Any system monitoring software? Windows Server 2003 and XP.

Q: Any system monitoring software? Windows Server 2003 and XP.

I have a 2 PCs that are randomly powering off. One more than the other. Both are giving the same symptoms but I have no clue how to figure out what is going on. I need help from a software to figure these out.

1) Event logs are clean no stop signs or exclamtion points prior to shutdown.
2) Just gives an indicator last shutdown was unexpected.
3) memtest runs through fine.
4) Shutdown is 100% random not any timed thing.
5) Happens when idle and at full use.
6) No blue screen at all.
7) No dump files.
8) Different power sources have been used/on top of the fact one is a laptop with a fine battery.

I am all out of troubleshooting ideas. Any thoughts on something that is a realtime system monitor that might catch WHY these systems are shutting down?

Preferred Solution: Any system monitoring software? Windows Server 2003 and XP.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. My friend is writing an article about network and server monitoring systems. She has prepared a 2 question mini-survey to determine which of the most popular systems are most widely used and the correlation of the used system with the size of the infrastructure. The survey is inteded for system/network administrators who are responsible for network and server support and maintenance. The survey is available > here <.

Somebody please help me. A walkthrough would be great. This is my problem. I have a server at work, I am a computer engineer, however the problem is I have not had much experience with servers. My task is to install some software onto the server (Windows Server 2003) so that the software can then be accessed and run on each client computer (PC that is connected to the server)

Would anyone have any tips, or be able to walk me through doing this ?

Please help, and thanks.

You got me on what the aux one monitors Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I have a set of 5 machines - 2 desktops (one being a thin client and the other to function as a 'server' ) and 3 notebooks. I was wondering what was the difference b/w the 2 versions Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003. Is it true one cannot use a thin client but need a regular cpu setup to use Small Business Server 2003 ?

There is a difference in costs and since i have windows 2000 on the desktops and xp on the notebooks wondered if i needed to shell out so much more $$ for the Windows Server 2003 . I plan to put in a wireless networking system to link all the 5 machines.

Thanks in advance for any and all advise.

A:Solved: Difference b/w Windows Server 2003 and Small Business Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:
- Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory® forest.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.
- A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.
- Each additional server must have a Windows Small Business Server 2003 client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.
The standard edition of Windows Small Business Server 2003 includes Windows Server 2003 technologies, including fax service, firewall service, and remote-access service. Additionally, it includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, enhanced tools for server monitoring and administration, and an out-of-the-box solution for internal Web sites. The standard edition is ideal for customers who do not require the higher-level functionality included in the premium edition

The premium edition includes everything in the standard edition, plus Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, and Microsoft FrontPage® 2003. The premium edition is ideal for small businesses with more demanding IT needs, such as data-intensive line-of-business applications, or advanced firewall and Web-caching capabilities

The standard edition has most of the stuffs inside.

If this is possible through win2k server, let me know and explain how I set it up, or where i navigate to to see it. If not, what programs are most commonly used to monitor these types of things. Thanks

A:Software Raid5 in Server 2003

If the OS is not part of the array and you have installed applications on the array you will have to restore those applications as well. I am not even sure you can make the OS part of an RAID 5 array. Your best bet would be to restore the OS volume from a full backup...the OS won't know the difference since the array looks like one big drive to it.

Hello I created the following performance counter using logman exe nbsp logman exe counters incorrectly Server Windows correctly creates performance on 2003 but Server Windows Logman 2008/2012 on create counter US Triton Perf Log -b -e -r -s server -si frequence -cf folder server txt -f logtype nbsp -o C local logs Perfout Server --a -v mmddhhmm nbsp -rf nbsp max Logman creates performance counters on Windows Server 2008/2012 correctly but incorrectly on Windows Server 2003 duration When I do this across multiple servers specifically for Windows Servers the counter is created to repeat and run everyday at PM and stops running everyday at PM This works perfectly fine as intended However When I do this for a Windows server my created counter is very different For example in this case I have set to the counters to start at AM and end at PM because I have set a maximum duration of hours the job terminates and begins on the next day since Logman creates performance counters on Windows Server 2008/2012 correctly but incorrectly on Windows Server 2003 I have the repeat option on However this does not apply to our server logman creates the job to run once a week in this case it would be on a Wednesday In addiiton I noticed that the job doesn't not even start at it's indented time It actually does not start at all I also notice that the jobs on all windows servers are created in a pending status which then prevents me from removing Logman creates performance counters on Windows Server 2008/2012 correctly but incorrectly on Windows Server 2003 the counter remotely nbsp I would like to know if windows is capable of working like my win servers using logman and if historically the job has to be kicked off through scheduled task nbsp Both Jobs are using the same criteria but are created differently The top photo was created on a windows server and the bottom photo was created on windows server Am I missing something here FYI I have a script to automate across servers so when I deployed this it turned out about servers were actually running as intended and a whole bunch of them were in pending status and all stopped nbsp I appreciate any response on this issue

