Sony Vaio Faulty Hard Drive

Q: Sony Vaio Faulty Hard Drive

Hi all,

I have exactly the same problem with my sons Sony Vaio laptop as the member in thread:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/909494-my-laptop-says-has-no-2.html

The Hard drive is a Seagate ST9160821AS but having looked on the net it would appear this model is not made anymore.

Does anyone know of a different model HDD that I could purchase that would be compatible with this laptop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Phil.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey,
Does anyone know how to open up the Vaio VGC-V3S????

Its an all in one system and i cannot see a way to get into it to change the DVD drive (plus wouldnt mind a new graphics card if i can get one to fit!!! lol) which is totally screwed. Done everything from Formatting the system back to day one, new drivers etc etc

Nothin works so ideally i need to get in the damn thing and swap it with a standard laptop style dVD drive

Any one know how to get in the damn things??

I've got a Sony Vaio PCG-F190 laptop, and it's hard drive is shot. I've got no warranty of any sort on it, and right now I have a $0 budget for it, but I want to get it working. I've got a couple of rather old spare hard drives sitting around, but I don't know if they are compatible with laptops (they came from old clunky desktops). I've also got a usb hard-drive, but I don't know how to boot from that. Any help on just getting this running would be really great. Thanks!

A:Sony Vaio without a hard drive?

the hardrives from PC's will be 3 1/2" drives and you need 2 1/2" for laptops
there is a way to boot from USB
I'll try and find - not sure if it will work on the laptop though

I have a Sony Vaio model VPC-71912L and am having problems with a slow start up (expired warranty repair). One of the Vaio Care tests I did, was on the hard drive and it reported "CRITICAL - There is at least one item that needs immediate attention". Nothing else about how to fix/repair. Anyone have any ideas? Not sure what to do next.

The fix for any hard drive failure is to replace it. Here's a list of 500GB and bigger drives with a SATA interface: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...CodeValue=355:7776&PropertyCodeValue=360:7801

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR220E operating Windows Vista. After shutting down my laptop and turning it back on, a black screen appeared with a cursor blinking in the top left corner of the screen. After pressing F12 and attempting to reboot the internal hard disk drive the following message has appeared and has stayed on the screen for about 30 minutes at this point:

Yukon PXE v5.17.2.3 (20061031)
(C)Copyright 2003-2006 Marvell(R). All rights reserved.
Pre-boot eXecution Environment (PXE) v2.1
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

At the next line, there is a blinking cursor. What should I do to correct this? Thank you.

A:Sony Vaio Laptop Hard Drive

"I heard of the freezer trick, will it work?"...

This "trick" was first indended to be used on the older desktop hard drives. I haven't tried it on laptop drives at all... If you really needed your files, they should have been backed up. Today, with the use of a USB backup device like an external CD/DVD burner or a thumb drive, there is no excuse to have to loose valuable data at all

I have a Sony VAIO vgn-ar590e, and I recently installed a second hard drive (not the one carrying the OS). Prior to this, my laptop had an empty bay for the second hard drive, since the repair shop told me it was bad, so I had them remove it. I recently bought this second hard drive (Seagate ST9320421AS 320Gig SATA, 7200RPM)m and installed it. I checked the CMOS setup, and it sees the second drive, I can find it in Device Manager, but Windows Vista does not show it in Windows Explorer. How do I get it recognized?

A:Sony Vaio/Vista(?) does not see new hard drive

Goto Control Panel -> Computer management then disk management. If windows is recognising it then you should see it in there then you can assign it a drive letter and then start using it. I'd image it will be Disk 1 and say unassigned on it.

OK Guys, I have just about had it...

I have replaced hundreds of hard drives over the past few years on a variety of different computers, usually through the process of imaging the original with Acronis then moving the image to a new drive...

95% of the time, it goes flawlessly, except with older Compaq desktops and now an older Sony Vaio. (PCV-RS220)

The original drive is a 120GB Seagate. It does boot.

The bios will not recognize any new hard drive (IDE) that I put in this system, it continuously says 'Primary Master Failed'. I have tried 2 western digital drives, one 250GB and the other 160GB. I placed the image on the new drives and neither will boot. It's not a matter of a bad image, the BIOS simply will not recognize the drives.

