Help please.. I would like to change my old Pentium 1 to a pentium 2 chip is this just a straight swap over job or do I have to mess around with the bios?????
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
You also have to replace the motherboard! The P1 and P2 are totally different chips, and they are not pin compatible. The P2 was usually a slot mounted affair, at least the ones I've used are.https://forums.techguy.org/threads/changing-my-processor-chip.134133/
Hello the unknowing one again I am still upgrading bit by bit my older PC The mobo is a Gigabyte IXE about or so years old I added in a new video card and now I m looking at the processor Gigabyte says the max processor is either an AMD Athlon G FSB or an AMD Duron G FSB http www giga-byte com Motherboard Support CPUSupportList CPUSupportList GA- IXE htm I know that Athlons are supposed to be better performing that the Durons However the only Athlon G I found was on pricewatch and was Local stores have the G Duron but dont carry the Athlon anyways probably gonna go with the G Duron My question is how difficult is it to change a processor I chip Changing a processor was told that its Changing a processor chip as simple as pop old chip out put new chip in but I m always very weary when someone says its simple Any input guides you can recommend Thanks again nbsp
I would check ww.Ebay.com for that processor, use this link Ebay 1.4Ghz Athlons . I got an Athlon 1.4Ghz 266Mhz FSB for $42 there about 6 months ago. You would have to be really lucky to find that processor online anywhere else for under $100. Installing a processor is very easy but you have to be careful with the pins on it and when you reinstall the heatsink on it. It literaly is Plug-n-Play. Make sure you use some kind of thermal paste like Artic Silver on top of the processor between it and the heatsink.
P.S. Dont get the Duron, even though its 1.3Ghz your 900Mhz Athlon still outperforms it in most things like games.:grinthumb Also, if a 266Mhz FSB one is cheaper to get you should be able to use that but it will just run at 200Mhz FSB on your motherboard, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am trying to find out if you can change a pentium processor chip in my Dell Dimension XPS 700r it has a P3 900mhz is there anyway I could make it faster I am at max memory
You can run this reputable online check http://www.powerleap.com/downloads/exe/InSPECS.exe
You must allow full access if prompted
This is Not spyware or anything like that, it basically tells you all that is on your system. and then if you click the processor (CPU) on LHS it will tell you what the maximum CPU is that you can install.
You can also check your Ram and so forth
Please let me know the outcome of this online hardware (quick) scan.
I was just wondering if it's possible to change from award bios to ami without changing the actual chip?
I have to say that I seriously doubt it, but I do not know for sure. I don't even know how you would go about that. I mean you need the bios to boot up and run your computer so how can you simply override all that information. Your best bet is to take a blank chip and program it with the new AMI bios and use it.
I'm sure other people know more about this than I do, but this is just my opinion. Just curious, but why exactly would you want to do this???
I bought Dell Dimension 4600 with P4 2.4Ghz and wanted upgrade to 3.0Ghz or higher. I want to make sure that I am buying a right CPU.
The spec said I can upgrade to 3.0Ghz/800FSB, but according to user win2kpro on this thread, he said my motherboard is D865PESO, so I went to the Intel website and find this page.
The page says that it supports Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading Technology† , so I follow the link which show that the motherboard supports 3.20 - 3.46Ghz/ 800FSB.
Since Dell said supports upto 3.0Ghz, my question is can I upgrade to P4 Extreme Edition 3.46Ghz?
AMD is poised to make quite a comeback if a leaked slide proves accurate. The slide in question details AMD's Zen core APU and Greenland HBM memory-powered graphics and arrives courtesy of Fudzilla.
This chip looks amazing, and is certainly enough for AMD to make a huge comeback. I really hope this is true.

i want to update my processor go from a dual core to a quad core is that possible?
hey everyone, im changing my processor but i need a bit of help!
currently my processor is a:-
CPU Speed : 2.66GHz
Bus Speed: 533MHz
L2 cache speed: 512kb
this is what i am planning to change to:
socket 478 (obviously )
cpu speed: 3.20GHz
Bus Speed: 800Mhz
L2 cache speed 1MB
however, this is what i am worried about.. ive read that To obtain the FSB of your Processor, a compatible motherboard that can support the Bus speed must be used and this is what it says in my mainboard manual:-
"supports socket 478 for P4/celeron processors with 400/533MHz"
"Core Frequency from 1.8GHZ to 2.8GHz and up"
for quote number 1.. does it mean i wont be able to get a bus speed of 800MHz as my motherboard can only support up to 533MHz ?
for quote number 2.. will i be able to get 3.2GHz from this new processor?
thanks in advance!
I'm looking to change my processor from an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ to an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ (Socket 939). I don't intend to change from the current cooling arrangement, but am not sure about the thermal compound. When changing the processor, will I need to get and apply new thermal compound?
I currently have a P-II 266mhz processor. I recieved a P-III 500 mhz processor from a buddy. Can I use this on my Existing board with out frying my computer?

