Forgot to ask this in my last thread. Is there any difference between a mid-tower ATX case and a full-tower other than height? Thanks.
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You could have a defective power switch on the PC case. Test this by using the reset switch as a temporary power switch. The power switch and the reset switch are the same for practical purposes except, of course, the size of the button (on most cases). If the reset switch works and is able to start the PC, then you know the power switch is defective.

"Practical" is debatable.
Bought the following brand new at Best Buy on and trying to get setup Lenovo K e desktop tower keyboard and mouse LG MP HQ monitor MS Office key code Webroot internet security disc After connecting everything according to the instruction of both the Lenovo and LG instructions double amp triple checking all parts accounted for and connected properly here s what happened Lenovo tower up turn Monitor tower, hooked on doesn't to but boots up fine disc drive in tower opens and closes properly Lenovo keyboard and mouse both detected Great so far except LG monitor does not turn on at all In the back of the monitor two things are connected blue HDMI connector with pins on both sides is connected to HDMI connection in back of tower AC DC adapter plugged into electrical outlet and other end directly into monitor Everything works when power booted up except monitor shows no life - no light indicator and black screen Monitor hooked up to tower, but doesn't turn on Monitor just doesn t turn on at all There are driver discs for both lenovo win and the LG monitor and like I said I can insert them into the tower and close but nothing happens on the monitor display Best Buy said it should be no issue using the LG monitor with the Lenovo PC tower They will charge me to come out to my home even though I bought two year Geek Squad plan They also said I would still get charged even if they were unable to get Monitor hooked up to tower, but doesn't turn on me setup Seems like there is one probably really easy fix but I don t want to pay to have them come out if I get charged regardless of the outcome Anyone out there with any idea what could be preventing the monitor from powering up other than Monitor hooked up to tower, but doesn't turn on it s bad which is unlikely as it was brand new sealed in the box Thanks nbsp
If no standby LED on monitor, is there a separate on/off switch on the side of the monitor?
With LG there are usually manual buttons for CH+- & vol +- plus On/Off (although I have seen monitors with no on/off at all.)
Also check for 'hidden' buttons on the front lower edge of frame or under the front (right) edge.
I would try a different mains lead/cord that is known to to work, also check for a fuse in the plug, could be missing, or isolated with plastic foil.
Even with no inputs the monitor would show a 'No Signal' sign if it was working.
If no 'standby' LED and you have a separate AC to DC adapter block then that could be the problem. All monitors I've seen have a direct AC connection though.
If it then does work, the on-screen menu will need to be selected, and 'input' changed to HDMI.
I've been playing crysis 3 a lot lately and it usually run's my GPU temp around 65-70 degree's ( MSI GeForce GTX 770 4GB TWIN FROZR ) I know the card is suppose to run up to 80 degree's no problem but I was just wondering if I played at these higher temps for 3-5 hours at a time. Would that be to much stress in terms of heat on the GPU ??
I have the Corsair 230T Windowed-BLUE ATX Mid Tower Case> I have just the stock fans in it and I was looking to add more. I was just wondering if people have preference over tower fans ? if so what are some good ones and why ?
Even 85C for extended periods is fine.
A few years back I was talking with a friend about dust bunnies in a tower & how to keep them out.
I had a somewhat odd idea of using a case covering somewhat like a pillow case to do such. It gets dirty, take it off & put another one on. Much like an air filter in a car. Does that sound ridicules or not?? Just curious.
Might keep 80% of the dust out, but not all would be stopped. Could also get in the way of case cooling, by entrapping heat insde.
Guys many people say I cant because the G41 has only a pci express slot 2. If its correct please tell me a vga to buy..
Could you please specify what Make and exact model the motherboard is? G41 does not help much. Is it Intel, Gigabyte, MSI, etc... More information is needed before we can help you.
I have recently started getting a warning:
"(U)SIM full, please delete or else cann't receive."
I use a D-Link usb dongle to connect to the net, and there are no SMS?s on the SIM card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay so let s get the hardware out of the Screen Resolution Applications Full Color in and Issues way first nVidia EVGA GTX I - k GB Corsair RAM Asus P P Deluxe I think Can find the box if it s a big deal Windows Pro SP For displays I have a Sony Bravia TV running HDMI off of the Resolution and Color Issues in Full Screen Applications GPU and a Zenbo running VGA off of the GPU s DVI Onwards to the issue Both TV s run fine for what they are but when I decide to do anything that s a full screen application two things happen every time Resolution and Color Issues in Full Screen Applications First and foremost I lost dramatic picture quality Specifically my color looks all washed out and grainy as if I m going from a bit to a - and this will persist until Secondly my resolutions get warped resulting in the process I m running actually being a little bit larger than my display thus I lose about an inch on all sides Also for some games such as the new Tomb Raider I get a message saying that Windows Aero has been temporarily disabled to improve performance This doesn t always pop up but does so enough during other more graphically intense games Crysis to be a point of concern Here s the tricky part I just tried to screencap this problem and seemingly it does not exist That is it say when I took a screencap of the edges being off the screencap show they re there Same with my video quality the problem doesn t show up on the screencap despite the fact that I know it s there I took a before after picture of my desktop showing how things are cut off and look terrible And it s the same image So this means that my GPU is processing the image properly but my displays or something to do with how it s getting to the displays is not functioning correctly But I don t understand this because this happens across all of my monitors I ve got another E-Machines p monitor that I just recently stopped using and it still does it as well I m sort of getting frustrated with this I m not technologically illiterate but for the life of me I have no idea what could be causing this I ve tampered with the settings in Windows and in my nVidia control panel to no avail I also know through Driver Genius that all my drivers are up to date Thoughts nbsp
Take a photo.
Do you have up to date NVIDIA drivers?
Try it with only one TV connected.

