Preferred Solution: Remotely Accessed Machine's Data can be Copied to Local Machine.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an old computer with 2 drives running on it, the C is a little wonky and only starts with XP cd installed under R support to get a C: in DOS. Can I use a printer cable to hook these 2 machines together to get a few files off the D: drive on the old machine from an XP machine? A network cable does not seem to work, I can't see the old machine in the DOS prompt.
Thanks for any help or pointers, and am not sure which forum was correct for this question.

hi shamal,

have you tried BARTPE? create an XP live CD using the bart pe builder and you can boot from CD drive of the machine where your wonky hard drive is. from there you can access your C: drive and copy your files on to another computer on the network or on to a USB device.

Hello all Just a remotely. on/off machine Logging a quick question I use Windows Remote Desktop connection to remotely use all Windows computers on my home network whenever necessary not simultaneously obviously This works flawlessly and I have no problems with the actual remote desktop process My question is sort of tricky to put into words Let's say I'm at machine A and machine B is sat showing the desktop screensaver etc If I access machine B from machine A it shows the logon screen on machine B while being accessed remotely However when I then end the remote session machine B stays at the logon Logging on/off a machine remotely. screen until the user account is clicked back into locally I am wondering if there is a way to make the machine carry on working as it was showing the desktop screensaver etc again automatically without having to click the user icon Pretty much to automatically click into the user account or to remove the need to This is obviously not a big deal but it kind of bugs me when the machines are sat at the logon screen and other people can't tell if I've finished the remote session or not Any feedback is appreciated Tom

A:Logging on/off a machine remotely.

Hm, never mind. I figured it out. On the remote machine, I entered "tscon.exe 1 /dest:console" into the cmd, and it did the trick. I then reconnected, and made a shortcut point to "%windir%\System32\tscon.exe 1 /dest:console", which makes the job much easier.

All three machines are behind a modem and router, so I don't know what to use as an IP addy for VNC Viewer.

Anyone have any idea how to do this?

Is it possible to setup a Windows XP Home machine as a host so that I can remotely connect to that machine?

I read an article on Microsoft's website about this, but it say's it works only for Windows XP Professional Edition as the host. Is that true, can I not have an XP Home edition machine as a host?

Anyway, what I would like to do is remotely connect to a Windows XP Home machine (host) (this machine does not have broadband, only a dialup internet connection) from a Windows XP Professional machine (remote) (this machine does have a broadband internet connection).

If this is possible what are the steps I need to take to get this working?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Remotely connect to Windows XP Home Edition Machine

There is a free open source program called RealVNC that works wonderful for remote access across the Internet and ona local network. The only thing with dial-up is you would need to have someone else at the "host" to connect it and tell you what the assigned IP address is for you to connect to it. And I don't think this is what your looking for.

I thought Microsoft Messenger allowed remote access. Is this not the case with Home Edition? I had a Windows 2000 machine that I set up as a RAS(Remote Access Server) that allowed me to dial my home phone, the PC modem would answer and establish a connection and then I could browse and access files on my network.

Again, not sure if Home Edition can do this (doubt it). You might have to upgrade to Professional.

The header checksum does not match the computed checksum. I did a search online and came up with a resolution and got into Windows Recovery Console and fixed the issue. Now though, I start the machine up and it goes to a different logon screen then I had and when I type in my password for any of the users on the machine it says Bret1 domain not available. Hi all,

I will cut straigh to the point! I am wondering if it's possible to set up a VPN to connect to a PC on another network so i can access the other machines on that network. e.g If I have an office with a router and 1 pc connected to the internet and 4 more machines conected to the router but not going out to the internet. Is it possible to connect to that machine via VPN so then it would be as if you were on that network to then be able to access the PC's on the network?

If you need any additional information please don't hesitate to ask!

A:VPN to access a local machine

Josh, welcome to the windows 7 forums.

One option which I use is a free vpn called Hamachi. It is owned by the logmein people but it does have a free version. It is encrypted and allows you to access the other machine using either Remote Desktop Program or another of the free programs like VNC. There is also the free version of Logmein.

search on hamachi and you should be able to see what it does. They do have a pay version but there is a free version.

