Hardware and Software Question - DVD Server

Q: Hardware and Software Question - DVD Server

Greetings,
I am waist deep in home automation...trek homes you know. So I've of course ripped all my CD's for multi-zone multi-amp multi-soundcard music.

Now the final entertainment piece would be to rip all my DVDs for two reasons: 1 to protect my original DVDs from getting scratched (kids) and 2 so with the touch of a finger on my wi-fi touchpad I can load a movie sit back and relax.

I do not want to go the mult-Dvd disc changer. As with the multi-CD changers I see this as a dinasoaur.

With that Said:

Hardware: What would be the best quality video card for movie playing, HDTV etc. Estimated minimum Drive Requirements? 250GIG?

Server Config: Dell Dual drive raid server. 1 gig of ram. AMD chip? Harddrive sizes? Will of course take server recomendations from this wealth of knowledge.

Recomendations on Projectors?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Hardware and Software Question - DVD Server

KD,

As far as the "server" specs go, since you are apparently going to buy a Pre-Manufactured unit, eg, Dell, and obviously you don't want to limit your pleasure by anything as trivial as MONEY....Just buy the biggest most badass unit they offer.

And if it is specified as Multi-media, it "should" lean in the direction you want. As for the HD capacity...since you are talking about ARCHIVING all of you CD's and DVD's to Hard Disk, 250GB should be sufficient...for your FIRST hard drive !!! Go on from there.

As for projectors...as a friend of mine always says, "You never have to make excuses for buying the best." Pick up a magazine and check out the reviews.

Howdy Gents,
I'm curious: Besides being able to go with a rackmount chassis, at the hardware-level, what is the big difference between a server and a really, really powerful desktop?

A:Hardware question: server vs. high-end desktop

Nothing, really. Servers have more options for power, multiple CPU's, etc...

Our office uses a high end desktop for a server. Dell & HP sell Celeron and Sempron "servers" with no operating system, etc...

If you're looking at using a desktop as a server, just get the right software, a screaming processor, jam it full of RAM, and if you're doing web hosting, get a dual NIC unless your router supports the outside connection protocols.

I have a Asus g50 gaming laptop with vista 64 and zorin both running. This computer has been great but recently windows is always screwing up and now I can't get on Internet with it. It says connected but nothing. Zorin works great....so this leads to my questions...

Is this pic still worth ,hardware wise, to justify installing a newer version of windows? If yes, which one? I have little experience with windows 7 or 8.

I'm not a big gamer any more but do enjoy it from time to time. No more WoW or the like. So if I where to get a new laptop, what is a good all around for a good price?

I have been dealing with my computer randomly freezing for the last year. I have checked and re-checked all of my hardware (except for the motherboard) but I am nowhere closer to solving the riddle... If my computer freezes while running outside of Windows like during memtest or just idling in the Bios, can I rule out software as the culprit behind the freezing? I am looking for a yes/no to begin with.

Yes. you can also see if it freezes in safe mode vs normal. that will narrow the focus

I guess the title says it all...(I do that so the topic is easier to search...)
Simply..I have a Hp laptop that has a Pentium Hyperthread 1 gig chip in it. Many people tell me to use Windows Xp, and that's all very swell...but I REALLY want to use 2000pro. Most of the drivers should work and I since I basically want the laptop for a digital 'drum machine' of sorts, I need as much memory as possibly, of which it has little. Does it really make that much of a giant difference should I go ahead and run 2000pro on it instead?

thanks!

Hi i want to make a server the min requirements is SQL server Standard or Enterprise

RAM 1GB - 2GB, But in most cases 4GB + 30MB for Reporting Services + Analysis Services, 50-60MB for SQL Management Studio & itís recommended each user connection takes 24KB

CPU 64Bit Proc Intel Xeon 3.4GHz

HDD Internal for the Min of 500GB

We will need Fibre connection to external storage array, Fibre cards in servers for connection to storage array, UPS & a Rack & the server should be cheap & upgradeable in future.

Hi,

I'm in need of some suggestions on what type of PC (hardware requirements) would be good to run versions of Windows Server. The PC would not be used for business purposes, purely for learning. All I need is for the PC to run Windows Server and run it without being too slow ie, I want an old PC to run Windows Server not a new one but I dont know what would be sufficient.

So if anyone can provide some suggestions, such as a PIII 700mhz, 256MB RAM etc it would be great.

Thank you.

Hello there folks,

i recently bought myself a little server. Now i want to test it for high availability and endurance. What tool can be recommended? I normally use the linux tool stress, but this only gives me evidence for short time usage.
I would also like a tool which is os independent and that tests all installed components.

Does anybody know what Dell or HP uses for stability and high availability tests?

All information is very appreciated! Even if the solution is non-free!

