PC won't boot up with power button; reset needed

Q: PC won't boot up with power button; reset needed

This problem has been happening for a few months now. When I try to turn on my computer using the power button located on the front of the case, I hear the fan running but my monitor's status light is just blinking; nothing on the screen. At that point I press the hard reset button on the front of the case and then it boots up normally, with the BIOS screen and everything. This happens about 90% of the time; the other 10% it boots up fine. How can I make it so my PC boots up properly when I press the power button?

I know I shut down the PC every night by going to the Start menu and choosing shut down. Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

See that the connector for the Power Switch is plugged in properly to the M/B pins.

If possible, replace the Power Supply with a working one to verify if it's a faulty PSU.

Hi, I am having a problem with booting up my computer. Everytime I turn the computer on, the HDD light comes on but the power light doesn't. When I press the reset button, everything starts working and the computer boots up. I think the problem might be the wires that get plugged into the motherboard. I don't know how to correctly install them and the manual that came with the motherboard doesn't help at all. I have a GA-7IXE4 motherboard with 1000 MHZ AMD and 256 MB RAM. If anybody could assist me with this problem, please do so. If anybody knows how the wires are suppose to be plugged into the motherboard correctly, please let me know because I think that might be the main problem. Thanks.

A:Reset button acts as power button

It shows the proper connections on page 15 of the manual.

Neither the power on or reset button need any polarity concerns when connecting, they are both use open/closed type switches.
http://ftp.gigabyte.com.tw/support/user_pdf/7ixe4_10_4.pdf

The reset connector is label RE, THE power connector is labeled PW.

Hello i have a HP G60-447Cl notebook that came with Vista Home Premium and I ran a hard drive test from the HP setup utility which failed at 82% which i was kind of expecting but when i hit <esc> to back out my screen froze where it was at and when i tried to hold the power/reset button to shut it down nothing happens. My battery is non-removable so that option is out. Short of just lettting the battery run out I have no clue how to turn it off. Does any one know of any thing that can help me or have a theory as to what caused this in the first place.

I bought new motherboard P8P67 LE, swopped it with my oldone. Managed to plug everything back, but my Power botton wouldnt power the system up and wouldnt power it down. Actually it burned out, when I tried to force power it down. I replaced it, but it wouldnt work anyway. Only way I can power my system up is by holding Memory OK button on my motherboard. Everything works OK afterwards. Reset function still works on the button though. Any ideas what to do and what could be the problem? Thanks

A:Power/Reset button

You will have to look at a diagram of what each connector is for. They vary a lot and just because 2 particular connectors on one board are for power or reset doesn't mean that the same ones will be used on a different board. Though the polarity doesn't matter for the switches, you have to make sure it is right for LED's or they won't work.

A:Problem Booting With Power Button/ Reset Works

You should have a setting in BIOS to give hard drives time to spin up. Look for "HDD delay" or something similar. You can also just disable quick startup, so the HD has time to spin up during the memory test.

A:Equium P300-16T - power button ribbon cable needed

It is very problematic to find such parts. With a little bit luck you can find such cable on eBay. Check it out.
P300 models in general have similar parts so you can also use such cable offered for Satellite P300 too.

Try another PSU maybe yours is faulty. You said after you pressed the reset button it worked, this could be because the first time you power on computer the PSU isn't Stabilising the voltages quick enough but when you restart it has had time to Stabilise the voltages.

Can't reboot Windows HP P - A week ago I had a screen freeze up while in Firefox unexpectedly I could not close it and it seemed as though the PC locked up I tried PC boot Power now button up froze, used can't to close, Ctrl Alt Delete but that didn't work either I left it for awhile hoping that it would just clear itself up but it didn't At that point I used the power button to shut the computer down I waited a few minutes then rebooted The boot began as I normal then switched to a black PC froze, used Power button to close, now can't boot up screen with the usual statement that the computer wasn't closed down properly the last time so chose the start up repair or normal startup I clicked start up repair and went through the usual repair process Nothing seemed unusual up to this point I've done this before When it supposedly finished the repair the computer attempted to reboot It got as far as the Starting Windows screen then it just stayed there It didn't continue any further The first time this happened I just left it alone and figured that for some reason it might be taking longer then usual after the start up repair But then the screen flipped back to the black screen with the message about my computer not having been closed properly the last time and once again giving me the two options to continue I then tried to continue by picking the start normally option It did the very same thing I went through this several times and finally used the power button again to shut the computer off I tried to boot again but this time into Safe Mode but that didn't work either I booted again and tried to enter the BIOS just to make sure the BIOS was still intact While the BIOS on this HP PC looks a little different from others I've seen I went through it and it all seemed to be fine so I closed out of it I also tried to revert to a restore point and while it performed that operation just fine it didn't solve the problem I haven't attempted anything further with it because this is a little over my head so I was hoping that somebody here might have had this happen to them and could offer me a solution This computer has been working perfectly up to this point so I must admit that I was a bit stunned when this happened I regularly run Norton security and also MalwareBytes and Glary Utilities for other maintenance I also keep all of my programs up to date I'd be surprised if I caught a bug but then nowadays anything is possible I suppose I could really use some help with this For the time being I am getting by with my backup computer I was hoping to upgrade the computer that won't boot to Windows when it is released on July th but I really need to get it up and running before I can do that Thank you message edited by casper

