Computer turns on but other hardware doesn't

Q: Computer turns on but other hardware doesn't

Computer with Windows xp professional turns on (fan and power light) but the other hardware: monitor, usb connections (usb harddrive, usb hub, mouse), Keyboard do not come on. I wonder if motherboard since there is also no sound? If got hit by surge or lightening would I still have power?
If it is Motherboard due to lightening can I just change out IT only?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

For the last month or so, every time I log off my account, the keyboard does not register at the Windows Log In screen. This makes it so I have to restart the computer and then it works fine.
There are three accounts on the computer, the casing has been half removed for the last 3 months, a DVD burner and driver recently installed 3 months ago and I am using a wireless off brand USB keyboard and mouse.
OS: Windows Xp Home Edition 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
As for the second part, the computer requires several restarts to boot up, sometimes up to twenty minutes of turning on and off to boot up. Only started doing this a week ago.

A:My Keyboard doesn't work, and the computer turns on but doesn't start.

It sounds like something is wrong with your Windows XP drivers. Something like that happened to me while building my computer, and when I boot up the keyboard did not work because my copy of windows XP was bad. You could try reinstalling windows XP, and It might work better, but I dont have a definite answer to your problem.

When I shutdown my computer my display turns off, so I am guessing that my graphics card shuts down, but nothing else shuts down, and I am forced to manually shutdown. I have tried to clear CMOS, as I have had this problem before and fixed it for a while by reverting back to default BIOS settings because I had an overclock, but it has come back again.

So. I turn my desktop on today, and it sits there, the main monitor light just blinks, my secondary monitor, after showing the MSI screen, just shows this

After that, nothing. Computer is still on but nothing happens. I was thinking maybe something is wrong with my primary monitor, so I type in my password and hit enter. no sounds. I unplug my primary monitor and restart. No change.

My computer was also unplugged all night. The only changes made yesterday was the installation of System tools. Would that screw my computer over?

Any advice, tips, suggestions, or explanations are all welcome. I use this computer for working, and I have a mountain of important information on it.

Now that doesn't seem like a big deal, but what I was experimenting with is having the computer turn on so I could use TeamViewer app on my phone to access my desktop when I'm not home. alright, so i just bought an ipod from a friend. assuming it works, here's what the problem is. i have itunes, i have the proper connection cables, i have an ipod version 2.2, i have usb 2 (i think, though i'm not 100% can i tell?) and my ipod is charged and functional.
when i plugged it into my computer (xp) for the first time, a little box appeared in the bootom right hand corner telling me that it detected new hardware and was installing the components. a second later, it was done. i looked in itunes and there was nothing. i looked in my computer, still nothing. i right clicked my computer, went to manage and saw the the ipod accessories thing was in fact there (i do'nt really know what that is, though) ... and i still can't get anything to work.

any advice?

thanks so much

So, I installed Vista yesterday and it was working like a charm and last night I turned the computer off.

I woke up this morning, pressed the power button, lights/fans/computer came on for a few seconds (3 seconds approximately) and then the computer just shut off instantly, then another 3 secondsish later it turned back on and did the same thing, and it keeps doing it.
The only way I could fix it was by unplugging the power cable and turning off the switch at the power socket, I thought it may was a one-off thing.

I left the computer on, got back about 6 hours later and the computer was off (nobody turned it off, no power blackouts etc), I turned it on and it did the same thing. So I had to turn it off at the power etc and it boots up fine and it works.

This wasn't happening until I installed Vista.

Thanks in advance.

A:Computer turns on for a few seconds then turns off [loop]

I just realised, I haven't been shutting the computer down, just been clicking the power button in the Start Menu (which I have just realised isn't shut down - hovered over it: Keeps your session in memory and puts the computer in a low-power state so that you can quickly resume working). I'm fair sure this is "Sleep" (Vista noob).
I just went into Power Options and saw that Sleep was set to 1 hour, so I'm assuming:

* Last night I put my computer into sleep
* Today it went into sleep by itself (after 1 hour)

Therefore it's a problem with the sleep mode?

