Xeon E3 or i7

Q: Xeon E3 or i7

Xeon E3 or i7??? I have asked this question before but that has been some time ago. I am needing a good cpu that will be used for video editing for up to 4-5 hours a day. I know a Xeon is made for 24/7 use and comes from a better dye so I was wondering what people's thoughts were. There will be no overclocking so don't go there. Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Xeon E3 or i7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Xeon E3 or i7

Its going to depend on the chip of course, but I would say in general an i7 would be the better option. If you go with a 6 core 12 thread i7 you will have a very nice video editing machine. Thats my opinion, its in reality going to be up to exactly what your needs beyond just video editing will be to decide what is a better idea.

Hi, Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5? Which processor would you recommend? A shop told me, that E3-1535M v5 is no longer available by Lenovo and that Xeon E3-1550M v5 would be the best. Is this true? Thanks for any advice!

A:P50: Xeon E3-1535M v5 or Xeon E3-1550M v5?

Saw your other post asking about optical drive. I got a feeling that it's either a joke or scam. 1) There's no optical drive option for P50 (of course we are talking about built-in drive, not the external one).2) There's no E3-1550M v5 option for P50.  In fact, even the E3-1535M has limited availability.  e.g. E3-1535M is available in Japan but not in US. Good luck with the 'special built' P50.

I recently bought a Xeon 2.8 533 512 (prod BX80532KE2800DSL72F) with a view to building a mono-CPU system. The box, however, states 'Supports Dual-processor ONLY / 604-pin micro-PGA).

Is this correct? Do I need to DUAL chip the board or will it work as a standalone?

If I need 2 do I get exactly the same one to create the matched pair or is there a different one I need to get to compliment the architecture to let it function at peak?

A:Xeon CPU

Yes, you need two that are exactly the same. Out of interest, why did you buy a Xeon if you don't want to run multiple processors? They are nothing more than a P4 with a higher pricetag and SMP support.

I am building a gaming computer and I am wondering if a Core i5 or a Quad-Core Xeon is better for gaming!

A:Solved: Xeon or i5?

There's lots of different models in each family, but Xeon's are better for workstations or servers. If you are building a gaming computer the i5 or an i7 is generally the cheaper and better choice.

Not sure if this is in the proper section but here goes:

I'm still running a first gen i7-920 on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P, overclocked to 3.8GHz with a couple of GTX670s in SLI. Was thinking of keeping the graphics cards and SSDs and upgrading CPU to a 6 core XEON (which I would also try to overclock). Problem is that the X5650 through 70 does not appear to be on the Gigabyte site as a supported CPU BUT I've seen some threads implying that it will work with this board. Is there anyone that might be able to confirm that here?

Also, If I decide to just pick one up and try it, will Windows 7 x64 continue to run with the CPU swap or will it complain?

A:Xeon compatible?

I'm actually confused, because according to the upgrade list, the x5650 isn't on there, but it is a Socket 1366 processor, which is the socket on your mobo. So I can't say for certain, but in theory it should work.

Also it shouldn't cause any issues with your OS, since you're only changing one piece of hardware.

Buying a new pc for typical office use (word, excel etc) which will be connected to 3 monitors and typically have several programs running.

Currently thinking of a Dell and the salesman suggested the Dell Precision T5500 with a xeon 2.13Ghz 4MB chip because, he tells me, it can handle a 3 monitor set up better. But its pricey

I was thinking of the cheaper option of the Precision T3400 with the core 2 duo 3Ghz 6MB chip but i'm not sure about the 3 monitor set up.

Which machine/ chip would be faster/ handle multiple open programs/ handle a 3 monitor set up better?

I have a question about Xeon processor's, would it be more efficient to run 3 or 4 processor's in a server, is it better for them to work in tandem?

A:Xeon processor

Unless you're going to be running a file server for 100 or more computers using it heavily, I wouldn't go over 2 processors (Athlon MPs aren't extremely expensive, and do the job well). However, I'd set up the network as follows for 50 or less computers:

Dual Processor (doesnt have to be fast) Domain Controller

Dual Processor Domain Controller back up (very important -- it would SUCK to lose all your user names and domain information, and remember, downtime reflects poorly on you)

Dual Processor (faster then others) File Server
And add File Servers as needed. This set up is cost efficient, and if you use RAID 5, you wont lose data if one disk drive goes. You keep the File Servers seperate from domain controllers, and keep everything running well.
So, to answer your question, NO, I do not think anything over 2 processors is needed.