A:Log onto local machine in Windows Vista

Have you tried right clicking the install.exe file and "run as Adminstrator" An irritating security feature of Vista. Although you are a user/Administrator, (I'm assuming that is the status you have?), you are not a power Adminstrator.
You do not say which Vista version you are using, but you can, in the advanced versions, also create a Power user account, as you may have been more used to in XP.
Go to Start/All Programs and right click the command prompt.
Type Control UserPasswords2.
Click Advanced.
Click Advanced again.
Select Users.
Select Administrator and untick the the box “Administrator is disabled”
Now log out and login as Administrator.

Did it ever worked that way?

Why running a VM in a VM? I believe it's a test.
You'll lose considerable performance that way and there's more chance for the machine to crash.

Running Hyper-V in a Windows host is the only way to get best results.

Try upgrading or running from Parallells build 9.0.24217 or otherwise run Hyper-V from bootcamp install.

I had a nasty trojan in my system (it ran it's own proxy server), and killed it with Malwarebytes. It seems to have also have disabled the ability to execute entries in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" As a temporary measure I have moved the entries to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run to get them to execute again. I would like to restore the ablity of the system to boot these start up entries from the default location. Any ideas as to how this might have happened and how to reverse it? I already tried creating a new version of the key By exporting the entries and deleting the key and merging the .reg file after checking it for any surprises just in case it was in the key itself. I also replaced winlogon.exe to be safe. This is a good one and I am out of ideas.

A:Local Machine Administrators Password?

The only legal way to do this is to re-install the OS. You do not need to be the local admin to join a computer or change the domain the computer is on. You just need to be an admin for the domain.
Is there a reason why the users log into the local machine? It kinda makes it pointless to have a domain.

A friend of mine had his laptop crashed, and the data on his hard drive was transferred to an external hard disk. He told me that he had some missing files before the machine crashed that he wanted to retrieve (i.e. deleted or erased by format). Is there a way to retrieve such files? If in the original hard disk, I know that there are some solutions for retrieving deleted files for instance. But, once transferred, can this also be done? Are they hidden somewhere on the external hard disk?

A:Retrieving data after machine crashes and data is transferred

If the files were deleted on the original then they would not have been transferred to the external drive. You can only retrieve deleted files from the original drive. You would need to get the laptop's hard drive and do a data recovery on it. There's tons of free software for that. However if the laptop's hard drive was reformatted then the chances of getting the data back are very slim to none.

Is it possible to create different policies on a local machine and somehow assign these policies to the groups logging in on this machine ? Seems to me that changing the group ploicy affects all users.

The machine is not on a network. It is a computer for test purposes in the field not having a domain server to handle the group policies.

I would to uninstall the ASP.NET Machine Account from the Local Account as it is causing me problems of deleting an anti-virus App. that I don't need or want as I already have an anti-virus App. that is already paid for. The question is would it be safe to uninstall it as on my old Windows XP there was no ASP.NET Machine Account in the Users Local Account. When I tried to delete or uninstall the App. I received the message that I needed the Administrators permission to delete. I am the Administrator so the ASP.NET Machine Account must be the other as it is password protected. I have a HP p6-2378 with Windows 8 64 bit.

A:I want uninstall the ASP.NET Machine Account from Local Acco...

I understand you want to remove the ASP .NET account.

This account is needed for some system functions, so I don't know that removing it would be the best option.  User account in Vista and up work a little differently than they did in XP.  To help control malware, the top level administrator account is disabled by default with a second level, with less privileges, gets the Administrator label for users to use.  Some programs, especially older programs, depend on this top level admin account that is disabled.

What is anti-virus are you trying to uninstall?  There may be a removal tool that is necessary to properly remove the program.

I would recommend trying to uninstall the app through the system admin account and then disabling the admin account once you are done.  This guide details how to enable and disable this account.  You could try launching the uninstaller with admin rights (right-click>run as administrator).

Let me know what happens.

A:hkey-local-machine entry removal

If you've uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security Suite and have restarted the computer and don't have ANYTHING else installed that's Kaspersky-related, do the following:

1. Go to the C:\Program Files folder.

If the Kaspersky folder still exists, delete it.

2. Do a search for Kaspersky.

Select and delete all files that are associated with it.

3. Restart the computer.

Doing this is a lot safer than poking around in the registry and accidentally deleting crucial registry keys.

