Hard Drive light keeps blinking - slowing laptop

Q: Hard Drive light keeps blinking - slowing laptop

I recently upgraded my microsoft office from XP professional (2002) to home and student 2010. I had troubles installing the software and had microsoft tech help me by take over my computer and install the software. Since then the computer has become VERY unstable(freezes and locks up(required battery to be removed)). The Hard Drive light keeps running and has become very slow. I don't know what to do, or if I have a virus...please advise. I have defraged the hard drive and scanned the disk...need some help...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I bought a Dell 1535 laptop yesterday with 32bit home premium vista installed. The computer seems to run well and cpu usage % is low but the hard drive light is constantly blinking. Other people seem to have a similar situation due to Vista's indexing but I'd like to know if this stops at some point.

Thanks in advance.

This will stop the constant HDD activity:

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/...ws-vista-search-indexer-and-indexing-service/

I did this right after purchasing my new pc a few weeks ago and have not had any problem like it since and can still use the search feature in Exployer. I also use File Seeker if I think the search isn't yielding what I want.

Hi,

I am new to this site, but I really need help. I have an external hard drive with tons and tons of important things on it. It was running fine and I went to plug it in last night and there is a blinking red light. It is a 3.5'' HDD enclosure. Can someone please tell me what has happened and also how I can fix it or retrieve the data. BTW... there is a green light on as well, but it doesn't blink, I am assuming that light just means it is on

Thanks

Have you checked in Task Manager under processes to see what might be running that may be causing this?

I have an Acer Aspire 5745 that is about 2 or 3 years old. I have been noticing that the hard drive light is either always blinking or always on, also the fan has been running constantly. Because the light is always on, the computer is running extremely slow. Simple and easy tasks such as opening a browser or even turning the volume up or down takes several seconds to 5 minutes.
I have tried uninstalling the antivirus AVG 2013 but it keeps coming up with a java error.
Please help!!
I'm not sure what other information to give. Please let me know what more information you need to help me.
Thanks!

My C540 All in One Touch constantly makes noise and the hard drive light flickers.  This didn't use to happen.  My guess is it started when I upgraded to Windows 10.  I have tried a couple of suggestions that I found searching and neither worked.  I made sure that how updates are delivered was off and I turned off file indexing.  Still the constant noise when the computer is in use along with the flickering hard drive light.  It is not a dying hard drive clicking noise.  It just sounds like the computer is constantly working.  Kind of a whiring noise.  It's driving me crazy!  Please help.

A:Hard drive randomly stopping (HD light goes out - laptop crash)

What brand/model is your laptop?

It's interesting you were able to run a defrag, a HDD-intensive task.

Do you have a way to back up your system?
There is a thread on this forum under the General Discussion topic where you may be able to request a link to a genuine copy of Vista, which you could use to reinstall the system. This could tell you broadly whether you have a hardware or software problem.
(The size of that thread tells you how many people just don't seem to have recovery discs, or never created discs, can't find them, etc.)

My USB flash drives always blink in one way or another... my Cruzer slowly pulsates until I start accessing it, then it blinks more frequently.

So, you've tried plugging the flash drive into another USB port?

@sgupta1 Welcome to the HP Forums I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.I understand that the battery on your computer is failed and you wanted to know whether it is safe to use the computer. I am glad to help you in this regard. You can use the computer even if the battery is failed. If you want, you can also remove the battery from the laptop and use the computer only with the AC adapter. I am positive that there will be no issues using the computer with the failed battery. Please let me know if you have any other query.Take care. My charger for my HP Mini 110 looks normal, and when plugged into the wall the blue light on the power brick holds stable and seems fine. But when I plug the charger into my laptop the blue light begins flashing and wont charger my laptop. I have no clue what the problem could be, and I've tried to plug the charger into different outlets and that has done nothing. Please help!!

Hi, my laptop will charge ok when shut down but when running after a time, the battery light and the power light will start blinking orange and the battery wont charge and will run out with the adaptor connected. I have tried removing the battery and holding the power button then refitting. If the light is blinking, after the laptop shuts down/hibernates, I have to remove the power lead and then reconnect for it to charge correctly. Also when I run on ac power only with the battery removed, the laptop will after a while suddenly shut down. Any ideas how to correct these issues would be grately appreciated. Thanks in advance.Al

Hi, I had a friend bring me an HP laptop recently that was not turning on or responding at all. The only thing that happens when I plug the laptop in is that the light located right next to the power port (which has a plug icon next to it) blinks a light blue / whitish color. No other lights blink, not the lightning bolt charging light, nothing. I have tried it with the battery installed, and removed.  Same behavior.I have tried the power drain (hold the power button for a minute while the batter is removed). Same behavior.I have tried multiple power adapters. Same behavior. Does this likely mean something is wrong with the motherboard itself? I can't find much information on a blinking power port light, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Adam

I searched the manual but there is no mention of what this flashing light means. Could it be an exhaust or shorted out battery? I"ve had this unit torn down many times and have replaced the AC jack twice. Any help would be apreciated.

