I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

u can try connecting an external monitor from a desktop if u have one or borrow one and see if that monitor shows anything without sounds to me that your monitor on the laptop has gone bad.. the led modules that light it up have gone bad or your video card might be could also be that the motherboard or hard drive is failing.usually if just the monitor is bad it should load up with no problems.hope this helps u.

I am trying to revive an old Dell 5000e that was passed on to my by my father. Rarely used. It had 128mb ram on two chips installed. I upgraded it with crucial memory chips, 2X256mb. It boots up, and is faster than original, though still quite slow. Problem is, using's memory advisor scan tool, it only sees one module, and lists the other as available. I confirmed using msinfo32.exe, and sure enough, lists 256mb as well. However, in Bios, it lists 512mb installed ram.
Did I miss something? I did update the bios to the latest, but still no good.
It is running WinXP Home Edition.

Anyone can help?

Thank you.

Thank goodness you people are around!!

I'd like to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 8000.
Currently has 256mb RAM - I know it can only go up to 512mb RAM.
Which brand of Memory is best??

Alos, I'd like to upgrade the hard drive also.
Currently has 10GB.
Does anyone know the maximum GB's for this computer hard drive?
Which brand of hrad drive should I buy?

If I get max RAm (512mb) and max hard drive (GB's) would it be
possible to then install Windows XP on to this computer?

Thanks in advance for your help.

i have a friend who has a Dell Inspiron 8000. I can't figure out where to put a wireless card. I do not see any slots for it. Does anyone know if a wireless card can be used with this model? I don't think it had built in wireless. Seemed to old for that.

Thanks for your help

A:Dell Inspiron 8000 Can it be wireless?

According to the specs of that Inspiron, it has two PC card slots on the side of the case....somewhere usually on the right side toward the back of the computer. And no, it's not wireless built in.

It could use a PCMCIA wireless card.

You have to purchase compatible RAM. Go to, and allow it to scan your system to determine what options are available.

You can install Windows XP. I doubt it would run Vista well.

Someone I know just recently gave me an Inspiron 8000 but he says the hard drive is messed up. I try to turn it on and it has the Dell loading screen, then the screen goes black, but then it just going back to the loading screen. It does that process over and over. The hard drive does make a suspicious clicking sound every time the screen goes black. The original OS was Windows ME but I'm not sure what it is now. Should I risk $60 (on newegg) and buy a new hard drive? What should I do?

A:Dell Inspiron 8000 problems

if it si merely the hard drive that is bad. ( and it definitely sounds like the HD is toast) you should get a boot up message about no boot device found etc.

try accessing the bios during boot up, if you can then replacing the hard drive should give you are workable laptop. if he didnt give you the dell xp disk your goiing to need a copy of windows.

This is first post, so please excuse any display of ignorance from me.

I know that the hard drive is bad. It will not let me boot up to try and recover data. Last resort is to send to a data recovery specialist.

If the drive is cool, it will try to boot, but it is looking for a corrupted file, "ntoskrnl.exe" in the \System32 dir (Win 2000 Pro). Is there a way I can transfer this file onto the drive?

I have tried to Repair with the Dell reinstall CD, it does not work. It hangs up during the checking C:\ drive portion. I tried it under the Console Recovery and same thing. Also tried the "fixboot"; it did not do anything for me.

Any Suggestions?

Your help is appreciated.

Hey Nelly,

i'm on my way out for today, but i can tell you this, check out for the inspiron 8000 specifications maybe on the manual if you have it or else, in the internet. I guess 8000s use 3com network cards(not completely sure), so what you need for get that card running is the driver software. If it is a common 3com you can find it here or else, if it is not a 3com card check out the list at for the right card brand you have.

sounds to me like the backlight has gone. Try looking at the screen under both bright and low light to see if you can see an image - if you can this would confirm the diagnosis.

I'd appreciate any advice (particularly if there are better ways than I'm planning) on exactly how to do this. And will it be a problem cloning down from the larger external HD to the smaller new HD??

