I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What operating systems are running on the computers you are trying to connect?

And, on each computer, are you running Windows firewall or do you have another firewall product installed?

I just had some questions on file sharing between a pc and macbook pro Background So I recently bought a macbook pro and transferred all my music to the macbook I now want to access modify and reorganize this music on my mac from my pc Bopth computers are in the same room My pc connects to the internet via ethernet through a router the local pc mbp networking between and macbook connects local networking between mbp and pc through wifi im running xp on my pc and lion on the mac last night I successfully created a public sharing folder between the two- where my pc could access the macbook public folder It was however extremely slow at times It acts strangely There are times where it is extremely slow -for example when I tried to load some of the music from my mac onto my pc s itunes itunes froze for minutes when I tried loading songs onto a playlist after that it seemed to work fine and was switching between songs on my command very quickly without issues However there were occasions where the song would just randomly stop playing and itunes would automatically cue the next song on the list I imagine this is because the macbook goes into sleep mode when its not being used and cuts the wifi but I am not sure -another example would be when im trying to access the public folder from my pc in windows explorer When I open a page that contains a shortcut to the public folder at this point I havent even opened the public folder but opened a folder that contains a link to the public folder I notice a fair bit of lag in the response of windows explorer -and there will be the random times where windows explorer just becomes unresponsive for a few minutes but then works fine after I m not quite sure what to make from this basically my goal is to have all my music on the macbook hard drive and be able to access them from my pc as you might have caught on im trying to create a setup for my laptop djing I ve read on forums that I could alternatively buy a special cord that plugs into the ethernet port of both computers to create a direct link between the computers however I do still use internet on my pc which doesn t have wifi capabilities so that s out of the question I don t want to use a external hard drive cause of portability issues and the tedious process of constantly updating one computer s library etc does anyone have any sigguestions on how I could improve the performance of the file sharing or maybe a whole different way of file sharing and also on a side note does anyone know of a way to keep a macbook from disconnecting to wifi lots of question and I hope I went into enough detail or not too much hah thanks nbsp

I have to admit that recently I have been trying to clean up my computers by deleting programs and unused files and turning off a lot of start-ups and something else which I did not think I would need them without knowing what they were OK so everyday I have found that things are not working right ever since However so far I have fixed problems of audio and printer by making the SERVICES quot automatic quot and quot started quot I presume that most problems I have now have to do with services My way networking only one local now! works networking local networking only works one way now! isn t working right so I looked at the services dependency and made them all automatic and started However I might miss some services for the networking to work right or other causes might exist otherwise My desktop is using Vista while the laptop Windows Before I cleaned both computers more cleaning local networking only works one way now! on the desktop though networking worked completely well But now the laptop name is shown under the networking of the desktop but not the other way around When I looked at the networking tab under control panel everything looked fine and connected File sharing was fine Nothing looked wrong yet the desktop os Vista name is NOT shown under networking on the laptop windows Please help Thanks nbsp

A:Networking says Access: Local only

More info about your environment is needed.

Firstly,let's get this.

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum

Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING www.yahoo.com
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
______

Then look at device manager.Should be no error indicators and network adapters status should be working properly and enabled.

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Has this ever worked ?
If so,when did it go South ? Changes ?Hardware/ Software ?

Hi Experts,

I'd like your help in solving a problem I have with Vista and an ad-hoc peer-to-peer wired network.

When I run the wizard to connect to a network, it does not show the add ad-hoc network option, only four others for wireles, internet and vpn connection.

Also, although I have networked two PC's both running Vista, I cannot ping the second machine from the first and vice versa despite having added routes to both machines.

nslookup recognises the ip address of each machine, as does tracert

(I should point out that both machines obtain their iP addresses from a router which also allows access to the internet. Both machines can see the internet).

I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction

A:Local Area Networking Issue

I am unfamiliar with what you mean by "ad-hoc peer-to-peer wired network".

Could you describe it?

A:Networking local wireless router with 3G USB modem?

No, you can not connect a USB modem to the router. You can make one computer connect to the internet using that modem and then share that internet to all the others through the router.

