resetting/upgrading old compaq bios

Q: resetting/upgrading old compaq bios

I have an old compaq presario 2275 that I thought would be fun to get running again. The problem is that when I try to reload win 98 I keep having problems since I don't have the original factory recovery disk. Does anyone have a way to reset the bios other then removing the battery? Is there a flash upgrade someone knows about? I have tried google but to no avail.

Preferred Solution: resetting/upgrading old compaq bios

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

dear former druggie

What makes you think that resetting the bios is going to help you with this situation??

I can't see what benefit it would be. You need to get an OS install disk of some flavor.

I baught a machine from a friend and I spent a great deal of money on it. It's a Dell GX 520 Optiplex. The moron who had the machine before me put an admin password in the BIOS, so I can't change the boot order to CD first to boot from cd and reinstall windows. I need the admin password to boot from CD. So i'm going to reset the bios.
Question: How do I reset the bios? I already tryed pulling out the battery and unplugging the machine for a long period of time and putting it back in. That does not work. I read that I need to reset the pins or something on the motherboard? I couldn't find the make/model on the board. It might be this: foxconn (foxcom) L S-36; there's also a chip I believe that's the BIOS that says Intel on it.

Please help.

I want to change the boot order on my PC so that the HD is the first unit to boot.  I have gone into my BIOS to make the adjustment, but it doesn't seem to hold the adjustment.

A:Resetting My BIOS

Is the date and time correct?
When you change the boot order are you pressing F10 to save the changes?
What is the make and model of this computer?
The drive with the operating system (usually C: drive) is the first device in the boot order by default.  What is the first device in the boot order if it isn't the hdd/sdd?
One possibility that could cause this would be the CMOS battery failing.

Hi all, can you help please,?  I have a Packard Bell imedia desktop pc, I want to change the bios settings to enable the CD to boot first. The current setting is, Prim Master HD, Prim Slave empty,
Sec Master C/D, Sec Slave DVD.  I 'd like to change it to,  Prim Master C/D, Prim Slave empty, Sec Master HD, Sec Slave DVD.  The Bios is Ambios New Setup Utility version 3.31a.  I have managed to move the C/D to the Master Prim position but then the HD doesn't appear in the window to enable me to move it to Master Slave.  Would appreciate any help or suggestions, as basic as possible please, thanks Roy

A:resetting bios

Sound like you are confusing primary and master with drive boot order. (Or maybe I'm just confused.) It doesn't matter if your CD drive is primary slave, secondary master, or whatever - you can still set it to be the first drive in the boot order.

I have an athlon 2000+ on a biostar M7VIQ motherboard. At first it would only see the processor as 1.25ghz. I changed the cpu frequency to 133 mhz from 100mhz and the processor was then recognised properly. Only problem is that i have to reset the bios every time i start up. It starts to boot and loads the default bios settings. I can continue into windows but once i restart, i have to reset the bios or i just get a blank screen. The ram is pc2100 256mb.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have had this same problem on a computer with an MSI 651ML motherboard and on a Compaq Deskpro en pentium 3.

Even though the battery is fully charged and the battery is firmly installed in the holder the BIOS always goes back to default settings and loses time and date settings after power has been unplugged. Is that just a defective mobo?

A:Resetting Bios Passwords?

Turn off the computer, and disconnect it from the mains.

Now open up the computer, and remove the cmos battery for a few minutes.

The battery is about the size of a nickle.

Be sure to only hold the battery by it`s edges, and not top and bottom, as this can discharge the battery.

Replace the battery, the cmos should now be reset to the default settings, and the bios password should now have been removed.

You will need to go into the bios in order to reset the confguration.

If you download the free Everest programme. It will give you lots of info about the system. You can get the programme from HERE

This will allow you to identifiy most of the system components, so that you can for example search online for a mobo manual etc.

Once you can get into the computer you will be able to format the hdd just like any other.

Hello, i was wondering what does resetting to BIOS or CMOS exactly do.

What is the difference between those two?

What are the risks?

Does it wipe my programs?

If there is a high chance my motherboard will die, should i consider using a recovery disk?

