I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

I had winxp working on this computer months ago. I got a nasty virus and I had to wipe the HD clear. I have tried so many times to reinstall xp pro back on that pc but for some damn reason It keeps crashing.

It crashes when its done the installation and about to load up the desktop for the first time. I get a :

Not enough virtual memory

error and the thing restarts and keeps doing this loop until I cancel the installation. Can anyone help me?

I have asked so many people and it amazes me that noone knows how to get around this.

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

my current setting of virtual memory is 745mb which is the default for 500mb i have.

i have a little program that shows memory and virtual memory, i see while in windows about 256 is beeing used in my memory stick and 256 in virtual.

why is the slow virtual memory working before i ran out of good and fast memory stick?

A:virtual memory, why is it beeing used while i still have free memory?

" XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

Windows 7 is really good about automatically assigning memory for the amount of RAM you have installed on your system!
The less you have, the less it uses & the more you have the more it will "reserve".

So don't worry about it & let the OS take care of it.

I agree at the very least he should have 1Gb installed RAM although 2Gbs would be optimal for the OS.
But if you are bound & determined to tweak the services, follow this guide...it will take some time to do though!
You'll notice most of these services are already tweaked by default in W7U!

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

Why i don't have C:\pagefile.sys on my computer since when formated? If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?

<<If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?>>

Not sure what "it" refers to.

IMO...users should just let XP manage the pagefile size...I have found no advantage from any other arrangement (and I've tried several).

How much RAM is physically installed in this system?

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

I remember from Windows '98 that the Virtual Memory could be manipulated. A change was made and Windows no longer managed the size, but a pre-determined figure of your choice took over. Is that possible, or even necessary, with XP?

I recently tripled the amount of RAM on my Toshiba laptop by adding a one-gig stick. The machine literally flies now, even with a Celeron chip. Maybe I'm being greedy, but can I do more?

A:Virtual Memory

Low on virtual memory is cause by too many programs running, using the all availble RAM & Virtual memory (Virtual memory = RAM copied to the harddrive - 'paging file').

The paging file should be 'roughly' about 2x the size of the available RAM (control panel -> system -> Advanced -> Performance Options...)

Installing more RAM would be the best way to fix this problem.

Another would be to cut down the number of Processes running at the same time - often removing unnecessary Startup entries will help as well - http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml - a simple free applet that lets you disable startup entries.

Do NOT disable entries that you do not know what they are - always research (google) beforehand!

A:Low virtual memory

how much disk space do you have left?
you can try to increce the max. size of the page file (vertual memory) depending on how much disk space you have left. If your disk space is gettiing low try cleaning your system of files you don't need like temp files history logs those kinds of things (a great program for this is ccleaner which can be downloaded for free).
there are other not so easy possable causes but I would try this first.

Could someone help with this message. I run Microsoft XP, have a 37.2 GB hard drive and 20.9 GB of free space. The message I keep getting is :

"Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied."

My filing system is NTFS. Could you please tell me how I can either increase my virtual memory or delete some files that I don't need.

I have tried to delete files from my computer by removing them with the ADD/REMOVE programs and also by going into the registry.

I am at a loss of what to do next. If you could help, I would greatly appreciate it.

That's fine, it's recommended to have a Page File 1.5x the size of your RAM, this should be managed by your System anyway as recommended.

Hope somebody can help....

Something like that at least...

What makes it do that? And is there a way to make it stop doing that?

A:Need Virtual Memory Help

usually when you get a virtual memory error it means you really need more ram. You can do some things on the computer to help fix but it is usually temporary.

The first thing you could do is to check free space on your harddrive. If you have less than 15-20 percent of the drive free, then you should delete temporary files to get space back, move files, or uninstall programs you never use

you can also change your virtual memory size. See the following. Personally I always let the computer manage the size.

Thanks for your input about my enquiry regarding putting 4gb of RAM in my PC.

Here's another question for you!

I understand that it's generally considered good practice to have a Paging File that's 1 and half times that of your RAM. However, if I were to have 4gb of RAM I wonder if I could get away with using much less.
A while back I tweaked my Registry to get Windows to use up the RAM first before resorting to VM - this is the tweak:

HKLM\System\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management - set DisablePagingExecutive = 1 (Forces Windows to use RAM before the Paging File)

I gather that it's not a good idea to set the VM to zero as some Windows tasks will not work but could I get away with a nominal amount of say 100mb??