Greetings all-

As all of you know by now SP2 makes your computer 'safer' from the outside world.

Well it also doesn't allow some of our bussiness apps to run correctly. We currently utilize Primavera's Expedition 9.1 (totally web based). We are running into problems with the use of ActiveX within Expedition. The program requires ActiveX to print and as we all know by now, SP2 basically disables AcitveX.

I was wondering if you all had any work arounds to getting ActiveX running within our browsers again that does not include shutting down the LMLZ. Perhaps excluding our Expedition site? One thing of note, the Expedition site is part of our local intranet.

Any suggestions or help you all can bring is most appreciative.

Purchased new computer (with latest Windows 10).  Installed Visual Studio 2015. Installed latest IIS. Right clicking xxx.aspx produced 'missing file' error 'Could not find the file C:\Users\donbe\OneDrive\Documents\Visual Studio 2015\Web
Found file vbc.exe somewhere in Program Files (x86) and copied to above folder.  Now I get 'Compiler Error Message: The compiler failed with error code -532462766.

Tried putting Program Files location in system search path.  Tried coping many .dll files to above folder.  Always get same error.
Testing on local machine is very useful.  Can this still be done?

This has me completely baffled I've never had a problem like this before and Windows accessable not machine. from local the 7 workgroup I've been at this game for a while If anyone has any ideas no matter how irrelevant they may Windows 7 workgroup not accessable from the local machine. seem please tell me I have PC's both running Windows Enterprise x The main PC has an internal drive and an external USB drive both of which have shares a plenty Until yesterday they worked fine If I type main-pc from the main-pc I can see all the shares but when i try and access them I get the message 'check the spelling of the name Otherwise there might be a problem with your network' The network diagnostic wizard doesn't find a problem If I type which is the main-pc ip into the run line it cannot access the workgroup browse list and comes back with the same message about checking the spelling The second PC can access the main PC shares without any problem at all including via Ip address When I ping the netbios name I am returned a valid IP Here's what I have done so far Reinstalled the network card tried another network card Reinstalled client for ms networks and file and printer sharing Completely disabled IPV using the DisabledComponents reg fix Ran NETSH resets on winsock and ip stack Reerun the network wizard renamed the workgroup changed the PC name fiddled with homegroup enabling disabling removed security software disabled the firewall disabled firewall through policy uninstalled all windows updates in the last week I've used the net view command and can confirm all workgroup services are running If I type net view I can see my PC but the problem isn't just accessing my PC I get exactly the same problem now when I try and access the second PC which works fine if your on it locally It could be the server service which the browser service requires I've paused it and my results don't change but not sure how to troubleshoot that I've had a go at some reg fixes and modified some security policys but have since put it all back the way it was Might be worth mentioning I have had a network bridge active between network cards but has never been an issue I've removed the bridge and tried in both cards seperatelly as well Thanks

Here's a bit more info if someone wouldn't mind having a look.

I can see the shares via netbios name but not IP, and I can't map it for some reason.

Bear in mind this is not a networked pc any more, I took it off.

1. What version of Windows are you using?
2. What anti virus are you using? I see you mention McAfee but only in that they detected it (unless you're saying that YOUR McAfee scanner found it).
3. Have you tried booting into safe mode?
4. If its a virus, you know you were infected. Is there a way for you to scan that drive for spyware? (either hook it up in another computer, hook it up as an external drive to another computer, or create a boot disk with spyware scanning on it such as UBCD)

have two laptops - one running Vista and one running XP. Both have IE 7 and Norton 360 installed. I've verified the settings for IE and Norton are the same on both machines.

On my Vista machine, which is my main computer, I cannot access certain sites, specifically and They appear to be loading, but never load. I've tried with both IE 7 and Firefox, but I get the same result. In addition, the daily Dilbert cartoon that I subscribe to is received in Outlook but the graphics do not display. The graphics are not visible in my Yahoo webmail either.

However, on my XP machine, everything works just problems.

Like I said, I've verified settings on both machines...I've even done a restore to a previous restore help. I've reset my router, disabled Norton, etc...everything I can think of and nothing has worked.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

G'day all! (first post here!! :P) this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

Thanx all!!

A:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

any help?

