I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am having issues with Word and Outlook 2003. I just upgraded them from 2000 and now I am running into a couple of issues. Help!

Microsoft Word 2003

Microsoft Outlook 2003
- Can't highlight or select an area on my page with my mouse. I can use my keyboard, but that becomes quite annoying as you can imagine.
- Can't open Word document attachments only. I can open excel, pdf, etc..., but not Word.

I have restarted my pc, reinstalled office 2003, erased the profile, removed the 11.0\Word\Data registry and no luck. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For some reason, i am no longer able to open a TIF file and send it through my Outlook 2003. This is what my normal procedure was...

Open the file in .tif format
Go to file Send to
Select Mail Recipient (as attachment)

and my email program would open up with the attached document.

For some reason it no longer works. I select Send to Mail Recipient and it does nothing.

I checked my settings and nothing has changed. Can someone please help me??

Our office just got switched to outlook 2003. The majority of my job revolves around pictures that are emailed to me but now if they are embedded in the body of the email they come out as b/w. The people who still have lotus notes show them in color.

Anyone know of any way to change that? It usually happens with emails from aol and sbc.

Someone sent me an email with jpg attachments, let's say pic1.jpg, size 1MB. When I received it, I have 2 jpgs - pic1.jpg 1MB (of course), and another one with the same name but much smaller size pic1.jpg, 50KB. Sender told me that he only sent 1 jpg file.

Does anyone know why? and is there anything I can do to stop the smaller one come?

A:duplicate JPG attachments in Outlook 2003

The sender probably has a setting in their end to "break apart" attachments over s certain size (possibly 1 MB by the sound of it). So the file gets sent as multiples of that size, plus whats left over (20 kB in your case).

When any attachment is emailed, the file size is quite a lot larger in transit due to the transport method and HTML encoding (email systems were never originally designed for attachments so it is quite inefficient at doing it)

The sender needs to check out their settings to stop the splitting. The settings will be wholly dependent on what email client they use.

Is there any setting or any way in Outlook 2003 to have an attachment that is received in an email to automatically go back to the sender when he/she is sent a reply? We use Exchange Server. We have times here in our office where someone will send another employee an attached file such as a spreadsheet. The recepient will open it up from the Outlook mail screen, make a change to it and click File - Save. When you then send the reply to the email the attachment does not remain with it. The only way we have been able to get this to work is to open the attachment in Word or Excel, click File - Send to - Mail Recepient As Attachment. This takes extra time because the recepients name or names, have to be reinserted in the email box. Thanks in Advance.

A:Outlook 2003 Question About Attachments

Do a forward instead of a reply - then you only need to enter the email address. We have 2003 Outlook and an Exchange Server so it's the same type of system.

For the last two years I have had no problems using Office 2003 in Windows 7. Now the Outlook program will not open any files created by Office 2007 or 2010. It did before, but now comes up with a error message as it tries to install an unknown program - "an error occurred when sending the command to the application" and then shuts down. A further message then shows indicating that is not available. So I downloaded and installed this but it is still not found.
Any ideas?

It has only done this after the latest batch of Windows 7 update last week.

i have looked through the posts and can't see this one. If i have missed it and am asking a question already asnwered, i am sorry.

Outlook has started to add an attachment to an e-mail.
The e-mail doesn't show as having an atachment when you look in SENT items; you only see if if someone replies to my e-mail and it shows as an attachment.

Any suggestions PLEASE.

I have a user who cannot open attachments in Outlook 2003. When she tries to open the attachment she gets a message that the file type is unsupported and to right click and go into properties. I've had this problem before and there is a .dll file that I need to delete but in Office and let it re-create it but I cannot remember which one.

A:Outlook 2003 Problem with Attachments

Maybe you are referring to template. If you delete this, MS Word will recreate it at next start. and surely, there are numerous problems that can be solved this way. But I don't think Office would recreate any dll's if you delete them. is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

I have not had this problem until the past week or 10 days. If I send an attachment less than 1 MB it seems to through okay. If the attachment is over 1 MB, however, it looks like it was not sent but the recipient will tell me that they receive multiple copies of it. I have up to date NAV, Zone Alarm Pro (also up to date) installed. I have changed none of my send/receive or other Outlook options.

