Preferred Solution: Having a Explorer.exe fault and windows locking up

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I'm trying to save a document, save an attached file in a mail or if I try to access an MsAccess database where i have the tables on another server Windows Explorer always locks upp. The only way to lock it up is to kill the explorer process and try again, sometimes it works but mostly not.

I have som network drives connected, it possible it might be those who locks it up, but why?? I can access the network drives if I only use Win Explorer it seems like it is when I have the Save As dialog things go wrong or in MsAccess when I try to connect to tables on one of the connected netword drives.

A:Windows Explorer locking up

To start with make sure you have all the windows updates, have a virus scanner with up to date definitions and run a scan for adware/spyware/malware with a tool like AdAware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

If after that you are still having trouble goto Start > Run > type sfc /scannow > Ok and have your windows cd handy. This will check the versions of system critical files and replace them if it finds a problem.

Hope that helps,

Can anyone offer any help? It seems to just be getting worse. Programs and windows are constantly getting "not responding". Even windows that are open take really long to switch between. I am running Win Enterprise recently repair refreshed When I am cleaning up my desktop and internal files I frequently of the time cannot move a file or folder from one directory to another without getting Stop from Files to How Explorer locking Windows and error message saying that it cannot be moved because it is open in another program Of that of the time is because Windows Explorer is using it Seems like of course it is being accessed by Windows explorer since I am using that utility of Windows to move the file Duh But this happens even with files folders that have not been accessed for months It is so frequent that I just go ahead and check and unblock every file folder I want to move with a program called 'Lock Hunter' before I try to move the file s This is the same for renaming files folders and any directory type action This seems crazy I would think Win Explorer is there to help us move things around instead of preventing it all the time I don't recall Win ever doing this It all seems to have started with Windows Does anyone have any idea how to stop Windows from doing this Thanks in advance RD How to Stop Windows Explorer from locking Files Wirr

A:How to Stop Windows Explorer from locking Files

Your problem might come from Explorer building thumbnails. This process can be rather slow, depending on the file type. When moving folders, explorer will also try to access the thumbnails cache of this folder, so you might be better off clearing it (or manually deleting the hidden Thumbs.db beforehand).
Check this and see if it solves your problem :

Boot from your Windows installation disk and select 'Repair your computer' or you could do an 'upgrade re-install repair'.

A:Windows Explorer constantly crashing (with OggSplitter.ax at fault?)

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

Hello and welcome to Sevenforums.
Having crashes upon the .explorer usually reveals problems in the Windows Context Menu. I'd suggest you to download a software called ShellExView. The idea of ShellExView is to figure out, what shell extension is causing your explorer to crash.Use the software with this procedure- Disable one extension that doesn't belong to Microsoft. In many cases there are running 3rd party shell extension along Windows, and may cause the crash. If the crash persist, undo the selection, and proceed to the next non-Microsoft extension. Keep doing so, until you've found the culprit.

Download Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes will investigate malware and worm targets, and try to remove them. It's very handy in that manner.Run a full scan of it twice or more. In many cases it won't detect malware in the first shot.

To ensure Windows isn't broken, we'll recommend the sfc /scannow command. Here's how- Press Start | search 'cmd' | Right-click it
| open as Admin | type SFC /SCANNOW

SFC /scannow

If the steps didn't work, Create a new User Account on your system. The current user account you're using, may be broken and corrupted.

Best Regards,
Frederik.

Can Explorer in Vista be configured so that your selected menu preferences remain fixed?

In the right pane, I set 'Name', 'Size', 'Folder Path', 'Type', and 'Date Modified', using the 'Details' vew. I then clicked Tools -> Folder Options -> View -> selected my preferences (e.g., Show hidden files..., etc.) -> Apply to Folders -> Yes -> OK.

Despite these steps, after my system is awakened from sleep or rebooted, I get the default 'Artist', 'Genre', 'Rating', etc. in the right pane menu, even after searching for a non-media file, like a Word document. Microsoft seems bent on displaying multimedia file info. Surely there is some way to manage your preferences in Explorer. Has anybody been able to outwit Microsoft in this matter?

