I had 2 Dell Latitude C610 and between the 2 only one decent computer (one good hard drive and one good hard ware). So I loaded all the data onto the good hard drive and removed both hard drives and swapped them so all the good components were together. This was a silly thing to do.
Now when I start both up the option for start normally, safe mode etc. comes up and in all start up modes a blue screen appears and disappears before I can read it. Is this fixable by myself or have I ruined 2 perfectly OK computers in one foul swoop?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
This should be fixable, but may require some time... several steps...
For a 6-year old laptop... you gotta ask yourself... is it worth it?
Still, my guess, at this point, is that it should be fixable.
First step... Questions...
1. How did you determine that the drive was bad on one, and the "hardware" bad on the other...
Specifically what hardware was bad?
2. Do you have the restore cds (or original OS disks) that came with the computers?
If not, we may have problems unless you wish to purchase an xp pro from someplace like Micro Center.
(your original OS was xp pro, yes?)
If you have another os such as 2k that you could migrate, this too could be an option.
Step two... go into your bios, on both, and set up to boot first from the cd...
On the one that has the data you wish to save... turn it off and wait.
On the other... attempt to follow the prompts for a restore installation.
If it fails, swap the drives (again). and try the same on the other computer...
again saving the other drive (that has the data you want to save) for later.
What results exactly from following these steps?
I just purchased a 160gb "On the go" external hard drive whereby you can play multiple formats of movies, music etc without the need for a computer (ie through AV output cables) (more info on this item "http://cgi.ebay.com.au/160GB-HDD-OTG-MULTIMEDIA-PLAYER-HARD-DRIVE-CARD-READER_W0QQitemZ120113653702QQihZ002QQcategoryZ111503QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem").
I put a few small movies on it and it worked a treat as a stand-alone media player on the television. But then i loaded about 20gb worth of music and movies on it, turned it on again, and found myself waiting over 2hours for it to "read" the data, and even then it hadnt finished!!
I am wondering if any of you nice chaps have any ideas on fixing this annoying problem, it would be much appreciated!
Thanks for your time
Hey thanks in advance for your help I just installed a second hard drive into my PC because the external case i had it in wouldnt turn on all of a sudden and pc started doing something weird My PC was running SO SO SLOW I coudln t get My COmputer to open and it kept popping up to 2nd installed hard URGENT NEEDED! running HELP slow drive. To be honest, it doesn't sound good. I assume that the drive with the errors was the former external drive with your class assignments on it. Have you tried disconnecting the second drive and booting to Windows to see if it runs normally?

I have a 40 gig hard drive that was my master drive on a pentium system. I have tried to install the same hard drive in an AMD system, but while windows is loading, the computer resets itself. I thought it could be from my old windows xp home edition os, so I upgraded to pro. Once the upgrade was complete, it tried to boot windows, but the same problem occurs. If anyone has any idea why this is happening, please tell me how to fix it. Thanks.
Whenever you move a hard drive from one machine to another, unless the motherboards are the same, the best thing to do is to format the drive and re-install win XP anew.
I Hard Switching... You will have a very difficult time without a reformat and a reinstall.
Put the drive into another desktop jumpered as a slave, then drag and drop the files to the desktop drive, or burn them to disk. You may need to use recovery software for some programs, email files, etc., depending on what you use.
Then you will need a copy of windows or a windows recovery disk to reformat and perhaps re-partition the drive, then install Windows.
Part of the problem is the protective way that Microsoft blocks Windows when the hardware changes. The other part of the problem is that using a Recovery Disk set is not the same as using a full, unrestricted version of Windows which will often allow you to repair the disk to restore it to full use in a new computer... but that is costly.
A year ago I put in a second hard drive, and was never able to get the two to communicate, so today, I took out the old one, changed the new one to Master, and plugged it in. (expecting that it would just start windows as usual, without having to hit the F1 key)...
Well, it goes to the blue screen for programming.
What do I need to do? I have everything on that hard drive... operating system etc...
How do I get it to just take over as the master ?
When it was the slave, it didn't work the sound... hoping to fix that.
I am giving this system away, but want to fix it for them.
What kind of "communication" problem did you have between the two HDs?
There is an operating system on both drives?
I don't understand this: "When it was the slave, it didn't work the sound... hoping to fix that"
Do you have all the jumper settings correct?
I have a desktop with windows 8. I have a spare hard drive with windows 7.
Can I just switch out the w8 hard drive and put in the w7 hard drive or is there more steps to this?
Was the Windows 7 Installed on the Computer you want to switch the drives in?
Okay heres my deal, a friend of mine gave me their old PC thinking it would be something for me to play around with. In my current PC i'm running WIN XP with an intel cel. 1 processor. My friends PC has a Intel Pet 3 which i'd rather be using. Is there anyway to take my hard drive out of my system and put it in the other system? Friends system has WIN 98 OS, i would want to use my drive with XP. Is this possible? Is there any kind of info need to help me. thanks in advance!
P.S cant switch the CPU's diff slots
If you swap the hard drive to the other pc you will need to reinstall xp anyway.
i just bought a seagate 160Gb sata HD. what i can't figure out is how to boot off of it(specificly, how do i copy my OS on it) and how 2 make it my primary storage?
self explanitory... should figure it out yourself how to work it by the time you've downloaded the app.. otherwise post back...
Cables got mixed up, need some help. Have 3 slots, one says floppy, suppose that is for the floppy disk drive, second has secondary beside it, 3rd has primary beside it. I thought the hard drive cable goes into the primary, the cd rom into the secondary one. Something just not working right. Says invalid system disk if I start it w/out a floppy disk in it, even if I have the XP disk in the cd rom. When I try to install from the XP disk it says press any button to boot from cd then it does nothing. I know the cd rom is good. It is from my computer.
Also, what do I need to set cd & hard drive to(master/slave etc).
Since installing Windows 7 (build 7100) I have been having a strange issue. I have a system drive (C:, 80GB) and 2 identical 300 GB drives (D: and E: ) used to store media. All my drives are internal SATA drives.
Oddly, whenever I restart my computer the drive letters for D: and E: switch. So Media1, which was D:, becomes E:, and vice versa for Media2.
Obviously this is a problem. Has anyone else experienced it? Ideas? I've had this same setup in Windows Vista for over a year, no problems. No hardware was changed with the OS upgrade.
This is a windows feature whereby Windows 7 has a new boot loader that actually changes the C: drive (internally within the OS) so that the the OS being loaded is always on Drive C:.
Click on the start button and search for CMD. Run CMD as an administrator and enter BCDEDIT at the DOS prompt. This will display the boot options. They can be changed using the BCDEDIT program but is tricky - look at the examples (BCDEDIT /?). Good luck
I wanna switch out my current HD 7200 rpm to the WD raptor 10000 rpm. What do I have to do to get all the information from my old to new one thanks.
You can go to Back-up and Restore. In the upper left there will be a "create system image" link. Press that and put the image of your current drive on an external drive or DVDs.
You can then switch drives and use the "install DVD" or "repair CD" to restore the image to the new drive.
Here is a video on creating and restoring an image. Hope it helps.
Hello to all hardware experts out there.
I experience this boot problem from time to time, the PC wouldn't boot and there's this message on a black DOS prompt that says something about "NTLRD is missing" (correct me if I am wrong about the spelling).
Anyway, at first I would reformat the drive and reinstall the OS but later I found out that the hard drives somehow has switched (the slave drive becomes the primary boot device) so I would solve the problem by switching them back in the proper order in the BIOS setup and the PC would boot normally again.
What causes this problem? by the way my primary drive is SATA and my slave is the older ATA drive, does this have something to do with the problem? Thanks in advance.
this isnt a problem but more of a general question I m currently using a GB hard drive that s dying question switching drive Hard and have a newer GB hard drive on my desk across the room in an enclosure bare Hard drive switching question just got enclosure yesterday I received or hassled my best friend into giving me one of The Sims games for PC I installed and tried to play it but it kept freezing on me I m wondering if i can switch hard drives as i was planning play the game from the external hard drive to-be and if i can do that I might need more RAM that s no problem but will i need to reinstall The Sims or just let it collect dust until i can get a better laptop by the way yes i do realize that if playing from external hard drive i could lose information if the hard drive goes awry I think i can handle saying goodbye to The Smiths better than quot Psychology Term Paper quot if you know what i mean nbsp
this isnt a problem, but more of a general question. I'm currently using a 160GB hard drive that's dying, and have a newer 100GB hard drive on my desk across the room, in an enclosure (bare, just got enclosure yesterday).
I received (or hassled my best friend into giving me) one of The Sims games for PC. I installed and tried to play it, but it kept freezing on me. I;m wondering if i can switch hard drives (as i was planning), play the game from the external hard drive to-be, and if i can do that? I might need more RAM, that's no problem, but will i need to reinstall The Sims, or just let it collect dust until i can get a better laptop?

