Solved: Microsoft bitlocker

Q: Solved: Microsoft bitlocker

We have a Dell Vostro 1500 laptop using XP. I tried starting the computer this morning and got the message, " Dell MediaDirect Express cannot access hard drive. This may be because you have enabled Microsoft BitLocker (Drive Encryption). MediaDirect Express is not accessible when Microsoft BitLocker is enabled."

I have seen some posts saying to go to the start button to resolve the issue but I cannot get the computer started to get to the start button. Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Solved: Microsoft bitlocker

Maybe you can start in safemode.

Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Microsoft downplays Windows BitLocker attack threat: Microsoft dismissed recently-disclosed threats to its BitLocker disk-encryption technology as "relatively low risk," noting that attackers must not only have physical access to a targeted PC, but must manipulate the machine two separate times.

The company's move was prompted by a paper published by five German researchers?. In the paper, the researchers spelled out multiple attack scenarios criminals could use to access filesprotected by BitLocker. ? Microsoft scoffed at [the] scenarios.

"This sort oftargeted attack poses a relatively low risk to folks who use BitLocker in the real world," said Paul Cooke, a senior director at Microsoft who looks after the operating system's security features.

In a post to the Windows Security blog, Cooke acknowledged that the?researchers were right?[but] downplayed the threatand argued that that research broke no new ground.

Must have been a slow news day for them. Cause this is not even news.
The attack itself is not new...so in part the researchers broke no new ground.

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

I tried using HP BIOS Flashing utility on my HP Z400 Workstation, and it says it can't continue because I have Bitlocker enabled, but I don't have bitlocker on Win 7 Professional 32bit. I don't see it on the control panel or in context menus. I do see it set to manual in "Services" but the service in not running. Is there a way to find drives Bitlocked or are my drives being treated as bitlocked because of my antivirus program AVG?

A:BIOS flash error, BITLOCKER on? No bitlocker installed, Win 7 Pro

In the services window is there and option to disable or turn off...there should be. Just change the startup type from manual to disable and reboot. Then try your BIOS update.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I turned on Bitlocker on three new Windows 8.1 laptops and saved the 48-digit recovery keys and associated identifiers, but I forgot to indicate which laptops they are associated with. Is there any way to find the identifiers/recovery keys on my laptops so I can document this? Or do I have to decrypt the laptop drives, turn off Bitlocker, and start all over again to generate new identifiers/recovery keys? My only options under Manage Bitlocker are Suspend protection, Back up your recovery key, and Turn off BitLocker.

A:BitLocker Identifier generated after turning on Bitlocker

Hello Edwin, and welcome to Eight Forums.

No worries. If you should ever need to unlock to drive, it'll provide you with a recovery key ID number that you can use to ID which recovery key to use. The tutorial below can give you more details about this to help get an idea if ever needed.

Initially I found that BitLocker on the Go supported removable media like flash drives and external drives. Why isn't a CD/DVD supported since it is considered removable media? Will this support be available in future releases?

A:Will BitLocker or BitLocker on the Go ever support CD/DVD encryption?

Hi,

Bitlocker to Go is not supported on CD/DVD. Your suggestion is valuable, I will forward this information to the appropriate department through our internal channel.
Both the Microsoft Product Team and Development Team will take into consideration all suggestions and feedback for future releases.

Currently, you may need third party software to encrypt CD/DVD.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and I installed my TPM module and have enabled it so the computer sees it and then I proceeded to create the ownership key and began the process of turning it on. When it reboots to do the system check and proceed with encrypting a screen comes up stating that a hardware change has taken place and I am pretty much done there without encrypting the drive. I have unplugged my external hard drive from the USB port but that wasn't it, same problem, would the wireless keyboard and mouse that have the receiver plugged into a USB port be causing the problem? In the mean time I have turned the TPM back off till I figure out what is going on. Thanks for any help.

