Older computer with separate user accounts

Q: Older computer with separate user accounts

I have a Dell Inspiron 2200 still running XP that has an administrator account, as well as a guest account (where the important docs I need are stored). It has a faulty DC jack, and I plan on having it recycled due to the fact the repair would cost more than the computer is worth. If I remove the hard drive and put it in a USB housing, would I be able to access the info stored under the guest account without any problems?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My 250 gig hard drive has 3 separate user accounts; mine (admin) Clare and Lauren. Why is it when I install a program on mine, it appears on their's? I thought with 3 separate accounts programmes would stay separated. Forgive my ignorance or naivety for asking this, not too many sarcastic comments for what may appear a rubbish question.

A:separate user accounts

Hello Skeletor,

When programs are installed on the computer, they are installed for all users to access unless the program has a option during installation to select what users can use the program.

You can remove the program's shortcut from the All Users Start menu and C:\Users\Public\Desktop locations to not have it there for the other user accounts, but they can still access it by default in the C:\Program Files folder.

You can also change the permission level of the program's exe file to Deny access for a specific user to. You can use this tutorial below as a guide for this. Be sure not to deny all users or your user account to prevent blocking access for you as well.

Folder Permissions

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I share a computer with my family and I have my own user account on it It s an administrative account on Vista Home Premium Basically Installing user on accounts programs separate I m completely infuriated by all the pointless updates to Firefox and I want to downgrade to Firefox I d like Installing programs on separate user accounts to Installing programs on separate user accounts leave F on the family s account since they probably don t mind it However I can t seem to figure out how to install or uninstall one version of Firefox onto one account and leave the other et cetera I seem to recall being able to do this on XP where different users were given their own Program Files folder Is there any way to do something like this on Vista P S Another reason I would like to find an answer for this dilemma is because my family uses Avira AntiVir which pops up upgrade advertisements almost daily and I d very much like to get rid of it and install AVG on my account Again is this possible on Vista nbsp

A:Installing programs on separate user accounts

All you need to do is run the installation program and when it asks where to install the program, do not use the default, instead install it in a folder in C:\Users\<username>
e.g C:\Users\Otheruser\Firefox and make sure icon goes on their desktop and not the All Users desktop.

Couldn't word the title in a way that made a lot of sense, but here is my problem. Me and my girlfriend share a windows 8 laptop and have separate user accounts. As things currently are, anytime I install a program on my account, it also installs it on hers. In the case of when these programs also create an icon or shortcut on my desktop, it does on her's as well. When my girlfriend tries to delete these shortcuts on her desktop, it also deletes them from the desktop on my account. So my question is:

Is there a way to create user accounts, in which each user may install whatever they please (games and programs. obviously not referring to windows updates and such) without either user affecting the other. If not, at the very least is there a way in which we can arrange our desktops without affecting the other's. Thank you very much in advance.

Hello. A friends' laptop became infected with Internet Security 2010. I followed directions according to this tutorial:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...t-security-2010The malware seemed to have been removed. But a day after I returned the laptop to my friend, he that his User Account seemed to work fine, but that his wife's User Account was still showing signs of infection. So I re-scanned using his wife's User Account, and sure enough, there were signs of lingering infection. I then followed the same steps from the page linked above for the wife's User Account and now all seems fine.My question- do viruses/Malware usually have to be removed from ALL User Accounts? I had assumed that running anti-malware fixes did not depend on which User Accounts were being used at the time.Any enlightenment into this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Purchased new computer running windows 7. Have not yet booted it up for the first time
I'm confused on setting up the user accounts during the first go thru.
Question:
When I get to the user account set-up portion, what user accounts should I be setting up?
The built in administrator account has me confused.
There will be just 2 of us (mom & dad), that will be using the computer regularly.
Should I be creating an account named 'owner', (with full rights)?
And than maybe mom & dad with partial rights?
Help!

A:new computer & user accounts

I think you will only be setting up the adminstrator account. I'm not quite sure.
It's fairly easy to set up new accounts later on with only partial rights.

Greetings insaniak and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. ===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Please consider and do this.===================================================P2P Warning--------------------Going over your logs I noticed that you have µTorrent installed. It is pretty much certain that if you continue to use P2P programs, you will get infected again.Avoid gaming sites, pirated software, cracking tools, keygens, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs. They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites.Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and malicious Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users. The best way to reduce the risk of infection is to avoid these types of web sites and not use any P2P applications.I would recommend that you uninstall µTorrent, however that choice is up to you. I just purchased a couple of new computers to use in my office. Each computer needs to have 7 user accounts all with the same initial settings and applications available to it.