Hi, I want to get a new case with good airflow, which of these two cases do you think would be best?
Case 1: http://www.xcase.co.uk/product-p/case-x-case-defender.htm
Case 2: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281082198519?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
They both has a front, rear and side fan, the difference is that one has a large side fan and one has a 120mm side fan, the one with the small side fan however also has a top exhaust fan where the other doesn't
I don't know which would be best.
The ebay one has better airflow and potential, while the red case just dumps air on top of the mobo.
I'd go with the ebay one.
Gents, built my own machine last year and installed a 60GB SSD strictly for Win 7 only (have two other HD's installed for storage and programmes)
Lately im getting alerts to say my SSD is now full and after doing what I could through the tools on Win 7 I was only able to free up 5 GB's What the hell is on here? Win updates? Everything I do is directed to my HD on the E: drive
Alternative is to buy another - can you transfer the root HD to another HD? really didnt plan for this, I know 60GB isnt that large but it was only ever to use as a boot drive.
System restore points or pagefile maybe?
On my W7 tower, I've been seeing a WI FI icon
but assumed it just meant I could use a usb wi fi device on it which I have done. Well, today curiosity got the best of me & I pulled the DSL out of the back & it totally amazed me to know I was still online, no usb.
How long have towers been like laptops, come wi fi enabled?
A tower can have wifi "enabled" if it has a wifi card.
This is confusing to me. Anytime I've been on a laptop in my apt. I have no problem getting a good or very good signal on it, yet using the same Belkin USB device on my tower in the same exact place, low or less than good connection.
The router is on the first floor, I'm on the 2nd floor & a few walls are in between . Why?
I'm thinking of having the router moved, a booster used or relocationg the router.
I'm currently on DSL . Wi-fi is just an option.TIA
The router should be on the second floor above most of the equipment that it is actually connected to it for the best possible signal strength. I'd guess you're having a driver issue between the different computers, but you're probably gonna tell me that both computers are Windows 7 and have the same driver or something like that.
So I have this problem: I have this new graphic card for my tower PC and I was wondering could I combine my laptop and my tower motherboard so that I can use the graphic card on my laptop?
Or is there another way to use it with my laptop (maybe a adapter or something?)
I live in a 3 story house and the modem is on the first floor.. I had a netgear wndr 3700 and I got full bars on my laptop while in my room. But when I do a constant ping to www.google.com I get high latency and dropped packets. I step one step threw my doorway and the signal cleans up. Its weird due to the fact that I have full bars. I figured hey try a new router so I got a linksys ea4200. Same thing full bars packet loss. not sure what could cause it.
win I fixed it... put it on channel 9 and its getting a much better signal up here. Disregard this lol
Hey everyone, recently I purchased another 8Gb of Kingston HyperX RAM and installed it into my computer which already had 4Gb. However, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit says 12Gb installed (6Gb usable). I think it is an issue with my motherboard but I'm not too proficient with this so I'd like to seek some advice and whether this can be overcome. My system specs are as follows:
Intel i7 870 @ 2.93 GHz
Asus ATI 6870
Kingston HyperX CL7 4Gb Kit (Originally purchased)
Kingston HyperX CL9 8Gb Kit (Purchased today, the shop assistant told me that they no longer bring in the CL7 due to it being too costly. They told me my CL7 would function as a CL9 once I put my new kit in)
As mentioned before, I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit version.
Thank you very much for your help!
You could try opening msconfig>boot>advanced options and make sure "Maximum memory" is unchecked?
Nvidia P356 Quadro FX4600 graphics card - 768MB GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 dual DVI out thank you all
As long as you have a PCI express socket on the motherboard, that card will work. You may need a power cable adapter to be able to connect the card to the power supply
My hp tools drive is full there is nothing but a whole bunch of files that I can't open and I can't delete but I keep getting this system message saying that it is full and I don't know what to do or if I should use a program like CCleaner to wipe the drive. I think it may have infor for system recovery but there is also a drive and my that says Recovery so I could be wrong I'm just very confused about this right now.
This HP Tools partition is not meant to be accessed outside of the HP Utilities. You can delete the E partition to gain hard drive space, but like I said the E drive is only accessed when you enable the appropriate HP Utility. You should also see a Recovery partition
Hey guys I have just built myself a new rig full setup below in case when CPU over on load is My 100C full you need to see everything and when i was moving my tower to a more suitable place my stock heatsink fan somehow un-clipped and fell off I then placed it back on and i found that when running games or any kind My CPU is over 100C when on full load of demanding process it reaches temperatures of around C The idle temperature is around - C Is there anything i can do about this I am going to try re-applying the thermal paste as well so if you have any tips about that that would be great SETUP i Quad core GHz GB RAM GTX Asus Rampage III Gene Micro-ATX Cooler Master HAF FANS With my case i had built in fans One at the front one on the top and one My CPU is over 100C when on full load at the back My i is using a stock heatsink that came with it But after it falling off i think the thermal paste isn t applied properly So also is there any other way after applying a new layer or My CPU is over 100C when on full load thermal paste that i can keep my system running as cool as possible nbsp
It's almost definitely the thermal paste - make sure you clean off any residue before re-applying. Now might be a good time to get an aftermarket HSF also. Even a cheap CM 212 Evo would be much better.
Hi all im looking at building a tower for general use and gaming as cheap as possible and best place to buy parts mainly what u reccomend i get please help