I am pulling my hair out!!! Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Hello,
So my laptop's hard drive needs to be replaced. I need help finding one in that I'm looking for something that may last. My lap top model number is VPCF126FM and it is a song vaio. I know very little about computers, but we were hoping to buy one and have someone put it in. We just wanna make sure our person doesn't put a crappy part in so we would rather buy it for him to replace with us present. I know that seems like overkill... Anyways all I know is that any SATA hard drive should do, but I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.

A:Need help with selecting a laptop hard drive for a Sony VAIO

Tough right now. The top seven hard drive factories in the world were under water in a National flood from September to December... and the prices of what drives are still available have gone way up... Only Toshiba, as far as I know, escaped the flood.
You need to know if your current hard drive is and IDE or SATA, first.
Your best choices are Western Digital, Seagate, and Toshiba. Avoid Hitachi, Samsung, Maxtor, and any other brands. Then try to find something in the 160 GB to 250 GB if long term use is important. You can find laptop SATA hard drives these days from 80 GB to 800 GB, but be prepared to pay a premium. Were it my computer, I would look for a 250 GB Western Digital black, or Toshiba, or Seagate, or Western Digital Green in that order. I would not install any other brand. There are good online stores in USA, Great Britain, France, Canada, and several other countries.
So tell us more.

Hi guys I ve just popped open my Sony Vaio NR J S laptop to put a new hard drive inside and my setup looks like this sorry in advance for the bad quality images IDE quot gb Hard Drive I haven t fitted a hard drive before but have done a lot of research online before I finally gave in The problem is my setup doesn t seem to look like anyone elses I have the caddy and my new hard drive ready to go but what is the circuit board piece for It slots nicely into the IDE slot on the mother board but Vaio in problematic! hard Sony new Installing drive it doesn t fit on the hard drive properly As far as I Installing new hard drive in Sony Vaio problematic! knew it was a case of putting the new hard drive in the caddy fastening it all and lining it up and sliding it in the IDE slot but it won t fit which leads me to believe the circuit board must play a serious part no way Sherlock I know If anyone could shed some light on exactly how I install this I ll be grateful nbsp

A:Installing new hard drive in Sony Vaio problematic!

The circuit board came with the new drive? If so that's odd. Where did you get this drive from? Why only a 40GB? But from the specs it would appear the hard drive interface is SATA not PATA(IDE), maybe they expect you to remove the PATA circuit board and use the SATA circuit board with the hard drive, but there's odd that they'd do that.

Also please do not use profanity, this is a family oriented oriented forum. I've edited your post.

A:reformatting my hard drive (windows xp, sony vaio)

It sounds like you are not booting from the cd . . Prior to installing, enter BIOS ( Setup ) and make sure the CD/ROM the first boot device. Also disconnect all external peripherals except the keyboard and mouse, and be sure those are not USB.

Once you set your BIOS to boot first from cd . . when it restarts you will see a black screen with a prompt "Strike any key to boot from cd" . . do that and you will be able to delete partitions and recreate the ones you want and proceed to formating and installing XP

That message can pass quickly, so have a finger on the keyboard when you boot. This will delete all data on the drive so be sure you have your important data backed up.

This is a good guide to reinstalling XP . . you might want to print it for reference during the install.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp

You will have to reload drivers and applications, After the installation, you will need to download and install the MicroSoft Critical Updates. Prior to connecting to the internet you should enable the XP firewall.

If you want to save your files and settings, you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media. This is a good guide to using the FAST wizard

A:Sony Vaio System & Hard Drive Total Failure

I don't have all the answers but let me start with Windows XP. I'm guessing you have never installed Windows XP on an SATA hard drive before. If you are starting a business, you should get up to speed on this. First, before you "downgrade" from Vista to XP you should make sure the laptop has XP compatible drivers available otherwise you will not be able to get all the hardware features to work. If this laptop doesn't appear in Sony's website, you will have trouble finding the appropriate drivers if they even exist and there is a possibility they don't. Check Sony's other national websites. If the drivers don't exist, don't bother to try to install XP.

Windows XP will not recognize most SATA hard drives unless you install SATA drivers at the F6 prompt near the beginning of the Windows installation process. Unfortunately, this requires the use of a now obsolete floppy drive that modern laptops do not come with. Another method is to create a slipstream disk that combines your XP installation CD with the SATA/RAID drivers and install XP from that. Do a web search for instructions on how to do so. Another possibility is to change the hard drive controller mode from AHCI to IDE mode if your BIOS has that option. It might not.