A:AMD 64 or Dual XEON

I would still get a AthlonXP... AMD64's are still to new and expensive, and Dual XEON's are wayyyyyyyyyy to expensive and will not give you any noticiable improvements in gaming.

Untill amd64's get established, if you really want a dual cpu system, get a Dual Athlon MP one, they are far cheaper.

based off the responses i got when talking about a dual athlon mp system... it doesnt look so great. so i'm thinking of some other options. i've got a friend who does 3d animation and uses an older gateway server. It's got a dual xeon motherboard but he only uses one processor... when i had the chance of working on this system, it seemed REALLY fast. it could be that he had a SCSI drive that spun so fast you could hear it grind, or it could be that he did't have all the clutter on it and was running windows NT 4. but like i said, it was REALLY fast. i'm just asking for some thoughts on this because right now (besides the INSANE cost for a dual xeon motherboard) it seems like a viable option. thanks!

A note about alternate Xeon processors which I wanted to make available for other customers considering the ThinkPad P50 Mobile Workstation:

Lenovo does not offer the 1545 or 1575 on P50. This is because both of these CPUs are paired with the Iris Pro graphics which requires a different thermal assembly than Lenovo designed for the ThinkPad P50.
While those CPUs are slightly faster (0.1GHz) than the CPUs paired with Iris graphics (P530), the trade-off to accommodate the bigger TDP didn?t make sense as the vast majority of Lenovo customers ask for discrete graphics and really don?t want/use the Intel integrated graphics in the first place.

Hello jmeader,

Congratulations on your new son.

Yeah, you will just need to have some good thermal paste between the heat sink and CPU. Artic Silver paste is a good one to use.

Be sure that both surfaces are clean, and only to put about a small pea size bubble of paste on the center of the CPU to smash flat with the heat sink. You do not want paste to squeeze out of the sides an get on anything else.

Hi all,

I was thinking of a EVO W6000 DUAL XEON 2.2GHz because i can get a refurbed one for £140, or
a Core2duo based rig (probably E2180, then OC it) which will mostly likely cost me double that.

Now, it is only a test rig, but i'd be insterested to know what you guys think will give greater performance out of the 2 rigs.

If i had a E6400 v dual Xeon 2.2, which would you favour (just comparing approximate like for like clock speeds here)

Also, would you recommend dual boots from the same hdd, or separate installs on separate hdd's. If separate then i may struggle with the EVO pc.

Thanks for any advice.

A:which is better 2 x Xeon or 1 x dual core ?

I do not know too much about the differences of the two architectures, but from the basic info you provide, it seems the dual core option will be much better due to the massive clock speed difference. Also, the 2x Xeon is probably using an obsolete chipset that may not compete well with the dual core setup, therfore being a lesser performer.

From the little I know about the Intel Pentium D, they function in a similar fashion as a real 2x cpu setup.

I have a Pentium II Xeon 450 CPU, 1MB cache. Basically, I just want to know if it will work on a motherboard that normally uses regular CPUs (non Xeon).

More specifically, I'm using an Abit BE6 board that has a PII 350 in it. Would I be able to take out the 350, pop in the Xeon, and expect it to work?

Thanks for the help.

A:really easy PII xeon question.

Sorry apparently not, the xeon processors need a slot 2 motherboare, the be6 is a slot one. From what I can read it is not compatible with the 440bx chipset either

The Slot-2 interface features the 330 pins the Pentium II/III Xeon processor plugs into,
unfortunately this is a considerably longer interface than the 242 pins of the Slot-1
interface the Pentium II/III processor uses. With the Socket-370 Celeron converting it to a
Slot-1 motherboard wasn't much of a problem and wasn't that difficult to imagine since the
Celeron was originally designed for use with Slot-1 motherboards. The Xeon wasn't.

I believe that going from a P4 to a Xeon, requires a motherboard change.

Anyone built a Dual Xeon system with Supermicro P4DP6 board before? It will not even power up at all on Supermicro, but runs fine on a Gigabyte 8IPXPR-C. According to Supermicro, a special Supermicro dual xeon Power supply must be used for it to power up. Anyone know if this is true? I don't want to go through the hassel with returns if this is bogus.