My main problem is I really can not find a solution, i might try a few more things before taking more extensive methods.

That's pretty much all there is to it. I overclocked my computer too far, reset the bios to fix it and when i got back on MSN and AIM failed to work. Yahoo still does, and if i try trillian i can still connect to AIM, but MSN wont let me connect.

Actually thats slightly inaccurate, i COULD log onto both AIM and MSN for about 12-14 hours after resetting my bios but now i get errors. I can still log on on my laptop though.

I get error code 80048820 for MSN
and i get a simple connection failed with AIM which then asks me to auto configure or change settings.

I have tried re-installing MSN which didnt work, ive also tried fooling with both of their settings and that didnt work either. Everything else works just fine. Not quite sure what to do =/
thanks for any help!

I think I have located the bios battery (looks like a watch battery next to FirstBios Notebook Pro C2) I see it has a plus side which runs underneath the battery and a negative side which is connected to the top of the battery. There is no wiring on this so I am pretty sure i need to short circuit the battery in order to reset the bios. Do I just have to connect the plus side to the negative side? or is there anything else.

Also, it could be that the PSU in that system is not powerful enough to feed that monster video card.

A:Need help resetting Jumper/BIOS settings

In order to reset your cmos you need to do one of two things.

Either use the jumper on the mobo you mobo book should tell you how to do this or take out the cmos battery for about 20 seconds being careful only to hold the battery by it`s edges not top and bottom then put the battery back in and reboot your bios should now be at the default settings.

You may need to go into your bios in order to reset some of your settings.

I am basiclly teaching myself how to work on computers and I am stuck, I have a compaq 5001r that i use mostley for games but it is also the one i am tweeking with, the mother board is a O6E-4h with an AMD spitfire (Duron) processor, OLD GAMES, I have seen a lot of processores but some have diffrent voltages and such with the same A socket 462, I am looking to upgrade to at least a ghz or more but I am confused how do I select the right processor, how do I know it will work and what do I have to do once installed,

A:Upgrading CPU in compaq 5001r

Your ability to upgrade will depend on your motherboard's BIOS (what processor will it recognise) and the how high its Front Side Bus will go.

I did a little research and it looks like your going to be stuck with a 200MHz FSB which will severly limit your processor choices. I think you could get up to an Athlon 1600+ if your motherboard supports the processor in its BIOS.

My meager reference material.

I have a compaq presario and that is in serious need of a new processer. The one I currently have is a cyrix M II-366 at 250mhz. I origenally had plans to overclock it but I feel it would be best to leave it be and buy a new processer. what I wanted to know is would I have to buy a new motherboard inorder to upgrade it to 1gig? By the way, you would'nt happen to know why it says 366 and runs at 250. All your help is greatly appreciated.

Look in your manual. Compaq has the upgrade path documented very well in it. I really doubt your FSB is at 250MHz tho

I have a Compaq computer, which originally had 64 MB of SDRAM. I recently bought 512 MB SDRAM. I try to install it, and - the monitor won't do anything. It will work if the old chip is still in place, though. However, the system won't register the 512MB chip either way. This was a major upgrade for me, and I need this to work. I need your help, and would appreciate any given.

I bought Windows 7 having come from Vista. However, there is a BIOS update for my system. The new BIOS update states: The BIOS updates the fan control algorithm of the system, and turns the fan on at low volume while your notebook PC is operational. If you are currently experiencing any symptoms on your notebook PC, please contact HP for support. It is located here:

I'd love to flash it but not sure if it will ruin my computer as it's more than likely not designed for flash when Windows 7 is on it or do you's know any better?

I also have 2 blue vertical lines going do the right hand side of the screen. I've seen loads of problems but no solutions. Has any fixed this HP problem?

Cheers folks!

A:Upgrading BIOS after Upgrading from Vista to 7

The BIOS is the stuff that happens BEFORE Windows starts to load.
Do you have issues with overheating or with the fan? If so, the BIOS update is for you.
Also, BIOS flashes are dangerous - and you can turn your computer into a paperweight by doing it incorrectly. In short, if it ain't broke - don't fix it!

