I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:User account type changed from Admin to Guest

Hello Piotr, and welcome to Eight Forums.

If you like, you could try refreshing Windows 8 to see if it will set you up another administrator account. You may need to do so at boot. Be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose first though.

Hope this helps,

Hey all I have spent the weekend trying to figure out how to change my account user changed to back account Main type guest, can't change type back to administrator but with no luck I have been running this laptop as my main machine for a few months now with no problems however I realised I had a problem when I wanted to change some networking settings on Friday when the UAC said I needed admin privileges and wouldn't let Main user account type changed to guest, can't change back me enter a password or click quot Yes quot hence not allowing me to go any further I went to control panel gt User accounts and saw my account type has been changed to Guest Now I have thought long and hard and I have not changed or had any need to change my account type to guest nor has anyone else had access to my laptop so I can only assume this has been done in the last week or so during a Windows update I'll tell you what I did to try to resolve this below First of all I tried to enable the hidden administrator account while in my account by running command prompt as admin and then entering net user Administrator active yes but as I don't have admin privileges I couldn't even open the command prompt so I couldn't get any further After reading around the net and this forum I found this thread and gave it a try After restarting the laptop and booting into safe mode I was expecting to see and Administrator account next to my account at the log in screen however there was only the administrator account to choose from so I clicked it and it went through the first time initialisation of the account and then showed me the start menu I then went to run the command prompt as admin and it worked I entered net user Administrator active yes which worked with no problems I then went to the user accounts in control panel to quot Manage other accounts quot but my usual account was nowhere to be found So I thought I'd restart the laptop and see what happens out of safe mode When it restarted I was still only presented with the admin account so I logged in to disable the hidden by entering net user Administrator active no in the command prompt run as admin and then restarted After restarting again I was expecting to see my account but was still presented with only the admin account but when I clicked on it it said it was disabled and I was completely locked out of windows Luckily I created a restore point so I managed to restore my settings and was back at square one After a bit of testing it seems my main user account is being removed when I enter safe mode but do nothing else I have no idea why entering safe mode is removing my account I am at a bit of a loss as I can't seem to activate admin privileges on my account but if i try to fix it I lose my account completely I did find this thread but I can't find the download link for Hiren's boot cd If anyone has any help fixes or advice I'd really appreciate it as I don't really want to restore my laptop to factory Even if I do restore it to factory will this problem happen again Any help would be absolutely great Cheers Mark

Hi all,
I installed Windows 7 and ended up with a default user (AxeL) with Administrative privileges.

Now I enabled the default Administrator account and lowered the privileges of my user AxeL (see Accounts.png).
If I open the User Profiles Pane in Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings the size of the user account is unknown (see Profiles.png).

If I switch back the user Axel to Administrators everything works and I can see the right size in the User Profiles Pane.

Does anyone have a clue on this?
I've tried also Vista and 8 and they all seems affected.

This is the best way to set it up, the reason a new install is issued Admin account. In five years since Win7 beta I've never seen a reason why not, except for one or two of the most incompetent users imaginable. But who is going to be their Admin for them? Having a separate account just makes your right hand ask your left hand if it can act.

Hi, I have two user accounts used by my wife and myself and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) works fine on both user accounts. Very occasionally our daughters visit and use our pc. They use the Guest account. I just happened to log into the Guest account and got a pop up message saying that Microsoft Security Client User Interface has stopped working. When I closed the message I noticed that the MSE icon was missing from the Notification Area. When I tried to open MSE from the Start Menu I just got the pop up message again and MSE would not open.

I would add that I have no other anti-virus software running on my pc apart from MSE.

I would appreciate any help that anyone could give me

hi people what i want to accomplish is to set an user account type automatically after creating one as you may know when you create an user account the system ask you what account type to apply for that new user the default user and user group or account privilege type choice are Administrator and Limited i want to user account type and group or user privilege create an account that is not too limited but neighter with same privilege as an administrator i went to the Local Users and Groups at the Microsoft Management Console now on MMC and assigned a different Group to each users i desired task accomplished but the problem is that i don t know how many user the computer will have the owner of the computer are primitive human that don t know how to configure the system i neighter want any of them to have administrative right because they have internet access and they still on the experiment process meaning that they re propense to click YES to any message even if those are viruses most of them don t read english the solution i thought was to assign only one user the administrative right so they can install and uninstall software and perform other administrative task as creating more user accounts there is anyway that after creating an user account the system automatically assign the user a specific Groups for example the built-in object Power User or among the choice on user account tool add an new item or modify the existing items or if there is anyway to modify the privilege and right for an built-in object Group the Limited account pertain to the User Group so instead of automatically assign other group the new account inherit the privilage right limitation from the default group any help or comment is welcome thanks nbsp

I deleted the previous user account on a laptop given to me by my friend (Joanne) and changed it to a new name (Serena). This seemed to work and when when I login it is with the new username. However there seems to be contradicting info about user accounts on my pc. The first screenshot shows my current username but the second screenshot is not showing my current usernames and all files appear to have the old username. I keep trying to delete the files associated with the old account but cannot do so. Can anyone help?

Hi guys.

Windows 8 screwed up my old user account so I had to transfer to a new one. Unfortunately that new one was named after my email address for some reason as I logged on as a microsoft account rather than a local one. Hence in my computer its called users/email_000

This is very annoying.

I've read tutorials on this from other versions of windows ie. here : User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name - Windows 7 Forums

However it doesn't work for Windows 8. When I try one of the earliest steps (renaming the user folder itself) I cant do it as its 'open in another program' even though that User is not logged on.

Any workarounds? Ive created another admin local user, to no avail.

Thanks for your help!

A:CHANGING User Account Folder names as well as User Name

Hello Chookyman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The best method to do this is to create a new user account with the name you want, make it an administrator account type or leave as a standard user, sign out, sign in to the new account, then delete the old account.

Hope this helps,

At the first after I upgraded my notebook from windows 8 to windows 10,
I just realize that 1 of my 3 user account is not exist anymore (the Guest account is not there just after I upgrade it into windows 10). As I tried to make the new Guest account and still didnt work (I dont want to follow such a complex email registration required by windows 10 to make a new user account), I thought to delete my secondary user account. However, I just realize that there is a file that I saved in the Desktop under my secondary user account. Is there a way to restore this desktop file that is saved in my deleted user account?

I have opened C:\Users\ but I cant find the folder with the name of my deleted user account.
Can anyone help me?

It's very important yet big file (around 2 GB). Thankss

A:How to restore file in deleted user account (Desktop File)

Hi Blaume, welcome to the Ten Forums.

I am sorry but when you deleted the user account, it's gone, all its files are gone, forever. The only way to get the file back would be to restore a system image made before the account was deleted.

The built-in guest account no longer works in Windows 10. However, you can create a new Guest account by yourself:

I recently deleted a user account, and clicked yes to also delete all associated files...the user was successfully deleted, however, the user's folders/files remain, and cannot be deleted. Is it possible to associate that user's folder with a new user's login? If not, what needs to be done in order to delete the remaining user folder?

A:Deleted user account, but user folder was not deleted.

You will need to be signed on as a user that is part of the administrator account to delete the user account folder.

You can't associate the folder with a new user (well not easily) but you can copy the contents of documents, music etc to a new user.

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.

If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.

Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer

Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

So this is probably the strangest problem I have ever encountered with Windows About two or three months ago I noticed that my user account had suddenly changed into a guest account I get prompted for an administrator password when trying to do any tasks that require administrator privilege It is not a huge hassle as I know the administrator account password Here a change changed it User can into account, I account how back guest is where it becomes very strange When I turn my computer on it automatically logs me into my user account the guest account When I got into the user accounts section of the control panel and try to manage user accounts it shows exactly zero user accounts on my computer Also when I try to change my user account the guest account to an administrator account precisely nothing happens It User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back gets evens stranger When I log out of Windows the only user account I can pick from to log back into Windows is the generic quot Administrator quot account My user account is nowhere to be found When I go to the control panel and try to manage accounts only the administrator account is listed There is an option turn on a generic guest account but nothing related to my original user account is shown Again this is in contrast to when I am logged into my user account the User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back guest account and see exactly zero user accounts listed on the manage accounts screen I feel that I am pretty good at avoiding bad websites and I do have an antivirus program installed not that that will prevent my computer from being infected but I have used it to do full system scans and I have found nothing on my computer every time Additionally I have Windows updates set to be automatically installed so all of the updates have been installed on my version of Windows I tried asking Microsoft support directly all I got was that no user accounts showing up under the manage user accounts tab is a pretty bad sign and that in order to fully diagnose the problem I would need to sign up for the quot Assure Plan quot or whatever it was called which cost for one year Forget that option for now Does anyone know how to resolve this issue How can I switch my original user account from a guest account and then how could I make it an administrator account once I have retrieved it so-to-speak from being a phantom guest account I mean I know the administrator password and all and so I have been able to essentially use my computer as if nothing is wrong But this whole issue seems very very strange and so I want to see what you guys have to say about it I hope these are not the signs of a more serious and potentially major issue Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this

When you refer to the generic Administrator Account do you mean the Account that is hidden in Windows 7? If so did you activate it using this:

A:Guest user account

Hello Ellen,

A guest account is an account for users who don't have a permanent account on your computer or domain. It allows people to use your computer without having access to your personal files. People using the guest account can't install software or hardware, change settings, or create a password.

I have a Windows7 home premium Toshiba laptop (SP 1) that I recently acquired from a used laptop shop. I requested that an administrator user account with a password and a Guest User account be set up so that our kids can use the guest account without downloading anything from the internet.
The problem is that our Administrator account has an internet connection and access, but not so on the Guest. The laptop shop guy is not familiar with how the guest account works (????) so I am on my own, unless someone here can help.
I can connect with our home internet system using the Administrator account then switch user to the guest account and attempt to browse (firefox), but it says my machine is not connected to a server, even though less than a minute earlier on the Administrator account, I was connected.

Can someone give me any direction on this to resolve?

This computer is only available to my family so there won't be any problems if this account were to access that folder.

If I click " ? using the guest account" in the Learn About box, an error message popup appears saying "automation server can't create object"
And if I click on the OK in the error message, a new window opens up with the Address showing the Internet Explorer blue e and the words "about:blank"

I don't think the Guest account can have administrator rights, be an administrator. The actual Administrator account is hidden by default. You need at least one User set with administrative rights, shows as Administrator but others can be Standard users.

You seem have trouble with userinit.exe from C:\Windows\System32 - the file is corrupted or you have wrong value about it in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Two ways: easy & defficult

1.Easy:Boot DVD Vista

Choose language>>repair computer>>system restore

2.Difficult: boot DVD Vista, replace correct userinit.exe in C:\Windows\System32 independly the file exist or not, load hive SOFTWARE from C:\Windows\System32\config as i.e REM_SOFTWARE (see this thread Can't Delete Registry Key from post 17 how edit registry remotly from DVD Vista) and check you have in key HKLM\REM_SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon this value

Dear people of the Tenforums I could use your advice On Saturday I decided to give new Windows Admin from User Guest Account reduced to it picked Home Edition by itself a try Previous version was Windows After a flawless install I have seen that something on my C partition is using a lot of disk space It was Windows old file which I have successfully deleted by using Disk Cleanup But last night I see Windows old has reappeared back which is quite a surprise so I wanted to delete it again But now UAC blocks my every effort because User Account quot doesn't have Administrator User Account reduced from Admin to Guest permission quot The Yes button User Account reduced from Admin to Guest in the UAC is greyed out I can only click No which leaves me where I was The Account is User Account reduced from Admin to Guest reduced to what appears to be Guest Naturally I ended up more or less completely cut off from making any serious alteration to anything I can't delete folders of importance change account status back to Admin nothing I can only use the computer Another issue is that my otherwise empty D partition has files one of them is named quot WindowsImageBackup quot they together take more than G of hard disk space As a Guest it's impossible to open or access them to see what's in them let alone delete them Does anyone know what they are I know that Win is supposed to delete Windows old by itself after days I hope quot WindowsImageBackup quot too but is there any way for me to solve the issue of account status - to return to Admin - and do it by myself alone as soon as possible It all seems like some bug or something it's quite frustrating and I tried to do a Repair Install but as a Guest you're pretty much stuck

A:User Account reduced from Admin to Guest

Hello and welcome to the Forums!

I suggest you try to enable the built in administrator account, log out and then back into the new admin account and then see if you can change your user account back to being an administrator account.

Here are the tutorials you will need to do this:

Administrator account - Enable or Disable in Windows 10

Account Type - Change in Windows 10

Notice that there are several options for doing each change - you may need to try more than one before you find the one that works for you.

Hope this helps!

I have an account problem with Windows XP on my PC. The Windows Welcome page shows both my user account (password protected) and the guest account. When I attempt to login using my user account the PC opens the guest account. The settings for this are as if the PC has just come from the factory and has none of my files in My Docs or Desktop. When I open user accounts in Control Panel it only shows guest account as running. I have tried to do a System Restore but after a selecting a restore point the screen sticks on "gathering information" and won't go any further.
Help please, I have a lot of important inforamtion stored in various memories and also important emails in Outlook Express which I can't access

A:User account opens as guest account

Your user profile has become corrupted. If you have Windows XP Pro (not home) at the login screen, pres CTRL+AL+DEL 3 times fast. This will give you the classic login screen. Here log in as Administrator, leave the Password blank unless you set a password for the admin account. Here go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a new user account with admin rights. Log out of the Administrator account and login as the new user. Browse to C:/Documents and Settings open up your old user profile folder and Copy the My Documents, Favorites, Desktop and Start Menu folders and Paste them into your new profile folder overwriting the empty ones.

I was told to never use the Guest user account as it was not safe to use. I was told that I should open up another standard account without a password.

What have you learned and how good do you feel about the source of this info?

A:Is the Win8 Guest user profile account unsafe to use?

Hello rfharbin, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Actually a standard account has more rights than a guest account, so creating a standard account that's not password protected is a lot more unsecure.

If you want someone to have temporary access to your computer, you can turn on the guest account. People using the guest account can't install software or hardware, change settings, or create a password unlike they could in a standard account.
Guest Account - Turn On or Off - Windows 7 Help Forums
Instead, I would recommend to either create a standard account with a password, or turn off the guest account when it's no longer needed say after your house guest leaves.

Hope this helps some,

I'm new here and I have a windows vista 32 bit service pack 2 operating system.

Just recently I have made horrible mistake when cleaning my computer , that I can't seem to reverse but maybe you could help me *fingers crossed*

In C:\Users\HOME ADMINISTRATOR\AppData I deleted alot of Roaming. Local Low,and Local Files and have emptied it from my recycle bin.

Because I have user account control on, I can't pass that prompt screen when I click allow, I just wait and wait and nothibng happens. I come out of it by prompting windows task manger using ctrl + alt+ delete. This makes it even more difficult since I cannot turn user account control off ,prompt run, or system restore without that prompt.

What are my options? what do you suggest I do? Is there another way to restore my computer sytem wihout losing all my current document files?

Your best bet probably would be do not display any accounts.

But your users would have to memorize login. Or you can write a little note right on the Welcome screen wallpaper by editing it in Paint and changing it.

What could this problem be related to?

Installing a program isn't actually a special thing, it is just copying files to a certain location and setting some things up. As long as an application is not depending on administrative power it can be ran or installed anywhere. So yes a standard user can install applications...if they support installing without admin power. Look at Google Chrome, it requires no administrative power to install or run.

2. standard user CANNOT re-install windows by inserting a windows disc at boot up!!

Impossible. Windows is not running when a computer boots up, thus no user accounts.

A:User account was deleted

I have no idea what would disable your account.

If you did NOT add a password to the Administrator account then there is NONE, just hit the "Enter key" and the account should start up.

I do NOT set a password for any account until I have it set up and running. This includes when setting up a new machine and with ALL of the updates and programs installed and them updated. Then I may set the password, but normally will run it for a few days before I do That.

But when I go to:  \Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\User Accounts\Change Your Account Type\

Depending on how long the account has been deleted, you can try Recuva but I would use the portable version on a USB flash drive. So basically I lent my friend my laptop for a few days I provided him with my password to my account from what I can speculate he had made his own user account under the name quot guest quot When I had already deleted An with user own? merged account has my received the laptop back the quot guest quot user account had already been deleted An already deleted user account has merged with my own? but under some instances the laptop began associating my files with the already deleted quot guest quot user account in other folders it would associate me with my actual user account which is either quot spadu quot or quot sean quot It really bothers me how the account was merged into my account and associating my files with the quot guest quot user account I just want to get rid of this quot guest quot stuff and have it completely back to normal any ideas by the way the guest account has been turned off so that isn't an explanation or a solution I am the only user account on this laptop

I have read the messages that say that if you delete a user account you cannot get the files back... however I have seen some posts elsewhere that say it is possible.

I deleted the user account, then realized that the files were not sent to the recycle bin. I also can see the hidden file, its size, and the name of the file but the warning states it cannot be opened because the path has been changed or altered. I still see that the user has many files, and I do not seem to have gained any disk it still possible to get these back.

I know when police agencies are searching for files on the computer they have software that recovers a lot of there any out there that I can use?

A:Deleted User Account and files HELP

Hello Dionnisus, and welcome to Vista Forums.

When you delete a user account in Vista from the the Control Panel (User Accounts), the C:\User\(user name) folder will still be left behind as a backup in case you need files from it still. If you do not want it, you can safely delete that folder after deleting the account from the Control Panel.

Hope this helps,

I was using Fast User Switching and deleted a user account that was still logged on. It deleted the account, but the "Documents and Settings" folder for that user wasn't deleted. When I try to delete the folder, it says: "Cannot delete NTUSER.DAT: It is being used by another person or program."

Does anybody know how I can delete this folder? The user no longer appears in the User Accounts settings menu, so I'm not sure how to exorcise this "ghost" account.

In trying to streamline my wifes Laptop (Win 7 64bit), I deleted her user account as she didn't like having to login and give herself permission for various actions all the time.
Obviously this was the wrong way to go about it.
However when I went to re-create the account using the same User name, Windows 7 treats it as a different account so she now can't access any of her items including documents, favourites and hundreds of photos.

What can I do to fix this?
If I can't fix it, my arse is toast!!!!!

A:Recovering a Deleted User Account

The thing I would do if you can do it - is log in with another admin account and see if you can get all the files and move them to an external device or another location on the root directory. If you can do that -- move all the files over and recreate the account.

Hope that helps!

My step son somehow deleted the only user account with Administrator rights. I cannot go in and create a new user because I do not have Administrator rights. How do I fix this problem?

A:Deleted Administrative User Account

If you have NOT deleted "The Administrator" account which is hidden, you may be able to login in the "Safe Mode" and then make yourself a new Admin User account.

If NOT, then you are looking at rebuilding the machine and losing ALL that is on it at this time.

I somehow have managed to delete the administrator user account on my wife's computer. There still exists a limited user account. How can I create an administrator account again?

A:Deleted Administrator User Account

Hey Ocra Jones, Welcome to TSF.

I'm not sure it's possible to delete an admin account (if it's the only admin account). XP usually insist's on having atleast one Admin account at all times.

You might be able to create another admin account by booting into safe mode and logging into the hidden admin account and creating another one that way.

I bought a new laptop for my son and deleted his user account on my laptop. I didnt realise his minecraft worlds wouldnt carry over to his new laptop when we downloaded minecraft so he's lost all his worlds. Unfortunately I didnt have file history switched on. Is there any way to either reactivate his user account or retrieve his lost worlds? Thanks in advance.

A:Can i recover a deleted user account?

File History does not store those kind of files. It only stores profile items. The only hope that you have with any kind of recovery tool. Is if you have not used your computer at all, since making the mistake.

Hi, I accidentally deleted the wrong User account (my Main account). Distracted and kicking myself! In Win2000, I can't do a system restore, right? The files are still there in a 'Main' folder in Documents & Settings, but all my settings are gone. When I added back Main as a User account, it created one called Main-Home. This acts like a brand new account. I'm having to start from scratch with every program. Is there a way to get things put back, so computer will recognize it and can access the old settings in Outlook Express, for example?

I know this is going to seem stupid, but my boss decided to blow away the user account on one of our HP t620 Thin Clients  (leaving only the Administrator account) running windows 10. Now, the problem lies in the fact, that I can't recreate the user account, I can't create any accounts actually. I go into other users to create an account, click on add someone else to this pc,it throws up a black window for about .5 seconds, then the cursor turns into a thinking wheel and once I move the mouse, thinking wheel goes away. Is there any way to create a new user without having to reimage the hard drive?   PLease ignore this. I figured it out.

A:Windows 10 user account deleted

loyal-night-lor Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about needing to recreate a User account in Win10 and wanted to help. This is complicated and there is no guarantee it will work, but it MIGHT ... I'm presuming that since the User account was deleted after the machine was configured, then the default password for the HIDDEN Admin account is the same as for the User account that was deleted. So, the procedure would be to login to the Admin account and user the tools there to recreate the User Account. Supposedly, if you login to Win10 in Safe mode, the Admin account is displayed: You login to Safe mode in Win10 following these instructions: Luck

So my computer received some error today upon startup. I ran my Compaq system repair which deleted all my user accounts. I logged into the administrator and found that my files are still in Documents and Settings. So, I created a new account and tried copying all the files from my previous user in Documents and Settings to the new one. Problem is, I get an error that says "Cannot Copy File: "
How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance.

A:Recover a deleted user account

try a live cd, like ubuntu. that should mount your ntfs or fat32 partition(s) and allow you to copy the files you need.

alternatively, if you log in to administrator, without first logging in to your main account you should be able to copy the profile. if you have any errors, you may need to take ownership of the folder and sub folders. let me know if the live cd doesn't work and i'll walk you through it.

Basically I'm creating a Team Fortress 2 batch file that I can use as an admin to view demos in wireframe mode to detect wallhackers,

what i want to be able to do is set up a option where a user can type a file name in, which is then used after they hit enter,

for instance,

I choose the start a team fortress demo in wireframe mode,

I am then given the option to type the demos files name,

This file name is then used in the launch option of team fortress 2 and loads up,

I have included my batch file in a .txt format for you too see what I mean, (the bits I require help on is the bits in < >)

Sorry if this is confusing, I'm just a beginner at creating batch files

I've been given someone else's HP Pavilion Laptop installed with Windows Vista Home Premium. I was unfamiliar with creating new user accounts so I just changed her account name to mine and proceeded to customize things the way I like. However, I notice that her name still appears in the user string which impacts all kinds of things like logging on to play games and having her name still show up. How do I change the user string so that all incidents of the previous user's name cease to exist?

I have a DELL Inspiron 15R touchscreen with WIN 8. First exposure to WIN 8 but I am learning to adjust. I have Administrator and one User Account set up. Every few weeks, the User Account says "password expiring" and I have to change the password. Is there a way to remove this time parameter? Admin account does not seem to require it.

A:Changing passwords in User Account

Hello dmack, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, you could disable or change the time for password expiration. The tutorials below are for Windows 7, but it's the same in Windows 8.

Guys I have done this in the past but cannot recall how and don't want to botch.

I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old.
How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

A:Move/copy-paste User Account data & docs to New User account same sys

Don't even try would be my recommendation.

Make a new Admin account and copy your documents. Set everything else up from scratch.

Most applications will store their stuff in %localappdata% but unless you have some specific app (Windows Live Mail or Outlook or something) tht you must move it would be much better not to try to move things.

If there is something specifically you want to move then ask about that - I've moved the 2 I mention above, for sure someone else has moved something else.

Generally it will be quicker (and cleaner) to start from scratch than trawl though everything hoping to make sure you moved the lot. You'll only end up missing some odd directory and it will not work.

Welcome to the forum,

If the first two options aren't working for you in this tutorial,

User Account Type - Change

then you can try the other three and see if that works.

My user account shows up on desktop except it's not the same name as my original user account As far as I can tell it has the exact same files as be duplicate Desktop, deleted! won't on account User my user account It looks like this It can not be renamed not in this or safe mode nor can it be deleted User account duplicate on Desktop, won't be deleted! in either mode Restore does not make any changes at this point I have deleted all my restore points cause elsewhere it was suggested this could be malware and I had run couple programs trying to get rid of it and then trying to clean my computer but no help This is very annoying because when I delete something in my user account for instance in my download folder it gets deleted but if I click system restore it's back again At least that's how it was before I deleted User account duplicate on Desktop, won't be deleted! all my restore points and I have not tried anything again but have a feeling same thing What do I see when I look into Computer C Users I see a plain looking folder named Roger that's my user account and one that contains the same files as that duplicate quot computer quot one that shows up on desktop This folder has a little lock icon at the bottom User account duplicate on Desktop, won't be deleted! of it I also see Public and finally Updateuser So three folders None have that user account icon on them the little person thing If I go to user accounts and family safety user accounts I see this So I don't know if that's the same as Roger my user account or if that's a different account All this is confusing I never created another account I'm the admin on this computer and Roger account was the only one I was using can you help me I'm out of ideas

A:User account duplicate on Desktop, won't be deleted!

Hello Rogman and welcome to Seven Forums.

Click on "Manage another account" in the window from your last screen print and see what accounts are displayed.
Post a screen print showing what accounts are displayed.

In Explorer (File explorer) double click on the C:\Users folder to open that folder.
Post a screen print showing what folders are in C:\Users.

Did you ever do a rename of your account?
Renaming an account does not change the the User folder name for that account.

In your screen print it looks like you are logged in with the account name "computer", but you say your account is named "Roger".
When you startup Windows, does it display a screen of Users you can select to login with?

If you never created (or renamed to) an account name of "computer", you may need security experts to help with this.
Or, you may want to do a clean re-install of Windows?