I just installed a new HP Proliant Server with 2 Xeon 3.4GHz CPUs.
The OS is Windows Server 2003 (Small Business Server) and warned that there were more than 2 processors on the machine which might cause software failures later.
The Device Manager sees 4 Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.40GHz, and all are "working properly".

These are the 90nm process technology chips (over 3.2GHz) 64-bit with 1MB L2 Cache and no L3 cache and a 800MHz bus. The bus is running 971MHz.

The board is all PCI Express and PCI-X slots running a SCSI backbone hot-swap RAID.
So, how do I tell it it only has two brains?

A:Part # for Xeon v2 enabled motherboards

You can google "Z820 spare parts" and in the bottom section you'll see the listed parts below.  I'd only go for those upper level numbers: You also can do a HP Parts Surfer search.  I do those via the hierarchy approach, and as you go through into the personal workstation section go to the Z800 family, and the Z820 will be under that.  Look at that promo Z820 at the top, and in there you'll see the processor section with all the v2 processors (Ivy rather than Sandy Bridge).  Again, I'd only get one from the upper numbered series.  Which of those 3?  You'll have to choose:For any thinking that they should try eBay for one of these processors used...... there are E5 2680v2 ones there.  They have only one sSpec code, SR1A6, from the Intel Ark site.  As with the processors for the xw workstations you never want to buy a Q series (qualification sample), and also don't ever buy a "Confidential" one either.  Those will have different microcode values that BIOS looks at before it will proceed with boot.  Some BIOS upgrades from HP include a new microcode list of approved processors, so you want to update BIOS to the latest before you do the processor transplant.  We do our homework and try these unsupported-by-HP things, and sometimes get bitten.... I feel your pain. Obviously, you'd have been lucky to have had a Z820 with a built in "Revision 1" motherboard (with the later boot block date listed in BIOS), and this issue has been posted about in the forum before.  Another gotcha is putting a high wattage processor under a standard HP heatsink/fan..... some hot processors require presence of a HP "Performance" heatsink/fan or the motherboard will balk.  Here's those processor pics... your's should look like the bottom one:   Finally, Skylarking has posted in this forum on how to get from the normal BIOS interface (in the serial number, etc. area) to the service interface that lets you enter, one time, the codes/serial numbers, etc. noted above for the circumstance when you have a brand new motherboard and need to enter such stuff.

A:My Thinkpad P50 with Intel Xeon and 64 GB ram freq...

A couple of questions: 1.   Which OS and browser are you using?2.   Do you have a Smart Card reader installed? The reason I'm asking is that, once in a while, while using IE 11 on Windows 7 on my similarly-provisioned P70, the browser simply stops working.  Upon close inspection, it seems that the MFA client sometimes fails, even while not being used (I have the reader for future-proofing the machine but have no smart card inserted at present). The latest driver seems to be less likely to cause this problem, but it has not completely been eliminated. Could this be your issue?

Hello everyone. I am a 3D arch viz artist, using 3Ds Max + Vray render. I am looking for additional render power.

My budget is around 2.000 Euros, so I was considering 2 options:

A guy is selling a HP DL580 G7 server, which includes 32 GB ram and 4x Xeon E7540 2 GHz (6-core CPU, based on Nehalem), which is a total of 24 cores / 48 threads.

For the same money, I could buy a 5960X system or 2 systems running a Core i7 4790 CPUs. The hardware in my country is a bit more expensive when compared to USA / EU.

I can't find any benchmarks for the E7540 CPUs, so I am not sure if 4xE7540 would outperform 2 modern 4-core Core i7 CPUs (like the 4790K). That would be 24cores vs 8 cores / 48 threads vs 16 threads.

Vray render uses all of the available CPU cores, no limit there.

A:4 x Xeon E7540 vs Intel 5960X

The 5960X system, if for the same money would be the best buy.

Hello joemamabesser and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I do not see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. There is an item with a missing file that can be fixed so let's do that while you are here.Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.Non-malware related performance issues can be handled in the XP forum. According to the Z800 data sheet, the X5690 is supported. This is a high power Xeon and has a max TDP of 130W so you need a high capacity heatsink with these hot CPU's. I believe not all heatsinks are the same... Others may be able to specify exact part numbers..

Upgraded to Win7 Pro x64 from Home Premium x64 (Anytime Upgrade online), specifically to add second physical processor...

