Solved: Windows Update problem: user is kicked out of system during installation

Q: Solved: Windows Update problem: user is kicked out of system during installation

This concerns my mother's 2-year-old Toshiba laptop. My mother says that sometimes she is suddeny thrown out of her computer - when she is on the internet, or reading her e-mails etc.- whatever she is doing is interrupted without warning by a Windows Update screen telling her to wait and that Windows Update is updating her computer. Then the computer shuts down/reboots. And my mother has to start anew with whatever she was doing. Is this a Windows Update setting thing? My mother says that she has had this problem from the very start (she thinks so at least).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Update: okay, I checked my mother's laptop myself. It seems that there is a Windows Update feature my own laptop doesn't have: after downloading the updates, a nagging Windows Update box with a sort of timer/countdown function appears, asking whether the computer should be restarted, or the installation of the updates postponed. If neither of these options are chosen, then it will reboot automatically in 5 minutes. So...how do I get rid of that pesky box?

XP Pro rebuilt with sp2. Downloaded updates ok but unable to install...help

A:[SOLVED] XP update installation problem

Hello sville, Welcome to TSF!

I suggest you try this workaround for Windows Update issues...

How to Repair the Windows Update Files.

1. Go Start > Run.
2. In the box type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL > Enter.
3. A message saying, "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" will appear > OK.
4. Now it is necessary to repeat these steps for each of the following files commands:
Hit Enter after each line

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Once finished; since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please carry out the following steps to rename the folder:

1. Go Start > Run > in the box type cmd > Enter.

Type the following command in the open panel.

net stop WuAuServ

(Please Note: the computer may need to be rebooted before the net stop command will work.)

2. Go Start > Run > type in the box %windir% > Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder ( by Right clicking) SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter. In the open command pane, please type:

net start WuAuServ

Once that?s done, Go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and see if it will allow the downloading/installation of Windows Updates.

Post back with the results.

Hello, i hope someone can help me! I have windows XP and a while ago IE stopped being able to download, i have resolved that by reinstalling IE, however about the same time my windows update installations were failing and i thought it was because of my download problem in IE however now IE is fixed but i still cannot install windows updates.

Before anyone tells me to go into tools, options, security blah blah, i have done that already but it has not resolved the problem. The error message i get is just a box that says updates were unable to be successfully installed then a list of the updates it was unable to install, but no reason for the error or number is given. Here's hoping someone can help as i haven't been able to update windows for about 6 months now!

After searching in internet for solution i discovered that some other users met similar problem too, but till now solution of this problem is not found. Microsoft support site as usual does,nt give any useful information.
Could you, please, tell me what is wrong with this update, for i tried already several methods, but all of them failed

Good evening from Graz,

i have quite a strange problem on my personal pc since the last few days. I cannot login to my useraccount(which has a transparent picture at the logon screen since a few days).
I have just one workarround: if i login with my adminaccount and logoff, the userpicture of my privateaccount appears again and the login is possible.

What could this problem be related to?

greetings
Nico Mller

I was trying to tripple boot w/ Windows 7, win xp and ubuntu. i already had windows 7 and ubuntu on the computer, but when i installed win xp, windows 7 wouldnt boot. ive tried grub, using the bootrec.exe /fixboot and /fixmbr commands, but cant get it to load. When i load up the windows 7 install disk, it finds the windows 7 installation, but says its on an unknown disk. i can only assume that the windows xp installation kicked windows 7 off of the c: drive, and now windows 7 is floating around in oblivion.

any thoughts on how i can get it to boot?
Other potentially helpful info:

i can see the partitions info in ubuntu, but since linux dosent use a drive scheme, i kinda expected that.

i can see the drive in win xp's disk management, but i cant give it a drive letter

A:Solved: Windows 7 was kicked off of the C: drive by Win XP

ok, so i managed to get it working. i had to use the paragon partition manager to make the partition unhidden and active.(not quite sure how that happened, perhaps a side effect of the win 7 startup repair?)

once i did that, i went into the boot.ini file and pointed it to the correct partition, then reran the win 7 startup repair. it seems to have fixed it.