Hi all It's very difficult to get really good advice on this but I'm now trying to build the quot Ultimate quot HOME server for Hardware Server good a HOME W7 machine Note the machine will be essentially used as a HOME not a commercial work server so it doesn't need all the fancy gaming state of the art graphics cards etc What it DOES need is enough RAM and horsepower to run Virtual servers whilst also file and print sharing to a number of quot remote quot actually a LAN workstations A quot Blade quot type server would be OK in a commercial environment but my server needs to be a bit like a conventional workstation I need around GB RAM seems hard to get a basic motherboard with enough memory slots these days and a QUAD Hardware for a good W7 HOME Server CPU The I O subsystem nust allow for around drives and two DVD CD units to be connected and have video output capability to drive monitors although most of the tine the monitors will probably be disconnected I need to have as well at least but preferably Network cards on it Most of the stuff I've looked at seems to be more geared to high performance gaming or running NASA's next Mars mission A SERVER doesn't need hideously expensive gear - but it does need the capability to have loads of memory and disk drives to be connected to it Any IT admins out there who use this type of stuff at work -- recommendations The ability to run Virtual servers decently is essential so GB of RAM is the minimum -- Ideally I'd like GB but that's probably like asking for the moon I've googled around -- there's load of info on decent high end gear -- which isn't what I need and also quot server Farm quot type stuff -- also what I don't need I can't be the only person who want to run a decent home server network I need the virtual servers as well as I often work from home on a lot of projects and use the virtual servers to connect to the remote customer and run their apps Cheers jimbo

Jeez...I run a handful of ESXi servers at work and I usually put 24GB of RAM in those to run 10-12 concurrent Linux and Windows servers and that usually doesn't max out the RAM. So, I would have to imagine that 16GB of RAM is going to be more than enough for home use and 4 VM's.

Quite a number of new mobo's support 16GB of RAM...it will just have to be a 4 x 4GB setup. Quad core CPU's are a dime a dozen. The I/O subsystem to allow that many drives will likely just involve adding on 1 additional controller card. And just about any modern video card can easily handle dual monitor support.

Quite a number of mobos have 2 NIC's...You will just need to add a stand-alone PCI NIC to the box. The Intel 10/100/1000 GT cards are excellent and only around $25.

I honestly don't think that this would really cost that much money? Do you have any type of budget set aside that you want to work with? Of course, keep in mind that 16GB of DDR3 RAM for a Core i5/i7 build is going to be over $750 itself.

Hi all,

We have system for our work that uses a web/application server and a database server. Around 150 people use this application and the data stored are usually text, ms office documents, pdf files and images. Suppose that about 50 people are using the system at any given time, what do you think will need better hardware specs, the database server or the web/application server?

Could you give any recommendations for the hardware specs? Like cpu, ram? A friend of mine suggested that it would be good to use the nVidia Tesla GPU for parallel processing. Is this a good idea or is this going a bit overboard?

Thanks

Its probably hardware, since you have reformatted, unless its a program you are installing after you reformat or a faulty installation.

Does it stay on until the Windows loading screen? If so, it could be a video driver issue. Try booting into Safe Mode and uninstalling the video drivers, reboot, and update the video drivers.

If it doesn't stay on that long, the video chipset or screen is faulty.

I have an ASUS M2A-VM HDMI system that some time ago blew the power supply. I had a second video card (NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT) already installed at the time. Upon replacing the power supply the onboard video was not operating. It hasn't been a problem until now.

I'm trying to install a LCD HDTV as my primary monitor and would like to use the DVI output from the ASUS. I'm not getting any signal from it. When I check with the device manager only the NVIDIA is listed. There is a "ASUS Other Devices" named "Enhanced Display Driver Helper Service" with no drivers installed listed.

I'm not sure now if when the power supply blew (yes, the machine was running at the time) that the onboard video was toasted or wether I've got a software problem.

Any ideas?

I did get it to go to the System Restore screen, but, am scared of erasing all of the data on the computer. I think it said that it wouldn't do that, but, I wanted to double check with you.

Any suggestions?

Are you referring to the Windows XP System Restore feature? All About System Restore in WinXP - http://bertk.mvps.org/ Compaq systems come with recovery/restore provisions which basically means that they reinstall all software and drivers all over agains. That should not be referred to as System Restore...it's the Compaq way to restore the system back to the way that it was when first acquired.Any such features for repair/restore/recovery...which have been implemented by Compaq...should be covered in the owner's manual or at the Compaq website.Louis

Yes -- let someone who knows what their doing build a PC for you! Much less hassle that way and it keeps those little computer shops in work building computers. Support your local PC shop! (I'm not referring to the "PC World" megastores, I mean the little guy who actually builds them, doesn't just shift boxes out the door).