I've got a very good condition Inspiron 1100 that came with a Celeron Chip. I would like to see how possible it is to find a Pentium or Pentium-Like Chip and switch it out with the current slower Celeron.
I know you might need some technical info about the laptop so what should I post that might help to see if it is something that might make it a better performing machine? I'm not really looking to get a new laptop since I have one from my company, but the personal one is just slow and lags. I've had worked with other friends when doing it to a desktop but not a laptop.
Thanks for the help.
I have noticed that my processor, which is a 850 Mhz has been detected lately as a 700 Mhz. Why is this?
Is this the new value? What can I do?? Please help!!

I use MS Windows 2000.
As the title says, I wanna change my motherboard processor, and insert an SSD aswell while keeping the old harddrive.
Was wondering if I need to perfom a new reinstall on windows or if I can just transfer windows itself to the SSD and then just keep going. I was also wondering if my windows install will messup if I insert my new motherboard due to new BIOS.
Its always a good idea to fresh install when changing motherboards. A fresh install will minimize any issues that could arise from different hardware configurations. I've also heard that Windows setup detects an SSD and optimizes Windows for use with the SSD.
You should also keep in mind, an OEM license for Windows is not be transferable to a new motherboard. The motherboard is the one component that constitutes a new machine. OEM installs are bound to the motherboard they are activated on.
Hi. I have problems with my printing jobs. My topic is
I'm thinking about to change the print processor who actually is HPPRN05 and put in a WinPrint. Do I have to save any system information before? is there any danger to change the printer processor of a TCP/IP network printer connected with another one to the same HPJetDirect?. Thanks