I checked the battery health meter and the battery is 100% charged and the meter indicates that it is functioning normally. The laptop is only a few months old.

I saw another post that suggested rebooting the laptop with the cable unplugged. I'going to try that next.

I'm running Windows XP Pro on a new computer, AMD 5400, 2GB RAM and a 500 GB HD. Everything appears to be great and working fine. I do notice that the hard drive LED blinks every second or so, all the time. Even if I go away and do not do anything, it still appears to blink. The sequence looks like, blink, blink a half second later, then another, then a double blink and then it starts with the single blinks. I can hear the hard drive heads doing something. What can this be? Is it normal? My old computer, on Windows 2000 Pro, did a blink every few seconds, if I remember correctly.

Why is it the longer I have a hard drive the more it slows down? I do upkeep like defragment, disk cleanup, and yet, it takes forever to load a program, from a cold boot to a noticeable end in running startup programs its 2mins 45sec. that is ridiculous, I've seen computers start up in 45secs. Current computer specs listed on profile. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've been noticing after re-installing Win 7 that I get random floppy drive seeks and the hard drive light flashes like crazy and then everything is fine again.I have Clamwin AV,Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D installed, but that's it,no Windows Defender or Essentials AV.Any ideas what causes this? It's a minor annoyance, but I just want to make sure it's not damaging anything. Also would Readyboost help me? I've got 2 gigs dual channel PC3200 ram(or I could go with 2.5 gig single channel PC2700)and a P4 at 3 gig until I can afford to upgrade my comp. This is my first post in quite awhile so I hope this is in the right place Thanks.

A:Random floppy drive seek and hard drive light flashing

I have a fix for the floppy drive problem. Unplug it!

But er, it could easily be the AV software doing it, or possibly the Windows indexer.

To track it down you could try catching it in the act (if it's prolonged enough) by using the "Resource Monitor" found on the Performance tab of the Task Manager. Click on the "Disk" tab and wait for it to happen and see if something new shows up as doing disk IO.

Though also, disabling the AV software temporarily and see if it stops might be a first try...

Dear Fellow Techies,
For the past two days, I have noticed my computer (Windows PC) hard drive speeding up to a roar and then slowing down. I will momentarily lose my cable modem connection and will automatically come right back in. Is my hard drive getting ready to go? I am running a Compaq Presario Windows PC Pentium 4 - 3 Mega Hertz - 3 gigs of RAM - 160 Hard Drive with Plenty of Space and Windows Vista Basic. I have Norton 360 on board keeping a clean disc with all the usual precautions. I am backing up to Carbonite. I think my hard drive may be going down the Proverbial "tubes". What do you think?

My custom build computer seems to boot/run/shutdown quite slow. I have a 2.9 GHz dual core AMD running with 8Gb of Ram. (See System Specs under my post)
The performance index within windows indicates that the hard drive has the lowest number, a 4.5. The hard drive is a previously used 200Gb Seagate which may be a couple years old.
The computer boot/shutdown speed rivals my almost 4 year old laptop which has only 2Gb ram and a single core processor when on battery power. All of my other newer computers, which run Vista, and have at most 4Gb ram performs faster.

A:Hard drive slowing down windows 7??

Could be. Do you have the same gadgets and other addons as the Vista computers. Having more stuff running would increase the time of course. Also the write speed for the drive might have some effect. Have you had a look at this. Shut Down -Speed Up

What is the make and model of your hard drive? I would go to their web site and download their hard drive diagnostics and run them against your drive first. Sounds like the virus problem may have corrupted a boot sector on your drive.

Hi,.my PC froze a few days ago and I got a message out of the blue something like "corrupted files, use chkdsk".
So I ran chkdsk and it seemed to do its work as the screen was filled with dozens of scrolling messages for 10 minutes such as "chkdsk replacing files" etc.
But since then my PC has been running very slow because the hard drive "working" light is on for long periods as if something is going on in the background, slowing everything up. For example the light has been on and the drive has been whirring away all the time I've been typing this post.
I've run AVG and Adaware scans with no result.
Any idea what's going on?