To configure the router, follow the guidelines for using two routers (plenty of threads and isntrucions on the net for that) imagining that the modem computer is the "primary" router.

Hi,
I had a previous thread where guys helped me set up a local network in my house. The result was that my Norton Firewall was preventing the network from being set up. I have turned on Windows Firewall instaed and deactivated the Norton Firewall. The rest of the Norton Internet Security 2007 is doing it's thing still.
My new questions is "Is the windows firewall good enough against viruses etc?". My Orange router has a hardware firewall already. I would appreciate some advise as I use the computers for internet banking etc.
Many thanks.

Hi i have been getting this issue randomly now for the last few days and have been unable to find any information via Google searches that fix the issue

basically after a im-proper shutdown or just randomly my networking stops functioning i cannot view my LAN or wireless card, nor see or manage shares on the PC, this is a fresh install of Vista 64 bit Enterprise, however the internet keeps functioning just all shares and LAN browsing ceases to work

doing a "sfc /scannow" from a elevated cmd does nothing to fix the issue nor does it find any probolems

Hi i was wondering if anyone has found a solution on this forum

Recently when my satellite internet expert knowledge?) ISP/Networking (Anyone Issue networking with ceased to work for over hours I contacted my ISP Hughesnet After doing the usual dumb routine that other satellite internet users probably know he concluded ISP/Networking Issue (Anyone with expert networking knowledge?) that my internet was ISP/Networking Issue (Anyone with expert networking knowledge?) not working because I did not have my IP address set to obtain automatically I have been using this internet for two months and this has never caused an issue before Even though after arguing with him and ISP/Networking Issue (Anyone with expert networking knowledge?) changing it to make him happy it came on about seconds later I refuse to believe that was my true issue So I was wondering if anyone with a lot of networking knowledge could verify that this was indeed the problem I would like to change it back because I had set my own IP address for a reason Edit The thing that makes it even harder to believe him is that I had my modem hooked directly to the computer when I called and he had me run ipconfig and insisted that I was connected to a router He said that whatever it is that he asked for in this information had indicated I WAS connected to a router I was not I was seriously connected directly to my modem We argued about it for at least minutes nbsp

Ok, just upgraded to Windows 10 this week and been bashing my head bloody for two days on networking issues. What on the green Earth are my networking credentials in Win10? I have a Microsoft account I'm logging into Win10 pc with (which I hate but besides the point), everything is asking me for credentials, and I put in the email address and password I log into Windows with and it doesn't work. I have a network with a workgroup and homegroup set up, and my Win7 pc and Win8 pc have no problems talking to each other but My Win10 can't access the win7 pc, though it accesses the Win8 pc just fine. I also can't access a WDMyCloud on my network, it keeps asking me for Windows credentials and nothing I put in works, it does not like the email address/pass I use to log in to Windows 10 either. I'm literally stumped. Can someone help me out?

Hi We upgraded our desktops from Windows XP to Windows Admin Local Admin Group Rights local without Assign with Windows XP we used the resource kit s CDROMLOCK EXE to lock down CD and DVD Once installed a user had to be in the local administrators group to access a CD or DVD on that desktop For Windows it is not Windows compatible so I run the EXE in Vista SP- Compatibility mode which works perfect My question With a user in the local admin group they have access to the CD and DVD but also have full access to the desktop which is of concern Does anyone know how to assign a user name Either local Desktop or a Server domain account to a Assign Local Admin Rights without local Admin Group service or Exe Is there a way to either create a folder with full rights and then put the exe in the folder giving the user full admin rights to the folder or assign full admin rights to s single EXE file I am just not sure how Windows controls local admin rights other than the local Admin Group If Assign Local Admin Rights without local Admin Group this is in the wrong group please move Thanks B nbsp

A:Assign Local Admin Rights without local Admin Group

You should be able to right-click on the exe file, then choose properties. On the "Compatibility" tab, there should be a checkbox for "Run as administrator", which you can check (enable) and save settings.

