Solved: Do you recommend this?

Q: Solved: Do you recommend this?

Hello Folks,
If someone never did a Hijack this log, or a Boot in Safe Mode, would you recommend that they do one just encase the need arises so they don't feel over whelmed if they have a real problem? Sorry to post such a trivial question, but this my learning tool.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have been using Roxio basic for formatting my cd's. I had to flash my bios to install SP2 and since that time I can't install Roxio because I get a message that says it is not recommended for this version of Windows (XP)? No problems before. Could someone recommend a free application that would allow me to format my disks.Basically that is all that I'm looking to do.

You mean re-writeables (RW)? Are you talking about packet writing? You can't format CDs.

I would like to know what program(s) anyone can recommend as the the ***top three*** software for antivirus*. I am sure NAV will make the list, but I'm more curious than anything, as to which ones are really being used and why they work better if others are suggested. I have been using Norton with Sygate for many years now and would like to try something else but don't know what works best with the following: I have, Windows XP (windows firewall disabled* using sygate) and I scan reg. with Windows Defender. Currently using Norton AV 2005, and would like to change. My renewal is due in 20 days, and I prefer not to renew before trying others. Any suggestions?

Thanx

I'm on the market for a highly configurable, but inexpensive (under $100, if possible), router/firewall for home use.

Requirements:

Reserved DHCP IP Addresses
Configurable Rules to block internet during certain times, but only for certain IP addresses or services
Port Forwarding
Uses itself (192.168.x.1) as primary DNS, followed by ISP's DNS (Not one or the other)
Compatible with DynDNS/No-IP type sites
Security Log
Configurable services/ports
Site blocking
One WAN, 4 LAN ports; 10/100 required, 1000 nice to have

Nice to have:

Full VPN Capabilities (from PC to device)

Currently running a Netgear FVS114, but the connection keeps dropping, and I have to manually cycle the power on it about once every couple days. Haven't seen a firmware update on it in a while (I'm running the most recent), and Netgear doesn't sell it any longer. I know SonicWall firewalls are good, but can't justify the minimum $300 cost for home use.

Thanks!

A:Solved: Recommend a Firewall?

The Netgear FVS114 was a miserable router. It works occassionally but over time experiences performance and reliability issues especially when loaded down. It's good that Netgear canned this product. I pulled one out from a former company I worked for. While I was beta testing the new Cisco PIX515E in the environment, the other employees got wind of it and were beating down my door to gain access because of how terrible the FVS114 was.

You'll find the FVS318 a much better router and will meet all the needs you've outlined. The FVS318 has been around a very long time and has gone through various version upgrades.

I need a fax software with some features that are not in XP:

- control over the speed at which the touch-tone dialing is sent, including tone length and spaces between tones. I need it slower and with pauses; XP goes too fast for the long-distance carrier I use and attempts frequently fail.

- good recognition of a busy signal. XP sits on a busy way too long before time-out.

- fax forwarding based on the caller ID, so certain faxes can get automatically sent to a different machine. Feature not in XP.

Any suggestions?

A:Solved: recommend fax software please

Have a look at snappy fax and winfax for the points 1 and 2, but fax forwarding based on the caller ID, I not come across that yet.
http://www.snappysoftware.com/sfindex.htm

I am sure symantec has stopped selling and support for winfax, but you can still get it in place like staples/ office world and online, but you will need 10.2 and upwards to work on xp, and don't think there be any vista support, I am not to keen on symantec software but i have used winfax for years, best fax software I have come across.

Hi,

I?m a new vista user and like some aspects of the OS and dislike others.
One such disappointing aspect is the new disk defragmenter, which I have found out is an inefficient piece of crap!

I would greatly appreciate it if one of you highly knowledgeable mods would recommend a FREE third party defragmenter.

Thanks,

(This will be a gaming PC.)

CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 965

GFX - Nvidia GTS 450 (not that great, but all I need right now)

Also what about a PSU? I couldn't find a watt requirement on the 450's details so I have no idea what PSU to get either.

Hi,

I need some input on which Anti-Malware program I should get. I have used McAfee for several years and it seems to be going downhill every year. After a few months of reviewing different Anti-Malware programs I have come up with three that I think are good.

#1 Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security
#2 Webroot Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware, and then COMODO Firewall with Defense Plus installed with it.
#3 COMODO Internet Security

Or should I stay with McAfee seeing Intel bought them out a few months ago, and take my chances on that they will improve soon.

Thanks for your help!!!

I am trying to see if I can setup a client/server network sniffer for a customer that has multiple sites connected through an AT&T WAN network. I primarily want to have a report on traffic to all sites, what type of traffic, and if bandwidth is an issue. This customer has also deployed VoIP and is being told by AT&T that everything is OK. I want to verify, since I don't take this kind of assurances at face value, that is without supporting evidence.
A network report card as it were.
Can you'all point me in some direction? I have used Network Observer a while back but would like some additional input on other options.

And Tanks...

A:Solved: Network Sniffer? What do you recommend?

Netflow exports from router w/ Crannog analyzer will get you what you need.

If AT&T manages the routers, they should be able to configure Netflow for you. Otherwise, you may be stuck deploying hosts for SAA testing.

USB 1.0 is faster than most cable connections, so no need to upgrade the USB to 2.0 just for an internet connection. USB 1.0 is also plenty fast enough for a home network unless you're moving large video files or something like that.

Unless it's really inconvenient, consider ethernet cable for one computer; it's more reliable.

Hello:
Windows 7
I started getting the following message in the middle of the screen,
,Not optimum mode
Recommend 1280 x 1024 60 Hz'

This issue happend when I used CRT temporary although I switched it back to LCD afterwards.

Beside this, the screen blacked out periodically, thus I'm NOT able to use the PC/Win 7 after this incident. The PC worked perfectly and flawlessly prior to this happened.

How to fix the annoying message in the middle of the screen along with occasional blacked-out screen?

Any help would be truly appreciated.

Thanks,

A:[SOLVED] Not Optimum Mode, Recommend, 1280x1024 60Hz

Hi and please provide us with Make/Model of PC or laptop you are discussing. Also, provide us with Make/Model of both CRT and LCD.

Check settings in Control Panel->Power Options->Choose When To Turn Off The Display->Plugged In (if a desktop); Control Panel-Power Options->Choose When To Turn Off The Display->On Battery (if a laptop). You may need to adjust both of these if you have a laptop. You should only have to adjust the "PLUGGED IN" settings if you have a desktop.

Once you are in the EDIT PLAN SETTINGS screen, you have 2 options for each category; ON BATTERY and PLUGGED IN. They are 1st: TURN OFF THE DISPLAY; and 2nd PUT THE COMPUTER TO SLEEP. All four of these changeable options has selectable time intervals from 1 min. to 5 hours, and the very important "NEVER" time interval.

For troubleshooting purposes I suggest that you select the "NEVER" time interval for all 4 of these settings. This would mean than you are telling Windows to "NEVER" put either your display to sleep or to hibernate or cancel the video signal coming from your computer to your monitor (CRT or LCD).

Now you can test your 2 displays one at time and see if either one of them continues to go to sleep problem or not. With the "NEVER" settings above, you'll need to reboot your PC or laptop in order to lock these in for sure. After reboot, if either the CRT or LCD loses signal ("goes to sleep"), then that monitor is defective and needs to be replaced. If BOTH the CRT and the LCD both go to sleep, it's more likely that you have a failure in your Motherboard, and that usually requires replacement unless you have a laptop with a detachable GPU daughterboard (rare).

To narrow this down further, and you did not mention this yet, you would need to connect both your CRT and the LCD monitors in question to another working PC that does not display the resolution error message. You may need to make the "NEVER" changes to that temporary computer to properly test. Just make sure if it's a friend's computer or especially a laptop that you reset their Power Options Plan Settings, otherwise their battery will use power at an alarming rate causing severe premature discharge (loss of power).

Monitors can fail just as computers can, so you need to eliminate Windows from causing the problem (the "NEVER" settings do this); and just troubleshoot the basic connected hardware; PC-to-Monitor. If the Monitor can't sync with the video signal coming out of your computer's video port; usually the monitor is bad and must be replaced.

One other thing you can do is bypass Windows altogether by booting your computer into BIOS/CMOS setup. If you don't get the error message but see the video correctly; for sure Windows settings (usually in the Power Options) are changing how the video signal is being used by your Monitor. If you do get the error message even when in BIOS/CMOS setup; chances are very good you have a GPU chip problem. But, you won't know this until you check BOTH your monitors on another working computer where the problem abates.

Last, many older CRT monitors cannot sync to the higher video refresh rates used by today's Graphics chip GPUs. Especially if this CRT is more than 13 yrs. old. Any CRTs you are using that were made in the 90s often won't sync with modern PCs or desktops. So, the CRT error message may not be due to a problem with your computer, but rather with the fact that the technology in the CRT is inadequate to properly work with modern graphics chip video signals. Now, the LCD screen is a different story. That's why you have to check that LCD on another computer. LCDs often fail with this same message; which is really a general error message, not a specific one.

Post back your information and we'll advise you further if none of this helps you.

Hello !
I'm looking for advice before purchasing a combination printer & image scanner. I've used all sorts of draw, paint & photo edit programs with success, but I STILL prefer drawing on paper as I find it less distracting.

I'm looking to find a medium-priced printer ( $200 or less ) that I can use to scan sketches & line drawings to send to clients, etc. I'd like to be able to pick up fine cross-hatching at .03mm and register several values of grey, while serving as a good all-around printer. Does anyone have a machine that they're really happy with and would recommend ? I'd truly appreciate your input. Thanks ! Raoul W.

Hello.
I was wondering if any of you more knowledgable people could recommend an all-in-one media player (a freeware basic unit suffices for my needs). I find myself flitting between WMP and Realplayer (beta) because WMP does not download video clips. I have read that Jetaudio1 Basic is a pretty impressive unit but I don't think it has download facilities (and I am wary of downloading it just to try it out if you know what I mean).

Also WMP came shipped with my PC - would I be unwise to uninstall it if I can find a replacement as I have heard it is a massive resource hog??

Thanks guys.

Uninstalling Media Player would be a real pain and probably lead to other problems. But you could go through the options to turn off the scanning and cataloging options, and terminate any services related to it.

It is a very good player, and I like it. It really doesn't seem to be too much of a "hog" when running, but it is always performing background tasks, some good, some not. But I am getting used to its automatic cataloging and downloading cover art and like that feature.

After using bundled nero package with moderate success I uninstalled all of it when my computer became very sluggish. After doing this my computer came back up to par.
All I want is a straight forward music library that I can download from with out all the documentation and that is compatible to the lightning lll.I've heard of musicmatch, jukebox 8.0, etc.I am new to all of this and just want "one program" that I can use without all of the incompatibility issues that arise. I tried some programs while nero was installed and had these problems.I just want a good music archive program that I can use even if I have to pay for. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thanx

A:Recommend please

Nero isn't an archiving program, it's just a burner application. I have no idea what a lightning III is or what it pertains to in this situation. MusicMatch is used for cateloging and playing your MP3 music library and does a pretty good job of it. There are other applications like WinAmp and many..many others. As far as downloading, are you referring to the file sharing services like Kazaa and the now defunct Napster?

Actually i don't have a lot of money so to be in the likes of max 100 $.
I was pretty happy with my CPU(Athlon 5000+) for gaming so i need something in that region. But also i have one more question if i buy "AMD Phenom II X4 940", will i be in need to change Motherboard, RAM, or GPU(Nvidia GeForce 9800GT), in other words is there gonna be a bottleneck effect ?
Thanks in advance.
PS:Sorry if my English is bad, it's not my native one

A:What CPU will u recommend ?