Forgive me for not knowing the computer model number or anything but I can tell you this is an HP about two years old So or Software, hardware? I'm doing my boyfriend's taxes last week on his computer and in the middle of it we get the BSOD Software, or hardware? with Software, or hardware? this message IRQL not less or equal So we restarted and Software, or hardware? it was fine Next day I'm on it and it does it again I Google on my BlackBerry and it says it's a memory problem so I run a diagnostic test on it sure enough there are memory issues that seem like it's a hardware issue We backed up some stuff that night and got the BSOD once again and took it to Best Buy I know I know because he has an extended warranty Well now they are claiming it's a software issue with the registry and they can't fix it unless they charge him and they want to wipe the whole thing and start over I think this is a bunch of BS frankly My theory is that we take the computer home get into safe mode and back everything up this time uninstall some programs I might add I hadn't installed anything new for weeks and I had to install a few things a while back to get rid of a trojan on it--his son downloaded Frostwire--need I say more do a system restore and see what happens Of course he's all pissy since they didn't call him I was there getting a new laptop because mine was a lemon and I asked if his was done and he seems to think that somehow this is my fault I can tell by his voice and that he should just pay they money he doesn't have for them to fix it Advice This just came out of nowhere hadn't installed anything new that I can tell only thing I can think of is Windows Updates but that would be it They claimed at BB they'd run memory tests and they came out fine but the one I tried did NOT come out fine Argh I'd just like to get this resolved without paying money and so my boyfriend isn't grumpy anymore

Hi everyone I m new around these parts but figure to give it a shot and see if anyone can help me Software? Hardware? or out I have a DELL computer and over the weekend the following happen My computer monitor suddently froze and a bunch of lines started to appear all over the place I could move my mouse over the screen but could not get the computer to respond to the commands Click on the START or choose Ctrl Alt Delete etc turned off the computer in order to re-boot and when ti came back up the monitor has checkerboard pattern all over the place I could not see the desktop except some icons behind the checker board pattern I checked the connections of the monitor to the computer I re-booted more times Hardware? or Software? with the same results I m not a big expert when it comes to hardware problems but my questions will be would this be a problem with the monitor its DELL that I purchase about years ago and its a quot re-furbished model - it has worked fine up until now or the video card The video card software was updated not to long ago - about months ago from the manufacture NVIDIA GeForce GTX I want to make sure before I run to buy a new monitor Also I thought of trying out the Hardware? or Software? monitor by un-plugging it from my desktop and plugging it on my laptop to see if is a monitor problem would this be a good step to take If so how would I go about having the laptop identify the monitor Thanks nbsp

A:Hardware? or Software?

Tap F8 while rebooting and choose Safe Mode. If the problem still occurs, it's hardware - maybe your video card needs re-seating.

Hi there I'm in need of some advice insight into what's going on with my new Toshiba L -B- I'm in a bit of a bind and I have no idea what to do I bought this brand new a few days ago After having it Software? or Hardware for a couple of days the mousepad froze Everything else seemed to be running it was just the mouse that was stuck I logged out of my account via task manager and when Hardware or Software? out of my account the mouse worked but when I logged back in Hardware or Software? it froze I restarted a couple of times and logged back in and the mouse would move for a few seconds before freezing again I did a factory reset and it appeared to be working Then today pretty much the same amount of time lapsing since the first time it screwed up it did it again This time I did a system restore to an earlier point It's now working again I have no idea if this is a hardware issue or software as for things downloaded by me on this laptop I have put on chrome firefox ccleaner and utorrent As well as uploading my music from a usb If anyone has any idea what's going on I would be extremely grateful for any help operating system is Windows

A:Hardware or Software?

it is brand new, contact toshiba support since it is under warranty. You want all problems on record there just in case.

a couple of things to consider. since it is a brand new computer it will take a few days for it to auto update the operating system. Also it will also take a few days for search to finish indexing the drive. Both can case the problem you are having.

I've seen many members have problem ID'ing their hardware.
About a month ago someone link to a nice beta program that gave a nice rundown of all the hardware on ones computer.
I'm trying to remember or find the link but just don't remember the name or subject.

It was a free program like Everest but not that much detail and was Beta.
Your help and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hey all Not sure of which forum to post this thread under so I guess I'll start here I recently purchased and installed some new hardware The new hardware is eVGA GeForce FX Ultra MB xAGP videocard P CGhz Mhz bus L cache CPU Soyo Fire Dragon Ultra Platinum motherboard Other hardware in my system if you need to know MB PC Mhz GEIL DDR memory GB Maxtor MB buffer IDE hard drives x Plextor Plexwriter CDRW P O S quot Gateway monitor watt Enermax dual fan power supply Now here's the issue Every time I run dmark my machine freezes at the EXACT same point during the first CPU test the planes if you didn't know Also rarely my machine will do the same during Software? Hardware or a game I have had this happen on a graphically intensive game and a lower quality game I have checked my temps and nothing is Hardware or Software? even close to overheating I don't have anything overclocked and have studied and attempted several BIOS System setting and video setting tweaks to try Hardware or Software? and resolve this but to no avail The fact that this happens at the exact same point in dmark negates the overheat possibility and the fact that it happens on lower quality games negates a problem with the video card I am both and gamer and an IT professional and I cannot figure this issue out If anyone has ANY insight at all please respond I have tried reformatting and reinstalling XP as well as dmark DirectX a and my video card drivers serveral times so count those fixes out now Thanx in advance to anyone with some insight The jokA

Sounds like the CPU may not be flushing the cache properly.