A:Selected menu items in Explorer won't stay + Explorer locking video files

Is there a way to stop Vista, especially Win Explorer, from locking video files. What a nuisance!

If I play a video file then decide to rename or delete it--even after exiting the software used to play the video--I often get the message that the file is still in use. Rubbish! The app is not in use as evidenced in Task Manager. Freeware Lock Hunter works most of the time in such instances, but I'm wondering if there is some registry key that could be changed to let me use my PC without having to contend with this kind of witless engineering.

Ok- here's the problem if I can explain it. For the past 3 days or so, my IE and other programs will completely lock up. I noticed this occurs often when I attempt to click on a link either in Outlook or IE. Not sure what info might be helpful here. I use Ad-Aware, Avast, Sygate mainly. Occasionally SpyBot. Running XP. If anyone believes it would be helpful I can run Hijack on the system. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

I have a notebook computer with Windows XP home edition updated to SP1. On a number of occasions Explorer has become corrupted. When I open Explorer I am able to browse through all my files and folders, run executable files and open other files by double clicking on them. I can also use all of the menu items except "File". If I try to access the "File" menu item or right-click on a file Explorer locks up. I can then only close it by using ctrl, alt & del. When this has happened on other occasions I have used System Restore which has fixed the problem. Now, however, System Restore is not working despite going back to a point where I know Explorer was working. Any ideas on what could be causing this and how to fix it would be appreciated.

Neil

A:Explorer locking up

Welcome to the forum!

The easiest solution to this is to go to the MS site and download the latest Explorer version right over the top of your current one.

However, being the suspicious sort (not really:tongue2: ), I do wonder why this might have happened in the first place.

Do you remember installing or unintalling any programs, downloading stuff...any thing that would correlate with this problem?

Let's talk about this more, and get some more input from the other folks, before we talk about an IE reinstall.

Something is causing my computer to freeze all the time, im getting alot of web pages and programs with the "not responding" message and i have to close them using task manager. Please note this isnt happening all the time, just every now and then.

Hi TSF,

I'm new here, well met. I've got one that I can't seem to figure out. Is it me or my machine.

I've got an older ITE drive that I would like to get the information off of, I was almost positive that the drive was in working order when I stored it away. Now when I put it in a external drive case and plug in my USB cable. Explorer locks up and will not stop until USB cable is disconnected. I've also seen this on a SATA drive enclosure so I'm thinking it's a problem with my OS or I'm just unlucky and every drive I'm touching is toast.

thanks in advance,

Hello antman84.It has been 2 weeks since your last post here. Have you resolved your issues? if so, please let us know.Has this system always had an active antivirus program? Was there ever a time when it was without an antivirus? Is the HD back into the original pc?If you still have issues with malware, do the followingDownload DDS and save it to your desktop from http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds here or http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr or http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ddsDisable any script blocker if your antivirus/antimalware has it.Then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS.txt will open. Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt Attach.txtSave both reports to your desktop. Please include the following logs in your next reply:DDS.txtAttach.txtDo not use the attachment feature to post any logs. Hello and Welcome to TSF

What O.S is on the computer.

You can try and run the Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow (for xp)
sfc (for 98)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

I've been having internet explorer lock up a lot today.... It happened when I went to Gamefaqs.com, Slashdot and Homelan (and possibly some other sites) I'll be running Spybot soon to check there. I started playing Starsiege: Tribes over gamespy yesterday, could it be related? This is what was in the error report (I'm on winXP by the way): szAppName : iexplore.exe szAppVer : 6.0.2800.1106 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

Thanks

Constant problem when I open a file/folder - document Word or PDF etc.

Close the file, and then try to delete it, error message
"Folder In Use The action can't be completed because the folder is open in another program"

Any ideas as to what may be causing it?

Using Windows 7 64bit, however this occurs on my other Windows 32bit PC, which are in a Homegroup.

Thanks in advance.