Feedback on what to look for will be most appreciated.

I have uninstalled ESET NOD32 (Version 4) and installed MS Security Essentials. Although I do not think this is the problem, I saw in the forums that Grisoft's AVG version 8.3 had this exact problem. I will know over the next couple of days if ESET has some issue that is solved with MS Security Essentials. By then my customer will have received enought group emails o know if they were received correctly. Once again, I do not think this is an issue but unless there is some problem with the Outlook profile, I am throwing a dart at the problem. BTW the exact same emails going to a group includes someone else in the office running WinXP ro, and they do not have a problem. ALso he (the customer) can get the email fine on his smart phone. Windows 7 OS is the odd man in this issue.

I have been using Outlook 2003 for several years. I never had any problems until 5-6 weeks ago when many recipients complained that they could not read pps attachments I sent to them.

I checked the original emails with the attachments and I could read them just fine. I sent one of those attachments to myself and I could not read it. The pps attachment was corrupt.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?

I work in IT and I've run into a problem I can't seem to solve myself. A client receives regular .msg attachments from a coworker, but he can't open them unless he first saves the .msg files to his HDD. If he trys to open the attachments directly from outlook, he receives the error "the messaging interface has returned an unknown error". No other attachments cause this problem, just .msg files. I have tried reinstalling Outlook but the problem still occurs. The .msg files he receives get forwarded to himself as well as about a dozen other employees, and the rest have no problem opening these attachments. Anyone have an idea what I can try here?

We have several end users who have reported the following problem:

While working in Excel, the user(s) will wish to send a file via email. They select File --> Send To --> Mail Recipient (as attachment) and get an error stating that Outlook was unable to open one or more attachments.

If the user saves the file locally (to their desktop or My Documents for example) and then creates a new email in Outlook, they are able to attach the file to the email (by choosing to insert attachment/clicking the paperclip) and send it in that way.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a reason? Is there a way to fix it? Our users much prefer the shortcut of sending excel worksheets as attachments from within the program.

All the PCs are running Windows XP Professional and Office 2003.

When I try to open an attachment in Outlook 2003 a dialog box opens called "Opening Mail Attachment" and provides a message as follows "You should only open attachments from a trustworthy source" The document name is then displayed and at the bottom of the box there is a option to "tick off" "always ask before opening this type of file" however this is "greyed out" and the option cannot be accessed. I would like to turn this option off but cant seem to do so. There are many answers on the 'Net including editing the registray but these do not seem to be specifically for Outlook 2003 and do not work for 2003.

Does anyone have a solution, Thanks in advance

What operating system are you running? XP, Vista, 7, etc..

If it's Vista or 7, close Outlook > right-click Outlook > Run as administrator ....then see if you can "tick off" that option.

If it's XP, then I have no idea unless you're not an administrator...

I'm having a weired issue with Outlook 2003 renaming/changing attachements to other file names when sending the email. I know that when the file is being attached it's the correct file but when the message is sent it's showing a different filename--it's not the file that the document is titled. I.e--File A name gets changed to File B name or file A may become a duplicate of File B.

This issue is really sporadic and tough to regenerate. I've cleared out the Outlook secure temp folder and verified that there are no viruses/spyware on the machine. It just doesn't make sense that Outlook or Exchange would change attachements like this.

Has anyone out there encountered this issue with Outlook 2003 changing attached files? I'm running Outlook 2003 w/ SP3.

Thanks, All.

This is a good one. One approach would be to narrow down culprits:
1. User - does this happen on other pcs? If you login does it do the same thing?
2. Computer - again is this happening elswhere to same user?
3. Software - Run a repair on office? If its the user profile it may not help.

In Outlook 2003 SP3 running on WIN XP has anyone ever had the contents of an attachment getting switched with the body of the message? In other words, what the sender put in the body of the email is in the attached TXT file and vice-versa when it arrives. Message is being sent in Plain Text Format. If they put themselves on the TO line along with me, they get the e-mail and the attachment as they intended. But I get them switched. Anybody ever hear of this?