Do I need to manually setup each user account or can I create 1 and then copy it to the other 6 to save time.

I am not interested in using roaming profiles and after doing some searching it looks like this isn't overly easy in Windows 7.

In the old days, I would do the following:

1) Customize one user with all the settings and application installed as required.
2) Create all necessary users and logon once to create user files
3) Create a temporary user account with administrator access
4) Logon to temporary user account and then manually copy all the user files from the configured user account to all of the other user accounts.
5) Logon as any user and remove the temporary user

Will this procedure still work?

Thanks for the help!

I'd like to set up individual NIC settings per account in XP, something like this:

Account 1 - At Home
NetBios disabled
DNS disabled
DHCP disabled
IP configured static

Account 2 - Away From Home

DHCP enabled
IP Obtain IP Auto - DNS set to OpenDNS servers

It seems it's one setting for all accounts in XP. Is this possible to do and if so, how?

I have 5 user accounts on this computer of the 5 accounts my account and my wife's account will shut down after about 5-7mins of non use. When left on the Accounts screen it does not power down either
I have gone into power management and set everything to "never shut down"
I setup a test account and it was fine. Installed Chrome and did a bookmarks sync, I believe but not 100% it was after this that the test account started doing this as well.
My dads account has Bookmarks sync setup but this account does not power down.

This is killing me slowly this computer is the media server on my net so it always needs to be on
What is causing this?

I have full access to User Accounts in XP. I can add, delete, change, add pic, etc. I created an limited account for my wife. I can see it in the USER ACCOUNT box, along with my admin account and a guest account (turned off).

The problem is when I attempt to log off my admin account, I get a pop up box asking if I am sure I want to log off. There is no opportunity to switch accounts. If I do a shutdown, my account is the only account on the welcome screen when I reboot.

I have deleted and recreated the User account, using the default pic and my wife's pic. I have renamed the account. I have tried it with GUEST account on and off. Nothing works

Any fixes would be appreciated.

This is something that has happened a few times before but was fixed with a simple system restore I have a windows vista bit with norton antivirus and malwarebytes anti malware and user accounts screen Computer blank (except to loads administrator) the combination of the two seems to work out most of the time The problem is exactly one night my computer will be working fine then the next day i will try to sign in im not administrator and it takes a while at the welcome screen and sends me to a black screen and there i stay I can exit back into welcome screen by control alt delete and there i can sign in as administrator This time system restore is not helping and when i do get onto the admin desktop i can spot a few out of the ordinary things One is that my norton is turned off windows security alerts has a nice red X and a peak inside the security alerts it informs me that windows firewall is off norton internet security Computer loads user accounts to blank screen (except administrator) is off windows defender is off and user acount control as well and finally it says Computer loads user accounts to blank screen (except administrator) i have no internet connection This last part is strange as i am typing to you on the infected computer so apparently i do have internet I have run Combofix which didnt detect anything too obscene and i am currently running a full system scan with norton which is on yet windows security tells me otherwise I smell a virus yet i cannot find one Help would be appreciated Also the previous night i downloaded a few windows updates one of which was marked important and a few small ones I mention this as i have heard of problems that arise with windows updates nbsp

Hi

I'm surprised that nobody else has this problem, but I've searched and can't find an answer...apologies if I've not looked hard enough but I decided to post a question because this is 'urgent' to me.

I had 2 children's accounts in Win 8, and had local Parental Controls. Upgraded OS to Win 10, and now I can't manage Parental Controls in Win 10 locally, so I 'think' I need to set up 'online Profiles' for them.

However, all their game progress, profile settings, etc are on their local profiles - how can I get all this data to be on their online Profiles? I didn't want to copy and paste folders (such as AppData) without knowing that this was a 'safe' way to do this.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Rgds,
Andy

I was recently looking on techguy for a similar resolution to the below question in the forum.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/822354-ccleaner-not-working-when-i.html

I do not have problems using the CC Cleaner in my account (admin) but when I run the cleaner it does not clean Chrome. See, my girl use chrome for her internet browser on her user account and I use Firefox in my admin user account.

IN fact i have this problem in a lot with programs like Tversity, CCleaner and AVG.

Do I have install the program on every User account (hence taking up room on my PC because I am installing the same program twice)?

And when I use virus programs do they sift for infections through all the users etc?

Thanks kindly.