Hi I have an OEM version of Win Pro x DVD I Win License - Motherboard 7 Changing Processor OEM & purchased from Newegg in I installed it Win 7 OEM License - Changing Motherboard & Processor on my Intel DX SO i - which I subsequently upgraded the processor to i - I plan to upgrade my motherboard and processor again to an Intel DX SO i - x I'm also going to replace my Seagate Barracuda GB SATA hdds presently in Intel RST RAID which are out of warranty -year with two new -year warranty Seagate Constellation TB SATA hdds configured in a Marvell RAID mirror I'll use the Barracuda Intel RST RAID volume as my back-up disk Will I have MS license issues when I do a clean install of my OEM Win onto the upgraded system I'm wondering if I'll have activation problems I've changed the motherboard before but with the same processor and model motherboard and there didn't seem to be an issue I've done this with an OEM copy of Win XP in the past and didn't have any issues I'm not installing the same OS product key on more than one system I'm just moving or reinstalling the OS to an upgraded hardware system Regards
If you change the motherboard to a different model or manufacturer technically the OEM version cannot be activated as it is tied to the motherboard. However, I know Microsoft has made some exceptions.
I'm facing the same thing right now. I suspect a problem with my motherboard. I have another to replace it but it is a different vendor and I'm afraid Microsoft will not activate it. I've considered an "anytime upgrade" from Home to Pro version but I don't know if that will change the OEM version into a full version. So, I'm stuck.
XP was different and the process was much more lenient.
I will be moving to an X38 chipset and a 45nm quad core soon from my E6600 and P965 chipset. Will I need to re-install Vista Ultimate x64?
I am going to change my motherboard, processor and RAM. However, I will be using the same HDD. Is it necessary to re-install the OS after I have set up the rig? I am using the drivers that come with Windows 8, so driver compatibility ought not to be a problem.
Thanks in advance!
Short answer--New Motherboard=New License Key if you have an OEM OS version. Sorry
The reason is your license key is embedded in your BIOS, and the BIOS is embedded with the MOBO.
If you paid for a license key separately then you can use the OS with the new MOBO but you should do a clean install because all the drivers will be wrong and it probably won't even boot.
You could try to put the drive as-is into the new machine, boot off the Win8 installation media, and do a repair install. This will search for drivers that match the current hardware
1) Clone the drive first so that, in case of damage, you still have your data.
2) You will probably have to phone Microsoft to re-activate the copy of the OS. They've been decent about it with others.
3) If it works, immediately go to the Microsoft Update site and see what updates are needed for the drivers that you just installed
I m looking for an ultraportable laptop for mostly simple tasks but I will also need it Solved: a processor Changing laptop out for more taxing software like photoshop and premiere pro I ve found this Asus UL A-X that will fulfill most Solved: Changing out a laptop processor of my requirements gb of ram under lbs long - hrs battery life but it has a meager Ghz processor The current processor in the machine is the su and I would like to replace that with something like the sl for the extra power I am wondering firstly if it would be physically possible to open the laptop and replace the processor because I have never worked on a laptop before Secondly I am wondering how drastic the effect would be on the hours of advertised battery life I would like it to run for at least hours Lastly would the machine be able to handle the extra heat given off In my search for a laptop this Asus with a faster processor is the best match I can come up with to meet my demanding requirements Of course I would ideally like to purchase a laptop without having to replace parts so any suggestions for a completely different laptop would be even more appreciated than an answer to my processor questions If this isn t possible I think I m going to compromise on the weight for the lb macbook pro quot because it otherwise meets my requirements despite my preference for the windows OS I m lost so thanks for any help you can provide nbsp
Laptops have limited upgradeability, and the processor is an area that generally shouldn't be upgraded. Laptops will only support a small set of processor upgrades. If you think you can buy a low-end laptop and pop in a high-end processor, you're seriously mistaken. The board won't handle it. The chassis won't handle it. "Opening" a laptop involves removing dozens of tiny screws of all different sizes and removing many small, fragile, pieces of plastic. Most people lose or damage at least one part when disassembling a laptop. And of course doing so completely voids the warranty, so if you break something, you're out the cost to replace or repair it.
Buy a laptop that actually meets your needs.
Hi there I have the hp 15-r031si with 2gb ram and I want to speed up the computer. Current system is a Pent. 2 350...I now have a better Mobo(Abit BF6) and CPU(P3 500) already with it's own case and tested.
I have 2 years+ worth of stuff on the HDD, that I do not wish to re-install and/or download.
What steps should I do 1st? Should I just put my HDD(Seagate 30G), and (AGP)GeForce 2 video card in 1st, let Wiondows(98) "find them" and go from there, or what?
Someone "told me" that I could just take every peripheral and connect them to the new(er) mobo and Windows would "find the new(er) mobo" and "take care of the rest".
What are my best choices...without reformatting?
I am thinking about helping my friend install a new motherboard and processor while keeping all of the other components he has. I read on another board that you can go the Device Manager and uninstall everything, swap the board and processor, and then when you boot install the correct drivers.
Is this possible? I don't know if his install of XP is OEM or not. If it is, I think a reformat would be necessary with a non-OEM XP disc.
mine worked fine when i changed the motherboard and cpu but eventually after backing up my data, i did do a clean installation just to get the kinks out. you dont have to but it is recommended so you can get the most out of your hardware. i did mine backwards for some strange reason, best way would be to backup now and then change the hardware and reinstall.
note my cpu stayed a amd
I have a Compaq Presario T P Socket here that I am having trouble putting a processor into It came originally with a -MHz that died I put a into it and I got an error on boot that I needed a BIOS update Processor Compaq 8000T Presario Changing in to support the new clocking and I had to press F to continue the boot After that everything worked fine The quot Press F to Continue quot message was annoying so I removed that processor and returned it I later installed a BIOS update and inserted a -MHz The F message is Changing Processor in Compaq Presario 8000T now gone but the is running at MHz Compaq is no help as I didn t get the processor from them The processors aren t available at a reasonable price they are rare and seem to all cost more than a and I just can t seem to bring myself to pay that premium for the chip I considered a -MHz processor but with the problems Changing Processor in Compaq Presario 8000T I ve had with the I m not sure I want to spend over a hundred dollars and find more problems A processor would solve the problem but I can t find them priced reasonably Does anyone here have any suggestions nbsp
Never mind. I found a 2200 at a reasonable price at Spartan Technologies for about $130.
Could anyone show me the steps of changing cpu processor in Acer Aspire 5750-6493?
I have a Study Guide with questions in Microsoft Works Word Processor and I wanted to fill in the answers in a different font and color. But every time I click the question I want to answer, it automatically changes to the font and color of the question. So I have to type the answers and then highlight it and change the font and color manually. I have a ton of questions to answer and it is getting to be really time consuming to have to go back and change them all manually. Is there a way to set the font and color to be locked and never change even if I click a word or line that has a different font and color?
Just like Word, each area can have its own font and other settings.
You are going to have to put up with this, as the author did not set up the study guide to be used in this manner.

