Solved: Audio device not found; listed in Device Manager

Q: Solved: Audio device not found; listed in Device Manager

I had some trouble last night and today with getting rid of a virus. Now that it is gone, I am having sound problems (maybe related, maybe not). This morning, when I opened iTunes I got a message that there was no audio device detected. After trying several things, I rebooted. Magically, I could play music again. However, a short while later, I again got an error message telling me that there is no audio device found, even though it shows up in Device Manager as working properly. The problem goes away for a short time after I reboot, but returns. It is Realtek AC 97. Why won't my computer keep recognizing it?

(It tried going to Realtek's site to download an update. It has updates for Windows 98, 95, etc., but not for XP. Or at least I couldn't find it.)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have a look here:

Select your operating system from the drop-down list, expand the VGA category and download whichever drivers you want.

I'd be inclined to save them before you install them in case you need them in the future.

Hi to all.

On my Dell OptiPlex 755 E6550 2.33, I've had intermittent issues with the headphone socket suddenly stopping working for quite some time, sometimes problem is auto detected and fixed, sometimes I download a driver or three to resolve. This time nothing is helping no matter what drivers I've tried. Have Win 7 Ultimate installed with just on-board sound. No sound or audio shows up in device manager? Are 755's fickle with on-board sound or just too many sound drivers installed? Any ideas please.

A:Dell OptiPlex 755 No Audio Output device and no Sound/Audio in Device Manager

There could be multiple hidden audio devices.
* Press windows key + R* Enter cmd, click OK* Type cd\ [press Enter]* Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 [press Enter]* Type devmgmt.msc [press Enter]* Once the Device Manager opens, open Sound and see if you have multiple grey out items. If yes, delete them, then restart the computer and retest

I see three different audio driver packages at need to find the right one to install. If you install one and the system doesn't work properly...please uninstall it before trying the next one.Installing the wrong one won't do anything harmful to your just won't do any good to leave it installed.Louis

My integrated speakers and audio port do not seem to be working. It happened after I was playing around with bluetooth trying to get that to work. Now only bluetooth is able to connect.
So far I have tried:
System restore
Deleting and redownloading audio drivers
Adding legacy hardware for Realtek
ePSA test was able to hear the tones
The audio logo has a red X through it and only the bluetooth headphones drivers appear in device manager. Any ideas what might be the issue and how to solve them?

I recently realized that my graphics card is not showing any where on my computer. I went to the control panel and went to Uninstall Programs and I found the Nvidia driver. Although I can see the driver, I can't see it under hardware, and I no longer see it running on the toolbar. I have a GT310m with optimus (at least I did hahaha). Would be nice to have it back. Thanks

I'm using an dell inspiron laptop with windows vista. Few days back, installed windows Xp professional successfuly. The main purpose I installed xp was to program a microcontroller via the com ports. But to my surprise the com ports were not listed in the device manager in XP! Any help??

A:COM Ports not listed in device manager

Are you sure the laptop actually has a COM Port? Finding a laptop with a COM port newer than a Pentium III model is rare, as they have been all but replaced by USB.

Make sure you're not confusing a VGA port for a COM port. Same size and shape but the VGA has 3 rows of contacts (15 total) instead of 2 rows of contacts (9 total) for a COM port.

If the laptop shipped with Vista I'd be surprised if it did. Even many 4-5 year old laptops that shipped with XP don't have a COM port.

If it does have a COM port, check in the BIOS to make sure it's not disabled

PhnxVcd is listed in my Hardware Device Manager listing with a Yellow "!" besides its name. Its properties state "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damage. (Code 19)"

So the question is "Is this "device" of any use, and if so, how can I get it to work?"

A:CDRW/DVD not listed in device manager

This is a common problem with a simple solution. In Device Manager make sure that DMA is OFF for the CDROM. Also update IDE drivers.
Also try hitting the Windows Key (on keyboard) and Pause key at the same time, or go to control panel and open System. Go to device manager and locate your CD-Rom Drive. D-click it and go to the settings tab. There should be a box where you can check/uncheck Removable. Mine is greyed out so I can't do anything to it. See if your is checked and uncheck it. If not, let us know.

Good luck,

XP Pro - I had to replace a wireless optical mouse - now using MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2000. It came with a new receiver.

Now the keyboard MS Wireless Keyboard 3000 won't work. It is not listed in Device Manager and the Hardware section of Keyboard in Control Panel does not list it under Hardware though under Wireless it says the battery level is high.

If I use the original Receiver, nothing works.

I tried re-installing MS IntelliType Pro 5.5 for both but only the mouse works.