Wouldn't you be better replacing your dying 160GB with the 100GB drive in your laptop? Or is this what your trying to suggest you want to do?!?
If its 'dying', putting data onto another drive so your not effecting the capacity of the internal drive isn't going to help your problem.
I'd just use the 100GB drive, a fresh install of whatever OS, and then install Sims, but go lightly on other software and just keep essential stuff on it. I'm assuming your reason for asking is that your concerned with filling the drive up to capacity quickly?
There is no reason why study work, and games cant be mixed on the same drive, but make sure you keep regular backups. Memory sticks are cheap these days, even a 1GB would be more than enough to do a back up of your data after every study period.
I kept two 1GB memory sticks soley for backing up all my degree study work and materials, research, and well everything for my B.Eng Metallurgy degree. They were both identical, in case one failed. I didn't care for any other data on the laptop, just this stuff which is a nightmare to replace. Be wise though, I've had friends in there 3rd year lose all there data, including project work and with no backups your screwed!!
ok i am having a weaird problem

My HP G71 malfunctioned. Long story short, I put in an old Vista hard drive, reset the admin password using Linux, and finally got my computer to start up again.
Now it's saying there are no wireless networks available. When I click "diagnose this problem", a box pops up that says "There are driver or hardware problems with the network adapter Realtek RTL8101 Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) on this computer."
What does this mean? Is it something to do with drivers? Or is the hard drive just not compatible? Should I just buy a new hard drive?
Some more info: My HP G71 was running windows 7, before I swapped to a hard drive running Windows Vista service pack 1. The hard drive is from a Sony VAIO model PCG-713L. It's currently letting me install Vista service pack 2, which I guess must have already been downloaded to the hard drive.
Is it something to do with drivers? Or is the hard drive just not compatible? Should I just buy a new hard drive?Click to expand...
Yes,yes, and yes to buying a new hard drive. Odds of what your trying to do with that Vaio HD is next to impossible.
Any time the hardware of the computer is changed drastically in cases like this, you would in most cases need to do a full reload of windows. You're swapping drives into a completely different computer, meaning, new motherboard and cpu, in 99% of cases, you won't be able to boot normally doing this.
I have a hard drive and 2 different systems. I want to know if any damage can happen to the HDD if I use it on the other system just once.
It won't "damage" the hard drive, but it may not "work" as you expect.
What's on this hard drive? Windows? Just personal data like pictures or mp3s?
What are you trying to do?
I have transferred a Hard Drive into another computer and thought I had to re-install Windows (XP Home) - this I did.
In so doing I created another Folder - Windows2 - so as not to overwrite anything. I have a Windows folder as well.
I also still have a Windows98 Folder on this drive.
I cannot access the latest e-mails in the new configuration - or anything else for that matter - and know that I am going to have to reinstall all programs.
How and where do I find those missing e-mails, or can I uninstall this new version and revert to the old one?
This is a serious PANIC!

My current pc is packed in so going to replace it but my question is, is it a big issue switching my old hard drive into the new system with windows 7 on it. I can save a lot by not having to pay for windows again as they give that option but I just wanted to know how it goes really.
When I say old the drive is actually a new one I got a few months back.
Hey there Mats Effect
Not sure about overseas, but here in the US we have OEM and Retail versions of MS licensing for consumers.
OEM is what most folks end up with - You will see the sticker on the computer case, it has the Windows Key on it, and if you try and peel the sticker off it will *void the warranty*. OEM is licensed to stay with the 'computer' the sticker is on till the computer dies. Then the license is dead too. OEM is Non Transfereable in the USA. I imagine it's the same everywhere, but you should check.
Retail - That is a full price full working version of Windows that can go *Anywhere* and is good till the version is "End Of Life".
Upgrade - the grey area...
Which version do you have?
Moving the hard drive to a new system - Well, I don't have the answer to this - It used to be impossible, but I have heard that some particular software can do it.
With the many different drivers that are tied into the massive registry, I would be *very* skeptical that this can be pulled off reliably. I would assume a re-install would be the only way to tackle this job.
Unless someone comes along and tells us about new software you should really start planning on a reinstall.
my 6 year old pc short circuited and i lost the motherboard and graphic card, so i decided to buy a brand new computer (but without an OS on it). Is there a way to boot from my old hard drive (which has a genuine home version of windows 7), or is it a problem that all the BIOS are completely different now? can the motherboard cd with all the drivers on it help in some way?