Do you have another P4 CPU that you can try in there?

I am also going to do a system hardware upgrade with new mobo, cpu, psu, and ram.

Question - which should I do first?

A:Hardware or Software First?

Hello Ned, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I would recommend doing the hardware updates first, then upgrading to Windows 8 to avoid any activation issues with Windows 8.

A:I got the hardware, now to add the software..

FreeBSD is a solid choice in general however I do think that it's quite a waste to replace your MIPS box as it'll do just fine. If you want more control just flash OpenWRT on it even though Broadcom isn't the ideal platform (no WiFi most likely).

Anyhow, you can give FreeBSD a go. I'd personally go for -CURRENT but you'll also be fine with the latest release. Make sure you have the latest BIOS installed and that you're AHCI and not compatible mode. The handbook gives you a good start on how to setup a firewall using ipfw or pf (I'd personally recommend pf).

Why don't you just replace the memory Dimm that the diagnostic program indicates. If that works out, present the bill to BB and tell them that they made a mistake sending you on a wild goose chase. You can scan your system here to find out what Dimm you need: RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com

I have been having crashes that i don't think are BSOD's since there are no dump files anywhere I thought it was my ram but i am failing to determine which sticks are bad or if any of them are bad at all I have ran memtest with all sticks in and no errors I have ran memtest with sticks at a time and no errors If it crashes it is usually right as the desktop would show up after the windows welcome screen If it was the RAM wouldn't it not always crash at the EXACT same time But then sometimes i can boot fine and won't crash for hours or days with all my ram in I think im going to go to vista and see if i crash at all This problem seems like software to me but i have just about given up on this problem Its just way too inconsistent to know if it is ram related if Can't hardware its tell software. or or any hardware related Has anyone ever had this problem

A:Can't tell if its hardware or software.

If when it crashes you see a blue screen with numbers on it, it is a BSOD. There are several places the DMP files can be and several reasons why they cant be created.

We do need the DMP file as it contains the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.

If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking.

To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder.

The procedure:

Quote:
* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply.

To ensure minidumps are enabled:

Quote:
* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... button.
* Ensure that Automatically restart is unchecked.
* Under the Write Debugging Information header select Small memory dump (256 kB) in the dropdown box (the 256kb varies).
* Ensure that the Small Dump Directory is listed as %systemroot%\Minidump.
* OK your way out.
* Reboot if changes have been made.

A:Software or Hardware?

If chkdsk found multiple bad sectors, I would run one more test to be sure the drive is faulty. You may want to think about testing your hard drive with the manufacturer's testing utility. A list of manufacturer's testing utilities can be found here.If the manufacturer's drive test once again states problems with the disk, then yes I would replace the failing hard drive. You also may want to find the install disks for this laptop as you'll not have the "D:" partition or the image on the new drive.Hope this helps,

Emachine T5026

1+ gb ram
350 gb HDD (brand new)
160 gb HDD (came with system)
Motherboard (no idea)
This is my problem, when I bootup with the 160gb HDD, it gets as far as the windows logo and freezes. I install the new HDD and try to install windows on it and it downloads all the way until it say "starting windows", then it also freezes.
I reboot the new harddrive and let it download until it ask me to hit F6 the hit F2 which I do, then it ask me to install the windows automated system recovery disk. I can not do that because my machine does not have a floppy disk drive, I do have a USB external floppy but the machine does not allow to direct it to that external drive.
Can anyone advise me how to fix this problem or am I doomed to visit the geek guys?

So I m thinking of building a personal file- server I have some ideas about what I should get but seeing as I currently don t have money for building it it s still in planning stage I m thinking of building a RAID server which runs on Linux which distro I do not yet know Taking suggestions for personal server hardware but I m considering later Ubuntu versions While I say personal I will still allow my family and closest friends access to it maybe over LAN only for security reasons if this is possible Seeing as I have many many large files there is also a great need for disk space Therefore I am thinking of buying five hard disks one terabyte each for RAID where one will be lost for parity and one small ish hard disk for the O S to run from I also am thinking of running software RAID so I am not going to use money on external RAID controller unless absolutely necessary Requirements for hardware are Chassis Must be able to house six hard drives and at least one CD DVD rom drive Taking suggestions for personal server hardware Does not need floppy Must be able to install sufficient cooling May or may not include PSU Motherboard Integrated sound graphics network card RAID support DDR MHz or higher RAM support At least six SATA connectors Also at least one IDE connector for CD DVD rom drive CPU Probably dual-core with decent frequency Not sure what to say here Obviously must be supported by mobo Memory Two or four gigabytes of or higher MHz DDR RAM Hard drives Five hard drives with at least TB each Used in RAID One cheap hard drive with preferably RPM for O S All of these must be SATA SATAII drives No Samsung drives had enough troubles with them in the past EDIT May start with less drives in RAID if I understood the quot mdadm quot command correctly as in that you can add additional drives semi- easily later on CD DVD drive IDE drive No other requirements Used mainly for installing the O S not much else All of this should not cost more than little less than Some extra may be used for cooling and possible PSU Absolute maximum is Taking suggestions will probably build this in November as a personal birthday present for myself nbsp

Hi,
I'll appreciate some ideas on how to safely migrate an existing ATA Center installation across server Hardware. The capacity of the present ATA Center Server was sized for a Pilot deployment. Now we plan to move into full blown deployment. In-place
Hardware resource upgrade is not a likely option. Additionally, the motivation is not to do a fresh install of the server, more importantly not to start learning the environment afresh.

