Changing from WEP to WPA

Q: Changing from WEP to WPA

I'm using windows 7 I'm connected to my Verizon router with a Netgear stick. I have it set up for WEP because that was the easiest to figure out. But neighbors are stealing my signal, and slowing me down.
How do I change from WEP to WPA? Simple instructions please Thanks

Preferred Solution: Changing from WEP to WPA

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have both, a device and a wireless access point that supports WPA? WPA2 is what you want for the best protection. Before you can setup WEP/WPA/WPA2, you must have both reciever and transmitter that supports the encryption.
Setup the encryption from within your wireless access point. It could be an independent access point or a combo unit such as a wireless router.
Connect the device that support the encryption of the wireless network.

Okay.. here is one of those stupid simple things I never had to do before and can't figure out how to do it.. I know it's basic.. but .. I self taught so my training skipped around a lot.. sorry!

Basically I did a graph for a yearly set of values, not yet filled in.

My boss wants these charts to show percentages through 100% even blank, but it keeps defaulting to 0.something ranges.

For the life of me I cannot remember how to do this and on my search of the site was harry in trying to figure out a decent search range. Any help is most sincerely appreciated. I have a feeling it wil be a smack my head kind of thing.

Thank you!

I originally made one account with admin rights on my PC in June.

I added a standard account for my dad last week, but the only way I could customize the desktop and theme for him with larger fonts, non-Aero theme, fewer desktop icons, etc was to make his account an admin account also. Otherwise when I tried to open the Control Panel to customize things, I only got error messages saying stuff along the lines of "this page was unable to load". I also had broken shortcut images (generic Windows icons, no arrows) until I made it an admin account.

Now that I've made all the customizations I want to his desktop and theme, will removing admin rights and downgrading his account to a standard one screw up the customizations? Can I switch it back and forth if I wish to make additional changes or customizations in the future?

A:Changing account type - changing GUI and desktop customizations, too?

Okay, I guess I can answer my own question.

Switching an Administrator account to a Standard account does screw up icons in Computer - it makes them vanish, actually - but not those on the Desktop.

These crashes were caused by memory corruption (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!
1-Memtest.

Quote:
*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

RAM - Test with Memtest86+

2-Driver verifier

Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Special Pool", "Force Pending I/O Requests" and "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Changing folder icons to show open or closed and changing default folder icons like "Favorites".

Here we go again.

I have recentely learned how to change a folder icon manually in Windows Explorer, and now would like to be able to manually change the folder so it shows the folder open and shows the folder closed.

I would also like to know how to change default folder like "Favorites" and "Control Panel"

I have w98 (not SE). I'm considering ME and 2000. From the few posts I've read here, it seems to be a consensus that 2000 is much better than ME. Do I understand this correctly?

Will both of these systems run on 64 MB RAM?

What are the major differences between 98, ME and 2000?

If you want to have something that runs go with Win2K. 64 MB would be a minimum ,but I would suggest as much as you can afford.

Hi Dahoe, to BC Changing the default administrator account name may not be such a good idea because some programs may depend on finding that account named as administrator and changing it may disable them. For more information, look here: http://searchwinsystems.techtarget.com/tip...1040230,00.htmlYour best bet would to create a strong password for this account, one with upper and lower case letters, numbers and special symbols.

Hello

I have a problem with a network so if you could help I will be grateful.

I have a network witch has the IP 20.1.1.x, 20.1.2.x, 20.1.3.x. For a few day some of the computers receive another IP (192.168.1.x). We are using here swithches, routers...

Could you tell me what is the problem?

(Sorry for my english)

A:IP changing

Well I can see only 2 ways this would happen. Either your DHCP server is handing out ip addresses in the 192.. range (check in the router settings) or the computers are obtaining ip from another device other than the intended device. Unless the no. of computers is very large, you can also try assigning ip addresses manually in the 20.. range.

Why would you want to change your ip?

Anyway, you are usually leased an ip for a certain amount of time. Some modems you can go into and tell it to release and renew, ipconfig can do this in windows but I have only owned 1 modem that it would let me renew the external that way.