I would try and simply plug the drive up boot to bios make sure it's recognized then reset BIOS to defaults save and reboot to windows and see if it can sort it itself out identifying the drivers as I presume you don't really have anything to lose data wise ??
It should in theory work without problem
Sorry what but Oh do? Windows do 10 I tomorrow no, switching drive, hard I'm couldn't write a proper question in such few words I'm all set up for the switch to Windows from Win but a thought just occurred to me not a great time either seeing it's last minute Since i'm leaving the country I'm going to remove my flash drive where the OS sits now and replace it with the old drive that used to be there This PC will remain here as is so what do I do Shoot question is still blank--sorry let me explain some Oh no, Windows 10 tomorrow but I'm switching hard drive, what do I do? more Oh no, Windows 10 tomorrow but I'm switching hard drive, what do I do? I assume that windows will install replacing the present one Oh no, Windows 10 tomorrow but I'm switching hard drive, what do I do? if this drive stays here BUT since I will removing the drive and replacing it with the previous one--same OS license since it wasn't isn't a new PC then the old one has the following things - - about a year's updates to do - - no 'Get windows quot icon sitting on the bottom left of my task bar So obviously I should NOT install windows on this present drive since it will be wiped clean once I remove it But how do I tell Microsoft this quot Dear microsoft btw it's not this drive that wants win it's another one and Since by the time I switch drives Inn will be out do I still need to do all the win updates and then switch to or what Sorry for all this confusion but hopefully you see where I'm coming from with this problem Thank you
Downloads for the free Windows 10 upgrade began this morning. Many people have it now and are ready for the upgrade tomorrow, the 29th.
Look for a folder C:\$Windows.~BT (you need to show hidden files and folders in Folder options to see this). If it's there look in the Sources folder for install.esd. If it's there then you are ready to upgrade tomorrow. You will get a notice to do so.
I believe what you could try is to copy the entire $Windows.~BT folder to a flash drive then put it on the old drive once it's fully updated.
An alternative would be to go ahead and do the upgrade tomorrow then clone the current drive to the old drive then swap drives.
I have a ultra mini optiplex that just recently started giving me trouble I noticed a couple days of days ago when the pc booted there was a message at start up that said quot system battery voltage is low quot and to press f to continue so i did and everything seem to with Hard 745 Issues Switching drive Optiplex and work fine until today The computer monitor screen just suddenly goes black and states quot Issues with Optiplex 745 and Switching Hard drive entering power save mode quot but the desktop is still on and I notice not long after the monitor goes off then i hear a loud fan noise louder than I have ever heard it run So I hard shut the pc down and when running the diagnostics I didnt get a error and the hard drive diagnostic passed I am thinking this maybe a power supply issue but i am not sure I have a optiplex ultra mini that is working so i took out the hard drive from the defective optiplex and install it into the optuplex but after doing this i notice the OS which is windows will not come up it starts to but then just goes to a quot Windows Recovery quot screen When I try running windows recovery that doesnt help When I look in the bios it shows it detecting the hard drive so i dont understand why it doesnt work Has anyone else had this issue Can I not simply take a hdd from an optiuplex and install into a nbsp
The OS will generally only run on the machine it was installed to. It may run if the chipset is exactly the same, but will need to be reactivated. If the OS is licensed to Dell (an OEM version of Windows), it cannot legally be used on any other machine.
It sounds like you have hardware problems.
It is not a laptop, right? If not, then you need to replace the battery.
I'd check the RAM, too.
Memory Testing (including bootable CD's and floppies):
MemScope (Floppy and CD images.)
Roadkil's RAM Test
Microsoft Memory Test (floppy or CD ISO image)
If you have enough memory sticks, you can test them by removing one at a time and see if the problem disappears.
If you are running Vista or 7, tap F8 on boot and choose the memory diagnostic, or if you can boot up, go to Start > Search and type:
Choose to run a memory diagnostic on next boot. Or, you can boot from the DVD and run it from there.
Okay...my computer died the other day (something in the motherboard, I presume), and a friend gave me another computer. Fantastic, yes, but I needed everything on my own hard drive. Stupidly, because I am eager and don't research things properly, I transferred my own hard drive to this new computer. Of course, Windows is now requesting reactivation. I have misplaced my cd (as usual), and I also read that I will probably have to buy another Windows license, since I technically have a new computer. I do, however, have the original hard drive and Windows cd. Since XP ties itself to the BIOS, if I put the original hard drive back in, can I proceed without problems? I am hoping that will work, and then I can just slave my hard drive in.
Try it, it should work.
I built a media centre rig not so long ago .. and I bought a nice little NEC drive to put in it.
I stupidly thought that technology has moved on enough for drive manufacturers to actually make quiet drives and have no excuse to make loud ones.
when reading CDs its bearable but on certain DVDs its insanely loud!
I assume its because its reading the DVD at full speed.
anyway can any body suggest a quiet DVD rw +/- (RAM) drive that i could replace it with or even a way for controlling the speed that it reads dvds?
thanks in advance
oh yea.. also does anyoen know of a way to unlock dvd drives so taht they can play multi regions ? ive tried anydvd but i didnt get on with it as it wouldnt play the whole DVD without having to restart the program
All the blank media sounds like this?
Did you just get this drive to build the system?
If you just did return it back to the store. Just like with an AC unit that makes bearing noises you can return for a quiet one..
I have an older PC with Windows 7 Ultimate, and I need to switch hard drives.
Will it still work if I download Windows 7 Ultimate and install it using this product key? Or Microsoft no longer support it, and it will not detect it?
Btw, is there any chance I can still upgrade to Windows 10?
As long as you have a valid product key then you should have no problems.
Windows 10, you had a year to do it, now it's too late unless you want to pay.

Problem: The LITE-ON drive is very slow when browsing with windows explorer. I don't have this issue with the DVD drive. It just started, something I did messed it up (but I have system restore off). When I do a "Right Click" > "AutoPlay" on the CD-ROM I get the following error message (see attached image)..
I purchased an gb ipod classic th with classic external drive- Ipod switching computers hard generation about a month ago I got a seagate expansion external hard drive to sync it with I had successfully loaded songs on my ipod before moving and therefore switching computers Since I still want to use the external hard drive and keep all of the music that is already on the ipod when I installed itunes on the new computer I selected for my ipod to sync with the same external hard drive I was expecting all my music to be Ipod classic with external hard drive- switching computers there but I can t find it on the hard drive anymore I am concerned that I lost the music from the hard drive but I know there is a way to fix this since all of the music is still on the ipod itself When I hook my ipod up Ipod classic with external hard drive- switching computers to the computer a message comes up saying how the ipod can only have one music library at a time and asking if I want to erase and sync or to start over with just the songs purchased from the itunes store Most all of my music collection so far is on CDs and I don t want to lose all of the music I already have on there My questions are By selecting it to sync with the external hard drive on the new computer does that mean I accidentally got rid of the music on the external hard drive since the ipod can only sync with one music library at a Ipod classic with external hard drive- switching computers time If so how do I copy the music still on my ipod back on to the external hard drive without losing it on the ipod And then how would I proceed after that to be able to edit my music library and sync without losing any of the music I already have on the ipod When I download itunes how do I get it to sync with the external hard drive without losing the music that is already on that hard drive Any answers or help is very much appreciated nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/ipod-classic-with-external-hard-drive-switching-computers.977520/

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.
You could try a startup repair.
Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times
You may need to run it three times with a reboot between each attempt.
I blow away a computer so I'm taking the Hard Drive out and putting it into another computer. From a AMD 3000 to a AMD 3800 and all it does in re-boot. I put in the XP CD and tried to do a repair but it didn't work or I didn't do it right. Can anyone help?