Hi everyone I was hoping for some hardware advice recommendations for a SMB server build We currently have a server that s built on consumer hardware Phenom II X GB RAM and a gaming mother board but Advice Build? Grade a for Server Hardware we ve Advice for a Server Grade Hardware Build? grown frustrated with frequent stability issues Our server is a virtual machine host running Centos minimal with about VMs on top of it It has Hard drives in a RAID configuration and each VM uses a logical volume instead of file based images The guest VMs are Ubuntu Server with OpenLDAP Ubuntu Server running NFS including NFS home folders for all our users Windows XP Windows XP Ubuntu Server with Advice for a Server Grade Hardware Build? The more I try and learn about backups and safe storage the more questions I have Here's my latest I have two identical SATA III Gb hard drives designated question software RAID box NAS Software and question, quot D Drive quot under Win bit Pro They are under an Intel software RAID on a Gigabyte GA-Z X-Gaming motherboard Software RAID question, and NAS box software question All appears well I have the OS and my two mail apps on C Drive which is an SSD drive I use Second Copy Software RAID question, and NAS box software question to automatically back up both mail apps to the RAID D drives each night I also use Z-DBackup Software RAID question, and NAS box software question to make a system image of the C Drive once a week which it creates on the RAID pair The RAID pair D Drive with the system image is backed up to LTO tape once a week What happens if on of the RAID pair of SATA III drives fails I guess the Intel software RAID flags a fault I then have to work out which of the drives is dead and swap it out What if an identical drive is no longer available Will any Gb or larger SATA III drive work paired with the one remaining original working drive Does the RAID rebuild occur automagically How long might one expect it to take With a truly unlucky chain of events leaving the PC dead or missing say from a power surge theft or whatever and I just have my tape how do I go about getting the C Drive image from it to a new PC Do I run a repair disc load the tape deck drivers and the SCSI card drivers it runs on SCSI on an Adaptec card then will there be enough quot stuff quot on the new PC to load the Z-Dat software and restore from said tape I guess I should be brave and quot create quot a fault and see if it all works BEFORE a real world failure As an aside if the motherboard croaked and I had to replace it with a currently available one can I be reassured another board would still read the software RAID created hard drive pair Finally If I bought a new NAS box and put SATA drives in it as a RAID pairing and at a later stage the box hardware croaked would a different currently available box necessarily be able to read the drives I can't see much redundancy in them if this is not the case as the risk of hard drive failure is just moved to the risk of the box hardware failing I am not sure if I am understanding how they work correctly or not Thanks

A:Software RAID question, and NAS box software question

Welcome.

Regarding your questions, first I want to say that RAID 1 is not a viable backup solution. Its only purpose is to allow a system to continue to operate with a hardware failure of one of the hard drives until that drive can be replaced. It is imperative to have the data on the RAID backed up elsewhere.

If one drive fails, the controller will warn you so that you may replace the bad drive. It knows which one.
Depending on the size of the drive, it can take many hours to rebuild, but you can continue to use the system as normal. The rebuilding is transparent.

If you use dissimilar drives, the array size will be equal to the smallest drive and it is not guaranteed that all combinations of drives will work together. You may experience constant rebuilds or worse.

I cannot comment on how to get your system up from tape. I have never used it. With other backup methods, there is usually boot-able media that allows recovering the operating system.

Whether or nor another board can read what is on the RAID 1 will really depend on the controller. I have had luck using Intel controllers. In fact, the data was readable from a single disk without using RAID.

I doubt if a different NAS could use the disks should the box hardware fail. You may be able to get the data though, by connecting one of the disks to a system that can read the file system used by the NAS.
The redundancy is within the NAS while it is operational. It would be nice if you could just get any NAS hardware and use any set of drives from any array but that is not possible today.

As you can see, there is no substitute for a good backup scheme. RAID is not it.
If data is corrupted, it will be corrupt on both members of the array.

RAID is good in servers where continued operation is a necessity. I gave up using RAID 1 years ago. To me, since I have no urgent reason to keep the data available in real time in case of a drive failure, RAID 1 is just a waste of drive space.

I use this space for backups of critical data.