Hey guys, I've built my computer and the motherboard (ASUS A7N8X Deluxe, 2.08 Athlon 2800+ chip) turns on and gives power to the hard drives, but the monitor doesn't turn on. The one problem that I can think of is that my motherboard doesn't recognize the video card I put in it and since the motherboard doesn't have an onboard VGA slot, I don't know how I can get the monitor to turn on. Any ideas?

A:Help: CPU turns on but monitor doesn't

doesn't have onboard VGA slot?? I'm not sure what was meant by that statement, so I'll just run throught some basic things to check and some additional info you need to provide.

What is the rating of the Powersupply you are using in the machine. Wattage as well as rail current ratings are important.
what are the full specs of the system?
Is the video card well seated in the AGP slot?
Is the monitor cable properly connected?

Without having that additional info, its difficult to go any further

okay so i am able to turn my computer on for a few seconds but then it automatically shuts itself off after a few seconds but the thing is after letting it sit for a couple seconds it says something about how the clocks on my processor have been overclocked too high and asks if it wants me to restore them, so i do that and then the computer works fine, but then when i turn it off and turn it back on it does the exact same thing until i get that message again.

any ideas on how i can fix this?

Try resetting the bios on the motherboard.

You can do this by opening up the computer and remove the battery and then reinstall. There are also a jump to do the samething, but you have to look at your motherboards manual /user guide to see where it's located.

I am running windows 7 x64
I have Comodo Internet security (antivirus and firewall)
Radeon 4850x2
And it recently started doing this.
I have the PC networked to a home server running windows server 2003, and recently changed my login on this pc to match the user I created on the windows 2003 server with which it logs in as. (This negated me having to log in twice- once into this PC and the second to a network share on the server.) I'm not sure if this is significant, but it seems like a networked pc would be less likely to sleep.
Things I've tried
- I set both display to turn off and pc to sleep after one minute then:
Unplugged all USB devices
Turned off all Network adapters
Picked up a book

One minute later the PC's display shut off, but still no sleep. Whats the deal?

OK, first of all no one [other than you] has any idea what we are attempting to fix/troubleshoot. Post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb, exact ram, exact video card [if used] exact pw supply, etc, etc. Note do not post 8gig of ram; post the exact brand and model# Do that for all of your parts.

If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, post the exact make and model# If you have a service tag# post that as well.

This problem has been going on already for about a month as far as I can recall The laptop turns on but the display is totally empty and Windows does not start at all This happens frequently after hibernation sleep What I do usually is I just turn the laptop off and turn it on again and the OS starts successfully but now it takes more than twice and it may be dangerous already to do such The laptop is still under warranty and I have it checked already at the store where I bought it The tech person did a few tweaks in the power settings It did work but after a little less than hrs the problem came back I am working as an architectural intern and most of the programs I use are heavy D drafting and D modeling softwares e g Autocad Sketchup and Lumion as well as Adobe Photoshop I use Sketchup very often Just mentioning this as it may have some bearing to the problem Thank you very much

Hello guys, I'm new in the forum and I hope that I can help to solve this problem. Today I cleaned up the dust off from a Hp pavillion a1600n and after I finished and put everything back together the computer turn on by itself each time I connect it to the power outlet and will make long beeps but doesn't display anything. I took the memory RAM and make sure that there was not dust on it but it didn't help. I also checked the fans and are working fine. The computer turns on even when I unplug the wires that connects it to the power button. I hope somebody can help me solve this problem, Thank you.

A:Solved: HP pavilion a1600n turns on but doesn't display

If the system is powering on with out the power button, You have wires crossed. Double check the manual and make sure you are putting the front cables on the right pins. You may find you have one crossed and so it is getting continuous power instead of being properly shorted.
From there double check that you have everything connected correctly. If you need to disconnect and start from scratch. As far as the video is concerned, are you connecting to a video card or to on board video. Either way, check to make sure the card is tight to the motherboard, and that the cable is screwed in tightly. Re-seat the memory and or any cables to the motherboard.