A:Changing out CPU

There's not much you can do with the CPU - which is still quite a capable unit.  There are a couple of faster Q8xx models but they won't do much -- they're just not that much faster.
If the system is still running the OS from a hard drive, replacing that with a solid state drive is the single best upgrade you can make for that system.

A:Changing OS from one HDD to another

That may well be the simplest way without wondering if problems have been created on the new install, you don't need to remove the 500gig drive, just take the power and data leads out of it, install afresh to the new drive, when your install is finished plug your 500gig back in, then transfer the data you want to keep to the new drive then format it, then you can replace all your data and use it for storage which is what you want it for, formating it will stop it fighting for control.

Are you saying that you want install XP in addition to Win7 - if yes, you have to buy a license. But before you do, make sure you find ALL XP drivers for your system - that is not obvious if it is a recent system.

You could also try XP compatibility mode, but that does not work on Home editions of Win7.

There shouldn't be as the drivers will be on the sony site...

You might want to double check that the drivers are on there before you re-install windows.

One problem that you might encounter is that your HDD might not be detected, then you just have to disable the SATA Native Drive through the BIOS.

Press F2 on Boot up screen, go to boot options and see if there is a SATA Native Mode, if there is, uncheck the radio button, if not, you will be fine for re-install.

Hello! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. In order to see what's going on with your computer I may ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) and save it to your desktop.Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Hi,
Questions of mine relate to a situation where the PC's HHD has been viped and the previous OS ie. was Vista with a COA supplied, can I install a new OS, ie. Win 7 full version or of its OEM version will suffice?
Will I be limited to 32bit or 64bit by the previous OS?
Thank you
barsim

A:Changing OS!

You won't be limited because the hard drive has been formatted and therefore will appear to be completely empty to Windows (that is, from Windows' perspective). Therefore, you can install whatever you want.

I just bought a new SSD Ocz Agility 3

I am currently using a Corsair force and what i want to know is what would be the best way to do this ?

I want to completly erase the 80 gb so i can use it for another system my issue is

If i just take the 80 gb out and put the other one in and continue to install windows will my bios settings be the same or will i have to re do the whole thing

Also would it be easier just to install the drive delete the 80 gb partition then shoot the OS on the new drive ?

Would that keep my bios in tact also would that keep the overclock profiles i have set in the bios? few questions before i get started

All info apreciated

A:Changing SSD's

BIOS is not written to the hard drive, so it is not impacted in any way when you remove a drive.

I purchased a new HP pc with Win XP Home loaded on it. I have had conflicts with some of the software that I have installed from my older pc (printer and some applications). This weekend I experienced another problem after installing a transcription application. Get lengthy error message. My question is: How feasible is it to install Win 98, which everything worked on, and remove XP?

Thanks for any recommendations anyone has to offer.

A:Changing XP to Win 98

You may have problems with some of the new hardware working with Windows 98. You'll have to search HP's web site for Windows 98 drivers and likely install them manually once you install Windows 98. Is it possible to get upgrades or updates for the software that isn't working under Windows XP?

I have Build 7100 for 32 bit installed. I have upgraded my processor to 64 bit. I downloaded the 64 bit RC, but when I try to install directly I get the error message "this is not 32 operation." I burned the file as a bootable disc, using Power ISO, but nothing happens when I boot.

Any recommendations on how to get the OS running as a 64 would be great.

Thanks

A:Changing from 32 to 64

When you download the 64-bit RC, you should have gotten an ISO file. Burn that ISO file directly to a DVD - that will create your bootable disk for you. No need to use anything like Power ISO - the Win7 burn utility will do nicely. All you have to do is right-click on the ISO file. The first option is to burn the file (assuming you don't have other disk burning utilities installed - then all bets are off ). BAM! Done!

how do i assign an irq to an add-in pci graphics card and disable the onboard graphics?

A:changing IRQ's

In general to disable onboard video go into BIOS (setup) and usually in the onboard devices section you can disable it. It might also be necessary to make PCI your video choice. Some systems (like certain Dells) require a different method. An IRQ will be assigned automatically to the card, unless you have a system from the Dark Ages.

You can either change it from within Windows' (assuming you're using it) Device Manager, or your BIOS. Consult your documentation for instructions to do it from your BIOS.