I was just thinking doing downloading AVG free, Adaware SE, Spybot, and Spyblaster for protection for my clients. Why don't I store these install files this time? Then I thought why not just get WMI files of them if possible. Then I realized I'm a total noob to pushing out things and should probably ask how is the preferred method before doing it. Now I know that MS Server 2003 can push out things but I am unclear about 2 things.

1. Where should you store those WMI files you want to push out to select later?

2. If I can't get a WMI file is there a converter or should I get a third party product that can push out?

Anyone that can help would be great, right now I'm just storing the .exe files in a folder on the server. I know in theory you can do it, I just haven't done it yet with anything.

I will start by saying what I have been using for desktop computers. I like the way Ghost 15 works. It lets me set the days of the week or month to back up and allows me to specify how many backups it saves and deletes the oldest backup image as it makes a new one.

If Ghost 15 would work on Windows 2003 Server, I would be well pleased.

What is there that is similar that will work on Windows 2003 Server?

And that doesn't cost a fortune?

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

We had:

1) 1 Windows Server 2003 running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 workstations.

We now want to have:

1) 1 Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Active Directory services to manage logon and permissions for file sharing.
2) 15 same workstations, with their same user profiles.

So I joined the 2008 R2 server to the domain, and then used the dcpromo tool to make it a domain controller.

Problem is, whenever I take the old server offline, (the 2003 one) everything flips out, logons are slow, and the 2008 server gives people trying to access shared files weird errors like that the server that authenticated them cannot be contacted, and asks them to log in again with their username and password before accessing shared files on the server.

What did I do wrong? I must be forgetting something.

A:Non Admin not able to connect OPC server in Windows Server 2003

From what I've read on this thread, you'll need to set computer-wide DCOM security permissions. You'll want to peruse that thread.

On another note, this isn't really the best spot for this question. An error message isn't a crash, hang or bsod, and the situation is more relevant to specifically the Windows Server section (even though OPC servers can and often do exist in many client versions of Windows). You'll be able to receive more help there, as it's pertinent to your needs.

I am running Windows Server 2003 with Terminal Services enabled and was wondering if there are any compatibility problems with installing Word 2003. Microsofts website says Windows 2000 with SP3, Windows XP, or later as OS requirements but that is very general.

Thanks in advance, Dave

I want to know what is the best and easy to use Parental Control Software to filter and monitor the internet usage of children?

We have a Server 2003 and it is constantly uploading data. It is maxing out our bandwidth making are internet very slow with extremely high ping times. I've downloaded Netbalancer and it says its coming from "System", which then says unknown as its path. It also happens randomly. It'll be gone for 3 days, then show up for a day, and sometimes it'll start/stop 6-7 times throughout any given workday. I've scanned the server with Sophos antivirus, Malwarebytes, and Spybot. The only thing found was a couple cookies by Spybot which did not solve the problem. I'm going to tun a Microsoft Safety Scanner test tonight and see if that turns up anything.For now; I have limited the system process using Netbalancer.Below is a screen shot of the process and massive upload!

We have a Windows 7 Pro laptop that can't see any of the 300 or so Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Machines.

It can, however, see all (around 13) Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7 Machines that are on the network. Using \\ServerName\Share doesn't connect, and they don't show up on the network map.

It can ping the servers though. They ping by hostname and by ip address. Other Windows 7 Pro Laptops don't have this same problem!

Additional Info:
They are all joined to the domain; servers, laptaps, etc.

Hello all I m not sure if this is an operating system question or more of a software development question Anyway I have a legacy COM service a COM server 2003 Server execution Windows - connecting when on service DCOM "Server failed" that runs as a windows service that was written for Windows NT I have managed to use the service on both Windows and Windows XP unchanged However I now wish to run the service on a Windows Server machine and I can t seem to DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting get it to work This is what happens - Install the service and set it to log on using a domain account Start the service from the services msc applet Start the client application and connect to the service At this stagte the client applicaiton freezes for approximately seconds and DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting then returns with the error message quot Server execution failed quot I ve also tried using the client whilst the service is stopped In this case when I connect the service is started but I get the same error The development team also provided a standalone application that hosts the exact same COM objects mainly for debugging purposes If I use the standalone application everything works fine Its all very strange Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be And preferably a solution Thanks Kep nbsp

A:DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting

I found the answer.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...-DC48AB0DA5C9&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

The above discussion says that a service must enter a running state before a COM server calls CoRergisterClassObject. So I guess its a development problem.