Hey all,

Just got a Sager NP1830 laptop with 7 on it.

Is it normal for my hard drive indicator to blink like every second?

I also hear pretty audible hard drive activity noise even when the computer is doing nothing.

I just switched from a Mac so I'm not sure if this is normal.

Thanks,
Brady

A:Hard Drive keeps blinking and I hear noise

Some system spec's would be helpful.....if the system runs out of ram, it will use the paging file on the hard drive, that can cause a lot of activity....It also could be the drive trying to read from bad sectors....or even a failing drive....

Hi,

I have an external drive that was working fine till today(Simple Tech 250 GB USB Drive). I had to restart the hard drive and now my computer does not recognize it any more. I have tried different USB ports...even tried with my lap top, but it is not recognized. I could not find this under my computer>device manager>

As expected, I have lots of stuff in my hard drive and it would be a nightmare to think about losing all that When I switch on the hard drive, there is a solid red light and a blinking blue light. Is there any way to correct this?? And more importantly, if the hard drive is a goner, any reasonable ways to recover the data??

Thanks in anticipation!

A:Issue with External Hard Drive-Just Blinking

First off, I suspect you'll have to remove the physical drive from the USB enclosure and connect it to a desktop machine as a secondary drive as the next step.

It's quite possible the USB enclosure has died, which is actually more common than the drive dying. If so, all the data is still there. If you connect it directly and can't access the drive, then we'll have to discuss recovery options.

My Latitude E6430 was updated from win7pro to win10pro - no BOIS settings were changed. It has 8 GB of ram inspected, reseated and tested. It hangs with a blinking hard drive led that requires pressing the power button to complete on any restart. No problems booting from power button or shutdown.
I tried to install suggested updates for the Network and Chipset on the support site, locally and in safe mode - Say they install but not to the most current.  The current BIOS A16 won't update to the current A18 or A17. Could it be that pressing the power button on restart clears the bios and driver updates?
Thank you your time to review this, my first post.

A:Hard Drive Light / Hard Drive Problems

Hi sdh31873

Do not put both hard drives on the same string as the controller will default to the lowest speed hard drive. In fact I would think about getting rid of the old drive entirely as its age means that it should be very slow.

Have you tried turning the led HD connector to the motherboard over?

You can get an Promise PCI controller card that will allow you to add some extra IDE ports. The controller will show the devices on it to be D0, D1, D2 etc. It looks like a SCSI device to the system but hooks up IDE devices.

You need to FDISK and format a new hard drive before windows can see it.

This may be a question many have asked before but can the ageing of a hard drive have significant effects on your computer's performance? The one in my current PC is about four years old and I can say for definite that my computer is slower now then it once was. I'm not surprised by any means but was wondering if this is more due to more programmes and memory being used or because the hard drive is becoming worn out?

A:Hard drive ageing slowing things down?

The hard drive is the least likely cause of your computer slowing down.Running checkdisk occasionally is always a good idea though.

Here are the main causes Why is my PC slowing downand How can I make my PC run faster.

My computer is running realllllly slow, and I'm not sure why. There's a lot of extra space on the computer, and Hardly anything running in the back ground. I just put a new hard drive in the computer, as it has done this previously, It slowed to a point where it would freeze and no longer work, until one day I turned it on, went to log in and it automatically restarted, so I discovered that the hard drive had crashed, I put a new one in it and it was fine, until about 2 weeks ago, when it started slowing down majorly. Does it maybe have a Virus that my Free Avast isn't finding?

Anything helps!

I recently installed a Western Digital SATA 250gig HD on my E-Machine W3107 as a secondary drive. I needed an adapter since this machine has an IDE cable and the original (main) drive is IDE. After installing and formatting, everything is working properly (to my knowledge), but the HD light is always on. I've adjusted my pagefile (since I also upgraded my RAM from 512meg to 2gig) so that on the main drive, it's set to 3-4gig and 4-5gig on the secondary (WD) drive. I have also gone into "msconfig" and stopped all non-windows processes to no avail. Is there something else that might fix this, or should I even worry about it? Thanks in advance!!

swap file. After setting the new size, the system is going to mung the HD
to make it active ... it may take a long time.

suggest you reset it to something more reasonable,
shutdown most services,
disconnect from the Net,
and defrag the volume.

then resize as you please and reboot.

