep the program open.In this example I'll recreate an entry for Avast antivirus program.Go Start>All Programs.Right click on Avast entry, click "Properties".NOTE. Make sure, you right click on Avast program, NOT on Avast folder. You'll see this window:Due to the damage caused by the infection, you'll find "Target" box empty.Go back to AppPaths window and find Avast entry.Right click on Avast line, click "Edit".A pop-up window will open:Highlight everything in "Path" box, right click on it, click "Copy"Go back to Avast "Properties" window, right click inside "Target" box, click "Paste".IMPORTANT! Add quotation marks at the beginning of the path and at the endClick OK and you're done.In case, program's link shows as (empty):Open Windows Explorer, navigate to Avast folder in Program FilesRight click on Avast ".exe" file, click "Create shortcut":Copy that shortcut, go back to Start menu.Right click on avast!Free Antivirus, click "Paste".You'll see Avast shortcut recreated replacing (empty) entry.Alternatively.......you paste that shortcut in:(XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Avast(Vista/7) - C:\Program Data\Start Menu\Programs\Avast~Blade

The stupid thing is back and can't get rid of it by closing or ending task. It just won't let me. The only way for me to get rid of it is to turn off certain things on the start up. But I don't know why they are causing the problem.

The start up things I disabled are:

hp digital imaging all in one files
HpqSRmon application
hp quick play

I haven't pinpointed which particular file (s) are causing the problem yet. but did manage to narrow it down alittle.

What do I do? I am not familiar with this computer.

If so, insert the Office disk and direct the Windows Installer to the disk, for the source.

A:Windows Update Errors & Window Installer Error

Hi jgb99 -I have just been through a severe similar case, that also included Microsoft Security Essentials Antivirus. The following steps listed by a M/soft helper fixed my problem and then 4 updates also appeared also. This issue can occur due to one of the following reasons:1. Incorrect System Date and Time settings.2. Incorrect Browser Settings.3. Corruption of Windows Update Components4. Corruption of browser settings or older updatesTo fix MSE installation and General update issues due to the above mentioned causes follow the steps below. Please note down any error messages or notable changes you find as you try the steps. :NOTE:- Before we start with the troubleshooting steps, I would like to inform you that I have added Result for each step. Please make sure that you fill up the results for the respective troubleshooting steps so that we can isolate the issue based on the results. Your co-operation is highly appreciated.Firstly please perform this general step:General step: Remove the other (secondary) security software (running multiple security software simultaneously will decrease the performance of the computer and the programs may conflict with each other)Please open the link http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_start/list-of-anti-malware-program-cleanupuninstall/407bf6da-c05d-4546-8788-0aa4c25a1f91 and remove the other security software using appropriate link and restart the computer.Step 1: Changing System Date and Time Settingsa. Click Start-> run, type Timedate.cpl, and then press Enterb. You will get the Time and Date settings window.c. Please change your system's Date and Time if the system's Date and Time settings on your computer are incorrect.d. Try to update any Definitions. If this does not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.Result: Step 2: Synchronize the time with an internet time servera. Follow the sub-steps a and b in step 1b. In the internet Time tab check the option Automatically synchronize with an internet time serverc. In the option for Server enter time.windows.com and update now and Apply and OK.Result: If this does not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.Step 3: Reset Windows update componentsRun the fixit from the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 and restart the computer.Result: If this does not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.Step 4: Perform IE OptimizationWhen you perform IE optimization, all temporary internet files, add-ons and customizations are deleted, and you basically start with a fresh version of Internet Explorer. Please copy and paste the link mentioned below in the address bar of the Internet explorer page and hit enter.http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9646978If you are unable to open the link, then please copy and paste the address in address bar. When it prompts please click on Run and follow the on screen instructions.Result: Now let us know if this has in any way solved any of the problems --Thank You -

My wife's system, inherited from her former job, is/was running extremely slow...slow to load, slow to download web pages. Additionally, an alert window "Windows Installer" is popping up everytime a new window opens (new IE window, etc). She had been using the system's programs at work, but doesn't need them any more: Dame Ware Mini Remote Control Server, OfficeScan, Hotsync, Gotomypc.

System Info: Dell Optiplex GX270, Pent. 4 CPU 2.8 GHz, 1GB/RAM, Windows XP (recently installed SP3)

Any and all assistance would be appreciated.

I use Sony Vaio.. the problem is that a Vaio Analysis manager / Windows Installer window keeps popping up and it suddenly exit without me even knowing what it is doing or installing.

