Windows 8 Upgrade & Missing Files

Q: Windows 8 Upgrade & Missing Files

It has been a long time since I have been on these forums, but I would really appreciate some help.

My parents 5 year old HP Touchsmart was struggling with Vista so I had the great idea to upgrade them to Windows 8. Well, this has turned out to be a really big ordeal.

First, I selected the option to keep all personal files and such, and when Windows 8 was usable, only the most recent year or so of photos from their digital camera was available, many, many pictures are missing. I tried the Windows.Old folder, did a general search, tried unhiding the files, tried using Recova, to no avail. Any ideas in this regard?

I am accessing the harddrive through an external harddrive case due to the computer immediately getting a virus upon being upgraded to 8 (was it dormant in Vista and then it ran on 8 ??) and the computer crashed completely.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My first guess would be that the photos that are missing were not in the users documents, pictures folder
I cannot understand how, with respect, you did not take the precaution of backing up the personal data first

As regards the

Some dll files are missing in my Windows 7.

Will this compromise Windows 10 installation?

Will the installation of windows 10 eliminate the problem of missing dll?

Bonjour and thanks for your help.

I just upgraded to Vista Business from XP Professional as Vista Missing - Upgrade Files a step to eventually getting to more current OS without having to reinstall everything etc All went well until I tried to go to iTunes and it reinstalled and said there was no library So where did my songs go Well I tried to restore from my back-up drive and it said they were already there I searched all the directories and couldn t find them but to make a long story shorter I found two directories Vista Upgrade - Missing Files named INPLACE TR and WINDOWS Q which are full of quot stuff quot from the Documents and Settings Program Files and Windows directories I assume that since Vista seems to be working correctly I don t need to deal with what is in these WINDOWS subdirectories and possibly the Program Files directories but how do I restore all my data from the Documents and Settings directories Do I just copy everything from these directories to the ones in the quot normal quot place Also I notice that some of the subdirectories in the quot normal quot place seem to be shortcuts that don t work And finally I initially could not access many directories and had to change Ownership in order to do so So first how do I get all my files back - is it as easy as I outlined above Second why did this happen when the upgrade should have preserved all settings etc Thanks in advance for any assistance Gary nbsp

2 days ago, I woke up and my computer seem to simply "upgraded" itself from vista home basic to vista home premium (the menus were different and there were gadgets on the side bar). I figured that this is some sort of an update and went on my business - including transferring my important documents folders which were originally on my desktop, to my "new upgraded" desktop. Two days later, vista home basic returns and the files are no where to be found! When trying the search option, it only indicates a shortcut and says that it has been moved. I also tried system restore but it was no use.

I would really really appreciate any help!!!

SluRpiii Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! First of all, you report using Win10, but since this PC did not come with Win10 preinstalled, there is no way to get recovery media for that OS for this PC. Second, this PC came with various OSs preinstalled, the most recent being Win8.1 -- and unfortunately, HP does not provide Win10 drivers for this PC.  So, if you install Win10, you will have to struggle with installing Win8.1 drivers in compatibility mode, and while that MIGHT work, there is no guarantee, and if any driver upgrades fail, you will be left with a PC with some functions not working. If this PC came with Win8 of Win8.1 preinstalled, the product key is embedded into the UEFI firmware of the motherboard and restoring it using HP Recovery Media will automatically reuse that key.  Problem is, that HP does not appear to stock the recovery media for this PC anymore. You can try contacting HP Customer Support directly, using the links below, to see if you can order if from them:If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page:, HP Customer Support is generally not available on the weekends, so you might have to wait until Monday to contact them.--------------------------------------- If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you should check are:  and Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

It looks to me like that model comes with either Atheros or intel bluetooth.
Atheros drivers are

It looks like you tried intel and it didn't match the device, so you probably have atheros bluetooth

Hi everyone

I ran into something today I never seen before. I setup and sold a computer that I upgraded from vista to windows 7 by running upgrade option inside vista home premium to 7 home premium. Everything was working fine for 6 months. The customer brought it in my shop today and said the power went out and when they booted it back up it said winload.exe was missing or corrupt. I looked over the hard drive and everything on it is windows vista files and none of the user files are there and nothing that looks as 7 was ever installed. It's like it totally erased the windows 7 upgrade. Am I screwed and are the files lost?