Hi Guys I need some help here My PC is screwed After reading a bunch of loading screen problems I saw that all of them were problems that occurred after the XP loading screen happens But after around yesterday night Monitor doesn't screen XP before black turns load loading and I got up and used the computer and when I was done I put the computer into standby mode and went back Monitor turns black and doesn't load before XP loading screen to bed A few hours later I woke up and still a bit sleepy I got up turned my computer back on and held the Power Button until it shut down all of which I did not turn on my monitor or move anything I was sleepy Then today when I started my computer the computer booted up as usual and I saw my ASUS loading screen and the the flashing s that happens when my computer loads Monitor turns black and doesn't load before XP loading screen when I start it up But then it just goes blank I tried restarting the computer Monitor turns black and doesn't load before XP loading screen and try again with the power button turn off which just turns off when I press it unlike when my computer is acting normally which takes a few seconds Can anyone help me I just hope my hard drive isn t fried or anything Thanks nbsp

A:Monitor turns black and doesn't load before XP loading screen

Could you explain this again please"?
"turned my computer back on and held the Power Button until it shut down, all of which I did not turn on my monitor or move anything"

Do you mean you pressed the power once then held it for 4 seconds? Do you normally turn your system OFF this way instead of using Start /Shut Down?

Sounds like this is a desktop, recommended practice is to turn the monitor ON then the system, after use, turn the system OFF then the monitor.

Standby, Suspend to RAM and Hibernation where windows is concerned, do not always work and are highly hardware and setup dependant.

I have an external DVD CDRW drive that keeps being added then removed added then removed. That is all that it does. You know how Windows XP does. It plays that little two tone sound each time a device is added or is so annoying. I cannot use the drive as it does not stay "added" long enough. I am stumped...I have never heard anything like it. Have you?

A:External DVD CDRW Drive turns off, turns on, turns off...etc.

Did the unit ship with drivers? ?
It also might be a cable issue. Inspect that cable or try a new one and or another USB port. If you have it on the front of the case try it on a rear USB port. I've seen machines where the front ports carried less power than the rear ones.

I'm asking this question because it's irritating that anytime I have a new device that is USB related, it almost never works on my laptop. On my old computer, upon entering a flash drive or a new ipod, the computer would just eventually say "Flash Drive is ready to use" or something similar. On this laptop, it always brings up the Found New Hardware Wizard. When I click "Install the software automatically" it normally searches and finds absolutely nothing. Is there a firewall problem here or something else? I've tried turning off all anti-spyware and firewalls but I still get nothing.

A:Found New Hardware Wizard doesn't do anything

The question is...have you installed any appropriate drivers for said devices...following the instructions for said device? Some require drivers to be installed beforehand, some don't.

If you are talking PnP USB devices, then it's probably a problem with your USB controllers, IMO.

I never see the New Hardware Wizard unless I'm installing a video card, etc. My experiences are typically that I see a notice that such device has been installed and I need to reboot the system to assure proper performance. I don't add a lot of hardware to my system.

I just bought a Rain Computer VFX, I have map a drive to my server here at work, but when I try to copy somewhat large files from the server, the card disconnects, I can fix it my disabling it and re-enabling it. I went though a support session with the people at rain and they are at a loss and they feel like it's related to the connection between my computer and the server. My computer is the only Windows 8 machine in the office. And the server is Windows 2003 server. I did update the drivers to the latest ones and the problem still exists

Anyone have any ideas?

If there is any additional information you need let me know.

I've just bought a VIA PCI IEEE 1394 Adapter (Firewire). I removed the old modem that came with the motherboard from the pci slot and inserted the new firewire adapter into its place. I made sure it was pushed firmly into the slot.

When i connected everything back up and started the computer, nothing happened. i waited a bit and still nothing. Any suggestions or explanations as to why windows won't detect my new hardware?

i have attached a dxdiag file with this post in case anyone needs to know my specs.

