Solved: No sound icon in Wins taskbar

Q: Solved: No sound icon in Wins taskbar

Using Wins XP. I had to reinstall the driver for my DVD drive which wasn't being recognized, but now I think I messed up the audio. Sound is working but the audio icon isn't showing up in the taskbar. I went to sound/audio in the control panel but I couldnt select place volume icon in the taskbar. I get the error message that the Volume Control program has not been installed, and to use Add/Remove Programs, but Iim not sure which one it is or if it's in the Add Remove Programs.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and click on the "Notification Area" Tab I see that under "System Icons" that the only one I can check is the Clock; all the others are grayed out and I can't check them, however, I had a Sound Icon in my Taskbar previously that has for some odd reason simply disappeared, and since I can't check on it here, I can't seem to get it back in my Taskbar no matter where I look on the computer. How can I restore this option so that I have a Sound Icon in my Taskbar again, and are the other two features--Network and Power, a problem being that they too are grayed out?

Thanks for your help.

A:Missing Sound Icon on Taskbar gone after various viruses

G'day Bob,

There are a couple of ways to rectify this pesky critter (the Volume Icon) misbehaving, so lets try these two Steps....

(You will need your Windows? XP CD)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in the Drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting)....

Now go Start > Run and enter these commands....(hit Enter after each command.)

Enter your CD/DVD Drive letter (I will use E: for this exercise.)

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

(Please note the space between the ex_ and the c:)

Once you hit enter this time you will notice that the file will be 'expanded by an amount of about 145%'.

When it is finished, type exit; remove the CD.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Click Services and Applications.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Scroll down in the Services list, right-click SSDP Discovery Service, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab, in the Startup type drop-down list, click Disabled.
6. Click OK.

Close all windows and reboot the computer.

Upon restart, all should now be normal (hopefully).

Post back with the results, and if there are any other queries/concerns.

Kind Regards,

Let's fix the duplicate icon first, open Firefox from the pinned icon you have already after the second one opens up unpin the first one and pin the second one that should stop the duplicate icon.

Now the icon go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar then right-click on the Firefox shortcut click on properties make sure you're in the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon Button. After you open up Firefox again icon will revert back to the default icon because it opens up Firefox.exe you would have to change the icon in the .exe for a permanent change.

On windows 8.1, my taskbar, one day, suddenly stopped displaying the audio icon on the taskbar. When I right click it, go to the properties, and click customize, it doesn't show the audio icon as an option. When I click, "turn system icons on or off," I can see the audio icon, but it is locked to off. I don't know where to look from here.

A:[SOLVED] Not Showing Audio Icon On Taskbar

Method 1:
There is no option available in control panel volume settings to show volume icon like earlier operating system. In Windows 8 and 8.1 you can enable volume icon by modifying ?Turn system icons on or off? option.
Right click on or near time clock in notification area and select Properties.

Make sure Volume icon is set ?On? as shown below, if it were off, make it on to show volume icon.

If the above step hasn?t help, ?Restore default icon behaviors? which may bring back the missing icon.

This is the normal procedure to get back the volume icon. In case the Volume icon option ( on/off) grayed out and you can?t change it, then follow the method 2.

Method 2: If volume icon is missing and you can?t enable it from ?Turn system icons on or off? area, then that could be an issue with explorer process. The following two methods can solve the issue.
a) Kill the explorer.exe from Processes or Details tab under task manager. Find out all explorer.exe and kill them, make sure no explorer.exe is running in the task manager. After that, on the file menu select new process or Run (or new tasks), type ?explorer? and press OK. It will start the new explorer process. That should bring back the volume icon, if it hasn?t, redo the method 1

This method has brought back missing volume icon on my Windows 8.1 computer.
b) Registry modification- Its recommended to take a backup before modifying registry.
Open registry editor in Windows and find out;
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

After modifying registry keys, you need to kill and restart the explorer.exe process to take effect.

I don't want to combine my windows, but when i have only one window open in any program, i know what it is and don't need to see the label as that makes the whole taskbar filled up pretty fast.
Is there a way to hide labels when there is one window open, and show labels when having multiple windows?
I've tried googling it but it doesn't seem like it is possible with some program either.