Most probably you did not removed the OEM version in the computer.
So it was re-install to OEM version.

Just use the original Windows 7 to re-install.

You would see it listed as a Network Controller along with all the other devices in the device manager. It would have a little yellow ! mark on the lower right of the Network Controller. It will not be under the network adapters section of the device manager. Did you just try installing the driver for it anyway?

Okay so here's the deal. Before when I still have the RC version of Windows 7 there wasn't any problems, but as soon as I upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium some of my drivers went missing. Windows Update managed to fix those except one, the Coprocessor wasn't able to be installed. I'm not sure but I've been having occasional choppy or laggy video when I'm watching movies or playing games.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help me out.

Upgraded from Vista to Windows Home Had a bunch of icons in the taskbar in Vista and now they're not showing up in the taskbar of windows Also I used to be able to drag the icon next to the url in IE and drag it down to make a shortcut in my taskbar But in Windows that same url when dragging down to pin to the taskbar Windows does not let me I see quot pin to taskbar quot but I can't click on it it's weird What else is weird is when I upgrade Pinned 7 icons missing to after Windows do drag that url shortcut and try to click pin I see a pop-up dialog to the left way to the left by the start menu next to the google box that shows a list of pinned icons and that icon IS showing in that list But it's NOT in my taskbar so wtf Did the upgrade f up my taskbar that had icons from Vista prior It shows they're there in that pop-up seems like the pop-up is misaligned and out of place broken Pinned icons missing after upgrade to Windows 7 but I see none Pinned icons missing after upgrade to Windows 7 of them in my taskbar I can drag other icons to the taskbar

A:Pinned icons missing after upgrade to Windows 7

The method used for pinning items to the taskbar is to right click them when they're opened. Then, once you've pinned a program to the taskbar you can right click it to see subsets of recent items that you can also pin to that item. I

In other words, files are pinned to the context menu of whatever APP opens them.

In the picture below you can see that I have three items pinned to the explorer program and the explorer program pinned to the taskbar.

When you drag down a url, it will still pin the item, but it will pin it to the context menu of the program that opens it.

If you want to see a normal right click menu for the pinned program, simply Shift+Right Click

Welcome to TSF....

One thing I really hope you have all of the important data backed up, and also that you have the recovery software for this computer. The instructions below are important especially the part of backing up the important data.

You might have to remove the hard drive from this computer and install it in another computer as a slave drive and after it is able to be accessed by Windows on that computer you will have to manually backup all of your important data that you have to another media like CD-R's, DVD or external hard drive. Then when this is done return it to the original computer as a master drive on the primary IDE cable. and do the following:

REGISTRY WARNING: The details that follow require an above-average understanding of the technical topics involved. If you do not understand the Registry material presented here, either find a technically knowledgeable friend or do not attempt to repair your system Registry yourself. Improper changes in the System Registry can render all data on your hard disk inaccessible.
I hope you have the Windows software for this machine. Please give this a try and print it out for reference

A:Windows 7 upgrade to 10 error. troubleshooter claims SP1 is missing.

I kept getting a failure of the update for the Windows 10 files, error 80240020, which didn't get a page on the Microsoft web site when I clicked the links on the Windows Update pop-ups. As the pop-ups suggested, I did a web search on the error and turned this up on reddit:

The short story is that the pre-existing files in the update folder were corrupted in some way, and to delete them all, including subfolders, and call a utility to re-download all 3+ GB of them. The folder is
and the utility call is
"wuauclt.exe /updatenow"

Note that Windows 10 is very different from Windows 7 (it's far more like Windows 8.1 with an improved user interface), and that there are gotchas. I'm looking for a topic to post that information if it isn't up already.

If there are no win 7 drivers available you can instaall older drivers in compatibility mode. To do that:

That driver is not foxconn.
It is also likely that you need to install CHIPSET drivers before PCI or PCI-E devices are "seen". Note that WT64 is WINDOWS 10

Hi. I'm running XP Pro on my computer and it won't boot up. Its missing the
files ntoskrnl.exe and shell32.dll. I know that to replace these files I have
to go to repair console and copy them from the cache. Only, I cann't seem to
copy them correctly. If somebody could help me by telling me how to copy
these files, plz do because I really need to get back on my computer. I am smart with computers, but with this problem I have no clue, so try to walk me through it as best as you can.