Somewhere there is a young and budding computer tech who would love to have that, and improve upon it, if the price is right.
Otherwise, it is always helpful to have a computer in reserve for when things do not go right. on the new one.
all of a sudden my computer did not kick on and recorde a tv show i tried to start it and it seemed not to have enough power fans were tuning slow nothing showing up on monitor I turned it off and unplugged the two dvd recorders computer started i plug one back in and it started thought the one dvd player was bad but i put it in resume and the next time it Computer does full have power not was to turn on it did not i tried to turn it on and the same thing happend run slowly turned it off and the when i turned it on it started But it happened agian the next time i tried to turn it on please help i am new to buildilng computers this was my first it is about years old and never had a problem thank you for your help Also today it has started when i try to start it it runs real slow for a few seconds and then shuts off wait a few seconds try again and it may run then all of a sudden it will quit nbsp
What are the components and power supply? Over time PSU's lose some ability to output what they did new. They can also just die. Unplugging DVD drives isn't going to give you very much additional power because they only use a couple watts on startup.
Hello I recently posted on this forum after having issues with my computer not booting Then the PSU literally blew up a day later Old System Specs Q MSI P N Diamond Silverpower sp w has good reviews just not well known Corsair GB HD The issue I had was turn on pc everything lights up but GPU fan spins at full speed as if it was getting no power or connecting to motherboard G-card will not boot at all I did however find a very strange work around To boot the machine I had to remove the pin CPU power on the motherboard Turn the machine on but no boot Turn it off and replace CPU power Turn machine back on and everything works perfectly So It seems that the card can never boot up from cold If I re-started it worked fine I now have a new motherboard cpu RAM and PSU Both motherboards work perfectly with my tester g-card New PC Parts I k Gigabyte GA-Z X-UD P-B Corsair TX w V The new one fails to boot at all even with various different power cables removed I cannot RMA card as it is No works fan kinda speed boot, card? mobo faulty on other - - full 5870 second-hand BY using my 5870 No boot, fan full speed - kinda works on other mobo - faulty card? trick on the old motherboard it works perfectly so the card actually works It s just having big issues accepting power to 5870 No boot, fan full speed - kinda works on other mobo - faulty card? boot Would flashing the g-card bios help This quote is from an article about flashing the g-card bios It seems to sum up my issue the video BIOS initializes the card As soon as it receives power from the motherboard the BIOS activates the card and identifies itself to the motherboard BIOS In short the video BIOS starts and identifies the card and provides its initial crop of settings However if I can get any advice on other things to try out then I will happily do them The PSU s are not at fault as There is the same issue with a new Antec PSU and my brand new Corsair TC w which is supposed to be one of the dogs bollox of PSU s Thanks in advance for your reply Ivan G-S nbsp
Welcome to the world of custom building lol, my computer has similar problems that if i have had it turned off for more than 5 minutes it will not boot and keeps bluescreen until i do a clean boot with a power drain, my solution to that is do just set the bios on the MB to use a 1W standby and leave it in sleep mode always (reboot it every so often)
Good morning people I am currently running a laptop however am looking at going for a desktop build so that I can upgrade as I Portable on the market cases go along - and not have to pay thousands every years for technology - months behind the market So my query is as space Portable cases on the market is currently a major issue for me at the moment I need a case that is as portable as possible without compromising cooling capacity My main issue right now is both space and access to power points Where I am I will have to constantly move the PC when I have finished with it and only really have access to power point I have bought the components already and just need a case to place them in I am using an ASUS P H M-ATX Motherboard and will need a case to fit it Does anyone have any ideas of cases out there that are fully portable and will allow me to move it with ease nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/portable-cases-on-the-market.173612/

Typo: you listed the monitor twice, once under PSU, Otherwise those parts look fine however even though it is a minitower due to the front mounted power supply that case will support a full ATX motherboard. I would personally recommend a Full ATX motherboard since they offer much more expansion. This is a good option and only costs slightly more, Although If you go with something like this you will get SATA 6gbps, USB 3.0, more memory slots, and a faster chipset.
Also Biostar motherboards are ok but far from the best try to look for boards from Gigabyte, ASUS, or MSI.
I know it may sound stupid, but is there some sort of handle or attachment for cases to make them portable.
If yes please let me know.
I am not aware of any - that is what laptops are for. However Cooler Master makes the Storm Scout case with a built in handle on top - but it kind of looks like an old 5 gallon gas can:
Maybe you could invent something a get rich. Might be a demand for something like that - maybe a could of straps that would wrap around the computer and connect to a handle on top where the straps could be synched up. You could leave it on one computer or use it for any computer you wanted to move or lug around.
I was curious if The Enthusiast's PC was the best setup that can be built for under $2k This includes All hardware and Software. (multiple monitors is a + also)
Strong emphasis on DirectX 11 games and Battlefield 3.
any takers to the challenge?

at this point being this close to a new line of CPU's, the possible performance increase, and the effect on pricing from both sides, I would wait until sept if you can. You might benefit from it greatly.
I have a sony viao laptop and i am working on this for the past 3 years with no problems.
Today i started my laptop and my monitor started showing me white spots and the display started showing big icons and white spots.
I tried restoring the PC to the last working ,did not work.
The display is proper till windows loads, after loading it is gone
Some one please suggest what might be the problem. I have attached the screenshot also
that looks like you need to set the resolution and color depth to me.
Hey guys, I recently bought an old HP OEM computer (a 'dc7700', I think) off eBay. It's one of those towers that is placed horizontally, and it's quite thin. I was planning on using it as an HTPC but it lags when trying to watch HD movies, so I think I'm going to buy some really low-end graphics card.
I was looking at this one (I'm in Australia and it's either eBay or local IT shops):
I'm wondering, will this fit in the tower? Do I need to specifically look for a low-profile graphics card? Thanks in advance.
I wasn't aware that certain cases don't support usb 3.0, how is this possible since it's the same size/shape as usb 2.0?
Because USB 3.0 is just now beginning to be implemented. Plus, there is a ton of surplus cases with USB 2.0 by the many manufactures still in stock that needs to be moved.
Even brand new offerings from laptop manufactures still only carry USB 2.0 though some are offered with 3.0.
At this point neither AMD or Intel offer native support on their cpus for USB 3.0 though if rumor holds true the new AMD Bulldozer cpus may offer it.
As for cases the Cooler Master HAF-942 has it and the newer version of the HAF-932 has it as well. Keep in mind these are full towers.
Hello guys this is my first post in this forum.
I work in IT support, and I came across a problem with someone I work with.
Guy called Tony, had a USB stick in one of his front USB ports on his computer, he accidently kicked it and broke some of the USB off in the port.
He has 2 ports on the front, and now when he plugs something into the one that isnt broken, a cooling fan at the top of the computer goes crazy, and it cant be stopped until the computer is shut down, and the USB doesnt register on the computer.
Is this a problem with wires? Or is it just a problem where the ports at the front need replaing all together?
Is this a problem with wires? Or is it just a problem where the ports at the front need replaing all together?Click to expand...
Hard to say at this state.
By "a piece broken off", do you mean Mr. Tony broke the flashstick so that the USB-male is still plugged in, but the drive itself has been detached? Have you removed the piece which is still inside? (It helps ) - also, which OS is the computer running? This is sort of important, as different OS's works (a little) differently regarding the USB-ports.
Currently, it looks like you simply need to remove that piece stuck inside. Although if that doesn't fix the problem (or if there is no piece stuck inside), then probably a connection or two inside the port broke when the flashstick was kicked - resulting in a need for changing the entire port .
Can anyone shed any light on a problem I looked at over the weekend The guy tells me hard drive Mysteriously full that he went out in the morning and his computer Mysteriously full hard drive was working fine Mysteriously full hard drive using about a quarter of the hard drive space GB when he Mysteriously full hard drive came home his computer was very slow and his drivehad only GB of space Noone had used it during the day as he lives on his own We have run Mcafee Malwarebytes Combofix and Ccleaner and cleaned out some stuff but nothing much I checked all his files and directories and the evidence suggests that there is only about - GB on the drive so what is filling it up I unhid all the files before I checked what was on the drive incase something was hidden I ran diagnostics on memory and drive and everything seems to be fine I have fixed it by formatting and reloaded the software although I boticed that the format seemed to take much longer than I expected Have any of you guys experienced anything like this or have an idea what was filling the drive because it had me beat nbsp

The Acer C: drive is now full and the Data D: drive is empty, but it is not recognizing it automatically. This computer is my brother's, he bought it new and has it at my house. It came formatted with no disc's and I'm not sure where his books for it are. Can anyone tell me how to activate the second hard drive so I can use itunes and download video, etc.
It would be very much appreciated. My brother uses the computer here but it has been here for at least 3 years maybe and the book is misplaced. He mostly uses it for youtube, facebook, and stuff like that and is less computer educated than I am at tech stuff, which isn't saying much.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Boot into Bios, usually by hitting F8 as soon as the POST screen appears and see if the hard drives are both recognised. If the spare drive does not show in the Bios it either has a fault or it is not correctly connected.