I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous
black screen

I have created a shortcut icon which takes me directly to my Online Banking Login page.
I would like to place this icon (an image of a padlock taken from windows icon cache) on the taskbar.
My problem is, when I drag the icon to the taskbar a popup asks me if I want to 'Pin to Internet Explorer'...this is the only option given.
If I drop the icon onto the taskbar it changes my 'Padlock' icon to that of Internet Explorer...Clicking on this IE icon still takes me to my Online Banking Login page but I find it confusing having an IE icon.

Does anyone know how I can have my 'Padlock' icon showing on the taskbar.

This behavior can occur if the Sndvol32.exe file is damaged or missing.
To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows XP compact disc to the system_root\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent it from starting automatically.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
4. Type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and system_root is the path and folder name where the Windows system files are located (generally C:\Windows):
CD-ROM drive:
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ system_root\system32\sndvol32.exe

Note that there is a space between "ex_" and "system_root" in this command.
For example, if your computer's CD-ROM drive is drive E, and the folder that contains the Windows system files is C:\Windows, type the following lines at the command prompt (pressing ENTER after each line):
cd i386
expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe
5. Type exit to quit the command prompt.
6. Verify that you can start Volume Control and that the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area (if you selected this option).
By default, the Volume icon is not displayed in the notification area in Windows XP.

Hi all,

I recently bought an ultrawide monitor & have been playing Farcry 3 on it (through UPlay) with absolutely no problems, just like with my old monitor, but wider!

Unfortunately, when I boot Steam then click 'Play' on L4D2 the game instantly minimizes to tasbar. When I click (OR right-click) on the taskbar icon to try & reopen the game I can hear the Valve intro music, then the L4D2 intro video but not the L4D2 menu music. The game just stops there & I can't reopen the taskbar icon (it has the 'depressed' animation, but I'm still seeing the desktop).

I don't even know where to start with this as seem to think this game is natively supported at ultrawide resolution, as is Farcry 3.

Wish I had a better title, but I wasn't sure how to word this.

Basically what's happening is I have 2 instances of Firefox (different versions and different folder locations) and one of the instances is not opening where it's icon location is.

Example Screenshot:
As you can see. The far left instance does not want to open where it's icon location is.
The far right version always does it.
Even if I unpin the currently working instance (blue/orange icon) to only house 1 firefox instance (grey/black), the grey/black instance will still not open like the blue/orange instance current does (in it's own icon).
Hopefully this isn't confusing for anyone. I searched for a few terms to see if anyone had this problem and nothing came up, maybe I wasn't wording my searches correctly.

Hopefully someone can give some insights.

Running Vista Home Premium x64 SP2.

This week an icon showed up in my task bar and I can't get rid of it, don't recall installing any programs to trigger this. Right click does nothing, Task manager(applications) doesn't show the program, so I can't end task, and I don't see any processes(unnecessary) that would be attached to this. When I Alt+Tab, it shows "Desktop" with a small window in the lower right hand corner.

I have attached pictures, if that helps.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I have Windows XP on my computer. I have a dictionary icon on my desktop. But I can?t seem to drag that icon to the left side of my taskbar. When I drag it down it springs back up. How could i put it on my taskbar? Thank you very much. murrar.

A:icon on taskbar

Hello Right click on a blank area of the desktop.Select "Arrange Icons By".Do you have a check mark next to "Auto Arrange" ?A check mark next to "Auto Arrange" will cause an icon that is dragged to spring back to where it was when trying to move it from one place to another on the desktop, but it should have no bearing on adding an icon to the Quick Launch bar. Now, regarding trying to drag it to the you mean that you are trying to add that icon to the Quick Launch bar ?When you drag it to the Quick Launch bar, you left click on the icon, continue to hold onto the left click, and drag it.As you hover over the Quick Launch bar, do you see an I bar cursor (shaped like the capital letter I) in that spot on the Quick Launch bar where you intend to drop it ? Are you letting go of the left click of the mouse when you see the I bar cursor ?I don't think a locked taskbar will cause that. I just tried dragging an icon to my Quick Launch bar, and was successful in dragging/dropping it onto the Quick Launch bar. I tried it with/without a check mark next to "Auto Arrange", and with the taskbar locked/unlocked. I am unable to recreate your issue.See if this article helps (has screen shots):How do I add an application to the Windows Quick Launch Bar?