Some of my users are having problems with PDF Files they are sending to clients. We are using Outlook 2003. We scan many documents into PDF files to send to clients. Even though the client has Adobe reader the attachment is converted to a win.dat file and they can't open it. This is a random problem. It doesn't seem to matter what program the receiver is using so I can't relate it to a incompatibility problem with Lotus or Corel. Does anyone know why a PDF file would be converted like that even though the receiver has Adobe reader?

I get "Can't create file: right click folder to create the file in, click properties on shortcut menu to check your permissions to open the folder ." I also get Can't create file" when I try to save the attachment.

It's a pain to have to open in webmail when I want to save files to my harddrive.

Would GREATLY appreciate any assistance in correcting this.

In Outlook 2000, go to Tools, Options, Preferences tab, and click E-mail Options. In the 2 boxes under the category "On replies and forwards:" click the downward arrow and select which option you want. You, probably, have it set to "Attach Original message"

However, there is no way to change the way you receive those attachments, that I know of.

Why is it that sometimes I can just click on an attachment and it opens the file, and other times it won't? Even if I right click on the attachment name, and select open file, nothing happens. The file has the .xls or other extension, so Windows 2000 should know that it opens with Excel, right? The only way to fix seems to be to shut all down and reboot. Then it works for a while.

Is this some kinda known bug? Is there a download patch?

All emails using Outlook Express...are encoded.  You will only be able to separate attachments individuallly, after opening each email.
If you had saved the individual attachments somewhere else on your hard drive...then you would have been able to put them all in one folder.

I have a friend with a freshly restored computer.
He can no longer read his Emails that have a ***.email attachment.
But ***.eml attachments work fine.

And his computer now works the same as mine, probably because I restored it for him.

If the ***.email attachment is read, OE doesn’t know what to do with it.
His Email with ***.eml attachments work fine.
If the ***.email attachment is renamed to ****.eml .. it reads fine.
If ****.email files are associated to OE .. nothing happens.
The ****.email attachments can be read in M$ Word.

So how would a computer be setup to read ***.email attachments ??
Is C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msims.exe the correct application ??

I’m curious why he’s getting these weird attachments from several sources ??

A:Solved: Outlook Express ***.email attachments

I'm not exactly sure why he gets these attachments. Some could be attached messages from people who use MSN. doesn't say too much, but does mention that they are easily infected with viruses.

You should be able to open these by creating a new file type with an email extension. (Tools, Folder Options, File Types) Just use everything that you see listed for the .eml file type. The program would be "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1

An alternative would be to use Regedit. Export the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.eml] key. Open it in notepad and change the eml to email. Now doubleclick to merge.

We are running Windows 98 and Office 2000, and one user is having problems opening attachments from Outlook. The computer just freezes. It works if you save the document to the desk top and open, but not if you open straight from Outlook. We have reinstalled Office but the problem still occurs. Office has the latest service packs too.

Has anyone had this before, or got any ideas?

I have been having difficulty opening email attachments (Word or Excel). Our new computer came with XP and a trial version of Office 2003. When the trial ran out I uninstalled Office 2003 and installed my Office 97 version. Now when I try to open an attachment in Outlook I receive the following error: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\.....doc is not a valid Win32 application.
Doing a right click-shift does not allow me to save the document as a word or excel file either.
Also when Outlook downloads the file from my internet service provider, the software icon changes from a MS icon to a wordpad icon.

Any suggestions?

Hello. I have windows XP Home; outlook express 6. I had a system failure and repairs in 11-09. The only change was adding SP3 to my system; I lost no data or documents.

Ever since, whenever I try to send an email attachment of a folder/file with numerous pictures it will not attach. I can only send individual picture attachments manually. Could someone assist me with this please? Thanks kindly and happy new year.

This appears to be a common problem, with many solutions, though I have yet to find one that works for me. When using Outlook 2003 with Word 2003 set to be the email editor, Word opens and works fine to CREATE a new email. However, when trying to REPLY TO or FORWARD an email, I get the error message "Microsoft Word is set to be your email editor. However, Word is unavailable, not installed, or is not the same version as Outlook. The outlook email editor will be used instead...," and when I click OK to that message the native Outlook email editor opens. Word 2003 worked fine with Outlook 2003 replying to or forwarding emails till this morning, but the behavior described above now applies. The OS, by the way, is Windows 10. I have tried to both "repair" and "reinstall" the 2003 Office 2003 suite, both to no avail. Would appreciate a much needed solution to this puzzle.