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.
Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.
Hi, I'm experiencing a problem with watching videos (YouTube and the like) in full screen mode. My system is three years old with all specs in my profile. Specifically the problem is that when I start a video from YouTube or wherever for that matter, and I click on the box giving me the option to watch the video in full screen mode, the video box will attempt to go to full screen then will revert back to the initial box size. What can be tried to correct this?
Wow with all the techies out here and I can't get anyone to respond to my question?
GEESH! To add to my question, I should say that I'm reasonably sure my OS is clean and clear of all of the virus/spyware nasties.

It appears that during a storm, my tower was damaged, affected, whatever. The tower will not turn on. However, the green light on the back below the electrical plug flashes when plugged up. I have tried making sure that the on off swich is making contact, and I plan to unplug all the electrical plugs that could have been affected and then seeing if it works, and plugging them back in one by one to see if one of them were damaged. I have been told that there is a fuse that could have been blown but I cannot find a mention of one nor placement of one on the mother board. Is there a fuse?
I have also made sure that the surge protector has been reset, the outlet is fine, etc.

internal to the PSU and nothing you would recognize if you saw it.
A good friend had this very same experience and we had to replace the PSU and all was just fine. Having suffered once, the user quickly added a UPS to the setup.
I'm sure the question in the title is very noob, but I just assumed that full HD monitors would connect to the graphics card via a HDMI cable?
Thanks in advance!
Not really necessary, DVI carries the same video signal as HDMI ... just no audio. You can use a DVI to HDMI cable for your connection.
Ok so im moving all of my componats into a new PC case, My old one is a Coolermaster elite 430, and frankly the cooling is not so good. I have two choises the Coolermaster 690II Advanced case and the Fractal Design Define R3. Which case would be better for
In case you guys have any other ideas the dimentions of the biggest case that could fit under my desk is (WxHxD) 22cm x 60cm x 53.5cm.
Also I have another question what CPU cooler under 50 pounds sterling is the best on the market at the moment.
Hope to hear from you
According to this review, the CM690II has slightly better cooling performance.
As far as expandability, The Cooler Master can hold more 5.25" drives, but fewer 3.5" drives. Also, the Cooler Master can support longer video cards like the 5970, since the bottom HDD cages are removable.
The Fractal Design case comes with sound absorbing inserts, so it would be quieter.
can any 1 help? ive tryed 2 put my external hardrive in2 my tower as it stopped working, and have it as 2nd hard drive ,i have connected it properly but the tower cant seem 2 find it?
Are you saying you're trying to install external drives internally? So you removed them from their enclosures? Are these SATA or ATA/IDE drive? Does the BIOS see the drives? Which motherboard do you have?

I just purchased a 1TB Samsung Story Station. I am backing up some files from my PC and get an error message before it even reaches 30gb saying that the hard drive is full?
When I first got the drive I connected it to my PC and put some files on it. Since then I have also connected it to my Mac and and takes some files from my PC and transferred them to the Mac using the Story Station.
Can anyone tell me why I am getting the error message saying it is full when there is only around 30gb being taken up?
What do you see in disk management, especially partitions, space and file system?

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.
So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?
Thx in adance.
If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?
how to set 3d hardware acceleration to full??
Are you talking about Hardware Acceleration setting in the display properties?
I know this is a little nooby, but idle it's around 35-40C and when I'm just on the internet or editing it's around 50-70C. Under a full load it goes very high around 80-95C.
CPU- Intel Core i7 860 OC'd to 3.94Ghz
Any tips on if it is to high.
Hi I had a Dell Dimension e Recently my video card it was an upgraded card not the original had a small fan in it but overheating always not speed, fan on System full overheated I replaced it with the original video card which works fine The overheating seems to have been caused by the heat sink and system fan they are attached being clogged with a System fan always on full speed, but not overheating large amount of dust I tried compressed air and even a small brush but could not get to it I resorted to removing the heat sink from the processor removing the dust cleaning the old thermal paste off and reapplying new thermal paste The computer is now running normally except that the fan is stuck on high speed I downloaded speedfan and system is running cool I have tried updating the bios this did not fix it Speedfan does not recognize my fan settings and i cannot modify them using it I opened up the case and found the System fan always on full speed, but not overheating fan connector on the motherboard unplugged it and replugged it no change Computer is working and not overheating but this is really annoying I am considering replacing the fan any other suggestions nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/system-fan-always-on-full-speed-but-not-overheating.147874/
Iv no idea how to find out the make or moduel of the fan One day last year it beggan to make strange noises rattling When i reset the pc tower PC fan noisy is it stopped I looked online recently and found it could be multiple reasons so i opend the pc took a good look inside removed the fan cleaned very single area of the fan put it back in ensuring nothing was damaged When i turn the pc on and im looking at the fan it seems to be working perfectly but with the noise If i run my finger along the smooth centre to slow it it makes no noise If i slow it down with the three speed button thing that hangs from the fan then it still makes a noise The fan has lie a suspension on it and when i press PC tower fan is noisy it in theres no noise when i let it go the noise rattles again I personally think that inside the fan right where the motor is spinning theres is a problem of dust or something but i can t be sertain I want my fan to make no noise but be on full speed as befour since im a heavy gamer and i work with music too What should i do If i want to buy a new fan how do i choose one that will fit into it s place My pc uses a fan for the power supply a fan for the cpu and a fan on the side of the tower What do i do if i want to add more fans to my pc tower nbsp
To find a fan or a similar size, just measure the old one in mm and get the same size locally or online. Case fans are generally 80MM, 92mm or 120mm.
Adding fans where they are no holders or screw holes would require something as simple as twist or zip ties or actually modifying the case to accept more fans.
Any build that I have done the case has been designed with the PSU top mounted. However, the latest trend has been cases with the PSU mounted on the bottom. I am looking at purchasing a new case for a new build and the PSU will be installed on the bottom.
What are the advantages? Anything to be aware of? Thanks.
Having built a few systems with bottom mount PSU's (including my own 800D and Lian Li's) I'd say the principle differences are:
1. Most modern bottom mount cases have divided interiors (thermal zones)- the "floor" of the main mobo compartment channels air to chipset/graphics card more efficiently.
2. Bottom mount provides better cable hiding and cable management (providing that there is sufficient room behind the motherboard tray and adequate cut-outs in the tray)
3. Centre of gravity is much lower
4. If the chassis has top mount fans then heat dispersal is good. A top mount PSU is ingesting warm air.
5. Most bottom mount chassis I've used have better clearance/less cluttered space above the motherboard tray, thus a better arrangement for larger aftermarket CPU coolers.
6. If watercooling, a roof mounted radiator is much more effective than a vertical mount-it will also make for a cleaner complete-in-chassis install -Assuming of course that the chassis roof is capable of accepting a rad.
That's about it.
BTW: If the bottom mount PSU chassis is a full tower then checking out the cable length for the motherboard 24 pin and EPS 12v on the PSU before final install could be an advantage.