I recently got a 1.8GHz Celeron computer from a family member who bought a new computer, but they dropped it while bringing it over. When I started it up, it booted up pretty quickly. But when I'm actually in Windows, it runs as slowly as my old 1GHz machine and sometimes when opening things it has long delays. I thought it might just be Windows being old, so I did a clean install. But that didn't fix it. Now I think it might be one of the hard drives or my cd drives, since at the BIOS diagnostic screen it sometimes hangs at them. Other than scandisk, which didn't return anything, is there a way to find out where the bottleneck is occuring without having to spend money I don't have?

Well, it depends on which OS you have. If it's Vista or XP, then you may want to change the graphics settings so they're lower, because they consume memory.

I run from KJFK to KEWR I see a FPS improvement and this is saying a lot since around NYC I have a lot of heavy hitting FPS addons All of my heavy duty payware aircraft Aerosoft F PMDG MD CS MD VRS FA E run without a problem except one After updating the drivers Looking for ideas to try, graphic corruption, local machine issue? my ES v CX gets graphic corruption in the VC Below are two screenshots the top is with the corruption and the bottom is without The plane loads fine the corruption shows up only after I Looking for ideas to try, graphic corruption, local machine issue? toogle through all the views from the VC and when I get back to the VC I have this corruption The corruption can take up to minutes into a flight before it shows up It usually shows up when I am taxiing to a runway for takeoff Before I get the corruption I can toggle through the views times or more sometimes only two or three I fly in windowed mode all the time once I get the corruption I can toggle from windowed mode to full screen and the corruption is gone I can then toggle back to windowed mode and the corruption is still gone and will not come back for to minutes I can then clear it up by toggling into full screen go back to windowed and it is still gone Since this did not happen until I went to the drivers it would be logical that it has something to do with the drivers but all other aircraft and FSX in general have no problems with the drivers all problems are only with the ES v CX This is a quote from the developer's support site and this is the only answer they will supply no further support will be given for this issue quot This thread addresses the few who have a Graphics Card Driver Issue along with a possible Trusted dll Issue Both cases are Local Machine Settings Issues which we cannot address from afar We do suggest that you have a look at rolling back to previous video drivers and or and experiment a bit with drivers to solve what we know is local machine related quot I have uninstalled reinstalled the drivers no change I have uninstalled reinstalled the ES v CX no change Before I reinstalled the ES v CX I cleaned the registry with CCleaner and Glarysoft RR Does anyone have any idea what ES means by quot Both cases are Local Machine Settings Issues quot If anyone knows what they are talking about is there anything that I can try besides going back to the drivers and reverting back does not mean I will get rid of this issue If something has chanced in the local machine settings in the registry reverting back to the old drivers will not necessarily mean the registry problem will get fixed Does anyone know what they mean by quot Trusted dll Issue quot There was not a problem with the EX v CX dll's with the drivers so why would dll's be a problem with the drivers FMS in VC corrupted http img imageshack us img cx fms jpg FMS in VC not corrupted http img imageshack us img cx fms jpg

It is my understanding that if they return to their PC and see that an admin was logged in, they just needed to change it to their user name and password and everything's fine...?? YES or NO ???

Hi Masterscuba, welcome to sevenforums. Try setting up fixed ip settings in both your router(which probably has DHCP set) and the other machines. This could be caused by the DHCP server trying to "issue" ip addresses taht are already fixed in 1 machine(probably number 4)

I have only a basic understanding of networking and I am trying to rectify this by setting up a small network at home to play with. I have created a VM using VMware Player and installed a Red Hat image. Using putty, installed on my local Windows 7 OS, I am able to SSH to this VM. However, I am unable to putty to the Windows machine, instead getting a "Network error: Software caused connection abort" error. I saw a thread suggesting I set "Seconds between keepalives" to 5 seconds (default was 0 - i.e. off), but this had no effect.

Any thoughts on what I am missing? Probably something simple as I so new to this.
Please let me know if you need more information.

My problem seems to be the opposite of most people's - I added a Windows 7 laptop to my previously all-XP network without any trouble, simply enrolling the new machine in the existing Workgroup, and everything works fine.

Except for just one snag: from my XP machine I can see every single file on the Windows 7 machine, which raises privacy issues even within a family!