Hello All.
I have a Dell inspiron 14R n4010, actually working with 4GB ( 2 x 2gb 1RX8 PC3-10600S-9-10B2 1033mhz DDR3).
I am trying to upgrade memory to 8 GB with 2 x 4gb DDR3L - 1600 SODIMM 1.35V CL11  recommended by (
After upgrade memory,  Bios phoenix (version A13) recognize it.  but windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits won't boot.
I read so many post about this problem, but I can't find an answer how to solve it. I tried updating BIOS and did not work. Tried to change memory speed, but BIOS does not leave me to change settings.
Is this memory really compatible with Dell inspiron 14R n4010?  anyone knows how to solve this problem?

A:Windows won't boot after memory upgrade Dell inspiron 14R

Ask Crucial support if you can't get an answer here. Crucial is good for helping with problems like this when you buy memory from them. A13 is the latest bios. IMO 4GB is plenty of ram for this 5 yr old model. Replace the 4GB and use it until you can buy a new computer.

A:Dell dell inspiron - No USB driver installed

To make sure your Going from SATA to USB, if so, then are you using the USB with + or power port.  Depending on the motherboard.  (had the same issue in the E Series Dells)    Also, SATA does not provide power on its own, it needs to be plugged in, or you need to plug the two cables into two usb ports
the cable for it could be One connector, and two on the other side.  The main cable is the data+power, the other is the extra Power.  USB gives Max 3.3V, SATA usually need 5 or 12V to work.
If all else fails pull your CD drive and connect to that if you can.

Dell Inspiron Duo Tablet PC - Touch Screen Laptop | Dell Canada

I just think this tabook would be pretty awesome with Windows 8. any experience?

A:Has anyone installed this on a Dell Inspiron Duo?

I am running Windows 8 consumer preview on a Dell Duo. You'll find other people that have on this forum as well as on

In general it works, but the following has issues...

1) The accelerometer shows up as an unknown device (so not auto rotate)
2) Depending on the network, WiFi will work or not
(for me it works on many networks, but appears to have issues with Cisco AP's)
3) The Dell Duo is limited to 2GB of RAM. It works, but I wish I could put in more - I keep a small flash drive to use ReadyBoost, but I don't know if it is useful.

I do like the Duo a lot with Windows 8. I'm not convinced of Metro for a mouse based system, but for a touchscreen it's very nice.

What you need to do, is to click on this link:
Download Audio Drivers for Dell Inspiron 1525 Notebooks

This will 'download' the audio driver file, R170217.EXE, to your computer. This file (R170217.EXE) will probably end up on your Desktop.

Double-click on this file, to run it. This should re-install the 'audio driver' for your computer.

I did and then it  did what it did before and has not come back on since. They have said it could be the motherboard. Any other suggestions ? Thanks

The audio on my device stopped working. Taskbar audio icon shows a red X as if muted, when you mouse over the icon, it shows the error 'No Audio Device is Installed'. Checked under device manager unable to find sound option. Installed Realtek HD audio drivers from the Realtek website with no solution. Please help?

A:'No Audio output device is installed' Dell Inspiron 15z Windows 10

You can get the drivers from the Inspiron 15z 5523 html page. Use either the Win 8.1 driver (labelled "WB64A") or one of the Win7 ones. First go into Device Manager and right click on the Realtek High Definition Audio Device to open the context menu, then "uninstall" and check the box to "delete the driver software for this device."
When you re-boot Windows will remove the Realtek driver and install its native audio driver. See if audio works. Then you can install an IDT driver over the native driver without removing it first.
If neither the native nor IDT driver helps, try reverting to your previous operating system. If the audio still does not work then the hardware has probably failed. If it does work in the previous OS, then perform a clean installation of Win10 and see if it works.

Try clearing the CMOS, might be the solution. if that doesn't work you could try flashing the bios, here's the documention on how to do both. Just follow the steps exactly and you'll be fine, it requires you to go into the actual computer to do it.

hope it works, good luck

Hi everybody,

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 (Celeron 2.4) with 256MB RAM (two 128MB sticks). A friend of mine gave me a 512MB stick and I happily thought that I finally would be able to upgrade the memory of my old friend. The new memory I got is:

Kingston ValueRAM 512MB 266MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2.5 200 Pin SODIMM

However, when I install the new memory the laptop won't start! The LED blinks for 5-10 seconds and then the computer turns off. When I put back my old memory everything works fine again. I've tried it with the new memory alone in both of the empty slots and also together with one of the two 128MB sticks. I've tried all possible combinations but the laptop simply doesn't start whenever the 512MB module is installed. What's going on? I thought this memory was compatible with the Inspiron. Am I wrong?