A:Explorer.exe - Locking Files

When copying an .EXE file or a folder containing .EXE files, you may periodically experience the following sharing violation error:

Folder In Use
The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program

After waiting approximately two minutes without retrying, you can click the Try Again button and it will copy successfully. This issue can occur if the Application Experience (AeLookupSvc) service is set to Disabled.

A resolution is to set the Application Experience (AeLookupSvc) service back to the Manual startup type. This allows the OS to dynamically start the service when needed.

Application Compatibility attempts to check if the .EXE file requires any application compatibility shims when it is accessed. This causes the system to obtain a handle to the file. The system queues a lookup request to the Application Experience (AeLookupSvc) service, but since the service is disabled, the request is not serviced in time and Explorer cannot copy the file because it is in use. After two minutes, the queued request to the Application Experience service times out and is dropped, releasing the handle and allowing the copy to proceed.

This issue only occurs when copying with Explorer. Good luck! Hope this helps.

I cannot boot Win98 on my computer because I get a Explorer.exe page fault and the boot shuts down.

I recall that there is a DOS command, something like "RESTORE" which brings up the last 5 successful boots but I cannot remember it exactly and can't find it documented.

Any help appreciated.

Hiya

When you get to DOS, at the prompt type the following:

scanreg/restore

and pick one that is from before the problem. Don't pick the oldest one.

Yesterday I ran a critical update from microsoft site for interent explorer 6.0 service pack 1 I believe was the name on a NT 4.0 system with service pack 6. After I did this when I open internet explorer now it just hangs there, and since this machine is on a network I know its the machine because everyone else can still get online. When I go to click on connections tab under tools, internet options I get a fault in inetcpl.cpl and I get immedialtely that the program is not resppnding under task manager, then closes me out. When I go to my mail I also get DR. Watson and the inetcpl.cpl fault. Any ideas what happended and do I need to re-install internet explorer to correct this.

A:Internet Explorer fault

inetcpl.cpl is the control panel applet that is labeled "internet options"

You have to repair internet explorer.

Go to start -> run and type this command

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

select repair

This is a weird and annoying one. XP Pro (SP2) won't let me delete any EXE files from my Desktop. At least it appears to be restricted to just the desktop.

A restart doesn't help, and after using Unlocker to view the locking application, it shows that explorer.exe is the culprit. Strangely, every time I try to delete the file, Explorer decides to add another lock to the file. I.e. four delete attempts lands me with four locks from Explorer.

An HJT run showed nothing was going on that I didn't know about, so I'm kinda stuck. Unlocker will delete the files if I ask it to, but it's annoying that it's happening in the first place.

Any ideas folks?

I've seen lots of page fault posts on lots of forums, but I've done a search for this routine (WDMJHKI.DLL) and it is not to be found anywhere on the net.

Anyone know what it is?

Unfortunately this is is a page fault error that appears as soon as the Windows desktop appears, and closing it refreshes the desktop., and then the same error appears. So I am stuck in the boat of not being able to download any helpful "DLL fix" software or being able to run Spybot, etc.

Any ideas?

I can only think to do a full reinstall of Windows, but since I don't have access to the disks, I'd have to buy new ones. Before I do that, I'd like some indication that it will do any good.

Thanks,

atypical

I have used tabbed browsing for a long time without any issues but since I changed my ISP to British Telecom Wireles Hom Hub my Internet explorer seems to have an issue with Tabbed browsing. I can open up as many separate sessions of internet explorer but as soon as i atteempt to open another tab within one of the sessions it just freezes up completely. It also seems to have stopped allowing me to follow links to other pages/popups which means I cannot register my new BT Phone. BT say this is not to do with their software I installed but this seems like too much of a coincidence. Any Ideas??????????

A:Tabbed Browsing locking up internet explorer

I have had pretty much the same problem, regarding lock ups when I tried to open up a new tab.
I found this remedy in some other problem.
1-Go to TOOLs, Internet Options, Advanced tab, then go to Reset internet Explorer Settings. Be sure to read all that it deletes and disables, because you may then need to enable those items again.