My daughters computer began automatically restarting itself over and over - never getting windows started.I was able to get the computer operating again - but only for one day. Then I received the message:
"unable to find any AIC-78xx/AIC-75xx AISPI8dos.sys"

Now, when we turn it on it states:
"file pciide.sys caused an unexpected error (4128) at line 5882 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\setup.c"

What kind of virus or worm caused it and can I restore Windows ? If so, what should I do to protect the system? She uses it for school - but also does a lot of AIM instant messaging and spends time on - is there daily maintenance that should be done to keep the computer clear and running fast ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated - Thanks!

I intermittantly get a failed boot and a suggestion to run startup repair, yet when I choose 'start windows normally' everything runs fine (WIN 7 64 bit Home Premium) ran a repair yesterday and subsequently ran sfc/scannow which came up with the message that some files were missing and could not be automatically repaired.
Can anyone make sense of this CBS log and reccomend a course of action?
Thanks in advance.

A:Missing Windows files

Your SFC result is clean, the only 2 corruptions listed are false warnings due to KB3022345 and KB3068708. You can disregard or uninstall the two (if they are installed). Then hide when re-offered.

Hi! I have had Windows XP for a couple of years now and never had any issues with it until now. All of my help files are missing. I can find helpcntr.exe, but it won't load. When I try to access help files in any of my programs it cause an error and shuts down. My Internet explorer keeps crashing. Several of my programs (like WinMX won't open.) Also, I can't open the out of the box experience window that I need to install my much needed updates like sp1 and sp1. XP came loaded on my machine and I can't find any of my disks. Please help.

My father inlaw has some issues with his PC. After adding a new email account (their ISP shut down their e-mail) - and transferring the files to the new windows account, suddenly all his files has disappeared. It's like there has been a reinstall of the system.

However - the C: drive has 100 gb of data on it, but when i add all the folders (including the hidden ones), i count only approx. 40 gbs accounted for - where the windows folder uses 36 of these - which i think is a lot.

The cmd tree command shows me a LOT of files and paths that doesn't "exist" in windows explorer.

chkdsk and chkdsk/f has been tried to no avail.

Does any of you have any idea of recovering the files?

hey i have an hp pavilion zv6000 and recently i have lost the ability to:
1) drag and drop icons anywhere
2) copy and paste anything anywhere
3) unmute my computer.
4) use the function help key
5) add or remove programs outside of safe mode
6) use windows media player. says its low on memory (ram, its referring to)

all but number five are all a problem in safe mode. which leads me to believe that its not a virus that is causing one through four and six but instead just missing some system files. id like to know what files im missing or any other kind of hint as to what kind of problem im having.

thanks again guys.

I recently purchased a logiteck Quick cam pro 5000 web cam. Installation went ok until I was asked to connect the cam when I received an on screen message, "The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later".

I actually run Windows XP with SP2 both fully updated plus newest DirectX.

Logitech support talked me through various processes & checks and eventually concluded that my system was missing 2 essential files. (1) USB.INF (2) WDMA_USB.INF

Can anybody advise on where/if I can download these files?
I do not have a WindowXP master disk as windows was pre installed on purchase.

It is possible that the when I removed my previous cam from the system that it took the files with it as I am not able to re install that cam either.

Thank you.

Hello Everyone,

For the past month i was experiencing wireless connection problems on my laptop. Upon trying to diagnose and fix the issue i realized that there were several files missing on my laptop however the only one i can remember is the msiexec.exe. I tried restoring my laptop to a previous point several times but was unsuccessful. However, as a result for some reason now i can no longer log into the internet. My wireless connection icon on the tray has disapeared and when i double click on the Internet Explorer icon nothing happens. I ran a malwarebytes scan which yielded 5 trojans. I also ran Avast Virus scan which yielded two viruses.

Can anyone assist fix my laptop?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

A:Missing Windows XP Files...?

I tried repairing the windows XP files using the windows XP cd repair option. However upon completion of the repair the laptop boots up but doesn't make it to the desktop. Instead it just keeps restarting. Right before its suppose to get to the desktop, it restarts itself again. This is so frustrating.