Hi all I can t find any mention of my problem on this or any other forum Or at least I don t think I can Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated Get Only Accounts Accounts User Cannot Admin Can DHCP, Here is my set-up Linksys DSL modem connected to an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router The modem is configured to be the DHCP server the Airport is set to bridge mode I have a new Compaq Presario desktop running Vista Home Basic with a Belkin wireless-G USB dongle All of this discussion is about wireless btw - Only Admin Accounts Cannot Get DHCP, User Accounts Can I don t have a long enough CAT- cable to connect the Airport and PC I have users set up on the PC - true unlocked administrator account and standard users When I boot up and connect as any of the standard users they automatically detect and connect to the Airport and receive IP addresses But when I change user to be the administrator the connection drops after a few seconds The Airport network is visible to Only Admin Accounts Cannot Get DHCP, User Accounts Can Vista because it is in the list of available networks But if I try to connect to it it fails and the Vista diagnostic tool tells me it has been unable to connect for unknown reason One of the standard users used to Only Admin Accounts Cannot Get DHCP, User Accounts Can have admin rights and that account had exactly the same problem If I log in from a boot-up as the administrator I also cannot connect to the network If the administrator account has been used and logged out the other users cannot connect to the Airport I have to re-boot before they can connect again I also have a MacBook and a Nokia N both of which can log into the network and get IP addresses fine If it s important I m using WPA This is not just irritating but also dangerous Because I am unable to use the internet from an administrator account I am unable to do things like updating my Norton software so I m putting myself at risk I assume the problem is rooted in how Vista treats admin users and the threats it perceives from internet access as such a user As mentioned I have Norton installed and Windows Firewall turned off A friend of mine suggested it might be because I ve got the network set as public and Vista doesn t want to connect an admin account to it but as I can t connect as an administrator to that network then I can t change the Vista setting Catch I haven t tried the registry fix for DHCP flags because I assume that if that was my problem then none of the accounts would be able to connect to the internet Has anyone come across a problem like this before I would appreciate any ideas you may have Please let me know if any detailed information would help Cheers ShuggyX nbsp

Hello

I have been chasing up an answer to this problem for a couple of weeks now and have found a number of people with same symptoms but no answer which works.

When I go to the User Accouns page the dialog box for the "Choose the Account you would like to change" is blank.

I am an administrator and there are 2 accounts on my notebook - windows 7 professional.

I can view the accounts through the run command, but would like to know why the dialog is empty and what the fix is for this.

I have done a scan for errors - none found.

Done a complete reinstall - Accounts still not visible.

Looking on a variety of forums, this appears to have been happening to XP and Vista prior to Windows 7.

However none of the fixes for XP or Vista work (Some don't even apply).

Does anyone have a solution for this bug?

Thanks

Hi all,

Hoping someone might be able to help. Recently, a few strange things have happened with the PC, which first started when I found I couldn't use the Backup & Recovery software in Windows 7. Whenever I clicked on one of the buttons with a shield, nothing would happen at all. I've looked around and just can't find the solution to this. However, today when trying to fix this, I've come across a new user account in the permissions section. The name is jvactaett - I certainly haven't made this! Does anyone have any ideas how this account has got there, and how I can remove it? It doesn't show in user accounts through Control Panel.

I've put a screenshot as well. To get there, I right clicked a hard drive and went to properties, Security, Add, advanced and then clicked Find Now.

I don't know if the two things above are linked or not...
Thanks!

I have a desktop PC with a 1000 GB hard drive. The OS is Windows 10 Anniversary Update. I have the OS and programs/apps on C: partition of 150 GB and user data on D: partition of 781 GB. I have a system image backup, taken recently when the PC was functioning OK. I backup the user data daily, using File History. If I have a major problem that requires re-installing W10 I can do that with the image backup.
My question is, do I really need to maintain a two partition strategy or have the backup tools of imaging and File History made this redundant?

A:Is it advisable to put user data on a separate Windows 10 partition

Hi and welcome.

There's not really much point in having the backups on the same drive as the drive itself could become faulty.

I put my user folders on a second drive and change the save locations in the settings app. This way if the OS screwed up drive c: you can simply format and reinstall Windows without loosing your personal files.

I've gone through hell the last 2 weeks , unlike with the last iterations of windose I could grab all the folders in a profile and drag and drop it into the profile to be updated with the old information, ect.

If I am understanding the info I have read win10 uses a live type of startmenu/edge browser which means if the runtime broker or cache stuff is out of whack it won't work no matter what.

Yes I have tried

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register ?$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml?}

Restarting and repairing widnows files and other things, none works.