I need something that can be used on an enterprise level. Something that scans the hardware to determine what you have (even with no os installed) and is able to perform all nubers of diagnostic tests and be able to report on the findings. Must be something in a bootable format and be able to test a BROAD number of devices. I want to be able to test everything from cpu, ram, usb, network, drives, basically the whole kit and kaboodle.

I have seen a few out there but I am really looking for onces others have used and can atest to their accuracy and reliability.

Hi to all this is my first post , I will like to see if someone can tell if this is a Hardware or Software related?

I went to my sister house and she told me the computer do not boot up and when we try it again the screen displayed in small letters "no sistem imput"

can someone help me to find out the problem?

A:Hardware or Software related?

Most likely cause is a failed hard drive. If the computer is three years old, or more, or has a Quantum, Maxtor, or silver colored Western Digital drive, that is the problem most of the time.
Luckily you can now get large drives cheaply at www.newegg.com, www.zipzoomfly.com, www.directron.com, www.outpost.com, www.TigerDirect.com, and many others.
Do you have the install disc set that will be needed.
If you have valuable data that will need to be recovered, that can SOMETIMES be done, but that is a separate question.

I have the following setup:
emachine T5026
windows XP
1 + gb of ram
form factor tower
mobo 533mhz

My problem is my system boots all the way up until it gets to the windows logo, then it freezes. I try to go into safe mode but it just gives me a bunch of DOS readings. I swopped out the HDD and still does the same. I tried to install XP and it install all the way until it says "windows is starting" and then it freezes at that spot. Tried loading it 4 times with no luck.
Would welcome any advice or suggestions on what need to be done to fix this problem.

A:Hardware or Software Problem?

So you've wiped out the original OS and there is none on there now? Which "windows is starting" are you talking about? The one with the blue background or the one when it is done installing?

I've had this computer since Jan 2010 and haven't recently installed any new software and haven't modified hardware since purchase. The crash occurs every 5-10 minutes and forces a restart on my computer. I've attached a minidump for review. Please help!

A:DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL - No changes to hardware of software

It seems something has gone wrong with your intel wireless drivers.
I would just pick up and install a new copy for the time being.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Default.aspx

That is of course specific to the crash in question.
I'm wondering how you've been stable though, your driver dump is full of pre win 7 device drivers.

Been looking for a program that detects all the hardware specifications. I used to have it on my old O.S but can't find it on the net. And i forgot what it's called

Any one got a link to one?

Thanks in advanced

Try PCWizard. It does its own detection and doesn't rely on Windows. But there are very many such apps.

I was not sure whether this belonged in software or hardware- I have a Dell Inspiron with XP sp Most of my activities on hardware or issue? software the computer revolve around graphics and digitizing embroidery designs I have software or hardware issue? used the same embroidery software for about years have gone through upgrades the latest in mid Dec I will try to be succinct-however I have spent at least hours on the phone with tech support since Dec and I still don t have a diagnosis There were not problems for about a week after the embroidery software upgrade Then when doing a normal function in the program it would abruptly close The first time was on a weekend so I uninstalled and reinstalled the program Then I called the tech support for the software and they showed me the fix for the problem-when the program closed there was an error message quot defaults dfl missing quot Actually I discovered the file was not missing it was being renamed to an alphanumeric dfl by some evil entity in my computer somehow This continued to happen up to times per day and they had me install the software on another computer and I could not duplicate the problem there They had me call NOrton and we uninstalled my Norton and eliminated that as a source of conflict I should add that I have done multiple virus malware trojan scans with NOrton and on the microsoft site and they all came up squeaky clean The next thing was to go to Microsoft and I ended up getting bumped up to Microsoft research team THere were quite a few phone sessions we did a repair install of XP and I began doing windows updates which by the way I do one at a time manually-always My instinct was that some corruption in a windows update caused theembroidery software issue The Research Team said to get an external hard drive and start transferring data so we could do a clean reinstall of XP MEANWHILE I was at a Bernina class last week and mentioned the saga of the software to the educator-she said to consider my video card I checked ATI for driver updates they have been bought by another company and said to go to computer maker for driver updates for the ATI video card-so I went to Dell plugged in my service tag and my correct computer make amp model came up The first update in the list was marked URGENT- it was Cyberlink Dell Media Direct Windowed mode Version AOO-application My computer does have Media Direct on it so I figured if it was urgent I should do it It downloaded and installed ok I rebooted and it came back to the desktop briefly then BSOD It said Bad Pool Header had a bunch of error numbers which I wrote down It was doing a memory dump and as I was freaking after I wrote down the numbers I shut it down Then I turned it back on my desktop came up briefly and it was the same thing all over By this time I was on hold for Dell tech support and it finished the memory dump and then rebooted itself same thing normal desktop briefly then BSOD same verbage and numbers The Dell tech support guy asked me to do a diagnostic scan which had been done a couple times before and all passed except the optical disk He said it did not matter if the optical disk failed there was no CD in it that s why it failed the test The test did not tell me to put in a CD I could have done that He said to write down any error numbers he would call me the next day The test took hours and every facet of the test passed except the optical disk again I did not receive a call back so I called in I got a guy who had me boot up and press F to do the diagnostic outside windows He said he wanted to listen to any alarms or tones and he wanted me to pay attention to the LED buttons near the screen above the keyboard When it got to the optical disk test it started making lots of obnoxious noise and the lights started a pattern which I related to him He said the noise was beeps- that meant my motherboard was bad Is this possible to diagnose in minutes like this I had spent hours on the phone with perhaps doz... Not sure if this is the correct forum but if not please move or advise which it should be in and I will repost I Freeze-Hardware software? or have acquired a Dell Dimension desktop which came with a clean Freeze-Hardware or software? install of XP Home but I do not think that the drivers were updated I tried to Freeze-Hardware or software? update the drivers from the Dell site but found that a lot of the information regarding updating was Freeze-Hardware or software? either contradictory confusing or otherwise out of date and gave up after attempting to install one Firstly when it boots up there is a message that the system battery voltage is low and to press FK to continue So I assume that it needs a new battery After pressing FK it starts normally When it does boot up it is really slow at everything Then while I am using it without warning the screen goes dark not blue as if it had been turned off but the fan is still running There does not appear to be any output from the video port as the monitor brand name comes up as if it had been turned off It does not respond to the keyboard or CTRL-ALT-DEL or anything else and must be manually shut down by holding the power button in for several seconds and rebooted So far I have installed Firefox Opera Norton AV ZoneAlarm and Open Office How do I determine if this is a hardware problem or an operating system issue or another software issue or some combination nbsp