A:PC froze, used Power button to close, now can't boot up

The on-board diagnostics may not be as comprehensive as the drive fitness software and could have missed the problem--assuming it is with the hard drive. If you want to attempt a complete recovery/reset you may not need disks. There's a good chance there's a restore partition you can boot to directly. You'd need to check the manual to make sure.

Hey guys,
I just came back from college and my computer has been packed away in the closet for over 3 months. I plugged everything in today, and upon pressing the power button, the fans spin up and stay on, but the computer doesn't do anything more.
On the back of the computer, a red light that says CLR CMOS is on. The power LED's in the front are not on.

Also, it's an ASrock p67 extreme 4 mobo
Looking inside, their is a code that is displayed on the mobo "A3" and the Power and Reset lights are also lit up

Any help would be appreciated!

I push the power button and it lights and nothing happens...black screen. I push it again to turn it off, then I am constantly pushing the button on and off. After about ten minutes it will go right into the normal boot mode. Not sure why it is taking longer to get into this normal boot mode I have windows 7 and I have a Toshiba Satelite T 115-S1100. My machine runs as normal, all the fans are working. My PSU and Video Card is quite new, I upgraded them over a year ago. No problems since today my computer wont boot up.

My moniter is blank, there is no light on the keyboard, so Im assuming it has something to do with the MOBO. But the there is a GREEN LIGHT on in the MOBO

Already tried unplugging the Jumpers, the CMOS battery, RAM, the 4pin and 24pin connectors. Holding the Power button for 30-60 secs(with Power cord off)

I tried everything I could think of.

Any help Folks?

Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

A:[SOLVED] Button of (When I press sleep button) is not available in my Power option pr

Does the case actually have a separate Sleep Button? I suspect it's not even connected, as the motherboard manual doesn't show a connection for a Sleep Button, only a Power Button.
Windows Power Options won't list it, as it doesn't exist.

If you have a Sleep Button on the keyboard, it might not be listed in Power Options either. That would be up to the Driver software to add that option. You may have to use the software that came with the keyboard to configure the sleep button on the keyboard.

recently bought a Dell Inspiron 14 5459 on June 12, 2016 and first thing I noticed is that to turn on the laptop I need to press and hold down the power button at least for 3 seconds in order for the laptop to boot up, this seems strange, I brought up this issue at the Dell Store where I bought the laptop and the sales people there told me that they noticed this in most Inspiron models.  Is this normal?

A:Windows 7 blank screen after sleep mode (unable to power off with power button)

Hello,

Is it possible that you can test with another compatible PSU? I would strongly suggest doing so.

Also try the following steps:
?Make sure that the (internal) speaker is connected to the motherboard
?Remove all memory and attempt to boot the PC
?You should get the no memory beep errors

If the Power Supply is in working order and no beeps are present then it can be indicative of a faulty motherboard.

For troubleshooting purposes it may be a good idea to remove the components from the case and bench test to rule out a short.

Toshiba Satellite A25-S2792 w/ XP & P4 has greenpower chord is lit and yellow battery light is flashing when power chord is plugged in. After I press the power button, the power chord light changes to yellow, begins flashing and the battery light goes out. Removing the battery gives the same results. Pressing and holding power button down for 20 seconds w/ battery out yields same result as well. Suggestions?