Recently I send out a bulk email for our CEO (ya, that's right, the big guy!?!). I had a mailing list as my datasource, created the document in Word (as my email editor), attached two files and sent it off. However, once the merge was performed and everything was sent out the attachments either weren't on the resulting mass email, or only the icons for the attachments appeared. Simply, the attachments seemed to be stripped off the resulting email.

Does anyone have an explanation for this? I've looked on the MS Knowledge base to no avail. I'd really like to be able to explain it to the CEO so I look like less of a bumbling idiot!

A:Attachments disappear in Outlook/Word email merge

Hi, I don't have an answer for you but you seem to be trying to do the same thing I want to do - send an email/merge mass mailing and include an attachment to the email. When I start in word and do the mail merge/email function I can send a form letter type text email to everyone in a mailing database but I can't figure out how to have each email attach one (the same) document as an attachment. It sounds like you figured it out. Let me know how you did it and i can let you know if I have the same problem you did or not. Thanks

I am having a security issue with sending large email attachments (anything larger than 250kb). I have checked our firewall & IP - and they are both working fine, it has come down to being the computer settings. We have 9 computers on network - 6 work, and 3 dont. Is there a way that I can print out settings to compare?

Or has someone had this issue before?

I have been sending individual emails to roughly 400 of my clients and perspective clients per month.  I have been sending them one by one so I could personalize it. I need to be able to do the following.
Include the first name of my client after "Good Afternoon _______ "   in the body of the email.
Select 1 of my 3 business email addresses from my Microsoft Outlook 2007 Imap emails.
Include 2 PDF documents.
Using mail merge via  Microsoft Word does not give these 3 options from what I can find.  This would save me so much time if I can send personalized mass emails to my clients.  Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I had a Windows XP corruption to my system folder wherein I had to reinstall my operating system and "wipe out" my harddrive.

I have my entire "old" harddrive with all settings, files, etc. on it, and now my computer is up and running with Windows Vista Business.

I have successfully added my old PST file to the new OS and it works, however how can I get my Outlook 2003 rules, email accounts, etc? I'm not able to "export" as I cannot run the old Outlook program?...

Are these files located somewhere that I can manually add them (replace, whatever) to the new Vista OS/hard drive?

Thanks in advance...

OK... well I thought I had it covered but.... I copied the pst file from 2003 and tried to open in 2007. I recently read somewhere that you have to copy the pst when Outlook is closed. I did not close Outlook and copied the file while Outlook was open. Anyway to rescue these Emails? The old drive is toast so I can't do that. The pst file is 79mg so I suspect the info is there. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I know that 07 Word saves files in a .docx file that is not usable by the 97-03 Word and same goes for PowerPoint and Excell. My question is does this occur with Outlook 2007 also? Is there a way to change it so that I can send 2007 Outlook emails to people with the 97-03 versions?

Suddenly we are experiencing random delayed emails.

Inbound email arrives at Barracuda, hands off to email server on Nitix server, workstations are running Outlook 2003.

Not all email is delayed, only random.

Example: Barracuda receives at 8:27:55 AM, Nitix webmail posts at 8:29:13 AM, Outlook posted at 10:06 PM

Workstations are running McAfee Total Business. Uninstalled on one workstation. Still had some delayed email.

With signature removed I can now send email that is received.

Any signature I include stops the email from being received. This just started happening about 2 weeks ago.

Anyone know of any fixes ???

While trying to fix an issue with selecting text, I got a .cab error that has now been fixed.

However, now when I open Outlook, it is asking to establish a new email account, as if I am a first time user. i can't access the existing email account, and all of the emails, folders etc. An archive.pst file still exists and by the size appears to contain all emails, folders etc.