I have a used computer. It has the name of previous owner on the log in box plus password. (i know the password). I want to change the name to my name.
When I go under "user accounts," the log-in name I want to change isn't there. This name is also on all the administrator related "stuff" and so is all throughout the computer.
However. I don't have to see that "part" of the computer unless I am in those areas of the computer. Is there a way to change this name without screwing up original configurations, since everything is under previous owner's name? Is that an automatic thing or something? Hope that makes since.

I can set the DNS to "obtain DNS server address automaticallly" and I will be able to connect for a few minutes, then it will automatically switch back to the 127.0.0.1 DNS. I realise that it is most likely a virus, but I have already tried using Norton 360, and MalwareBytes to remove the virus and have run 4 scans on MalwareBytes. It found over 600 things wrong with my computer the first time and removed all of them, yet no change. The other scans detected nothing. I have no idea how to remove this and fix the solution.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thank you.

Good Morning--least it still is in Maryland,
I need information or software or direction to change IFO, BUP, VOB files (on in the same folder) into a format that I can edit (like in windows media player). I have done my "free" research with the attempt that one of those programs may convert the IFO, BUP or VOB files into something I can edit but with no luck. If anyone has solutions that are free, buy or can send, I would greatly appreciate any help since I am not a video guru like I know many of you out there are.
Thank you in advance for your insight,

Hi,
I am trying to change my MTU value, after changing in cmd(admin) it says "Ok" but when I reboot, the value switches back to the default value(1500), could someone help me change it to the value(1492) I have set in my router please. Thanks.

A:Changing MTU value.

I was under the assumption that the MTU was strictly a router setting. Is this not so? If not, where in the OS would it be located?

Is there any way to change IRQs with Windows XP when the computer is set up as an ACPI computer? I want to use an old DOS program with my PCI modem but the modem IRQ is 21 and my old DOS program needs an IRQ lower than 10.

A:Changing IRQ

Hi crdave!

ACPI typically handles the IRQ settings to resolve any IRQ conflicts and it is not recommended to disable it. I don't have any experience with this, and I'm sure it depends on your computer's make and model, but I have heard rumors that the ACPI only manages the top two PCI slots and if you move your PCI card to a lower slot, you can manually assign the IRQ. Again, just a rumor - I have no knowledge of this actually working, but it couldn't hurt to try!

Microsoft has an article on how to change the hardware abstraction layer when installing Windows 2000, and I can guess that this will work with XP as well, though it may require a reinstall of the OS. Here's the link in case you want to try this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;216251

when installing a new OS does your files gets deleted?

Depends on how you install. A clean install removes all data from the drive, an upgrade just replaces key operating system files and what not.

I currently have Windows ME but Ive heard 2000 is much better and Im thinking about changing. What I want to know is what is involved with the process. Will I lose settings, folders and so on.
Thanks alot

A:Changing OS's

Settings and programs will have to be reinstalled. Folders would be left alone as long as you use the existing partitions and don't format the system. But as always anything very important I would make a backup of, as the potential is there to damage stuff. I would at the very least, make a backup of your My Documents folder, and of your email and IE favorites.

The best bet would be to go with a new install, leaving the current file system intact and having a dual boot for awhile, At least until you are satisfied that 2000 can meet your needs.

Just make sure that 2000 installs to the /winnt folder instead of the /Windows folder to avoid overwriting the ME install, so at least you could get back into ME if needed.

2000 does a pretty good job of picking up all of the peripherals, but I would make sure that I have modem drivers/Network card drivers handy, just in case it does not find them. This would let you at least get on the net to download any other drivers if it does not pick them up.

As far as better, I find 2000 to be more stable, (last time I loaded ME I had 6 crashes within 4 hours and ME had been crashing badly when I switched to 2000) although sometimes certain things will not run on it. Mainly some older games and occasionally a older piece of hardware. I can't get Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2000 to run on my system as an example, but I do have Dungeon Seige and Baldur's Gate running fine on it. The old dos game Scorched Earth plays on my system very well, but I had a very hard time getting the Aethra Chronicles to run (another old Dos game).