A few days ago, Windows Update Automatic updates installed an update on my computer called:

Windows Search 4.0 for Windows Vista (KB940157)

When I restarted my computer after this update I tried to log on and got this message:

The user profile service has failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

I fixed this by booting into the F8 restore options on my Dell Laptop and used system restore to repair the problem
Today Windows Update Installed that same update again and the same problem arose which I again fixed with system restore.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, like why should this update be causing my User Profile not to load ?

Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit

A:Windows Search 4 Update/User Profile problem

Hi, RockLobster, and welcome to the forums.
Hide the update in Windows Update so it won't try to install it.

Manually set a restore point - see System Restore Point - create

Manually download the Windows Search 4.0 update from Microsoft.

Install it

See if that causes the same problem - if so, revert to your newest System Restore.

A:Virus, Windows update, user profile and now Genuine Windows problem

If it gives you a access denied message while trying to activate windows; you may very well need to change the permissions for your user name in order for you to have access to it as windows 7 has quirks about having access to certain items even if your user name is a administrator. As for the non genuine windows thing; I strongly advise you in the future to never go to a non genuine site for any free browser. Always type the url directly into the address bar of the browser you use as that way you will encounter less issues. To get rid of the non genuine opera copy. I would download and install revo uninstaller from the link below and that should help to get rid of any registry entries in windows as well as the program folder:

http://www.revouninstaller.com/downl...e-portable.php

download, install, and run the uninstaller from the above link then do a google search for opera browser. Thats your best bet at this point.

Hi,

I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed.

When I installed the updates shown in the attached screen printout and restart the computer (Gateway laptop with Intel T2060 1.6GHz) I get the following message: "An unauthorized change has been made to your licence", I'm been ask to activate Windows online (although I already activated Windows!), which I can't do since I don't have a LAN connection...

The only solution I found was to restore to before this update installation and disable Windows update... which is a bit annoying, right?

I ran avast anti-virus and uniblue spyeraser... problem is still there.

Any help, please?
(I must say I purchased this laptop second-hand)

A:[SOLVED] can't start Windows (Vista) after Windows update installation

I would say selectively install them one at a time till you find the one that is causing the issue, and then research as to why it is doing this. Someone else may have a more pinpoint answer, but this is where I would start.

Okay here's what happened. I re-installed windows and when installing SP2 it gave me a bunch of problems, so I re-re-installed windows xp pro again. After re-re-installing it sp2 installed fine and everything is now all fine and dandy. The only problem is there are a bunch of folders that were made during my first attempt to re-install windows. These folders for some reason were put onto an external harddrive that I have. Most of the folders contain the SP2 installer from the previous installation, which were never even used. Every time I try to delete them it says "cannot delete sp2, access denied."
These are the files I need to get rid of..

and this is the error message it gives me

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

A:Installation Problem of MS Office 2007 SP1 Update on Windows Vista Home Premium

I would say that the simple solution is probably to do a repair install of Office 2007. There is, however a KB that addresses this problem for Office 2003, which may apply to 2007: How to troubleshoot common Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server Update Services installation issues

Hopefully that helps.

A:Error message when trying to update to Windows 10 or to reinstall operating system 8.1: We couldn't update the system reserved partition."

On MBR disk, Windows 10 requires a 500MB system reserved partition, while 100MB in Windows 7, so you can try to extend system reserved partition.
In disk management, you can only extend partition using the unallocated space next to its right side. so even if you shrink D: drive, the option to extend the efi partition is still grayed out. My suggestion is to use a third party software, AOMEI Partition Assistant, both the standard (free) or the Professional(paid) version can extend partition as long as there is unallocated space on that hard drive. to see more information read:

I bought a Windows Dell System Update Restore/Windows Problem desktop computer about years ago it worked fine until this spring The computer would freeze I would use system restore to go back a few weeks and it would work fine for another weeks or so This happened times in a row then it worked for a good months and then the next time it froze System Restore/Windows Update Problem it couldn't successfully restore from the last point so I used Dell Data Safe to make a backup of my hard drive and restore everything to factory default I asked it to backup all videos pictures and documents but for some reason it only backed up the videos I downloaded recuva and was able to salvage a good portion of the pictures though the documents wouldn't open System Restore/Windows Update Problem despite the fact recuva seemed to think they were restored in excellent condition At this point I took all the videos and pictures and put them on an external drive and decided to do another restore but this time start completely fresh and only bring back the old files that I truly want I'd run some programs I heard about PC Decrapifier which was supposed to be good for getting rid of useless background junk and get the computer working like new again When I was loading chrome avg and the decrapifier I accidentally clicked a quot fake quot download link on one of the pages that wasn't for the program I wanted AVG could recognize a trojan on the system and claimed it was removing it but if I ran another scan seconds later System Restore/Windows Update Problem it would just claim to find and remove it again Opening Chrome would have it pop up and alert me it found that virus once again but for some reason it could not properly get rid of it I figured that since the computer was restarted only a few hours ago it was easiest to just restore it again rather than deal with this virus Upon restoring this time around Chrome wouldn't install It would just go through the loading endlessly so I decided to restart the computer It had the same problem with the system update loading endlessly All I can do now is shut off the computer manually and it just loads back up to the system update fruitlessly Nothing in F setup seems to help hitting f doesn't actually load up the menu it says it should f isn't starting safe mode even with a restore disk I made on my windows laptop I no longer have the disk the system came with and I am out of ideas I can't access anything because I can't log in does anyone have any tips for what I can do

A:Installation Problem After Changing User Account Name?

Hello Tephen,

What method did you use to rename your user account name? If in Control Panel -> User Accounts, then that's fine.

Using the above method will you just change your user account's display name, and will not change the name of your user profile folder (C:\Users\UserName). That is normal since you don't want to rename your user profile folder since it will break your account. The old and new display name will be associated with your user account and user profile folder.

Yeah, it's best to install a program with it's setup file located say on your desktop to help prevent access issues.

Just to let you know, I did not create a partition to install windows on, just raw space (is it neccesary to create a partition?). Anyways, just looking to see if anyone has a solution to this, as usual, all help is greatly appreciated

Hi all,

Some of you may remember me from a while ago with a similar issue, but not he same, but heres the situation

After much dissapointment with Vista on my dads PC, we have finally attempted to downgrade back to Windows XP. After using Killdisk and formatting the drive that Vista was on, we booted the Windows XP cd and it started loading. Once it had finished preparing the installer, it crashed to an error screen with these errors, 0x0000007B (0xF78D663C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) and said something about "CHKDSK / F" but we have no drive that is F, this same problem has happened with many people I know and I don't know how to make it work. How can I stop this error from occuring?

Please help us out, we asked the manufacturer Acer but they are a useless company for support trying to make us pay for help, please help me!

A:[SOLVED] Another Windows XP installation Problem

You are likely installing XP on a SATA drive, there is an additional step:

http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how...ws_xp_on_a.htm

However, Most newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the bios and check the "Sata Operation" setting,

change it to "Raid Autodetect/ATA if it is not already. Now try to install XP ( could be IDE Mode, Compatibility Mode or Legacy Mode - different BIOS use different terms )

some will say IDE instead of ATA)

If there are no such settings you'll need to slipstream the sata drivers on the XP CD, follow the instructions in this guide :

http://www.digitgeek.com/how-to-slip...rs-into-xp-cd/

I found an answer on another forum. I went to microsoft.com and downloaded a program named msicuu2.exe. When you install and run it, it displays a list of programs that have been successfully or unsuccessfully installed by a microsoft install program. You can then select one/all of those programs to remove. Although (at least in my case), it didn't really remove the software, it removed whatever it was that was keeping me from being able to install Windows Live Messenger. Everything is working fine now!

