I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

For JPG files above 11mb, the edit controls in WLPG are greyed out. I can only edit files of 10mb or less.

Microsoft says to uncheck read only in the file's Properties but it is not checked.

I'm using Vista (32) on a laptop with dual core processor and plenty of ram.

Any ideas?

A:Windows Live Photo Gallery Can't Edit Large Files

Where is the JPEG located? Is it on a CD/DVD, Flash or SD Card? Or is it located on your C: drive? If it is on a removable media, save it to your C: before attempting to edit it.

I am suffering a bout of duplications in my Windows Photo Gallery under Vista. I am getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruple versions of the original file.
Despite turning off all Autoplay media types to 'No Action', I get random duplicates when I try to enter update pictures from camera or memory chip through a USB port. There is no 'Enter Updates Only' option, and Microsoft says that this is unnecessary as
duplication is prevented. The duplicates however appear with 'copy' in the file name after the image numbering system. My preference is to view the memory contents via 'Computer' - select and open the port, and view, then copy and paste into Photo
Gallery.  Photo Gallery kicks in to view the chip correctly, but often/always (?) promptly uploads uncommanded. It did not used to do this, only in the last year or two.
What do I do, it is driving me crazy ?

A:Photo Gallery vs. Windows Live Photo Gallery?

Hi TheGreatGazoo,

Welcome to the forum.

It really just depends on what features are more useful to you. It seems that Windows Live Photo Gallery will work seamlessly with Live Spaces.

You can compare the features from the two at these links to see which one you like better.

Windows Photo Gallery:

Windows Live Photo Gallery:

The culprit is probably

Ok, seems like I fixed it. Steps:

Installed all the other updates except the offending one sucessfully
Ran sfc/ scannow
Ran the Windows Update fixer tool
Ran the offending update again, it installed successfully without rebooting.

Since Windows Live is an internet connected program, I'm wondering if you're just getting the same error message I get several times a day with Internet Explorer. Lately, IE has been recovering on it's own rather than saying it has to shut down.
I assume you have SP2 installed since that is required.

When I double-click on a .jpg image file nothing happens. When I right-click the photo and select Open With and select Windows Photo Gallery nothing happens. I've restarted Windows and still the problem persists.

The problem seems to have started when I unwittingly tried to view a .gif image by double-clicking it, which didn't do anything (because I didn't realize that Microsoft no longer supports this common format). I then opened Windows Photo Gallery and tried to open it through the program and nothing happened, of course. But since then it won't open my .jpg files in any fashion. Other programs, such as Photoshop and Paint open them just fine, but those programs won't let me thumb through a slideshow of pictures.

Maybe the release of SP1 will fix this?

Any ideas? Thanks!

A:Solved: Windows Photo Gallery (Vista) No Longer Working

Update:

After realizing that Windows Photo Gallery was only not working in this one directory I was trying to view photos in, I did some sleuthing to figure out why. I found the cause by process of elimination (although I have no understanding of it). I took out all the other files in the folder and copied them back in one by one until finally discovering that Windows Photo Gallery wouldn't open photos while this one file was in the folder. It was a normal .html link for Google Maps directions that I had saved a while back; it had no special characters in the name. There were other Google Maps links in there too, but Windows Photo Gallery only took issue with that one file. Wherever that file was, Windows Photo Gallery wouldn't open photos in that directory. I shouldn't think that Windows Photo Gallery should be concerned with links anyway, so this is beyond me. The solution for me was to just delete the directions, which I no longer needed.

I store and view pictures on my computer with "Windows Live Photo Gallery" (WLFG) and do email with "Outlook", which is selected as my email program of choice. In fact, I don't have any other email programs on my machine.

If I select pictures from my files, there is a button on WLFG which says "email". When you press it, a window comes up headed "Preparing files" and you then chose the file size and press "attach", when the file/s are supposedly attached to a new email ready for sending. This is what I gather from the help file. However, the new email is nowhere to be found. I have searched for it in Outlook, and in WLFG, but it seems it has never been created.

Any ideas?

Hi there,

I just recently did a format and reinstall of Vista 64 Ultimate and i've been having a problem with windows photo gallery. If theres a bunch of new pictures on my desktop and i go to click on one it will take around 30secs to load and and when it loads it will just freeze until it loads the others.

I've never had this problem before and it only seems to happen on my desktop. If i view a new image on my other hard drives they load instantly, it just seems to happen on my windows drive.

Anyone know what causes this to happen?.

EDIT: I tried windows live photo gallery and that works fine, but i would like to have the original working as well.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks.

What else do you have on your desktop? Any really large files, or executables?

My computer received a virus, which was caught by Windows Defender. As a result, some files in both my C: and J: (external hard drive) were quarantined / deleted. I got my C: working again via a diagnostic/fix disk, but my J; was no longer registering on my Windows Explorer and every time I tried to reboot it froze up my computer.

Long story short, I have been told J: may be recoverable via a data specialist (in a clean room) at a very high cost ($800-$1200). Not much of value on the drive (from what I recall), but there is about 1 year worth of photos.

I've noticed that my Windows Photo Gallery has the images saved, but only as Read Only and I cannot copy or move them because the file path was to my J: drive. Any idea how I can transfer the photos back to my C: for safe keeping?

Thanks in advance...

A little know feature of Vista is shadow copies. You can recover personal documents etc from an earlier time with an image that is created in restore points.
Download this software and see if it can help

If you are not successful, try recuva, which may prove to be beneficial.

I have a problem with it adding duplicate pictures. I just spent almost an hour deleting one by one all the duplicate pictures it had listed. How can I set it up to where it does not add duplicates. On my other machine that I just upgraded from Me to Xp, it will automatically ask you if you want to accept any or all of duplicate pictures. That is such a great feature. Why would Microsoft leave that off in Vista? Any way can some one please help me with this...it is a pain in the ass to hand delete every duplicate picture....thanks for the help...

Try and go to another imaging program and zoom in and if nothing happens then i think it might be a problem with you windows photo gallery. To fix it, uninstall windows photo gallery and then go to Microsoft's website and install it again.

When I double click on a jpg file in Explore it comes up in Windows Photo Gallery - which is what I want.

But when I double click on a gif file it always opens Windows Photo Gallery in thumbnail view and not even in the directory I'm using.

How can I change it so that it just shows me the gif image I've clicked? There don't seem to be any settings to change - and why does it do one thing for jpg's and another for gifs?

I don't want to change file associations to another application as it's very quick for viewing files full screen and I can then subsequently open them easily in Photoshop or whatever if I need to.

A:Windows photo gallery

Change the .gif file association to Internet Explorer. That's where they should be displayed. It will show the animation.

I'm not sure what you mean by that, can you explain? Are you referring to the size of the pictures when you view them in Windows Photo Viewer? If so, there's a button on the bottom of the viewer to switch between actual size and making the image fit on your screen.

My computer has changed the way it opens pictures in Windows Photo Gallery, and I need help fixing it. Now, when I click on a picture, it opens up Windows Photo Gallery and I have to click on the image to make it open maximized. I would appreciate any help that I can get, I tried doing a search on this forum, but all I come up with is fatal errors.

A:Windows Photo Gallery help

Hello taylorsmommie, my name is Rick and I work with the Windows Outreach Team. I have been looking into your issue and am not quite sure what the trouble is. The first thing I would do is to check and make sure that Windows Photo Gallery is your default image viewer. Start/Control Panel/Default Programs/Set Default Programs/Windows Photo Gallery. Click photo Gallery and set it as your default image viewer. From my experience when you open Photo Gallery and click on an image it opens the image centered in the window and if you have a scroll wheel on your mouse simply scrolling zooms in or out on the image. In addition the size of the image you are opening makes a difference as well. If the image is small and much less than the window than it will open centered, if the image is larger than the window it should open optimized to fit, thus filling the window. Let me know if any of those tips help out, if they don?t I can try something else to help.
Rick, Windows Outreach Team

Hello,
I am using the Ultimate version and for sometime now, I have been without Windows Photo Gallery. I believe it occurred when I installed Windows Photo Gallery Live (mistake?). My problem is not a serious one, but more of an annoyance. I am unable to "Preview" a single photo by using my context menu (right-click). Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can resolve this problem?
Any and all ideas are welcome!

Greetings!

Quick question! How do you import photos into windows photo gallery that are on disk? It won't let you add them if they're already in the Pictures folder. And if import them from outside pictures folder it just includes that outside folder.

The help is hideous for this app! If somebody has a hot idea could you please share it with me??

Thanks in advance!

A:Need a little help with Windows Photo Gallery

I'm sorry but I don't fully understand your problem. From what I'm understanding, you are trying to copy pictures from a cd to your Pictures folder but it will not let you because there are already files in there with the same name? In that case, a prompt will show up and ask if you want to keep the originals, replace the files, or change the name of the new files you are importing. If they are not the same pictures but do have the same name, choose the third option that will let you keep all the files but it will simply change the files' names.

Hope I was of some help.

If you are talking about the photos in the screen saver, have photos selected as the screen saver then click the settings button and you can see: Use pictures and videos from:

and it lets you browse to the folder. Put the photos you want in screen saver in that folder.

I used my USB cable to hook my camera to my computer so I could download pictures (into Windows Photo Gallery), just like I've done a hundred times.

Only this time no windows popped up to allow me to create a folder, etc. If I go to Windows Photo Gallery, on top under "All Pictures" the pictures that were on my camera appear there. But why wasn't I able to create a folder and download these pictures into that specific folder? As I said, I didn't get any pop-up windows at all -- nothing.

Hi Nia. If you sort out a problem, it is a good idea to post how you did this in order to help someone who may be experiencing the same thing. Good on you for sorting it though.

To put an icon on your Start menu, click Start/All Programs, right click on the program you want and click 'Pin to Start Menu'
To put an icon on your Desktop, right click on the program and click on 'Send To' Desktop (create shortcut)'.

You can check in your startup folder. The installer might be in there so everytime you restart your computer it asks for it. Simply delete the file that calls the installer.

First of all Unfortunately you cannot uninstall Windows Photo Gallery because it is Part of Vista and it is very hard to do so and even then you may get errors and Possibly Blue Screens.

And can I ask how is your Mum saving the Pictures has she tried saving them as Bitmap instead of jpeg?

Hope This Helps,

I've opened and closed both programs and turned the computer on and off, but they still don't show up. However, they do remain with the pictures if I'm in windows photo gallery. Can anyone help me get them to show up in both? Thanks.

When I open the Gallery, it used to be that I would see thumbnails with the filenames under each picture, which made for easy finding. Now I have the pictures, but no filenames until I open or hold the mouse over the picture. Can I change this back?
Many thanks.

Good evening all. I was using a sony cybershot camera and first problem arose when import box didnt appear after plugging in camera to usb. I wasnt too worried and got round this by using file-import. I now have a new camera Panasonic DMC fx33 which aslo doesnt bring up import box, added to that once i have imported photos manually if i then close windows photo gallery it will not open again without doing a restart.
Also i have two logins for me and the wife but if i import photos on my login they do not appear in Windows photo gallery on her login. I have gone in to media sharing and ticked box but that seems to apply only to media player. I would be gratefull for any help.
Cheers

Hi. All thumbnails for pics on windows folders have recently disappeared. I have double checked all folder and performance settings and tried repairing Windows photo gallery, deleting thumbnails cache, restoring pc to previous state, changing file associations etc etc. No joy.

When I open the pictures folder, thumbnails appear briefly and then quickly revert to icons. "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is definitely unchecked.

I have successfully installed another picture browser which works fine when I work through it directly, unfortunately I still need thumbnails on the standard windows folders for selecting & uploading pics online, which is an important part of my business.

Anyone any suggestions? I have already tried all the suggestions for similar problems I have found on the forums but nothing so far has made any difference.

Hi - When I upload photos from my camera to Windows PhotoGallery, every photo shows up twice !! I have to manually go through and delete all the duplicates. Any thoughts as to why this might be happening ? I only click once on "Upload".
An associated question is this : Even after I've gone through and deleted all the duplicates, invariably some photos uploaded on a previous date (even months ago) will suddenly be duplicated and some even triplicated. This is frustrating to say the least, and I wish I knew what I was doing wrong.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

A:Problem with Windows Photo Gallery

No way to know if its the camera or Gallery.

However, you could copy the photos from the camera to another part of your hard drive. Use Windows Explorer.

If they don't duplicate then, its Windows Photo Gallery doing it.

If they do duplicate, it has to do with your camera.

When you test things like this, you want to take one part of it out of the process. This helps troubleshoot what is happening.

I was importing photos from my IPAD into windows live photo gallery. I have windows 7 operating system. There were 2 issues that arised. The first one was that the dates on the folder were in the american format, which is very confusing when you work purley off dates. If you click on the actual photo it will give you the australian format of the date, but the folder it is in has the american date format. I hope someone can help me with this issue. The second issue that arised was that when I went to import photos again into windows live photo gallery it reimported a group of photos that had already been imported. So I thought that was strange so I deleted the copies and clicked import all new photos and it did it again. I have 300 photos on the ipad and these 26 photos keep reimporting. I hope someone can help me thank you very much.

Hi there,

I'm having a issue with Windows Live Photo Gallery.
When I boot the program it immediatly comes up with a "Windows Live Photo Gallery Repair has stopped working", shortly afterwards that message dissapears and the program can be used normally.

After I close the program, the message "Windows Live Photo Gallery has stopped working" pops up , and keeps popping up very frequently for about 10-30 minutes after closing the program.

I already tried reinstalling the program completely but to no avail, the same issue repeats itself.

Are there any suggestions how to solve this issue?

Thanks in advance.

A:Windows Live Photo Gallery

gameleon, I am having the same problem as you. I am surprised no one has answered you query. However, yesterday when 'exploring' the photo gallery on Vista, I began to realise that the Photo Gallery, and the 'Live Photo Gallery' are 2 different things. I will be doing a bit more digging here on this forum to see what else I can find out. As far as I can make out both versions can be used by me, but after going into Live Gallery, and looking at a photo, similar messages as to what you received pop up, ' has stopped working' 'do you want to send information for repair'., etc, etc.

Hi!

First .. does anybody use this? I took a peek at it and it looks pretty neat. I'm just hard core, I knew what photos I had and in XP everything went into dated folders.

If you don't use Windows Photo Gallery then what do you recommend?

This question is not Vista related .. but how do you seperate your original photos from the ones that you've done editing to? I've always kept folders within folders but using windows photo gallery things get redundant and it starts to get confusing.

I'll be happy to hear any suggestions and all ideas!

Thx!

All my photos in the Windows Photo Gallery are now "doubling." In other words, each photo appears in the gallery twice. I have thousands of photos and am concerned that with two copies of each, they're consuming way too much memory. I've tried manually deleting the second copy of each photo, but it doubles again. Is there a setting a can change - or how else can I resolve this problem?

A:Windows Photo Gallery- Vista

It sounds like you have multiple thumbnails for each photo.
The images you see in Windows Photo Gallery are thumbnails of the actual
photo. Sometimes the
thumbnail database gets messed up. You can force a rebuild, by deleting or
renaming it.

The C:\Users\[username]\AppData folder is hidden, so you can't see it until
you change your settings to show hidden files. To show hidden files, open
Windows Explorer, click on "Organize", select "Folder & Search Options",
Select "View", check "Show hidden files and folders", OK

Close WPG, then go to
C:\Users\(youraccount)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\

Rename Pictures.pd4 to Pictures.pd4.old, and re-open WPG to see if that
helps.

This fix worked for me. . .
To resolve this isse, I first recommend you to run System File Checker.
This will check for the corrupted Windows system files and replace them with
a fresh copy. Use the following steps to run System File Checker:

1. Click the Start button.
2. In the Search box, type command prompt.
3. In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click
Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password
or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
4. Type the following command and press Enter.

sfc /scannow

OK... I am a paralegal that does social security disability work. All SS files are now electronic. When we need exhibits in a file, SS sends the exhibits to us on a CD. This was fine when I used a computer with XP, as when I launched the CD, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer automatically came up adn I could view the documents I wanted to see. I now have a new computer with Vista Home Premium and can't seem to open the docs on the CDs.

I did a little research and it appears that Vista Home Premium is supposed to have Windows Photo Gallery Viewer on it, replacing Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. However, I do not find it on my computer.