Any ideas?

I have Windows XP Home Edition w/ Service Pack 2 on a Dell Dimension 2400. No audio devices detected. When I open Device Manager it is completely blank - no devices of any kind are shown. Same with Hardware. I haven't made any recent changes to anything having to do with audio, just a System Restore or two, and I don't know if the problem started before or after that.

Edit: Ok, I got the devices to show up by enabling Plug and Play. None of them have the yellow exclamation mark. Gonna try troubleshooting the audio devices...

Troubleshooting didn't work, updating drivers didn't work, Windows Help and Support was no help.

Please help

I recently replaced a Logitech mouse with a MS Wireless 5000. After initially installing the 5000, I found that in device manager it was listed twice. This didn't seem to be causing any problems and I left it alone but have since had a few BSODs. Wasn't having any problems before the mouse install.

So I went into device manager and uninstalled one of the entries but did not delete the drivers.

On reboot, there are now two entries again but one is "HID compliant mouse" and the other is "Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Mosue (IntelliPoint)".

Is it normal to have both of these items listed? If not, how do I stop Windows from installing the second driver on every reboot?

A:2 mouse drivers listed in device manager

Both entries refer to the same mouse and should be left alone.

Your new mouse is a "HID compliant mouse" like every modern mouse, so Windows loads it's own driver for that.

But you've also installed the Intellipoint driver which accounts for the second entry in the 'Mice' category of Device Manager.

I also use a MS wireless mouse but I didn't have to install a driver for it. Windows took care of that (Windows 7), so my Device Manager shows only one mouse entry which is "HID compliant device".

Unless your MS mouse has any special functions with extra buttons, it should work perfectly well for standard functions without the Intellipoint software & driver, in which case you too would have only one mouse entry in Device Manager.

Hello Everyone,

I have a Compaq Presario F553US running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit, I just installed a new copy of the OS so I know this is not virus related. I cannot get my wirless card to be detected in the device manager. I downloaded the drivers and HP Wirless Assistant and still nothing. So I thought maybe the wirless card was bad and replaced it with a new card. But still nothing, I even checked the BIOS to make sure that the wirless was enable and it was.

So now I have no idea was this suddenly stop working, the light on the front (next to the wireless switch) is an orange color instead of blue. Do anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this problem.

I've seen a number of laptops where the built-in wireless device stopped working and had to be replaced with an external USB wireless adapter. It sounds like you have the same problem.

While exploring Device Manager today in my Win 8.1 system I discovered I had three entries listed under Sound, Video and Game Controllers:

(1) AMD High Definition Audio Device
(2) CyberLink WebCam Virtual Driver
(3) Realtek High Definition Audio
Every now and then when my wife is playing some of her Facebook games she says the computer will shut down and restart with a message similar to: "Your PC ran into some problems and needs to restart. We will correct them and restart for you." She says that message is preceded by what looks like a 'sad' happy face.

As an added note in Device Manager under Audio inputs and outputs both my Microphone and Speakers are controlled by Realtek High Definition Audio.

That being said do I really need the two Sound Cards (1) and (3)? If not, which one could I disable?

Thanks and regards,

A:Two sound cards listed in Device Manager

The AMD High Definition Audio Device is for HDMI audio.
The Cyberlink Webcam is for your web cam.

Nothing there that is duplicate or needs disabling.

The problem with the PC ran into some problems has nothing to do with audio. Can't say what that is but its for one of the other forum sections that deals with crashes.

I just got a new (cascaded) computer with seemingly no standard audio.

The audio icon is a speaker with and X through it and the only audio device that populates the Playback Devices list is the HDMI digital audio.

I have audio on the motherboard (think I can find it?? nope) and some auxiliary ins and outs on the front of the PC (headphone, line in).

No audio will output whatsoever. Keep in mind I will not be using the HDMI audio.

No headphones and no "X"s in the device manager...

um... any help would be appreciated! Thanks

A:No Audio, HDMI (unplugged), No Audio device listed

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. What is listed there? The HDMI and Speakers should be listed. If that is the case make the Speakers the default playback device.

If the Speakers are not listed, RIGHT click in a blank area on the panel and check the Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices and then if the Speakers are shown you can make them the default playback device.

If there is still no speaker, you can check the Device Manager to see if the sound is listed (could be RealTek or IDT) and if it is check to see if there is an error code,

As this is a new PC and you can't get it working it would be best to contact HP support. If there is some problem only HP can get it corrected under warranty.