That said, if you are trying to install XP merely for testing purposes, I understand but if not, you should reinstall Vista or move up to Windows 7. Once again, you will need Windows Vista or Windows 7 compatible drivers respectively so you will need to locate a Sony website that has Windows 7 compatible drivers. I'm talking about motherboard/chipset drivers, sound drivers, video drivers, LAN drivers, etc.

Regarding the differences in hard drive sizes between what the manufacturer's list it as and what Windows sees it as, that has been well documented over the years and I won't go into the details. Someone else might explain it but you can also search the site or the web for dozens of existing explanations.

The two hard drives you see, HDD 0 and HDD 1 are partitions of the same physical hard drive. One may be a recovery partition and the other is probably the OS partition. You may be able to use the recovery partition to reinstall Vista if it is still intact. That's what you should try first but if I read correctly, you already tried this.

I want to back up most of the programs and Data and restore it on a new 40GB hard drive,(not partitioned.) in a newly installed XP from the system CD

What is the best way to do this?

And what is the procedure for setting up the new hard drive, once physically installed, ready for new system install.

Well the BIOS for that board is dated 2002 so I would guess you can go above the 127/137GB barrier the older boards use to have. You'll have to make sure the hard drive you buy is Parallel ATA(PATA) IDE to be compatible.

Hi there.

For the physical replacement I found these instructions in Sony knowledge base and I hope they could help you out:
https://docs.sony.com/release/989201...es_HDD_CRU.pdf

As for the factory settings, on most of the laptops there is an hidden recovery partition (used to create recovery disks) which you can try to access it by pressing the F12 or F11 key (depending on the exact model) while booting your laptop and I think from there you can restore your laptop to factory settings.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

A:how to install a 40gb hitachi hard drive into a sony vaio f610

Welcome...

Installing the hard drive should be pretty easy. (I'm assuming you know where the hard drive is located on your laptop... because I have no idea)

All you really need to do is plug it... boot it (with your installation disk in the floppy/cd drive) and install your OS. Your OS installation software will contain all the neccasary software to partition and format your drive)

It shouldn't take you more than an hour or two start to finish.

Why does Toshiba and Sony Partition their hard drives so that the Root drive is the smallest drive i.e. My neighbors Sony VAIO has a 250 GB hard drive and the C: drive is only 50GB. The Toshiba Qosmio with a 320GB hard Drive partitions the C: drive @ 46GB.
This makes no sense to me but then they must have a logical reason which this old fart can't figure out. Can anyone out there explain this?

A:Solved: Hard Drive Partitions on Toshiba Qosmio and Sony Vaio

No real good reason, thats just the way they choose to do it, one slight advantage is you can use the larger partitions for storing most of your data, if you ever need to reinstall the OS the data on the other partition will not be disturbed. Not sure why them made the OS partition as small as they did.

My self, I keep important data in at least 2 different places, on different hard drives or storage devices, that way if a hard drive fails, I still have a copy of my data.

I was never a big fan of partitions on hard drives, if the hard drive fails you lose it all anyway. The only reason I use partitions is to install different OS's so I can multi boot into the OS I want.

Old fart myself...

A month ago or so I made a copy of the recovery partition using the Windows option to create recovery unit, and when it finished I chose the option to delete recovery partition from the internal hard drive.

A new 25 GB hard drive appeared, everything was fine.

Now I would like to sell this laptop but I don't know how to put the recovery partition back in its place or if it's even possible.

I know the backup it's complete because the data size t's the same and when i tried it, the restore was from the scratch, even with the sony wizard before the windows configuration.

Any ideas? thanks

A:Put Windows 8 recovery inside laptop hard drive, Sony Vaio

Just give the buyer a set of the restore discs. If you want to restore it out of the box, you need to use the Sony Recovery out of the box option. The 25gb partition is probably due to having Windows 8.1 on it, if you have installed 8.1.

A:Sony Vaio formatted hard drive & windows recovery media- cant install

YOu would not want System Recovery Options to boot the Recovery Disks. Put the first one in the drive, reboot and press the F12 key until you receive a Boot Menu, choose DVD drive to boot - unless you have a EFI BIOS in which case you should boot the DVD as a EFI/UEFI DVD drive.

Once you successfully boot the disk it should start Recovery, prompting for the subsequent disk(s).

If this fails then boot into System Recovery Options to open a Command Line to run Diskpart Clean Command which can overcome problems running Recovery media.