I always run the Crucial scanner to see what slots I have, what the maximum is, and what size chips can be added. Having low confidence in my ability to buy the correct product elsewhere I also buy from them, but I understand that they are far from the least expensive.

hi everyone!!

Am stuck with the age old driver provided on the Dell Support site. please help.

A:Latest drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon installed on Dell Inspiron 9100

Download the one at the Dell site found by using your Service Tag. It works fine. If you do not like what it is doing, tell us what it is doing incorrectly. Dell updates that site whenever there is a better driver. Windows Update then updates it accordingly. You will not beat that at the ATI site because they supply the one to Microsoft for use in Windows updates. There are some proprietary features in a lot of the graphics cards used by Dell and other manufacturers that render them not equal to the retail ATI video graphics.

There is no need to wait until the battery runs down to turn off a frozen laptop nowadays. Simply hold down the power button until it shuts off. It will take 30-40 seconds.
You can uninstall updates if you think there is a bad update. Open Settings, Update, Advanced Options, View update History, Uninstall updates. Not all updates can be uninstalled but some can. You should also check the Event Viewer for clues as to what might be hanging up the computer.

A:Dell Inspiron 1100 memory problem

The Dell Inspiron 1100 is infamous for this problem, and sometimes motherboards have to be replaced. The Kingston memory, even though ValueRam, is usually pretty good in that model. It does not like to have mixed memory sizes or speeds.
However, try removing all the old memory, then inserting the new module in slot one, then if that does not work, try slot two. If it doesn't work by itself, it is doomed in your machine. If it does work, then you can try adding
The Inspiron 1100 really works best with memory that is not "value" or lower tier memory, and is PC3200 (400 MHz). See if you can borrow other memory to try. Two modules of PC3200 Sodimms that are exactly the same should give you 1 GB of working memory. There many vendors sell good DDR Sodimm
memory for $15.80 (256 mb) to $25.00 (512 mb) so for $50 you could have one GB, assuming your Inspiron 1100 is working properly.
But we are now seeing so many failed 1100 motherboards for unknown causes, that it might not be worth attempting the changes.

To your question,How much RAM can my computer hold? Most editions of the Windows 7 and  Windows 8 OS are 64 bit. If you are running Starter or Home Basic, your RAM limit is 8GB. The RAM limit for Home Premium is 16GB. If you are running a 32-bit OS, such as Windows XP, Vista 32 or Windows 7 32-bit edition, you have a limit of 4GB of memory. As a side note, that's per slot! That means that can be 8gb (4gb per slot) if using a OS 32bit version and up to 16gb (8gb per slot) if 64bit is running on your laptop!Source? A:Inspiron 8000 display dim

Hi mmann

It could be that the cable connecting the LCD to the laptop has gone bad and is opening up in certain positions. You could also try reseating the connector between the system board and the display. It could be making a bad contact. The same with the other connectors in the LCD display itself.

1. Yes, albeit at a performance penalty.  It's designed for a pair of matched modules.
2.  Either will work by itself.  Don't mix DDR3 and DDR3L though -- if you have DDR3, use that; if L, use that if you're adding a module.
3.  Crucial is hard to beat particularly given its compatibility guarantee when purchased through its memory configurator.  Anything else- ask the vendor about compatibility guarantees (or be sure you understand the possible restocking charge if a return is required).

I purchased some Kingston 2 gig ram modules which are compatible for the system and installed them. The Bios does not register that I have 4 gigs of Ram just the normal 2 gigs. I have updated the Bios incase this was an issue and this did not fix the issue. I have reseated the ram, still just the 2 gigs are registered.