Any suggestions?
Many thanks

A:Will I need much Virtual Memory?

You're quite right, there is absolutely no need to have 1.5 times you ram if you have a lot of it.

You'll find a thread here where it's discussed if you can drop the paging file entirely or not. It might be old, but the wisdom is still valid

Enjoy

I am using Windows XP, and my computer whenever it feels like it keeps freezing, i.e. mouse dont more keyboard and screen lock and the only way is to push the reboot button. If i was to guess i think its to do with my amount of RAM 256mb, and somthing to do with the virtual memory causing it do just freeze. My first answer to this was to get more RAM, or does it sound like somthing diffrent to you?

I've tried to disable virtual memory in XP (for speed amongst other things) by setting the page file to 0 for all drives in my system.

However, when I check the task manager it reports "VM Size" as at the same level or higher than "Mem Usage" for all process, e.g. firefox.exe Mem Usage 77,720K and VM Size 118,756K. This is a problem as my RAM (1Gb) seems to be filled up quite quickly because of the additional VM Size requirements - since I'm not using Virtual Memory, VM Size should be zero for all processes. Is this what it should do, or have I disabled Virtual Memory incorrectly? Thanks in advance.

I don't get it. I have 640MB of RAM and yet Windows XP still set my Virtual Ram to 959MB (out of a total of 20GB - hard drive). What should the optimum size of the paging file be for this much RAM?

A:Virtual memory in XP

From Microsoft.....

To have Windows choose the best paging file size, click System managed size . The recommended minimum size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system, and 3 times that figure for the maximum size. Example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size would be 384, the maximum size would be 1152.
For best performance, do not set the initial size to less than the minimum recommended size under Total paging file size for all drives . The recommended size is equivalent to 1.5 times the amount of RAM on your system. Usually, you should leave the paging file at its recommended size, although you might increase its size if you routinely use programs that require a lot of memory.
To delete a paging file, set both initial size and maximum size to zero, or click No paging file . Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not disable or delete the paging file.

A:virtual memory

Make sure your drive isn't too full.
In Windows Explorer, right-click the drive icon and choose Properties.
If the amount of free space is under about 10 percent, you'll need to free up some space.
You can use the Disk Cleanup button right next to the free space indicator,
or manually move some files to off-line storage, or uninstall unnecessary applications,
whatever it takes to get more free space.

If low drive space isn't the problem, the virtual-memory settings may need adjusting.
Right-click My Computer and choose Properties.
Click the Advanced tab.
Click the Settings button in the Performance panel.
Click the Advanced tab in the Performance dialog.
Click the Change button in the Virtual memory panel.
Look for the System managed size option,
select it if it isn't already selected, and then click OK, OK, OK.
Reboot.

Windows is pretty good at managing virtual memory for most users.

According to Microsoft, Windows sets the initial minimum size of the paging file at the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer plus 300 megabytes (MB), and the maximum size at 3 times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. Windows 7 handles virtual memory differently and more efficiently than previous version of Windows. So I believe most folks recommend you let Windows 7 decide what's best based on your computer usage.

Hello gean

How much RAM (memory) is installed? You might need more, or you might just have to increase the virtual memory.

The virtual memory should be set at 1.5x RAM installed.

Right click ?My Computer?/Properties/Advanced/Performance/Settings.
Click Advanced Tab.
You will see the size at the bottom.

If you need to increase it click the ?Change? button for Virtual Memory
Make both the minimum and maximum values = 1.5 x RAM installed
Click SET
Then OK your way out.
Reboot

A:Low on Virtual Memory?

'Low Virtual Memory' errors can appear when you don't have enough physical RAM for the programs you're running, so the computer uses the much slower hard drive as temporary virtual RAM. If this setting is too low, it can cause programs to crash with an error message like yours.

Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance Settings button > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory Change button. Click 'Custom size' and enter 4096 in the Initial and Maximum boxes. Click the Set button, then OK to close the windows. Reboot to complete. This will give you a 4GB static swap file.

A:Want to know about Virtual memory!!

Hi kipps !