Cant just swap. There are different drivers, a different MBR on the drive and many other reasons. Can you partition it in two partitions and install clean on the other one?
ok i am useing a dell pentim 3....it has a 30 gig harddrive....i have a other computer here with a 160 gig harddrive the i dont use ...i want to take the 30 gig harddrive out of this dell i am useing and put the 160 gig one in my dell.....the 30 gig harddrive had windows xp pro on it and the 160 gig harddrive has windows xp home on it ...can u help or give me some tips please ....and i would like to be able to keep every thing on the harddrives .
Its not going to be easy, because the hardware is so different, If you do get the 160gb installed in the Dell, it most likely will not boot, because it will try to load drivers for the old motherboard, and probably will trash the XP home installation.
Another consideration is that the old Dell bios will not recognize properly that large 160gb hard drive, all bios in that day had a 128~137gb limit.
Sounds like a bad idea to me.
hello again all, i recently got a new desktop computer, an emachines model refurbished, and it has an 80 gig hard drive. id like to switch it with my old desktop, which im taking into work, which has a 160 gig hard drive. however, the 80 gig came partitioned, with a 2 gig drive that has a recovery file on it to reinstall windows and everything. is it possible to partition my 160 gig in a similar way, and copy everything on the 80 gig hard drive cleanly over? i like that recovery file in the small partition, and id like to keep it. the windows cds that came with the computer are full installation discs, not upgrades. will i likely encounter problems if i attempt this transfer?
I had two (2) HP laptop computers. One was with a genuine Vista version and the other was with a genuine Window 7 version. The Vista version hard disk broke down and the video card Window 7 computer broke down.
I have switch the hard disk putting the window 7 version in the vista computer and it is working but I always get a message that my version is not genuine and I can not receive upgrades.
What can be done to solve the problem?
Hello all So Drives Hard Switching I have had some issues with my Hard Drive recently and wanted to switch over to my second HD that I have on my computer I clean wiped the secondary HD I have and just wanted to boot my computer through it and begin installing my Windows Programs etc without having to back up my HD I am running right now For some reason I cant shake this malware I have and for a while now I wanted to switch HD s anyways so why not now MY only problem being that when Switching Hard Drives I go to boot through the disk on start up it just brings me Switching Hard Drives back to my HD I have now When I went through BIOS it only shows the one disk to boot through I am at a loss for what to do over just wiping the disk I have now and start fresh I am probably missing something so that is why I come here ANy help or advice would be very helpful Thanks nbsp
Could you provide more information as to how did you wipe the HDD you want to boot from? If it it not your main drive and you do not have an OS installed on it it is normal that it will not boot as there wouldn't be a system to boot.
What you could try as the simplest solution would be to install the hard drive you want to boot from in the SATA port of the one you used to boot from till now.
If you simply want to use the drive you can disconnect your main HDD install the one you would like to use and install on it. Afterwards, make sure the boot order in BIOS is set to boot from the drive. Once you are done with that you can connect the old drive and transfer any files you need.
If, however, you do not see the drive in BIOS that is not a good sign. Can you see it when it is connected as a secondary drive? Could you run a brand specific diagnostics test on your hard drives and post the SMART data here? Also, if have trouble seeing some of the drives you could try with different cables/ports.
As for your malware problem there is plenty of software that can help you with that – I can not offer any program in particular, however, a quick Google search should yield quite a few results.
As a side note, it is recommended that you always have a back up of your important data.
Keep me posted,
Well my roomates power supply blew(im pretty sure) and he cant turn on his comp. So he went out and bought a laptop. His computer is sitting in the laundry room, and after snagging his dvd drive, i thought that it would be a good diea to snag his hard drive also. It is 10x the size of my primary(i have another 100 gig SATA drive but my primary is a 20 gig IDE) I take out my ide HD and throw his in, but it restarts everytime it goes to load windows, it wont let me load in safe mode either. Im wondering what preperations i need to make before i can use this HD. Thanks in advance.
My computer has been getting noticeably slower over the past few days. It's started making that "working" noise that is loud and almost constant. After some research, I figure my primary hard drive (an 80gb dino) is headed for the graveyard. I have a second hard drive (Slightly newer 250gb that was bought used) that I keep all my non program files on, music, pictures, videos, etc. I've got about 115gb worth of data on that drive that I don't want to lose. My resources are limited to almost non-existent (I've got a small 16gb sd card to work with) and extra funds, well there are none of those. I'd like to move my OS to the second drive making it my primary, but I don't know if it can be done without losing all my other files.
What you want to do can be done, but it can get complicated and there is some level of risk of data loss.
The process would involve a 3rd party software program to resize the data partition on the 250GB drive to create adequate space for a new partition where you could then clone your failing drive or do a clean install of the OS. That's a thumbnail description of the process and options.
A good partition management program is Easeus Partition Master. The program is a free download and will do everything you need including the clone process.
Assuming the process is successful, you would then remove your old drive and install the 250GB drive in its place. If everything has been done correctly, your computer will boot normally.
You may want to seriously consider doing a clean install of the OS so you start with no trash buildup which is pretty normal with Windows. This would require re-installation of all software programs, 3rd party utilities and Windows updates (which can be a real time consumer). You would need either system install disks or have a recovery partition on your hard drive.
Please read through this post carefully and let us know firstly, what you would like to do and secondly, how you would like to do it given the alternatives I've noted.
So when I was building my computer, I was trying to be as cheap as possible and used an 80 GB drive for my system hard drive. But now I got a 1.5 TB harddrive which I would like to be my main drive, with XP and everything from my old drive on it. I have formatted the drive, but I cannot figure out how to copy my old 80 GB to the new 1.5 TB with it just being a disk image of the old one. Can anyone give me a complete list of how to copy these two disk images, preferably in a free way without buying software for my PC. Thanks alot...
P.S. I am actually a Mac guy, and on Macs there is a program that is part of the Utilities called Disk Utility, and does all this for you easily. Is there a program in windows that does this for you???
Use a program like Ghost or Acronis. These are clone software.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/switching-hard-drives-381766.html
lately have ran into too many times when placing 1 hd into a different mach it says invalid disk it is set up in bios ect but system wont reaconise it when trying to format this has happened to 4 other mach with different drives all will see them as slaves but not masters all bios's were different also I.E. award, ibm ,ami ect I have switched lots before this now cant seem to get much to work any help?
I have a Sony Vaio desktop - hard drive failed to the point computer will not even boot (missing HAL)
I cannibalized the HD from my old Dell Dimension. Activated XP (by phone) & it seems to work just fine.
Now, I need drivers for PCI controller, ethernet controller etc. Since I cannot get on the internet with this computer to automatically download the drivers how can I do it? Do I need Sony drivers or Dell? Or is this whole undertaking impossible? Sorry to be such an incompetant but this is all way over my head. I'm lost with anything more complicated that adding RAM.
So any help needs to be written in simplified version (for tech dummy)
Hi sb driver, and welcome to BleepingComputer. The drivers that you will need will be for the Sony, but we will need to know what model the Vaio is.Did you reinstall XP after installing the hard drive in the Sony? The reason that I ask is because if you did install the hdd without reinstalling XP there is a good chance that you will have problems. This article explains this.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/172809/switching-hard-drives/