I m a little confused about what s going on with my PC Basically recently processor Changing extreme it :S Dell noise temps. state Inspiron 530 and fan reduces my Dell Inspiron Vista Home has been extremely noisy When I m just on the desktop there is almost no noise the fans are silent However when I play almost any game visit a site such as google maps open Microsoft Outbox or almost any other program that is a little bit tough on the system resources the fan noise increases from silent to the noisiest it could possibly be in a matter of seconds It almost seems like it s all or nothing with the fan noise it either makes no noise at all or makes a horrendous noise Dell Inspiron 530 extreme fan noise and temps. Changing processor state reduces it :S when I run just about any program All these programs never before caused Dell Inspiron 530 extreme fan noise and temps. Changing processor state reduces it :S the fan to make such a loud noise I decided to use SpeedFan to try and work out the problem There are some unusual things I have observed When I open a simple java browser game Runescape in this case the Temp reaches C This is simply on the start screen not playing the game at all However this is what really confuses me and I m sure you can make sense of it When I go to the quot Power Options quot in Control Panel click quot Change plan settings quot and go to the quot Processor power management quot section it gives me the option to change the quot Maximum processor state quot This was previously at so I changed it to and changed the quot Mininum processor state quot to Magically the sound dissappeared The Runescape start screen gave me very little fan noise and there was no noticable difference to the performance of the game If anything it ran smoother Even though Vista told me my performance should now be reduced And whats more Speedfan tells me the Temp is at a mere C So changing these settings caused a reduction of C and gave me almost silent fans from deafening ones What is going on S So I now don t have the crazy fan noise but I don t understand why I had to change the processor state options to reduce it I ve had this PC for years with it on for both min and max processor state and it has previously been fine no excessive noise This is a good temporary fix but I m worried there may be something wrong with my processor like it is reading the temperatures wrong or for some reason just pushing the fan to go fast unnecessarily Also I don t even understand what I have changed and is it safe to run the PC on these lowered settings The control panel tells me that from reducing the processor state I should now have reduced performance but I don t see any Or is this just because I am not running the really intense programs that require the full processor I d really appreciate any advice help as I m just really confused right now and not sure if I should replace the fan power source or if it s something more serious like with the processor Thanks nbsp
quick question have you tried opening up your pc and looking inside the fan and cleaning it out? that can sometimes be a cause of nosiy fans try using a vacumme cleaner and cleaning out the fan if that doesnt help then im not to sure what is wrong with it
Yesterday I bought a new mother board for my PC my Processor model is AMD Athlon II X3 440 Triple Core Processor, but after changing Mother Board in system information it's showing my Processor as AMD Phenom II 4 B40 four core processor. I don't know why it is showing like this. Is this dangerous for my hardware? I used AM2N68-AM PLUS before and now I changed M5A78L-M LX. Except this every thing else is perfect.
It's not dangerous, but I believe you can get it to display correctly. All you have to do is open Device Manager, right-click each entry for the CPU and choose Uninstall. When you're finished, reboot and then open Device Manager up when it's done rebooting and check the CPU again. It should be showing up correctly after that, but if not then we'll go from there.http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/276482-processor-info-showing-wrongly-system-info-after-changing-mb.html

I recently upgraded to a HP,Media Center editon pc, Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 3800+2.4 GHz Processor.
When trying to install Photoshop Album 1.0, I receive this message, "This operating system is not supported by Adobe Photoshop Album. We support Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 , XP Intel Pentium III or 4 processor".
Could my problem with installation be the Athlon processor? When purchasing this computer, our salesman convinced us that the Athlon was just as good as the Pentinum Processor. Any thoughts on this? My computer is less than a week old and having serious thoughts about returning it. I have had problems with other installations. Am I to expect more problems with software and the Athlon processor. Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated. I am getting desperate for advice about the processor.
What the message is telling you is that Windows Media Center Edition 2005 is not one of the operating systems that Adobe Photoshop Album 1.0 supports. It has nothing to do with whether an Intel processor or an AMD processor is installed. I checked the system requirements for the newer version 2.0, and it also is not supported by Windows MCE 2005.
By the way, Adobe Photoshop Album 1.0 has a 13.5 MB patch for it and will upgrade it to version 1.0.1. You can get it from here.