Does installing a graphics card mean you can achieve higher resolutions on your LCD monitor? That is partly the reason I will be purchasing one.
Thanks for any info or suggestions,

That depends on the maximum resolution supported by your monitor.
What's your main reason to purchase the card? What's your budget?
OK I have 2 Lite On 22x Dual Layer burners installed in my PC both are IDE
A few days ago after a windows update the master burner seemed to stop running at max speed when reading/burning now the 2nd burner seems to be doing the same...
Now the first burner is a couple years old and I have put it to a lot of use but the 2nd burner has barely been used
A few days ago I was ripping and burning a DVD in 25 mins or so now it is taking an hour or more....
Discs being burned on haven't changed and I haven't changed any of the programs settings..
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Might check in device manager to see that they aren't running in PIO mode rather than DMA (think its under the ide controller rather than the drive itself).

I have this 1Tb external drive that says it only hase 115G left, and I went through all my stuff on the drive and I only have 620G on it. The actual amount of space on the drive total is 930G, but this still doesn't add up. Anyone know what could be taking up extra room, or suggestions on what to do?
Edit: Running check disk right now to see if it can find any corrupted sectors or file errors that are large enough to almost take up 200G
Edit: It's done running, it said that it found some corrupted files and fixed them, but it didn't free up any room on the drive. Now running Disk Defrag
Edit: No fragmentation found, Avira finds no virus' on the drive.
bump, any ideas?
I have been having this problem as long as i can remember, but i finally got the time to ask around.
When i put almost any video in full screen, the video works fine for a couple of minutes, but then the picture starts getting laggy and so does the sound. But when i takes it off of full screen it works fine.
I have checked all updates for my video card, and almost every piece related. I have a GeForce 9800M GTS 1GB.
And i don't think its a virus because i do have a scanner/firewall.
Try to use different Video Player. Try to put the drivers you have before getting that problem or simply put an old driver on it to test it.
I use win xp pro, and I just installed Windows Media Player, but why the player stop playing in full-screen mode? It's ok minutes ago. I know this question is kind of stupid, any one knows how to fix it.
It is a feature of Windows Media Player, not a fault
It will automatically pause when manually selecting "Full Screen" (I suspect just to allow you to get ready)
You then need to press "Play" to play it again
Can I also suggest that you try another Media Player > Free VLC Media Player
It does an excellent job at playing most movies (anyway, much more than WMP) And is very easy to use, and I use it
I want to try my hand at some modding ideas i have and was wondering if anyone knew where i can get Computer cases dirt Cheap. Bye cheap i mean like 10 dollars or less. I don't care what color they are or anything.I have done some searching and haven't found any that cheap yet . So if anyone knows plz tell me. Thank you .
If you have a computer/tech store near by you, try there. The one closest to me has old cases, which I asked about, and the owner offered to sell them for 5 dollars each. Your next best bet would be to ask friends and family if they have any old or broken computers you could take.
The computer I'm working on says it has 13.6 GB of used disk and 309 MG of free. The Vaio case says it has a 120 GB hard disk. I deleted some programs but I haven't been able to delete enough to run defrag or check disk. Is there a program I can run from a flash drive that will help? Or perhaps one to transfer files to the other internal hd or an external one? Also system tools doesn't have backup listed.
Here are two programs to remove temp files:
CCleaner (Note this is the "portable" version)
Provides a graphical and "drill-down" view of your disk usage. It also supports multiple ways to view your usage (e.g. by folder, by file type, ascending or descending order, top 50 file sizes, etc)

What are you using to test the speeds? It was never a high speed laptop in the first place, but it has always been a darn good and reliable one.
Large hard drive can make a difference if it is 100 GB or larger... using the Dell version of Windows... the system wastes too much time checking empty space.
Be sure you have WXP SP2 installed, but hold back on WXP SP3, as SP3 protects Microsoft, but slows down an already slow laptop.