A couple of days ago I got infected with pc security lab and after trying several things that didn't work I signed up here. I tried to follow your instructions but got stuck at step 2 ( I won't) go into all of that) and finally took a drastic step and switched the C and D drives in my computer and installed Xp on the other drive which was empty ( I had tried a repair/install and that didn't work)--so now I am setting up a "new" computer. Now my question is can the old C drive infect the new one. Should I remove the old C drive or wipe it and if so whats the best way to do that
clear the drive with dban
i lost my other post so what im doing is i get another computer in a week thats running a 80gig hard drive with xp pro and i want to put this hard drive 160gig xp and i have nero and norton ghost but what do i need just to switch hard drives.i was thinking just a copy of xp pro but im not sure pls help.....ok i just talked to a bestbuy geeksqaud person and they said all i need to do is switch drives and it should reconize it,is this true?
BIOS will recognize the HD however most likely it will not boot since the 160GB had XP installed/drivers installed on a different computer. You can't clone hard drives that have your OS installed and use it on different computers. They only work with identical computers. What you can do it is when your new computer comes home, put the 80GB into the computer (format it) containing your 160GB HD. Transfer all your data from the 160 to the 80. Now install the 160 into you new computer and re-install windows your OS.
ok first let me say my knowledge of computers is limited but not non-exsistant.
I am runing a custom computer and would like to switch out the 80 gig internal HDD with windows XP pro for a 40 gig internal with windows XP Home instaled on it the 40 gig has a partition C: drive and D: drive.
D: drive being the recovery. my understanding of computers is not good enoph for me to know how to do this and this is were i need help.
the system i would be instaling the 40 Gig drive on has these specs.
Processor--AMD athlon XP 2500+
Video Card--Nvidia GeForce 6200 256MB DDR2 TV DVI AGP
Power supply-450w rosewill model LC-A400 ATX
Xtreme Sound 7.1/24bit sound card
any help will be apreciated.
Why don't you just leave the 80GB drive in place and add the 40GB as extra storage. There is no need to have a separate "recovery" partition in a custom computer. OEM computers like HP, Gateway and Dell have recovery partitions to save money by not having to supply recovery CD's and extra hard drives...
It is never a good idea to place a hard drive with an Operating System already on it, in another computer...
In my windows XP I just installed a 2nd 500GB hard drive. I used EZmigration to image the old (160GB) hard drive. That has worked beautifully. The software will also allow me to enlarge the partition. The plan is to use the 500GB daily and switch the 160GB to storage.
Now, for the 25 cent question: How do I make the 500GB my primary drive that the system is booted from (in essence, my C drive)?
I realize this is basic stuff, but I've never had to do anything like this before.
Clone the 160 gb drive to the 500 gb drive, then unplug the 160 gb and boot up. The you can attach the second drive to another sata port and format and partition it in Disk Management. (Right click My Computer, choose "manage" then "disk management".)
Hi, I bought a larger internal hard drive for my laptop so I can partition it in 3, one for OS second Softwares and the third my daily business ( my Document). My question is, can I remove the existing hard drive and install the new one back and forth, until the new hard drive is finish. Any problem doing so? please advice.
Yes, you can with no problems. Just be careful that you don't jar it too much. You could take a hard drive from 3 years ago, pop it in and it will boot up as if it was never removed.
Hi, first post here.
I bought a new hard drive after my WD started giving massive errors indicating that it was failing. I bought a new drive and quickly imaged my WD onto my new Seagate. I transferred the image and rebooted, everything was fine, both drives showed up.
But then I don't know what I did, but I did something, because when I shut down my machine and removed my old WD (to send it in via RMA), my system wouldn't boot.
I don't know if I should make a different partition active? or is it physical, like I have to physically switch a cable or a jumper or something?
I provided a screen shot of my disks so maybe someone could help. It's been over a month and it's drivin me nutso.
I have the "PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable" problem on our HP Pavilion DV5000 which through tech help and research I've figured out is either the hard drive or it's controllers. I've been advised to switch drives, putting the possibly bad one in a good laptop and the good one in the possibly bad (my) laptop. I just want to know that this is safe and that there's no danger to the good drive (that'll come out of a friend's) - obviously I won't go ripping it out or dropping it. And will things just start up fine or will I have to mess about with the bios at all?
Usually that error is due to the machine trying to boot from the network rather than from the hard drive. Look in BIOS setup and change the boot order so that everything is before the PXE boot. It can't find the cable because there is none.
Probably the BIOS will be set to autodetect and the new drive should work just fine as soon as you put it in.
Im not sure if this belongs in this forum or the hardware forum so I will try here first I Switching drives hard with Vista recently ran into issues with my PC which after numerous tests and attempts to correct appears to be a motherboard issue - everything else seems to be fine This PC that just crapped out was actually a replacement for another PC Switching hard drives with Vista which Switching hard drives with Vista the HDD went bad on Now my question is on the older PC it was purchased in and came with Windows XP installed on it which was later upgraded to Windows Vista bit before it failed - nothing Switching hard drives with Vista was wrong it upgraded just fine This most recent PC came with Windows Vista -bit and the HDD is in perfect working order - it is now in an external case and all of the information is there just fine So my question is is it possible to simply put this HDD with Vista into the PC that has the bad HDD Would it boot Would it recognize the drive Both HDDs are SATA so there shouldnt be any connection issue I just want to know if its possible to just simply switch bootable hard drives and if so how to do it If this is not possible to just switch the HDDs what needs to be done to make this HDD work in the older PC Thanks in advance nbsp
If the connections are the same it will fit into your old case/computer. Your older PC would recognise the new drive no probiems, and essentially there would be no issues with setting it up to work...
However, if the hardware is different, it is likely to have a fit if you try and run it on your older computer. This is because your newer drive has software installed which it depends on to run with your new setup. Unless your old setup is identical in every respect (all of the hardware) then its probably not going to like having to boot up.
You can dual boot XP and Vista but to be honest I don't really see the point in doing it, unless you have very specific reasons for doing so.
If you have the media to restore Vista you could doing the following:
Fit the new drive to the old computer
Insert Vista disc and boot into setup
Do a full clean install of Vista
Firstly, you'd lose any data on the new disk, and secondly doing it this way would mean it customises the install to the configuration of hardware of the older computer.
I bought an eMachine a couple years back, now the warranty will not cover nothing that wrong with it. my question is can i switch the HD out of the emachine and put it in an old compaq i have. the compaq works but just has 4 GB HD in it.