Can any body tell me the main diff between the core 2 duo processor and core 2 duo processor with centrino.
In a word nothing, the centrino branding does not refer to any specific additions to the processor, it is simply a label that is attached to laptops which use intel branded processor, integrated graphics and wireless chips.
Centrino is more of a marketing tool that Intel use to boost sales of their graphics and wireless chips, so you can pretty much ignore it
I need to order a new desktop for my office to replace a 3 year old machine that runs at 3.2 Ghz. The new machines that Dell offers only has this option:
Intel® Core™2 Extreme QX6700 (8MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1066 FSB)
I don't think there is a standard measuring stick that is used to compare all the processor speeds that I can find or understand. I work with CAD programs that use up a lot of resources and I typically get the fastest available and max the RAM. With all the latest software that I have to install, I need the new machines to run faster than the ones they replace.
Can anyone tell me how this 2.66GHz processor compares to my current machine? I don't have the exact specs for it, this is what it lists on the dell support site for my system - PROCESSOR, 80532K, 3.2GHZ, 1M, 533, M0.
Okay.. here is one of those stupid simple things I never had to do before and can't figure out how to do it.. I know it's basic.. but .. I self taught so my training skipped around a lot.. sorry!
Basically I did a graph for a yearly set of values, not yet filled in.
My boss wants these charts to show percentages through 100% even blank, but it keeps defaulting to 0.something ranges.
For the life of me I cannot remember how to do this and on my search of the site was harry in trying to figure out a decent search range. Any help is most sincerely appreciated. I have a feeling it wil be a smack my head kind of thing.
I want to build a new system, and I was wondering just what the differences between a sever processor and a desktop processor are.
Would I see gaming performance decrease by using a Quad Server Core or a Quad Desktop Core?
I wanted to build a dual socket server core and have 8 physical cores.
I dont think any games are designed to take advantage of a dual socket setup. Windows Server OS's are designed to take advantage of dual socket setups. Some newer games are coming out which take advantage of single socket dual or quad core setups on desktops. A server based PC would not gain any performance for games IMO. You are better off investing the extra $ in a good video card.
ok so if you dont have a TPM chip...you can use a key
according to ms
You can also implement BitLocker without a TPM chip. When implemented in this
manner there is no startup integrity check. A key is stored on a removable USB memory
device, which must be present and supported by the computer’s BIOS each time
the computer starts up. After the computer has successfully started, the removable
USB memory device can be removed and should then be stored in a secure location.
and if the key fails???
Then you restore your data from backup.
If you want to use BitLocker and don't want to use a flash drive, buy a computer or motherboard that supports TPM.
Or use TrueCrypt.
Or are you looking for the answer you wish were true? If the flash drive weren't required, then there would be no security. You can't have it both ways.
hi i am installing a driver on a friends comp a dell inspiron 537st as the graphics driver is missing i put the intell driver on it but would not work do i need a chipset file 1st ??thanks in advance xx
You guys have always come thru in the past, and I really need you now.
I built my WinXP machine originally in 2002. It's been pretty much running 24/7 since, running a web radio station. I shut it down last week as we moved across country. Upon arriving I set up the machine. Plugging it in I get a green light on the mother board and my CPU fan spins momentarily. But when I try powering it up I get no response. No power light on the front, no activity from hard drives, no error beeps, nothing. I even tried two backup power supplies with the same results. I checked all the wires to the power switch and power lights, all are connected and fine. A friend of mine suggested my CPU chip could have died. It's an older Intel Celeron chip from 2002. Any thoughts?
Does the Thinkpad Yoga 14 have a TPM chip built into it? I do not see any references to it in the hardware maintenance manual, which is the closest hardware related document I could find for this laptop. I do not see any option in the BIOS to enable a TPM or security chip etc. The tpm.msc snapin doesn't show a TPM in Windows (which I assumed was because it wasn't enabled in the BIOS). When I was buying this laptop online, the online sales agent told me that this laptop has a TPM chip in it. He said that ALL Thinkpad laptops have a TPM chip in them. I bought this laptop a year ago for solely this reason. Thanks in advance.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/TPM-chip/td-p/3329591
I own an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe, and according to the ASUS web site my board can take up to either of the following processors: Athlon XP 3000+(333 FSB) Athlon XP 3200+(400 FSB) I am currently using an Athlon XP 2600+ (333 FSB)and the memory I have installed is Corsair 1GB DDR XMS2700 TwinX (2x512MB) Platinum CAS2. Now the thing is, if I buy the 3000+ chip everything should be fine because it has a FSB of 333 which is the same as my current chip. But if I bought the 3200+ 400 FSB would I have any kind of bottleneck problem? I haven`t priced these chips yet, but I would like to know if there would be an obvious performance difference between the two?
Hi I had a thread here which concerned games not working correctly with a new graphics card turns out I was just expecting too much from my pentium cpu ghz So my question is what could I do to improve the performance without spending to do it Would it be worth buying a pentium D or as I have read would a new a to I get new Do PC have or chip..ty that not improve the gaming situation This is from the manufactures homepage The Foxconn RC MA-RS motherboard is compatible with the following CPUs Pentium xx series J J J J Pentium xx series J J J J J Pentium xx series Pentium xx EE series Ghz EE Pentium xx series Pentium EE Series Ghz System Memory The motherboard supports the following memory configuration Supports DDR MHz and MHz SDRAM memory modules Accommodates two V DDR -pin single channel un-buffered DIMM Do I have to get a new PC or a new chip..ty sockets Each slot supports up to GB with a total maximum capacity of GB As you can see the mobo doesn t support core duo so to upgrade I would have to buy the new chip motherboard and then since the o s came pre-installed XP and I only have Do I have to get a new PC or a new chip..ty the recovery disk I would have to buy a new o s as well Didn t want to go to vista yet Anyone know of a good chip to put on the motherboard I have Thanks nbsp
I have decided to build a new pc and have a question for all of you. I am going to go with one of these two choices and was wondering which chipset you would recomend. The SIS645 chipset or the VIA P4X400 I will be running a P4 2.53 with 533mhz front side bus, 512mb of pc2700 memory, geforce4Ti4200, and a maxtor 60gb with Ultra ATA133. The two boards I am choosing from are the Soyo "SY-P4S Dragon Ultra" or the "SY-P4X400 Dragon Ultra Platinum Edition". I can get a better deal on the "SY-P4S" and it handles what I want to install, But was concerned in the chipsets mainly. Which would you recomend?
Thanks and hope to see your replies
If there is the choice in between SIS and VIA, so I wouldn't think to much about that and take the VIA (too many problems with SIS so far).
I originally made one account with admin rights on my PC in June.
I added a standard account for my dad last week, but the only way I could customize the desktop and theme for him with larger fonts, non-Aero theme, fewer desktop icons, etc was to make his account an admin account also. Otherwise when I tried to open the Control Panel to customize things, I only got error messages saying stuff along the lines of "this page was unable to load". I also had broken shortcut images (generic Windows icons, no arrows) until I made it an admin account.
Now that I've made all the customizations I want to his desktop and theme, will removing admin rights and downgrading his account to a standard one screw up the customizations? Can I switch it back and forth if I wish to make additional changes or customizations in the future?
Okay, I guess I can answer my own question.
Switching an Administrator account to a Standard account does screw up icons in Computer - it makes them vanish, actually - but not those on the Desktop.

