I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi, the 'dst' means drive short test, so a problem is showing on your hard drive. You may want to consider running the longer test offered in the diagnostics section on your hard drive, but of course running tests on a failing drive has a risk attached. Do you have all your files backed up? If not, do you have another computer available, you could slave the drive to it in order to try to get your files off. Or, Can you get in to safe mode on your inspiron, as you start the notebook press the F8 key up and down to get to the safe mode menu. If you can do this back up your files before running the extended test.

Looks like the hard drive has failed again, you could however remove and reinsert the drive to see if that gets the drive detected again, most likely a failed hard drive.

Hello JPice

Yes that is a hard drive failure message I`m afraid.

The safest way of retrieving your files is to take the drive out of the laptop altogether and put it in another PC as a Slave drive. Then you should be able to copy all your data in Windows Explorer.

You'll need a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter to put a laptop drive in a desktop PC.

Hello I was trouble shooting a computer for a few hours last night that had this issue and I thought I would pass along some information about what I did and a temporary fix First of all if you want to look up Log Code: DST 1000-0146 Error more information about the quot blue screen quot google quot Blue Screen of Death quot The reason I fell across this website is because the error code - showed up in DST Log Error Code: 1000-0146 the diagnostics test and I have never seen that before To get passed the Blue Screen of Death run Windows XP in debugging mode it should load right into Windows After you log into windows run the system check disk then go to Start gt Run gt type msconfig Now go to Boot INI and you should see an option that says SAFEboot Click that and click Minimal Now restart your computer Now you should boot right into windows without the Blue Screen of Death After it completely loads go back to Start gt Run gt type msconfig and go back to the BOOT INI Tab and uncheck SAFEBoot Try restarting the computer in regular mode and that should work Now I noticed that the computer is running slow I believe that is because the harddrive is failing I could be wrong though This will allow you to back up any files onto a cd so you can replace the hard drive I m not sure how long it will last so I would do it asap If you have any questions feel free to ask or to comment I just wanted to share my experience that I had last night and I hope this helps anyone that needs it Thanks Kevin nbsp

A:[SOLVED] Error Code : 1000-0146 Need help to at least recover my data

Hi and welcome to TSF.
Provided your HD is not totally dead, the best way would be to slave it to another machine, preferably a desktop. You will need an adaptor for the IDE cable as the socket is smaller on the 2? inch drive. Provided you can then read it you should be able to copy your data. To slave it to another laptop you will need a special enclosure with a USB connection.

I read through some threads with similar problems...I'm trying to boot up someway without losing all the data on my hard drive. I'm in the recovery console, ran fixboot, and it's asking me if I want to write a new bootsector to the partition C:? Will this wipe out my data? If yes, what are my other options? I can reload Windows from my reinstallation CD, but I don't want to wipe out my data.

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

When you put the CD in the drive, does it attempt to boot from it? If not, you need to configure the BIOS to have the CD be the first boot device. When you say that you put an XP/Vista/7 disk(s) in the drive and no luck, what does that mean? It doesn't start booting from the CD? It's possible that the CD drive is bad.

I've read the material onboard on this error but I am locked out to do anything. This is my sister's unit and some service guy lifted the HD and said the problem was a bad MB. I am not concerned about saving data as I am starting with a fresh HD. I've been trying to run an install of WinXP and can only get so far when it fails. I don't know how to get to a DOS prompt to run the chkdsk.

During the diagnostic I get DST short test Failure

Hi everyone.

I've been working on a Dell that had the ransomware virus on it. I ran Sophos (bootable) to stop the virus, because the computer had crashed and is calling for a set-up disc.

Much of the virus was removed, but the operating system won't load. Part of the error code reads like this: windows\system32\c_1252.nls is either corrupt or missing.

One unusual thing is that the Dell site has this machine listed as having XP, while the machine itself has a Vista sticker on it.

The Dell was given to me, I'd really like to get it running, if any one can help!

Thanks!

If you don't want to keep the data see if you can access the recovery partition. On bootup press Ctrl  + F11, see if that gives you the option to restore to factory settings.