Not sure if this belongs here or hardware I m also going to try and keep it clear because it s kind of confusing I have little experience with laptops and Windows I mainly use desktops with Windows XP I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite L with Windows Last week it wouldn t load windows and I looked up and found out if I hold when it starts I can get into reinstalling Windows built in which Solved: drives hard switching I did and seemed to work okay In the process of doing this and looking around at settings etc I saw an option to make a system restore disk so did that DVD this comes into it later It never seemed to work good after that and stopped loading windows again and message came on white text on black screen ERROR can t read disk disk failure Figured the HD was gone I tried putting in the system Solved: switching hard drives restore disk I had made went in Solved: switching hard drives boot sequence and set it to the D drive Solved: switching hard drives to start and same error message Skip ahead to yesterday my year old grandaughter has a laptop Compaq CQ- that got liquid in it months ago thanks to her year old brother and wouldn t power on I got the idea that maybe the HD in this was still good and I could put it in the Toshiba I had tried to work on a laptop once before a Dell but once I took it apart little connections unplugged and there was no way I could see of getting them plugged in again in the tiny space available but that s another topic I figured yesterday both laptops were broken so it was worth a try Turned out both of them were very simple to get at the HD on just remove covers on the bottom and both HDs were the same Toshiba brand Just one had a case on it and extra connector plug but I took that off and the one from the Compaq fit right in the Toshiba We turned it on and it loaded Windows grandaughter was so excited it had all her stuff on it now in my Toshiba She took it home and it won t go online Which is the problem Of course I didn t even think of this we were excited it worked The networt card drivers for the Toshiba she now has aren t on the HD I put in from the Compaq She still has it at her house but I think I can get it back tomorrow so wanted to find out what to do next as simple and direct as possible please I m old and easily confused LOL I have figured out I need drivers for network in the Toshiba looking on their site for the Satellite L there are different drivers My first plan- when I get the laptop back is to put Belac Advisor on a flash drive put it in the laptop run it and it might tell what network card is in it Then download the driver that seems to go with it onto the flash drive look in System Device and find - Will it say Network Card Or maybe add new hardware wizard when it asks for the driver it will be on the flash drive Or maybe just run it from the flash drive and it will auto put the driver in I woke up this morning thinking I made that system restore DVD a few days before the HD died on the Toshiba would that work The Toshiba goes on with the HD and Windows etc from the Compaq so if I put the DVD in and start it will it put the settings drivers I need for the Toshiba onto the HD now in it I don t want to mess it up Like putting the system I saved from the Toshiba HD on the one with Win etc from the Compaq Or maybe the Compaq has a way of reinstalling Windows like factory settings that would then pick up on the network card etc that needs drivers and put the right settings in That seems kind of drastic and maybe something simple My grandaughter said there was a Win reinstall for the Compaq CD that came with it but she doesn t know where it is and that would be reinstall what was on the Compaq and it is now in a Toshiba Satellite L I never got one with mine because it was built in I dont think they work on each other anyway I d have to buy a full install windows and start over Hope this isn t too confusing I think I make things more confusing because I don t really know but ... Hey TSG community,
So I have 2 PC's, both different parts and specs, windows 7 homeprem, and windows 7 pro.
What I am going to do is switch the hard drives from the two computers.
I think it should work like nothing changed shouldn't it? What are the things I should do in order for it run like it was before they we're switched? I should need the drivers right? I probably don't have the drivers CD's anymore so I guess I could just download them?
Thanks for the reply!
I have two elderly Compac Presario desktop computers. One is an SR1850NX the other is an SR 1750NX. Can I put the hard drive from the 1750 into the 1850 along with additional RAM from the 1750 without any type of convoluted hassle?
Yes and no. It looks like both systems use the same mb so it would boot. Now the no part. OEM type os ie windows that comes with a dell, hp, whatever, live and die with the original hardware. You cannot move an oem type os; it violates the eula.
Is it possible to take a hard drive out of one XP machine and put it in another? I must assume the bios would have to recognize the new HD or am I over simplifying the situation? Thanks.
Sure...a hard drive is a hard drive, nothing but a storage container. Storage containers are compatible with any system.
If your question is whether or not one can remove a hard drive reflecting a Windows install...move it to another system...and expect it to work properly...the answer is no, with the possible exception that the motherboard for the two systems are identical.
The settings and drivers for each motherboard/Windows install...are varied. That's why PA works...if recorded settings of components do not match the records maintained by PA...the system will not automatically activate, since there will be no match of documented components and Windows license.
I posted this problem before but didn t have the time to dedicate to the solution So I ll break it down with the developments First and foremost my original computer an older Compaq just Switching Drives Hard Trouble stopped booting I Trouble Switching Hard Drives think its a mobo issue and I didn t want to buy a new mobo for an older system so it made more sense to just change my hard drive from that Compaq system Trouble Switching Hard Drives over to a Dell System around the same age along with the RAM and whatnot When I plugged my hard drive into the primary drive slot the computer booted past the BIOS and then immediately went to a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top of the screen The computer would occasionally make a quot thinking quot noise but no progress past that point When the hard drive was plugged into the secondary drive slot the computer would complain that there was no drive in the primary slot and wouldn t boot past that problem Originally I thought maybe the primary slot wasn t functioning properly This can t be so because the BIOS recognized the type of drive connected in the primary as well as the size of the drive I assume this also rules out a problem with the hard drive itself It s also worth noting the hard drive was working correctly on the older system before the mobo malfunctioned The only quirk involved is that my hard drive has two Windows installations I had a virus that ravaged my system beyond recognition and instead of formatting and losing my files I setup XP in quot Windows quot on the same partition instead of Windows quot and then migrated my files over to the quot Windows quot I never got around to deleting the old XP folder I m not sure this quirk would effect the system s ability to detect my hard drive and at least attempt to boot from it but I ve been fooled before Additionally it s worth noting that I did install a CD-Drive from the old system to ensure that it worked as it did on the old system and the system I m migrating it to won t give me a boot from CD option I m not sure if the drive issue needs to be fixed before the boot from CD option will appear I m really stuck here and I m dead in the water without my old hard drive I know a lot of gurus here will say why not buy a new hard drive or a new mobo but this is a solution that should work I don t want to have to spend needlessly for a problem that should be fixed using parts I have right now Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated I may just have to cave to the side of me that doesn t want to have it diagnosed by a computer repair store I m usually pretty savvy with this sort of stuff but I ve had no luck nbsp

I've upgraded one of my machines to Windows I put in a new SSD and left the old Windows drive alone just unplugged I wanted to leave it intact in case I decided to downgrade I should mention that I did an upgrade install of Windows by installing Win to the SSD first The problem is this Today I realized that I needed to use something briefly from the Windows drive which did not work on Windows yet replacement program arrives on Monday I unplugged the Win drive and plugged in the Win drive and rebooted It would not boot up It got halfway into the colored fly-in gave a brief BSOD which I couldn't read and then rebooted It did this multiple times before I ran Startup Repair Startup Repair didn't help at all but it did tell me that there was a driver error I tried System Restore and safe mode and neither worked Safe mode just stalls at quot ClassPNP sys quot and then BSODs and reboots Nothing has changed in this machine hardware wise so I don't get why Causes Error Switching Hard Boot Disk there is now a driver error It's not like the motherboard would remember the Windows configuration Going back to Windows works fine Any ideas anyone I'm at a losshttp://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/386266-switching-hard-disk-causes-boot-error.html
I ll be the first to admit I m not the most computer literate so maybe someone can help me My old computer used as a backup at work stopped working the power supply apparently went out and fried the motherboard I ve purchased a used machine and it said the hard drive had been wiped clean no operating system I thought I could just switch the hard drive from my old machine which had Windows XP on it into the machine I purchased However when I start it up I get a warning that quot something apparently has changed quot and offers the choice of going into safe mode last good configuration or simply to restart windows No matter what choice it just loops back to the same Solved: drives problem Switching hard choices Now I have noticed it may not be anything but it just didn t look right Solved: Switching hard drives problem to me When it s going through the startup process I see quot Primary Master Disk HDD S M A R T Capacity Disabled quot Does that sound correct If not how do I change it to enabled nbsp
OK so I am trying to put a hard drive from one computer and use it in another as the main drive It runs XP Home edition but when I install the drive and turn the computer on windows will not load No mode will start safe w networking normal etc I was thinking it might be that the display drivers in the older computer wont work with the new xp wont hard drives start and Switching one but I can not load the drivers for the new computer onto the hard drive while it is still in the old computer because Switching hard drives and xp wont start it cant handle them The new computer isn t new technology by any standard and I figured windows would just load in safe mode using simple vga graphics or the such so I would then be able to have it scan for the new parts mobo on-board graphics cpu etc Any ideas on how I can get it to work I know there isn t a lot of technical information included but I can add if you reply what ya need I guess I m just used to not having issues when changing hardware and have never had windows not load before Thanks for any help or ideas old display drivers are for crt monitors and only goes up to x newer computer has Intel R G on-board nbsp