So, I have a 2012 Dell Inspiron laptop that is running Windows 7 SP 1.

I wanted to try and upgrade it to Windows 10 so I could test it out (before doing so on my desktop, since this laptop is one I keep around for "experiments"). Problem is, despite the fact that the Windows 10 upgrade agent seems to have downloaded via Windows Update (the files are there in the GWX folder in System32), I cannot upgrade.

There's no icon in the taskbar, various "fixes" I've tried to get the icon to show up haven't shown up. Running the upgrade files with Command Prompt hasn't worked either.

So what's going on? I hadn't actually turned on the laptop since April until now. Did I wait too long to download the upgrade agent?

A:Solved: All Windows Files Missing Except Mail Windows Folder

You need to do a repair install with your copy of xp heres how:

One of the best kept secrets of Windows XP is it's built in repair feature!

In previous versions of Windows, correcting an operating system error, or installing a new motherboard, usually meant formating and reinstalling, resulting in loss of all data. Don't worry; Windows XP repair feature won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system!

Note: The system repair function will remove any updates you have previously installed that are not included on the CD. Drivers will also be reverted to their original XP versions, as well as some settings (network & performance settings may sometimes be reset to their defaults). It may be necessary to reactivate your Windows XP as well. When finished, you will have to download all of the updates from Microsoft Windows Update, because they are all replaced during repair.

Why would I want to reinstall Windows XP?
1) Can't start Windows XP in safe mode.
2) You have problems caused by a recently installed system update (Windows Update, hotfix, Windows XP service pack, or Microsoft Internet Explorer update).
3) Your problems can't be solved with system restore, or you can't access system restore.
4) You've installed a new motherboard, or made other major hardware changes and need to reinstall Windows.

Let's get started!

Step 1: Rule out hardware issues. Windows Repair will only fix software problems. Hardware issues can also cause boot problems (i.e. bad hard drive, memory, CPU, or power supply).

Step 2: Backup. It's always a good idea to backup your important data before making changes to Windows XP. Relax, if you follow these instructions your data will be perfectly safe.

Step 3: Boot from your Windows XP CD. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer. When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD. Can't boot from your CD? Please see the note at the bottom of this page (Configuring Your Computer to Boot from CD).

Step 4: A blue screen will appear and begin loading Windows XP Setup from the CD.

Note: RAID/SCSI/Unsupported UDMA users:
You will be prompted to "press F6 to install any third party SCSI or RAID drivers". Most users will not have to press F6, but if you are running RAID, SCSI or unsupported UDMA controllers, then you will have to have your controller drivers on a floppy disk. If you are unsure whether you have RAID/SCSI, then simply let the CD load without pressing F6.

When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.

When presented with the screen below. press the F8 key to continue.

Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.

Note: If you install a fresh copy, all data on that partition will be lost!

Your almost finished! Windows XP will appear to be installing itself for the first time, but it will retain all of your data and settings. Just follow the prompts, and have your CD-KEY ready if needed.

Do you have more than one system, or lost your CD-KEY? Visit the keyfinder page to retrieve your CD-KEY.

I had some problems with trojans on my computer (WIN XP), which are now gone, thanks to this board. However, I now have other problems, which seem to have happened since I updated windows. I have some totally blank windows, and much of my control panel doesn't seem to be functioning right. I cannot access user accounts...blank window. I cannot search for search options or ability to search for anything. Help and support button is nonfunctional. System restore doesn't work, etc. I had my HJT log given the "all clear" yesterday down in the security area after deleting a few files, but that hasn't helped with this problem. I've also tried the Start/Run/sfc /scannow with no improvement. I hope someone can help!!

1) Try the install using a standard CD-ROM, not a DVD or CDRW drive.

2) Make sure you have the latest BIOS updates.

3) Run some memory test using Memtest86 (Google for it)

Hello wonderful smart computer geniuses!!!!

I had to revert my hard drive to original factory settings last night. When I tried to fax a business associate today, some of my fax files are missing to enable XP fax options. I searched the "i386" folder as well as all other search methods and seem to be missing the "fxcfgwz.dll" file as well as others.

Windows is asking me to insert the windows XP disc in drive E but my computer came from the factory with XP alread installed so I do not have a disc.

