WD 500GB USB HD not appearing in Windows Explorer

Q: WD 500GB USB HD not appearing in Windows Explorer

MY WD 500GB USB HD just yesterday stopped working normally, it was working fine two days ago. When I connect the drive via USB it appears as a different drive letter for some reason Local Disk : I then disappears. My laptop makes two noises one that I've connected a device to the laptop then another noise which is when I disconnect a device. It makes this connection/disconnection noise when the HD is plugged in numerous times every minute or so.

The HD doesn't appear in windows explorer but appears in devices.

Very strange and unusual any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was playing Mass Effect earlier. Got off because of school, so i put it to sleep. When i returned home, I tried getting on steam. The path wasn't found, so I didn't think anything of it. Rebooted. Still no path, so i go to my slave HDD, and surprise! It wasn't there for some reason. I've looked for it in disk management; no where to be found. Ran seatools, no luck. I had around 300 GiGs on there.. please, someone tell me my HDD is just being a lazy ****.

I also turned off the laptop, took out the battery, and both master and slave drives for an hour. NOTHING.

EDIT: when i check disk management, it seems there is a drive of some sort on there, but it has no name.. It's blank. Nothing but *Status* has any information: "Healthy (OEM partition)." When i try to right click, the menu only has a "Help" tab.

A:500gb HDD SeaGate not appearing on laptop

Have you tried plugging the Seagate in to a different USB port? Used a different USB cable?

There might be damaged or corrupt system files preventing the Seagate from being recognized. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found, run the scan 3 times and reboot the computer after each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I just got a 1TB WD Blach HDD, and I plugged it in fine but it's not showing up in Computer. Going into Disk Management shows an unnamed HDD with that amount of space, so it's detecting it but not as a location that I can save things to. My last resort is using it as my sole HDD and re-downloading everything, but my intention was to use this new 1TB one with my original 350GB HDD. Any ideas?

A:HDD not appearing in Windows Explorer

Have you tried formatting it? (if it was empty, don't do it if it was full)

for some reasons, whenever i access my movie folder/s containing movie files (mostly are avi formats), the windows would just crash and the windows explorer error message will pop up.

at first i thought it might be some virus/malware infection that's causing this problem; so i reformatted my com(its been sometime since i did a reformat too). when i plugged in my thumbdrive which contain some movie files the system came up with the same ****** message.

what is the root that's causing this problem?

help would be very much appreciated.

Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of SDFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program but before extracting the files.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with SDFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to the clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

I found no solution in Windows Explorer's View menu, Options, and Help.

I would suspect it was due to me shutting down some 'process' or 'service' (2 weeks ago), but as far as I can see, all possibly-relevant processes and services are now running.

I was curious if some one might be able to help me please...I have a vaio vpcf121gx. A 500Gb hdd Western Digital hard drive and I picked up a Crucial MX200 ssd 500gb. I took the hdd out and put the ssd in. Tried to do a clean install with win7 pro 64 bit recovery disks. After loading all the disks right after it loads the registry it kept telling me that win 7 can not finish the installation due to new hardware being un compatible. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

A:I want to swap 500Gb hdd with a 500Gb sdd. Hardware not compatible???

How about just "cloning" you existing spinner hard drive to the SSD? Using "recovery media" isn't really a from-scratch install of Windows, even if it worked. It's a way to restore the exact factory image as your machine was initially delivered, with whatever came pre-installed from Sony. I don't know why it couldn't be used although it's obvious your new SSD is not the factory spinner.

But it's very easy to "clone" from HD to SSD, using a number of free products to do that... e.g. Macrium Reflect Free ("clone"), Partition Wizard 9 ("migrate OS to SSD/HD"), etc.

You would need to be able to see BOTH drives at the same time, so you should remove the SSD and reinstall the spinner back into the machine so that you can boot to it again and install the cloning product you wish to use.

Then you can connect the SSD temporarily as an external drive through an inexpensive USB 3.0 adapter like this one from Kingwin.

Then use the desired software product to "clone/migrate" from spinner to SSD. The advantage of this is that you'd immediately have your existing fully customized environment already living on the new SSD, and you wouldn't have to reinstall 3rd-party products or re-customize Windows. The SSD environment would immediately be ready-to-go.