2- In the tool bar to the right of your tabs is a ?tool? tab, click on it and go to ?manage add-ons? and reset the add-ons that you may want to be enabled. Just follow the instructions in that section.

3- If your new tabs are not going to the correct place when they open up. I want all my new tabs to open in my home page.
Go to tools, internet options, then the section below that says ?TABS?. And change the settings.
Hope this helps. It did for me.

A:APPCRASH: Explorer.exe Fault Module Name: OLEAUT32.dll

The oleaut32.dll Version = 6.1.7600.16567 is part of the Update KB982110. Use expand [1] to extract the MSU and the DLL from the CAB file.
Get the SrpUxSnapIn.dll from your Windows DVD [2]. Now replace the damaged files with the clean files.

Hello folks My Internet Explorer takes a tremendously LONG time to open up a new window Once open it runs smoothly and fast Also My Computer windows open slowly I have isolated what I believe is PART of the problem - ccApp exe is running on my system ccApp as many of you know I m sure is a part of NAV that runs think Internet NAV at slow, Explorer VERY starts is fault... I on startup to make sure that all the installed NAV pieces Internet Explorer starts VERY slow, I think NAV is at fault... load correctly or at least that s what I understand from Symantec s web site This includes AutoProtect Norton Anti-spams pop-up blocking etc When I disable ccApp IE runs like a champ - fast quick zippy etc Very nice Internet Explorer starts VERY slow, I think NAV is at fault... When I reenable ccApp things bog down again Now I m thinking that it really isn t ccApp s problem as I know other people with it running on their machine but rather that it is something that ccApp is starting that is the culprit I don t really want to disable ccApp because when I do my Norton Anti-Spam s pop-up blocking no longer works Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks Ryan P S I ve attached a HJT log in case anyone wants to look at it ----------- Logfile of HijackThis v Scan saved at AM on Platform Windows XP SP WinNT MSIE Internet Explorer v SP Running processes C WINNT System smss exe C WINNT system winlogon exe C WINNT system services exe C WINNT system lsass exe C WINNT system svchost exe C WINNT System svchost exe C Program Files Common Files Symantec Shared ccSetMgr exe C Program Files Common Files Symantec Shared ccEvtMgr exe C WINNT system spoolsv exe C Program Files Common Files Symantec Shared ccProxy exe C WINNT system cisvc exe C Program Files Norton AntiVirus AdvTools NPROTECT EXE C WINNT System nvsvc exe C Program Files Norton AntiVirus SAVScan exe C WINNT System tcpsvcs exe C WINNT System svchost exe C Program Files Common Files Symantec Shared CCPD-LC symlcsvc exe C WINNT System MsPMSPSv exe C WINNT Explorer EXE C WINNT System CTHELPER EXE C Program Files Microsoft Hardware Keyboard type exe C WINNT PCHealth HelpCtr Binaries MSConfig exe C Program Files Common Files Symantec Shared ccApp exe C program files steam steam exe C Program Files Skype Phone Skype exe C Program Files Yahoo Messenger ypager exe C Program Files Palm HOTSYNC EXE C Program Files Windows Media Player wmplayer exe C Program Files Norton AntiVirus navapsvc exe C WINNT system cidaemon exe C PROGRA COMMON SONYSH AVLib Sptisrv exe C Program Files Internet Explorer iexplore exe C HijackThis HijackThis exe R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Start Page http www yahoo com R - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Start Page http www yahoo com R - HKLM Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Search CustomizeSearch R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Main Start Page bak http www yahoo com R - HKCU Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Toolbar LinksFolderName R - Default URLSearchHook is missing O - BHO AcroIEHlprObj Class - E F-C D - D -B D- B D BE B - C Program Files Adobe Acrobat Reader ActiveX AcroIEHelper dll O - BHO SideStep Browser Helper - - - BD- A -D FF C CE - C WINNT Downloaded Program Files SbCIe dll O - BHO NAV Helper - BDF E -B - AD-A -FADC B - C Program Files Norton AntiVirus NavShExt dll O - BHO WebHighlighter utility - EBDCEF - - E -BBE - CC CE - C Program Files PC Magazine Utilities Web Highlighter WebH dll O - BHO no name - FDD B - D - ffb- - B AD ACC - C Program Files Microsoft Money System mnyviewer dll O - Toolbar amp Radio - E - F- D - E- A C - C WINNT System msdxm ocx O - Toolbar Norton AntiVirus - CDD BF- FFB- - AD - DF B D - C Program Files Norton AntiVirus NavShExt dll O - HKLM Run WINDVDPatch CTHELPER EXE O - HKLM Run UpdReg C WINNT UpdReg EXE O - HKLM Run NvCplDaemon RUNDLL EXE C WINNT System NvCpl dll NvStartup O - HKLM Run Keyboard Preload Check C OEMDRVRS KEYB Preload exe DEVID CLASS Keyboard RunValue quot Keyboard Pr... Welcome to TSG