Have you tried VNC? RealVNC - Download VNC? Free Edition 4.1
You could then fix mom's computer as well as accessing files. One caveat. Without a VPN it's not secure.

Is it possible to install iTunes on a PC running XP-Home so that all of the Apple services only run on startup of one particular user?

We just got a new Acer notebook PC for the family and our daughter will be using it most of the time. We each have our own Windows login. Our daughter will be getting a new iPod for Christmas and I suspect we will need to install iTunes on the new computer in order for her to use all of the features of the iPod. When I use the notebook, I would rather have most of the CPU cycles doing what I want, not what Apple wants.

I am trying to install windows media center edition 2005 in my fresh installed hard disk. I have 2 installation discs for windows media center 2005. So I started with my first disk, everything went well and it asked me for my 2nd disc. It went well too but problem started when all of a sudden it asked me for windows professional with SP2. so after few seconds of running with windows professional SP2 disc, it says its not copying wmlaunch files and asking me , if I know the location. So I checked every single folder by browsing the disc when it asked for this file. But I could?t find it anywhere. I tried with another pair of windows media center edition 2005 discs and with another win pro sp2 disc but still same problem exists.
Please suggest me something what I can do in this situation.

After running for a while it asked me for windows proff with sp2 disc .. i inserted disc 1 again ( as i researched from internet on yahoo answers). It worked and i was able to install windows media center edition on my machine.

Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Have you tried downloading the Service Pack directly, not through Windows Update?

You can get it at the above link. The file name is windows6.1-KB976932-X64.exe

It is 903 MB in size.

If you can download it and install it, you may no longer be locked in this cycle.

May or may not work, but I figure it can't hurt.

I'm wondering if there are any drawbacks associated with running installers with the Right Click -> Run As process from within a limited user account. I have always logged out of my restricted account and into an account with administrative privileges to install software, but I don't know if that hassle can be avoided by using this method.

A:Windows XP software installation from a limited user account

with limited user accounts you really cant install anything....that's why you use that. it keeps you from downloading anything that will be detrimental to your system.....even though it's a hassel the admin. is the only way to download unless you make a user a power user then you can dowload somethings but not all.

Hi I had some strange thing happen to my relatively fresh system yesterday which I would really like some professional opinion of I needed problem (StartupRepair in) kicked boot Strange to move the PC yesterday so I switched of the PSU and pushed the power button after that to clear capacitors After moving and plugging back in the computer booted directly to startup repair and started a repair process The info window stated that j windows ci dll was missing and had to be Strange boot problem (StartupRepair kicked in) repaired I don't have a partition j but I guess the letters got remapped during the recovery startup After restarting Windows booted fine although Kaspersky did complain about corrupt databases After another restart this went away as well Some research I did on the logs and event managers showed this - event viewer says that the system was unexpectantly shut down when this happened which it wasn't - startuprepair obviously was missing ci dll and restored the system to an earlier restore point - volsnap deleted my previous restore points furthermore system stability also shows errors - there was a problem Strange boot problem (StartupRepair kicked in) with ReadyBoot Now this poses questions for me Are there any more ways to troubleshoot what happened and can I continue to use the system Strange boot problem (StartupRepair kicked in) without fearing that more files got corrupted I did run a quot sfc verifyonly quot on an elevated command prompt and it came back with no errors I noticed some small oddities though my last fm tray icon went back to being red i had set it to black there was a firefox addon that still showed in the addon list but wouldn't get loaded All these I think could be because of the system restore I think the Kaspersky problem it complained about databases some boots later again but after a db update it works flawlessly could be because of this as well Long story short I would really appreciate the opinion of someone who has more insight in what windows does on startup repair and such - is there a way for me to find out which restore point was used and is there a protocol of what exactly the startup repair did - if startup repair used a restore point and fixed files can I be sure that these copies aren't defective as in are the backups somehow checksummed - I am not sure how old the last restore point would have been but I am guessing that I can't have changed that many settings after that except for the stuff I mentioned What are the chances that other programs are affected I am quite paranoid about data integrity hence all these questions so I guess it boils down to this question If there was an error on my disk which is an SSD can I continue to use the system in this situation or is it likely that more files are affected and my programs will work faulty Should I just wait and see how the system behaves Or would you instantly reinstall To sum up after the events I described the systems seems completely normal and stable there wasn't any error afterwards the only things I noticed were the settings that changed most likely because of startup repair setting the system back to an earlier restore point Sorry if this was quite a long text I tried to provide as much info as possible If there's any more I can provide in terms of logs etc please let me know Also feel free to throw technical stuff at me I am in the Computer Science field as well and would really like to know inside info as to what happened many thanks Markus