RAM, Virtual Memory, Pagefile and all that stuff

The "virtual memory is very low" message either means you haven't enough ram and page file space or, most likely, some buggy program is using all your virtual memory.

When you get that message press ctrl+alt+del, click the processes tab, go to view => add columns and tick the virtual memory size box. Give us the name of the process that uses the virtual memory the most.

How much RAM do you have ? What are your page file settings ? To see the latter right-click my computer => properties => advanced => settings under performance => advanced => change.

What's your computer's brand and model ?

I have XP and firefox 3.0.12 for browser. I had a pop-up that said that my memory was on the low side and that firefox was going to increase it. Should I be alarmed about this? How is the best way to increase memory if needed? I increased my memory sometime ago so I'm pretty sure that I have enough memory storage. Thanks for any help you can offer to me.

1. Click on Start
2. Right Click on My Computer
3. Choose Properties

This will bring up the system properties window.

How much memory do you have installed in your system? You can read this at the bottom of the system properties window. 128MB, 256MB, 384MB, 512MB, 768MB, 1024MB or 1GB, 2048MB or 2GB
OR any variants of the above.

Virtual memory will go low for numerous amounts of reasons however the most common reason aside from when you are running highly intense games without enough memory installed to properly run that game is infectious files running in the background of your computer?

If you would like to see if you are infected go here:
http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/

The free version will not remove them for you, however it will provide you with a list of where the infections are. This will not catch every infection.

Read my article to learn more about infections and dangers out there and programs that can help remove those infections:

Welcome to TSF

Run some security scans on the computer. I see this alot when the system is infected.

How much memory is installed on the computer?

Quote:

Problems with Virtual Memory

It may sometimes happen that the system give ?out of memory? messages on trying to load a program, or give a message about Virtual memory space being low. Possible causes of this are:

* The setting for Maximum Size of the page file is too low, or there is not enough disk space free to expand it to that size.

* The page file has become corrupt, possibly at a bad shutdown. In the Virtual Memory settings, set to ?No page file,? then exit System Properties, shut down the machine, and reboot. Delete PAGEFILE.SYS (on each drive, if more than just C:), set the page file up again and reboot to bring it into use.

* The page file has been put on a different drive without leaving a minimal amount on C:.

* There is trouble with third party software. In particular, if the message happens at shutdown, suspect a problem with Symantec?s Norton Live update, for which there is a fix posted here. It is also reported that spurious messages can arise if NAV 2004 is installed. If the problem happens at boot and the machine has an Intel chipset, the message may be caused by an early version (before version 2.1) of Intel?s ?Application Accelerator.? Uninstall this and then get an up-to-date version from Intel?s site.

* Another problem involving Norton Antivirus was recently discovered by MS-MVP Ron Martell. However, it only applies to computers where the pagefile has been manually resized to larger than the default setting of 1.5 times RAM ? a practice we discourage. On such machines, NAV 2004 and Norton Antivirus Corporate 9.0 can cause your computer to revert to the default settings on the next reboot, rather than retain your manually configured settings. (Though this is probably an improvement on memory management, it can be maddening if you don?t know why it is happening.) Symantec has published separate repair instructions for computers with NAV 2004 and NAV Corporate 9.0 installed. [Added by JAE 2/21/06.]

* Possibly there is trouble with the drivers for IDE hard disks; in Device Manager, remove the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (main controller) and reboot for Plug and Play to start over.

* With an NTFS file system, the permissions for the page file?s drive?s root directory must give ?Full Control? to SYSTEM. If not, there is likely to be a message at boot that the system is ?unable to create a page file.?

My computer regularly tells me that I have low virtual memory. I am nervous about deleting things on my computer, but I know there are programs that I don't need or use. I have a 7 or 8 year old Dell, and am considering buying a new computer, perhaps a laptop, but I want to get the most out of my desktop while I have it. How do I know what to delete and how to delete these items? Thanks.