Used MSCONFIG and EasyBCD 2.2 to "force" Windows to look for more cores... nada!

Mobo BIOS will not "see" second processor, at all. Only recognizes one in either socket.

Dell docs and forums insist it is dual-socket supported in "Pro" and "Ultimate" versions of Windows.

Replaced mobo and running latest Dell BIOS (A08) to no avail...

Two tubes of thermal paste and two mobo's later and I'm outta patience.

Is this true?

In Newegg they have normal 1155 boards and 1155 Server boards.
Since normal boards are much cheaper and I won't use all the features in server boards I was planning to get a normal board.

Should I get a server board instead??

Hey guys

It's been a while since I've been on here but I have a bit of an issue.
It might be noting but I'd like to get it checked out.

I used one of those "driver update" programs that scan your hardware and then gives you back your out of date drivers.
Since updating an Intel driver I've now got an "Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) Processor Family PCI Express Root Port - 0101" listed which I don't think was there before.
Problem is I have an I7 2600k so why would it be showing as another CPU model?

I've tried removing the device and hoping Windows will pick it up again but it still came back as a Xeon.
Has anyone else got an i7 but in the "System Devices" menu in "Device Manager" got this listed?

Thank you in advance

A:Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation listed with an i7 2600k?

That's the problem with those 3rd party driver updaters, they tell you what they want and if you don't know you get stung. My advice is get the drivers from the manufacturer, that way you get the right one's for your comp. Now for the fix if you have a restore point prior to doing the updateing of drivers do it now, if you have a backup image you can use that, when all else fails backup your data and do a clean install or use the factory image on your computer.

It would have been nice if Intel offered that same choice in it's Core line. Many users prefer a PCI graphics card and don't use the on-chip graphics, so why not a choice, like with the Xeon line?

Compare Intel? Products,

A:Sandy Bridge E3 Xeon vs i7 Core comparison

well the xeon is a server cpu not ideally suited to home computing.

but intel do offer non integrated graphics by choosing a different model, the i7 950 3.4ghz and the i7 2600/k for example one is sandy one isn't.

while it is well priced at around ?170 and uses socket 1155 it's just not cheap enough to ignore the i7 range.

when you look at the compatable range on motherboards they are all server boards listed i don't think anyone would be able to garuntee a standard 1155 board would work, the motherboard
Intel? Server Board S1200BTS costs around ?180
Intel? Server Board S1200BTL this board only supports ecc ram which usually costs a bit more.

the difference in price from a standard 1155 board for home use negates the cost difference of the cpu.

Grazie.

First off I need to explain a few things I am quite the newbie to hardware and everything I quot know quot has only come from trial and error I am not one of those techy guys and most of what I say will be be entirely based on things that I have learned through my own experiences - Not from facts I make my decisions based on things that I assume and perceive I apologise for any offense or - questions. Intel DP 5050 Xeon A gaming few irritation I may cause within this post I don t stick to the quot Intel Xeon DP 5050 - A few gaming questions. norm quot and I do not tend to reach out for help unless I really truly feel that I need it In this case I feel the need to ask for help So here I am I know my system is old Please do not blatantly tell me to get rid of it or to buy an i i etc I would like the questions that I am asking to be answered directly and to the point Piriform Speccy Information - http speccy piriform com results ob YNpOUBnt RAXigeuPSVK Well I ve had a Dell Precision Workstation for some time now and I have used it for Online games such as MineCraft and RuneScape without any issues However I am not receiving as great as a performance as I assumed I would have I know little to nothing about Xeon Processors and their capabilities I only really learn as I go and since this is the first time that I have ever actually had a hands on experience with Xeon Processors it s a new thing to me This particular Workstation came stock with GB of some old FB-DDR MHz Ram two Intel Xeon DP processors and a Nvidia Quadro NVS attached to a Dell DT Server Motherboard The only thing I changed was the graphics card I placed an EVGA GB Nvidia GTX Ti inside of it I was worried that I might have an issue with Bottlenecking but it seemed fine However as I stated above my performance in the games I play - MineCraft and RuneScape seemed to suffer slightly In RuneScape my fps hovered around - I could never get past that fps mark I always played in the lowest possible graphical settings In MineCraft my fps was closer to an average of - fps And here is my first question - By placing that graphics card within my system was I bottlenecking it I have heard a few people say that Xeon processors are not particularly good for gaming The ones I have are comparable to a Prescott M Extreme Edition CPU Old yet decent performance for it s age When I saw the system I pretty much acted on impulse and bought it Two processors with four virtual cores each meant a total of eight cores Not to mention GB of ram This combination made it seem highly appealing to me I do not regret the decision at all in fact I am actively attempting to find out more about it and upgrade it if possible Which leads me to my next question - I recently purchased two Intel Xeon E SLANR processors yet my system refused to boot up Why According to the Ark Intel archive both the s and the E s use the LGA socket So I don t understand why these newer CPUs refuse to work on my machine If I try to turn it on the fan spins very loudly but that s it The screen remains black and the system does not boot Not even to the Bios menu I sort of thought about this afterwards and wondered if it might be due to the speed of the processor For example the E has a MHz FSB speed whereas the only has a MHz FSB That is a massive difference Then again I know little to nothing about this so all I can do is assume More recently - Yesterday in fact my system crashed with a Bsod error quot Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed quot This continued to happen every time I attempted to boot up my system so I started with Safe Mode and uninstalled my graphics driver I then proceeded to reinstall it and the same Bsod happened immediately upon startup I then figured that I had fried my Nvidia GTX Ti It was constantly running at c and swapped it out for an older card I had laying around an old OverClocked BFG Tech Nvidia GeForce GT I installed the proper driver for it and it has continued to wo... I don't know anything about Xeon processors and I'm looking for information on how they compare or rank with other types. I've looked at Tom's Hardware where they have lots of CPU comparison charts; but, I just don't see anything on Xeon.