Dell Inspiron does not load Windows I ran diagnostics and error Windows 0146 not 7 loading, code it comes up with error code So I see that this relates to the hard drive So I took out the hard drive and tried it in another Windows 7 not loading, error code 0146 Dell Inspiron that I have The hard drive works fine I think the hard drive is good I am not sure what to look at next I tried the hard drive from the good Windows 7 not loading, error code 0146 working Inspiron and it too did not load Windows in the faulty laptop The furthest I get when I try to start the faulty computer is just pass the login screen The login screen is extremely slow to respond Once it finally process that I clicked on the login icon one of two things might happen Sometimes you will see the normal decorative Windows light blue screen that will eventually go to a black screen with the mouse pointer visible and responding Sometimes a small dialogue box pops up that says it is preparing my desktop It never does The laptop will go to sleep after sometime has pass I would like to know what should I check next I assume the hard drive is not communicating with something else that it should be So perhaps a motherboard component So it comes up with error code But hard drive appears to be fine since it works fine in another computer I am not a technician but I can follow directions and Google Thanks for your time mates

If you take a hdd which has had Windows installed on it in one computer and move it to another computer to boot from without removing the identifiers you may find that you can no longer boot into Windows. If you run sysprep on the hdd with Windows 7 or 8.1 before using it with another motherboard you should be be able to boot from it without any complications. You want to remove all hardware identifiers from the hdd, this generalizes the drive. Click on the Start orb, then type cmd in the Search box. cmd will appear under Programs above the search box, right click on it and choose Run as administrator. This will open the Elevated Command Prompt. In the Elevated Command Prompt type in CD C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep, then use the command: "sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown"Don't power the drive back on until it's in the other computer.Note: You'll want to install the motherboard chipset drivers after moving the drive. I would like for you to do the Startup Repair using the installation disc.  The tutorial below has a download for a ISO image which you can burn to a disc to create a bootable installation disc. Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation. A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc. If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 from the links below.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed.  These images are hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.   Windows 7 Home Premium x86 SP1 Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1  Windows 7 Professional x86 SP1 Windows 7 Professional x64 SP1  Windows 7 Ultimate x86 SP1 Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1  Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b. Part A, Steps 1a - 6a How to burn ISO image using Windows Burn Disk Image. Notice:  This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this. 1.  Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray. 2.  After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer. 3.  When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane.  Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it.  Click on Burn Disk Image. 4.  In the image below you will see Disk burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use.  Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn.  Click on burn.  5.  In the image below you can see that the green progress bar, when the image is finished burning the bar will be filled.  6.  After the image has completed being burned click on Close.  Please note:  In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.  Part B, Steps 1b - 10b 1b)  Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer. 2b)  You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, I find the space bar handy. At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes. 3b)  You will now need to choose the  Language, Time, currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use. After this is done click on Next.  4b)  Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window. This link will begin the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.  5b)  System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for a... Hello All,
I'm at uni with my laptop but have left all my information on my laptop at home ! I have a dell laptop and yesterday it crashed, when i turn it on it shows the dell screen, then a completely black screen with a flashing white curser in the top left hand corner. I ran a test and it came back with the error code "2000-0146." I believe its trouble with the hard drive? It's only 18 months old but i think my warranty has expired. I'm also using windows xp on it.
Is the laptop a write off, or would i be able to salvage it?
Please help as i have a monster php assignment in next week and i need my laptop to work on it!

The 2000-0146 is "DST contains previous errors".

Dell PSA/DST directions and Error Codes..
http://support.dell.com/support/top...pe=&os=&component=&lang=&doclang=&toggle=&dl=

They then refer you to this HD Diagnostics Wizard.
http://support.dell.com/support/top...F290F1B1CE3491BE040AE0AB8E14BF1&treeid=324398

Sounds like the HD, but could be no disc in the CD/DVD drive when the PSA ran.

Hello,

I am having Dell XPS M1330, Operating System- Windows Vista. Don't know how my laptop is not able to boot, whenever i start it shows BIOS written under it and Dell logo appears and everything goes blank and error code 2000-0146 internal hdd read failure appears.

I don't know what is happening how this problem come into my laptop and what i will do as i am having very important data store in it.

Please help me in fixing the problem or either let me know the way how i can recover my data atleast.

A:Error code 2000-0146 internal hdd read failure

Your hard drive has died, I hope you made backups.
If the machine is still under warranty Dell will send a replacement.
You may be able to hook up the drive as a slave in another machine and access the data but it can be hit and miss, there is third party software that can locate data from failed drives but it does depend on how bad the drive is.
The only other way is to send the drive to a lab that specialises in data recovery, but it can be expensive

A:DST Short Status Test Error

SMART is a hard drive error reporting feature available on SOME (not all) hard drives, via hard drive firmware.

Check your BIOS Setup and see if it is enabled. IF the HD has the feature you will be able to enable it. It is an option usually in the same window listing your hard drives.

Hi,

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.

So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.

Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.

Thanks for helping.

A:Question: Failed Targeted Read Test and SMART Short Self Test

CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.