Hi everyone I m new here and have read over some of the posts and stickies but have not found my issue I have a Dell Pentium R CPU GHz and GB RAM extra added tower - Dell monitor brightens/darkens 4550 overheating? by me I have never gotten any kind of Dell 4550 monitor brightens/darkens - tower overheating? warning or message that my tower fan was not working properly For the last couple of weeks I have noticed my computer monitor brightening a lot and then darkening screen is still readable and then going back to normal This will happen anywhere from to times in a two hour period I have been Dell 4550 monitor brightens/darkens - tower overheating? turning off the computer when not in use giving it a chance to cool down which I now realize was the worst thing to do Today when I went to fire it up for about the third time during the start-up Windows shut down quot to protect itself quot and gave me a blue screen message to turn off the computer and restart I did and have not had that issue again Dell 4550 monitor brightens/darkens - tower overheating? today I have placed a large fan behind the tower and the problem seems to have stopped for now which leads me to believe the problem is caused by overheating The tower casing was cleaned inside around months ago but was very dusty My questions Does this sound like a tower fan problem and how do I check that it is working properly Are there capacitors or something else I should be checking for heat damage and replacing I know I really just need a new computer but that won t be happening for a while so any help you could give me to keep this one sputtering along would be greatly appreciated Thanks much nbsp
Hi Jeri, welcome to TS. I'm not sure specifically about the 4550, but I know most Dells will post a warning on boot if the fan isn't working properly. If you haven't seen the message, it's probably not the fan.
If you're up to it (which it sounds like you are if you upgraded the ram yourself), open it up and look if the fan is spinning while the computer's running and also while you're in there dust out the computer, especially the cpu cooler and video card heatsink. While cleaning it out, look at the capacitors on the motherboard and/or video card to make sure they aren't leaking or bulging. A cap should be flat on top, it should not be "pointy" or rounded on top or leaking from the top or bottom. I've seen bad caps on a 4550 before, close to the cpu socket (between the rear ports and cpu), so make sure to look to be sure. You may have to remove the green "air duct" to be able to see the caps on the board.
Also, are you sure the problem is with the computer and not the monitor? It almost sounds like you might be having a problem with the backlighting on the monitor (assuming it's an lcd). Any chance of testing the monitor on another computer to be sure?
I suppose there's always the possibility of a a failing power supply as well. Sometimes when a power supply is flaky (power fluctuations, noise, etc) it can cause weird issues like BSODs among other things. It's possible that your power supply fan could have failed, and if the power supply is overheating it could be acting up.
is there a chart showing which way the air flow should be for case fans?
I am looking to add more to a new system I am building and I wanted some ideas to make sure I am getting the maximum air flow to keep my system cool as possible
Is it a good idea to modify a case to add more fans to it?
This case currently can hold 2 front case fans 1 side intake fan 1 rear fan with 2 built into the PSU - all fans but 1 on the PSU are 80mm
this might be helpful. you should decide if you want to have a negative pressure flow, or a positive pressure flow. each has its advantages
I have a Dell Vostro running Vista Home Premium I started noticing that when playing games sometimes performance would go down considerably which coincided with doesn't Laptop and speed fan reach overheats full the laptop being considerably hotter to the touch I Laptop overheats and fan doesn't reach full speed installed speedfan to check if this was true and as it turns out the gpu can reach up to C without the fan going full speed I can hear it run but not full speed The fan might reach full speed but not necessarily when the temperature is at is highest which means that the laptop usually overheats when playing videogames I m not sure if this Laptop overheats and fan doesn't reach full speed has happened since I purchased the laptop or after upgrading BIOS I Laptop overheats and fan doesn't reach full speed currently have the latest BIOS from Dell A and the latest reference drivers from Nvidia for the videocard which is a geforce M Can it be that the overheating is due to using the reference drivers and not the manufacturers I used the reference drivers because Dell hasn t updated videocard drivers for almost a year nbsp
What games are you trying to play on that computer? Hopefully they are not that demanding because the Vostro isn't great for newer games. Also make sure that you are not using it on a soft surface (bed, rug, blanket, etc).
The drivers for your video card should not interfere with your fans since it is all integrated into the same motherboard.
Recent history: I downloaded Internet Explorer 8 and immediately had some problems with it. So I had a Microsoft tech help me remove IE8 by using the System Restore. I now am using IE6.
Now, when attempting to use my flash drive the PC thinks it is full even though I have deleted all the files. I looked at the flash drive Properties and indeed it was shown as full.
I then formatted the flash drive and after that the Properties showed it as empty. I once again tried moving one or two small files on to the flash drive and the PC tells me the drive is full again.
The flash drive capacity is 256 mb while the files I attempted to move total only a few kb?s.
Anybody have ideas on what is happening and how to fix it?
Hi Nossamr, are you by chance using vista or windows 7?, the reason i ask is i wonder if when you plug in your flash drive if it is defaulting to dedicating your flash drive to being used for ready boost.

I found this on the ASUS site
or you might try clearing CMOS first, doubt it could hurt and it's easy.
But I also saw that, if you received a support disk with your machine, there should be a BIOS recovery/update program there.
I hope one of these will work for you. Good luck and thanks for posting your system specs.

You will probably have to live with a less than full screen until to can get another video card with HDMI capability, with the HDMI connectors
Hi Since installing Vista -bit I m having trouble with nvidia drivers for it I have a Geforce GTS mb PCI-E graphics card which I have used fine for the last few months I was using Vista -bit those last few months but now I ve made the switch to Vista -bit for the reasons that I get it free through my university and also to see if there is a performance boost Since using Vista -bit and installing the latest and older Nvidia drivers when on my monitor s native resolution x it doesnt fill the whole screen there is about an inch on everyside drivers full to resolution Can't monitor Nvidia go - for where the screen is just black with the desktop sitting inside this obviously I cannot use my monitor like this as x is small enough as it is without it being reduced to a size of about a quot screen I then switched to Omega drivers to see if this would fix it and it does I could run x on the monitor perfectly But when playing some games colours would be different and anti-aliasing would be working etc In the case of GTAIV there weren t actually any textures at all Therefore I would like to use the Nvidia drivers but I can t run the resolution x because of my problem and I really hate using x because all Can't go to full resolution for monitor - Nvidia drivers text is a bit blurry I Can't go to full resolution for monitor - Nvidia drivers have tried using the Nvidia Control Panel to adjust the scaling if I apply any of the scaling options none of them make any different whatsoever there is still an inch of nothing around the displayed desktop Any ideas Thanks for your time Blekk nbsp

The VGA part of EPU-4/6 Engine is realized through the use of SmartDoctor utility. If your card is not supported by the SmartDoctor utility, you would see this error message. Please workaround this error message by removing the SmartDoctor utility. Please note that by removing the SmartDoctor utility, the VGA part of EPU-4/6 Engine will be disabled. But you can still enjoy the rest of EPU-4/6 Engine for saving energy. For a list of VGA cards for EPU-4/6 engine, please refer to the VGA QVL list at this link: http://event.asus.com/mb/six_engine/.Click to expand...
Not sure if that helps or not

Fully run (it says start actually )
Check how much space is now available
Hello, Ive just recently reformated my driver to a fresh reinstall of vista. But somehow my driver is still half full, the capacity of my partitioned hard drive is 109GB. When I checked the remaining space, I only have 77GB which is weird because I havent installed any programs yet.
I dont know what caused it, Its already using 32GB. I checked my program files and its only using 1.1GB the rest is only 3GB.
I would check the size of your windows installation is mine is coming close to 20gb so you will deffo be losing some of that space there

A MicroATX motherboard should fit in an ATX computer case, right?
Yes, it will.
You may have to move some risers though.