Keep in mind that 2000 does not have a system restore nor does it automatically make a backup of the registry on bootup. These were not added into the NT line of Windows until XP. There is the GoBack utility that can be purchased from Roxio for about $30.00 that will do this for 2000.

Hey.

A:changing HDD or SSD!

Hello Khalka,

You could use a disk imaging application (paid or free, there are many to choose from) to make an exact copy of your current installation and restore it to your new HDD or SSD. Then you could delete whatever files you want from the new disk. I don't know of a way to copy over just the operating system, but hopefully another forum member will have a better answer for you.

Actually it is a MPG with a little extra for the DVD, you can in some cases just rename with the extension .mpg ....

There's a better tool that will even allow you to rip specific chapters but I can't mention the name of that one here.

I recently purchased 3 Gateway laptops to send to relatives overseas. These laptops have the Windows 8 OS (which I know very little about). I wanted to prepare the laptops ahead of time by installing some software and removing some "bloatware" so that all they would have to do is open them up and begin using them. When I initially powered them up, I had to assign names to each one. Not knowing the names of the end-users, I assigned my own name to each one. Now that I have the laptops ready to ship, I wanted to change the names to something generic like "user". I have tried making name changes but it always reverts to the original name. When the PC powers up, my name is on the "start" screen. Where do I go to make these changes?

A:changing from rtf

yes, do you have word on the PC

if not use an open office suite like

Openoffice - https://www.openoffice.org/
or
libra office - https://www.libreoffice.org/

open the file and then save as Word format

Hi all, I've stayed with W98se up till now because I didn't want to lose all the very useful little down-loaded programmes & utilities I've collected over the years and probably couldn't find again.
However MS and many software writers are turning their backs on us now so I will have to switch to XP soon. Now I am aware that I can buy either an upgrade from 98 to XP or a full version but to decide which I need to know the following.

(1) Would an upgrade version incorporate and run all my existing programmes and files and also are there any known problems with this.
(2) Would a full version do the same.
(3) If not is a dual O/S a viable propersition.

Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated thanks .Roy.

A:Changing to XP

(1) Would an upgrade version incorporate and run all my existing programmes and files and also are there any known problems with this.

Yes it would . . it will also carry forward any problems with the system and invariably result in a unstable system. You will have a much more stable and dependable system if you perform a clean install

(2) Would a full version do the same.

No . . You will need to perform a clean installation with a full version.

(3) If not is a dual O/S a viable propersition.

Yes

Prior to upgrading, you should check to be sure your system will handle XP . . XP requires more memory . . 256 Mg is the practical minimum with 512 being the sweet spot. You an download and run the upgrade advisor to check for compatibility

If you want to save your files and settings, you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media. This is a good guide to using the FAST wizard. Just be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus before you re-instate them!

Hi,

I have a friend who has just purchased a new computer. His keyboard is refusing to recognise the '' sign, replacing it with a '$' instead. Somebody has told me that the keyboard has been configured for the US market.

Is there a quick way that it can be converted to operate with the UK default setting.

For what it's worth it is a Dell PC and keyboard.
Thanks
Jampot

A:Changing $ to £

In xp

control panel/regional and language options

languages tab, then details and change keyboard to uk

When my computer sits for a long time it "locks", and upon bumping the mouse or hitting a key, a regualr blue windows window with a username and blank password screen pops up promting me to unlock the computer.

The user name is the name of the previous owner, and I would like to change it. How do I do so? This is not changing an account name, I know how to do that.

Windows XP SP3 Compaq.

btw, would a large 120VAC .32A fan put out a wierd EMP that could mess up my PC? I was thinking of cutting out a space in the case and mounting it in the side to blast the entire motherboard with cool air.

Thank you.

A:Changing username

The easiest would've been to reload windows when you got the pc from the previous owner.

Here's a link you can try http://www.wikihow.com/Change-the-Re...n-a-Windows-PC

And i wouldn't suggest putting in such a strong fan, my pc is next to my fish ank and if the screen is close to the pump it turns purple.

if the internet connection is working go to the above webpage and let HP find your model automatically and it should take you to the page with the correct drivers for this model HP have you tried this already and have come up empty?