A:Vaio Analysis manager / Windows Installer window keeps popping up

Hello zolboo and a warm welcome to the Forum
I found this on the Sony website. If you follow the instructions it should solve your problem

Quote:
This is the Vaio Personalisation Manager which keeps track of your favorite music, programs etc. As far as I can work out it is designed to make personalised recommendations of music or other things you may be interested in when using Vaio Media Gallery. Rather like Amazon's Personal Recommendations.
If you don't want this service then just disable it. Go to VAIO Analysis Manager and you will find an option something like ' Preference Learning' - just uncheck it and reboot.

So I don't know what I did, but now when I run a .msi file or a setup.exe file, the window I get is either way bigger than my screen or the text is, like, 2pt. Any suggestions?
pictures:
either HUGE

or really small...

A:Windows Installer Window is HUGE/text is super small

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes

Then run SFC -SCANNOW Command

Do you remember when this started? If so try to System Restore to a point before the problem began. The programs which were installed since then might be causing the problem.

I would also want a Clean Boot and to scan logs and utilize System Resources given in these Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums

Hello,
When using MS Outlook or firing up IE, the "Windows Installer" window briefly pops up, sometimes flickering (as if multiple closings and openings are occuring), stating "Preparing to install ... ". Then the box goes away.

From what I can tell, nothing has installed.

In MS Outlook, this behavior always occurs when I am opening an email. In IE it only happens when I fire up Internet Explorer.

The only thing that has changed on my system prior to noticing this behavior is that I have installed the most recent versions of BlackBerry Desktop Manager and BlackBerry Device Mananger.

Thank You In Advance

A:Window Installer window briefly pops up

Hi Machine13705

It's possible that the blackberry installations tweaked a Registry setting, or didn't complete their installations elegantly.

I'd probably try the blackberry installation again as a first try. Then try running a Registry Cleaner such as CCleaner (in case loose ends are causing trouble --- http://www.download.com/CCleaner/300...ml?tag=lst-0-1 --- the "Issues" section of CCleaner is the one that helps clear up Registry oddballs).

If that doesn't help, for the Outlook behavior you can try Microsoft's suggested repair (in case it's the tweaked-Office Registry setting --- their quick-fix is a "Language version tool" that you can download and try, and they have two other possible repairs as well) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/265194

And, since you are running Windows XP -- you can always try the System Restore tool, using a restore point from just before you first installed the blackberry updates & the trouble started. You might have to reinstall the blackberry update again after this (but you might not! - it depends on where the settings are that were changed).

Last -- anytime you have unusual behavior from your system, it's a good idea to run some malware scans. Use the "thorough" or "High" settings.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Disk Cleanup (Windows Update Cleanup) removes Windows updates KB3031432,KB3021952, and KB3004375. I have never had this problem before. I use Disk Cleanup after every monthly Microsoft updates. I had to reinstall listed updates on two computers when I checked

Hi all, so recently I have reformatted my hard drive and fresh installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my PC got all of my drivers and software without problem and copied everything off my external Hard Drive without an issue, also had no issues while doing Windows Updates, so anyhow after I did the Windows Updates on my system I decided to run Disk Cleanup and to Clean Up System Files, had no issues here, was able to select everything, clicked OK and then Delete Files, well now it is getting stuck on Windows Update Cleanup, been stuck for over an hour, any solutions to make this go a little faster, thanks for any help

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.

In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.

I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).

I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

Suggestions anyone?

I am trying to get rid of an empty window that I can minimize but cannot get to close. All that appears is a white window, and will not go away even if I do a system restore. If I left click on the mouse it will act as if nothing is there. The window is in the center of the screen at all times. Like I said I can minimize it if I have another window open but when it is on the desktop it covers the center of the screen.
Thanks for any tips you may give.

It has two tabs, one with the usual text shown in IE when you can't connect to the Net with the URL "res://ieframe.dll/dnserrordiagoff_webOC.htm#file:///C:/program%20files%20(x86)/common%20files/installshield/updateservice/pm.html" (URL shown when right clicking and selecting properties). The other tab shows a bit more, see picture since I don't know how to really describe it. Clicking the left button closes it down, most likely the right one does as well though I'm not sure if I've tried that one.

While all this happens the process "isuspm.exe" is visible in the task manager but once the last window is closed down that process disappears. Does anyone know what's really going on here and how to fix it? I'm assuming it's some kind of failed InstallShield update or at least my searches says it's InstallShields update manager but don't know what to do about it.

It is fairly straight forward. isuspm.exe is a process that belongs InstallShield from Macrovision The process automatically checks for the latest updates online. ....

Your dnserrordiag error is because isuspm cant contact macrovision either becasue you are not connected to the internet, or there server is down.