Hello I found this forum out of necessity I have done a folder folder Sync pc local local office on w/ Surface Pro??? on fair share of googling this question without any luck resolution Hopefully someone here will have a useful answer I use a program at my office that stores data Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro??? in the Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro??? local program folder on my pc However i also use this program on my tablet surface pro these are both windows devices respectively so i'm hoping that works to my advantage Most of the resolutions i found on google involved using my OneDrive however the Local folder is approx GB depending on the number of projects so this is not an option I would rather find a solution that does not involve an external HDD at this is just one more piece of equipment to carry and i worry about performance issues while working on the projects In my opinion the ideal solution is Use the program while i am at the office the files save to the Local folder on my PC and then when my tablet is awake the modified files automatically sync over our wifi connection The wifi aspect isnt a deal breaker i am fine with syncing via a USB cord as well The main goal is i want the projects data from the Local folder to sync with either my PC or my tablet depending on which file has the most recent time stamp So obviously if i work on a project during the week and need to view modify it outside the office any changes made will sync to the PC the next time I connect via the wifi or USB I am also open to alternative solutions that i may be missing Cross posted to Windows Forum as well

A:Sync local folder on office pc w/ local folder on Surface Pro???

I would agree that having a cloud storage would be nice should the office server go down. You do know that you don't have to sync the entire share folder and programs right? You can sync just individual files that are actually being used and changed. As far as extra storage goes, no need to tote around an external HD. Why not get a couple USB 3.0 flash drives or sdcards? And I really do mean get 2-3, just in case one should fail you have some kind of a backup. You can never rely on a single backup.

I might need to setup a network between a Mac and a PC for someone. As far as I can know there are two software packages to give full network functionality on all machines. PC MacLan and DAVE. Does anyone have any advice on which one to choose? What are the significant differences between them (besides which computer they are installed on)?

Thanks

I'm tearing my hair out !
(And there's not that much of it.)

I have a set of laptops (used in a school classroom). They connect to the LAN via wireless .. or, at least, they used to.

Specifically: Toshiba SP2100 with D-Link AirPlus G+ wireless PCMCIA cards.

After trying many, many things:

- Boot SP2100 from XP CD (SP2)
- Don't fix any of the driver issues
- Plug wireless card in
- Cancel plug&play
- Install correct driver with d/loaded Setup_v204.exe
- WZC managing wireless connection
- Sees wireless network (WEP) but
- Won't connect automatically (after setup wizard)
- Won't connect manually
BUT ..
- Boot into "safe mode with networking" and wireless works faultlessly

I've got to be missing something really simple.
Please, please can anyone tell me what it is ?

Thanks !

I once ran across a simple UI item that allowed me to change LOCAL CONNECTION 2 to LOCAL CONNECTION.

It wasn't in the registry, and I am not referring to changing the name of the local connection itself. Just want to drop the "2" designation.

Anyone happen to recall where this is done? Frustrating to forget something that was easily accomplished in the past. ^_^ Thanks.

A:internet 'access' keeps changing from 'local and internet' to 'local only'

This happens when the router/dsl/cable modem loses its connection with the internet but your wireless connection between your computer and the wireless router stays up (local only).
The next time this happens run in and take a look at the WAN light on your dsl modem to verify that it is red or flashing orange (depending on your modem). Most likely the connection has dropped but the modem will restore the connection automatically when the line is good again. This is an ISP issue and you should call them when you are having trouble and ask them to diagnose the line. You will have to insist because it takes more than 2 microseconds of their time and you know how valuable they believe their time can be.

Hello All,

I just installed Windows 7 Home Pre x64 on my computer. When i was installing i mistakenly didnt format the hard drive befor reinstalling, neither did i parition the drive. Now in my Local Disk Drive (C there is a folder in it called "Local Disk". This folder contains all the computer files, user files, and program files. In the root directory of the Main C Drive, the tw program files folders appear, with the Windows folder also. There is also a folder that says Windows.old, Windows.old.ooo. What do i do?

A:Local Disk folder in Local Disk C

I would reinstall delete the old partition and create a new 1 unless you are wanting to save any of your old files. The windows.old are your old files. You have two operating systems on the same partition, I believe.

Hello,

Recently, Id say about a couple of days now I keep getting LOCAL ONLY when I'm on the internet.. and it just randomly just comes and goes.

It's annoying and frustrating at times when I'm trying to use the internet.