A:[SOLVED] Using Bitlocker

OK, I found out that when I was trying to save the recovery key to my flash drive, that was causing the problem. When the pc booted back up with the flash drive plugged in per the instructions of Bitlocker that's what was causing the hardware error. I printed my recovery keys and other passwords for the Bitlocker and the system booted right up and went into checking my c: drive and then encrypting the hard drive.

Hello,

I have a [windows 8.1 standard] OS,I want to decrypt my usb? I encrypted my USB with a windows 8.1 pro but the computer is no longer functional. Is there any way of doing this, or do i have to upgrade to pro?

If i was to upgrade to pro using my pro product key will It work because the os is still on the hard drive (which i detached). And If i upgrade using the pro product key will my standard one work with another device.

Oh yea, the standard key was supplied by ACER.

Click Start | Run, type in services.msc and press [Enter]. Look to see if you have an AG windows service. If so, then stop it first, then disable it.
Click Start | Run, type in regedit and press [Enter]. Browse to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services". If you see "AGWinService" in the left pane, right-click it, select "Export", give it a filename of something like "C:\AGWinService_backup.reg" and click "Save". If I understand correctly Bitlocker is only available in the Ultimate version of Windows not in the Pro version but after noticing that services in Windows includes an item for Bitlocker which is set at manual by default Wondering why this is there if Pro doesn't include Bitlocker it I started Googling and came across some articles about Bitlocker To Go which apparently is specifically for encrypting USB or more particularly flash drives While I have no need or desire to encrypt my internal drives being able to encrypt a flash drive seems like a good idea While I admit that I only scanned the articles it appeared that Bitlocker To Go is separate from Bitlocker proper and is apparently a beta Thinking that it could be Bitlocker downloaded separately I tried to find a download without any success MS does have a drive preparation tool available for download along with some guides and articles but if there is anything more I didn't find it Am I misconstruing this Is Bitlocker To Go just a part of Bitlocker itself If none of this is available Bitlocker for Pro why is there a service for it

A:Bitlocker

It isn't a download per se, it just installs on the removable storage device when you plug it in and right click on it and choose Turn on Bitlocker in Ultimate or Enterprise, or from Bitlocker in the control panel. You're able to access and unlock the device and have read only access, or copy the contents to a lesser OS, but can't save back to the removable device on an OS or lesser edition without Bitlocker like Pro or Starter, or Vista, Xp. Don't know the answer as to why the service is there in pro, maybe has to do with accessing the bitlocker encrypted removable device.

I guess this is a disk geometry question????

Can I use Bitlocker on this laptop?

Disk layout = Premium- XP Pro- Storage- Ultimate

The storage partition is an extended partition

If I can use BitLocker on this laptop will it protect all 4 partitions?

A:BitLocker

I have no experiance using bitlocker. However, from what I can tell it protects the OS volume. To protect other volumes besides the OS volume, it looks like it stores scripts on the encryted volume to encrypt other data volumes. So, you would have to boot up in ultimate to see the HP and XP volumes. So my guess is no on protecting all 4 partitions, if you want to be able to boot up in HP and XP. Here is where I was getting this from...

I'm in the process of fixing crap that Acronis TrueImage broke while uninstalling. Apparently their developers forgot to make their application revert changes after the uninstall finishes.

Anyway, I'm having a weird issue. Took 2-3 hours last night to get Backup & Restore working being that Acronis broke that as well. Now that I have it working, I'm having another issue. I can't click on "Turn on" BitLocker. Trust me, my desktop is more than able to handle BitLocker. I've seen the option to turn it on awhile ago and now I don't. I'm confused.

Please, if anyone can help me. I'm sick of this software's damages. Almost causes for a complete wipe & reload.