I have a similar problem regarding this update KB981852, only for Windows Vista.

I tried to install the update along with a couple of optional updates. It kept telling me the update was successful for KB981852, but not for the optional updates, then when I clicked "check for updates", KB981852 once again appeared as an important update. I then reviewed my update history and it seems that my computer has downloaded and installed KB981852 successfully 7 times between the 12 and 16 August.

Yet still it shows in the update list as an important (required) update...

This makes me wonder whether there is an issue with the KB981852 updates...?

Hi!

Have you tried the automated .NET Framework automatic cleanup tool?

Simply download it, unzip it (doesn't matter where), run cleanup_tool.exe, anwser "yes" twice and click "cleanup now" and you're pretty much done
Once all versions of framework are removed, reinstall the update.

A:Automatic Update Installation Problem...

Take a look at the MS article ... How to troubleshoot Windows Update or Microsoft Update when you are repeatedly offered an updateAnother option would be to make sure the update was installed... then go to Windows/Microsoft Update... see the offending repeating update and set it to be hidden.Yet another option would be to again make sure the update was indeed installed. Then go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove the update...Then go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and key in the KB value (KB954430) in the search box next to the All download box. That will take you to the page you'll see the download link for your update, click on that to go to the ACTUAL DOWNLOAD SITE for the update. From there download the update don't run it save it MANUALLY to a folder or desktop for later install.Close down all programs and manually run the application. If asked to do normal install or custom pick custom and select global instead if side by side and then next. If any programs interfere with install select ignore. and finish it on out. You will see that it is a much better install than what the windows update manager does.Don't forget to reboot to make sure all files get updated.

I have Norton SystemWorks 2001 which I have installed on both a desktop and laptop. Yesterday I installed it on my second desktop and it installed OK but won't recognize the Live Update feature. I get the warning message that I need to update but when I click on Live Update I get an error message saying that Live Update isn't installed. I've tried reinstalling it to no avail. Could it be that Symantec will allow only so many installations since they have no way of knowing whether it's a reinstallation on the same computer or a new installation on another computer?

The only other possibility which I can think of is this: In making the installation I didn't allow the Clean Sweep feature to be installed. But I don't see how there could be any interrelationship between the two.

A:User Account Problem after Security Update

Okay, kind of getting somewhere. When I log on in Safe Mode there's a pop-up bubble on log-in that says "Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temporary profile." I've checked the Event Viewer and under the error entry for the log-on attempts it says:
"Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that you are connected to the network, and that your network is functioning correctly.

DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified. "

Which is strange because I'm not logging in over a network or anything like that. It would seem like my user account is corrupted. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I would really rather not have to re-install Vista.