Can someone PLEASE email me the fax files from a disc so that I can work today??? I am so desparate and computer technology illiterate. I have no idea what to do. I would be sooooo greatful if someone can help me.

Any program that I click on tells me that the .exe file is missing and asks me what program I want to open this file with. I cannot even open the command prompt. However, if I open a file associated with a specific program, then the program starts right up. I cannot run virus scans (even the free ones on the internet).

I did run a scan from Windows Live Onecare a couple days ago and resolved some issues. I also did a system restore. Since then, I have had this issue with the .exe files. I cannot even get back into system restore.

Anyone that can help is much appreciated

Hey guys I have a problem. I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64x over my last copy of the same OS using the same disk, as Ive done in this manner twice before with complete success. This time however, when I go to my windows.old >> users file my old user account isnt there, while the public account is. I checked my disk usage and the whopping 129gb chunk of information that was my user account still exists somewhere, taking up space in a place I cant see. Furthurmore, I unticked the 'read only' box in the file properties of the whole windows.old file and while watching the names of all the affected subfolder and files whip by I caught glances of windows.old/user/xxxxx/music, pictures etc. So theyre obviously still there, just in a much less digitally tangible way. Soo... any ideas as to how I can possibly retrieve these files?

My HP laptop had Windows Vista and initially it was having blue screen error messages so I did a hard disk and memory test from the BIOS and also System Restore to no avail.

Now I'm having trouble installing Windows 7 into my HP laptop. It's stuck in "Expanding Windows Files" right next to "Copying Windows Files"

It says, "Cannot copy Windows files. It might be missing or corrupt." with error code 0xC..... something like that.

I have already wiped out the disk by deleting the old partitions and created new ones 'coz I chose custom installation.

What am I supposed to do? Please help. . .

Thank you...

Wipe the HDD with KillDisk and try Windows 7 installation again.

A:missing dll files after windows repair

Did you uninstall IE7 before doing the XP Repair install? If not, you need to uninstall it, then re-install, as a repair leaves you with pieces of both IE6 and IE7.

How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7

I'd also try uninstalling .Net framework from Add/Remove programs, then re-install. Uninstall the latest one first, 4.0, 3.5, 3.0, then 2.0, then re-install.
You can download the differnt versions from here:
.Net Framework Development Center

As a last resort, you can use the .Net cleanup tool

I'd download and install SP3 before re-installing IE or the .net framework components.

You want to be able to boot into XP from both drives (RAID array and the old XP drive)? The RAID array is considered as 1 drive unless you partition it. Why don't you recover any important data off the old drive and remove it completely from the SSD system. The old drive will only slow things down

Hi TemplarLord,

If you have a Windows 7 Installation DVD, you can follow these steps:Boot up into the DVD.
Under the "Install Now" option, click "Repair My Computer".
Open up the Command Prompt
Run the commands you were running in Windows, and the files should be restored.

A:Missing registry XP.

I "presume" PC Max is a registry cleaner.

These apps are notorious for finding stray items in the registry and reporting them as errors.

In reality, there are constantly items left lying around in the registry as a result of installs/uninstalls. And, there are legitimate ones that are there for future use.

Hence, normal and nothing to worry about. 99.999999% of the time they will cause no issues.

A:Reason why Files are missing in windows 7?

Hello -Was this the method you used, and did you follow the full instructions during removal ?? If the infected computer is connected to LAN, disconnect it and re-connect only after all other computers have been checked and cleaned.Download the executable file rmzbot.exeThen run the tool for removal of infected files. The tool will automatically scan all available discs and will try to heal the infected files. If an active virus is found in memory, the tool will ask the user to reboot the computer. Healing will be performed during operating system boot-up sequence, so any active virus cannot interfere with the healing process.Update your AVG after restart and run a complete scan You should have done that Reboot only during the time that you were Off Line "so any active virus cannot interfere with the healing process."  Thank You -

Back your data files up off computer. You could try uninstalling the updates. You also could try a system restore and, then, sfc /scannow (may need to run multiple times--say 3). No luck with these? Then, a refresh may be in order.