Memory can cause the problems you are having. Make sure the memory is seated , Then run a memory program such as memtest on It let it run for a while and see if it shows you any errors. Also check and make sure you are not having a overheating problem

My laptop will no longer turn on.  When the AC adapter is plugged in, the LED light is white indicating power is arriving at the laptop. However, nothing happens when I push the power button. Troubleshooting steps I have completed already include: Hard reset (several times including after each step below)Tried starting without the batteryRemoved all removable components and reseated themRemoved all removable components as well as bottom cover. Cleaned with compressed air. Put everything back.Nothing appears wrong and nothing happened between the last time it turned on and this time that I am aware of. The laptop is out of warranty, and I am pretty handy with computers. Is there anything that can be suggested short of a hardware replacement that would help get this resolved? TIA

A:Envy 15-j100 receives power from adapter but power button do...

@jthayne Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips, Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out  As I understand the computer receives power from adapter but power button does not work,Don't worry, please perform the below steps to resolve the issue: If the computer does not start, the LED lights do not glow, and the display is black, you can perform one or more of the following actions to resolve the no power issue:  1. Examine the adapter and power cord for physical damage2. Test the power from the AC wall outlet to the notebook connector3. Start computer using the battery only4. Check that the lid switch moves freely5. When you have completed the troubleshooting steps covered in this document, there should be power available to the computer. When you press the power button, the LEDs should glow, and you should hear the sounds of the fan and the hard drive spinning. * If the battery does not accept the charge or the notebook does not turn on without the AC adapter, contact HP to order a replacement battery. * If the LEDs do not glow, and there are no other indicators of power being available to the computer, contact HP for technical assistance in troubleshooting a potential problem with the AC power connection or the system board.* If the LEDs blink or the computer beeps, but it does not start, go to HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshooting LED Blink Codes or Beep Codes During Startup or Boot. * If the LEDs glow but the computer does not start on either battery or AC power, go to Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot. Eager to help, I hope you have a good day ahead, And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.Regards,

Just got a dell inspiron running vista home premium 64. works fine, except each morning the power button is blinking blue and unit has to be unplugged- mouse does not wake it, pressing power button kicks all the cooling fans into high gear, but nothing more. i suspect that this happens when unit goes into sleep or hibernate mode. under 'power plan', "dell recommended" is checked.

ideas?

thank-you for any expert advice that you can offer

A:Dell- blinking power button- vista power mgmt?

Is it a desktop or Laptop?

Dell desktops are well known to have dodgy power units (hardware) installed.

Have you tried a cold reboot to see what happens?.....If you continue to have power issues call the Dell customer support and they'll send you a new power supply (for desktop).

Not sure about the laptops though.

I have had my Hp laptop for 3 years now. It has been working perfectly, up until 2 weeks ago. It would not turn on when I clicked the power button. After clicking the power button, 15 minutes later I noticed it just came to life. Sometimes it doesn't turn on at all for days, but sometimes I click the power button and it boots within 15-30 minutes. When i click the power button, nothing happens at all for that duration. No fans, no lights nothing. The only light on is the power cord button that is always on when i plug it in. I did replace the power cord, and tried cleaning out the insides, it did nothing. Should i just replace the motherboard?

Ps. Hp pavilion dv6-6c43cl

Please let me know the difference between sleep button and power button

Is sleep button the one which will be on the keyboard?

On the CPU there will 2 buttons one will be to start the computer and another one to restart computer?

Can these buttons be used to work like to enter in sleep mode, hibernate mode etc(Making changes in power options in control panel)

I'm having windows 7 computer

A:Power button and sleep button

sleep buttons depend on the manufacturers to where they go. most laptops sleep function is assigned to an F key and used in conjuction with the function or "fn" button. usually on F2 or F3.
These buttons are not programmable via the power options in control panel.

if its a desktop and doesnt have a dedicated sleep button you can reasign the task to either the restart or power button within control panel and or set it to sleep/hybernate after a given time.

Shouldn't be. Most newer ones just use the main power switch for suspend, power on/off. If all else fails pull the power cord in the back....LOL

I've recently upgraded my case to a full tower Thermaltake OverSeer RX 1 which has this reset button on it, which I've not experienced before. What is it for?

I did some Google searches which left me asking more questions as to what the reset button is actually for. I've read that is for a soft or hard restart or reboot of the system. If that's the case, what's the point of having a restart option in the OS. Some clear concise definition or explanation to help clear this up

A:reset button

Hello Jimbo,

Congratulations on getting a nice new case. Enjoy.