Where I work, we have 4 Lenovo X100e Mini laptops and we installed our copy of Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit. To my knowledge there has to be a TPM to use BitLocker with certain versions of Windows 7 in order for the key to be stored in Active Directory, like the rest of our regular laptops are.
My question is, can I enable and use Bitlocker in any way and still have the key stored in AD without a TPM? The laptops did not come with a TPM so is there an add-on?(I know it is a long shot for this question)
Also, what other good encryption software is out there that does not require a USB Flash Drive or security password to gain access to the hard drive?

Hi
I am considering using BitLocker and have a few questions:-

- when I create a backup image of my hard drive, will that be an image of the locked files i.e. will it also be safe or do I need to turn BitLocker on for that drive too?
- I have quite a large file size (175Gb on the hard drive), will that BitLocker take ages to run and will it slow down the computer once enabled?
- presumably BitLocker just requires me to enter a password each time I use the computer to access the locked files?

Many thanks.

A:BitLocker

Any backups you make of a Bitlocker-encrypted drive will not be encrypted. This includes using the Windows system image method or any third-party backup utility.

If you move data from a Bitlocker-encrypted drive it will lose its encryption.

When you reboot after setting up Bitlocker, the system drive will begin a lengthy encryption process, which will increase in time for larger drive volumes.

Bitlocker encrypts every single bit on a drive, so today's large hard drives will take a long time to complete the process.

As far as I'm aware, your system will take a performance hit after encryption so you need to weigh up which is more important to you: performance or security.

When you create your encrypted volume, you will be prompted to create a recovery key password, which you will need to access the drive.

If you intend encrypting more than one drive, make sure you encrypt your system volume first. When you restart your computer after you have done this, you will then be able to encrypt other volumes on your hard drive(s).

Hi all,

I've been having a bit of trouble trying to get Bitlocker working on my Dad's laptop. He recently bought a new laptop with Win 7 pro and I upgraded it to Win 10. It all went smoothly except now when I'm trying to get Bitlocker to encrypt his drive.

It has an ssd but is partitioned already. As far as I can tell it doesn't have the TPM chip as it was a cheapy laptop but I have managed to enable it through GP but when I try to run it I get the message in the screenshot below and I can't seem to find much info on it. Some suggest it's to do with partitions and I also ran the BdeHdcfg command to no avail.

Any help to get this encrypted for him would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jim

I've managed to fix it myself but might be worth posting this somewhere for anyone else that gets the same problem.

I basically had too many partitions on the one drive which it didn't like but wasn't very informative when telling me so so I had to guess and made a shot in the dark to delete a partition and after that it actually worked.

Thanks anyway,

I upgrade to Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate in the hope of changing my OS language and getting BitLocker.
However, my Bitlocker options are greyed out in terms of choosing unlocking mechanism. I can do USB key thing.
After doing some research, I need to enable TPM on BIOS and have a "Security Devices" under "My Computer" > "Device Manager".

I have 3 computers and two of them seem to have a "Security Device" under "Device Manager."
However the third one doesn't.

Is there any other way of getting TPM in? or is this something I have no other options on?

Hello Snoopy187,

Welcome to the forums.

right first off, you shouldn't really use bit locker on an external drive as it can cause issues.

Now, have you tried moving these files to the desktop and play them from there.

Lastly, the recovery passwords are for when your designated chip (Can't remember what its called off hand) or USB stick fails/lost. There would be an option, whilst your booting up where it will ask for the code if the chip/usb stick is not present.

REMEMBER - DO NOT LOSE THEM OR YOU ARE UP S*** CREEK!!!

I bought Windows XP Ultimate and setup my computer with Bitlocker, using a USB key for the encryption key.

After setting everything up and confirming it all works, I thought I would make a copy of this USB key. When I look at the USB stick using Windows Explorer or via a Dir command through a DOS prompt, I don't see any files on the USB stick.

Is this normal? Is there no way to make a copy of the stick, I would have thought I would have seen files on it.

A:Can not use BitLocker - why?

Hello Kathycat, welcome to SevenForums.