The new hardware could be defective but try going into the Add and Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any drivers or programs associated with the old modem and restart the PC. The DXDiag shows it thinks you still have the modem installed.

I just got an HP h8-1237c, which has an i5-2320 processor. I thought it was a good move, but I need to run other copies of windows in VirtualBox, which I can do fine in my old ASUS i5 computer. This one tells me I can't because I can't enable VT-x, as there's no place on the bios to do this. HP tech support was not helpful at all, and I even had to define virtualization to the tech.

Is there a way around this so I can install and run a 64 bit OS on this new PC, such as Windows 7, 64bit, or even 64 bit linux?

Thanks for the guidance in advance.

Hi everybody :

I've been looking at some hardware for my spare parts. I need some advice. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard, that uses an Intel Core i3 processor LGA 1155 , Corsair 2Gb (takes two chips) DDR3 PC10600 1333Mhz. I purchased all this around the same time.....July 2013. The computer is still functioning okay (a few "bumps" here and there). Usually, under, at least, fair conditions, how long SHOULD the memory last? Before it goes bad ? And the same question for the processor ? I'd like to be able to get some spare parts, just in case. In a last case scenario, I would probably have to do it all over again.......the MOBO, Processor and memory.

A:Computer Hardware [moved to Hardware>Building]

RAM and Processors don't wear out or fail due to time. RAM can fail for many reasons but if it is currently functioning there's no reason it won't continue to run forever. Things that could kill ram are failing power supply, voltage issues on the motherboard, power surges, static charges, etc. Processors are even more resilient. If the processor is run withing specified parameters it will run forever.

It's much more likely for a hard drive to fail. Motherboards can fail for many of the same reasons that RAM can fail. In all my time building and using computers, I've never had RAM fail or a CPU fail but I have had motherboards or components of the board fail and certainly hard drives have failed.

Is there a way exist to that hardware doesn't incorporate for device drivers How to manually incorporate or install a bunch of drivers on a Windows machine without going through Device Manager and without the hardware actually being installed Example I d like my Windows machine to have the device driver for a Broadcom and Intel NIC even though the machine only has an Intel network How to incorporate device drivers for hardware that doesn't exist adapter installed Likewise I d like to have an NVIDIA and Intel video card driver available even though I only have one installed Or have drivers for three different chipsets installed Or install all drivers for a specific HP computer and all drivers for a specific Dell computer Get the picture This way when I deploy my OS to a machine that has the custom hardware I have installed I no longer have to install the device drivers I tried installing it by running the exe or msi files from the manufacturer but some won't install because the hardware doesn't exist I also tried going through Device Manager and manually adding it but got the same results since there is no hardware to find I'm guessing there might be a way to manually copy the inf sys etc files to some System directory and then registering dll files manually--or something like that Please don t ask me why tell me it will screw up my system or not to do it or recommend an alternative solution I know exactly what I want and that s what I want Thanks

A:How to incorporate device drivers for hardware that doesn't exist

I'm not sure why you would want to do this, but as you found out, it can't be done in a conventional way since the hardware isn't installed. Basically since no such hardware exists, you can't install a driver for it.

I suppose you could try creating a driver repository, but I've no idea how to do such a thing.

Good luck.

I have a Toshiba Tecra M2 laptop with both a lan port and wireless lan connection as standard.
I am attempting to transfer my Windows XP home edition system onto this laptop, but after installation, I cannot connect to the internet.
The hardware manager shows only one network device, the 1394, but this doesn't seem to work. The wireless connection ( a PRO/Wireless 20GB I believe) doesn't show at all.
In order to check the hardware and eliminate the obvious such as the network switch on the front of the laptop, I have installed SUSE 11 and once installed, this allows both lan cable and wireless connection to the internet without problems.
Before I reformatted the laptop, it had windows 2000 and was able to use the 1394 port and a cable to connect to the internet.
I suspect that my installation of windows XP is incomplete, but I can't find anything that I have missed.
I'd be grateful if anyone has any clues...