My question is where are the files that cause all these nightmares from happening and why are they not protected system files like other things are?

Hello Dusty,

While logged in to your admin account, you might see if the method in the tutorial below may be able to help fix this for you.

Trying to navigate through the unfamiliar UI has been quite challenging although I like the new look I had win x and upgraded to Not too difficult at all It was such a good experience that I decided to keep win and commit to a fresh install Almost all of my programs are compatible so why not Made the boot drive from a USB accounts User formatted my hard drive and went for it Here's the problem Now all my settings must be adjusted to my liking one of which is the password login feature which should be a request User accounts to User accounts implement not automatically assumed that you need it and will have to undo it later There isn't a clear way to navigate to this setting and I had to use the cheat quot netplwiz quot in the box Then I uncheck the box requiring a password to login and restart to verify Once restarted windows automatically created another profile with my actual name and I must pick one of two one having my profile picture and info and the other having a generic avatar Even after choosing the correct one I still must use my password to login I can only assume that this is because there are two profiles or quot users quot now and one is incomplete There isn't a clear way for me to delete this incomplete other profile and no ideas for even why windows created it in the first place I know it's something I changed or otherwise DID but I need to undo it somehow Is this clear Confused Me too Thanks in advance

A:User accounts

Ok, so I wish I could tell you how I did this, but it's so unfamiliar, I don't know what setting I changed, but all is fine now. Just for future development purposes, all profile settings ought to be much easier and intuitive to access. This was unnecessarily difficult, and I can't even answer this post with a solution.

I did an upgrade from Vista to w7 ultimate and everything went great so i set up user accounts that werent there before. I wanted to set up as administrator the upgrade version, and 2 standard accounts. Now what happened is the admin account is new and the upgrade account is set as a regular account. I tried everything to change it but it will not let me. It told me to make one of the other accounts as admin before i can change the admin account but it will not let me. I hope i am not to hard to understand. What can i do to fix it?

A:User accounts

Did you do an upgrade or clean install? If your programs have to be reinstalled it was a clean install?

If it was an upgrade, do it over. Do a clean install. You will solve this problem and all that will come in the future.

Hi, I have three user accounts on our computer.
1 administrator (password protected)
2 kids (limited)
3 parents(limited)(password protected from kids)
I am coming to the conclusion that my various virus, malware and computer performance cleaning programs have to be run in each user account. Is this true?
I thought if I ran these programs in the administrator account they would be applied to all user accounts. I've noticed that when adaware is ran in one account it cleans up what it finds but then when I ran adaware in another account it still found items. This has me confused on the whole scope of maintenance programs running on a computer with multiple accounts.
Do these programs run only in one user account at a time?
Can I configure program to check all user accounts at once??
Thanks.

I have set up new standard user accounts for my kids but when trying to log on to any one of them, I get a totally blank desktop. I also tried setting the accounts up in safe mode with the same result. What is the problem?

A:new user accounts

It sounds like the Accounts are corrupted or the processes involved in logon are not doing their job.

Attempt to logon as one of the standard accounts and once the desktop is there, Ctrl + Alt + Del

click task manager, end explorer.exe if it's running and then go File>New Task and type explorer.exe and click ok, let us know if that works.

Thanks

Is there a way to block all non-administrator accounts from downloading programs????

A:User Accounts

I don't believe you can actually stop them from downloading programs, but I am pretty sure they will need admin privileges to install programs.

Although, I am sure there is some sort of third-party program to allow you to do that.

Hi everyone new here Just moving from XP to Windows and would appreciate the collective wisdom here My girlfriend and I previously shared an XP machine with just a single account This has user 1 or more accounts? worked great password location for files backup cloud mailbox of everything We don't care about having individual wallpapers or individual settings We are very happy just 'sharing' the PC When I consider accounts I see all sorts of problems arising Do we have to have individual Microsoft Accounts Do I have to spend hours trying to get each others calendars email visible to each other without switching User We will both have individual TB of cloud storage How do we keep our joint files photos music etc in 1 or more user accounts? sync I've read on the net 1 or more user accounts? that it's recommended we should have individual User accounts Can anybody give me some good reasons to change and have accounts when we really don' t care about individuality Many thanks for your replies Staffs Lebowski

A:1 or more user accounts?

All of our machines are networked and have only 1 user account. The single user is "transparent" and has no bad side effects. (Unless you really need it, some do, the use of a password may be unnecessary and will allow easy start up.) I do not use HomeGroups and other add-ons in Windows 7. All data on all machines is easily viewed because of the Sharing that is available.
In your case just go ahead and set up a single account as you did in XP.