A:low virtual memory

Virtual memory has nothing to do with deleting things on your computer. Virtual memory refers to a section of your HD where Windows stores information that would normally go into dynamic RAM (the memory DIMMs on your motherboard) if you had more memory AND Windows had the ability to address all that memory (I have yes to see a computer that has enough memory to avoid having to use virtual memory). If you're getting a "low virtual memory" message, it probably means your virtual memory setting is Custom, meaning Windows is not allowed to increase or decrease it. Try changing it to "System managed size", as follows:

* Click Start, Control Panel, and double-click System
* Click the Advance tab
* In the Performance Options, click the Settings button
* Click the Advanced tab, and in the Virtual Memory section (last one on the page), click the Change button.
* Click the radio button next to "System managed size", then click the Set button and click OK.

You will be asked to reboot to put the setting into effect.

This will allow Windows, not your hardware, to decide how much virtual memory it needs and adjust it accordingly. Hope this solves the problem.

My windows 7 machine has 16 Gb of RAM memory, an SSD (vertex 111Gb) disk and 2 WD (1Tb) harddisks.
To save space on my SSD, I was advised to remove my virtual memory, which I did several months ago.
Everything worked fine after that, even Photoshop.
This week I started working with MAGIX which is a filmediting program en I unfortunately had several crashes since then.
I can normally restart my computer after the crash, but find the situation very disturbing.
Could the removal of the virtual memory be the reason?
Is it a good idea to put it back, or what advice could you give me?
If I restore the vm should I let windows organise the size?
If anybody could be of some help, I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance, Peter Keller

Sorry, if I made mistakes in this mail due to the fact that English is not my native language.

@PMK, I have 32 Gb and have my virtual memory set at system managed, and set on my drive D. This is the easiest way to set it up. Note, put the virtual memory on one of your spinners. Regards; Sarris

Hi, I am having a problem with my computer. It's an upgraded XP from Millenium. Most every time I am on the computer a little popup comes up and says low virtual memory. I have tried changing the setting but it still has not help. I am hoping someone out there can please assist me in my dilemma. My computer runs fine despite the low virtual popup.

By the way - I am recommending this site to anyone who will listen. This is great site. This site helped me fixed a problem that I have had with my (same) computer for over a year now that noone could explain.

A:Low Virtual Memory

XP uses a lot more resources than ME. Low virtual memory might be an indication that you really need more RAM. How much RAM do you have and how much free space on your hard drive? To what did you change the setting?

John

I have a Dell 8400 w/xp home edition intel pentium 3.00ghz 512mb memory which 108gb of free space. I keep getting a virtual low memory message. I have tried changing the number of the virtual (nothing helped) I have had my computer checked over and there is no virus or a reason. Some of my games seem to run very slow (ie the sims 2). Can anyone please tell me what I should do....get more memory, another hard drive, a better video card? I really have no clue. Please help. Thank you.

When you get the low memory message press ctrl-shift-esc and choose the processes tab. Sort the table by memory usage (click twice on the column header). See what processes are using the most RAM and report back.

A box keeps appearing in the bottom left hand corner of my screen saying, your computer is low on virtual memory and also when I'm searching the web a box comes up saying Warning; Unresponsive Script. A script on this page may be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Is there any way to fix this problem.I really don't know if there is a start up program or something else in my PC taking up all the virtual memory. Please can someone help me with this problem?Thank you.

A:Virtual Memory

To address the 'virtual memory' warning you could free up some space on your C:drive(default location of paging file) and increase the 'paging file' size to one and a half times( microsoft's recommendation) the total amount of RAM you have installed.

To set the paging file size in XP : right-click "my computer" on "start menu'>properties>Advanced> Performance Settings>Advanced>Virtual Memory.click on Change.

Hope this gets you on the right road.

See the below signature information first.

My virtual memory is at 4 gigs. Is that not enough, or too much? I do play graphics intense games and am looking for an increase in performance. I will increase the physical memory soon, but for now I am looking at other options.
Also, I am wondering if virtual memory needs to be set on my other partition drives as well or leave them without?

Swap space? It's at 3 gigs. Not sure how to increase this.

Utilize the physical address extension (PAE)?

Question:

I keep receiving message after message regarding
low virtual memory low - What is virtual memory? It is not the amount of ram
corect but memory that resides on the mother board? I am still running Windows
Running Windows XP service pack 3 and McAfee virus protection.

The system runs slow even though I have deleted temp files and removed some
programs that were loaded by me over the years that are hardly used.
I have gone in an cleaned disk and defraged the drive.

Still runs slow and clocks out for serveral minutes before it even loads