To fix the problem simply remove macrovision.

Run into a strange problem. I have been running Win7 for 2 years with no problems. I have Updates set to user choose.
Problem is following:
I call up Windows Update in Control Panel - the window opens fine and tells me I have 5 Important and 4 Optional, however when I click on Important the 5 tab on the left is shown but the window with update details is empty, the same applies to Optional.
So update tells me I have updates and how many but will not show them or give me access to them.
I have no new software installs or updates that could conflict.
Can anybody help.
Thanks

Hi, I have an ACER Travelmate 4000 laptop with Win XP Pro. I went to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs to check what was slowing the laptop so much and remove it. However the screen is empty. The "Wait while this is populated" comes on and the torch-light does not. The mouse shows no animation. Waited for ever. Then restored system to 10 days back in small steps (1 day, 2 days etc). No change. All other programs seem to be running ok. But I am very uncomfortable, that something is going to stop working.... Help me Please..

My computer was hit a malware. I was able to clean/quarantine the malware, but my startup folder is empty.

From the Windows logo start, I am able to see the folders in "All Programs". But all the folders are empty. These startup folders are also empty when I navigate to their locations in Window Explorer.

My programs are still installed and I can start them from their installed locations. How do I rebuild the startup folder?
Thanks

P.S. The "AppData" and the "ProgramData" folders are visible. I'd rather not create shortcuts to all my installed programs one at a time

Welcome to the Seven Forums
Navigate to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
AppData Is hidden use this tutorial to see it Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide

Then you will need to go to the programs .exe and create a shortcut and put it in the startup folder. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...r-program.html

Just as the title says, when we click Help in Word, Outlook, etc - all the apps that installed with Office 2007, we get the Online Help window, but it is empty.

It was not like that originally, but we do not know when it began. Worried that reinstalling Office will wipe out our custom templates, words, macros, add-ins, etc etc. so hoping there is a registry pointer to be fixed, or content from the install cd's that we can just extract and place on the hard drive where they are needed. Or maybe the firewall is blocking content from appearing?

Greetings,

Just started installing software on a new Windows 7 64 bit box. I uninstalled a useless extra utility program that came with my mobo. The program was unisntalled however every time I boot windows, an empty instalshield window with a blank button appears. If I click on the button the window closes or if I close the window by clicking on the red all seems well. I found that the process causing this window is ISUSPM.exe*32 which is InstallShield Update Service Update Manager using task manager.

How do I stop this process from spawning a window every time I boot?

Cheers,
Marc

Hi and welcome,

Sorry for delay.

What is windows installer wanting to install? It should say something about what it is "configuring"..

If you still need assistance, please post a fresh hijackthis log here.

I'd like to see an uninstall list too please.
Open Hijackthis
click "config"
Click "misc tools"
Click "open uninstall manager"
Click "save list..."
Save the list & post it here.

Question....(s)
Since you installed McAfee have you uninstalled Trend Micro Office scan?
I see both running and this might be part of the issue especially if it was a partial uninstall.

Did you install WinPCap? (mabye along side network monitor tools such as Wireshark?)
O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - CACE Technologies - C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe

I see that being installed by both legit and malware. is why I ask.

Where are these links located? Are they shortcuts on the desktop or on the program menu?
Right-click any of the actual links/Properties and paste the "Target" or "URL" contents here.
You may find these programs in C:|Program Files, where you can create new shortcuts.

Hi guys, my problem is what I thought was fairly straight forward. I recently bought an Officejet 6500. I loaded the disc to install drivers and the window is in Portuguese! I checked my regional language settings and it is in English. I even tried other discs to see whether that was the problem, it wasn't. This is the second disc I have received from HP and am unable to use the equipment due to this. I am running XP. Please help.

Hi guys,

I am currently running window Xp home (x86), and i have a problem with my window installer. Whenever i try to install or uninstall something the following message pops up
"
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.
This can occur if you are running Windows in safe
mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly
installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. "

i tried re-registering it, window installer cleanup utility is no longer avaliable so i can't use it, and even if it was still avaliable i can't install anything...

Please help me!

Oh! and there's one more problem. For some reasons ever since i got the window installer error, my computer became super slow. Especially at start up, it would stay a blank screen for 4-5 minutes until my icons and the task bar pops up. And even after its done loading, the taskbar freezes

Have you checked the Windows Installer service?

Click Start > Run > type services.msc

Scroll down the list to the Windows Installer service.

Double-click the service.

Make sure the Startup Type is set to Manual.
And,
Please click HERE to run HijackThis.

Select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything
