I have a Dell Inspiron 530 running Windows Vista Ultimate.
My problem is that when I Log In to the Administrator Mode I start seeing many errors pop up.
List of errors:
“Catalyst Contol Centre: Host application has stopped working”
“Input Personalization Server has stopped working.”
“Unable to create Temporary folder. Error5-Access is denied.”
Windows Explorer doesn’t work
In addition to this I can’t get into some applications and they sometimes get errors. I can however get into Internet Exployer but not Firefox. The strange thing is that when I Switch Users and Log into the non administator mode everything works fine. I realized all this was happening when I was trouble shooting a bug in the Adobe software with Adobe technical support. I turns out I can’t fix the Adobe problem until I fix this or so they say.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hi and welcome to TSG what admin account are you usinghttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/problem-running-applications-in-administrator-user-mode-in-windows-vista-ultimate.925666/
I'm using the trial version of Win 7 Enterprise and run in user mode.
When I installed Google Chrome, I was expecting a prompt requesting my admin ID password. This did not happen and Chrome just installed itself. The same was seen when I installed the Picnik extension for Chrome.
However, when I installed Flash 10.x, I was prompted for my admin password.
I'm just wondering if someone might know why I didn't get the admin password prompt for Chrome? It concerns me because I wonder what else could be installed while running in user mode.
Administrative password is required for programs etc, that can effect the perfomance of the computer. Chrome a browser, just affects the one user. Quite a difference.
Delete that one account Chrome is history.

I am a sole account/user (home-based and non-network) with system administrator privileges, except this status is not recognized under Windows Update > Change Settings > Important Updates. The option of selecting automatic updating
and an installation frequency/time is grayed out. How do I fix?
Did you have any changes prior this issue?
Could you confirm that Important Updates were installed before?
The possible solution could be this:
Hold WindowsKey + R
Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
Right Click Modify
You can change the values data from 1 through 5:
1. Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
2. Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
3. Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
4. Install updates automatically / Never Check For Updates
5. Enable the option box to choose manually
If this doesn't help, you can try this method, but make sure you backup the registry files as you are doing this step on your own and I am not responsible for the possible issue -
Backup registry files in Windows 7
Click ?Start? button.
Type ?regedit? without quotes in the Run window and hit Enter.
Navigate to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
In the right-pane, delete these two values ?AUOptions? and ?NoAutoUpdate?.
Then navigate to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate
In the right-pane, delete the value ?DisableWindowsUpdateAccess?.
Restart the computer and then try to change the Auto Update Settings.

I need to connect to a Windows 2003 server via my Windows 7 PC's Event Viewer. It is a non-domain server, so I need to provide different user credentials for the Windows 2003 server. The Windows 7 Event Viewer displays this error when I try to connect
to the Windows 2003 server: Connecting as another user is only supported when connecting to a computer running Windows Vista or later.
This is not acceptable. I need to be able to manage/view event logs on th Win 2003 machine from my Win 7 desktop. This all worked fine using my Windows XP Event Viewer and now it is broken in Windows 7. How can I connect the Windows
7 Event Viewer to view logs on a Windows 2003 server with different user credentials?

I have Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit). My dad's computer runs on Vista (32-bit).
He needs help with his system, and it just takes too long to try and talk him through things over the phone. We are more than 1,000 miles apart.
What I'm needing to do, is connect to his computer and see his folders, files, etc. I'd want to delete files, uninstall old software, things like that.
Does Windows 7 Ultimate provide the ability/software to do that? Again, the computer I'd be connecting to runs on Vista.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all, I have Windows 7 home premium, and I was wondering if while the pc is in sleep mode applications keep running. I'm asking this because using Vuze (a BitTorrent client)
while the pc is in sleep mode the download seems to pause - can it be or it's just a slow torrent?
thank you very much

Hello and Happy new Year to you all.
I am having some issue running my compute as an "administrator".
I know that because when I run CMD in administrator mode, I stay in the user part not on system32 as explained on a post in the forum and I cannot delete some files or folder.
Could someone direct me how I can be the "master controller" of this computer i.e. change the setting of adminstrator?
You are only the owner, here is the true master
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable=User Accounts
Wish you luck
This hidden adminitrator is not to be used for everyday affairs, but merely to resolve problems
Hi I have a computer w/ Vista Ultimate. I deleted the Administrator account today, then attempted to make a new admin account, but accidentally made a basic owner account w/o a password. Now when I turn on my computer, there are two options: *****\Owner & Other User. I try to logon to *****\Owner w/o password because I never made one but it says "The user name or password is incorrect." There is no admin account, when I type Administrator it says "Your Account Has Been Disabled. Please See Your System Administrator." I cannot logon to Vista Ultimate, I am stuck at the logon screen. **********Please help solve this !!! ::: ...**********
I have visual studio installed on my machine C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe and whenever i am opening it , it is always running as Adminstrator. I wanted to change it to run it as the user logged.
I tried looking for reg key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers and
but couldnt able to find any. I also searched for RUNASADMIN in the registry key but i couldnt able to find this string as well.
Is there any other reg key i need to change to run devenv.exe as NOT ADMINISTRATOR.
I am using Windows 7 Professional.
Sony VIAO, Model PCG-5k2L, Windows Vista Home Premium I am trying fix this box for a friend. How do you get to the Administrator User. Who Ever set this thing up had a strange way of doing things When Vista boots up it immediately go to a blue screen with one sign-on icon. How can I get to the Admin User?? F5 & F8 doesn't respond as expected.... I have asked the girl who owns this box about the recovery CD, all I got was a blank stare & a "I'll look for it.... " Thoughts? Thanks....
?When running an application, is there a way to figure out what security token the application is using (admin or user);
Yes, but it's way, way beyond my ability - it would involve determining where the installer will copy to/modify. I use the tried and true method of trying it to run as a normal user - if it doesn't work, then it must be that admin privileges are needed.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/94813/vista-administrator-user-token/
Hi, im running 64 bit vista and certain games dont allow me to talk in ventrilo while the game is open, and i've realized that the games that dont work have a little picture of the windows icon next to them, i think this means that they are being run in administrator mode, how do i make the program NOT run in administrator mode.
P.S i've read many other solutions and they dont work, running vent in administrator i also tried changing the compatability mode and it doesnt work
I am not sure if it is my OS or what but when i try to cut and paste nothing happens in my browser and when I do the same thing in word it pastes a printscreen of what I am looking at. I need this level of functionality.
The computer is new so I could simply start over if necessary but I would rather not. Anyone on here able to help me?
when i open the clipboard it shows my most recent thing i copied but then there are 2 printscreen images and then when i try to delete them it simply puts new images in there. This is annoying. Ill try running my antivirus stuff. but your expertise would be appreciated
Hi all First time poster here My yr old Vista XP Pro & Ultimate user network has a computer running XP Pro that I put on there and my machine is running Vista Ultimate I was just certified by Microsoft in Vista Installation and Configuration but Vista Ultimate & XP Pro user network it does not mention what I'm going to ask about I want to control his user account on his XP Pro with Group Policy editing from my machine if I were to network them together This would be so that I could put forth restrictions on certain features restricting internet usages based on behavior and easily modify other settings appropriately from my machine Another reason I'd like to do this is because the next certification I'm going to be working towards is the next in line which is Enterprising with Windows but I don't know it yet and this would be great practice So my question is if I were to set the two computers up on the network to be able to see each other behind the firewalls etc Would it be possible to make it so that when he logs onto his computer that it's using the settings I set through GPE on my computer for his account on his computer
Hi, well the short answer is no. If you were on a domain through a server then possibly. Why not use Gpedit in XP (it is built into Pro). Mind you there will be some kid at school who knows how to overcome your best efforts. Parental supervision (let them know you know how to check where they have been, just don't show them how.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/vista-ultimate-and-xp-pro-user-network-316651.html
My mom's computer which runs windows vista was infected by something that malwarebytes couldn't get rid of so I stupidly ran combofix without any guidance (despite the many warnings not to do so). It appears that combofix probably got rid of the trojan/rootkit (an infected copy of afd.sys) but now everytime the computer starts up in normal mode it gives a BSOD about IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Looking at the dump file in BlueScreenView shows ntkrnlpa.exe and raspptp.sys to be the culprits. I am able to run windows in safe mode. I'm not sure how to proceed because I only have one system restore point which doesn't fix anything. Thanks for any help.
Never mind, I fixed the problem by replacing afd.sys with the original afd.sys that came with Windows Vista.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/430638/bsod-in-normal-windows-vista-mode-after-stupidly-running-combofix-without-guidance/
Hi all Back in April I posted about a problem I was having with Vista I still am people read my post but there were no replies In a nutshell I have a Windows Home Basic new Compaq desktop an Apple Airport Extreme WPA Personal and a Linksys modem The last of these provide me a DSL internet connection on my MacBook and Nokia N So here s the problem I have accounts on the Vista machine users and one unlocked Administrator When I boot up all of the user accounts are able to connect to the Airport network and see the internet If I log on as the administrator the PC will usually connect to the network and apparently to the internet judging by the little globe sign in my system tray by the screens but disconnects from the network almost instantly It cannot be connected again thereafter and if I log out of Administrator and back in can't internet, see administrator Vista: user accounts as Vista: user accounts see internet, administrator can't any of the users they cannot access the network either Reboot required Having an Administrator account that can t see the internet is a major hassle if not a risk in terms of updates I can t believe I m the only person with this issue Help Thanks nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/vista-user-accounts-see-internet-administrator-cant.731160/
Does using User Account passwords on Vista make it more secure? It sure is annoying to have to enter it all the time!
We have two logins on our computer both setup as Admin, and I read on here or another geek board that passwords should be used on Admin accounts. Is this true or does it not make a big deal since our firewall is pretty good.
Yes, its always a good idea, malware and viruses can easily by pass a firewall if you browse to dodgy side by accident and they can get control of your computer. I would also recommend keeping UAC on to ensure further security.
I just got my computer back from my IT department. They reformatted it because they needed to change something in the network start-up script. It now runs at about 1/4 the speed it used to with start-up times runing 7-8 minutes on average. Also, half the stuff I try to run just randomly crashes. Any ideas?
Assuming, it's a company computer, why don't you complain to your IT people?http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/349236/vista-running-really-slow-and-many-applications-crashing-randomly/
Hello every body i am using windows vista ultimate SP1 with following configuration:-
Processor : Core 2 Duo
MotherBoard : ASUS G31
RAM : 4GB
G.Card : nVidia 1GB
on my newly installed windows i am facing a severe problem that when i boot window after welcome screen a blank screen appears and with a curser.
I am unable to see explorer. To use explorer i have open task manager then explorer. Thats cumbersome...
Please help!!! :
I just installed windows vista ultimate
The problem is I cant get the korean language to work.
I installed it and added the language
but i cant get the language bar to appear on the task bar.
what do i do?
Hi, how did you install it? I ask because there are a number of reasons for the language bar to not show. I take it right clicking on taskbar and selecting Toolbars "language bar " is not an option. Under Msconfig does ctfmon show up in your startup's, you need it for the language bar to work. Copy below into notepad and then "save as" call it language.reg and save desktop double click on the saved file to merge into registry Reboot to take effect:-
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Wipe the drive and reinstall Vista (this is to get rid of any cracks you may have tried). If you still can't activate the proper way (How to activate Windows Vista) then contact microsoft. This thread will be closed.
Ok so basically with EVERY device including my mouse and dvd drives whenever I plug something in it says that windows could not find the driver. I then point it to c:/Windows/system32 . It says that it finds them but cannot install them
Can anyone help me!? This is really urgent and re-installing is not a possibily as i cannot put dvds into the dvd drives.
Hi, by default the Driver for the Devices will be in C:\Windows\WINSXS and C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore. Try to Install the Drivers from these Locations.
As you have mentioned you using 64BIT OS verify that the drivers are Digitally Signed
If you do not have the right Drivers then you are messing up with your Computer.
I can Just try with Workaround!!!

I'm helping a friend online with this problem. The virus is so nasty, that it actually penetrates through on safe mode (giggity!). She was in safe mode, after running iexplorer.exe version of RKill; proceeded to run malware bytes. As it was running, the system just shut down on its own. The laptop probably ran out on battery life.....but the same thing happened in safe mode again after she got it plugged in. We're trying in normal mode, iexplorer.exe version of rkill and running the scan again to see if it does the same thing. I'll post again if that fails...which I hope it doesn't, but just to ask, anyone else experience this problem?http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/403025/windows-vista-recovery-shut-off-computer-in-safe-mode-while-running-malware-bytes/

If you can figure out how to get to it on a laptop, you could remove the battery from the CMOS for a minute and reinsert it. I think that might change the password setup.http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/296780-locked-administrator-vista-limited-access-user.html

You might try installing the audio codecs:
After accpeting the terms you need to download the first driver from any of the 3 servers on the right.

I believe that if your using Vista x64 ultimate there are many problems remaining as some of the software you were using on XP will definitely not work on this new operating system. I am also having problems, but I am now looking for software applications on the internet that are only developed for the new Vista operating system.
Recently I was trying to setup Windows Fax amp Scan and was making setting changes to WFS and STUPIDLY locked even myself administrator out of being able to make certain changes without getting told I don't & Vista Permission Scan Fax Ultimate Problem - Windows have permission to make those changes I did this by changing a permission setting that I thought was to lock out all other users from making changes to my settings but now even has me locked out After I open WFS I try to open Fax settings under Tools only to get the following You don't have security permissions to complete this operation Contact your fax administrator for more information When I OK that I get Access is denied amp Access is denied under details It is now useless and I've gotten nowhere Vista Ultimate - Windows Fax & Scan Permission Problem myself trying to correct my problem I went into Programs and Features and tried to uninstall WFS only to find I could only turn off the feature Tried that anyway and turned it back on hoping it would need to reinstall itself from the DVD but it just reactivated with the same problem still there I'd rather not print out everthing just so I can fax it Does anyone know how to correct this so I can use this feature
You'll have to burrow through the registry to locate the keys that are affected - then take ownership of them in order to change the permissions back. Have you tried a System Restore to back before you made the changes? That should be the easiest fix.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/128700/vista-ultimate-windows-fax-scan-permission-problem/

I've run through the Control Panel/Power Mgt troubleshooter on these forums. All my settings seemed to be correct. Using the CMD prompt and powercfg -devicequery wake_armed yields one device: my logitech g15 keyboard. (Using powercfg -a shows that the only sleep state available is S3. That is correct for my motherboard, an Abit IP 35 pro.)
If forced into sleep, the keyboard will wake it up.
The problem, again, centers on the automatic sleep entrance. Currently set for 1 hour of idle.
It seems to me that the machine never thinks it's idle. Is that where I should start? Finding processes which are running in the background?
I'd appreciate any help.
Is it possible that the problem started after you switched to a wireless mouse/keyboard ?
For some reason unknown after a Vista patch my system no longer enters quot Sleep mode quot I'm positive it is the result of a patch and I'm rather bitter about the fact that after months of waiting no fix has been released Before anyone asks NO the system is not entering some sort of passworded screener which I've seen replies for on some other peoples post on this matter Situation is simple I installed a Windows Vista critical update and after doing so I can no longer enter sleep mode neither through put Vista mode I it off in when x64 Ultimate logs Sleep quot Start - gt Shutdown - gt Sleep quot OR by simply leaving my pc idle for a period of time and letting it attempt Vista Ultimate x64 logs off when I put it in Sleep mode Hibernation Sleep mode it's as though in the patch Microsoft have simply messed up somewhere and made sleep mode or hibernation across the board quot log off quot instead Simple fix I would assume but no fix for months I'd really like this fixed in an upcoming patch
update your bios, it mightnt support the new update.http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/246605-vista-ultimate-x64-logs-off-when-i-put-sleep-mode.html
Hi so I really like the vista sleep mode, but I have a question. Would using sleep mode often cause a slow down? I don't want my computer to be noticeably slower. I have vista ult. 3 gig ram, 9800 GTX, Intel e6400.
also how can I make a shortcut for sleep...like win key+s for example.
Hello Isikh, and welcome to Vista Forums.
It should not affect the performance of your computer except that it will be faster to startup when you want to use it instead of from a complete startup.
This tutorial will help show you how to create a sleep shortcut.
Hope this helps,
Is there a way of running IE in elevated mode for domain user PERMANENTLY without adding them as a local admin?
Looked at a lot of forums but no joy so any help would be much appreciated.

That said, in my opinion this really is not a right forum to discuss torrents, P2P applications and any problems users have to use them.
Please use other forums to discuss this type of problems.
I installed Vista Ultimate Edition x64 nearly 1 month ago and had some problems. After installing programs from CDs when I try to start programs, I have some strange error. It says that MCI drivers weren't installed. However, when I checked my System directory, I found winmm.dll which serves MCI functions to the OS.
Also I installed and run same programs at Vista Home Edition x32 and successfully worked. I think the main problem is x64 and x32 incompatibility but I couldn't find a way to solve this.
Do you have any idea?
Thanks for helps.
1. Does your cd rom have 64 bit drivers?
2. Why are you running 64 bit windows?!!?!
Are there any good program which can help me to scan system and to resolve any system problem effectively? Help appreciated. My system is running very slow now.
how much memory have you got? have you defraged or done a disk cleanup ?
I have a desktop running Windows 7, with a second hard drive that I want to use to backup my laptops. The laptops are able to access the network, the internet, and the printers attached to the network. However, when I try to backup to the "backup" the laptop drive, I am asked for a login and password. The default setting is no password required for file and printer sharing. My laptop is running Vista Ultimate. I have NOT set up a login and password for the desktop. How do I access the files on the desktop from the laptop, so I can backup the laptop?
I was away from home for almost two months. When I came back home I discovered that somebody at home has changed the Administrator Password and they forgot the new password.
So I am locked out of my Dell INSPIRON N5010 laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 OS. There is no guest account set on my PC.
I also have not setup Password Reset Disc.
Can any body help me access my PC again
Thanks in advance for helping!
Why not ask around your home and get the password from the person who reset it?http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/207276-forgot-windows-7-ultimate-x64-administrator-password.html
My problem is that when I run old games (GTA San Andreas, Half Life 2 Episode 2, ect.) on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit, a rundll32.exe process starts up and eats up 100% of my CPU, which is devastating since I'm running a single core 1.6Ghz CPU. If I manage to get to task manager and terminate the process, everything returns to normal, but the process of the game (gta_sa.exe, ect.) is terminated too.
What is the problem? Bad drivers? Have I installed something nasty? Or is it just Microsoft sloppiness, since I never experienced this on Windows Vista.
Check what is running under rundll32.exe.
Bring up Task Manager -
- click "Processes" tab
- click "Show processes from all users" - bottom-left of screen
- "view" tab
- "select columns"
- check boxes for "Image Path Name" & "Command Line"
Locate the rundll32 in question.
What's listed for Image Path Name & Command Line?
So I have this OEM disk of windows vista that I bought when it came out. I want to format a computer and install windows 7 64bit ultimate on it. How do I go about using my vista liscence key for that? Is it possible to do a key transfer or something? Microsoft's website is all about windows 8 and I cant find any information

You can't, you will need to buy a Windows 7 licence.
So my motherboard fried and i had to get a new one and when my board failed it crashed my hard drive. After I installed my new mobo, it was bsod looping on startup and wouldn't repair so I tried reinstalling 7 as it was my current os and it wouldnt work as it is an upgrade cd. I tried installing vista which came with my pc and it gets stuck at 0%. I then put xp on and upgraded to vista from xp. Now i have a working vista ultimate 32 bit os but it wont upgrade to 7 and yes it is compatible as I had it before my hard drive crash. It goes up to copying files at 35% and freezes for a while until I get an error code: 0x80070017 Please help!!! Thanks!
P.S. I bought my windows 7 cd not downloaded it.

By activate I would assume you mean Enable Have you tried enabling the admin through Manage \ Local Users and Groups \ Users? If your Windows 7 is a slipstream, you may have inadvertently disabled the account in the process.

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
Click the Scanning Control tab.
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.

After changing one of three users to add in parental controls i cannot now change any of the accounts to 'administartor' from 'standard'. This means i cannot change the parental controls back after a period of 'e-grounding'!! Any ideas?
From Newbie to forum, confused and in daughters dog-house.
Hi David and welcome to Vista Forums.
If you do not have any administrator accounts to use to change an account type, then boot into Safe Mode and see if you can change the account type from within there. You should startup in the built-in Administrator account while in Safe Mode if you do not have any regular administrator accounts. You could also just create another administrator account to use instead.
For Safe Mode:
For Account Types:
User Account Type
Hope this helps,

I am having a wierd problem and was wondering if anybody has heard of this or has any information.
I am running Windows XP Pro. Yesterday, out of the blue, before windows loads, I get a box that pops up with the Windows Vista Ultimate Logo and a message "your password will expire in 10 days...and is ticking down. I don't have a password, I didn't set it up to need a password.
I did a google search and found out that this MAY have something to do with VistaDrive.exe nobody seems to be sure.
I was hit with some spyware but managed to take Running combofix Ultimate URL bit Vista in icons! shortcut 32 broke care of it using Malware Bytes and TrendMicro's Housecall For good measure I decided to run combo fix that I had downloaded a few weeks ago After ComboFix completed without finding anything suspicious I restarted and discovered the IE 's favorites bar shortcuts no longer opened when clicked I checked my favorites folder same problem I even tried to restore the Favorites Bar folder from Running combofix in 32 bit Vista Ultimate broke URL shortcut icons! a point in time last week but that did not solve Running combofix in 32 bit Vista Ultimate broke URL shortcut icons! the problem I even tried setting IE back to being default I only use IE as my browser and even reset the URL file association back to IE Still cannot get the URL shortcuts to open in IE Another strange thing the shortcut icons display a blank file instead of the blue E with gold sash Anyone else seen this My last image is from September th and I really don't want to jump back that far in time Any help would be appreciated just as a comic relief I was saying today even how much I love Vista compared to XP Ahhahahttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/270178/running-combofix-in-32-bit-vista-ultimate-broke-url-shortcut-icons/

have you tried turning UAC off in user accounts, just to see any difference
Sorry I did not know where else to post this but this problem started last night I restarted my computer and now it wont running applications. And by that I mean any exe file that doesn't require and installation. What I can do is run installers and and then run the program but I have programs that are just in a files folder and they aren't running. Anyone know how to fix this?
Since it started just last night, why not try a sytem restore from three days ago. You can always reverse the system restore if you do not like the results. I think System Restore is great for those short time duration changes. I have used mine and have been 100% successful.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/64095-windows-7-not-running-applications.html
The other day I thought it'd be a good idea to screw around with the settings on my parents' computer My parents say they can't trust me and you'll find out why My parents put a limitation in the first place for me to not w/ Control User administrator accounts problem (UAC) Account download anything malicious and around last summer I was always yelled at for using the computer at night so they put Parental Controls only the time limit from AM to PM and changed my account type to Standard User That means I can't use the computer at night even if I tried I was sick and tired of it User Account Control (UAC) problem w/ administrator accounts honestly so I thought the smart thing to do was to download an iso to burn to a disc to reset the password and or promote my account to administrator I downloaded the Trinity Rescue Kit and burnt it to a DVD in order to promote my account to administrator Little did I know the thing kind of messes up with your UAC I ignored the warnings In order to use Parental Controls you have to be a Standard User Which I updated my account's settings and well the controls didn't go away I still had the time limit and all the other stuff my parents put on User Account Control (UAC) problem w/ administrator accounts here I tried to go into the Control Panel to remove it and it did absolutely nothing When I clicked on my account's name it said I had to be a Standard User to change it I tried to change my account to a Standard one and it did absolutely nothing It remained an Administrator which I knew if I left my account as an Administrator my parents would one day find out that I've been downloading stuff and I've completely disobeyed them I later removed my parents' account's password and tried it there It didn't do anything but wipe their password oh great they're going to be more mad at me now My dad got really upset and threatened to delete my account along with all my files Here I am now on my sister's account on the machine I'm trying to access my account and type in the password but the User Account Control window pops up but the 'Yes' option is greyed out and there's no space to type in my password I rebooted into Safe Mode and saw that my account was not there I logged into my sister's account and the problem still persists On the login screen my account quot User quot will not show up when I booted it up earlier this evening it was working completely fine It said the warning that I wasn't allowed onto my account and then I logged into my sister's and rebooted and it was gone When I navigate to C Users - my account files are still there Not being able to access them because of the User Account Control window not letting me type any password or click 'yes' I have no idea what to do now I can't restore this machine back to the other date since it'll make my parents even more angry at me and I think using the DVD will just muck it up even more This is confusing me if anyone knows what they're doing and how to fix this please reply Thank you
I'm sure you do know the trouble you are in but there's really nothing else you can do but own up to the problem you have caused. Obviously the controls were put in place to prevent problems associated with nonresponsible actions.
Be prepared to have to do a Factory Restore on the computer/s if the login for your parents and/or your sister don't work. You might need a Linux LiveCD or LiveDVD bootable disc to first save any documents/data they have saved.
To avoid such problems in the future get your own computer.