I'm currently using a Gigabyte Bluetooth USB Dongle. I'm also using the Official PS3 Bluetooth Headset. I'm able to pair both just fine.

Although, I can't seem to find the headset in my Sound and Audio Devices. Yet, when I go into Bluetooth Devices, it recognizes it as a "Wireless Headset" and under it says "Passkey Enabled". What does that suggest? Does that mean it's not connected?

My OS is Microsoft Windows XP SP3

I recently found an old Gateway desktop in my basement. It is from a few years back, but I figured I'd do a clean install of Windows XP on it and run it in an extra room.

I copied the drivers over using a program called DriverMax, and it seemed to work successfully. I had the internet right away and everything else I tried worked.

The only problem I am having is that there is no sound. It also says there is no audio device found. Device Manager says I have the most up to date Legacy Audio Drivers, but I am still having this problem.

Is there another driver that I might need in order for my computer to recognize an audio device. Is there anything else that I can do to try to fix this problem.

I am at work right now, but when I get home I will post my system specs.

Thanks in advance.

I am running a clean install of Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 on a Asus P8Z68 Deluxe. When I first installed Windows, first thing I did was install Intel's chipset drivers and IRST drivers, then all other mobo drivers. Checked Device Manager and everything is detected.

Here's where it gets weird, I had a MSI R6970 installed on a workbench and when it was time to put everything in the case the video card wouldn't fit.

I had spare GPUs lying around so I used a ATI 5450 in the meantime. However once I installed the 5450 and booted the system, then restart after detection, device manager is showing there's a unknown High Definition Audio Device in device manager.

I tried uninstall Realtek's drivers (R266) and reinstalling them, didn't work. I tried installing 'ATI HDMI Audio Device' from Realtek's website, didn't work.

Now I'm starting to think, does this have something to do with AMD's drivers?

A:Clean install - High Definition Audio Device listed twice!?

You're correct - this ATI card supports HDMI 1.3 which can transfer video and audio over a single cable. For that reason the card has its own audio device onboard, which requires drivers from AMD.

It will not conflict in any way with your existing Realtek audio, it's simply an additional audio device you may instruct Windows to use instead.

Hi guys

new to this forum, Help please.

Ive got windows 7 running on a dell 760 machine, 4gb ram, 1.5tb disk.
Windows is running as it should, few random issues. problem here problem there.. Nothing a reboot or kill task wont resolve.

Ive got a GN9350 usb headset, works really well on XP.

Ive plugged into the windows 7 machine and for some odd reason its not working.
Device manager shows as 'usb audio device' and 'unable to start device'
Ive tried to download jabra pc suite in an attempt to upgrade the firmware but that just doesnt work, (jabra firmware software)

I've read about changing the USB drives from an xp machine and updating the registry. I attempted that but still no joy.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to get the device to work or where to start to debugging this?

A:GN9350 USb not found in device manager

Hello oldskoolsandhu, I've also recently upgraded to windows 7 and an owner of a GN9350 headset, the problem you are having is the same as mine. Through a little bit of research, I've found that the older models of the headset require an upgrade of the EEPROM in order to work with windows 7, as windows 7 enforces a DRM check on all USB devices, Jabra offers this service free, as I am told, at least till the end of this month.
You can call GN/Jabra Technical Support line at 1-800-327-2230 & let them know that you will be sending your product in for a “Windows 7 Upgrade”. This is a FREE service. They will give you an order #. Then you will ship your product to:

Jabra – Windows 7 Upgrade
ATTN: GN Repair Center
77 Northeastern Boulevard
Nashua, NH 03062

You can also check the bottom of the reciever for a product number, under the barcode, if the 4th digit is not an "I" then it's not vista compatible, also, I've learned that sometimes even if you do not have an "I" as the 4th digit, if the product was manufactured after Jabra purchased GN Netcom it will most likey work, the only way I know of to check this is to check the bottom of the base/reciever to see if it says or , I hope this helps you out, I just sent mine in this morning

I had been experiencing buzz sound in my headphones 2-3 months back which I fixed by changing the frequency to 'studio quality'(192000 Hz), every other frequency was buzzing and didn't have any response.
After 1 month, suddenly the voice button muted, and there was no sound, neither in headphone, nor, speakers.
When I click the voice button, it starts trouble shooting and concludes that nothing is wrong.
I tried re-installing the Via HD driver but it replies that there is no audio driver installed.
and in the device manager there is a new device named 'High Definition Audio Device'...
Pls. Help

u took the computer to a professional and they left u with no audio? a good computer repair place would of seen that all was in working order before u took it home.what version of windows do u have in your computer? if u have windows xp go to your device mgr and look to see if u have any yellow question marks anywhere. there is a thing at the top that says update drivers. click that and it should install any needed audio drivers. then go to the mfg of your computer and look for support, drivers and downloads and type in the model number of your computer and operating system that u have such as xp or vista.then look under audio and see if there is any additional drivers that can be downloaded and installed.if u have done all of this correctly in your taskbar in the corner by the clock u should see a volume icon. then right cick that and adjust all of the volume controls and make sure all of the sliders are all of the way up and that nothing is muted. when u put the driver in if needed from the mgr it might ask u to restart your computer. make sure u do so and then everything should be working.make sure u have a good antivirus program in your computer also.hope this helps u.

Right now i cant get any sound out of my computer No media player will even open an audio file because my computer doesnt think it has any audio device The problem is when i go to Control Panel gt gt Sounds and audio devices It reports there are no audio devices on Device Audio (XP) No found my computer when i go to the audio tab under default sound playback device it says no playback device and it is grayed out But under Hardware it sees quot ATI function driver for high definition playback quot quot Sound Blaster Audigy quot quot Audio Codecs quot and so on So it does see my soundcard it just doesnt report it as an audio device Here is some background on how i got to this problem About a month ago I stopped getting sound from my computer When i played mp s in No Audio Device found (XP) windows media player about half the time it would play and half the time it would report that i dont have a sound device I was currently using onboard sound Then my computer started to randomly restart I thought this was weird especially when I unplugged my sound cables and my HDMI cable and the restarting problem stopped But i still had the issue of an audio device not being found half the time By the way the HDMI cable i mentioned is on my videocard becasue HDMI pushes audio too so technically XP sees that part of my videocard as a sound No Audio Device found (XP) device So I figured my onboard sound had just gone bad and i bought a Sound Blaster Audigy card I uninstalled my onboard drivers then installed the sound card drivers and same problem So i dont have anys sound because my computer doesnt see any sound device and my computer still randomly restarts Keeping the HDMI cable unplugged helps the restarting problem My device manager sees sound blaster audigy and says it is working properly and within its properties quot use audio features on this device quot is checked It also sees quot ATI function driver for HiGh Def Audio quot and it is also checked to use audio features on this device Device manager also sees High Def audio bus my on board but it is disabled and as stated before in control panel gt gt sound and audio device it says i have no audio device I think the problem lies in the fact that my video card s sound section is reported as quot ATI function driver for High Def Audio quot and i no longer have high def audio i have sound blaster I have tried lots of things like disabling my onboard in BIOS but that doesnt help i disable the ATI function in my device manager nothing i can disable sound blaster and same problem i reinstalled my sound blaster drivers times Sorry for the lenth and the possible confusion but the problem is slightly complicated I will give you any extra info you need I just want to play FEAR with sound thanks for the help nbsp

I have an eMachine and run windows XP. One day I had sound, the next day I didn't. When I attempt to play songs from the windows media player I get a message - device not found. I read a post here that I should go to the control panel and right click on the sound and audio devices and add it to my system tray. That option isn't even available. All it will do is create a short cut on my desktop that doesn't have the other options available as described in the post. I've been researching all evening and have tried vinyl audio and help from Everst Home. All without success. Any ideas? Thanks!

Is there a sound card installed in your system?
You may have to uninstall/reinstall drivers for your card. Go to your Device Manager to see if there is an ? or ! in yellow. To access the Device Manager right click on My Computer and click Properties>Hardware Tab>Device Manager.
If you need more info on your emachine go here and download a SystemInfo Utility called Belarc this should give you all the info on your system you need to know.

I have read so many posts and forums now that I becoming rather confused and very frustrated. Not sure if I am trying too many things or all of the wrong things. I think it was after an update (not sure) the info I have been given is not clear. The audio was working fine and now it isn't - bottom line is it says No Audio Device Found. In the BIOS there is nothing under Advanced to even "enable" Onboard Audio Options or Device Config - only LAN WLAN etc. I have tried installing Realtek Drivers from the Asus web support and have restarted it in the "Local Services" but still nothing. Under Control Panel, Sounds - everything is grayed out. Please help - this is a little compact notebook, which does not have a cd rom, so I cannot even re-install from disk. What next????

Did you install the drivers for your soundcard? They should be on the motherboard CD that came with your computer. If you don't have the CD, you can get the drivers from the manufacturer site online.