Once the cloning if finished, now you can remove the spinner and install the SSD. I'd say you're almost done. Once you're up and running on the SSD, don't forget to adjust Windows settings for optimal performance. I don't know if Crucial provides special software to do this as Samsung does (with their Samsung Magician to tweak Windows for SSD).

When i turn on my pc its like this

and it's really bothering i have to use the task manager and sometimes it crashes don't know why it happened any idea?

A:Explorer not appearing

Perhaps your Explorer got corrupted. You could try this:

1. Backup the Registry
2. Open Task Manager
3. Then click File - New Task (Run).
4. Type regedit in the Run box and click OK.
5. Browse to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution.options
6. There might be sub-keys named explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe under this key. Those keys should not be listed under the Image File Execution.options registry key. Delete them entirely.
7. Close Registry Editor.
8. Reboot your computer.

Hope this helps. Source: Fileinspect Library

I recently reinstalled XP on my PC and within a few mintutes of being online to update my OS, it had been highjacked by a rougue programme. Basically, a search bar appears everytime I go to My Computer/Explorer. I use to the menus to hide it but it reappears when I close the window and re-open it.
Also, it seems to have generated a search location in IE that I can't change.

I've run Adaware and Spybot and don't pick up the programmes so maybe there's been changes to my registry. Does anyone know of a way I can get rid of these settings?

A:Explorer.exe appearing and disappearing need help plz.

I have seen similar issues. Try start->run: msconfig ->enter, select the startup tab
Uncheck unneeded items from the startup item column. Use www.sysinfo.org for reference.
Use the bottom search bar. Hopefully that works.
Also you can disable all of them and restart the pc just to see if it is a program running in the background that is causing it. DO NOT leave them all unchecked after or some features may stop working and security software will be disabled.
Good luck!

In my BIOS (which is a new American Megatrends GUI which I dislike with a passion) I show three physical drives.
I have adjusted the boot order for my primary (SATA), my second hard drive (IDE with an IDE to SATA convertor running through USB), and my CD.

When I go into Explorer, I see my Primary Drive and My CD (if a disk is in the carriage).

However, my second drive does NOT show in Explorer.

-------------------------------------------------
QUESTON:

How do I get my second drive to show in Explorer?

A:Second Hard Drive Not Appearing in Explorer

Well, try connecting the second hard drive externally and see if you may able to see it in Explorer. Also, keep your spy eye under Disk Management and see if the second hard drive is seen. If so, consider formatting it (do check your backup first) and see if that helps you access second hard drive in explorer.

The problem is I don't know anything about how to code batch files in order to accomplish this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
I'm not an expert at these things but this should work.

1) open a text file with notepad
2) enter your commands line by line. one command per line
3) save file with suffix .bat or .cmd
4) use file explorer to get to the file.
5) double click on it to see if it works (cmd / bat extensions should be interpreted by Windows as command type of stuff).
6) if it works right mouse vlick against the file in file explorer
7) set send to desktop (create short cut)
8) now you've got a desktop application when you want to run it - just double click the desktop short cut you created.

Note - to run by default in Administrator mode I think in the properties when you create the desktop shortcut you can specify somewhere run as a different user / administrator. I haven't done this for ages but from memory this should woerk --you don't need complex javascript or whatever.

Cheers
jimbo

A:Explorer.exe starts in priority high, prevents GUI from appearing.

As you can imagine, explorer.exe is a vital part of important things - like your desktop, icons, etc. Being such, it is a target for malicious software - sometimes the mechanism is so afflicted it just won't run until you run it from the Task Manager, and that can sometimes get it running to relieve the symptom of the problem but that does not fix the actual problem Malicious software (annoyingware as I call it) would love for you to think you have to reinstall XP to fix your problem, but I would rather outsmart it.If the executable itself is so afflicted or your system is just unusable you can replace explorer.exe from Task Manager, but it doesn't make sense to try to fix something on a system that has malicious software on it.Please perform the following to rule out obvious malicious software and tell us more about your system.Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/They can be uninstalled later if desired. To eliminate questions and guessing, please provide additional information about your system.Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information.

Hello,

I don't know if I'm in the right topic, but here goes....