A:hard drive light

First check in Task Manager (processes tab - click on "CPU" to order the % of use highest to lowest) to see what application is hogging the CPU, it *might* be the same one that is causing the HDD activity.

I would also suspect a trojan or other malware as a possibility.

Also make sure that the HDD actually has useable space left (My Computer - select drive with right click - Properties)

My processor recently crashed, so I installed a new one. I decided to upgrade the fan while I was at it. Since then, the computer runs like a champ. However, if the computer goes into standby and I bring it out of it, the hard drive light is constantly solid and the computer responds much slower every now and then. If I restart the computer, the problem goes away until it goes into standby again. I've ran a virus scan, did a check disk, and double-checked the connections. Anyone have any idea what could cause this? I'm stumped.

I'm running a Pentium D processor, Asus P5LP-LE motherboard, and Windows XP.

A:Hard Drive Light Always On

Right click the Task Bar and choose Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab, see what program is using the most CPU usage when it is running slow. Disable or uninstall if you don't need it.

I sat down today to find out why I couldn't awaken my hard drive after finding it asleep. It is set to never sleep. After a manual shutdown and upon boot up, the hard drive light went out within a few seconds of the appearance of the desktop. Just before the light went out I could move the cursor, but the boot up process never completes and the cursor can no longer be moved after it goes out. I tried this three or four times with the same result. I run xp pro on that machine which is a six or seven year old hp, I don't know the processor type. Any help is appreciated.

Even when Task Manager and Resource Monitor show no disk activity, my hard drive light won't go off. My computer has two hard drives, a 250 and a 1 TB. The 250 has Windows 8, the 1 TB has Windows 7.

If I boot into 7, it's fine.

The light is fine as the computer is doing pre-OS loading but it seems like once Windows 8 gets control of the drive, the light won't turn off.

I have a single drive in my computer, and since installing Windows 8, the drive activity light blinks at approximately two second intervals, continuously. It did not do this under XP.

The light on my tower unit is continously on,or sometimes constantly flicking on and off very rapidly the one that tells you that the hard drive is doing something. I've not noticed this light being on continously before and the computer is responding very slowly and often freezes. I'm not sure what is causing it, I've looked in my start up list from msconfig but I couldn't pin anything there down

Can anyone enlighten me as to what is doing this?

Hello everyone I have had huge issues with my custom made computer recently I have never have had any issues with my Hitachi HDS DLE OS HDD until today last night I defraged my computer last night and today I've had critical hard indicator Hard LED 1 instability Blinking Drive and Primary second HDD drive failures hangs On the first failure the hard drive stated Primary Hard Drive instability and 1 second Blinking HDD indicator LED making a strange noise on Primary Hard Drive instability and 1 second Blinking HDD indicator LED and off for a minute the entire time all applications and services stopped responding including Adobe Premiere Pro CS which I suspect was part of the cause in fact the stopped responding error stopped responding I attempted to ctrl alt delete my way out of the problem but that threw a silent error right click on the desktop made the Windows Explorer desktop process stop responding pressing quot all applications quot in the start menu made the start menu stop responding the HDD indicator LED stopped going on when the HDD was in use and started flashing for a short period of time followed by a second pause and all this continued going on for five minutes until I held down the power button In which time Adobe Premiere worked for a few seconds but didn't save any work that wasn't already saved before the ordeal And to top it all off after successfully booting up the computer the System Log only had history of a reported event where the kernel wasn't shut down successfully The next times ranged from minutes to hour of working perfectly fine but then the same issue but without the hard drive making the strange noise it did the first time Now the HDD indicator LED flashes on and of with second intervals like it was when the failures had started but it also now goes on when the HDD is active and I haven't had any critical failures since Any sugestions on what I can do to find out what I could do to figure out what's going wrong what I can do to fix it

A:Primary Hard Drive instability and 1 second Blinking HDD indicator LED

Usually I'd ask about SMART readings and such, but given your explanation of the situation you're in I will cut to the chase.

IMMEDIATELY backup any critical data you have, your current HDD (the Hitachi) is on its last legs and judging from what you've experienced it's highly possible that HDD can die at any moment. I cannot stress this enough, IMMEDIATELY backup any critical data you have.

Once you have your data secured so that you don't suffer from data loss, look into replacing that HDD ASAP. HDDs do not make significant noise during normal operations, as such the "strange" noises you heard are abnormal and a tell-tale sign that something is wrong. If the "strange" noise that you heard was similar to a "clicking" sound, then that is a definitive sign that your HDD is on the brink of dying.