What do you mean your CPU is almost dead? CPU's don't fail fairly often and there's usually no "almost dead" state for them.

Albatron tech support is pathetic at best, but you need to check with them which processors are supported and i you need a BIOS update to run those processors. Normally this is posted clearly on the manufacturer's website but these guys don't seem to work in the same manner.

I am planning a new build (already bought mobo, cpu, ram, and dvd drive), and I am looking for a nice PSU. I havent decided on a graphics card yet, but its likely that i will get either an 8800gt or an 9800gtx (they ususally want ~300-450W)

Anyways, most PSU's I have seen have around 8 molex cables. I dont need 8 molex cables, I dont even really need one (maybe certain case fans btw). My Hard Drive will be SATA, my DVD drive is SATA, so I dont want to waste space and drown in cables with extra molex's. I am looking for something at 600W (nice and safe, all hardware should be fine with this), and not to many molex connectors.

Suggestions? (Not buying from Newegg, since I dont live in the US)

Ever since I have been reluctant to let it clean much up with out eyeballing the change first. I used to have one but since formatting I lost it and can't remember what it was

Hello Chris,

Other than Disk Cleanup in Vista, the free Wise Disk Cleaner and CCleaner are great programs.

Hope this helps,

I have 3 PCI Slots (One of which doesn't work for unknown reasons, 2 are being used - one by my wireless network and the other by my current graphics device, the fx 5200). I also have a AGP 4x/8x Slot... An older version. Newer AGP type devices I don't think will fit due to reversed plugs on the cards than I have in my motherboard. So please, no AGP recommendations.

But, I would like to hear of a nice, cheap video card that's in the range of GF 7 and GF 9. Thank you.

Hi, i'm looking to buy a new CPU but not sure which one would be best for my computer I currently have an AMD Anthlon(tm) XP 1800+ 1533 MHz. I use my computer for graphic and web design work mainly, so I use adobe packages quite alot, I also like to create music using programs such as cubase.

My mainboard is a SOLTEK 75FRV and OS is Windows XP service pack 3.

I hope that info helps, i'm pretty clueless on what would be the best CPU for my needs!

Thanks anyone!

A:Can someone recommend a CPU

From the MB and CPU specs, I would assume the PC is at least 5 years old?

It is possible to upgrade the CPU a bit, but finding Athlon XP CPUs is getting fairly difficult and expensive. Also, upgrading any other part in such an old system would be a waste of money since you won't be able to reuse it in a future system later on.

Your money would be better used if you saved a bit for a completely new PC with up to date parts. There are plenty of fairly decent PCs on the market these days for under $500 which would perform many times better.

A:Which of these PC's would you recommend?

Both processors are dual core so they are about even, but I do like the E6600 better than the E6400 simply because it's faster and has twice the L2 cache. The geForce 7500LE just plain sucks as a 3D accerator while the X1600 is about three times as powerful but still isn't anything to brag about. I'd buy the E6600 and then plan to purchase a new video card and operating system. How much are you planning on spending on this computer because it's very possible to cobble together for you a computer that would meet or beat a combination of the best parts of the 7635 and the 7755 for usually just a little more money.

Could anyone recommend a USB hub?

A:Recommend a USB hub?

well theyre all pretty similar in terms of how they perform........

i can tell you which one NOT to buy, i bought one of these in need of a good few USB connections..

7 Port USB 2.0 480Mps Hi-Speed HUB Laptop Notebook NEW on eBay (end time 27-Nov-09 20:29:35 GMT)

it states ''USB 2.0'' all over it, but it does not come with an additional power adapter...this means whenever you plug in more than 2 devices, the USB block defaults all connections to ''USB 1.0''
so, if your buying a 4 port hub you should be ok, if buying a hub with more connections make sure it comes with an adaptor..