Is there anything else that I need to do for my system to resgister the other 2 gigs of ram for the system.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1564 and I am trying to upgrade the memory to 8GB.  I bought two KTD-L3CL/4G.  It seems to meet all the specs, but when I try to install it I get a message from windows that it can't restart and needs to be repaired.  If I put the old memory back in, it works.  is there something special I have to do to upgrade this memory?  I thought you just shut down windows, pull the battery, unplug, the replace and start back up.....
If I look in Setup at the start, it shows 8GB memory.  The Kingston page says KTD-L3C/4G, no reference to the CL, just the C.  Is there a big difference?  I am using Windows 7 Home version.

A:Dell Inspiron 1564 8GB, Memory fails to upgrade

Below are the memory specs and configuration information on the Inspiron 1564.
The Inspiron™ 1564 system supports dual-channel DDR3 SDRAM with memory speeds of 1066 MHz. At 1066 MHz, this memory offers a significant increase of memory performance over previous platforms.

The memory solution is implemented in a dual-channel configuration, allowing the system to have twice the memory bandwidthwhile using the same memory technology.
Memory modules must be installed as a perfectly matched pair to take advantage of the dual-channel memory bus. If not a matched pair, the system's memory bus operates in a single-channel configuration.

Memory Configuration

Inspiron™ 1564 has two user-accessible SODIMM sockets, both slots can be accessed after removing the base cover. Basically, when both DIMM connectors are populated, the system has optimum dual-channel performance unless channels A and B have different amounts of memory.

4 GB Memory Barrier
The Inspiron™ 1564 system supports a maximum of 8 GB of memory. The Windows® XP as well as 32-bit versions of Windows Vista can only use a maximum of 4 GB of address space. However, the amount of memory available to the operating system is less than 4 GB. Certain components within the computer require memory address space in the 4 GB range. Any memory address space reserved for these components cannot be used by the operating system.

This is a limitation of a 32-bit architecture: the system can only address 4 GB of allocated memory. Allocated memory is made up of physical RAM and any I/O space needed by devices. Normally this is not a problem, but when a system has 4 GB of physical memory, the memory addresses needed to map RAM overlap the space needed for the I/O devices. In this case the need for I/O space takes precedence, and the amount of RAM visible to the operating system is limited to 4 GB minus the I/O allocation.

Hi all,
I have DELL INSPIRON 3250 desktop supported by DDR3L RAM. Is it possible for me to replace DDR3L with DDR4 RAM (Intel 6th Gen I5-6400) and chipset is H110.
Existing RAM : DDR3L 1600Mhz (UDIMM slots)
I tried CRUCIAL website. They only mention DDR3L RAM. Some internet websites mention that SKYLAKE motherboard support both DDR3L(1.35v) & DDR4(1.2v). I assume my motherboard chipset fall under SKYLAKE category.
I don't want to feel disappointed after investing in DDR4 RAM. That's why I want to clarify before buying. If DDR4 shall be supported, what speed I should choose. Also only if DDR3L RAM supported, can I try going beyond 1600 mhz

This all-in-one desktop has and easily accessible panel for maintenance purposes – so does anyone know if the 12 MB RAM (8+4?)  could be upgraded to 16 MB, and the 32 GB SSD drive be swapped out for a larger SSD drive?
I know I could just buy the 27 inch version with more memory etc but I've had a 27 inch Dell monitor before and the reflection on it was terrible, so bad that I had to return it because I just couldn't use it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi Gary hobo,
Dell sends a technician only to replace faulty parts on the system. I would suggest you to purchase a 8GB DDR3L 1600 MHz memory and contact a local techncian who will be able to replace it.

i am replacing hard drive, found a pata 160gb drive and formatted it. i powered it on and wanted to set the boot to cd. it is just freezing on the first page of the setup and will not permit entries or move to other pages. it is not recognizing the existence of the drive either. i can think maybe does not like pata drive (enhanced ATA 100) or maybe drive size is too big. any ideas to figure out problem(s)?

I installed W2K over ME on this laptop and I ca't get the onboard Geforce2GO to be in charge. I installed the driver from Dell (it just replaced the same already installed) and DirectX 8. I went into Display>Adapter>Settings>Advanced but Geforce is not an option. The standard VGA with 16 colors and a tiny running things with no options for the full 1280p the screen is capable of. How do I do this? It should be dead simple.Thanks.