A:Computer freezing entirely, odd pictures popping up on screen while computer turns on

Hello snow_yehti and welcome,

Unfortunately, there is nothing readily apparent in this log. We'll run a few tools and see if any malware is revealed.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the programOnce you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
Once in the Settings screen click on " Recommended actions" and then select " Quarantine".
Under "Reports"Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet. (Not Recommended for XP64).

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

*WARNING* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! or move them to a permanent location.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users
Click on the "Temporary Files" and uncheck the box for "Scan drives for file matching" if it's checked.
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Do NOT reboot/logoff when prompted.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:Lauch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions" **Please ensure it is set to Quarantine
Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
Close AVG Anti-Spyware.
**AVG Anti-Spyware is compatible with most AV and anti-spyware products, and the free version will continue to be useful as a second anti-malware scanner.

Hey, recently (today) the computer monitor will turn off and severe the connection between monitor and computer. That meaning the monitor doesnt show any thing on the screen (even though the computer is on) it will show what it usualy shows when the computer is turned off (red green blue, please check the power cable or computer is the message)

EXAMPLE: Im playing world of warcraft, boom screen goes blank and the monitor goes into its computer off state. I turn the monitor on and off but it doesnt do anything. The computer is still on and running.

Ohh yeah and i reseated the video card and switched the monitor, same thing is still happening.

A:Help! Computer monitor turns off and disconnects from computer for no reason.

If you have integrated video...try that and see if same thing. Just a thought. Could be the card. Reinstall video processor drivers. Give the machine a good general checkup. Does this happen when you're not playing a game? Or just when things are accelerated?

Hi, i have a compaq presarrio c300 and i bought spore for it. i started playing and it worked fine for a couple of days then when i hit the space stage it would sometimes the screen whould just turn blue with white wrighting on it for a split second and then restart.
i have the basic compaq presarrio c300 system it is a laptop (it is xp)

A:My computer turns off while playing a computer game on it

You need full memory installed... as your computer shares memory with video... Then you still may not have enough, depending on the requirements of the video graphics.

Ok, so I was playing a video game, and apparently my power supply was too little to handle to power requirements of my hardware, so anyway, it crashed, and now when I try to turn my computer on it stays at that first black screen that says "press delete to enter setup" and stays on the message "Locating IDE Drives" or some such...

Anyway, is there any saving my computer?

I have noticed recently that the main computer in my house is turning itself on. I tried shutting it down normally, and holding the power button to turn it off, but 5-10 minutes later, it's back on again. It's a Compaq, running windows XP. It's connected to a wireless router.

A:Computer Turns Itself On

Go into thew BIOS, and make sure that 'wake on lan' or something similar is disabled. Otherwise, everytime it gets a ping from the router, it will start up. Wake on lan is used to remotely start a machine, but can't be used these days really by the home type computer exactly because of that reason.

i have a computer i built myself, has a gigabyte MB, dual core prosseror, 256 graphics and the rest of the stuff has been working fine but when i started it the other day i got into windows the shut down, i restarted it and the it only lasted about 10secs. i left it alone for a while and then the same thing. i have changed the graphics card and the psu to no avail still the same problem although the annoying little buzzer doesnt make a noise anymore

A:Computer turns on then off

Check that the cpu heatsink is still properly attached. If that is a 775 cpu the stock heatsinks are VERY HARD to attach properly.

I've had my computer for a couple of months, and it's been great so far. However, the other day I removed the DVD drive because it was getting jammed. It might not be because of that, but now the PC keeps turning off after a few seconds of the loaded desktop. It boots fine, loads fine, the desktop comes up perfectly, but after a few seconds the mouse lags and then the computer reboots with no errors or anything. What could it be? It runs fine in safe mode.

A:Computer turns on and off

Check the power supply connections first

There are are four connections I'd look at first. There's a square connector with four wires and a clip, usually near the processor; and there's a big rectangular connector with 24 pins that I'd check. These are the power connectors.