Sorry if I misunderstand you, its 9:43am and I haven't had any sleep. Are you trying to make it so when you boot Windows, that it wont boot without the encryption drive in it? If you could explain a bit better what you wish to accomplish I could probably help you a bit more.

Hey, I'm trying to use BitLocker Drive Encryption, and I don't have a TPM, and I need to use the BitLocker Preperation tool... but it doesn't work on Windows 7, it finds I don't have 'Vista Ultimate' or 'Vista Enterprise' and says it doestn apply to me, is there any way to get around this, or perhaps a 3rd party tool? I don't mind doing it myself manually, but I understand it has to move alot of system files, which it wont let me - as a user- do by myself.

EDIT: The prefix option wasnt available when editing so I manually added (Solved)

Hi
I have read quite a lot about Bitlocker, but still very confusing. I would like to ask several questions for confirmation:
1) Microsoft introduced that bitlocker can protect unauthorised access to the encripted drive. Does it mean that it also can act as an anti-virus?
2) i have just turned on the bitlocker to encript my C drive and save the key file ( a text file that contains keys inside) in to my E drive (my laptop has 3 drive A C E ). But nothing different i can see after encripting it, i.e. i still can turn on the laptop and access to the C drive which i have encripted, permenently delete some file there. So it means that if unauthorised people get my laptop, they still can access to the drive and make changes in it---> i'm very confused

Thanks

A:What does exactly Bitlocker do?

Hello hinhtoi, welcome to SevenForums.

BitLocker is more targeted towards portable drives such as a USB Flash Drive. To keep the files safe on it. Lets say your an executive at Microsoft and you just finished up some very important coding for a new program, and you put it on a flash drive and ended up losing the flash drive. It'd be near impossible for the person who finds it to get the files off of it. At most they could just format the flash drive but that would just wipe out everyone on it completely.

I just purchased a Dell XPS with Windows 7 Ultimate. When I tried to activate Bitlocker on drive c:, it says my computer doesn't have a TPM installed. I don't get that message on drive d:, which is, according to Dell, just the restore partition for the machine. Dell was absolutely zero help in finding the TPM and activating it, but swears I should have it. How do I find out for sure, and turn it on so I can use Bitlocker? I don't want to use it with thumb drives as I travel a lot and worry about losing all my recovery keys.

Thanks,
Andy

A:Bitlocker with TPM

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, it stores the cryptographic keys needed to encrypt and decrypt your hard disk or partition . This isn't *required* to use bit locker. The TPM chip is a hardware storage of the encryption key, So only that computer can access the encrypted DATA. You can sill encrypt the disk using the software, it will save the key in windows and not lock it to specific hardware, so you could hook up the HDD to another computer enter the key and get the DATA off. What model Dell XPS did you purchase, perhaps I can help find out if it does actually have the TPM chip.

HP Elitebook 840 G3.Trying to Bilocker the laptop with the key on a USB memory stick. When selecting the check option it fails.De-selecting the check option and the laptop encrypts, the key file is written to the memory stick and the AD record is updated with the details of the encryption and a recovery key. When the laptop is re-booted it doesn't see the USB memory stick with encryption file. The only way in is to enter the 48 digit recovery key.I have tried several different memory sticks without success.I have tried both USB slots without success.I have upgraded to the latest BIOS without succes.I have upgarded Firmware and Chipset drivers with out success. Please help.

Hello, i have just finished building a TaskSequence in SCCM 2012 for de HP Elite X2 1012 G1 notebook. All is working except Bitlocker. All other laptops (HP 650 G1, G2 and Elite X2 1011 G1, etc) bitlocker does work.I receive an error with Active Directory not being setup correcty. Access Denied. This is normally due to de SELF object not able to write the TPM ownerinformation. But our AD has been setup for this a long time ago. And all other laptops etc bitlocker works fine. When i check the bios. all other laptops have an option for OS managament of bitlocker. The new HP Elite X2 1012 G1 however does not.How can i enable bitlocker and write the key to the Active Directory for this laptop?