I am guessing that when you use a microsoft account to log into your windows 8 machine, it creates a profile local to your computer. You might have an issue when you setup the users account and all the "data" is setting in a different user profile. With Windows8 you can do a referesh without losing your information. Give that a try. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pchttp://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/555047/problem-with-start-menu-and-added-administrator-user/

So basically my brother put me on his domain thing and Cannot longer fails (server and anything do administrator) literally administrator logon no user it's caused me loads of problems and he doesn't want to fix them So now i'm stuck between a rock and a hard place When I try to log on as a user Jebus which is the user I currently use for most activities it says something about there being no logon servers to process Cannot literally do anything (server logon fails and administrator user no longer administrator) my request or something So I instead thought if I just created a new user and copied the files over Cannot literally do anything (server logon fails and administrator user no longer administrator) it should be fine But my Jebus user had admin rights so when I log onto the user Administrator it can't open most of my C Users folders so I can't even see what's inside the Jebus folder And when it asks for permission so I can access this file administrator credentials say they require Cannot literally do anything (server logon fails and administrator user no longer administrator) elevation and the Jebus credentials do nothing So now I'm just stuck on this administrator account and I can't do anything Please helphttps://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/adf4a798-9577-4b2a-add6-bfb529bbede6/cannot-literally-do-anything-server-logon-fails-and-administrator-user-no-longer-administrator?forum=w7itprogeneral
Hi all I was recently forced thanks Spyware to reformat my PC Pro certain when freezing running Windows XP applications and reinstall Windows XP I have Windows XP Pro freezing when running certain applications encountered problems when running image emulation software in particular Daemon Tools Pro and Alcohol PowerISO works fine The installation process runs without incident but when I run the application everything freezes and I am forced to manually power off and restart As this happens with two different applications in a near-identical fashion I presume the problem lies outside the programs I have used registry cleaning software and driver wizard programs in an effort to get all of my components running up to speed but this hasn t solved the problem Caveat In my Device Manager there are a number of devices - Standard floppy disk controller - Multimedia Audio Controller - SM Bus Controller - USB Device I m not sure how relevant the Multimedia Audio Controller may be as I am using an external soundcard which allows me to use Winamp etc without any difficulties I am also unsure as how to identify what these devices are and thus which drivers I need for them My system Intel ghz Dual Core GB Ram Windows XP Professional NVidia Geforce GTS mb I have attached my DxDiag for your reference I thank you for your time and assistance with this matter and if there s any other information please don t hesitate to ask Kind regards Adam nbsp
Just open the case of your desktop and perhaps with a little flashlight check which make and model your mainboard is, go to the manufactures website and download the drivers (usually support). This should take care of most of the ! in your device mangers list.
Hi so I just bought a new first using running applications! Windows, help time Help! My need computer from the store and My first time using Windows, need help running applications! Help! I believe it has Windows Seven on it It's alright My first time using Windows, need help running applications! Help! and I haven't run into many issues although the interface is kind of confusing and new to me Anyway I noticed that there's no Software Center like in Ubuntu and I had to look online to get some Windows installers I don't know if this is the right way to do it- it seems very unsafe If someone could point me to the Windows software manager that'd be great because I can't find it I think it's hidden in the Control Panel somewhere Anyway a lot of the programs I used to use like Pidgin GIMP OpenOffice Skype and Hulu seem to have been ported to Windows which is nice But not all of them seem to work Like Rhythmbox- I use Rhythmbox to buy music from the Ubuntu One music store and I have a fairly large collection I managed to move the files over manually from my old computer very easily since there's no DRM or anything but I'd like to be able to use my music player again Even Banshee would be a relief to have Also compiz is really slow in Windows Seven for some reason and it's hard to customize I can't find any compiz settings manager anywhere but I guess Windows might have a different name for it since it has a different name for the Home folder too It's all very confusing to me and I was hoping people could point me in the right direction Anyway sorry I'm a bit frustrated and jumbled in my thoughts but Windows Seven seems okay even though it's a bit slow right now I'm sure that can be fixed I probably just set things up wrong or something But yeah is there anything like Wine for Windows Like you can run Windows games in Ubuntu with Wine and since Ubuntu is open source there's probably a really simple way to install all the Ubuntu programs on Windows already I just don't know what it's called I've never installed Ubuntu before and I'm kind of afraid to since I don't think DELL will support it on this new Acer with Windows Seven I heard it's really easy and simple but I'm used to installing like in the software center where you just click install and enter your secure password to install more things for a few minutes Windows is really confusing with clicking next and I see ads in Internet Explorer and Firefox so I got Chrome which has also been ported from Linux I'm glad there are some familiar apps So yeah I just really need my applications back I can't really go without them or maybe there are some alternatives on Windows that are similar I don't know I don't want to be close minded but I'm sure Windows has programs for similar tasks So I guess what I'm asking is how I can get Rhythmbox Tomboy Gloobus Transmission Shotwell Openshot Brasero and Blender in Ubuntu I'm really grateful in advance for everyone who's willing to help me out I don't know how big the Windows Seven community is but I see commercials so I'm sure it's big enough to handle this small issue Any help or pointers you can show me would be very appreciated
Sorry for double posting, but I can't get some of my Windows games to work, either. Soldat and Darwinia worked just fine in Wine, but I can't get the compatibility right in Windows Seven? Which mode do I use? Again, sorry for the lengthy post, I'm just really frustrated right now.http://www.sevenforums.com/software/105078-my-first-time-using-windows-need-help-running-applications-help.html
This may be related to the recent Windows update.
Just recently, I noticed that, sometimes, I had to click an application twice to start it.
At first, I attributed it to typos, but when it happened quite a few times, I investigated.
I saw that Task Manager showed the application running, but there was no window on the desktop.
The application doesn't matter and it's not easily reproducible - happens once or twice a day at random.
I'll be a bit more vigilant now that I noticed it and see if I can track it down better (32-bit or 64-bit apps, for example). The last one was a 32-bit application. And I started two applications in rapid succession.
(I'm on 64-bit 8.1).
Probably moved off screen