The reset button basically just does a hard restart of the computer.

Hi
Don't know if anybody can help,i don't have much info.
A friend has a tower running win xp.
Power button on front, underneath is the reset button.
Their child pushed reset button, and now when switched on all they get is an intermittant bleeping.Don't know make of tower. Is there a timer on reset button,or hold down for so many seconds,or something. No system disc.
Many Thanks for reading.

A:Reset Button

There's no timer, the button just stops the power flow for the time it is pressed in.

You could try unplugging the reset wire for troubleshooting, but I doubt it has much to do with the boot problems. Also, reset CMOS.

Hi,
My desktop quit working the other day (electrical power storm). After using an omh meter to check various parts, we diagnosed the problem was the on/off switch at the front of the case. It holds three lights. The only markings on it are CAV2. Does anyone know where I might get a replacement for the switch? My child would be extremely grateful.

A:need reset button

Well if the case uses a standard ATX powerswitch then any local computer will have one.

To see if thats truely the only problem you can short the two pins on the motherboard that the switch connects to with a screwdriver for a split second and the computer should turn on.

Hi. I know this is probably a serious newbie question, but I had a Compaq for years. I just upgraded to a Gateway with XP. The machine has a Reset button right next to the power button. None of my previous PCs ever had a Reset button and I am trying to find out what that button does. Obviously it resets the system, but I am trying to find out when I should use it.

When I start my PC i hear the "Whirl" of the hard drive starting up, but when my PC freezes up on me and I use the Reset button, the PC restarts, but there is no "Whirl."

Is using the Reset the same as using Start> Turn Off Computer> Restart

Thanks for any info.

Essentially, yes it is. It doesn't stop your harddrive from spinning. If your computer freezes up and you can't hit start > shutdown > restart, you can just hit the reset button. I have heard you shouldn't do this if you don't have to, but I do it all the time and I haven't had any problems with it.

I recently upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10. When I power down the system from the menu, my computer does not completely turn off. The procedure I use is described below:

Click Windows_Start_button > Power > Shutdown

The system closes applications and appears to initiate a shutdown procedure. Everything appears to be shut off, but my mouse is still lit up. I do notice that the fan stops and everything else appears to be completely shut down. When I was running Windows 7 before my upgrade, my system completely powered down.

I have a dual boot system with Linux, and when I power down from Linux, the shutdown is complete, so I don't think I accidentally did anything to the hardware or BIOS.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm pretty sure there is some tweak in Windows 10 that would fix this, but I haven't found it yet. Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to offer.

A:Power down button does not completely turn computer power off

I found the solution on another thread. If you have this problem try the following:
1. Log in as an administrator.
2. Right click the Menu button.
3. Left click -> Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable
4. Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended)
5. Make sure Hibernate is unchecked.
6. Left click Save changes.
The next time you shut down the computer, it will be completely powered off. At least this worked on my machine.

the router reset button changes your ip but does leaving your router off for 30 sec do the same

A:router reset button

Your IP address is assigned to you by your ISP dynamically (unless you have a static address, in which case that information will be stored in your router). Dynamic addresses are not stored in your router. It is quite possible that even though you have a dynamic IP that you appear to have a static one. It just depends on how your ISP allocates its IPs.

The router reset button is usually used when your router gets itself into a state that even a power cycle cannot recover from. It resets all of the router settings to the default factory state. You will need to re-enter all information that was previously stored in order to be able to access the Internet. Check with your ISP for the settings to use, and the router manual for details on how to enter it. Most routers allow you to store all settings and save the data to a file which you can place on a USB stick or other storage and from which you can quickly restore if you need to. I strongly recommend that you create such a file, if you haven't already done so. Again, see the router manual for details.

A:HP DV6-3000 Getting NO power. No response from power button ...