It looks like that setting can be found on page 20 of the manual under the Secourity -> TPM Embedded Security -> TPM State menu. Here's the link to the manual with detailed settings for the BIOS: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04947557

I have been noticing that a large number of our laptops (HP ProBook 650 G1) have been prompting for the BitLocker recovery key after each reboot.  If we suspend then re-enable BitLocker the behavior seems to be resolved, but I would like to understand
what is causing the issue to help prevent it in the future.  I have gone over the "What causes BitLocker recovery" section here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn383583.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396#BKMK_WhatIsRecovery but
we have made no configuration changes or firmware updates to the devices.
In the System log on the devices, we are seeing Event ID#24635 "Bootmgr failed to obtain the BitLocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match." errors.

Any suggestions in recovering the key which is already backed up in the encrypted HDD partition.

thinking to format HDD and than attempt data recovery but not sure if i will be able to recover all or nothing.

update:i quick formatted one of the partition of HDD and now drive is not readable and whenever i plugged in this drive to computer it freeezed entire OS and upon unplugging it OS comes back to normal

I want to try using the Bitlocker to encyrpt my Hdd. When i try to activate it, the system says it cannot find the TPM. I did a bit of reading, and that the TPM is a chip that stores the unlock code to access the Hdd.

It also said i can use a USB Stick to hold the unlock code. I tried that, still wont let me go past the screen about not finding the TPM.

Any help would be great.

To use BitLocker on a computer without a TPM, you must change the default behavior of the BitLocker setup wizard by using Group Policy, or configure BitLocker by using a script. When BitLocker is used without a TPM, the required encryption keys are stored on a USB flash drive that must be presented to unlock the data stored on a volume."

I am trying to encrypt a 250 gb internal had drive with bitlocker... it made it until 57% and will not finish. When I restart my pc and click resume it starts then returns to yellow (pause). I am now also having big problems with my machine now freezing. Some how bitlocker and windows live are part of the problem... I think. Any ways does anyone have any though or tricks to get this drive to finish encrypting?

Thanks

My limited experience with failed BitLocker operations is that I had to use the DiskPart CLEAN command to get to where I could even access the drive that failed.

When you get ready to use Bitlocker, disconnect from the internet then turn off your anti-virus, anti-anything software. Close all programs. Now use BitLocker.

I was switching to 64 Bit from 32 Bit and had a western Digital 1-TB hardrive, as a back up and was Bitlocker Encryption to . Saved all my files to this drive and turn of Bitlocker. When I set up Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit and added my back up drive it ask me to unlock well I would only the file with the key is on my back up drive which is Bitlock . Do you think its because its now 64 Bit and if I was to change back to 32 Bit do you think I could get back into this lock drive even with no key. Or if I was to to a quick format say 1 to 2 mins could I then get into the files on this drive.

Welcome to the forums Windowsjunky!

Should make no difference of which bit version! I have bitlocker on my 32 bit Win7, my 64 bit, and the devices work in either machine.

Or wait you dont have a password, you have a stored key? If you have the key on the drive thats encrypted that could be messy...

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but can someone please advise on why a user would only be getting one bit locker attempt on Win 8 and not three?

On Win 7, you could perform a TPM Chip reset, but as far as I'm aware, you cannot on Win 8.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is there any software like Bitlocker that I can get for Win 7 Pro? Can you download bitlocker??? I can't find it anywhere.

I have a Macbook with bootcamp installed for Snow Leopard and Win 7 and looked at Truecrypt, but I don't feel like going that route due to Truecrypt needing to be the first file on the MBR instead of bootcamp, and that just seems to be too much of a hassle.

I just want to encrypt my Win 7 partition.

Any suggestions?

I would still recommend that you use truecrypt. Although it may cause you quite a bit of hassle, it should be worth it because your documents are safe.