I'm having problems unzipping downloaded files. After I've downloaded the file, I double-click on the file to unzip it and Internet Explorer keeping popping up and disappearing then popping up again and it doesn't stop doing this, so I'm forced to shut down. The only way to open the file is to extract it. Am I infected with something? Is there any way to fix this issue? Thanks for the help.

Does this happen with every unzipped file you download? Or just some? Are the files in question all of the same type (extension)?

A:Cannot install Windows on WD 500GB SATA hard drive!

You can try to change the SATA controller mode (in the BIOS) to IDE mode. Windows XP setup should continue without a problem. You could keep the mode set to SATA or AHCI but you then need to install the appropriate SATA/RAID drivers at the F6 prompt at the beginning of Windows Setup. However, you will need a floppy drive for that. If you don't have a floppy drive, you can try making a slipstream CD which is a Windows CD with the SATA/RAID drivers included. Google, Bing or whatever to find several guides on how to create a slipstream CD.

SATA or PATA????

Have you tried to remove it from the ext case and installed it into the computer...to check if any of the electronics in the external case failed.
could be something with the usb drivers in the new machine... might try unstalling from the device manager the usb controllers, maybe the composite device then turn the machine off and let windows reinstall 'em again and see if the drive is picked up.
At this point I'd be asking just how important is the data on this HD... I'd even go so far as see if I could put the HD into a friends machine,(or old 'puter), to see if it could be picked up???? Be sure and copy the data off the HD while you continue to trouble shoot the drive.
From experience..... the only drive I've not been able to finally detect ended up as a dead drive, "bfh"
luk to you.....

I have been having on going problems with a Seagate Free Agent go 500 GB external USB drive and pretty much any computer that it is attached to. This is the second drive that I have had after having the first one replaced I seem to be having the same or similar problems. Basically the drive was working fine and then it basically over night everything went wrong. When hooked up I cannot operate any software, remove the drive, check disk management or reboot the system. I cannot boot the system with the drive attached, it stalls. I cannot even safely remove the drive without forcing the computer to shut down with the power button, as soon as the drive is no longer attached all programs immediately respond like nothing ever happened. I have seen similar situations described on several different boards but no one seems to have any solutions. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Problems with Seagate Free Agent Go 500GB drive and Windows 7

Try a USB "Y" splitter where you pull the power for the drive off two USB ports rather than one and see if the problem continues.

Hello,
Sometimes files like the one bellow appear in Windows Explorer listed with my other files:

cc_20150317_091943.reg

I would like to know where they come from and what to do with them. I know that clicking on one of those will make a change to the registry.
Thanks for your help and have a good day.

A:Files for registry appearing in "my documents" of Win Explorer

This is to do with CCleaner. I believe these files are made when you try and fix the issues with the database and create's a backup for the database.

Hope this helps.

A:Windows 7 update fails and Windows not genuine message is appearing

That's a new set of errors to me!

Let's start with the basics....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply
Please download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Method 2)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and attach it to your reply.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

I just installed windows 7 on my computer (ultimate edition 64 bit) and my G drive ( a partition with 180GB) is not appearing! From the install i chose to do the clean install on my main partition (C drive).

Does anyone know what the problem could be, and how I can fix it???

Installed 10 about a month ago and still getting used to it and like it overall. However, once in a while when starting up the apps do not appear on the bottom. The shortcuts are there and are somewhat usuable. In additon, I can't get the computer to shut down normally as clicking on the windows icon creates no response. Have had to shut down via Task Manager or manual shutdown via power button. Restarting takes a while but it then comes back to normal. Any idea of why this is happening and what can be done to fix this? Don't want to spend money setting up an account with MS!!!

I wasn't entirely sure how best to describe the problem in the title but hopefully these pictures make the issue a bit more clear.

This is a picture of Firefox running on the desktop.

And one of Tweet Deck and MSN Messenger.

For some reason, about a month ago, this started happening and the bar seems to be stuck on the windows of every single application. It's like what happen when you hit the ALT key and it'll bring up he "File," "Edit," etc. Only in this case it's always there.

Hopefully somebody knows how to reset this.