Not sure why it only manifests on Windows Server 2003 though.

Information for how to configure a Windows2003 VPN server can be found at:

You don't need to make any changes or additions to shares in regards to VPN client's being able to access previous shares on the server. Whatever you have assigned for the LAN access can work for VPN.

Hello fellows!

I am being heavily monitored by the company server (AS400), I keep my computer downloading torrents almost 24/7.... The chief at the computer department called me to ask me what where 5 archives of 700mb each my computer downloaded the past 5 days..... I was shocked to hear the question!

Can they really know what I'm downloading?... Is there a way to bypass their monitoring system?..... I don't see any unusual software on my computer so I guess it has to be windows based(WinXP no service packs)...... Please Help!

Thanx in advanced!

A:Server Monitoring!

Firstly, the internet is transparent. Anyone with access to the wire sees everything you do with the exception of encrypted content (your online banking is safe).

Secondly, if it is your work computer then your work admins can do anything in there with their administrative rights. And there is nothing you can do about that either.

You just have to accept that it is the company computer and the company internet connection and that you will have to use them on the company terms.

A:Solved: Excel 2003 Task Performance Monitoring

"Without using pivot tables or autofilters against the data page"

Why? In all honesty, your best bet is a helper column on the data page, but that might be verboten too.

"how many were finished in the same day"

A big question is: if finish date = start, does "days taken" = zero?

"array ... Very clever."

Indeed. And sometimes, very memory-hungry.

With some start dates in A2:A5 and some finish dates in B2:B5,

=SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$5>=$Q$10)*($B$2:$B$5<=$R$10))

returns number of tasks started on or after Q10 and finished on or before R10.

=SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$5>=$Q$10)*($B$2:$B$5<=$R$10)*($B$2:$B$5-$A$2:$A$5=0))

returns those "within" the dates that took "zero" days (finish = start).

=SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$5>=$Q$10)*($B$2:$B$5<=$R$10)*($B$2:$B$5-$A$2:$A$5=1))

returns those "within" the dates that took "one" day (finish = start + 1).

And so on.

Hey y'all Looking to replace Commodo as it been giving me monitoring for software Looking some headaches I was speaking Callendar a bit who provided some suggestions as well But I wonder what everyone else thinks based on the following criteria Software File Protection -Alerts if any unauthorised file is being executed aside from media files -Alerts if any unauthorised program is making file or registry changes -Alerts if any program is attempting to access a network -Integrated network real-time monitoring -Can block exempt executed files Looking for monitoring software programs -Permanent file deletion -File Monitoring ability to have certain files watched -Integrated installation monitor automatically detects install files and captures them -Integrated installation removal tool -Integrated installation option to make portable Hardware Protection -Hardware Service Change Detection -Hardware Integrity Monitoring detects faults errors -Integrated Latency Monitoring Logging -Latency Troubleshooting amp Alerting if it goes above the average threshold -Integrated I O real-time monitoring logging -I O Monitoring alerts if there is a large amount of writes or reads occurring Operating Protection -EventLog Alternative -EventLog Monitor reports issues as they happen and works to correct them -EventLog Filtering ability to remove logging of certain events -BootTime Monitor Logger -BootTime Troubleshooting amp Alerting if load times exceed average Essentially this one program is an all-in-one proactive alerting system then for cleanup there is CCleaner which is constantly improving Process Hacker for seeing what's going on And I know it is a lot to ask for so if you know more than one application that can do this and be nice on resources it'd be appreciated Thanks

A:Looking for monitoring software

I can't answer all your questions but here's what i know about. Anything that I personally use is marked with an asterisk.

Software/File Protection

-Alerts if any unauthorised file is being executed (aside from media files)

SecureAPlus Application Whitelisting * - need the No AV version. Checks any unsigned executable that attempts to run with the option to block. Plus a few more options. Also see: http://www.sevenforums.com/system-se...ml#post2932674

Note: I'm not using the current version.

VoodooShield *

Note: Pro version is cheap and much better than the free version. It does require a user to train the program and aslo reset the whitelist and retrain if a mistake is made in allowing something that should have been blocked.

Spy The Spy*

allows the user to specify directories to be monitored for the creation/ modification of executables.

-Alerts if any unauthorised program is making file or registry changes

MJRegWatcher* - real time registry protection.