Refresh Your PC in Win8?Attempts to solve system problems by replacing system files without affecting user data files. Such files still should be backed up. Installed programs will have to be reinstalled except those from the Windows Store. A list of uninstalled programs is provided on desktop. Your personalization settings will be maintained. System settings will be set to defaults. A Windows.old folder will be created at C:. You can delete it once you have everything you want from it--Windows.old Folder - Delete in Windows 8.

A:Missing or corrupt files on Windows XP

The location is the key to resolving this problem.

The path ... windows\system32\config.... is where the Registry resides. It is almost certain that "something" is causing the Registry to corrupt. There are a number of possibilities as to what the "something" could be.

1. A legal program. Some software which is being installed on the machine is badly written and is causing a critical key in the Registry to corrupt. Typical culprits of this type of error are programs that install deep within the OS such as AntiVirus and Firewall software. (e.g. ZoneAlarm has been known to cause this type of error).

2. An illegal program. Perhaps your user is installing something which they should not be installing. Shareware, Freeware or whatever that is creating havoc with the Registry. A sharp wrap on the knuckles should solve the problem

3. Malware. The machine may be infected with a BIOS virus. BIOS malware goes back a long time with one of the first being the infamous Chernobyl virus back in 1998. More recently, John Hesman of NGSS showed that a BIOS Rootkit could be created using PoC code. Therefore, just because you have changed the disk and reinstalled the OS it does not mean that the machine is "clean". If the machine is infected with a BIOS Rootkit then what you need to do is to remove the CMOS battery for at least 24 hours to completely drain the CMOS memory. Any infection within the BIOS will then be removed. At the same time you ALSO need to perform a Factory Format on the hard disk (or install a new one). A normal Format does nothing more than clear the MFT. Your malware will still be on the disk and it will then simply rewrite itself to the CMOS. So you MUST do a Factory Format.

This is an interesting problem so I would be interested to pursue the issue until it was resolved.

A week ago i upgraded my windows from 7 to 8.1 straight away.
Now i noticed when i tried to get some old files back from my windows.old folder, there isn't anything in there!
I know that windows 8.1 has an build in timer which will automaticly remove this folder after 28 days, but thats not the case. All files from my last OS are still at my harddrive, because it tells me the same space is still used.

The main thing i want to retrieve is the Program Files(x86), because there are important modding related files left behind.

I tried several things like uncheck it from read only, change the option in Display settings to display all hidden folders and sub folders, but the program files isn't there!!!!

I need it back so bad!!! Please help!

I just updated my pc from Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I also use IZARC to zip and unzip files and everything worked fine until the windows 7 installation.

The only software downloaded after the Windows 7 update was AVG 2013 and Dual Monitor Tools, which allows me to custom fit wallpapers on my dual monitors
I'm double clicking the zip file and it opens on the bottom and appears in a small view when I hover over it but it does not open to a folder after clicking it.

a few days before the deadline I upgrade my laptop as well as my sisters laptop to windows 10. I haven't noticed anything but my sister noticed today she s missing a whole bunch of folders with files she had created by scanning documents. Doing a web search it seems she is not alone. A number of people have lost personal data files even though the upgrade ends by saying 'your files are exactly where they were'. Someone on here posted that they lost all their mp3's. Another person on the web said she lost all of her family photos for the last 10 years. This is a absolutely unacceptable. How can Microsoft get away with BS like this and not be held accountable. Has anyone found a way to recover lost files? I tried Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery tool but so far it hasn't found anything.

Everything works fine.
My Boot drive is a 180GB SSD, so not a lot of room.
So I would like to remove any old windows 7 stuff that Windows 8 might have backed up on the Boot drive.
Anyway to find the old windows 7 stuff and how could I delete them?

Heard it takes 7 day for the old files to show up in disk cleanup?

I recently upgraded from Vista and wondered if these files can safely be deleted? I did a search for "Files discarded by Windows upgrade" and found they could safely be deleted but couldn't find any info on whether the Upgrade log files could be.

Experienced but first time experiencing this kind of a problem Last Actions before Problem - Automatic windows updates are usually turned off I did quite a few windows updates - I then uninstalled google chrome including registry entries using an uninstaller software - I then put the laptop to sleep - Laptop runs on ac power no battery the plug was unplugged causing the laptop to restart windows - When the laptop came on my desktop was empty including the desktop background all documents pictures music start menu programmes are gone Problem - There is now empty space in my drive and all files are gone they are not hidden either Have tried software like combofix incase it was malware causing the problem but no luck Additional Info Windows after All Update Missing my Mysteriously files are - Running windows repair disc at boot finds the windows installed rather Mysteriously All my files are Missing after Windows Update than windows and the drive letter is D rather than C I wanted to try the 're-install windows files and keep user data' using my laptop's recovery media but that option is inactive Background Info - year ago laptop was upgraded to windows and then downgraded again to windows using windows own upgrade application The question is can it be malware previous win upgrade or sudden ac power loss which caused the problem

A:Mysteriously All my files are Missing after Windows Update

Whenever files are deleted, they are just hidden until overwritten. You can get them back with shadow explorer.
Do not use the computer too much until they are restored. The hidden files will be overwritten when the sector is used.
Give this a try - About
I do not think that it was malware.

I am trying to locate some possible driver or file problems and came across, what maybe an interesting question.

I found that I have a lot of left over files sitting in local disk C:, after I have un-installed an Iomega Zip program,

I decided to delete these and was stopped by a message that some of the files may be used by other programs.

If in the case in such cases deletions like this occur, and files, drivers, etc are missing. . . Does the Windows updating service detect this ?

A:Will Windows Update Detect Missing Files ?

Nope. Windows Updates only provides files created for glitches, bugs, and security updates. I'm afraid it's not as personalized as it would appear to be.It's dangerous to delete files from the root (C:) and Windows directories if you don't know exactly what you're doing. I've got a bookmark for a site that tells you what lots of files do. I'll see if I can find it and get back to you. Generally speaking, unless the files are humongous or seem to be interfering with your OS or other applications, I'd suggest you not spend a lot of time working on deleting them.Heheheh ... I'm beginning to think that you're an overtweaker, like me! At least you have the sense to ask about something before you do it, unlike me.

A:Laptop crashing - various Windows files missing

Welcome to TSG....

With this many crashes and re-installs the just keep on constantly happening I would suggest contacting Toshiba about where they recommend taking the laptop for service.

There is definetly something amiss here that is a physical part of the computer that keeps on taking the installation down and crashing the system. It could be as simple to find as a problem with bad sectors on the hard drive to a bad stick of RAM, but I recommend service by a live human being.

Hi there. Thanks for any help you can give. I have been searching for how to fix my son's computer which comes up with windows system32 config system - Windows could not start b/c the following file is missing or corrupt. He has a Dell and everything I've read seems to give warnings about doing recovery with a Dell. There was no OS CD with it. Anything I could try?

Dell Inspiron 1721; 3 GB RAM; 250 GB HDD; Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 1.9 GHz processor; just upgraded to a clean install of Windows 7. After installing WordSearch Bible 5 Software (which is my favorite, much better than the later versions!), the program won't open. The error message says, "The program can't start because ILI32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

Tried reinstalling and got the same message. Tried locating a copy of the .dll file on the web with no success.

Is there going to be any way to use WordSearch with Windows 7? If not, what a bummer! It's the easiest, most user friendly Bible software I own.

Thanks for any advice forthcoming,

Hi all,
some, actually, a lot of my avi files in Windows Media Player are missing, they have just simply disappeared.

My system is:
Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Windows Media Player Version: 11.0.5721.5145

I ran AVG Full scan & Anti-Rootkit scan but they came up with nothing.
I also ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware flash scan, quick scan & full scan, nothing again.
I also found a site online that said if WMP has missing files then clearing the WMP Database or the WMP Cache may fix the problem. I didn't do these 2 things though cause it didn't say if that would delete the rest of my avi files as well or just fix the problem...
Any help would be much appreciated.

I installed Windows 8 on my laptop over top of my Windows 7 installation. It notified me (like it always does) that all of my personal files will be put in a folder Windows.old (pretty standard).

When I started Windows 8; however, I noticed that most of my installed programs were missing from my C:\Windows.old\Program Files and C:\Windows.old\Program Files (x86) folders.

Even more to my horror, I discovered that my C:\Windows.old\Users\<user>\Pictures and C:\Windows.old\Users\<user>\Documents folders were also empty.

Why would it have always saved my data in the past when installing fresh and not this time? Why is only small parts of my data still there?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Panicking here...