Some times I go to web sites and I get recover error messages the web site will reload or IE will close or page will not display.I will get recover error messages and IE checking for solution.
Other one is some sites stop working do not know why? May be most web sites are coded for IE 7.
Some web sites that are slow or do not display proper if you click on compatibility mode it works okay
Is this bug in IE8 or most sites are coded for IE 7.
So we are a company stuck a few years user Windows 7 in Administrator vs. Standard in the past We give all of our approximate users currently on XP Pro SP admin rights because we Standard user vs. Administrator in Windows 7 have about different computer models at any given time and have images to maintain With all of the software we have on our network and our limited IS staff on the support side aside from server guys network guys etc we have service desk guys and desktop support guys in our corporate office and we have about remote sites and only of them have IS support mostly with one person or one part-time person at each site we just can't seem to find that magic bullet for just suddenly taking everyone's admin rights away or just suddenly stop shipping computers with admin rights With Windows I thought I had seen the light with UAC - ship users their computers with limited user accounts and remote in to input administrator credentials to install all of Standard user vs. Administrator in Windows 7 their software for them However after lowering my UAC level to quot Never notify quot suddenly I can install Java Roxio etc So today I attended a hour workshop on Windows and the instructor told me that if you do not use Group Policy to disable the UAC quot slider quot then user's can install software and do anything else that they want to That just doesn't sound right to me If that's not right why am I able to install software on my PC as a regular user without inputting admin info

With all of the software we have on our network and our limited IS staff (on the support side aside from server guys/network guys/etc, we have 3 service desk guys and 2 desktop support guys in our corporate office, and we have about 10 remote sites and only 5 of them have IS support, mostly with one person or one part-time person at each site), we just can't seem to find that magic bullet for just suddenly taking everyone's admin rights away or just suddenly stop shipping computers with admin rights. With Windows 7, I thought I had seen the light with UAC - ship users their computers with limited user accounts, and remote in to input administrator credentials to install all of their software for them. However, after lowering my UAC level to "Never notify," suddenly I can install Java, Roxio, etc...
So today I attended a 3 hour workshop on Windows 7 and the instructor told me that if you do not use Group Policy to disable the UAC "slider," then user's can install software and do anything else that they want to. That just doesn't sound right to me.
If that's not right, why am I able to install software on my PC as a regular user without inputting admin info?
Your PC at work or at home...
Were you logged into a limited account when installing the software? If you are logged in as an Administrator than UAC will either notify you when an app is trying to access System files or needs to be elevated to access critical components...

Access is denied because you are trying to access those folders from a different account than the one that those folders belong to.
You have to "take ownership" of those folders in order to access them:

I have few programs that I wanted to run as Administrator from startup for normal user.
I tried Task Scheduler and it worked but I didn't have icons for these programs in a tray so I could not control these programs.
Quite a bit of searching with google brought me to
It is command line program which allows to run programs as different users.
In my copied this program to C:\WINDOWS directory and created shortcuts in Startup folder.
Example shortcut command line:
C:\Windows\CPAU.exe -u Administrator -p Password -ex "C:\Program Files\GBMPro8x64\GBMAgent.exe" -lwp
You just need to change Administrator and Password to your real username and password and it works great.
Hope it helps.
My windows freezes after a while, I cannot open anymore applications or open background applications and I cannot shut it down either (except for force shut downing). This is a real problem, I always have to force shutdown the computer. It does not display any error messages.
It is my understanding that, with Windows 32-bit, the OS can only access up to 4gb of Ram. To get access to larger amounts of Ram (such as 8, 16, or 32gb), one must have Windows 64-bit installed.
Regarding applications though... if running a 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows, is the application limited to only being able to use 4gb of ram?
Nope because 32-bit applications won't ever need more than 4 GB.http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/283420-memory-limit-32-bit-applications-running-64-bit-windows.html
I was trying to explain to a friend yesterday the difference between the powers of the hidden Administrator account and a user account with Administrator privileges; but, I don't feel I was successful. I searched for an article on the 'net that would explain one vs the other; but, I could not find one.
Can someone point me to such an article?
This is an article on how to enable/disable the Built-In Administrator account but at the beginning it explains the difference between the two which, it seems, boils down to whether or not a UAC prompt is needed to gain elevated permission:
I'm having problem on a brand new computer.
It's running with windows vista 32bit service pack 1, in Dutch.
I can't run .exe(win32 cabinet self extractor)files I downloaded from microsoft.com, like visualc++ redistribuable package(vcredist_x86), windows installer or .netframework.
When I run the application it asks me for authorisation, and I accept, then the windows doesn't show up, but I can see the related process in the task manager.
Nothing happens, and this is annoying cause I need visual c++ for other applications.
Why doesn't it say anything? Even if the file was corrupt or something it would show an error window.
I spent the night trying to find a solution, but I had no success, if you have any advice for me I'd really appreciate it.
I wish I could help you. Wow! On new computer??
Why don't you post your problem in Vista's forum?
Best of luck to you.
I have one user that is the Computer Administrator account.
I set up a password on for it and then removed the password (this was done to test something on my network and the password is not really needed) and now my Computer Administrator account is hosed.
It is behaving as if it is a limited access account. I can not remove or add software, nor can I access programs that I should have access to.
I have logged off & back on. I have rebooted multiple times. Nothing has corrected this.
I've searched but can not find the answer to this specific problem that I have.
Wondering if I can make a new computer administrator account, log into it & then delete the current one (hosed up one) that I have and be back in business? Or does this sound like a more complicated problem?