I have a 2 mo. old PCChips M861G w/ an Athlon 3700 which has suddenly died. System will not start up no matter what - no post, no beeps, no fan movement, nothing. I have tried everything - swap power supplies, disconnected everything, reset the CMOS, jumped the power switch pins, remove memory, nothing does anything. I can only assume that either the board or the chip has fried.
Is there anyway to determine which of these is bad? Unfortunately, I do not have another board or chip that I can use to test either of these components.
Thanks in advance to all that respond.
Using another board is the only real way to know. But its much more common for a motherboard to die then a processor, especially the super low end PCChips and ECS boards.
AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1024mb RAM, Nvidia 7900gt, win xp.
I have played many games on this pc. But while I was playing a game, suddenly there was this message in a blue screen: windows encountered an error, and then auto restart. after restart, sound did not work anymore. When I shut down the pc, and turn it on again, sound did work again. But when I start the pc, there is always this message: "Chip-fan failed or is too slow".
And when playing any game, after about 15 minutes, the pc gets the same error and auto restart again.
Well a computer friend of mine has a tower just like mine, and she says that the chip is fried. I dont know what this means, only that she wants to take a sledgehammer to it. Please help?
P.S. Is there any way to do any sort of piggybacking with a different type of PC, so that she can get the personal info off of the old harddrive?

I plan to change my mobo pretty soon and get a AMD dual-core,the mobo is a ASUS A8N-VM CSM-EAYGZ which i have been told is very good, any recommendations as to what size chip and cost?, i have £300 to splash on one.
Any advice welcome.
For that much I'd go with the amd64 4400+ dualcore, due to the fact that it has 1mb of cache for each processor while the 4600+ only has 512kb for each processor, the extra does make a difference in how the processor will perform. It should be ~270 pounds without a VAT tax (so with it, it'd be about 310 or so, assuming my math and a ~15% vat isn't way out there)
It's been a while since I've visited england.
I have a backup system, an old PB Platinum Pro 755. I pulled the HD to install Win98 on it, because the woman I got it from said it didn't work (read paid $50). When I boot it up, it checks memory, finds drives, then says checking ROM chip, then asks for Password 1, Password 2, Password 3. I cannot tell which ROM it would be. The rest of the system is fine; I cannot find any way around the passwords, as it locks up the system. Anyone with ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated.
It is a PB Platinum Pro 775, 2.5G HD, running at 200 mHz on PII chip, model number A960-TWR.
Contact me at [email protected] with ideas and solutions other than throwing it out
Restart in safe mode and go into "Search for files or folders" And type into the search... "*.pwl".
Any file that comes up... make the ".pwl" extention ".old"
can anyone help me find cif single chip for my webcam
See How to identify your webcam (and then find its driver)