A:Inspiron 8000 display problem

Right click a blank space on your screen and choose properties> settings> advanced> adapter> properties> driver> update driver. If your file is not in the correct format and will not update then choose uninstall instead. Close all those screens and then choose to install the driver you downloaded.

I know it's not much of a monster but I thought it would at least work for MCE.

Any ideas of a work-around or driver set that would allow me to run MCE.

I have a couple of questions about adding memory to my Dell laptop. Will a standard
"256 MB DDR SDRAM, PC2100 / 266 MHz" card work (bought locally at Walmart or RadioShack) along with the factory installed 256MB?

Secondly, where can I get step by step instructions (with pictures) on how to add the memory?

And where can I get a teeny-tiny phillips screwdriver to open the memory compartment?

Hi Cj18370
Thanks for writing to us.
The system supports a max of 8gb memory (as tested by Dell).
Its an easy process to reach the memory module, you have to remove the stand cover, system stand, and backcover and you can see the memory slots.

Hello everyone,

Recently I've restored my Win7 installation using the original install image on the computer.
Since then my sound is not working properly - once every few seconds it jumps and makes weird noises.

I've tried updating the sound card drivers, and/or installing new codecs, but to no avail.
This happens with every music/video file on my computer and also when playing online content. The problem remains with any music/video player (tested WMP, Winamp, VLC, etc...), with speakers or headphones.

A few days ago a friend of mine suggested this might be caused due to a memory issue.
Something about memory paths getting rewired in the wrong way.
I've also noticed that when this happens my mouse pointer is sort of stuck.

If anyone has had this problem and/or knows how to fix it, I'd love to know about it...

Appreciate your help,

A:Sound trouble, could be a memory issue? (Dell Inspiron 1545)

When you restored, did you do it with the "F8" Dell Recovery Partition on the hard drive? Or did you do it manually with discs?

One issue we see on the Dell user forum is that the Dell sound driver must be used for proper operation.

Outdated device drivers such as video can also cause this.

Once you have it backed up then you can try things to fix this. Until then you are risking your precious data.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with Windows Vista. Upon startup, the Dell screen hangs with the F2 and F12 options then eventually goes black with a cursor in the upper left. Windows never loads.

This problem has been occurring for about a week. The first time it happened, an option to repair it automatically came up and it worked fine for a about 2 days. Now, there is not even a repair option. I also tried unplugging the power cord for a few minutes.

I would appreciate any input. Thank you.

When you see the options for the F2 and F12 options start tapping the F12 button, until you see "loading" pop up in it's place. After that a boot menu should pop up, and when it does select Dell Diagnostic Utility.. see if that finds any bad hardware.

A:Dell Inspiron 530 will not boot

That could be hardware or corrupt boot files. Turn the unit off. Take off the side panel find and remove the ram modules, then put them back in, making sure you put them in the right way and they snap firmly into place. If you are sure it's correct turn it on see what it does. It sounds actually like it is not chatting with the hard drive. So if the ram idea does nothing, turn off the unit and unplug the hard drive, and it's power. Turn on the unit and see if you get an error "stating there is no bootable device" present or similar. If it noticed the hard drive is not present with an error message, turn it off, plug the hard drive power and connector cable back in. If it goes back to freezing on the screen, either the hard drive is having issues which you can test for, or windows boot files are corrupt and you need to do a repair of the operating system to get windows loading again. My best guesses....having not looked at it;)

Hello!I have a Dell Inspiron 3200. I haven't got a CD-ROM for it. It can't boot from USB. Only floppy! In BOIS, there is a CD-ROM, but I don't know why. When I boot it from bootable floppy in Safe Mode it stucks after loading Mup.sys.I ejected its HDD and connect it to my other working laptop's USB for reset registry manually according the instructions, checkdisk and other maintenance tasks . After placing it back to Dell Inspiron, Windows still can't start. Please help on what to do to make Dell starting its system.

A:Dell Inspiron 3200 can't boot. Please help!