Sorry for my first post being a cry for help but I did something stupid and I m wondering if there s anything I can do to remedy it or if I m just screwed I installed Combofix on my laptop yesterday after a couple days of it totally freezing Combofix Installed I Stupidly and just generally being out of commission I d had Avast Anti-Virus I Stupidly Installed Combofix Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware installed but the virus seemed to disable them because whenever I d try to update the databases or do a scan a log would come back I Stupidly Installed Combofix saying everything was clean or the computer would just crash Then I noticed a suspect folder in my Documents titled quot HelpAssistant quot which had copies of all my files I tried re-naming and deleting this folder but it kept returning I also noticed I Stupidly Installed Combofix that quot HelpAssistant quot was now an administrative user and I disabled and removed it from the admin group but upon reboot it kept returning as an admin user I then elected to try Combofix I downloaded it from one of the links recommended by this site and followed the instructions I believe It said it would be rebooting but now it s continually restarting Is there anything I can do besides a reformat
My computer still just keeps restarting. I'm wondering, would something like "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" work? QUOTEUBCD4Win is a bootable recovery CD that contains software used for repairing, restoring, or diagnosing almost any computer problem. Our goal is to be the most complete and easy to use free computer diagnostic tool. Almost all software included in UBCD4Win are freeware utilities for Windows?. Some of the tools inlcuded are "free for personal use" copies so users need to respect these licenses.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/296858/i-stupidly-installed-combofix/

Oh also, something is preventing me from moving anything on my desktop. That's a new one for me.
I have a seagate External HDD (250GB - ST325060)
which was working fine for the past 2 years with no issues on WinXP.
Last week when i was working with that, the power connection cable attached to the HDD was removed accidently.
From then,i am trying to switch it on,but its not wswitching on, its not spinning. i changed the power outlets, checked the cables, but nothing is working out. i have lot of data in that HDD(around 200GB). Can you guys please help to make the HDD work again or to recover the data.
You'll need to open it up. There may be a small fuse that you can replace (though there may be some soldering involved).
You can also remove the drive from the case and attach it internally in your PC to recover data (with an adapter if it is a small drive).
In any case, unless there is a fuse cap externally that you can check, you'll need to remove the case.
I had some issues with the original hard drive in my pc, so I have installed a new larger internal hard drive alongside it (so now have 2 internal hd).
Due to these issues I would like to switch the installation of windows from the old to the new h/d, but keep the old one in place as extra storage in case I should need it.
Is there an easy way to do this, or what is the best way to ensure I keep all my data etc and can still use both drives?
I have windows 7.
How to clone your old SATA drive to a new SATA drive.
Solved How to Migrate OS to new Hard disk.
i was following a stepbystep by symantic to remove a worm. In regedit, i went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\ and ediited, as told the value to exe's . instead of 'exefile' i put what they told me in wrongly, obviously. !! I haven't backed up the registry coz im a damn fool, and now i can't run programs..... luckily I already had the browser open... ha ha!
is there any way to manually edit the registry. all i need to do is put back the 'exefile' value...
could someone please help me out
When windows boots up, tap the F8 key until you get to the Windows start up menu. Choose "Last Known Good Configuration" This might help.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f10/urgent-stupidly-editted-reg-can-no-longer-run-exes-12626.html
For several months now - maybe a year or so - my son's PC has been taking forever to boot It looks as though it boots fine but when we try to use it after it's booted up everything hesitates for ages before it does anything and it can take several minutes before it responds If it responds at all sometimes it just freezes and the only way to resolve this is to hold down the power button until it turns off Once the computer has Stupidly and freezing up boot slow been on for around minutes to an hour it seems to resolve itself to some extent - although it still sometimes runs slow Stupidly slow boot up and freezing and hesitates It's an old PC but it should still work better than it is I've tried to see what programmes open on start up and cancel any I thought weren't important but I'm not totally sure what is I don't know if things are running in the background or if it's infected somehow or what He is running bit Vista Home Premium with an AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor e GHz and GB RAM Please can you help Thanks Mick

title says it all.... i started a weekly backup at 18.45PM its now 21.55 and its only 40% done, its not exactly a huge amount of data, only 95GB
any help on this? im sorry but it shouldnt take 3 hours (and counting) to backup 95GB worth of data right? when i actually put it all on there (from my old HDD) the initial transfer took about half an hour....
oh and its going from 1 SATA HDD to another if it helps, actual transfer rate between the two normally evens out at about 70MB/s
any ideas how to speed it up?
Check the actual data that's being copied using "Resource monitor", if it's a lot of small files (text files, office documents, pictures, etc... small files) then the backup WILL take time, reading small files is hard for mechanical disk, even SSD has problems with that kind of workload...
Story OK i originally had a prob with my pc and had to give it to some techs from a store who's name i will not say b c my sis is the director they fixed the prob that i had but they made my recovery drive into my main drive everything is automatically thrown into it b c it supposedly speeds up the pc it did at first but now since that drive is so small GB it gets full slows down my pc inmensly and i end up needing to delete stuff which really pisses me off Question how can i make my big drive C into the drive that drive switching help the pc uses to save everything temp files downloads everything help switching drive while keeping my D as help switching drive my system operations recovery drive how it was when i got the pc P S i did try searching but i don't know any technical terms for this situation so it didn't help any help is appreciated thanks
There are some functions that would be hard to change from one drive to another. Temp files are often stored depending on where the OS is installed.
Downloads would have to be set in each programs individual settings. You can set your default download directory in IE, firefox, itunes, and almost every other program that downloads things.
The key thing is to choose where you install programs to. If you want to install a game, or other app (photoshop, antivirus, etc...) you have to manually set the drive you want to install it on. (change c:\ to d:\ or whatever your drive letters are).
I don't know of any easy way to do this, but there may be one out there somewhere.

The security team doesn't use HijackThis anymore. You need to read their new instructions found here and post here.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/help-stupidly-got-a-virus-from-running-exe-downloaded-from-www-thekeys-ws-407485.html

Long story short, i was dumb and downloaded a program I thought was safe (after scanning it), and it ended up being a pretty bad malware.
I turned my computer off, booted in safe mode, ran rogue killer and deleted 13 items. Then I ran Malwarebytes premium, deleted one suspicious item, then ran malwarebytes rootkit and found nothing.
I also ran FRST, and just wanted confirmation if I needed to fix anything.
Here is the FRST and Addition.txt down below.
Is there a fixlist.txt that I need or does everything appear to be in order?
I'm very dumb to have gotten into this situation, and would be grateful for any advice or help.
Thanks for your help. Basically I foolishly ran combo fix on a laptop I was just given(it was heavily crippled by spyware/malware) and all was well till it asked to restart and the computer froze on the shut down screen. So I held down the power button to shut it down and when I turned it on it just boots to the Dell logo over and over again. What have I done and is there anything I can do? I was planning on stripping everything and running a new copy of XP on it but the installation CD won't even boot. Here are a couple video's if that helps. BTW this is a XP Home Service pack 2 AMD Sempron Dell 1501 http://nathanrickaway.com/VID00053.AVIhttp://nathanrickaway.com/VID00055.AVI
What are those videos supposed to be? They are screensavers or something in Windows Media Player??http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/321388/hastilystupidly-used-combo-fix-on-laptop-and-now-it-is-crippled/