Be aware that Factory Recovery is a grossly inferior install larded with bloatware and duplicate utilities that interfere with better versions built into Win7. For that reason most tech enthusiasts prefer to Clean Reinstall Windows 7 to get true Win7 performance. We can help you do this if you want. It discusses in Step 1 how to find the reinstallation media.

Yes, it should work. You won't get the full speed of the SSD due to the laptop's SATA controller only being SATA 2(3GB/s) but it should work and be a lot faster.

Hi there
for nearly every Sony Vaio model use the ASIAN Site -- they've even got hard to find stuff like the drivers for the Dual Sony MMC SDHC card reader.

Original Drivers and Applications for VPCEH/EJ Series (Windows 7 64-Bit) : Download : Sony Asia Pacific

(Other models too -- I was just chasing down stuff for a model I've been using).

Forget about those VILE sites that sucker you in to "Free Driver Search" -- and when they find something you have to PAY to access the relevant area (We call this stuff "Sneakerware" and it's becoming more and more prevalent - they say FREE DOWNLOAD-- but that's all that's free is the Download !!!!!)

Don't use DriverMax or sites like those any more. All this stuff is FREEWARE anyway.

Cheers

A:Sony Vaio restore to a new Hard Disc

F8 does not provide an option to perform a factory recovery since F8 is just a list of advanced startup options for Windows which all Windows computers have.

For Sony Vaio models the key to press to access factory recovery is usually F10.
Full details here: Cannot start the VAIO Recovery Wizard because the computer will not start to the operating system.

Hello ffrustrated and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry to hear you're having all these issues. Couple of questions for you. ( Well, actually, several questions. )

1. When you got your Vaio did you buy it new?
2. Did you create the Vaio recovery disks when you first got the computer?
3. How long ago was it that you went to Sony to get it fixed?
4. Did the repair facility give any warranty on the repairs?
5. What was wrong with it?
6. With the machine turned off, can you access the Vaio Care software by clicking the ASSIST button at the top of your keyboard?

Sorry for all the questions but it might help us figure out the best course of action to get your machine up and running again.

You are probably talking about HD space. You can click on 'my computer' and see just how much free space you have. You can also run disk cleanup (check every box there) and then defrag the HD - that should clear up a bunch of space too.

The drive is showing in Disk Management and shows as working properly in Device Manager.

Event viewer shows the following error The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0.

I have so far;
Checked for available driver updates - none noted
Uninstalled the driver, rebooted the machine and let Windows re-install automatically - still no resolution to the problem.
Tweaking the registry to remove the upper filters associated with iTunes - since resorted back to standard as this did not resolve the issue.
Also removed iTunes and reinstalled

Okay, I have 15 GB C drive and 40 GB , D drive on my Laptop w/winXP. NFTS not Fat 32 system. had to get rid of system restore to get 1 GB space and I noticed that my iTunes have 2 Gb of songs. I am left with barely 2 GB of space on my hard drive and when I put something in it, it says I have no room.

I was moving my itunes folder to my D drive but I noticed it was just copying it. I dont want to fhave 2 folders of itunes and I dont want to lose my songs.

On the bottom of the drives, there is an option to compress drives. I am not familiar with this feature, is it worth doing it. Any downside to doing this?

I wish I only had one drive rather than the 2 partiton that the computer came with.

Any ideas to fix this problem? TIA

Hello there,
I am a newbie here and would appreciate any help here. I had removed and subsequently re-installed the SONY Home Network Multimedia software that was pre-installed on the my SONY laptop.
The change I did was to installed the Multi-media software on my 'D' drive instead of the default C:\Document Settings\All Users\Photo Server\VAIO Media. The reason for the change was that I want to store the photo images on the 'D' drive instead of the 'C' drive . The hard-drive is partitioned to two drives i.e 'C:\' for the operating system and program files and 'D:\' drive for data.
However after re-installing the VAIO Media photo server on the D drive, I am not able to 'see' the photo server..How do i get the photo server on the D drive to work. or be visible to the VAIO Media net work..?

Thanks for your help...

A:Sony Vaio Photo server -Installation to 'D' drive

Most systems that have dual partitioned drives are seperated for a reason, I have a compaq and the "D" drive is just for system specific drivers I/E ..don't mess with it !

I would suggest you reinstall the multimedia content back to the "C" drive and leave D alone, just make a folder for your pictures and back them up occasionally...Rhett

I pretty much lost my hope to restore my d:/ drive and all what was in it (all my data) before restoring my laptop but hope dies last.