Bannor,  The LED on the DC jack usually is an indicator of whether the AC adapter is working properly.  That light is on a different circuit and does not require a good system board.  If the light does not come on usually the adapter is bad. If you've already tested or replaced the adapter then the dc jack is the next step however when HP replaces this part in the repair depot they usually replace the entire board (with jack soldered on) at once.  You might consider replacing the entire board. Wes

Hi all, I own a Lenovo Flex 10 and due to several circumstances I need to reset the notebook back to factory settings using the recovery partition. In the owners manual as well as in the maintenance manual there is pointed out to press the so-called Push-Button Reset. At the Flex 14 and Flex 15 notebooks it is described as NOVO button. Where is this button located at the Flex 10 notebook?Neither the owners, nor the maintenace manual shows any hints to find this button. Also there is no hint using any key combination (like Fn+F2 to enter the BIOS) to enter the recovery process. I also explored the Lenovo community and knowledgebase and the only thing I found was that misterious Push-Button Reset, where I'm looking for. So the question is how can I start the recovery process?Potentially is there any option in the BIOS? Kind regardsJoerg

A:Flex 10 Recovery - "Push-Button Reset"

For those still looking for the answer, try following step: 1- Shutdown your FLEX10 system2- Press F1 and hold3- Power on system4- Proceed with system restore/reset Hope that helps

Hi,

The thing is when I click the reset button to reset the PC is supposed to suspend is set to it, something that does not suddenly appear on the ASUS logo as if it had to power on the PC and the security options appear or start windows normally.

This is reset:

Even if you set the reset button without function it does so the same thing, the button doesn't get no function.

The power button works well.

Help!

MB photo:

Let me clarify, when I press this button, of reset:

The system suddenly restarts and give me kernel power 41 error instead of sleep.
Thank you.

I have to hit the reset button every time I turn my computer on. After i hit the reset button everything comes up just fine. But every morning when i get up I turn the power to my computer on and it has a blank screen the two DVD drives blink and the hdd led stays lit up bright. but then when i hit the reset button it comes up just like normal. can anyone tell me why this is? It's not affecting anything that I can tell just annoying. I do not have to go into BIOS and change anything after this occurs. Windows starts just like normal and there does not seem to be any thing else wrong with my pc.

Thanks for the help guys this site is the best!

A:Pressing reset button causes windows serious error

How long have you had the problem? If it is only a recent problem, try doing a system restore. System restore allows you to return to a previous state of time, to usually when your computer was in a better state of working order. It may or may not correct your problem, however. Try this option under safe mode.[Click the start menu/tray > then to programs > accessories > system tools > system restore. (If your system restore settings are disabled then disregard the suggestion)

A:Black Screen, have to hit Reset button on Chasis.

As i've not had any black screens since my initial post and i'm having surgery monday with an expected 2 week hospital stay (not my best planning, posting late thursday knowing of the coming surgery, but i get nervous about computer security stuff and sort of panicked), i'm not quite sure what the best option would be in regards to this thread....If someone is already involved with looking at the logs and stuff, i leave it up to you as to how you would like to proceed, given this new information - whatever you feel is best is fine with me, and thank you for looking into my issue. If noone has started yet, please delete this thread - i'll make a new one after the hospital stay if needed. Also, i'm starting to think this is more likely a Driver, Hardware, or Norton issue, not Malware..... tho i could be wrong.

I promise I'm not that stupid (!!) but I feel that way. Changed the batteries (which wasn't even the problem) anyway now I can't reset my wireless moust cuz I can't find the Reset Button!! Feeling totally stupid but I've tried everything. It's a Logitech, Dell laptop, all USBs etc. are fine and I DID reset the wireless keyboard (found that button!!). But the mouse, I don't see a button anywhere and can't remember what I did to set it up. It's a 2-sided mouse with a roller wheel. Lights up on the bottom. Bottom has some screws and "lifters" to change batteries and LED, but no button!!! Called store they said, "Look for the button." Anyone know? THANKS

ANy help why it dows this.
The pc restarts fine and shutsdown ok too!!!

A:Reset button goes to windows did not shutdown properly screen

That is perfectly normal. Basically, it causes an abrupt shutdown, meaning that unlike a proper shutdown files and documents are not saved properly to disk. The reset button is only meant to be used in the event of a system crash where there is no other means of shutting down and restarting because the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. I do sometimes use it if I am trying to catch the option to boot to my Linux disk (F11 on my system) and miss it.

Windows 7 x64 Professional. I have several issues. Most notable is the fact that I will tell the system to restart (shutdown menu) and it will eventually restart (sometimes hangs at "logging off...") then fails to post after shutting down on the restart. If I manually toggle my reset button, the system starts up fine with no errors. If I had to power off during a hang at shutdown, I get a prompt with startup options saying the system failed to shut down correctly.