Do you have the latest NVIDIA & PhysX drivers installed? Have you turned on PhysX acceleration in the NVIDIA Control Panel? Have you tried turning down the resolution?
I have an eMachines T which I use as up boot Tower Need help. won't a file server I normally leave it running continuously but I inadvertently shut off the breaker to that room while replacing an electrical switch When I tried to restart the computer it won t go It s getting power The fan in the power supply runs but the hard drive doesn t seem to kick in The monitor displays the eMachine logo and says quot Bios information Need help. Tower won't boot up lt F gt quot Need help. Tower won't boot up which doesn t work When I restart the fans kick on but after a couple of seconds - just about long enough for the logo to display on the monitor - but then already the pitch or whine of the fans begins slowing down as it returns to it s resting mode I also tried putting a setup disk in the optical drive but although the drive spins it won t go into the boot mode so it s not looking at those drives I ve tried it more than a dozen times - completely cutting power powering it down and back on using the power button unplugging and plugging back in Nada Someone told me to replace the power supply but I thought I d check here to see if anyone has any experience with this problem Would appreciate any advice or tips Note I do routinely blow the dust out of the fans and from the case It stays very clean since it s in an unused room and it doesn t even get very dusty The company server at work gets a dust buildup like dryer lint about every two weeks but mine wouldn t get THAT dirty in a whole year if I didn t blow it out from time to time so I don t think dirt is an issue unless it s really deep inside the power supply nbsp
Your eMachines is one of those with the infamous failing motherboard. The motherboard failure eventually causes the power supply to fail, and your symptoms are simlar to what we have seen a great number of times... well over 125 times, and we have a lot of failed eMachines in our barn awaiting resolution. Your hard drive, memory, cpu and heatsink are likely still good, and you can rescue the data. But it is possible your motherboard will not work properly again. You might borrow a power supply to test, but I would not waste money on one.
eMachines wants $179 plus shipping for the board, plus $75 for the power supply.
It could also be something as simple as a bad hard drive, and a replacement for $50 or $60 from Newegg, Directron, TigerDirect, Outpost, or ZipZoomfly will take care of it. You can probably still recover the data off the old drive by placing it in an external USB enclosure. Borrow or buy, you can always use another hard drive.
Has anyone ever tried 2PSU's in one tower? I ask because I'd like just one to run my video card <ATI X800GTO> so I'd like to know if that's worthwhile since I have a few laying around that are not all that great. I know it's probably a stupid question, go easy on me.... ;>)
I've never heard of that being done. I don't know where you would get the room. I would recommend that you get a new Psu with greater wattage.
Hey I m gonna be building a computer soon so I m just doing some research about the various parts to make sure they will fit together properly I ve come across and about Question cases cards video a bit of an issue with the graphics card and the case so I ve decided to go with the GeForce GTX which is inches and I picked out a Thermaltake Xaser VI Mx case The FAQ page on Thermaltake states that the case will fit a graphics card no longer than inches OR inches if the hard drive cage is removed So I wanted to know what would be involved with removing the hard drive cage it seems easy enough to do but where do the hard drives go if you take it out Will I be able to fit more than one hard drive in the case if I remove it Question about cases and video cards Or would I be Question about cases and video cards better off just going with a bigger case altogether The problem there is that none of the mid tower cases at Thermaltake support a graphics card any bigger than that they all state the same thing about the hard drive cage and I would rather not get a full tower because they seem to be pretty huge and heavy and I do take my computer to friends houses sometimes So yeah I would really appreciate some help with this issue Thanks nbsp
Just go with a larger case, if you're going to spend 500 dollars on a card you shouldnt have to mod a case to fit it into.
I have an Ultra E-Torque ATX Mid-Tower Case I was wondering if any of you could give me some assistance I am having a problem connecting the front power and led to the mobo an XFX Although I am having problems connecting the cables I did manage to connect everything get the cpu and every thing to power up using the power button on the front panel This is the goal but the same power button isnt working properly to turn the machine off So Im thinking that I dont have the cables hooked up correctly to the mobo I did read on Tiger direct where I purchased the case in a recent review that the cables arent color coded correctly So connection has been a problem I would of contacted the person that posted that but there is no way to do so I am not knowledgeable enough about pcs Torque Tower E & Case Mobo XFX 8200 Ultra ATX Mid to figure this out with out possibly XFX 8200 Mobo & Ultra E Torque ATX Mid Tower Case causing massive damage because this is my first build XFX 8200 Mobo & Ultra E Torque ATX Mid Tower Case and I was wondering if you can give me some assistance in getting my machine powered up correctly I hope someone can aid me in my quest to get my machine running correctly Im running a duel vid card http www tigerdirect com applicat EdpNo amp csid ITD amp body MAIN detailspecs http www tigerdirect com applications SearchTools item-details asp EdpNo amp CatId Thanks nbsp
I have the same case; the cables are actually pretty simple and can't really cause any kind of massive damage. Basically, your mobo's manual should have a diagram of where each front panel cable is attached to the pins on the motherboard. This includes the power switch, reset button, main LED, and Hard Disk LED. The cable heads and pins are usually labeled and it's just a matter of finding positive [+] and negative [-] connections. Again, your motherboard manual should have a diagram. You can really just screw around with the wires until everything works, the worst that could happen is that it doesn't...
I just installed window ME, I got a very small display in the centre dose anyone know how do i get the display full screen?
You probably need to install your video card or intergrated video drivers. Doing that should correct the issue.
Look in the device manager and see if you have any yellow ?'s or !'s..To access the device manager do the following:
1:From the Start menu, select Settings, and then Control Panel.
2: Double-click the System icon, and then click the Device Manager tab.
Alternatively, you can do the following:
1: On the desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, and select Properties.
2: Click the Device Manager tab.
System specs can be quite handy to have:
Model/Make of your computer
Motherboard model and make
RAM ammount and brand
Graphics card make and model (if you have a card and not an intergrated video controller)
Hard drive(s) make/model/size
hey out there i am having a little problem my laptop will play video clips like youtube clips in normal mode( when i say normal i mean when it is not in full screen mode.) but when i open full screen mode for the clip it will play for a few seconds then stop and revert back to normal mode. Ummm? could it be a driver. though i did update my drivers. But that didnt work and i rolled them back, and did a system restore to see if i could just get it to work normally. no luck. any help would be appreciated guys.
Update Flash Player to the latest version:
You may also need to change your resolution to the laptop's default setting 1024x768 ?
I ve combed through Google search results for an answer but haven t found anything that helps I m currently running two screens on an NVIDIA GeForce GT and have a few full screen games Warhammer Dawn of War Dark Crusade works fine a barrier appears most of the time that prevents the cursor moving to the second gaming Dual full screen monitors and screen so I can hit that one pixel column that activates the scroll over the map Half Life also works okay because the cursor is always centred and moving the mouse moves the screen instead However I pulled out Rise of Nations not too long ago no barrier The only way to fix it is to disable the second monitor Which is a hassle it s set up with Dual monitors and full screen gaming a heap of icons and a few widgets that need moving over first then moving back when I reenable it Oh well I don t play that game that often Though we recently got Spore which has a similar problem I m not worried that it can flick over to the other screen the problem is it won t move back Which means a minimise of the game then a restore Or I could go through and disable the second monitor Blegh Is there some sort of program that will force the barrier every time I run a full screen app or something I can set up that the mouse won t cross nbsp
There's an option through ntune to make sure you dont get those lag and flickers.
hello. My sister pulled the power cable from the back of the tower while her computer was on, now when i turn it on, the fan is abnormally loud. No image to the monitor what-so-ever. is there a fix to this? thank you =]
Sounds like some stuff got fried. It could be your Mobo. Isolating your hardware might be a good idea in figuring out what got fried. Do you have another graphics that you could swap for the one presently installed?