I found this thread D Drive missing after Recovering Computer and it seems guy was smart enough to backup all his data in d:/ drive but I wasn't. I had no idea that after factory reset everything including my d:/ drive will be gone.

So, I was wondering if anyone knows some way to restore my data which was in my D:/ drive ?

Thanks an advance.

A:D:/ drive is gone after factory reset on Sony Vaio Laptop ???

Do you mean your D partition ?

Because if you had a separate D drive, you should have pulled it before you did the factory reset.

Why would you have to restore a data drive, what was wrong with it that you had to reset windows, a data drive or partition has nothing to do with windows ????

As Windows is on C, not D.

I could use some help with my laptop. I can't play any CDs or DVDs or any 3.5" disks. I'm not sure what happened. Can anyone help me with trouble shooting? Are there any settings I can change on my computer that might help it recognize the other drives?
Thanks!

Jessica,

Check Device Mgr, thru ControlPanel/System. See if those devices are even listed there, and/or if they have any notations indicating problems. Report back with what you find.

A:Sony VAIO laptop CD drive - dead or alive?

I beleive your drive is bad, but you can check by putting in a bootable cd and starting the computer from the cd and if it gets recognized and boots ok, then yes something is wrong with the operating system. If you can not boot from the drive then as we suspect it is a defective unit. One question though. What if you contact the people/company that warranty the pc and tell them where you are and maybe they can send you another cd drive. Some are rather easy to remove.

Now she has windows 7 and i put the disc in and it doesnt recognize the inserted CD. The drive is a Matshita BD-CMB UJ130AS. It has a working driver installed (device manager shows) Any other cd's that i put in work fine.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Hi! Kentucky, welcome to 7F

This is the same drive that burned the CD in question?

You may need to upgrade that driver even though it shows that it is working.
If it is a generic driver from Microsoft, do not go through Device Manager to update this driver, after the download just open the file, and follow the install instructions.
Remember to re-boot!

You can find it here, best source:
Sony eSupport - VGN-NS290J/S - Software Updates & Drivers
You will have to click on CD/DVD drives.

I have an issue with my Windows 7 Sony Vaio DVD Drive. I had the DVD Drive replaced by Sony last fortnight which worked fine up until a couple of days ago. I've tried everything I can think of to get it to work but to no result. The message I?m seeing is ?Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)?.

My system information is:
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- Intel Core i3-2310M CPU @ 2.10GHz
- Sony Optiarc DVD RW AD-7740H

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Earlier this week whilst trying to make a system repair disc in Windows, half way through making the disc, it stopped. Since then my Blu-Ray drive has stopped reading DVDs and CDs, but still reads Blu-Rays that I put in the drive. I can't boot from it and I reinstalled Windows yesterday with no difference with the drive.

Sony suggested I uninstall the drive but didn't say how to in their email. Is that really going to work?

Even when there is a CD or DVD in the drive, if I click on the drive it says 'please insert a disc into drive D:'

Thank you.

I had an issue with a dvd drive where the driver was reinsalled and volia, it worked. I would try that first. To reinstall the dvd drive, go to start and type in Device Manager and press enter. Then, expand the section titled " DVD/CDROM Drives. Then, right click on your dvd drive and select uninstall. Then, reboot your computer and it will install the dvd drive again upon boot.

If someone can help me that would be great. Yesterday a work computer only had two applications running and it completely froze up. When we restarted the computer the following message appeared:

"windows could not start because of an error in hte software, please report this problem as: load needed DLL's for Kernel"

We tried repairing Windows XP and then reformatting the system. Nothing seemed to be working. Dell is telling us that we need a new hard drive. The computer is only a year old. Does this make sense or does anyone have a suggestion on how to try and repair?