Other issues which may be related: Windows update freezes after opening only displaying the loading mouse (think hourglass) and a white screen. I have to force quit from task manager. iTunes also fails to launch, but opens a process (visable in task manager).

I have tried a system settings/files restore, with no progress.

Any help!?

Thanks!

A:fail to post after restart, but fixed with reset button

Welcome to Seven forums LongN3ck.
Offhand this sounds like a bad motherboard. Power off and remove all USB devices, except keyboard, mouse, and try it. Take out all memory modules except one and try it.
Power off and reset CMOS. Pull the power cable out first.
*Method one, remove the coin battery and short the battery terminals for 10 seconds.
*Method two, The mother board may have CMOS reset jumpers, short them for 10 seconds.

If the issue persists I still think its a bad board. I've had much experience with bad ones.

3)   *: Others

4)   *: Push Button Reset     NFIS
None

I deleted 3) *: Others and merged it with C: because it had no file.

Hi guys, I think this MAY have something to do with me overclocking my CPU a while back, as I initially used a tweaking program, which I soon learned just messes with your CPU so I did it myself in BIOS. Prior to me doing it myself My computer stopped resetting as it should do eaither by hitting the reset button or doing it through XP/Vista. I use both OS so I know this is a hardware issue, ovbiously. If anyone has a fix it for this it would be greatly appreciated. When I do reset it though, everything is still running, hdd is still on, monitor stays on so thats a good indication that nothing has powered off or is resetting.

Basically all I can tell yas.

Thanks

My power button action random changed to "shut down" a few days ago. It used to be lock.

I accidentally clicked it at the time and couldn't abort shutdown in time.

Computer shut down and installed windows updates (I don't recall having seen pending updates, but could have missed it).

Now this button is stuck on "shut down"... and it has the shield mark thing beside it.

Any idea what this means?

A:Power button button forced to "Shut down"

The shield icon is a part of windows update; and basically means if you tell the system to shut down; before it shuts down; it will install the updates first; and if you boot back up after it shuts down; before you get to the logon screen; it may say windows is configuring updates.

I've got a Compaq Presario CQ61 with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it.

Now, lately my computer's been causing me a lot of troubles, up to the point I'd like to set it back

Do I need those to put the computer back to factory settings, or does my OS remain as it is today?

A:Crashing & Hard Reset Needed

Thank you for supplying your specs, but you forgot the most important one, the Power Supply Unit.
Freezing is usually caused by overheating or an underpowered or failing PSU. Remove the side clean out all dust, blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Look at the label and post the Make, Model # and Wattage of the PSU. If it is under 500Watts it is underpowered for your setup Get a PSU of 550Watts or better. .
Boot into Setup (Bios) and set it to Failsafe Defaults (F5). This should set the proper speed for your RAM.

So recently my machine has been in my backpack travelling with me due few reasons. When I came home today and mounted it all up again, one of my HDDs became RAW system and I am unable to access it. Now Windows keeps insisting that I should format the drive but I really need to preserve most of the saved data.

Iv downloaded TestDisk but have no idea how to use it.

Is there a way to at least recover my files? I really need to get another backup drive to have my important work saved on.

Using Windows 7 x64 Pro.

A:After re-connecting HDD, reset to RAW from NTFS. Fix Needed.

Shall I let Windows format the drive? Would this make me loose all my data?

I have set the Taskbar buttons to never combine.
The problem is when I try to move a window button to the far left all related buttons go with it.
Is there any way I can set it up to just move individual buttons in the same way the tabs work in Firefox.

Sorry if this has been covered before but I couldn't find it if it has.

Marcus.

Here is a link to a tutorial on resetting the Admin password (Reset User Account Password - Vista Forums). May be what you need.

I was watching a Britain's Got Talent video on youtube and the the computer froze. The mouse as well. I had to press the reset button on the front of the computer to get it to work again. I reset the computer and during the boot screen it said "system drive fail press CTRL+ALT+DEL" I reset the computer again and now the computer works fine. Any ideas to what may have caused this and what to do to fix it?

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3200+
Motherboard: ASUS A7N8X-X
RAM: 1.25GB DDR400
Hard Drive: MAXTOR 120GB
PSU: 400W
GPU: Sparkle Nvidia 5700LE
DVD ROM and DVD-RW Floppy Disk
Any Ideas?

Thanks.