Hello I have an Emachines T with a POST, speed fans PC doesn't full at new videocard and sound card neither of which require a seperate power connector than their slot on the mobo THey were both in the machine for a few months when I PC doesn't POST, fans at full speed decided to update my BIOS I was updating my bios and everything appeared to have worked At the end it said quot success press f to reboot quot so I did Then the problem started When I rebooted the PC the computer did not post it only had all the fans CPU Main and Videocard going full blast and the hard drive made a little noise but nothing booted I reseated the CPU same thing I called Emachines tech support and decided that the bios process actually didn t work So I bought a replacement bios from an online vendor Biosman I gave them the BIOS that the tech support had emailed me I switched out the bios for the new one and the same process happened still-no post full fans and the hard drive warming up At that point I bought a new PC and got the Geek Squad to transfer the data over So now I have come here for a last gasp attempt to revive the POS I just read that the power supply could be the culprit How should I determine what part has become faulty Thanks in advance dead nbsp
Well when it boots up are you getting any signal on the screen?
Anyone know what is a good free full Mirc Script?
That has a website you can go to and download updates?
With Nice themes?
I like and use NoNameScript.
i just restored my computer with the disks it came with because of many problems, and when i finally got it back up the sound isn't working. the sound control in the taskbar isn't even there, and when i try to locate it it says that there are no active mixers available... and i am very confused as to what to do...
You require the Sound/Audio drivers for your model of computer and Windows version. You can search for this yourself at your manufactures support web site.
Please put your System Specs in your Profile
If you have a proprietory computer like Dell; HP; Acer etc, please manually write this in the mobo field (ie Dell Dimension 3100 - as an example)
Ok here s the deal I have gigs RAM Windows only reads of it I ve been told this is normal I have an nVidia GeForce GT Superclocked with megs GDDR RAM and the latest drivers I have install Windows full performing XP New potential at not a gig SATA GB s HDD and a GHz Dual Core AMD Athlon X CPU What s really bothering me is I just went back to XP from a long time with Vista which had it s quirks but I kinda liked it atleast it read all gigs of RAM I m trying to use my computer to it s full potential you can imagine with those specs it SHOULD be fast but it s just not up to par I don t know if it s just me I don t think it is because I m not the only one noticing it but it seems to take a lot longer to do anything Before Pre Vista XP installs and even with Vista folders displayed instantly now it takes up to a second to display a folder and it s contents This doesn t seem like much but I move around a lot and it adds up to a lot of waiting I used to be able to play Halo at FPS with max settings in x resolution now I can t play Halo at even FPS and I need to use FRAPS to record stuff sometimes at fps it drops to fps while recording and skips around It shouldn New Windows XP install not performing at full potential t be the disk access because I ve played the game enough that the relevant information should be resident in memory I just went through the process of isolating New Windows XP install not performing at full potential my computer and unistalling programs and I m defraggng too but it s not New Windows XP install not performing at full potential really helping I know I don t have a virus because I have a clean install of XP just a few days ago and AVG free version What else could be causing such a dramatic loss of performance It s really frustrating to have put almost into my computer and to have it crapping out this badly Does anyone have any suggestions maybe some tools that I can run to diagnose any performance hits Thank you Oh P S I make sure to kill any TSR programs and processes running that are not directly needed for what I m doing BEFORE I play Halo the only thing I keep running is FRAPS which uses approx megs of RAM and CPU at the moment Please help nbsp
I'd suggest taking out 2 Gig of Ram, and test again.
You may also want to run CCleaner (it does help sometimes)
And also confirm you have all the latest Xp drivers loaded including MS Security Updates
I have Gigs of DDR PC- RAM sticks of it are A-Data they advertise to run at mhz I believe this is them http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E The other are PNY that also advertise on the packaging to run at mhz I think this is them only mine have heat spreaders http www bestbuy com site olspage jsp skuId amp type product amp id There are problems one is that Windows XP Media Center x not speed full being and running RAM recognized, fully not so -bit is RAM not being fully recognized, and not running full speed only recognizing gigs in system properties The other thing is that when I run CPU-z it tells me that the RAM is only running at mhz average It reports the PNY sticks as running at mhz and the A-Data running at mhz Both however say they are capable of mhz Here is a picture of my mobo s RAM slots http claninfectionist com images misc untitled jpg RAM not being fully recognized, and not running full speed And one of the RAM installed http claninfectionist com images misc untitled jpg I just recently installed XP Media Center over Vista but Vista I had bit recognized all gigs though it also reported them running slower than Is there anything I can do anout this or should I just stop complaining that I m losing a few hundred megahertz Thank you in advance EDIT Here is a picture of all the parts in my computer I didn t have one of just the RAM modules but you can see them http claninfectionist com images misc untitled jpg nbsp
You might not have anything wrong. 32 bit operating systems, whether XP or Vista, will not recognize the full 4GB of RAM, a 64 bit OS will. The 3.25GB is about right.
Keep in mind your RAM is DDR2. DDR is double data rate so it will be reported in the BIOS and CPU-Z at about half of its rated speed.