Thanks,

Hi I ve a Fujitsu MHR AT hard drive in a Samsung P laptop it s re-badged as an RM Professional P but I don t think that should be relevant here The drive is very noisy but only intermittently This can happen when the laptop is being used or when it s just doing nothing On checking Task Manager I can t find anything running that would cause the drive to be accessed Ordinarily I d assume the drive was failing but I ve a couple of these drives I recently bought a replacement an used one off Ebay and that was no better The seller was very apologetic and immediately sent me a replacement which guess what was pretty much the same This was cheap so not even worth sending back Now I find it hard to believe though it s still possible that all four are duff drives So I went looking for some disc diagnostic software on the net I tried a couple including SeaTools for Windows but the only one that ran properly was DiscCheckup from PassMark I ve been using that running short and extended self tests but it doesn t highlight any problems I m intrigued that the disc apparently runs when I wouldn t be expecting it to be doing anything Device Manager tells me its using a Microsoft driver dated Would a Fujitsu driver help I ve tried to update but couldn t find anything newer Anyone any ideas apart from throw all the drives away nbsp hard drive(s) Faulty

For the last few weeks I have had some issues with my PC I built myself a couple of years ago. The main thing is that if I let my PC sit for 10-15 minutes, when I come back to log back in, my display gets huuuge to the lowest resolution, and I usually get a "parser error message saying "value creation failed at line 422 or line 903". What is all this? Also, the computer has been running a lot slower that it used to, Photoshop will freeze, defragging will leave half the drive still fragmented, so just a bunch of annoying problems that only a restart seems to fix. Please advise, thank you all.

A:Faulty Hard-Drive?

Put the drive in a freezer bag and chill it right down for an hour , then try again.

Sometimes works, and if it does then extract everything you can. It may be your only access chance.

If nothing else, you perhaps realise now that a HDD is only temporary storage, and must be backed up. They are cheaper these days but the quality and longevity has not improved.

I will ask a Moderator to escalate your issue. A failed hard disk is covered under warranty. You may be asked to provide the hardawre fail code that the test gave you. I hope you have your recovery media available. You will need the recovery media  to recover the notebook to its factory delivered state.

A:HELP Faulty Hard drive??

It is possible that the fall damaged the hard drive read/write heads, the hardware that positions the heads, and/or possibly the disc surfaces as well. This is particularly true if the drive was powered up at the time of the fall.

If this is true, it will cost you big bucks to have a data recovery company take the drive apart and attempt to recover all or some of data from the the disc platters.

Hello, Ive just put a second hard-drive in my pc for storage. It works fine apart from it keeps dissapearing from My Computer & I have to reboot to get it to appear in the drive list.
Also Ive tried to find it in disc management & disc management wont load & just gives me this error 'Unable to connect to logical disc manager service' and 'the dependancy service or group faled to start'

Also compmanagement keeps freezing up when I ask to look at removeable storage.

Ive looked in the event log & about an hour ago I had this log ' An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.'

Windows boots and works fine except for a few occasional blue screens and freezes. But I went to go check out my hard drive today and I noticed a few scorch marks on the chip on the underside. It was on the middle and on the grey metal piece. It was brown a bit. I'm wondering if this may cause problems. I have tried running seatools and it came up with 0 errors.

A:Is my hard drive faulty/broken?

Do you have any idea how long the scorch marks have been there?

In particular, have they been there longer than you have had blue screens?

If the drive passes all Seatools tests and behaves OK in operation, it's difficult to make a case for it being defective.

Have you run a benchmark on the drive?

Barring more info, I'd assume the blue screens and freezes are unrelated.

Hey everyone So I recently picked up this external hard drive from a friend who Hard Drive, no access. Ext. Faulty was having some issues with it From his first description I thought Faulty Ext. Hard Drive, no access. I would be able to solve it myself but it turns out the problem is way more complex and unknown to me than I had thought Here's what's up -The Hard drive is a standard external one connected to the PC via a standard USB cable One regular USB connector on the PC side and a small one I believe they are refered to as 'mini-USB Type B' on the drive's side -When connected to the PC it shows up like an internal hard drive strangely not with the external devices -It cannot be browsed or accessed in any other way the windows explorer will either load -extremely- slowly without success OR freeze OR simply say it cannot be accessed -The furthest I got in terms of interacting with it was to uninstall and reinstall it via disk manager -All other attempts fail formatting is impossible as a right click leads to the problems described in point I tried to format after uninstalling installing the drive since a message came up telling me to do so eventhough I was planning to do it anyway -The drive brand is completely unknown to me it was purchased in Hong Kong and bears the label 'Buffalo' Any feedback or ideas on this topic are more than welcome Thanks in advance amp looking forward to some help Pluffi

I put in a Windows 7 installation dvd and tried to fix the startup. But it didnt help.. When i tried to explore command prompt and system restore options.. I noticed a wierd thing..

The drive assignment has been modified. My Windows partition which was originally c: is now shown as e:. And my original e: is being shown as c:.