How To Create and Configure User Accounts in Windows XP
I currently have 5 user accounts on my windows vista 32-bit computer and I needed to create a new account. So, I logged onto the administrator account and created a new user account. Then, I logged off the administrator account and tried to log onto the new account. However, I received the following message
The user profile service failed the log on.
User profile can not be loaded.
After receiving the message I restarted the computer and attempted to log onto the new account but I received the same message.
Please help me.
Thank you in advance.

When I got up today and tried ot log onto my computer at around noon, I got this funny little pop up error, that says:
16 Bit MS-DOS Subsytem
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt. The System file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Windows applications. Choose 'close' to terminate the application.
And I am given an option to Ignore or close. I don't know where this error came from, as I am usually a pretty safe person online, and run Spy/adware sweeps almost every night; and have done my best to keep up with Anti-Virus software despite Mcaffee subscription running out aroudn2 months ago. I can post a screen shot..if I can ever figure out how. Oh, and I can stull run programs..just..only through task manager, I have no icons or start menu on my desk top :'(

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable in Windows 8
I purchased from does Windows Store 8.1 to upgrade recognize not Administrator when my to Windows 8 attempting User account a Inspiron directly from dell com on nbsp It was delivered on nbsp It had Windows as the operating system nbsp Store does not recognize my Administrator User account when attempting to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 I had assumed that it would have the latest version of Windows when it arrived since had been issued in October I opened the Store app and the upgrade to Windows was not available to me nbsp I understood that this was a problem for others and did not pursue it further at that time Store does not recognize my Administrator User account when attempting to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 nbsp I was out of town for weeks in January and did not use the laptop during that week period nbsp When I returned I opened the Store and found prominently placed the invitation to the free upgrade to I was signed in using the Administrator account and when I hit the download button for I was given the message quot You need to use an account with Administrator privileges to install Windows try logging in with the user account of an administrator of this PC and try update again quot nbsp I verified that my account had Administrator privileges and tried again and got the same message I created another user account and gave it administrator privileges and tried the download again signed in on that account and got the same message nbsp I called technical support and for over hours over different days the technician attempted to resolve the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling Windows updates When that failed to resolve the problem he quot refreshed quot my PC which I understood put it back to the status it was in at time of delivery He then had to do all the Windows updates approximately and tried to download again nbsp This did not change the error message when trying to download to nbsp At that point I was told that they were elevating it to a technical team who would research all the logs from my machine and come up with a solution nbsp They indicated that they would call me back when a solution is found Although my Administrator account was not recognized when attempting to do the download it recognized the Administrator role when the technician needed administrative approval to do all the uninstall and reinstall activities when trying to resolve the issue Has anyone else experienced this problem nbsp Has it been resolved and if so how was it resolved nbsp
You are not alone. Several have had the same problem with no resolution. I think it has something funny to do with the User Accounts. Making a second account with admin privleges doesn't work. I would try to reinstall the OS from the hidden image and try again. A Refresh like Dell tried will not do the trick, as it retains much of the data from before the Refresh; you need a clean start. Don't do anything witht the Admin Account other than let Windows set it up and set your password. All updates need to be installed before the upgrade will show in the Store. I have upgraded five Win 8 installations and have had zero problems.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/f/4677/t/19544229

Dell's usually have built in diagnostics, please run those before doing anything else.
In the event that you can't get to the diagnostics, please run a hard drive diagnostic from these instructions: http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html
There are several other steps that you can try to fix things - but don't do that until you post back with the results of the hard drive test. You can easily wipe the contents of the drive, so please wait for us to discuss that.
Hi, I have a PC which has no new hardware and fully up to date AV on it but as of yesterday it will not boot. It will go as far as the Welcome Screen and then no further. It will not boot into Safe Mode either, gets as far as the files loaded and then no further. There is no recovery partition on the machine but I do have the install disk available. Reinstalling really would be my last option as I want to avoid kaving to do all the updates and patches for everything. Any ideas to get the machine booting again very gratefully received.TIA
Please read this tutorial fully, and follow all steps.

can you post the Make, and Model of your computer, Since you have the Windows CD, you can boot into the Recovery Environment, and try a System Restore to a time before the boot issue occurred, you may also want to do a chkdsk also from the recovery environment.
Boot from the Windows CD, when you get to the "Install" window, down at the bottom left you will see Repair My Computer, select it.
Once in the recovery environment, you will see numerous tools at your disposal, I would start with running chkdsk first. Open the Command Prompt, then type the following bcdedit | find "osdevice" this command with give you the windows drive letter, it may be C, D,
Once you find the windows drive letter, type the following, chkdsk [your drive letter] /r
So it will look something like this: chkdsk C: /r

I would try using a pre-boot disk like Kaspersky or Hirens and run a scan on this machine first. Just to make sure there isn't a virus or malware that is preventing it from booting. Is the hard drive making any abnormal noises? It is also possible the hard drive may be going bad.