I tried installing and it still says no audio device found. I have no clue what the problem is. Any bright ideas anyone??

did you install all the motherboard drivers
go onto the manufacturers website for the PC or motherboard and download all the latest drivers
should find an audio driver for there
install that driver and see if sound returns

whats the make and model of the PC - some manufacturers have motherboards specially made and the drivers are only available on the PC manufacturers website not the motherboard manufacturers website

Hi, You've listed the OS as Windows 8 ( not 8.1 ) - if that's correct, try the following. Download the IDT HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  If you see an IDT device listed ( if you don't, move on to reinstalling the Chipset ), right click it and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then hold down the Power button continuously for 30 seconds then release it.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the IDT installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

I have a Sony Viao desktop, Model number PCV-V300G.
I just restored my computer with Windows XP Professional service pack 2 due to a trojan virus.
Now, Everything is fine as far as the overall operations and the virus go, but ever since restoring, my audio is not working.
Under Sounds in the control panel, it says no audio device.
I'm assuming I have to download or update the drivers, but I don't know how or where I can go to, to find out which drivers need to be updated.
Could you help me out please?

Right click on my computer, hit properties, then device manager. Your sound card should show up there as a big yellow question mark.

EDIT: Here's sony's drivers page for your model, but I don't see any sound drivers...
EDIT EDIT: Apparently, sony screwed up, there are no sound drivers. BUT, these drivers from a different model are reported to work. Hope I helped ;)

I just bought a new 160 WD HDD and installed it into my computer. It was foung in BIOS ok yet its name was blank.. but when i go to look for it in disk management or device manager i cannot find it anywhere. I have switched the SATA port it is plugged into on the motherboard but this hasnt helped at all. Any suggestions??

A:second hdd found in bios but not in Device manager or disk management

Likely a faulty HDD. If the drive was working properly, it would be properly recognized and identified by the BIOS. If the BIOS can't see it properly there is a fault.

Test in a different PC to verify.

You can go to Start/Run and type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y and reboot the computer. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.

A:Empty Device Manager, and no Audio

Hi Kyrie and welcome to the forum

Tacke the device manager issue first and then the sound as device manager will show you if there is a sound driver problem.

Make sure that plug & play is turned on

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. Double-click Plug and Play.

If you receive a Configuration Manager message, click OK.

3. In the Startup Type list, click Automatic, and then click OK.
4. Close Services.
5. Reboot

Hey guys, an issue I've been struggling with all evening here.

Today I upgraded this box from onboard graphics to a Nvidia Geforce GT 430 and also installed the 260.99 graphics drivers from the main Nvidia site.

the motherboard is from the Foxconn G31MX series of boards (775 chipset).

The OS is Windows 7 Professional

After installing the new graphics card and drivers, my sound device was replaced with a non-functional Nvidia HD audio device, I have uninstalled this and installed the windows 7 drivers from foxconns support site.

Still no audio device !

Any help would be much appreciated.

i recently lost the audio on my computer, the audio shortcut on the taskbar is crossed and if I click it, it will automatically launch the troubleshooting, which detects the problem and asks me to restart. when i do, there is no change and the process is repeated.
I entered device manager and sound, video and game controllers did not appear, when i showed the hidden ones, they appeared, all of them had the message " not connected" and (Code 45).
I then uninstalled all of the drivers of sound in there and restarted, the drivers were not re-installed. then i entered the dell website and downloaded the audio driver they have in there, installed and nothing happened.

Hey everyone,
I am trying to get my mic to work, but when I hit "set up microphone" it says "No audio input device found". I have a High Definition Audio Device installed and the sound works fine. However, under the "recording" tab in Sound it says there are no audio devices installed and the "show disabled devices" option is selected. This has been a problem since i updated my OS from Vista to windows 7. I have tried updating my driver/installing the driver from realtek, but nothing seems to work. Thoughts?

A:No audio input device found

If you have the generic Windows installed "HD Audio Codec" instead of the proper Dell driver installed that could be the problem. Install the Dell driver and see how it works.

I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and we found in most cases non-Dell drivers either did not work or did not work correctly.

You failed to include the Dell model number in your specs so I can't link you to the correct driver.

I'm quite puzzled with this problem. Can somebody guide me on how to solve this problem. I'm trying to fix a microphone to my PC (Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Sound >
Manage audio devices) and try to configure the "Recording tab".

In the tab, the message says "Realtek High Definition Audio Not Plugged In".

How do I resolve this problem.

A:An Audio Recording Device Cannot Be Found

It sounds like the microphone is not being detected. Does all the other sound functions work OK?

What is the PC? a laptop or desktop? (Please fill in the My System Specs). Without PC specs we can only guess or talk in generalities.