hi i wanna upgrade my ram memory. my current ram is 2.75gb with 2gb chips one 512mb and one 256mb. i bought a 1024mb ult31664 and replaced the 512mb chip and after i turned it on it wouldn't boot up past the boot screen. i have a compaq SR1630NX running windows 7 ultimate 64bit. is my new ram chip messed up i also got it of ebay
1 way to check if the ram is bad is to remove ALL sticks then insert 1, boot the machine, if it works then switch off and try another stick. Also (and a silly question but...), is the ram the correct specification for your mainboard? If the timings (an other details) aren't exactly what your board is designed for then you will experience issues untill it's replaced with a correct part
hi! i lost my cd for my webcam. can anybody send me the cif single chip driver? my email is [email protected] thanks
wrong forum, I'll move it
not a very good first post, read the link in my signature
googling the name of your webcam and the word driver would have given you much much better results
no way to send you anything because you didn't give any details, and giving out an email address on a public forum would have been stupid
lol you edited to put your address. ok, I wouldn't have done that though. please read the link in my signature, at least you edited to add that rather than posting a reply.
Looking at building new system, lookinng at AMD 64 cpus. was looking through NewEgg and couldn't figure out the difference between these two:
only difference is that one has a 1Ghz FSB and the other has it "integrated into chip." what is that, and is it worth the extra 20 or so dollars?
what does anyone recommend? is there a significant difference between the 3000, 3200, 3500? what could i safely OC these to?
Its a later core in the Venice.
As always, Google will tell you everything you want to know.
I have an HP Business Inkjet 2200 and have not used it much because of the excessive cost of buying ink cartridges.
A cartridge that was 1/2-3/4 full last week has somehow magically become "empty" even though the printer has not been used since then.
I am thoroughly disgusted with HP because this little "secret" was not revealed when I bought the printer. If I had known, I would not have bought it nor will I ever buy another HP product.
They abide by that great American rule of business. Sell as little as possible and charge as much as possible.
I do not want to refill cartridges but want to revive this cartridge and also use an unopened on that cost $30 but expired in 2004.
Does anyone have any experience with a resetter for the number 10 HP cartridge? If so, where is a good place to buy one?
I have a ASUS motherboard ( A7A 266-E ) with a 1011 bios and a 1700+ athlon.
I have been told i need the 1012 bios if i want to put a faster cpu in.
I dont want to flash the bios as with my luck i would end up with a pile of scrap so i was wondering if i can buy a bios chip with the updated bios on it and install it myself. ( the bios can be taken out of the mobo )
I have looked on the website but the u.k. one has not been finished and i cannot get the others to work.
Has anyone here done this upgrade and has anyone got any suppliers i could contact ?
can a pentium3 coppermine flipchip be damaged by trying to use it in a ppga socket?
but it depends.
if you only half heartedly tried to make it fit, prolly not.
but if you pulled a vesselle, and crammed it in, because you were positive that's where it went, you might be able to damage it. the chip might still be okay, but you'da messed up the connection so the mobo might be useless.
if you pulled a double vesselle, and convinced yourself it was in place and then actually turned your machine on, then you mighta hosed any number of additional things. but if you did that, you'd know it.
when i start my computer, i will get two errors:
Warning: Your Computer CPU Fan Fail or speed too low
Warning: Your Computer Chip Fan Fail or speed too low
it says i can simply turn it off, but my computer is running slower than usual so im assuming this is the cause, i have done scans for virus, spyware, vundo, and malware, so this is the only thing i can think could be the problem.
any help is greatly apreciated.
I reinstalled my operating system on an hp pavilion a620n. Everything is working great its just when I go to device manager I see 2 things with yellow exclamations. CIF Single Chip and PCI Simple Communications Controller. Here are the details...

PCI Simple Communications Controller - PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1040&SUBSYS_10008086&REV_00\3&61AAA01&0&50
I tried to download the driver on the hp site Driver - Modem (‏1) Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem Driver Update
but I get a message saying Please install the driver through device manager. And have 5 steps to follow to do so...
but the first one says click the + (plus) sign next to modems In device manager but I do not see modems anywhere
in device manager.

I have a 5 year old IBM computer that I would like to upgrade it's CPU chip. I obtained the following information on my computer using the Belarc Advisor program.
Processor: P-3 600 MHz, 32 kbytes primary cache, 256 kbytes secondary cache.
Computer Model No: IBM, Net Vista all in one, 2179750.
System Board: MITAC LUXOR R01.
Bus Clock: 133 MHz.
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc., PRKT59AUS.
I have searched IBM web sites looking for information. The only site that I
implies that I can upgrade to a P-3 800, 866, 933 Mhz or 1.0 Ghz processor.
However, I have gone to a few computer repair stores and everyone has told
me to buy a new computer. They have all said that computer makers always install the fastest CPU chip that the system board can support.
Any thoughts and suggestions would be welcomed.
I have been O/Cing my laptop (g6-1d60us) and I have reached as much performance increase as I am going to get (in games) with just O/Cing my CPU. I have looked for a way to O/C my on die "GPU" through amd overdrive, no such thing. CCC only works with dedicated cards. Dried MSI afterburner, tells me my clocks but can't change them, and for Saphire trixx It only shows me my voltage. Does anyone have any ideas?
I ordered a new BIOS chip to replace what I think is a corrupt one. When the new chip and new battery arrives, do I simply pop them into place and boot? I have been researching my BIOS chip problem on your forum and after an unsuccessful flash, I ordered a new chip.
I haven't been able to find the procedure for installing a new chip. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Well I have never attempted changing a bios chip but here is a site I found when I googled "replace bios chip"
EDIT: here is another site http://www.badflash.com/findbios.htm
looks like you need to research how your chip is set up, and if it were me I would look into getting the proper tools for the kind of setup you have. (a couple are listed on that site). There may even be a guide for doing it with your specific brand of MB / BIOs chip.
List your system specs as there are probably more than a few people here that have done this in the past that would be willing to help you out.
Yea so I screwed up pretty bad and flashed my mobo (nf7-s 2.0) with the wrong damn bios file. I used a bios for an nf7-s2 and now my computer barely works. I cannot flash back to a correct BIOS because of a "write protection" issue so I need to get a new chip for my board. Does anyone know of a good place to get one? I've looked around a little but I can't find a place. I need a PCC32 type or whatever it is; pheonix-award. All I know is that the chip is square and has 32 pins... Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
As far as i'm aware you cant buy separate bios chips you have to get a new motherboard, could be wrong but i have never come across any place online or on the high street that does it.
Have "HP DV6 6c50se" TPM chip ?
Have ''HP pavilion DV6 6C50SE" inbuilt TPM?
just put on some silver compound then had to redo it - i got some residue from the silver compound on the surrounding chips around the core. i cleaned out as much as i could with soft cloth but could only get so much off. comp hasnt been turned on for more than 30 minutes since i put in so i dont think i have damaged anything. am i put the cpu at risk or should i just forget about it. also what should i use to clean it - soft cloth or something else. much thanks.