-Alerts if any program is attempting to access a network

Well I use Threatfire for that. It's no longer available and there's no development or support but I can provide a download link if you want it.

-Integrated network real-time monitoring

I use Comodo CIS for that but also if you are using Windows Firewall take a look at:

Glasswire - Note: Only works with Windows Firewall

-Can block/exempt executed files/programs

See VoodooShield and SecureAplus (mentioned earlier)

Actually blocking specific files is tricky if they don't already exist on your machine and are legitimate. Maybe take a look at This Post.

Maybe take a look at: Smart Windows App Blocker

-Permanent file deletion

BlankAndSecure * - for folders or individual files.

SDelete* - to wipe free space and MFT free space (NTFS Drives only). I can help with command line usage.

-File Monitoring; ability to have certain files watched

Personally I only check for modified executables using Spy The Spy (mentioned earlier) and a few other files (like HOSTS file) using Threatfire.

-Integrated installation monitor automatically detects install files and captures them
-Integrated installation removal tool
-Integrated installation option to make portable

For that I was using Comodo Programs Manager as it does all of the above but it's no longer supported and it's stopped working on my machine. You could test it and see if it works for you. I've tried lots of replacements but none of them have been much good.

Hardware Protection:

-Hardware/Service Change Detection
-Hardware Integrity Monitoring, detects faults/errors
-Integrated Latency Monitoring/Logging
-Latency Troubleshooting&Alerting if it goes above the average threshold

No idea. Sorry.

-Integrated I/O real-time monitoring/logging
-I/O Monitoring alerts if there is a large amount of writes or reads occurring

Nothing that I've used has been any good.

Operating Protection

-EventLog Alternative

Windows Inspection Tool Set * - also great for monitoring on an as an when needed basis. Not for constant real-time monitoring as it would use too many resources.

-EventLog Monitor, reports issues as they happen and works to correct them
-EventLog Filtering, ability to remove logging of certain events

Don't know!

-BootTime Monitor/Logger

Currently i use Process Monitor if and when I get a slow boot issue. See:

How To Enable System Boot Time Logging using Process Monitor Tool*

-BootTime Troubleshooting&Alerting if load times exceed average

No Idea!

Hey guys, my network at work is growing and I could really use some software of which I can use to monitor other users. I have seen software that does exactly what I need but I never got the name of it.
What I would like to do, is view all the computers that are currently connected to the network and be able to see what they're doing.

I work at a training college and we want to stop users on games/harmful sites that kind of thing.

Any reccomendations, the cheaper the better?

I presume I'd have to have remote desktop links and they're all set up.

A:PC Monitoring Software

Im no expert at networking, but I have heard about software named wireshark mentioned a lot for network monitoring which captures packets and allows you to examine their contents. Hopefully someone can provide more information on this software for you.

If you are looking to simply block certain types of sites then you may wish to try OpenDNS, which is free for business and personal use. You can customize what you want to block (which includes proxy sites to help prevent people using workarounds) You can also add individual sites in a filter which will either allow or block access to that specific site. I used this software myself for my home network and it did a great job of blocking the kids from unsavory sites!

Wireshark >> http://www.wireshark.org/
OpenDNS >> http://www.opendns.com/

Hope this helps.

Can someone give me an idea on what type of software is available for monitoring a DSL Router? I would like to monitor what web sites are being accessed from inside our office. I'm new to this so I don't know where to look. I would need something for Windows 98 if possible.
Thanks for the help!

IS is a peer to peer or clent/server network? If it is a Client/Server are you using NT?

Hi Guys,

Please let me know if there is any software available (free/paid) which can hide itself in employee computer and track what the employee/user is doing on it. If Yes, can we record the session as well. Any suggestions for this type of monitoring software would be very helpful. Thanks.

Interesting problem and hope that someone can help Am running a small lt user network using Win k server with a domain All clients are XP Pro and using sharing can access requisite folders and files with no problem and can block domain users via sharing from accessing secure folders I have Vista Home Premium laptop that can access Windows server 2003 to VHP the domain shares with no problem VHP to Windows 2003 server except for the fact that there is one folder with xls VHP to Windows 2003 server files that the Vista user can see and can write VHP to Windows 2003 server a file to that folder as they have Full access to that folder However they can access one of the xls files just fine and can change it and so forth The other two xls files they receive quot Access denied quot All xls files are of the same type and created with no difference as they are of different locations within the organization Same xls file just different data The Vista user logs onto his laptop using the same username and password as his domain account Interesting sidelight as when he logs onto an XP Pro workstation using his credentials log onto the domain he receives the same error for the xls files I have deleted and recreated his domain account and also recreated the share and security permissions on the folder in question No one else has any issues with this Does anyone have any thoughts as to the cause The folder in question is a child folder of a parent folder that gives everyone Full access but does not inherit permissions TIA Saavik