How do I stop this happening, and revert back to the situation I had before, where machines on the network could only see each other's shared folders?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:How do I stop my XP machine seeing every file on networked Windows 7 machine?

Well, a rough and dirty security fix would be to make sure that "Password Protected Sharing" in the Network and Sharing Center is set to "On." That way the files will be safe but still visible.

Are you logging into w7 with a password?

Create an account below Administrator level with a password and use that.

Theoretically w7 should not allow a drive to be shared, so check all the folders that show the "Share" symbol and set the Share to "Not Shared".

A:Solved: Random Ping Times from one Machine on Local Network

Make sure you have the latest correct networking driver. If it is an integrated adapter get the driver from the PC (or motherboard) manufacturer's web site. If that driver is already installed reinstall it anyhow in case the installed instance is corrupted.

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

A:The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is not registered on the local machine, Windwos 7

Hello, Are you running your application on x64 or x86 version of Windows? Also are you the developer that wrote the code for OCR.Form1 class? If so, I would suggest changing the Platform Target build option for your application to target x86 rather than Any CPU. Currently it appears that you are loading some assemblies out of the x64 GAC which would indicate that you are running x64 windows and Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 provider is not 64-bit compatible. To resolve this issue open the project in Visual Studio then: 1. From the solution explorer right-click your project then click Properties2. Click the Build tab3. Change Platform target from: Any CPU to x864. Re-build your solution

I was working on a windows laptop and wanted to transfer user files to the new laptop I pulled the drive from the win laptop plugged it into an open sata port on my windows bench machine which already contained the files to be transferred and booted without problem I assigned the windows drive a letter and opened the drive All the files of the win drive were visible I opened a directory off of the root created a new directory and copied the files No problem I opened some of the image files and all looked well I shut down the from Windows not copied windows 8 machine Files on 7 seen win box pulled the win drive and put it back in the laptop and it booted no problem When I went looking for the files they were no where to be found Win showed the quot used space quot as if the copy never happened Thinking I made an error on the copy I shut down the win laptop and pulled the drive plugged Files copied from Windows 7 machine not seen on windows 8 it back into the win box and booted The win boot detected quot file corruption quot on the volume in question and did some quot orphan quot recovering and a bunch of other stuff When it finally finished and booted all the files copied were in a quot Files copied from Windows 7 machine not seen on windows 8 found quot directory I took ownership and repeated Funny thing is that while the win showed the drive with the expected gb of data taking up space the windows showed the quot used space quot as if the data wasnt even there Can someone please explain why as I try to copy the files from the win drive converted to a usb external directly into the win laptop Probably a stupid question and must be a security thing because everything I've read is that the file system is consistent between win and win

A:Files copied from Windows 7 machine not seen on windows 8

That happens all the time when you access Win8 from Win7 or vice versa. I think it is a permission problem but I am not sure.

I suggest to copy the files from Windows 7 to an external drive and then get them from there into Windows 8. Much safer.

Hi all, I need to do the following: I have a driver installed in one machine (Sdo Sensor V2 version 10.0.10240.16384, Microsoft) that I need to install in another machine. I,m new to this development and deployment and am running into a strange problem. I developed an ACCESS db on a laptop. Everything seems ok, it works. I used the Package Wizard and created an installation package. When I installed it on another machine I am now getting errors in the deployment machine that I do not get in the development machine. I seems to be coding issues. Can't load data into field for example.

Why would I get these on the deployment machine and not the development machine? Am I unaware of some way to test the code in the deployment machine? Otherwise how do I solve the problem if I can't deplicate the error in the development machine where I can stop the code and see the problem. I feel like I am missing some trick or secret.

A:Errors in deployment machine not in development machine

Once it is deployed you need to run the connection command on the client to connect to the back end database. Are you using SQL server or all Access for the back end?

I have basically two questions.
1) does anyone know if Aloha Bob's PC Relocator Ultra can work with Vista?

2) Is anyone aware of anyproducts, preferably shareware or freeware that can migrate both data/settings and programs from Win98 to Vista Home Premium?

A:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

A:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

I have a network problem. My windows 7 machine is not detecting win xp machine whereas win xp machine is detecting win 7 machine.
They are in the same workgroup named Home. And the networking system is set to work. I have left the homegroup I was previously in. I enabled file sharing for devices that use 40 bit and 50 bit encryption.
On XP I have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP.
File sharing is enabled on both computers.
I think it's something obvious as both instalations on different computers are really fresh and both windows haven't been tampered with.

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

We cannot override domain policy via local policy, processing of multiple domain-linked GPOs is in the order specified by the administrator, on the Linked Group Policy Objects tab for the domain in GPMC. The GPO with the lowest link order is processed last,
and therefore has the highest precedence.Alex Zhao

I have just gotten a new machine running on Windows XP. I wish to move the slave drive with all my files and some programs that I had on my old machine running under windows 98 to the new machine.

My new machine recognizes that I have the slave drive now installed there (local Disk drive E) but I can not access any of the data on it. When i try to access the E drive I receive a message that the drive is not formatted and am asked if I want to format the drive which i don't if it will erase all my data.

I would appreciate any guidance on how to resolve this issue.

A:Moving slave drive with data onto a new XP machine

There may be errors in the drive's partition tables. XP is not very forgiving.

The best idea, before attempting to repair the drive and possibly losing your data, is to try to recover it and move it to another location. Then format the drive as requested.

Try some of these apps to recover the contents:

Free recovery applications:

1) DriveRescue
2) PCI File Recovery
3) Restoration
4) Free Undelete (NTFS only)
5) EasyRecovery Pro

I'm guessing this is the proper place to talk about it There is nothing worse than finding out that some of your data is missing after a PC repair tech tries to to work How data about on computer protect machine to on remove some malware viruses etc As a repair tech this is How to protect computer data on machine about to work on one of my utmost concern making sure that their files aren't lost Generally when I get a computer to my shop I do a full backup with Macrium Reflect it protects me in the event something goes very wrong that shouldn't have And generally I charge the customer for the time it takes me to setup the backup whether that means installing the software or pulling the drive and slaving it to the shop machine and running the imaging software from that and this time is only negligible and costs the customer not more than - but that's just only for handling the backup process and removing re-inserting the hard drive I also get calls to help a customer onsite so the rules of the job changes I don't have my shop machine with me of course and the customer is paying FULL for every second I am there even if I have to wait on the customer they are being billed for my time unlike at my shop I only charge for actual time that I am actually doing something with their computer so this presents a problem for them A backup can take - more or less can happen beyond - mins minutes depending on how fast that machine is and how much data they have Seeing as this is costly to the onsite customer they're going to be paying about - for the backup portion that doesn't even benefit the PC getting fixed So what would you do Give the customer an ultimatum A say that you can't work on their PC unless a backup is performed and there is an hourly charge to wait for it B Tell them that in order to do this part of the service it must be taken to the shop and they'll be billed at a lower rate or C they sign a waiver that says that they understand the risks and they elect not to have their data backed up on or offsite Now I'm not asking for legal advice because this isn't really the place for this but let's say customer elects option C I'm going to guess this really isn't the best legal option anyway they can still sue me for data loss and my waiver is useless to me not so much useless to the customer Anybody have experience in dealing with preventing unrecoverable data due to shop servicing And generally speaking not every PC onsite or in the shop require being backed up a customer wanted to make using her browser easier with direct links to her webpages that she frequented and so there was no need to do any data backup Also if I'm dealing with customers who have data that are linked to tangible value I don't think I'd think twice about giving them option C and before I'd touch the brains of the PC that PC is going to get a backup whether they like it or not and that unfortunately could also be a problem because that's an expense to their business so I don't know if that's even reasonable Of course I'd use drivesavers for these customers who have failing hard drives because the valuable data risk would be too great

I always, always create a System Restore Point. You'd have to do a lot of messing up to crash the machine and it not be able to boot from the System Repair Disc to restore a System Restore Point.

Welcome to WSF.

You can share files between the guest and the host operating systems by enabling shared folders.

However, I'm not quite sure how to do it so you might want to have a look in the WSF tutorials, go to Google or wait for one of our VM experts to come up with a solution.

A:Get data off Old Vista Hard Drive from XP Machine

The file permissions will have been set to allow access to your account on the Vista computer, and not to your XP one. You will have to edit the security settings.