My computer recently bluescreened (error 0x0000007f (0x00000008, some more numbers and commas) and on restart only one of the four user accounts remained. The files under their documents and settings folder are still there, but the accounts themselves are gone from welcome screen and the control panel user accounts utility. Furthermore I cannot create new users with their names even if I change their direcotry's name (i.e john smith to john smith2), it says "Account/User Name Already exists". I know how to create new accounts and give them control of the users files, but I would prefer to restore the old ones. Any ideas?

A:user accounts

.

The correct way to enable the hidden Adminsitrator is to open an elevated Command Prompt to run net user administrator /active:yes or :no to disable it. I do not suggest you run under hidden Administrator.

You can make changes to the picture or password in your current User account in the Control Panel>User Accounts.

Let us know if there are any other issues, and never edit your Registry without first setting a Restore point as this is otherwise a Windows 7 suicide attempt.

I've also posted in the MS Office forum since I'm not certain where this belongs.

Essentially, I previously had one user account entitled "Administrator". Yesterday I created a new user account with administrator privileges. The result is the old user account "Administrator" disappeared from the welcome screen and the user account set up screen in control panel. Now I can't access my emails in the Administrator account. I need a way to get to that account or a way to import the emails from the Administrator OE account into the new user account in either OE or Outlook.

The emails are still there, by the way. I can find the OE folders on the hard drive.

I've tried system restore and it won't work for any point in the past (never has worked).

Any suggestions?

Hello bl6377,

Could perhaps describe exactly what the problem is with the Guest account?

Guest Accounts cannot be setup as adminstrators, by default they are limited accounts. When Managing a Guest Account, you are only able to change its default picture, or turn it off/on.

Will there be any administrative problems if i do this or will that aspect be eliminated and not prompt any administrative needs?

Hi, don't deleate the account but you will have to remove the password. Go to user accounts in control panel and do it from there.

I had two user accounts on the start up screen and could log in perfectly till yesterday, however due to low battery windows shutdown abnormally and since then I am not able to log into my user accounts or administrator account, and also see a new Guest account which was not there before as I had disabled that earlier, keep getting the following message -

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The specified domain either does not exist or could not be found.

Please try again or consult your system administrator.

I am not a member of any domain and no domains are set up.
Appreciate any help in this regards, also if I have to reinstall windows from scratch is there a way to recover my data before doing a fresh install.

A:User Accounts Help

Why isn't all of the programs in the start>programs menu listed in the original account in the new account?
Simply because when you have downloaded or installed programs on your original account you installed it under your name not 'All users'. Just copy across the programs under C\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Start Menu\Programs into C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs.

Why isn't all of the shortcuts on my desktop in the original account the same as in the new account?
Again, simply because in your original account you made the shortcuts under your name not all users. To copy the shortcuts across go to C\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME\Desktop into C\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop.

How do i change my icon?
Go to start, control panel, user accounts, and then choose one Hope I have helped.

check to see if the permissions were somehow set to read only for the user network. you can check by right clicking the directory and selecting properties. the check the sharing and or security tab and make sure you did not restrict this user.

Also from control panel when I click User Accounts it goes to "control userpasswords2" window, not to the XP styled User Accounts window, where I can add pictures etc.

Is it possible to change this. I checked my local and group policies but couldn't find anything there?.

Hi, wyowheels

[tsg=welcome][/tsg]

I'm not exactly sure what you are asking. Files are files - they are not "in" a user account. Open Explorer and look under the "Documents and settings" folder for a sub-folder with the old user name. If it's there you should have access to it (and all its sub-folders and files) now.

I had to do a reinstall of Win7-64 OS and think I set up User Accounts incorrectly. In my previous install I had "USER" as well as "Users". USER didn't contain too much, and my name, plus that of my wife were in Users. That's where our individual files stayed. In my reinstall I only have Users, and the only entry there is USER and within that lies my data. My user name shows on a payne, but it doesn't contain anything unique. I'm not sure this makes any sense, but my question is whether I have to start over to get a directory like I had. I'm not sure what I have is correct????

A:User Accounts?

During install it will ask you for your Account name, which will be a quasi-Administrator account since it's assumed this is the owner.

Add additional User Accounts in Control Panel>User Accounts.

You can also change any User account name there.

You need to delete them from the Administrator's account. For now disable the accounts from the dministrator 's account. If you have a malious program controlling them blocking them may work bette than deleting hem for now. Also set thier accounts type to limited, and restrict them.
Have you run antivirus and antispyware? Do you have a firewall installed.