As a few of you know I've been having problems with Windows 7 lately, and I had to go to a system restore point because my computer wouldn't start. Since then it's been okay, except for the fact that it's doing a few odd things, such as telling me I need to install these 7 (coincidence? :P) important updates, even though I've installed them a few different times before. I checked the updates history, but it says nothing about those 7 updates. Every time I install them or shutdown my computer and have it install them on it's own, I restart, and there it is again saying I need to install 7 important updates. Any help on the matter would be appreciated.

A:Windows 7 updates keep appearing?

I have had to clear pending updates before. Try booting in safe mode and look for a directory something like C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download. Delete them. Then go back and manage your updates from the Windows Update, selecting what you want, and showing history, as needs be.

I got prompted to download the windows update for the MS blaster issue the other night and even though I already installed it last month I installed this time anyway.

Why was it reposted on the MS website? Was it the same patch as released last July 16?
Then last night I got prompted to download the same patch again so I download and install it and then the next day it prompts me again to download the same patch.
Is this by design or something?

A:windows update re-appearing

HI, I doubt it is design. Looks like Update is not picking up that you have it. If you sure you have installed it correctly I would not bother installing it again and again. Peace Mal

Around 2 months ago I had a trojan by the name of si.exe. I managed to get rid of it pretty much 100% although whenever Windows loads up, it seems to still think that si.exe needs to be run, which is what the trojan was doing (loading when Windows started up).

I went into MSconfig but there's only 4 things ticked which load when Windows starts up and they're my AntiVirus and Firewall. Si.exe is not there, so I'm not sure why Windows seems to want to load it.

I'd like to prevent this error message from appearing every time I load up Windows, but I'm not sure how. You can see this message in the screenshot below.

I'd appreciate some help with this, thanks.

A:Why Does This Keep Appearing When Windows Loads Up?

Hi:

Most likely you are still infected. Something is now looking for that file is missing.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

Every time I click on a link within a page (so to get into emails, read articles, apply for jobs - any link at all necessary to navigate through pages), new tabs come up. They are mostly saying that I need to upgrade flash, occasionally I get pop ups too.
Flash is upgraded. Privacy settings are same as always have been, we have standard windows defender as we're advised not to put anything else on it.

This has only been happening since windows10 installed. We rebooted the PC which worked for a few days and then it started happening again. Tried to reboot again and it now won't do that either.

How do I stop this happening?

Hi,

I'm having the exact same symptoms as this user's post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic476497.html. I have tried avast, MBAM, and some other malware detection apps. The malware is never detected and I can't figure out where it's coming from. I've looked at the hosts file and it's fine. I couldn't find where the user's problem was fixed.
Some kind of javascript script is getting inserted into many of the web pages I browse. Strangely, it doesn't happen in some pages like Yahoo or Google search. I disable javascript in the browser and it doesn't show up. It happens in both IE and Firefox. I don't use other browsers. Please help me.

Thanks,
Patrick

Hello and Welcome. Please subscribe to this thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant Notification, then click Subscribe.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This type of infection allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files without your knowledge.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

You can read this: How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms diminish. Lack of symptoms does not always mean the job is complete.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by me or another helper at this forum.

Please also note...

This is the second TDSS rootkit infection on this machine in the matter of a few months....you must review the internet habits of all who access this machine.

I am using windows vista business. Every time I start my PC the login screen comes but after logging in, the screen goes blank forever. I use Ctrl+Alt+Del to start the task manager and start a new task, "explorer". The computer works fine after that. But can anyone tell me how to fix the problem.

A:Desktop not appearing in Windows Vista

Hi there,

In order to narrow down the cause of the issue more efficiently, let us
refer the following steps to reboot the computer with Clean Boot and
restart the computer to perform the test on the problematic computer.

Step: reboot with clean boot mode

1. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" in the open box to start
the System Configuration Utility.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box
and click Disable All (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
4. Restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window
appears, please check the box and click "OK".
5. Please check if the explorer.exe can be loaded normally in this mode.

Test:

1. Please create a new user account and then logon the problematic computer with the new user account to see if the issue still continues.

Thanks GamingJon

Hi,

Instead of trying to delete the svchost.exe from the c:\Windows\temp folder can you copy the file to the Desktop?

If you successfully copied the file then try to upload the file from the Desktop to www.virustotal.com and post the resulting URL into your topic.