The security tab isn't shown by default in XP, so go to tools > Folder options > view and uncheck the box "simple file sharing" to show it.

Then right click the Vista hard drive and click Properties. Go to the security tab.
You should be able to add your account and give it full permissions from there.

I was trying to troubleshoot a problem earlier today dealing with my new router and was tricked into using a company that i realize now is fraudulent.  I gave him remote access to my computer and he had access for close to 5 minutes.  Nothing he was doing seemed out of line until he accessed my computer management.  I terminated the call and access and removed the program named "teamviewer" that i had downloaded.  I still didn't feel safe so i did a system restore to three days ago.  That's when i noticed my programs not responding.  I use Avira antivirus.  Please help!

A:Certain Programs won't run after being remotely accessed

I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you.
Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us
Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs,  unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.

Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.

Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.

Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.
- Do NOT backup any unknown files ending in .exe, .com, .scr, .pif, and .bat since files of these types are more likely to be infected.NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.
Please do the following next:
Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
The application window will appear
Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
Click Yes to continue
A 'Finished!' message will appear
Click OK
DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.
Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.DDS.comDDS.pif
Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
Click on Start.
After the scan has finished, confirm the message with Ok.
DDS will automatically open the logfile.
You can find the logfile on your desktop as well.
Please post the content of that logfile with your next answer.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

I want to back up a 20GB website to my 500GB Lacie d2 Quadra external hard drive. Currently I run Time Machine on it to back up my macbook OS 10.5.6. I don't have enough room for the whole thing, so would have to do this in pieces. Can I do this without partitioning the hard drive? Can I do part of it in one backup, then another piece in another backup. I'm a beginner so steps would help, if I don't have the correct concept of this backup business. Thank you.

A:Backup of 20GB data files with Time Machine

7zip archive software can help you with this. It is available for Mac. You can also chop it up into small pieces.

The Mac I mean. HAR HAR HAR

Sorry...I really was referring to the file, but we PC fan boys tend to get carried away sometimes.

What you would do is download and install 7zip to your Mac and follow the onscreen instructions. It really is a pretty simple program to use.

If you're at all afraid you'll screw something up, just experiment with a few copies of small files you care nothing for until you master the process (it's EZ). Then you'll be 7zipping just about everything in sight. Just...if you set passwords, be sure to keep track of them.

Someone mistook eMachine's "system recovery" for XP's "system restore".

Barring the availability of a time machine, which data recovery program is better at recovering files from hard disk drive sectors which have been over written; Easy Recovery Professional, GetDataBack, or something else?

Thanks for your advice.

A:Has someone accessed my PC remotely and stolen my passwords?

I would definitely terminate the Paypal account and notify your bank if you bank onlineWe will do some scans and clean you up, but depending on how bad you've been compromised you might consider reinstalling your operating system-------------------------------------------------------------------------------The process of cleaning your computer may require temporarily disabliling some security programs. If you are using SpyBot Search and Destroy, please refer to Note 2 at the bottom of this page. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen:Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Note 2:-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes. To disable these programs, please view this topic: How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

My laptop is equipped with a wireless card which I only use when I am at work. At home I access the net via dialup. I diconnected and switched the phone wire to my desktop. When I returned to shut off my laptop I was horrified to see that I was connected to a nearby wireless network!!!

Have I been hijacked? How do I find out if I have been infected? How do I stop this? Should I install any freeware that will guard my computer from being remotely accessed? On startup i noticed a registry change which I denied .. might this have something to do with it?

Please help.