Hello UglyKid95, and welcome to Seven Forums.
Sorry, but no. Restore points are computer specific, and cannot be used on any other.
You might see if you may be able to boot into Safe Mode or enable the built-in Administrator account at boot to do the factory recovery.
Hope this helps,
This is a work laptop that I bring home my personal login has user admin privileges The computer is normally quot registered quot on the work domain but I was doing a VPN-related test for something else where I thought I needed to be off the network complicated to explain but not related to my current problem What I did specifically was - Right click on the My Computer icon to get to the Computer Name tab - unclicked the domain button and clicked the workgroup button for group HOME this required me to quot login quot with my work username password - got the message that I had to restart to take effect which I did A further issue is that we use encryption software Normally when I start up I get the name change - to can computer I Stupidly recover? made encryption screen at which point I login using that and it apparently is synched up with XP so I don t need to do the XP login also However now after I do the encryption Stupidly made change to computer name - can I recover? login I am getting the Windows XP login and my username password isn t recognized tried with the domain name and the HOME prefix also but nothing worked Any idea what the username password combo should be If nothing else I ll just give it to our help desk but I m hoping to solve it myself instead of looking like a doofus nbsp
Did you take it back to work and rejoin the domain?
Im new to the forum! Here's my problem!
The internet on my new Dell Inspiron N5110 (opened on 13th April 2012) is much slower than my internet on my 4-year-old Dell Inspiron 1525. Occasionally, it will run fast but then lose it again. Why is this and how do i solve this problem?
I have tried using a different internet browser (currently using Google Chrome) and disconnecting and reconnecting. I have run scans to check for viruses and I have run hardware checks. I have also tried running the same youtube video on my old and new laptops at the same time...my old laptop played the video straight away whilst my new one didnt play it at all!
And its Sunday so of course Dell Tech Support are not open!
I would really appreciate any help you could give me! Thanks!

I have three partitions on my hard drive. At boot up I used to be given a choice of partitions. This no longer happens for some reason. Is there any way switch partitions now?
So you had three seperate partitions, with three seperate OS's? You were given the option to choose which OS you wanted to load and now it doesnt allow you too? Sorry i just want to make sure im understanding your situation clearly.
My Drive C is almost filled up, so I want to transfer some of the files from Drive C to Drive D, is there a way I can do that and not changing the File location in the Documents and Music folders?

If you are talking about new programs, just put those directly on D. If you are talking about additional files for your Documents and Music folders, then you would need to put that folder over on D. You could just do a Copy and Paste of your Document file and that should take care of it.
I built my computer the other day and I had not planned to have an ssd at all but somehow ended up getting a gigabyte Samsung SSD It is very fast which is good for the boot and i just told myself i would put all programs on the HDD I did that Windows installation took up like gigs and since then I've from to Boot SSD Drive Switching HDD Help been watching the disk space slowly drop without even putting anything on it Help Switching Boot Drive from SSD to HDD So i need to switch the boot drive to the HDD i dont know how to do this Can i just copy and paste the entire ssd onto the HDD or do i need to install windows on Help Switching Boot Drive from SSD to HDD the HDD how exactly can i accomplish this I actually prefer this solution because this way i can have all my more used large programs on the ssd operate very quickly and just have to have a longer boot time If you are going to try and change my opinion Help Switching Boot Drive from SSD to HDD then do not post please because i am doing this
You are doing it backwards. The system must stay on the SSD and the user data and the programs have to go on the HDD (if they are big - probably games). Putting the OS on the HDD defeats the purpose of the SSD.
And no, you cannot just cpy/paste the system over. It is a bit more complicated.
So what I suggest. Uninstall all the big programs and reinstall them directing them to a folder on the HDD during installation time (the installers usually give you that option). But leave all the system files on the SSD.
For the user folders, you can change the default location to the HDD: User Folders - Change Default Location
You probably also want to delete the hiberfile. The command is powercfg -h off
I have had a Dell computer with Microsoft on it for a long time and have had everything on it connected to my Microsoft account and had many files on my OneDrive account I misunderstood the way in which OneDrive worked though and decided to download DropBox to back up my files I think DropBox uninstalled OneDrive when I downloaded it So I redownloaded OneDrive and when it got to the step where I could choose either quot Personal quot or quot school or business quot it would not let me click personal so I clicked school I then was not allowed to log on with my usual Microsoft account that had all of my One Switching Drive Accounts files Switching One Drive Accounts on it and had to open my school account so now I have no files on my OneDrive account I can still log on to my personal onedrive account online but when I go to quot This PC quot and look at my files there if I click on OneDrive it takes me to my school account I want to get rid of that so that everything is only connected to my personal account The rest of my computer is still connected to my personal Microsoft accounthttps://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/510b812f-e18b-4102-9478-73b4c33dde5b/switching-one-drive-accounts?forum=w8itproinstall
My old Dell laptop recently died but the hard drive and all the data including a licensed copy of Vista was fully salvageable so I have inserted that into a new desktop PC running a 30 day trial of Windows 7. I am looking to revert the running of the desktop from the trial version on the native hard drive to the copy of vista on the laptop drive I inserted.
I would wait for further instruction but 7 has just crashed due to a power cut and is now unable to run hence me needing to do this now.
Its probably an easy solution but I wanted some advice from people who know what they're doing before I mess up my nice shiny new computer.
What you are trying usually doesn't work, particularly with such different hardware as a laptop and desktop. The problem is that the Vista installation has drivers for the laptop and will not work in the new environment. At the very least you would need to do a repair install and for that you need an install disk.
I am assuming that the Vista OS was factory installed on the laptop. If that is the case the license is only valid on the hardware it was originally installed on and cannot be legally transferred to another computer.
Edit: Only if the OS on the laptop was installed with a retail disk could it be transferred as you wish.
I was told to repartition my hard drive, which I did. However, now my computer only wants to use the memory on my C drive, which it only has around 3 GB free, instead of using the 'New Volume' D drive, which is still empty. My computer believes I don't have memory and now I can't bring in more songs for my Itune because it will run out of memory when I know I have more free. I use Windows Vista on a Dell Inspirion E1505 computer. Can anyone help me?

the newer scsi run at 360 this means faster access
you will need a card that handles this speed plus the cables
price has come down some still very xpensive almost $2.00 USD a gb
SATA is cheaper and is almost as fast ,in most cases you will not see diff.
I think sata's run at 180 ( I dont use sata)
iede run at 133
warrentys on both are bout the same from 3 to 5 years
both support RAID most sata cards have this included
scsi cards don't you have to pay for that feature
if MB doesn't support sata you will need a card for it
only invest in scsi if you have critical systems and or run very intense app's
so if you want to upgrade and keep cost at min. go sata
if you are not up to task of boot issues with sata stick with iede 8mb cache 7200 rpm (I perfer Seagates)