Currently have an HP A1730N and want to upgrade my video card to an XFX 7900GS. Current power supply is 300watts and I need bare minimum 350, so I figure a 500watt supply.

I have an onboard PCI-E slot, pci slots, 2 SATA board connectors. I am running 1 SATA HD, a USB DVDRW, and have 3 sticks of 1gb DDR2 RAM. Have about 6 USB devices going. Everything else is onboard, including sound and my current video card which will obviously be disabled. CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4600+

Need something that will fit fine and give me the right connections. Looking to spend less than $60. Thanks.

Hey guys, i got a tall order for you guys.

i was wondering if it would be advisable to have 2 AV's, 2 Anti Spyware/Malware, and 2 Fire walls? Recently i had a glitch in the system, some Backdoor virus is trying to get in.
Bitdefender is blocking it left and right so im safe. Am i over reacting? or should i amp up my security? So i considered running 2 of each.

heres what i considered

Main AV: Bitdefender 2nd AV: Either MSE, Avast or Avira

Main Anti spyware/malware: MalwareBytes 2nd Anti: Superantispyware or any other

Main Firewall: windows7 firewall control 2nd wall: pctools firewall or anyother

what do you guys think? i mostly use my puter for school, games, and im constantly downloading new software.

Check out my specs and let me know what you think.

Thanks in advanced.

A:Do You Recommend it?

While running 2 AV's is possible, it's definitely not advisable. There's nothing at all wrong with running a virus scan with more than one anti-virus program. Because it's just a scan - it starts, it scans, and then it's done. Real time monitoring, which is installed with most anti-virus programs is constantly running and scanning files downloaded to your machine. Running two or more real time anti-virus monitors at the same time is very likely to cause a conflict which could result in any number of error messages or failures. The most advisable thing to do would to be to find a good, reliable anti-virus program that you trust, and make sure it's always updated with the latest definitions.

Same for anti-spyware programs, as long as there isn't two real time monitoring engines trying to do the same thing at once, you should be fine.

The same goes for firewalls, however, I just wouldn't recommend running two software based firewalls at the same time because, as with AV programs, they monitor in real time, and two programs trying to do the same thing at once can and usually will cause problems. However, if you have a hardware based firewall, such as one built into a router, there would be no problem running a software and a hardware based firewall.

As for your case, if you believe BitDefender is doing it's job, I would leave it as your anti-virus, and use MalwareBytes and run a periodic scan to check for spyware, and either use the default Windows Firewall, or another 3rd party firewall and all should be fine. But remember, the best security is purely common sense while browsing

Sorry for the long winded reply, too much time on my hands lol. Hope I helped

As per title, I've been using ASUS motherboards for last 11 years and I must say they are worth every penny. First one was P4P800-Deluxe which lasted from 2001 to 2007 and second one is P5E3 which I'm using since 2007 till now.

I guess its time to jump on bandwagon and upgrade my system. I'm again very much leaning towards getting ASUS again, i.e. P8P67

I was wondering if I should try some other brands like Gigabyte or MSI. I know ASrock is sister company of ASUS so its like getting same motherboard for less money. What will you my fellow PC geeks will advise to go for?

I almost forgot to mention, I'll be getting Core i7 2600k very soon so motherboard has to be 1155 socket.

A:Recommend me new MB

All you can expect to hear is someone's personal experience with a brand, such as you just stated yourself for Asus. "I've owned leventy-leven brand X motherboards and never had a problem".

You can then go immediately to Google and find all kinds of horror stories about that particular brand.

Anecdotes are just that and mean little since the horror stories encompass all brands and you will play hell finding any authoritative evidence--just as it is for hard drives.

I've owned Intel, Dell, Gigabyte, and several Asus motherboards. The only one that ever failed was an Asus.

Signifying nothing. It's just another anecdote.

Look for the features you need and buy from a dealer you trust.

Make some wild-ass guesses and questionable assumptions about supposed build quality and quality control.

Hope it doesn't break.

Hope even harder that you never need to deal with customer support.