The type of lines that you describe on your screen are usually caused by hardware issues. Send it in for repair if the system is under warranty. If not, then get an estimate from a local computer store - it may be cheaper to live with it.

I'm trying to install Windows 2000 Professional on my Compaq Presario 1275 notebook, but Setup hangs at the text screen "Setup is starting Windows 2000."

I contacted HP and they basically said "Your computer was made for Windows 98" and "screw you." I've tried disabling USB and API support and specifying a different HAL, as suggested by Microsoft, but nothing's worked yet.

Also, there's no usable floppy drive, so that's something fun to work around.

A:Advice on upgrading my Compaq Presario

OCZ StealthXtream 600W is good, it should be around 60 .
The recommended power is actually for the whole system, not just the card, but it's always better to have a little extra, if for nothing else then for not to load the PSU at 100% (will last longer).
ATX is ATX, pretty much so. Some high wattage+high quality units are ATX 2.7 or 2.9 or whatever (basically just longer than 2.2, the today standard)

Anyways, on a budget, go for Radeon HD 4670 instead, it should be faster than the crippled version of 8800 GT, cheaper too, and you can get an IceQ cooled version to kick all the heat the card generates straight out of the case... I'll give you a link pair that I like to hand out for mid-range gaming graphics upgrade: and... hey, wait what? PC Power & Cooling Silencer 500 W is not there anymore? well, let's get OCZ STX 600 W then...

Hi all. My Compaq's original 20GB hard drive bit the dust awhile back, and I want to install a new one. (I don't have the recovery disks, but expect to buy a new XP OS anyway.)

Is there a simple place where I can find out what drives are compatible, and what the maximum capacity is that i can install? The HP support website recommends an IDE drive first, then E-IDE, then ATA, but that's as far as it goes...

Thanks -

First, given the size of the resident drive, make sure your system has enough juice to run XP happily, i.e. 512MGs of ram....minimum.

Next, Google your mobo; U may get some specific info on how large an IDE drive it can support and if there are any bios flashes to support more.

U could also email the Mfg and they might well give you this info based on yr individual system.

"Integrated graphics using nVidia GeForce 6150SE" This is the on-board graphics chip. Your power supply is only 250 watts. This will severely limit any graphics card addition, so plan on changing the power supply if you add a video card. A power supply of 350 watts or bigger will work. Windows XP 32-bit will only support or see 3GB or so of system memory

It is kind of in the air. Could be the memory, you might want to check and make sure that it is the same speed ect. Or it could be vista. The thing with companies like HP, Dell, etc. is their cases are designed so that they try to force the buyer to go through them for upgrades costing considerably more $.

Measure your power supply's dimensions and we'll take it from there. Also, make sure your motherboard can handle an upgrade to this card.

Wel, first and foremost, check the games system recommendations (which I am sure you have). Your processor speed should be suffecient but if you are looking to upgrade make sure it can handle it. There are programs that will run a diagnostic and give you upgradability information like SandraLite, even hijackthis. Hello,   I have two questions that perhaps somebody might help me with regarding the HP Compaq 7600 Ultra Slim (Base) computer. Quesition 1: The motherboard has three memory slots instead of 4, does this mean that the memory can be only upgraded to 3 gig s? I currentlly have three 512  memory chips for total of 1.5 Gig, but I would like to upgrade to the maximun which I believe is 4 gig. (I had tried using two 1 gig  chips and 512, but they did not work because the 1 gig were 6400's.) Question 2: I tried various ways to install a PCI-E video card but I do see how it will fit. The back panel had a scsi interface inside a PCI riser card. I removed the SCSI card, but no matter how I tried I do not see how the card will fit. Doesn't any body have picture as to how it must be inserted ? Thank you

A:Anyone know how to enter the BIOS of a HP/Compaq?

I haven't looked up the power requirements for a 6670 but I think I can safely say you'll need a new power supply, preferably a reliable brand. If you still wanna get into the bios you could try the "delete" key.

Is there a way to change the bios...the one I currently have does not give option to change FSB or multiplier...or if possible; install a bios that supports these options.