You should replace the drive.

hi Smurfette,

Welcome to the Forums.

The image below is the breakdown on how the LSC error codes mean.
  - Link to picture

The SMART short self-test that failed may have detected some certain sectors on the drive that are bad and predicted an imminent HDD failure so I would recommend you contact the lenovo helpdesk and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

A:G50 - targeted read test and smart short self test...

Hi there, Naveen-
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.

The SMART Self-Test Unit means that the diagnostic utility failed to read some certain sectors on the drive and predicted an imminent HDD failure.

If with the test you did you are getting a SMART test or a smart short test failure then I believe you need to back up your data and be ready to replace the drive.

I recommend you contact Lenovo support and report your findings as you likely need to send the unit for service.

Update us how it goes.

A:error code 303 in the start up test

Hi, Hard disk 1 quick 303 means the Hard Drive has failed the short test.  This means that the Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced.  The first thing you should do now is backup all your personal files etc. If your notebook is still under warranty, return it to HP to have the HDD replaced.  If it's not and you would like a guide on how to replace it yourself ( it's a suprisingly easy procedure ), let me know. Regards, DP-K

when you see that something doesn't run properly, remove it and replace it with another one then start check again.
If it is memory, probably only one stick will be faulty.

while you've got the box open give it a clean up .. but carefully.

Didn't mention it earlier but this fault reminds me of one I had this morning .. added a "new" Ram stick to an old PII 500MHz, which then brought up a BSOD without booting into windows with similar message to yours.
One of my sticks refused to play with the 'new' stick , so another replacement was put in and instead of a 128, 64 and 32, I ended up with 3*64, and it's been working ok since.

PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, Check Cable" Error Message. i went into the bios and got nothing out of changing the boot order or resetign to system defaults. there was a few times where i was able to get past that error and it went into the screen where it asks how you want to boot up. last known good config, start windows normally. safe mode, safe mode w/ command prompt, Etc. i really need to get this working any help is appreciated. thank you.

i am also running windows XP home... i think.

A:Solved: PXE-E61 Media Test Failure, Check Cable" Error code

You're trying to do a PXE boot (which is boot from a network server) and you don't have your network cable connected.

Are you trying to PXE boot? If not, you usually can completely disable PXE in your BIOS. If you don't need it, disable it. If you do, make sure that you are plugged in to your network before turning your computer on.

I read similar threads with failure codes attached where the short disk check test failed. Is my problem with the above error code the same? That I need to replace my hard drive? I also read I can connect a "USB device via SATA" to recover files. Can you go into more detail on this/provide a link? Can I ship my retired PC with the failed hard drive to HP to recycle, rather than taking up space in my home? Thank you!!! Darby Doyle

@doylemcpoyle903? To see if you can recover your data you will need a SATA to USB connector.  Then remove and connect the HDD to this cable. Go to any other computer and connect it to the USB port. Then copy and past what you need. If the HDD is not damaged to bad you should be able to remove your data. REO

I was using the Internet until it froze on me, the next I know, there's a blue screen and then it shut off. When I restarted the computer, it brings me to a black screen which has two codes
PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
I'm only able to do F2 which brings me to a menu screen called: PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility and F12 the restore option. it will not restore. When F12 is selected, it brings me to the Boot Menu which displays:
LAN (in white)
CD/DVD DVD/CDRW UJDA770- (SM) (in blue)
<Enter Setup>
but when selected, instead of restoring, it brings me back to the black screen. HELP!

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. I got my Compaq computer just 1 year ago. Recently, the monthly maintenence test ran and SMART Short Self Test failed(Failed (Error code: HD521-2W). What does this mean? I went online and many posts said that it meant my Hard drive is dying. Is that true? Are there no other ways to solve this problem except replace my HDD?

@JockoTheTaco?, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You should buy a HDD the same size or larger to assure that the Recovery media will work with it. Here is a guide to help you with the replacement. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Here is the message I am getting after running the lenovo solutions diagnostic  WHD01V000-UJ7WQFWhat does this mean?My computer is a week old, got it off ebay, new, but had been set up already.  It has been running quite slow, when I open 20 tabs in firefox it will glitch and sometimes freeze, sometimes I can't access my files, it just says file explorer on the top and displays nothing and I can't close them.  It has 6gb ram and a core i5, e431 model, so it shouldnt be running so slow and this diagnostic worries me.  I called Lenovo before running the diagnostic and they said it could be a hard drive failure.  Anyone know this error message?

A:SMART short self-test Warning???