Basically when you setup your server, you'll be pointing all of them to your domain which you can setup certain restrictions and controls for the entire domain. You'll also be able to restrict access to specific users and/or groups (Windows XP Pro also has this function, just you have to do the following: Open "My Computer", go to Tools -> Folder Options. Select the "View" tab and scroll to the bottom. Then, uncheck the "Simple File Sharing" at the very bottom). For more information on "CAL", click here.. You'll be able to leave the clients running XP Pro. In response to your licensing question, it depends on the software as many will require you to purchase "server" or "multi-user" licenses if you're running a server on the system. So, you'll need to read the licensing agreement for the particular software to see for sure. In response to contact information, etc...you'll be able to use Microsoft Outlook Exchange server (email) for setting up scheduling and contact lists. You will not need a new copy of Office as your current version should work nicely with Exchange. (There's a setting for "Microsoft Exchange Server" along with your pop3, etc choices.) What exactly do you mean by access to programs? Hosted on the server? You should just set up the programs on certain computers under the users login. If you really don't want a user to access a specific program, you can login to that client machine under administrator, select your "Security" tab, and remove their access to the specific directory (that the program is located in).

I think your looking for group policies - From any client that is logged on with a User ID that has domain admin rights open up mmc (start/run/mmc/enter). Then in the MMC editor go to File/Add-Remove Snap-in/Add button/Group Policy Object editor/ Then you can do local computer or browse for Default domain policy.

This deals with all the GPO's for the domain.

First of all, you should really keep your software in a safe place. You're playing with fire. Secondly, is there an I36 folder anywhere on the machine??

Hi,

I'm deciding about buying a dedicated server for webhosting.
One quick question, when is better to use windows server 2003 and when is better to use Linux?
In particular, I was told that in windows server 2003 I can use ASP and PHP without problems, but not in Linux.... is it true?
Can I have a technical explanation for this?

thanks

A:server windows 2003 ?

ASP is a Microsoft website language, and so I'd assume you need Microsoft's IIS webserver to use it (or that IIS would provide the best support for it). PHP should work on a Linux server without any trouble.

I have been asked buy my work to setup a webserver.

I am using windows server 2003.

I have added an application server for IIS but thats where my knowledge of server setup stops.

Just on the setup.
There is a switch with a static IP address.
Attached to the switch is 2 computers,
1 IP phone
1 Grandstream vopi gateway.

I am not really sure what i need to do to make the server a real server from an internal point of view and external...ie internet surfable point of view?

can anyone advise?

Ilan

A:Windows server 2003

These are from my notes when I've done this. I am showing a basic setup. You can do much more than this, but it would require a complete tutorial to identify everything.

* Assumed:
- Windows 2003 Server is installed, and has a static intranet [email protected]
- Your internet router is set to route port 80 to this box
- You have addressed any firewall issues along the way
- Your home page is named "Default.htm"
- You are not using virtual directories
- You want static page delivery (no applications / scripts / etc)

* Application Server Role Setup
- Start "Configure Your Server Wizard"
- Select "Application Server" and press "Next"
- Application Server Option screen
+ select "FrontPage Server Extensions"
+ select "Enable ASP.NET"
+ press "Next", then "Finish"

* Create web site
- rt-click on "Web Sites" / new / Web Site
- Web Site Description screen
+ Description --> <fill in>
- IP Address & Port screen
+ Enter IP Address --> "All Unassigned"
+ TCP port --> 80
+ Host header --> <leave blank>
- Web Site Home Directory screen
+ Path --> <folder holding your pages>
+ "Allow anonymous access" --> <allow>
- Web Site Access Permissions screen
+ "Read" --> select
+ "Run scripts" --> de-select
+ "Execute" --> de-select
+ "Write" --> de-select
+ "Browse" --> de-select
- rt-click on web site / Permissions
+ add "Everyone" for "Read & Exec" & "List Folder Contents" & "Read"

* Set security permissions on the www folders
- Everyone --> read
- {owner} --> full

* Create your home page in specified folder, with name "default.htm"

I hope this helps.

DO anyone know how to grant a user full Adminitrative rights to IIS Manager only. This server is part of a domain. Again I need to grant a user full control of IIS manager so they can see the website we are hosting. They really don't need to full admin rights but I to give this user enough access to view the settings for a website we are hosting on this server.