A:Bios no good in Compaq, help

Yes, you can update the bios, following your manufacture (Hp/Compaq) specifications

I've just wondering what's the latest BIOS update for Compaq Presario 5129EA model. I know that Compaq sucks, but it would be nice if there's a newer BIOS update than a version of year 2002. ->

A:Compaq BIOS update?

Is there a particular reason why you would need an update?

If that Presario has a generic ATX motherboard instead of a Compaq proprietary solution then you could look in the real manufacturer's website for a BIOS with possibly more features.

I have been learning all I can about tweaking BIOS settings (overclocking, etc.) only to find out that Compaq allows verrrry limited access to the BIOs. I am trying to tweak two different machines both Compaq and both AMD, a K6-2 and an Athlon. Any suggestions on how to get into some action here, people?

A:compaq BIOS debacle

Try to find out who has made the mobo, and if it corresponds to any other mobo that the manufacturer makes (i.e. Compaq only uses a special cut down BIOS).. If so, download a BIOS update from the mobo manufacturer, and install that...

NOTE!: By installing a different BIOS than the one which came with the board, you might end up with a dead mobo, in which case you'll have to call up Compaq and buy a new one (or find one somewhere else)... You also void your warranty doing this...

I have a HP compaq dx 2400 microtower with Win 7 ultimate on it.
Everytime I apply power to the machine it turns on. I want it true on only when the power
button is pushed.
I push the F10 key to get into bios setup as shown in the HP boot up menu. When I do that
I do not get into Bios. I get a windows 7 menu that shows some kind of boot edit.

How do I get into HP bios to make power startup changes?
Thank you,

A:Getting into HP compaq Bios Setup

Everytime I apply power to the machine it turns onClick to expand...

If you mean when you plug in the system it pw ON, that is either a pw supply failure or a mb failure OR [very] remote chance of a failed switch/wiring. Usually the switch does not fail however anything can break. To test, swap in a known good pw supply. Given the age of that system, it is not worth putting much money into repairing. If the pw supply fixes the problem, great. If not, it [your system] is not worth installing a new mb. With big box systems, you either purchase the board from the mfg [prohibitively expensive] OR you attempt to install a standard board into the hp case; sometimes that works and sometimes it does not. Big box systems are proprietary ie the case, board, etc are made to HPs specs NOT industry standard specs. In addition, if you install a different mb, you need a new copy of windows, you cannot use the oem version of windows.

One other item, win7 ultimate did not come on this system. It came with vista. How did win7 ultimate get installed?

I have a compaq presario. The bios are poop. Does anyone know if there is a way to update the bios with areal manufacturer? Or am I stuck with compaq's bios? It would be really nice if there was a way to find out who makes the bios for them and update it. Any info would be great. Thank you in advance!

A:Compaq Presario Bios

You need to get the BIOS from Compaq. While the board maybe MADE by another company, who knows what slight changes to the specs were made.

When you do your next upgrade, build your own and get a real BIOS.

Like working on a NEW Dell PC, almost NO Options, no Temp monitors nothing.. junk... its a DELL!

Hi, I am trying to change my HDD mode from IDE to AHCI. My laptop is a HP Compaq 6715b running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The motherboard make is HP. I can get into the BIOS but it has hardly an options that I can see of use (Overclocking,Voltages HDD..) So I did some research about updating and flashing, So I went over to the HP website and downloaded a update, It says my BIOS cannot be updated from windows so I then tried to make a disk and that failed. I have tried and tried and am hoping one of you guys can help me out.
Basically I need a way to change my HDD to AHCI or unlock every setting on my BIOS or a way to get to this setting by any means possible.

If you need any more info on my system then feel free to ask.

Thanks Guys.

A:HP Compaq 6715b BIOS?

Enabling AHCI is nothing like overclocking a hard drive, which doesn't exist. AHCI under most circumstances gives little to no benefit to mechanical hard drives, in some cases it can actually perform worse especially if paired with certain AHCI drivers.

I'm surprised that its not in AHCI mode already, generally Windows Vista and 7 generation laptops ship with AHCI enabled by default.
Have you properly verified its not enabled?

Also take a look at this:
Use the same methods except instead of disabling AHCI, enable it.