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If the result of "SMART short self-test" returns an error code, the hard drive has indeed failed or is about to. Then you may want to do a repair or have a new hard disk.

Take a backup of all your data while the hard drive can still be accessed and contact Lenovo Technical support if you are under warranty.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Best Regards,
Mithun.

@Les1207? If you can not boot then remove the HDD and connect it to a SATA to USB connector.  Take it to any laptop/desktop and see if you can copy the DATA you need. REO

Time to replace the hard drive. You can use a retail SATA hdd to replace the 500GB hdd you have. Hope you have burned your Recovery Disk set?

I ran Dell's PC Checkup and it failed on the SMART Short Self Test. From what I get this basically means my hard drive is going to fail any time, true? When I get a new hard drive can I use the Windows 7 code that's on my computer or will I have to re-buy Windows 7? Are there any tutorials for replacing the main hard drive? Thanks

A:SMART Short Self Test Fail

Well the drive may fail sooner or later but its a good idea to get another. Yes, you can use the key on the sticker on the computer to activate windows. Better still, while the current drive is still alive, just save an image of the windows install using Macrium free or Acronis to an external drive, then you can just restore to the new drive- you wont even need to use the sticker code.

Imaging with free Macrium

Heres how to replace your hard drive:

How do I correct this?

A:dst short start test failed

Welcome to TSF

DST stands for Drive Self Test, If it fails the test it means your drive is failing. You will need to replace it.

My laptop HP ENVY 15-j059nr Quad Edition Notebook PC fails to start. I ran the HP UEFI quick test diagnostics using ESC + f2 on reboot the  hard disk failed the Short DST test with failure code 64NC9H-6TA85K-MFGJWK-60ST03. What does this code mean.

A:Hard disk Short DST test failed

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with your description of the issue. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

Hi my Hp notebook short DST test failed .Error code:gk441d-6rt84j-mfpwxp -60u503Product I'd:e9j77ea#abuWhat does that mean and what can I do now ?

A:Hard drive short DST TEST FAILED

Hi,            The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.

It sounds as if it should be replaced before it fails permanently.

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

I have a Dell Inspirion operating on Windows XP with a new as of Test DST Short but Fail, Pass? ChkDsk four months ago Seagate SATA hard drive I don t remember the exact specs but it s G and I ve only used about half that A few days ago my DST Short Test Fail, but ChkDsk Pass? Seagate Freego external drive was taking forever to disconnect so I just pulled it out I promptly got the blue screen of death for the first time restarted my computer manually and everything seemed fine Today I tried to Hibernate my computer and it froze before completing the hibernation I shut it off manually and restarted it When it reached the quot Dell quot bootup screen I ran the onboard diagnostics test There it gave me the error code of quot DST Short Test Fail quot I ran chkdsk next to see if I could repair the problem and chkdsk said I was fine I restarted my computer correctly ran diagnostics again and recieved this error code quot DST Short Test Fail quot To the best of my knowledge my computer has never been jolted dropped has no viruses and has not been abused in anyway since the new DST Short Test Fail, but ChkDsk Pass? hard drive in April Is my hard drive really dying again Or is DST Short Test Fail, but ChkDsk Pass? my diagnostic test lying to me My last hard drive which had good cause to fail also gave me the error messages but in that instance Chkdsk found corrupted sectors I ve never seen a scenario like the one I have now before Thanks nbsp

A:DST Short Test Fail, but ChkDsk Pass?

The general consensus seems to be you're looking at HD failure soon.

SMART Short Self Test - Failed HD521-2W

Please recommend best solution: Clone and replace WD Hard Drive?  If so, what is recommended WD replacement model?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

A:SMART Short Self Test - Failed HD521-2W

> Clone and replace WD Hard Drive?  If so, what is recommended WD replacement model? Your current disk-drive is 1000 GB.  So, any 1000 GB or 2000 GB drive will work, without any worries.Anything larger might have an issue, if the motherboard is "older". Note that WD offers a download of free "disk-cloning" software, as long as either the "source" or the "target" disk-drive was manufactured by WD. How "full" is your current drive?  Buy a new hard-drive, and backup all your data/files/music/pictures/bookmarks to it,while your current disk-drive is still working OK.  Or, "clone" your current disk-drive to the new drive. If the disk-drive is still under warranty from WD, WD will replace it.  You might have to pay for shipping it to WD. If the disk-drive is out-of-warranty, WD sometimes has a "customer loyalty" program. You tell WD the serial-number of the drive, and you get a discount on theh purchase of a new disk-drive from WD's online-store, and you don't have to return your current disk-drive.