I am familiar with the Pentium 4, Socket 478 and it would be nice if I could find something that made a comparison between the Xeon and the Socket 478; but, I realize that might be asking too much.

Suggestions appreciated.

Its really Simple Try googling XEON Vs Socket 478/ C2D etc you will get what you require

I am using an Intel DH77KC motherboard with an Intel Xeon E3-1230V2 CPU (Supported according to Intel website - which replaced my previous Intel Core i5 3470. After installing it properly I powered on the PC but got the audio error code (BEEP-BEEP pause BEEP-BEEP).

I know that the Xeon does not have an IGPU but I use an NVIDIA GTX 970 so it should be able to boot on that video adapter but its not. The beep code goes off and the PC just continues to boot and stays as if it has booted into Windows only that I cant see anything. I cannot even access the BIOS.

Sorry for my English but any help to identify whats wrong would be appreciated.

Note - Its highly unlikely its any kind of other hardware failure because I was using the PC fine with the 3470 CPU.

Just upgraded my PC To a Dell Xeon twin quad core . I check in task manager and only see 4 charts under performance and also have checked on the utility CPU-Z and only checks out on on processor with 4 cores. Am I correct in assuming my system/motherboard is not twin quad core? Is there an easier way to check ?

Hello all..

Have a quick ? for you all...

I have installed Windows 7 on my IBM Intellistation machine which has 2 Intel 3.6Ghz Dual Core Xeon Processors. Here's my question...

In Device Mangler, it shows Processors>Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 3.60Ghz x 4. When I check Task Manager, it shows me the utilization of two processors.

Is this correct!? Should TM show 4 boxes instead of two!? Or is Windows 7 seeing everything okay?!

Thanks in advance!

A:Dual Core Xeon 3.6Ghz Processors

Which version of Win7 do you have?

It's not easy to find the information, but apparently you need Professional or Ultimate to use two physical sockets. Home Premium only supports one.

A:Overclocking HP Z440 with a Xeon E5-1650v3 processor

The HP Z440 uses a motherboard designed by HP specifically for the Z440.  It is not a third-party board that is sold elsewhere.  The Z440 BIOS was developed by HP specifically for this system.  HP does not support overclocking, since it could potentially reduce the system's design life goals.

I have a strange problem on a HP z600 with dual Quadcore Xeon @2,93 Ghz with HT, OS is Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

CPU-z can see correctly two cpus with 4 cores but with only 4 threads.

I checked BIOS settings and I enabled HT and multi cpu support, than with CPU-z i can see only 1 processor with 4 cores and 8 threads.....

On msconfig>boot>advanced options>Number of processor the scroll-down show from 1 to 8 as maximum.

Testing with cinebench or frybench only 8 cores are working instead of 16.....

Where is the problem?