WINDEC32.DLL is malware related.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Greetings and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. ===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Please run this program for me.===================================================Run Combofix in Vista/7--------------------Combofix is a very powerful tool and special attention must be taken to allow it to work properly. Please pay careful attention to the following instructions.sUBs, the author of Combofix, recommends you to uninstall AVG or CA Internet Security before running the program. A:Solved: ME locking up, ad-aware locking up, slow computer

Hi, Did you disable System Restore? Your scans may be detecting files in the RESTOR_ area...which they cannot fix. Turning off System Restore is neccessary so that you can remove all the infected files, malware etc from your Restore Points...disabling System Restore directions/info here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001012513122239?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

After things are cleaned up, you can create a new Restore Point. If you did do this already looks like I will not be able to help you....the log is fine.

I have tried the following searches, and they all return incorrect results:

the issue started after it went to sleep mode and then i shut it off, i removed all my graphics card drivers and programs i added and i still get the same problem, even when i get to the recory system when it says "please wait while windows is recovering/restoring" not sure what it says exactly it will lock up and i have to restart it.

My desktop is locking up periodically with different programs open, i.e. I can't pinpoint any program that's causing this. Sometimes it'll go a few days between freezing up other times it will lock up right after I restart it. When the computer freezes up the only thing I can do is do a hard restart using the power button on the computer case. Any other effort like Ctrl+Al+Del

The only 2 things I can think of that could be causing this are listed below. However I'm no expert and it could be somehting totally different:
- Harddrive crashing / going bad
- Result of trying to make Windows faster by following tips in this article... http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1768298,00.asp. I had done some 'tweaking' per the article roughly around the time the freezing up problem started.

I have a fresh, clean install of win2k pro. Last night, I installed the software to support Logitechs MX2700 keyboard, then the problems started. My computer started locking up for no reason. (In game, and at the desktop) So, naturally, I figured the software I just installed was the problem, and I uninstalled it. However, it is STILL locking up. Any ideas as to why it is doing so?

suggest go to Device Manager and remove keyboard.
if you have another keyboard, try hook it up and if works ok, the problem is with Logitech.. sorry it's the best I can come up with.