What I believe happened, judging from your explanation, is that the HDD was already on the fringe of being on its last legs but the defragmenting operation that you performed finally pushed it over its limits. A HDD defragmentation operation is very intensive and places more physical stress than usual on your HDD.

Again, IMMEDIATELY backup any critical data you have so you don't suffer from data loss. Securing your data is of the utmost priority right now. We'll be happy to help you with replacing the HDD, but we need to get more important things out of the way first.

Starting 2 days ago, the Hard Drive Access Indicator light is on steady when the computer is on, but blinking when the computer is off. I tried turning the computer on and off a couple of times, unplugging and to no avail the light continues to blink when the computer is off.

Does anyone have any feedback or means to correct this situation?

New problem...

My hard drive light blinks every second or two, and is accompanied by the 'reading hard drive' sound.

Why is this?

More importantly - can any of you please help me fix it (i.e., stop it from blinking / reading the drive every second or two)?

Many thanks.

A:My hard drive light blinks every second or two..

Hi

simple fix...turn off the computer

no seriously, even though you arent using the computer , it is still working away, reading and writing to the drive, windows doesnt stop just because you arent using it.

There are many processes running on the average computer and its these that are using the drive.

For some time now my Hard Drive light remains ON even with no programs running. It blinks as I start up in the morning but soon goes ON and remains so. I've checked Task Manager and had a local geek help me look at processes running, but stopping everything but essential Windows systems, the HD light won't go out. I have uninstalled my antivirus program and the light will go out, but it reappears at next startup. I've uninstalled my antispyware program and the light will go out, but it reappears at next startup.

Can anyone offer a suggestion? I've also changed AV programs but with the same results.

A:Constant Hard Drive Light

Maybe those programs you removed...are running scans (which would account for HD activity).

Uninstalling a program shouild have no impact on a hard drive...unless doing so terminates a running application.

This week I noticed my hard drive light is always on. It used to be predictable with the computer slowing when the light was on during certain operations and then normal speed when the light was off. There is no noticeable slowdown. 24GB of 40GB western digital drive is free. I compared running processes with another similar machine and all were explainable or mandatory. I've run adaware and cleaned up, defrag regularly.

Could the light mean the drive has a problem or is a mystery process doing something to me?

I came home Saturday night around 3am to look at my computer monitor led yellow. I knew something was wrong. I have tried to replace the battery on the mother board swapped the motherboard tried switching the video card slots everything. I am left clueless. I am not very experienced in working on computers so any help would be greatly appreciated. I am going to try replacing my video card next. I have also tried plugging a different hard drive in and it still makes no beeps or anything on power up but I know it is getting power because the fan is working. The Hd LED is SOLID RED!!

A:Constant Hard Drive Led Light on

if u get no beeps, try flashing the bios. look in your mobo's manual how to do it. it should be shortin some pins using the jumper provided there. if that doesnt work, try takin out the ram. if your comp starts beeping that means its the ram thats the problem. check your mobo for any bulging capacitors. or no...you said you changed your mobo. if you have any pci cards plugged in, take them out and also disconnect all ide or sata devices so you only have the cpu, video card and memory plugged in...if that doesnt work, like i already said, start by removing the ram first...if no beeps are heard, proceed to the video card...if it still doesnt work, change the power supply...if again, doesnt work, remove the cpu and if u have another one, try installing it. wish you the best of luck

..... yet nothing showing on the screen.

Just had an anguished cry for help from a friend of mine:

"Whilst putting all the new wires etc in the back of the old PC for my daughter, the tower fell on its side. It stayed on. It is still powering up but the Hard Drive light is on permanently and nothing is showing on the monitor. I have restarted and powered off and up again but it is still the same. HELP !!!"

I don't know much about the system, other than it is a fairly old Athlon XP of indeterminate size. It runs XP Pro.

Anyone have any solutions/suggestions? If so I would be immensely grateful!

Cheers!

A:Hard drive light permanently on....

You need to get inside it and check both the power and data cables on the back of the hard drive and the data cable to the mobo to see if they are seated properly!!!

It may be best to pull the plugs out and refit them to make sure!!!!

My Pc's Hard Drive power LED light stays on. It started doing this shortly after I did a complete HD re-format and install of Win XP.
Is this just a coincidence?
The drive only makes noises when accessed for a read or write function, otherwise there is no noise from the drive, even though the LED stays on.
It never did this before!
Is this something that needs to be corrected? How?
Starting in Safe Mode has the same results--LED stays on.
Thanks for any help.