Looks like you are responding to e-mails in html mode. Your IE internet/intranet settings are probably set to not allow active X controls which isn't really a great problem unless you can't stand the message. Open IE internet options and go to the security tab -custom level, scroll down and make sure the following are checked:

run active x controls and plugins
script activex controls marked safe for scripting

or if your not totally paranoid set the internet zone to medium high. Hopefully that helps

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, jscatam1128.

Here is the solution to your issue:

Turn off your computer.
Disconnect your PC from the cable modem. Now launch Outlook. Outlook will try to do a send/receive cycle, but it will fail pretty quickly. Now, you can open the outbox and delete the stuck message. Close Outlook, turn your computer off again, reconnect the PC, boot up, and you should be back in business.

If she opens the email, or tries to view it in the Preview Pane, it appears blank. These are emails from 2 different people. I had seen something similar before and a bad Hardware Profile was the culprit. Deleted the hardware profile, created another one and it worked well. That does not fix this problem.

Any ideas?

I can't get outlook 2003 to divert incoming emails to another email accout. There is not a "DIVERT" option in the list of optioins. There is a "FORWARD" option and it works but it sends the message as a forwarded message with the lead in stuff in the email as it arrives at the second account.
The MS help web page indicates that there should be a "DIVERT" option that will make the message received by the second email account look like it had been sent directly to it. This is what I want but the "DIVERT" option is not shown in the "Rules and Alerts" menu options.
What am I doing wrong?

A:Outlook 2003 email diverting

I believe that diverting or redirecting incoming e-mails in Outlook requires sending and receiving e-mails through a Microsoft Exchange 2000, 2003, or 2007 account. Most home and personal accounts do not use Exchange.

Can you provide a link to the MS help page that you mention in your first post?

I get the following error message (0x800CCC7D) when I try to send email:
Your outgoing (SMTP) server does not support SSL-secured connections.
I checked with my ISP (Verizon) and they checked and concluded all my settings in Outlook were correct. They said to contact Microsoft.
Microsoft forums were of no help.
Any ideas?

I've seen that on infected computers where the SMTP connection was being redirected to another server in order to collect the cleartext username and password info.

when opening email attachments, the attachments disappear or cause an application error. What could cause this problem?

Try saving the attachment to your computer, and open it from there.

I run outlook 2003 on a win xp sp2 system. I have recently been unable to send emails from outlook. I appear to be properly set up with pop3 to my yahoo mail account.

When I try and send or forward an email from outlook, it appears to leave the outbox and appears in the sent items folder. However it doesn't appear in my yahoo mail box either in the inbox of sent to my yahoo account or the sent items if sent to another account.

Does anyone know what is going on and how to fix it please?

A:Outlook 2003 - problem sending email

First, you need all the Outlook 2003 updates downloaded and installed. There are at least three of them. Use the Office Updates header.
Then you need to look at the help site at Yahoo regarding outlook 2003 installs.

When one of my users attempts to send email, he's getting the error "an unexpected error has occurred" He is able to receive email and read it normally.

Any ideas? He's using Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 SP2.

A:Error sending email in Outlook 2003

Does the program then close - that is, does this error cause a crash? Or is he just unable to send email?

I installed a trial version from MicroSoft of Office 2003. I did not like the interface as well as Office XP2002, which I have at work. So, I uninstalled 2003 and bought 2002 and installed it. The problem is, the email won't work. I get a "The operation failed" when I click Send and Receive. I can't just send an email either. I have a POP account through yahoo that worked fine in 2003. When I set up everything in the email, I run the little test thing that's in there and it sends and email to the server just fine. If I open Outlook Express, I can get it fine. I tried creating another profile and nothing. help!

I have multiple email accounts download into my Inbox folder; each email account has its own unique name under Account Settings. When I try to "Sort by Email Account," the groupings are correct (i.e. each group represents one account); however, the grouping title is says the same name for all of them.

Any idea what's causing this and how to fix it?

A:Outlook 2003 - Sort by Email Account

Hi carlyman

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

This sounds interesting.

Are the e-mail accounts subaccounts of one ISP or each a different domain as in:
1) a Gmail account
2) your own ISP account
3) and maybe another free account like ?

You mention each account has its own unique name under Account Settings. Does this mean the accounts do not have their own unique name listed under the E-mail Account Header column?