I've just installed my new Pluscom NAS. I set it up fine and it works great for all PCs on my LAN (four Windows clients) so I decided to explore FTP next - then realised that none of my usual passwords seem to work! Ie I can't proceed past the login screen of the configuration area to complete the setup

I've tried 50 combinations to no joy. Worse still, there seems to be no reset facility and there is next to no support available for this

Can someone please guide me through how to reset the NAS back to factory settings, so that admin/admin works again? I'm now familiar enough with the interface to create the accounts, folders and workgroup settings.

Thanks - I've tried everything.

Hey dunno if anyone can help me here..... A:HELP needed! I have reset windows and now have no audio devices!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Do you have onboard sound, or a separate sound card?

If you have onboard sound and your computer is an oem build, such as Dell/Compaq/Gateway etc. You can get your sound drivers etc from your computer manufacturers website.

If your computer is not an oem build. You can get the sound drivers from your mobo manufacturers website. You should also install the chipset(mobo) drivers as well.

If you have a separate sound card, you will need to go to your soundcard manufacturers website.

Hi, I just obtained a used/refurbished E6430. The BIOS (A09) is protected with an Administrator Password. How do I reset it?

A:E6430 BIOS Password Reset Needed

HARRIGILL,
If this computer has a BIOS password you will need to contact Dell Support by phone for a release code. Click the link below.
System prompts for a Hard Drive or BIOS password
If it is a Windows Administrator Password. You would need a password reset disc or reinstall Windows. At  the link below is information of a  google search link with many post about forgotten Administrator passwords and how to resolve resetting or bypassing,

Sometimes when I press the power-on button on the tower, it starts up OK, then cuts out, & goes quiet, the button is still depressed, I press to get it out, then press again.
Sometimes I have to press several times, the screen then tells me "Several attempts have been made.....etc., press F1 to access BIOS......or boot-up {default} will start in 5-4-3-2-1 seconds" I then leave it to do this, I'm not going into BIOS!!
I gather that this is a connection/mechanical fault, can you pin-point it for me please?

Maurice

A:Power On Button

Hello Maurice it has been a while.

There a couple of settings that may be causing your problem ,but if you won't go into your Bios I am not sure how you can deal with ,unless a buddy can stop by.
There is usually a setting controlling the function of the Button.
Sleep/suspend setting ?
What do you want to do?

Dell Inspiron 530 was working okay before I went on holiday. Came back, logged on, all loaded up but computer screen froze. Shut down in normal way. Now it won't come back on. The power light is on (blue) and DELL name came up on the screen, but the screen is now blank.. I can hear the hard drive fans going there are no other sounds from the hard drive, no beeps just the blue light. Left it on for a while to see if it would eventually load up but nothing. I unplugged the power supply, tried a different USB for the keyboard. The wireless mouse is lit up .

A:Power button

Restart your computer.
At the first text on the screen or when the Dell logo appears, tap <F2> until the message Entering Setup appears.
From the BIOS look around and make sure that you can see the CPU, HHD, Memory...
Note if anything is missing.

First I may know what my problem is, but I want to make sure, before i replace a Power supply. After a normal shutdown, Windows XP, if I restart right away, there is no Problem. But if I wait 15 min, or longer, I must hold in the Power button 5 sec, take my finger off, then press, and computer starts. This is like a Hard shutdown. I repair my Computer, but try to get a print of a Compter, good luck.

A:Power Up Button

Sounds like the BIOS is set up to use power management. Turn all of the PM features off and it should work the way you want.

My power button works fine but the switch thingy that needs to be plugged in all the way, which is under my keyboard (it's the one right above the screw with the label M2.5L4) is loose so any time I need to power up my laptop I have to take my keyboard off and push it in all the way then push the power button. Any tips to fix this or help in any way would be lovely

I have a Dell L C The unit seems to overheat when the machine is on for a long period of time It wont turn back on so the user had this great idea of constantly hitting the power button until it did Which for some reason seems to work After he hits it about times the unit turns back on I have checked the wires and made sure the connections inside the machine and outside the machine are ok I am not sure that its the power button but it would seem that even if the unit was on for long periods it should restart by hitting the power button Unless its overheating would excess heat cause the unit not to boot The workstation is in a small office in a shipping and recieving area its not next to a heater and the office isnt kept at hot conditions I am wondering if bad ram or a bad cpu can keep the unit from booting up after its been on or should I just order a new power button then power supply and do a process of elemination Thanks Eli nbsp