I have an AsusTek P4B-LX board (Micro ATX).
I was overclocking it.
It has a stock default of 1.8 Ghz (i've done tests, and it isn't overclock, or underclocked).
well, i went ot over clock it.
but i can only seem to get up to 2.0 Ghz
My board supports 2.4 Ghz
but my CPU seems to have only a maximum of 2.0 Ghz
I even checked in Sandra2004. it says that the maximum speed of my CPU ius 2.0 Ghz, but that my board supports 2.4 Ghz.
am i just gonna have to settle for this overclock? or is there something i can do.
Cuz i can definatley go higher...my Tempurature issue is in tip-top-shape. im at 93F right now at 2.0 Ghz with my FSB at 4x111 (that's 444 Mhz it says in sandra) my Ram is also O/c'd from PC133 to PC148
It's probably your memory failing on the overclock. If it is pc133 most won't run higher than that. You could try upping your memory voltage .1 if your bios support it. Or get some HS ram I beleive it was called, but it only ran at like 150

Hey all. I want to get a new Pentium chip for my computer for christmas but I dunno what my current motherboard can handle, and am unsure of what my motherboard is.. I was wondering how can I find out what my current motherboard is and whats the max chip it can handle? Atm Im running a p4 1.7 but would like if poss to upgrade it to atleast a 2.8, also being that it is a dell would it be wise to think about upgrading the motherboard and internals? I don't have a great deal to spend as it would be all for christmas but would want a system which could easly handle 2days games I already have the graphics side sorted, its just the chip which lets the side down..
Any help is very much appreciated! Cheers all
Download CPU-Z & see what it says about your current CPU. If it is a Northwood based CPU (0.13 process & 512kb of L2 cache), you could upgrade to a 2.8ghz, provided you can still find one with a 100mhz FSB (400 quad pumped).
Take a screenshot of the CPU-Z window once you run it (ALT+PRINTSCREEN keys then paste it in mspaint or another image editing program) & then attach that image to your next post (remember to hit POST REPLY, you cannot attach files with the quick-reply feature).

Hi i was just wondering if anyone would be able to tell me what effect would it have on your PC if the bios chip failed?
The computer would not boot if it was a complete failure as it holds all the hardware information for the computer to know what to use. It would be like a motherboard failure.
My SoC PC-Camera doesnt work because i have a new computer but i lost my cd to install my webcam..
it sais i dont have any program for CIF Single Chip .. my webcams name is SoC PC-Camera can anyone help me find the thing i need so i can install my webcam and use it !!!

What I would like to know is, when I have the memory chip inside the reader and plugged into the computer, if I delete what I am viewing will it also delete it from the memory chip while it is plugged into the computer and will that space be useable again.?
Does anyone has illustration of where to find bios chip for c610
what are you attempting to do?
I have a new pc-chip mobo M810 that I am having big problems with. The memory and cpu are fine and power to it are fine, but when I try hooking the fdd and hdd to it, I lose power. I have to take them off and reseat the atx1 cable to get power back. Is it the mobo or me?
ps. This just started happening today. Yesterday, I could hook the fdd and hdd up and had power but the fdd would not come on. I went into cmos and made sure my settings were enabled and set to the correct drive types. This mobo will not let me boot from floppy!
I just recieved a used 512mb USB storage device, USB DISK 28X, and I can't find a CD to install it, what do I do?
I was trying to get my computers screen resolution up higher but it wouldn't go higher so I stumbled upon something called an adapter. On the menu it said that you could disable it and I did just that for some unknown reason, which was really stupid cause now my computer won't open up to the desk top. The operating system was windows XP home edition.
I was wondering how I could enable it again?

I am wondering if Intel is coming out with a new chip that will soon take the lead away from their latest ones? Does anyone know if they are actually coming out with a new chip, because this will determine when I get my computer?
It looks like they will be coming out with the Core 2 Quadro sometime yet this year. Check out this article: http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/09/10/four_cores_on_the_rampage/
I have an IBM Aptiva computer that someone sent to me but I am having problems with the video. I was losing parts of the screen and had lines all over the screen then it would freeze up. How can I tell if the video chip is bad on the mother board?
It may be that you have the wrong driver. Do you know what your video card is? You should probably boot up in safe mode and remove the video and monitor from device manager - then you would want to add the correct driver and make sure that the refresh is correct in display properties.
What type of monitor do you have? Many will take plug & Play.
Got a message as I was on the web after being stopped..."checksum error..check Bios chip, maybe bad"...How does one find this chip? i do not even know what it looks like as i search my MB. I have my MB diagram and do not see anything that is referred to the bios chip. My MB is P4800S Asus. In the meantime my desktop is 'dead'..all I get is a black screen and after about 30 secs it shuts itself off.