The problem is some programs are unstable and crash. Firefox 1.06 freezes & crashes 4 secs after launch, photoshop cs2 freezes and then crashes. There is a lag when I am typing. Microsoft Office apps freezes and crashes at times.

I cant figure out the problem. Is the the hardware like RAm that is causing the problem or the Windows OS? Give your opinion. Need help

I was given a computer to refurb, so I need to re-install all of the motherboard drivers and such. However I don't have any of the driver discs so I need to find them on the Internet. issue is that I can't get the ethernet card to work without the drivers, so I need a piece of software that will tell me what is installed on that computer, including the brand and model type, put it on a disc and run it on the other computer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all.
Im having issue with an aio printer/scanner/fax and its software.
the issue is as following:
after uninstalling the software for this unit , if i reinstall the scanner cannot be used via the software anymore. complaining about communication error.
removing HKLM/SOFTWARE/Hewlett-packard from registry, deleting the software entry from Program files, local settings, application data gives the same resoults.
scanning from windows wizard works.

the software also have a procedure for full manuall 4 step uninstallation which also doesnt work.

my question are:
1: is there any way to know the exact registry entries the software installs ?
2: what may possible couse this issue? installing the same unit and software under diff pc works but uninstallation will couse the same issue.
3:is it possible to track the exact registry entry that may be responsible for this communication error between hardware and its software?

thanks in advance

sorry , maybe this is more of a software issue rather than hardware.
i'll repost it in the correct forum

A:hardware or software issue?

The optiplex 740 is supposed to have a set of diagnostic lights of the front panel. See the manual here. Page 52 shows how to access Dell Diagnostics for a set of tests. The power light also changes color to indicate a problem. Edit: Now that Windows 7 is on the computer, the Diagnostic Partition may be gone.

System I not oc'd gig ram Gigabyte Motherboard GTX Power - Crashes or hardware software ? Supply is a Corsair Watt only about a year and a half old I am having trouble figuring out what may be causing Windows to crash It seems that it is fixed and then it isn't Here is what occurred Never had any issues with Windows Updated to around October st I didn't have any crashing with BF beta it was running on just standard Windows Upgraded to because it promised more Crashes - hardware or software ? performance Started to have hard crashes-system would just simply power off and restart mostly when a level was loading not during actual gameplay of Bf Normally I would say that is a power supply issue I purchased a new one over a week ago I didn't install it yet because I wasn't sure if that was the issue Here is the weird thing When I did a system restore after that started happening I wasn't having any crashes at all I would really be taxing the system on purpose I e running two virus scans while playing bf I literally joined over servers and could not recreate the crash I also did the system torture test with no issues I did the system ram test and it was fine I am not sure if the crashes were related to Malware which I found on my system Tonight it crashed twice I tried to do a system restore and all of my system restore points were gone But that will be fixed tomorrow The big question is what could be causing the crashes It seemed hardware related at first but it seemingly was fixed by software

A:Crashes - hardware or software ?

It could be your power supply because BF4 may force your CPU to use more power (also might do this to your GPU & RAM), with 700w you should be fine though but there is still that small chance it could be that. Does the new one have more power than the other one?

i have bought Windows XP Home Edition and when i came to installing it it said these things:

Hardware That Might Need Additional Files
* Intel HaM Fax Voice Modem (modem)
*PCI Multimedia Audio Device (other device)

and

Software That Does Not Support Windows XP
*3DFX Tools (In control panel)
*HaM Configuration (In control panel)

any one help me with this problem so i can install xp and still use my modem and sound

A:Hardware/Software Problems with XP

What you need to do is to see if the manufacturers of the sound card and modem have drivers for Windows XP. Download and save them to a CD if possible.