Hello,

I'm having an issue with an OTF font that I recently purchased. I cannot see all of the characters of the font in Windows Font Viewer or in any other applications (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Office 2007, etc.). For example, the font contains 532 characters but I can only see about 100-200 of them. I've installed the font on a friend's computer, who is running Vista, and I can see the characters just fine. What could be the problem? Or, better yet, how can I fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

A:Random Windows Appearing in my Browsers

Hi MariaCatherine,

My name is OCD. I would be more than happy to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Copy and Paste logs directly into the reply window. DO NOT attach the logs unless specifically instructed to do so.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.

Please stay with this topic until I let you know that your system appears to be "All Clear"

Important: All tools MUST be run from the Desktop.

rkill

It is possible that the infection you are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. If this is the case, then you will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You can transfer the files via a CD/DVD, external drive, or USB flash drive.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Windows XP : Double click on the icon to run it.
Windows Vista, Windows 7 & 8 : Right click and select "Run as Administrator"
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

Click Scan
Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.

I am continually getting 'illegal operation' windows, on one, there is a little windows sign, folowed by Mtx
The text says 'This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program manager.'
The beginning of 'details' reads 'mtx caused on invalid page fault in module KRENEL 32.DLL at0177:bff9d709' followed by much more.
When I logged onto techguy and tried to access one of the posts pertaining to illegal operations, another 'illegal operation' window appeared, and closed me out

I am using Asus computer running Windows 8.1 x64.

Whenever I check for Windows update it would be there (see screenshot 1 attached), even though update history showed many successful installation (see screenshot 2 attached).

Now, it is affecting the update of IE version 11.0.9600.17126 to 11.0.9600.17207 and Adobe Flash Player version 14.0.0.125 to 11.0.9600.17207 (see screenshot 3 attached) which may cause the computer to be vulnerable to exploit attack upon triggering IE and/or Adobe Flash Player.

Any help soonest possible would be much appreciated.

Hi guys,

The Canon MX410 drivers keep on appearing even after successful install.

Here are my optional updates before installation:

Windows notifies of successful install:

However, when I check for updates again after...

...and it is back. Several attempts led to same results.

I also tried downloading the drivers from the official Canon PIXMA MX410 page and installing it (in hopes of "overriding" the Windows Updates), to which it notified as well of a successful install.

But upon running Windows Updates, the driver download is still there. Any suggestions?

I think you need to add those other folders to one of your shared libraries. For example, if you have "documents" shared, you can go to the folder you want to share (let's say it's d:\mystuff), single click on it, click include in library, then choose the library you want (in this example, documents).

The Windows user screen pops up about every 10 minutes and I have to click on my profile pic in order to return to the screen I was viewing.

I have no screen saver set up so that I can stay connected without this happening BUT I have no idea how to stop Windows from putting up this black screen every few minutes.

Please tell me how to make it stop.

Many thanks.

A:How to stop Windows User Screen from appearing

The 'black screen' is likely your display shutting off to save battery power. In your screen saver set up, check to see that 'On resume, display logon screen' is unchecked, as below:

i've installed windows 10 on linux before and i've never had any problems booting it (from what i remember, through UEFI boot sources). currently the windows 10 iso seems to be the only one that isn't appearing in UEFI; i installed peppermint from lubuntu using the same image disk writer on the same usb 30 minutes ago.
am i supposed to have some specific settings enabled/disabled in my bios to boot the windows install? secure boot is disabled and legacy boot is enabled.

A:windows 10 usb not appearing in UEFI boot sources

Why are you enabling legacy boot.

Surely you want eufi boot, and also make sure usb stick is set for a gpt formatted installation.

Also installing windows 10 after linux generally breaks the linux booting. You would have to mess around with grub etc.

Usual advice is to install windows 10 then linux.

Sometime back, I had a bunch of garbage that came through via programs like Kazaa. After uninstalling Kazaa, I ran Spybot S&D. At some point I also ran HijackThis, and posted the log to this forum for help.

Since that point, I have been getting question marks appearing in various Windows and application messages. For example, when I want to close Paint Shop Pro, and the program asks whether I want to save the picture I've been working on, I get a dialog box with question marks in it, where only the picture name appears in regular characters. This happens in virtually every program I run.