Hi all,

I've been using an administrator account for all my daily computing needs. I understand that this is a bad idea so I created another account, standard account, to use. Is there a way to transfer all my settings and program shortcuts etc to this new account or does everything have to be done individually. If this is the case then it's way too much fooling around for my liking and I'll stick with the administrator account.

Using Vista Home Premium 64 bit.

Thanks for any help.

A:Help with User Accounts

Hello CRPishere, and welcome to Vista Forums.

From within your administrator account, you can copy the contents in the administrator's C:\Users\(user name) folder into the corresponding standard account's C:\Users\(user name) folder to copy them there.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have bought a new HP computer with Windows Vista with my brother. However, we would like to use seperate user accounts that don't affect the other person's account.

For example, installing software on one account will not install it on the other one. I read somewhere that if you are not an administrator, it only installs on your account but that did not work, i created an extra admin account and made us two standard users but it still doesn't work how we would like it.

Any ideas?

A:User Accounts

A user account is a collection of information that tells Windows what files and folders you can access, what changes you can make to the computer, and your personal preferences, such as your desktop background or color theme. User accounts make it so that you can share a computer with several people, but still have your own files and settings. Each person accesses their user account with a user name and password.

Open up Control panel and if in Classic mode, click on "User Accounts" and follow the instructions that you can get by searching for user accounts in the Help area

First, I apologize if this is the wrong area for this thread. Second, I'm typing this on my DS, so sorry for the brievity and any errors.

A while ago I started having problems with viruses. Last night I ran AVG scan in safe mode on the advice of a friend. This morning I restarted, and have a terrible problem.

My log in screen has no user accounts. Normally it has me and a guest. Instead, it says "other user." If I click on that I get a name/password prompt. No matter what I enter, it says "the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." It's also stuck in 800x600 resolution.

Thanks for any help.

A:User accounts gone!

You can fix that with system restore. Go back 3 days before the problem.
Try to access it in safe mode. If normal boot is not available.

for Vista, too.

I use windows xp and my user accounts are all set as administrators. however only one user seems to have control. others can not open help and support and system restore opens up in a blank window. It seems that any thing regarding Help will not open for these other users.

Thanks

I am using XP Home Edition.
I created a new user account and named in "Me". After I chose all the setting ,etc, that I wanted, I renamed the user "Bruno".
The question is this: If I go to C/Documents and Settings, there is a folder called "Me" and no folder called "Bruno". I want the "Me" folder to be named "Bruno" since the user name is no longer "Me" but "Bruno". I right click the folder and select rename and it tells me that "Me" is a windows system folder and can not be renamed. Is there a way to safely rename the folder since I already changed the user name or am I stuck with the "Me" folder in C/Documents and Settings? I hope I was clear with my question.

I am trying to delete a user account in XP. Everytime I click "Delete user account" windows hangs and becomes "not responding". This happen several times when I tried to do this. Any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

A:User Accounts

My 1300 page reference book says: "User Accounts won't let you delete the last local account on the computer, even if you're logged on as Administrator. This limitation helps to enforce the sound practice of using an account other than Administrator for everyday computing."

Perhaps you have run into MS making decisions for us!! It's like their trying to force auto updates down our throat.

I have a Windows XP and I am (obviously) having trouble. Before, I had three accounts set up on the laptop, two days ago I checked and two were admin. and one was limited. However, since yesterday, it has been asking for a password to enter my main account. I thought nothing of it until I had to access one of the other accounts. I logged off and it wouldnt take me to the Welcome screen. When I checked under USER ACCOUNTS in the CONTROL PANEL it only showed that account and said it was limited, so pretty much I only have one account on my computer and cant add the other ones back on because this one somehow got set to limited. I don't know how any of this happened but how do I fix this so that I can add another account?

A:HELP! User accounts

Have you tried restarting into safe mode (tap F8 on bootup) and using the default Administrator account, which either shouldn't have a password or will have the one you set when installing?

I'd also take a look under Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management> Local Users and Groups>Users. see whats listed there.

Also check Control Panel>System>Advanced>User Profiles and C:\Documents and Settings

Anyway let us know how you get on.

A:What are these other User Accounts?

<<So, does Windows XP create these user folders by default?>>

Yes, see attachment.

That is just how Windows works. Your questiona about Control Panel/Users...relates to user profiles, persons authorized access/use of the system...the accounts are a subset created for each user, with the username (in my case, Louis) identifying each.