Hi all I think we've blown system security our of all proportion to the number of times it actually happens in real life These days people commit FRAUD big time by not getting in to your system with a Virus etc but by posing as a legitimate supplier Bank etc etc and obtaining vital information which is supplied quite freely USER not problem the it's whose the the It's SYSTEM but irrespective of HOW much security is on the system Even today how many people still send Money up front for the most elementary SCAMS Canadian Lottery Nigerian Businessman etc etc and these scams have been going on for as long as quot Pontius was a Pilot quot How many people also give out passwords when they get an email from what appears to be a Bank Utility company etc etc I don't really care if some nerdy sub teen wants to blow my hard disk away -- it only takes me mins to restore anyway but what I DO take more care over is NEVER open ANY email unless I know who it's from - and certainly don't open attachments - especially those on a typical mass corporate circular email system like quot jokes quot etc unless again you trust the source NEVER EVER supply a password bank details It's not the SYSTEM but it's the USER whose the problem to ANY site that requests quot We need to update our information quot --- if they are BANK for 's sake they will WRITE to you if they need to re-set your password etc Never use an online shopping system that REQUIRES you to register on their site Be very wary of quot Unsolicited quot requests from Utility companies - Gas Water Electricity etc requesting Online payments where they want all bank details etc By all means pay them online BUT DON'T GIVE OUT PRIVATE INFO If you DO make any payment online ensure the Bank has an extra security popup requesting a password etc before the request is processed Never download Pirated music other P P stuff from quot Free Torrent quot or other P P file sharing sites If you really must use these then It's not the SYSTEM but it's the USER whose the problem use something like the 'OID which has a private restricted membership Always take an image backup before installing any software from a Site you don't trust If you are a computer admin BAN ANYBODY plugging in USB devices to a machine on a corporate LAN These especially if the computer is running XP can infect computers big time via the AUTOPLAY feature finally disabled by default in W Use something like a Linux machine or a Linux VM to access links you are unsure of when downloading software - especially Free software Most AV software is pretty hopeless anyway and usually causes more problems than it solves False positive research takes more time to resolve than just taking mins to restore an infected computer back to health anyway and as nearly all AV software show different false positives the work required into researching what is OK and what isn't makes the whole process just a HUGE WASTE OF TIME If you use your machine intelligently and regularly perfom backups you should never run into Virus problems In over years of using computers I've NEVER had virus problems A post in this forum on phishing amply exemplifies its those sort of threats that are the REAL problem Just my observations however -- YMMV of course Cheers jimbo

I have checked by going with the custom rather than the easy install and the updates are the same ones each time. Any ideas as to the problem or how to fix it. Thanks

Hello
I had the message "updates are ready for your computer" and clicked on it. I then received the windows update. When I restarted my computer it went on to the page where it tells you there has been a problem, then it gives you some options including restoring, safe mode etc. I didn't want to do the restore thing because I have had problems with that on a previous computer. I have had to start it in Safe Mode. Everything seems to be working in this mode except the sound. If anyone knows how I can get the computer to work in the normal mode again I would be very happy.

Best regards

I did the usual monthly Windows 8 updates/patches for September. Everything seemed to go normally. The next time I started the computer I recvd a message telling me
"Failure converting windows updates. Reverting changes, do not turn off your computer."
The computer rebooted, everything again seemed normal. But it seems that everyday I get the same message.
It starts by giving the message that it is doing updates and is at 56%. Shortly it drops back to the above message and does a restart. When the restart completes the computer performs fine until the next day and it does it all over again.
Obviously (to me) the problem is an update that is not being installed or failing to install and so each day it uses the automatic update installation to try again.
I'm looking for help/solutions.
Thank you.

Default windows update location has changed.
The location where windows update stores data has changed and must be repaired but not instructions as to how to do this.
I have no idea what the h*ll they are talking about. Any suggestions as to how to go about solving this delimma?

Never mind. I didn't think to check what version of IE I had. I did and it was IE 6. Installed 7 and all is well.

More serious, after upgrading to Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.320 The CPU is stopped at > 50% and the Ram towards the max (4GB), and windows update blocked in research, but does not find anything.

What could be the solution?
I had previously installed the 32-bit version and did not have this problem.

A:Solved: stuck windows welcome page. Windows update problem?

Seems fixed - not sure what the root cause was - but in case someone finds themselves in a similar position, this is what worked for me. Plugged in a wired keyboard and mouse booted into safe mode, disabled all services apart from microsoft and intel ones. Stopped all programs loading on startup including anti-virus. I then restarted and booted as normal (ie not safe mode) I could now run windows update, so I did. Had a little trouble restarting the anti virus service but did a repair from the add/remove program in control panel followed by an update. Enabled all the services and programs I had stopped restarted and everything now seems ok. Not yet checked with the windows update troubleshooter not sure if I want to do that or not.........