Hi all Newbie here to the forums I hope I m posting this to an appropriate forum but if I What's a 2000 XP way to safest the one? from "dead" "new" a data Windows to machine port m not my apologies Also my apologies in advance for the wall of text but I like to provide as much information as possible Anyway I was wondering if anyone can give me some advice regarding a fairly complex problem that led to the recent replacement of my PC and whether it s possible or advisable for me to try to grab files off the two hard drives from the old machine which eventually went BSOD due to a SYSTEM LICENSE VIOLATION error sorry I forgot to get the precise Stop Code Though that probably happened due to my own folly more on that in What's the safest way to port data from a "dead" Windows 2000 machine to a "new" XP one? a bit I can t rule out the possibility of malware leading up to this at this point Please note that both the quot dead quot Windows machine and the quot new quot XP one were donated by friends so I pretty much quot got what I paid for quot and had little choice in what was installed on them Also please note that the Windows machine quot died quot at the beginning of the year and I got the replacement XP machine a month later I ve only just now gotten around to posting about this The quot dead quot PC was running Windows on a Celeron mHz processor with MB of RAM The OS is on a GB HD and there is also a nearly full GB HD to store larger files both are ATA drives using IDE controllers I also used an external Western Digital MyBook GB USB HD I tried to swap it to the quot new quot XP machine and have run into a few problems getting it to work at all times for some reason at times the XP machine wants to treat it like a bootable local disk instead of removable storage Quite obviously it was ridiculously slow and even just running a few programs often caused Windows to have to increase virtual memory from k to the maximum of k Over time upgrades of certain programs Firefox SpyBot Search and Destroy and ZoneAlarm in particular increasingly bogged down this machine to the point where it became nigh unusable for normal activities at times Without going into too much detail if anyone wants the whole tl dr -- or quot too long didn t read quot -- saga of the problem s background please let me know I ll just say that through my own folly and self-surgery on the Windows machine I m the poster child for what all NOT to do Sweatdrops I rendered it unbootable even in Safe Mode I don t remember what the BSOD Stop Code was but it was a SYSTEM LICENSE VIOLATION error Before you ask why yes I was a GENIUS who mucked around with HiJack This and CCleaner etc to try to quot clean up quot the registry in an attempt to make the machine run faster P I learned quite a hard lesson from that Also the last thing I remember doing before that happened was that I was running a whole slew of on-demand anti-malware programs I hadn t used before to see if malware was the cause for the increased slowness and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware had just quarantined two registry keys that were apparently the old remnants of adware I had gotten rid of some time back that stupid Weatherbug IIRC Besides that very little else was detected other than a couple of trojans in programs I d downloaded ages ago but never installed and previous anti-virus anti-malware scans hadn t found anything in them either With all that said is there a safe way that I can access the contents of both of the old drives without possibly infecting my XP machine if either of them have malware that can spread to the new machine What I have in mind is to get an external hard drive enclosure and use that to copy needed files off each of the old hard drives one at a time However since I don t know for sure what actually triggered the BSOD in the first place I don t know how safe it is and I don t want to take unnecessary risks in case there was a worm or virus present d... A:What's the safest way to port data from a "dead" Windows 2000 machine to a "new" XP one?

Hi again.Erm, I know we're not supposed to bump our topics, and this is hardly a high priority one, but it has been nearly two weeks since I opened this one, and I would appreciate some advice as to what I should do in order to safely port my date from my now defunct Windows 2000 machine to my "new" XP one.I might as well take the opportunity to give additional information that I forgot last time around. The data that I want to retrieve from the "dead" machine mainly consists of documents, text files, chat logs, works in progress, images (such as pictures I scanned in, etc.), and emails that were stored on the machine within the past two years. (Most of the data I need that is from prior to 2008 had already been copied over to the external USB drive, which I do have limited access to.) I am not looking to back up any executable files from it, so that should allay any concerns that I might possibly want to retrieve files that could have been infected.Furthermore, when I said that I had tried anti-malware products that I hadn't used before, I meant that I was actually using those that I knew to be reputable. On the "dead" machine, I had been using F-Prot's on-demand virus scanner (the system was just too slow to run the real-time protection) until the end of last December, when I decided to give AVG Free a try. AVG found the Weatherbug and a few stray trojans in old files I never executed, and (IIRC) "Win32/Small" in the temp directory of an old Windows 98 backup I'd hung onto for at least five years (I don't have the AVG report available, but the info on the following McAfee link seems to be the closest to what it detected:; the file itself appeared to be related to my old HP printer and was over five years old, but again, without access to any data on my old machine, I can't tell for sure. And finally, this was the first time I had ever used Malwarebytes' Antimalware after getting frustrated with the slowness of Spybot; all MBAM detected were registry key remnants of the Weatherbug.I also would like to know if I need to open a new topic in the XP forum in regards to the external USB drive compatibility issue I've been having, or if I need to address it here in order to keep my number of open topics limited to one.Once again, thanks so much in advance, and I apologize for the lengthiness and complexity of this topic. *Sweatdrops*