From what I could find, there are several different versions of the Inspiron 3200. They all seem to come with 16MB non-removable RAM + 2 memory slots that handle up to 64MB each, so the max RAM is 144MB. How did you arrive at 256MB? you're seeing the Safe Mode option, the system is attempting to boot from the HDD, not the floppy. Mup.sys is not the problem. The fact that it's displayed on the screen means that it's been loaded. The next file to load is the one causing the system to lock up. The system is too old to boot from USB so don't bother to try. Do not connect any USB devices until after Windows has loaded. Make sure the BIOS is properly configured & the boot order is correct. Make sure the floppy is 1st in the boot order, HDD should be 2nd. If no CD drive is installed, disable it. What you need to do is create a Win2000 Emergency Repair Disk (floppy), boot off it, & then attempt a repair.

A:Dell Inspiron Laptop won't boot

This does not appear to be a Malware issue. Winzip Registry Optimizer is a legit program, but you have learned the hard way how much damage a registry optimizer can do to your system, chances are it has messed up the registry resulting in all the problems that you now have.

There are two ways to deal with this. Take the hard drive out of the system and hook it up to a desktop PC using the internal wiring (or externally using a USB adapter) and format the OS partition, taking great care not to touch the Recovery partition. You should then be able to re-fit the hard drive and run the Factory Restore.

Another method would be to use Gparted which you can download from Here

You need to burn the ISO to a CD which you can then use to boot the faulty PC. It can then be used to format the OS drive and set the Flags so it will boot up directly from the Recovery partition which will allow you to reinstall the OS.

If you need further instructions then please ask.

Sounds like the hard drive has failed, but you may be able to recover files by installing a new drive. Remove the old hard drive and put it aside. Format and install Windows on the new drive. Buy an external USB enclosure and install the old drive into it. Attach the USB enclosure to the laptop and see if you can access the files

You are likely going to have your best luck reformatting the hard drive, unless you have the software to boot up and run a repair install. The Dell Windows disks are not good at running the repair option, but a borrowed Windows OEM disk of the same Windows version will do it, and use the Dell Sticker product ID.
A more experienced technician can usually fix the problem for you in an hour or less.

I have a Dell Inspiron m that crashed the other day The blue screen had IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL error code At the time I didn t have time to figure out what was wrong so 640m Inspiron Dell won't boot I shut it down and returned a few hours later to run diagnostics However when I tried to boot it up it wouldn t load past the Dell loading screen and Dell Inspiron 640m won't boot I couldn t access diagnostics I turned off and tried it again and now it won t boot anything All I have is a black screen The CD drive and fan will click on for a second and then immediately turn off I tried running the reinstallation disk but nothing but black screen Someone told me to try taking the battery out and reseating it so I did that this morning and now it is still not booting up black screen and I have a new problem This time the fan and power light came on when I tried to start it but when I tried to shut it down I can t get it to shut off Holding the power button does not work The fan has been running for about hours today with no signs of stopping I unplugged it thinking the battery would die and at least shut the fan off but the battery should have died by now and it is still running I don t want to do any further damage if that s possible at this stage so can someone help Some background information on this computer This is the th time this year that it has crashed The last time the tech installed a brand new hard drive That was about mo ago and it has been running fine until the other day I have already put a ton of money into it and don t really want to invest anymore in a lost cause Should I just give up and plan on buying a new laptop or can this one be saved Thanks nbsp

Remove the hard drive and see if the laptop will start up normally to the point of hard drive detection. If it does, the hard drive is bad, once again

Hi folks.

I recieved a laptop from a friend that was running slow and he asked me to look at it. I backed up his data and restored it to an earlier setpoint. It was still slow. I shut it down and restarted it but it took a long time to restart, so I pressed the power button and kept it pressed until it shut down. When I went to restart it, the power light stayed on for approx 5 seconds and then went off again. It now does this all of the time!!

Any ideas? I'd be very greatful.

hey michael,

possible problems and solutions:

- blowing out the laptop's fan and ram card(s), might have to open laptop completely, be careful! (cause -overheating)

- remove any added components (external usb connections ext.)

- remove any disc in cd/dvd-drive

- memory stick failure (test by changing memory)

- your battery, power supply or internal regulator might also be faulty

consider taking it to specialist if the above didn't help you.

good luck!