I want to start a thread about locking down Windows I ve been frequenting this security forum for several years and I notice people mostly just come asking for which security programs to install forgetting about securing Windows before connecting to the internet Whenever I re-install Windows it takes me - hours just installing locking down and setting up Windows without talking about installing applications What do you do to secure Windows not talking about antivirus and other security applications I believe all code can have security flaws Locking down Windows and is potentially expolitable This is particularly for network facing code but also others too for example services running on the Local System account if exploited may be used to gain system wide privileges by hackers and automatically by malware So everything that is not necessary not used not hardware supported should be turned off The first thing I do - setup the network on my Vista some same settings are present in XP Control Panel Network and Sharing Center Local Area Connection Properties UNCHECK these - Client for MS Networks - File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks - Internet protocol version - Link Layer Topology Discovery Mapper IO Driver - Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder Select Internet Protocol version TCP IPv click Properties click Advanced click DNS tab UNCHECK register this connections address in DNS click WINS tab SELECT Disable NETBIOS over TCP IP The Topology Discovery protocols are useless except in large networks and there is only one router in my network like most home users So there is no need to have discovery protocols and programs to display a fancy diagram to me to explain the layout of the network It is also a new protocol which means new network facing code Hackable I don t know but I am not taking chances File sharing I don t use and I don t connect to other machine s file shares either so Client for MS Networks and File and Printer Sharing are turned off Most home Locking down Windows routers don t support IPv today like mine and the firewalls built into those routers don t know anything about IPv So having IPv tunneling is like having a backdoor into the network bypassing the perimeter firewall Vista s firewall is IPv aware but malware can disable it and then I won t have the router firewall to fall back on So I disable IPv related teredor network device driver Defence in depth have two firewalls one router based and one host based each with different rules The DNS server doesn t need to know my ip address and I don t have any local DNS servers in my network so uncheck register this connection address NETBIOS is an old protocol and I don t have old versions of Windows running in my network Please help build this thread by providing some of your OS lockdown settings I will add to this thread in the comming days nbsp

Upon starting my computer Windows XP sometimes locks up before completing the booting process. What might be causing this

A:Windows XP locking up

I have two suggestions. If XP worked initially without this problem and just recently started manifesting this behavior try System Restore. Perhaps you recently added some software and the problem started after the install. You can take system restore back to a time before the install.

If that is not the case, then I'd Go to Startup and disable one program at a time. You can do this in XP (I have HE) by:

Start>Help and Support>Pick a Task>Use Tools>System Configuartion Utility. Select Startup Tab.

You can temporarily disable one program at a time, and resart the computer until you don't have the problem anymore. This will pinpoint the program that is causing the problem if it is in Startup. You disable the program by removing the check mark by left clicking on it. This is time consuming, but won't hurt anything, and you can re-enable the program by placing the checkmark in front of it again. You shouldn't need to disable Systray.

I am using windows xp on my computer works fine for about a few hours and then locks up. I need to reboot and then it is ok for a while and does the same thing again. I have repaired my windows from the windows disk but this did not help. Any ideas?

A:windows locking up

Yes, I have ideas.
Is this a desktop or laptop?

1. Could be a heat issue.
Problems that occur after hours of operation are often heat related.
How comfortable are you opening up your computer, if it is a desktop?

2. Could be bad ram.
Run MemTest86 for 8+ hrs.
Go to http://www.memtest86.com/
Click on the "free download" on the left.

3. Could be electricity.
I had the same problem. I replaced the power supply, connected an uninterrupted power supply. "Solved" the problem for months.

4. Could be the motherboard.
The problem returned. I tested the ram. It failed the diagnostics. I put in new ram. Problem persisted. I put in a new motherboard.

The problem has not returned.

Have you checked the HP site to see you have the newest version of drives for audio, nic card, and video card as one of these is usually the issue with PM.
The other thing I have seen is the well known poor psu these guys use simply degrading in time which causing this. You could not help but improve your system by installing a decent Psu to replace their "Bestec" or "Hipro" junk they use.

Any help on this?

A:Windows 7 keeps locking up

Restored my PC to yesterday after starting up in safe mode and it appears to have fixed it. The updates i installed yesterday must of caused it. Edit: Just ran a malware/spyware scan to be sure and they picked up a few things, dont know if that was the cause of it though. One thing in particular was "Relevant Knowledge" what monitors your web usage.

Hi,

Recently my copy of XP has started freezing as soon as it has finished loading up. The mouse still moves round, but I can't click on anything, and get the sand timer when i move the mouse over the taskbar.

There is nothing wrong with the PC itself, since I have another version of windows on another drive, which works fine (am using at the moment), also it boots to safe mode ok.

Would anyone have any ideas how i can pinpoint what is causing the problem?Although i have memory dumps etc turned on, this type of crash doesn't seem to be creating anything.