A:Icon On TaskBar ?

That will depend on the Taskbar buttons setting (see pic). You ran out of taskbar real estate and that's why the descriptors vanished.

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knows the name or anything about this taskbar icon? It's related to WIFi-LAN connections, and it may have to do with the Qualcomm Atheros 5007EG network adapter(MAY). I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section/topic; I'm new here. Thank you so much in advance!

A:Does anyone know the name of this taskbar icon?

Hello Extreme Nova,

It does appear to be a network icon, so my guess would be that it's from an installed network driver or software.

Does it open anything or have any options if you left or right click on it to help ID what it's for?

"A network icon will appear in the taskbar in the lower right-hand corner of your screen and the picture of the two little computers will start to blink".This does not happen unless I connect to the internet first, then I have to put a check mark by "show icon in task bar"in network settings(while connected).I have to do this every time I am connected won't show icon unless I do it this way..The check mark won't stay when I disconnect from internet.
Has anyone else had this problem in (XP home)

Life is great and then you get a computer---oh boy

A:No icon in taskbar

The icons will not show up until you connect. (on a dialup) This is normal. When you disconnect from the internet, the icon disappears also. If you are on a LAN, you can turn these on also, when the LAN is disconnected, a RED X appears in the little TV icon. In other words, on a dialup connection, the icons are supposed to disappear when the connection is lost. Exception to this is on an external modem, then the icon should appear with a RED X through it when disconnected. Do you have an external modem? The LAN icon will always be present when a network card is installed. The LAN and Dialup icons look alike. I hope I understood your problem. If not, please post back with the exact type of connection you are using and as much info about where exactly you are going to reset you icon. Thanks

Hi Pete C.

Control Panel > Network Connections to show your Network Connections
Right click on a Network Connection and select Properties
On the General tab
Place a check mark in: Show icon in notification area when connected

Let us know if that works for you or not.

I have created a VBS file, when i open it in the taskbar i get the standard 'Icon Missing' Type icon in the taskbar, and was wondering how to change it to a custom icon, like the one bellow (from my school)
All help appreciated.

A:Add Taskbar icon to .vbs

Did you try creating an actual shortcut to the .vbs file then right-clicking it and choosing Properties then Change icon? The icon you want to use has to be on the HDD in a Folder, usually in the same Folder as the file, and you'd choose that icon. It's best to save the icon as a .ico file and adhere to the size limit for it, can't be very large. Most icons associated with programs are embedded in their .exe file, maybe in a .dll file.

I am trying to put my outlook icon on the task bar. I don't remember how to do it. Can someone help me? Others that I created a long time ago have an .scf at the end of the file name.

Thank you for your help.

A:TaskBar Icon

Open Windows Explorer and go to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10 double click on Office10 and
Scroll down to Outlook and right click and select create shortcut. With the shortcut on the desktop, drag and release it on the quick launch bar.
This is if you mean Outlook and not Outlook Express. If you have Outlook 2003, it will be in Office11

Hello there,Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)Open the file and it will extract the contents (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop. Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. This is done by rebooting Windows and pressing F8 at boot/Windows startup, usually right after the beep. Then select Safe Mode from the list. Make sure you choose the option without Networking Support.Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again. Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd.Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files. You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection. The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process, in case we need it later on.The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txtWarning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background. If this does not solve your problem, download and run HijackThis:HijackThis Download SiteOnce it is downloaded, extract the zip file to C:\HJT and navigate to the C:\HJT folder. Now double-click on HijackThis.exe.Put a checkmark in the box at the bottom that states Don't show this frame again when I start HijackThis. Then click on the button labeled None of the above, just start the program. You will now be presented with the main HJT screen. Press the Scan button and then when it is done, the Save Log button. Then post the HijackThis log, along with the contents of C:\rapport.txt in a new topic in our HijackThis Logs and Analysis forum, so you can recieve help from a member of the team on how to remove this malware.