After that, I would check the two connectors to the hard drive.

Still having problems after that? Then I would suspect something in the operating system is telling it to shut off.

A:my computer turns itself off

Hi and welcome to TSF.

Lets start off with this....

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! ( Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. You will use this later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >View >Folder Options tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot your system in Safe Mode (By repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears).

Open Hijack This and click on Scan. Check the following entries (make sure you do not miss any)

My computer turns off when ever it wants to. I have no control over it. sometimes it will run for 2 hours, then some days it runs for 10 minutes. Is updating the bios a possible fix?

What would you do in this situation?:

You leave your computer on all the time, and all this time you have had no problems. Starting last month you have found the computer off. This has happened about 10 times. Sometimes you must reach around the case and turn the power switch off and then on before the main boot-up button will work. A few times lately you have found Windows XP in a semi-frozen state (the screen is black and you can do no more than see and move the mouse pointer).

Perhaps I might have a virus? My only antivirus is AVG and my modem is NetZero dial-up. I have backed up my files - next step?

Hi im writing because my computer has beenm acting weird lately. About 3 days ago it just shut off out of no reason. ( i didnt click anything nor downloaded anything that might contain a virus) When i try to turn it on it only gets to the loading Windows part and then it shuts off by itself. About 3 seconds later it turns off by itself and will repeat this same process until i decide to turn it off. I tried turning it on on "safe mode" it loaded fine but after a few seconds with the desktop screen it shuts off and does the same thing. I dont know if its a hardware or software problem. can some one help please?

P.S this message is written by using another computer. not the one that is damaged.

Good morning I have an hp desktop about ish years old I left my computer on when I went to work the other day and when I came back it was stuck on the press f for bios escape etc screen So I turned it off back on nothing would come on I ve been reading posts online for the past days on ways to troubleshoot I tried resetting the bios with the battery method when I did else comes turns nothing on, Computer on that my computer would go to the unable to boot insert disc bla bla message I would then turn off my computer and now nothing would come back on I removed all Computer turns on, nothing else comes on the ram and left one stick same thing unable to boot screen on nd try nothing would turn on again not even mouse or keyboard - I have a gaming mouse with lights on the side so I know when Computer turns on, nothing else comes on it turns on I decided to unhook everything only things connected are pcu fans powersupply and one stick of ram I turned the pc off then on and now the mouse was coming on perfectly I tried that more times I decided to add the video card now nothing would turn on took the video card out still nothing comes on now Any help would be greatly appreciated it nbsp

A:Computer turns on, nothing else comes on

You have already tried basic troubleshooting. It is time to start swapping parts; start with swapping in a known good pw supply. You do not have to fully install the test unit; you can simply connect the atx, aux, and video pw [if used] Hit the ON button and see if the board will post. If it does, then shutdown and install a new pw supply. If it does not post, then you will need to swap board, cpu, etc one at a time until you find the failed part.

Hi all I have a problem, I don't know what is the matter, my computer turns itself suddenly off and doesn't go back on. If you keep trying to turn it on it gives a red light and a beep.Three short beeps and than pause then again three short beeps...etc It might go on again but then without warning the same thing.
We had it wiped clean, scanned constantly (when it is on) and took it to the shop twice to check and got on both occasions new memory.
You guessed it STILL the problem is there.
does anyone have an idea what the problem might be and hopefully also a solution!

thanx guys

I have recived a computer it runs on windows xp, it is a compaq pesario 6000. the person i recived it from was a smoker and when i turned the computer on smoke smell came out. so i was cleaning it and I couldn't get the fans clean so i replaced both fans and I opened up the power supply and cleaned it (but did not mess with parts inside). It worked when I first got it but after I was done cleaning it I turn it on and after a few seconds it turns off. I don't really have a clue what could be wrong besides it is not the power button sticking but any help would be appriciated.