Hi,

I recently switched from AOL Broadband to Verizon DSL. The Verizon tech helped me through the installation and I was able to connect for a few hours but at very slow speeds. At this time, I can no longer get a DSL connection. Verizon says there is a problem now with my system configuration. They said the PC is not drawing the IP address from the router and that the network card is not functioning properly. I don't understand how it was working and just stopped. Any help is appreciated....thanks!

A:DSL Installation - System Configuration Problem

check your configuration:

Go to Start, Run, type cmd, type ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt

This will make a log of your network information. Go to C:\ and open the ipconfig.txt file. Copy and paste the entire log here.

Also if you have another computer attached to the router, check that for internet connectivity. If there is, then it could be your machine, which will be an easy fix.

I tried this under the Security label, thinking Trojan or Malware, but have had no response, so I'm trying here.

A friend's XP Home PC runs properly until it is connected to the Internet, and svchost.exe uses 98% of the CPU. The problem does not happen when Windows Update is switched off - but happens again when connected to the WWW and Windows Update is connected. Programs will load from Desktop icons but Taskbar freezes.
I have run antivirus, anti adware/malware, Windows Defender, nothing found.
There is a lot about this on the Net but not simple enough for this wrinkly. Your help will be most welcome. I attach an HJT logfile.
Many thanks
wrinklysteve

PS I've just spent several untroubled minutes on the Internet using Mozilla Firefox, so is the problem with Internet Explorer, ActiveX or where? TIA for any help.

Hello, it's me again.

I'm having a problem downloading a recent Windows update for Word 2003(KB917334).
It is installed, but everytime I try and download it, it fails. now it's stuck in a never ending loop of telling me my files are installed and are ready for download.
I'm wondering, I'm using a copy of Office 2003 I got on Ebay a couple of years ago. It's not registered to me, could this be the problem. If so, how come every other update is always sucsessful?

I emailed Microsoft (but left the bootleg part out) to see what the have to say.
Does anyone here have a guess?

Thanks again,
MC

Hi, all. I'm in the middle of installing Windows 7 Pro x64, but it's giving me the message "Installing an unsigned 64-bit device driver is not supported and might result in an unstable Windows installation". This occurs after I click "Load Driver" and select my Rapid Storage Tech driver from my USB stick.

This is the driver I'm trying to install: Lenovo Support - Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver Windows 7 (64-bit), Vista (64-bit) and XP (64-bit) - ThinkPad

I've even tried rebuilding my Windows 7 image in RT Seven Lite with the "Force Unsigned driver integration" checkbox checked. I still get the message after burning that ISO, and retrying the installation. How do I force unsigned driver installation?

Nevermind, I just let the install finish as normal, and I haven't gotten any bluescreens. For future thread visitors, just make sure your SATA mode in the BIOS is set to "AHCI", and not "Compatibility", and you should be fine.

Hi All,

TL;DR: User profile settings have gone to default after a problematic Win 7 update. Can the user profile be easily restored?

The details:

I'm trying to help a family member after an issue... hopefully there's an easy to answer; working over the phone with them can be tough (and getting them to install some remote help can be a feat on its own).

Anyway, they had some issues with the latest Windows Update. During the update, they got locked up and I had to have them restart explorer.exe then restart the system to get normal functionality, and finish the update.

They were supposedly 100% back to normal, but now their normal user account sounds like it's gone to default (all of their usual icons, desktop, and taskbar stuff has gone to default). Is there an easy way to restore a user account without doing everything from scratch?

Thanks for any suggestions.

A:[SOLVED] User Profile Defaults after Win 7 Update

You can install the free Teamviewer on your computer and send them an invite in TeamViewer from Connections on the toolbar. After a couple of clicks it will install, Once started, they just have to give you the TeamViewer user and password codes over the phone and you can take control of their PC.