Failing that, you could still install Windows XP - a clean install rather than an upgrade is the best - and see if XP has drivers you could use but with reduced functionality.

Should XP give you a blue screen on first boot, try Safe Mode and select Generic drivers for the offending device.

The best and least troublesome way out would be to purchase XP compatible replacement sound card and modem.

I am busy with a project that requires the generation of a simple Barcode. I am not familiar with Barcode software and would appreciate some guidance. I need information with respect to both the software and the hardware requirements.

The process is as follows: -

1. Capture member details in database
2. Take passport-type digital photo of member
3. Create a membership card with Name, Photo and Barcode

The purpose of the Barcode is simply to identify the member so as to prevent a non-member from using the member's card. On entry the member will call at the Reception Desk, the card will be swiped and the member's name and photo will be displayed on the monitor.

There is no other purpose for the card. It is simply an ID card linked to a Barcode and a Database Record.

Recommendations with regards to both Software and Hardware would be most appreciated.

My computer won't boot up at all. I formatted the hard drive, using a program that boots from a CD-ROM, and then I tried to reinstall Windows XP, but it still does not work. Even after disconnecting all of the hardware that I can, the Windows XP installation fails.

I must have a hardware problem somewhere in the computer. I would like to find some hardware-diagnostic software that can be put on a CD disk, so that I can boot from the CD and run the software. I have not been able to find anything like that. Can anyone recommend some hardware-diagnostic software that I can run from a bootable CD?

Thank you !!!

Hi!, I know that there is at least one program out there that once installed detects everything you have on you PC and creates a list of components with makes and models. I need something like that because I am trying to fix a computer whose motherboard is a mystery, I can't find the manufacturer's name stamped anywhere on the unit. Any ideas?

A:Not sure if this is Hardware of Software issue.

I see a few hardware issues with your parts.

1 IMO the only chipset to use for an intel build is an intel chipset. When you use a third party chipset like nvidia, you are asking for problems.

2 Next issue is your ram. Did you check that the ram you used is on the approved list for your motherboard? High performance ram very often needs a higher vdimm [ram voltage] set in the bios. Have you done this task?

A:Help with hijackthis log.... hardware or software?

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy
and sometimes a post manages to slip by us.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

If you have the same trouble when you used a different hard drive, then it is very likely to be a hardware problem.

Download and Run ComboFixDownload Combofix from one of the links below :

ComboFix.exe 1
ComboFix.exe 2
ComboFix.exe 3
You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hello everyone!

I've been having problems with my DVD recorder. After recording onto DVD disk, it'll read and recognize all the files EXCEPT it'll stop recognizing recorded .avi files to the point of not even recognizing the disk at all. And it does this AFTER having recognized the disk and played from it several times before. Now it doesn't recognize ANY of the disks that have .avi files recorded on it, BUT will recogize any and all of the other disks: files, images, backups, programs, etc. Just not the .avi files any more.

Does this sound a bit weird or what? Anyone out there have a clue about what is going on? Or is my DVD on the blink?

Appreciate any help on this subject. Thanx.

Hello

I just bought a router (belkin pre-N ) and it has a firewall in it. Do I need to keep a software firewall like ZoneAlarm or Sygate ? Is it more secure ? Or could it cause a problem ?

Thank you!

A:firewall software and hardware

The firewall in the router is excellent for protection against external inbound traffic.

The ZoneAlarm (and other software firewalls) can give both inbound and outbound protection, and give protection from other computers on your local network. It can give you trouble within your network if you don't configure it properly.

Not sure if this is the correct forum but if not please move or advise which it should be in and I will repost I have acquired a Dell Dimension desktop which came with a clean install of XP Home but I do not think that the drivers were updated I tried to update the drivers from the Dell site but found that a lot of the information regarding software? Freeze-Hardware or updating was either contradictory confusing or otherwise out of date and gave up after attempting to install one Firstly when it boots up there is a message that the system battery voltage is low and to press FK Freeze-Hardware or software? to continue So I assume that it needs a new battery After pressing FK it starts normally When it does boot up it is really slow at everything Then while I am using it without warning the screen goes dark not blue as if it had been turned off but the fan is still running There does not appear to be any output from the video port as the monitor brand name comes up as if it had been turned off It does not respond to the keyboard or CTRL-ALT-DEL or anything else and must be manually shut down by holding the power button in for several seconds and rebooted So far I have installed Firefox Opera Norton AV ZoneAlarm and Open Office How do I determine if this is a hardware problem or an operating system issue or another software issue or some combination

A:Freeze-Hardware or software?

First thing to try is to replace the cmos battery
Its model CR2032. Radio Shack or someplace similar will have them for about 5 bucks.