A:Computer turns on then off

Carefully go over all the connections to the motherboard from the power supply. You could have disconnected something while cleaning. Also make sure all the fans especially the CPU fan, are connected

All of a sudden, my computer stopped working! It was functioning perfectly, and last saturday night I left on the whole night, and next day it was off. I pushed the on button and it turned on but thats it. No image, and it seemed not to be running the drives.
The Cd-Roms lights turn on, the fan runs but it seems to be everything running... I'm afraid it could be the CPU or even worse, the Motherboard. Does anyone have any idea of what is going on? I dont wanna take it to the Geek Squad because they will charge me $75 just to tell me what I am afraid the problem is!

A:Computer turns on but does not run

do you know how to reset cmos or bios
in my shop thats where I start after removing all unnecessary hardware
then check PSU
memory is next
it could be anything at this point
but if the hard drives don't even spin up
PSU likely cause then there's the board 2nd to PSU
had a double spike here and one machine's motherboard got shot down
all other parts worked
good luck and welcome to techspot best place on the net to fix ailing computer

Hello there I ve had a problem lately with my computer turning itself off at seemingly random intervals I ve had it suggested to me that my problem may be Mobo heat-related GPU or funky RAM Having looked at each of these issues in detail I cant single out a possible cause for my situation I can go between five minutes and two days without a turn-off its truly random My CPU AMD Athlon X Processor my Video card Nvidia GT Gigs of ram in four MB sticks My psu is a Dynex -Watt ATX All drivers up to date I was told by a friend that it sounds like graphics Computer turns self off card Computer turns self off failure However I have noticed no artifacts or other hints that my video card may be failing I investigated each ram stick and reseated it My GPU is running at a modest celsius under load And overall my case temperatures are well within safety shutoff limits The shutoffs seem very random in nature as mentioned and occur during anything from opening a Youtube video to a crash during Starcraft installation I ll be glad to give any more information as needed I ve had this problem for about two weeks now Thank you in advance nbsp

Have you had a look at the Event Viewer Logs? May be they can offer some clues.

I have recently moved I have two computers this one and my roommates My computer is fine His computer After moving we went to set up the computers before doing so we both cleaned out the inside of our computers by removing the side panel and carefully sucking on nothing.. but Computer turns out with vacuum the Computer turns on but nothing.. collected dust balls and stuff we have done this before as we both smoke I know to be careful and to make sure to not touch anything unless grounded After the cleaning I went and set up the network and our two computers All seemed to be fine my computer is great his computer started and was fine For whatever reason he restarted his computer After the restart all he gets is the big E splash screen it is an Emachine and below it the press lt F gt for bois press lt F gt and it just stays there He has a wireless keyboard so to try to press lt F gt or lt F gt I plugged in a regular keyboard and when I pressed lt F gt lt F gt nothing happened I of course restarted many times and kept getting the same screen and the keyboard still didn't work SO the next day without even turning it on since it had been doing the same for a day I unplugged everything and reconnected it all again just in case that might work Now I turn it on and I get nothing but black screen The computer turns on fans whirl etc but I get nothing on the screen I would try putting in the cd that came with it to restore windows but the cd drive has not worked for over a year Any suggestions I hate losing all the installed programs but could live with that since I have all important documents and other stuff backed up on externals if I could just save the computer and not have to buy another Just weird to me that it survived the move and the set up and was working then nothing neither of us fiddled with any settings or files he just simply restarted Any help would be appreciated I don't even know where to start since I get nothing and the cd drive won't work thanks James

A:Computer turns on but nothing..

You should never put a vacuum inside a computer. Chances are great that you have shorted something out. If you are lucky, you may just have unplugged the HDD or some other Hardware device. Open the case up, make sure you are grounded and make sure all plugs are plugged into the mobo and the devices. You can also go into the Bios. After starting your computer hit the Alt+Tab key to make the E splash screen go away to see the Black POST screen and then there should be a message to hit Del key or F2 to enter Setup. Hit that key to enter the Bios Setup and see if your HDD and CD rom drive are showing up there. If you no longer get the splash screen or the black POST screen, either something is not plugged in or you have shorted the Motherboard.