Today, I found myself unable to work with Word, but I couldn't read the error message for the same reason.

Do I need to re-install windows? Does anyone have a suggestion what might be causing the problem and how to fix it?

A:Windows XP Pro SP3: Garbage characters appearing in some apps

Problem solved. I guess I was on the right track originally.

When I changed the non-unicode language to Simplified Chinese, I forgot that it might be best to REINSTALL the malfunctioning app after making that change.

I realized this just now, acted accordingly, and now all is fine.

While looking at each startup location in each option in the tutorial below, check to see if you may have either Task Manager or taskmgr.exe is listed. If so, delete or disable it to hopefully stop it from runing at startup for you.

Every email that appears in my Windows mail (Windows 8.1) is duplicated. An online search for information is either outdated or applies to a different OS. I tried one suggestion which was to right-click All Mail and hide the folder (apparently unread and all mail are appearing at the same time?) but there isn't an option to hide the folder. My email account is gmail. It is annoying me intensely now so would love to solve it!

Hello!

Am using Windows Mail to access my Gmail account (using IMAP) - all has been working fine until a few days ago. Now when I send a message in Windows Mail it appears to have been sent twice when I check my gmail?

At the moment I have got IMAP set to save sent messages on the server. Someone told me that I shouldn't have this as gmail already saves them. But when I set it not to save sent messages on the server, I don't have a record of my sent messages in the 'Sent Mail' folder on Windows Mail??

If I send an email (using Windows Mail) it doesn't appear in the 'Sent Mail' folder. But it is the 'Sent Mail' folder in Gmail?

Please help!!

A:Messages sent from Windows Mail appearing twice in Gmail?

Lets try this to start. On the top of WM there is a tab tools. In tools there is sync all. Well, click on that. Then test, see what happens.

A:Windows Vista bad_pool_header BSOD keep appearing!

Hi. . .

I would be glad to help out here, but there is no point in looking at the mini kernel dumps produced by the BSODs because your system is not updated with Vista SP1.

Updating to Vista SP1 must be the priority here.

I see one item immediately that is definitely among the causes - Norton. Please get this awful product out of your system immediately. Do the following:
Run the Norton Removal Tool. Click on the Norton RT link in my signature area below and download/SAVE it to your desktop. Then go to desktop, close all windows, RIGHT-click on the NRT icon and select Run as Administrator. When complete - re-boot.

Now try to enter normal Windows normally (no SAFEMODE) as you won't be able to perform the next step -

The other item that I see is ESET - but I am not sure if this is just anti-virus or the Internet Security package. Regardless, un-install it for now - at least until Vista SP1 and all subsequent Windows Updates are in. I like and use ESET NOD32 anti-virus, but do not recommend the Internet Security. Be sure to re-boot after the un-install.

After both have been removed, reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type FirewallSettings.exe into the start search box | click on FirewallSettings.exe above | select the Advanced Tab | click on "Restore Defaults" | Click Apply (if hi-lighted) | Click OK

Now, go to Windows Updates and allow all in.

Please let me know how you make out.

Regards. . .

I have an old compaq computer with windows 2000 pro on it. Is there a way to prevent the password log on box from appearing at start up? This was an old computer that was used in a business and they all had passwords. It just comes up and says user is administrator and password is blank. If I hit enter it keeps going into windows. Thanks for any suggestions. I know how to do it in windows 98 and xp.

Use Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to Enable Automatic Logon
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To enable automatically logon, do the following: 1. Start Regedt32.exe, and then locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
2. Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName entry, type your user name, and then click OK.
3. Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, type your password, and then click OK.

NOTE: If the DefaultPassword value does not exist, follow these steps:

a. Click Add Value on the Edit menu.
b. In the Value Name box, type DefaultPassword, and then click REG_SZ for the Data Type
c. Type your password in the String box, and then save your changes.
Also, if no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0 (false), which disables the AutoAdminLogon feature.
4. Click Add Value on the Edit menu, enter AutoAdminLogon in the Value Name box, and then click REG_SZ for the Data Type.
5. Type 1 in the String box, and then save your changes.
6. Quit Regedt32.
7. Click Start, click Shutdown, and then click OK to turn off your computer.
8. Restart your computer and Windows. You are now able to log on automatically.