So, If I manage to change the drive assignments, the problem should be fixed. But how can I do it? In command prompt or using Windows recovery options?

Thanks for all your help and guidance...

Hi I ve just updated my Win XP PC to Vista All was going well with the installation full clean install until I came to choose which drive to load Vista onto My C drive had a yellow warning triangle next to it and I was informed my hard drive was about to fail Thinking this could be a glitch I chose to install Vista anyway All was going well until a few hours later Vista informed me that the HD was failing and Drive as Vista Hard Faulty!!! Reports I should backup my data This message repeated several times over the next couple of hours Vista Reports Hard Drive as Faulty!!! and eventually I got an option to disable it which I did Now the HD was brand new in Dec and I had no problems what so ever in XP apart from maybe a slow transfer rate a few times when I backed up large quantities of data to my Gb external drive So is this just a software glitch Or should I RMA the drive My System consists of CPU Intel Core Duo E MB Gigabyte GA P-S i P RAM x Gb PC PSU Akasa W GPU GTO Mb HD Gb Samsung SP C SpinPoint P Thanks nbsp

My PC s hard drive recently failed and had to be replaced Thankfully I had a bit of warning as the drive Drive Accessing On Faulty Data Hard had been acting strangely for a while so I d backed up pretty-much everything that s important to me before the failure However there is one email that I received just Accessing Data On Faulty Hard Drive before the crash and which is very important to me Unfortunately I didn t have time Accessing Data On Faulty Hard Drive to back this up I would like to Accessing Data On Faulty Hard Drive try to retrieve this email from off of the faulty drive and have read quite widely on the internet that one way of possibly gaining temporary access to a faulty drive is to place the faulty drive in some ziplock bags to exclude moisture and then to deep freeze it afterwhich and once reconnected it just may work for long enough to back up important docs Some say to freeze the drive for hours and some say for at least a week but my question is no matter how long the drive is frozen for does it actually help it to work or is it just a joke with me being so stupid as to believe it I mean surely after re-connection and once the frozen drive begins to warm back up water droplets may form on its suface and circuitry which certainly wouldn t bode well for continued operation when connected to a volt supply When all is said and done I would like to retrieve my lost data but not at the expense of turning my entire PC into toast Let s suppose I keep the freshly frozen drive out of the PC case let s say on an antistatic bag and connect it to its own volt supply and not the same one as used to power the rest of the PC so that the only connection it has to the main board is by means of its SATA cable Would I be likely to do any damage this way Perhaps just worth a mention that when the drive failed it just sat there either making a clicking noise or doing nothing with the PC continually displaying the blue screen of death Ultimately can anyone suggest any better ways of gaining access to data on a faulty drive Any suggestions gratefully received nbsp

A:Dell Warranty - Faulty Hard Drive

Good question!

First, what brand is the hard drive? Just about every manufacturer has their own diagnostic software. Go to their site and download it, and test the hard drive yourself.

Then, if you feel you should still send it in, wipe it clean first, using tools such as Eraser.

Hope this helps,
~Jonathan

Hey A few months back I built myself a new PC and everything was working great for a month or so no problems at all However for the past few weeks I have been having trouble with I assume my hard drive hard faulty drive? failures, Boot and getting it to boot my OS Boot failures, faulty hard drive? Win x Heres what happens I power up my PC and it goes through the quot Asus Express Gate quot and other quot BIOS stuff quot - I notice that my HDD doesnt appear in the Sata device list on the next screen it says quot Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key quot So I restart and hit Delete to check my Boot Devices in the BIOS My Samsung HDD does not appear anywhere as if it was disconnected I open up the case to check the SATA and Power connectors which are all seated firmly in their sockets The first time this happened I quot solved quot the problem by plugging the Boot failures, faulty hard drive? HDD into a different SATA port on my MB It booted up Windows fine for a couple of days but then the same thing happened again and again I tried a different SATA port with the same results I have been having this problem for around months now and recently when I have tried reseating the SATA connector Boot failures, faulty hard drive? in a different port and rebooting it is not working right away and I have to try multiple ports with much rebooting in order to get it to work I have tried using the hard drives from my old PC which work fine and I was able to boot up Win XP I checked all my drivers were up to date - which they were So I was wondering whether any of you wonderful peoples had any ideas about what may be causing this problem and any suggestions on how to fix it I suspect that I have a faulty hard drive but I d like to try whatever I can before returning it Thank you for reading any suggestions will be much appreciated Jimmy nbsp