Thanks a lot

Paul

A:Windows XP locking up after 1 min

Hi Paul,

It sounds like you may need to enter safe mode and do a System Restore to an earlier time of a known working condition. Something has changed to permit this is happen. If that does nothing for you, then a repair install may be in order.

I'd start by opening Event Viewer and looking at the error log. I frequently see issues with Asus FastBoot and FancyBoot, so I would uninstall them.

A:[SOLVED] Windows 7 is locking up on me

Hi -

What audio card do you have? DirextX Kernel report shows default Microsoft drivers installed for audio and no 3rd party name, e.g., Realtek, IDT, etc..

Both your network drivers need updates -

Code:
Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Rt64win7.sys 3/2/2009

802.11n Wireless PCI Express Card LAN Adapter
netr28x.sys 5/18/2009
Realtek driver downloads --> http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/...Level=3&Conn=2

netr28x.sys a component of the LinkSys RT2860 - also known as the RaLink RT2860 Series Wireless LAN Card. Try both Linksys & Ralink sites -

Linksys --> http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support

Ralink --> http://www.ralinktech.com/support.php

I also took note that you have the NVIDIA beta drivers installed as recommended by NVIDIA - timestamp = March 2010.

That's it from the DirectX Kernel Diagnostics report.

A:Windows XP Locking up while shutting down

You can check your Event Viewer to see what error, if any, is being flagged.

Sounds like some program won't close. Try to identify it.

A:Windows 7 Locking up. Unresponsize.

In your hardware setup you did not mention your HDD's? You mentioned you have an SSD with Mac OSX on it, then you mention Windows is on a partition of the HDD. Do you mean you have a partition on the SSD or do you have a mechanical HDD in addition to the SSD that is partitioned?
In Windows try doing a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time until you find the culprit program.

Can someone help me with an issue i have with windows 7 64 bit edition. Every now and again, my screen locks, well i thought it was my mouse freezing, but it turns out its not only that but everything, even my clock stops, so i loose time. If i press any key on the keyboard then the whole computer resumes as normal, its as if the computer is put into a paused state, i have disabled anything to do with power saving, and put in high performance mode for fault diagnosing purposes. This happens quite often, and i thought maybe it was something i had installed, but now i dont know, was previously running windows vista 64 bit without problems. can anyone help me identify the issue im having, its driving me mad.

I have several users all having the problem It only started for them recently When they go to shut down at the end of the day their machines seem to lock up They click Start then shutdown and that s where it stops The window where you select Shutdown Restart Log off etc doesn t come up Same thing happens when you shutdown. XP on locking Windows up hit Ctrl Alt Del then click shutdown The next window doesn t come up Mouse still moves but nothing else responds If you hold down the power button until it shuts off then power up and log on then try to shut down again it shuts down properly Windows XP locking up on shutdown. Problem Windows XP locking up on shutdown. only seems to happen after they ve had the machine on for a few hours It s not hardware related though To eliminate the hardware I swapped the HDD on one machine having the problem Windows XP locking up on shutdown. with an identical machine that was not The problem followed the hard drive I don t think it s a hardlock since the mouse still respondes and we could remote in We tried going in while it was locked through the network and shutting down services one by one but nothing seemed to affect it Also if you let it sit for - minutes the selection window sometimes finally shows up nbsp

My computer is frequently locking up - completely unresponsive, mouse doesn't move.
It seems to happen within a few minutes every time I run Windows 10, but only occasionally if I run my old Vista install.
It still happens on a clean installation of Windows 10 (with no internet, to make sure it doesn't install the Anniversary update). Sometimes it locks up during Windows installation.
Often after it crashes, I get a chkdisk auto-running during the start-up process and reporting hard-drive corruption.
I've had problems in the past with my processor overheating due to a badly fitted fan. That's not happening at the moment, but maybe something got damaged last time it happened?
I've tried switching hard-drives and graphics cards, and that doesn't help.
I'm guessing it's a hardware problem - processor, motherboard, RAM or power supply. Any way I can narrow this down?
My BIOS reports power values of:
CPU: 1.04V
3.3V: 3.392V
5V: 5V
12V: 12.192V