Just recently purchase a Dell 1535 laptop with Vista. It runs great and the cpu usage is very low but I've noticed that the hard drive light is constantly blinking. I've read on some other forums about this problem and some say the cause is Vista doing its superfetch process. Is this the case? and does this blinking ever go away?

thank you

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a Dell Dimension E521 with Windows XP Home Edition OS. I have noticed that the light indicating the hard drive is being accessed blinks all the time. My old HP ( Win 98) didn't do this. Is this an XP thing or is there a problem? I have Norton security suite installed and use Adaware And Spy Bot. No viruses shown.

Thanks
Jerry

A:Blinking Hd Light

The blinking LED is indicating that it is constantly working. Norton security suite is what we call a resource hogger meaning it is taking the speed out of your computer. What you could is is download process explorer from the freeware link in my sig and try to determine what is keeping your PC busy.

Are you using P2P applications like Limewire?

Hi,
There is a red light blinking on my Gateway Lap Top,both when it is plugged into electric outlet, and when not plugged in...is it a sign my battery's are gone or is there another problem.?
thanks,
Jules

A:Red light blinking on Lap Top

You'll have to be more specific. What's the model or serial number of the Laptop? Also what does the manual say the light is for?

If the battery is dying then the laptop shouldn't run very long on battery, maybe even just a matter of minutes before it shuts down.

A:HDD light keeps blinking

Roland9,
Welcome to SF. The simple and quick answer is no.....not an issue to fret about. I would ask what Anti-virus programs you're running? And always a good idea to keep them updated daily and run them often....but that's just me.

A:all i get is a blinking light

If I'm following you right........You had XP installed on your hard drive while it "was out" of your machine?
This is most likely your problem. XP does an "inventory" of installed hardware on the machine it is being installed onto.
You have most likely wasted your time with that.
Was the drive formatted an "clean installed"?
If so you have lost everything anyway..........So

You'll have to start over.
Do you have the XP CD?

Hi,

I upgraded my HP Pavilion a1540n Desktop to Windows 7 a week ago. Ever since, my hard drive light constantly blinks. After looking at the disk activity in the Windows Resource Monitor and doing some research I am leaning towards the page file as the problem. I am not sure if that is in fact the problem as there seems to be quite a few processes creating high disk activity, including Firefox profile cache, $Logfile, and MpWppTracing.bin. I only have 1GB of RAM. Would I be better served to add RAM before doing anything else like using Cacheman?

A:Why does my Hard Drive Activity Light Constantly Blink

Do you actually have constant hard drive activity, or is the light just blinking?

I recently reinstalled windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop  ( Intel Core I3,  4 gb ram).  Now the hard drive light is on nearly constant with a rare flash here and there and it is sluggish. It takes about 45 secs to 1 minute to launch a web browser for example and startup and shutdown are also very slow. .  I have installed all of the windows updates so it is now current.  There is bare minimum of programs installed.  I have defragmented the hard drive and checked it for any problems but it came back clean.  I also ran memtest and the memory shows no errors.   Any help with this would be appreciated.

A:Hard drive light on constantly and sluggish performance

Have you tried running the Manufacture of the Hard Drive diagnostic software? I know you said you checked it but you didnt say how.

Hi, I just noticed earlier today that my hdd light is staying on. I mean on like the power light is on, not flickering when the hard drive is being used. Is this the light going bad, or is the motherboard going bad? Please don't tell me that the mobo is goind bad.

A:Solved: Hard drive activity light stays on

I had that happen with a brand new build a couple of years ago. Changing cases made no difference. The retailer checked the motherboard and replaced it.

Hey guys!

Recently, I've been noticing the hard drive "busy" light starts flashing a lot when it is not in use. The computer has been running slower since I noticed this. Websites "hang" for a second or two when trying to visit URLs as well.

Last night, I decided to get rid of AVG and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead. Left it scanning overnight and it found a potential threat. I deleted the threat before taking note of the name of it. I did another scan after restarting and it nothing else was detected.

Afterwards, I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, which found nothing. I also defragmented my hard drive and cleaned out some clutter with CCleaner (both haven't been done in months).

I have been using the computer all day and it still has the same issues. Not too sure what else to do next. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Luis

A:Computer won't Boot, hard drive light stays on

clear the CMOS (best to unplug the system and pull out the battery on the motherboard)
Do that for 30 minutes then connect back and turn on the system. If you still have issues then the RAM Voltage is not compatible with your mother board.