Does anyone have any clue as to why??
Any updates I can do and such...??

My Router is Netgear
My network adapter is Atheros Ar5007
My internet is CLEAR

IDK if any of that info could help..

I have unplugged the cables on the back of router and modem and plugged back and internet will come back but it could be a coincidence since I'm noticing that it randomly comes and goes. The router is in the other room, I am connected to it wirelessly.

I appreciate your knowledge in advance. Thank you.

Hello monirlz, and welcome to Vista Forums!

The Internet Protocol: IPv6 sometimes causes issues like this. You can disable IPv6 and just use IPv4. Here is a link to one way to disable IPv6: How to disable certain Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) components in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008

Evening all

Bit of a problem with the new router...! Have just installed Virgin Media through cable modem and Netgear WGR614 to my Dell Inspiron 1720 wirelessly. At the mo, I am connected through it, but when I close the lid (hibernate) and then open up again, the router will only connect to a local only network. The only way I can fix this is by connecting to the router via a LAN wired connection, and rebooting the laptop, then I have the wireless back on again. As you can imagine, this is not ideal at all!

First of all, does this make sense? If so, any ideas on how to sort it?

Ta very much!

Hello. this is my first post and i have been trying to find a solution to my problem. My problem is I am trying to connect to a wireless network. It connects but it starts off with it saying limited connectity and then it goeds to Access: Local only. Then I researched and i clicked on the IPv6 box and t worked. This time it doesnt work. I dont think I need to install any drivers or updates bc my PC is a couple of months old. Its a toshiba Satellite A215-S4757. 64bit.

A:Local Only

If you haven't done so - do a complete hardware reset on your router. This fixed my "Local Only" issues (had to do so again when major security updates were installed). I'm no network engineer, but it seems that something in the router code makes Vista a bit unsure about the safety and limits the connection to local.

Good luck!

A:What to do with old XP PC-local net maybe

XP and win7 computer are connected both wired to same router? If so... it doesn't use the router part at all. It uses the switch that's built inside the router.

Speed should be 100mb (or 1Gb if using gigbit port). Divide by 8 and you have Bytes instead of bits. About 30% of communication is overhead btw.

Why use tightvnc or any other vnc flavor? That works great for remote control. But you don't need it for windows file sharing.

Since yesterday, and for no apparent reason at all, my computer keeps losing internet connection (but local still stays). Every 10 or so minutes the computer disconnects from the internet and when I put my mouse over the network icon in the task bar, it says Local Only. Not only that, but even when I do have full connectivity, the internet is extremely slow, and I can't seem to maintain a stable connection. I'm using cable internet, I have a router, and I'm running windows vista. I'm pretty sure its not the router because I connected the modem directly to the computer, and it got even worse. I've tried disabling it and restarting my modem and router many times with no luck. My ISP says my connection is strong, and yet the internet is acting so poorly. This just started happening yesterday morning, and I'm completely stumped. Can anyone lend a hand?

Hey guys, I believe I have found that "Local only" internet access fix. I have been searching the forums for months now and nothing seemed to work. Microsoft was no help at all. Even seemed to act like they didnt know it was happening. Anyway I stumbled across it on accident just trying to fix the problem muself. Go to the network and sharing center. Click on view status. Then go to wireless properties. then click on security. Now if it says it is set to WPA-2 personal, change it to WPA personal. Then you will have to re enter your password. Boom fixed. Good luck. It worked for me

First things first. In order to help we need to know what hardware you have could you fill in your system specs (lower left corner). You could also tell us about your networking setup. Is it a homegroup, at school, or work? what modem, router, wifi cards, etc

since then, my sons desktop windows vista will not connect to the internet and has local only connection via a Belkin adapter. The adapter has found the router but will not connect.

Previous supplier, tiscali.

A friend has tried to change the IP address, and still nothing.

We have tried to uninstall Norton security, but the machine seems to want to hold onto it, and will not fully uninstall.

I have another desktop, which is plugged into the router and that works fine. My laptop which is also Windows Vista, has connected perfectly well.

I am seriously pulling my hair out as what to do next.

Can someone please help...bearing in mind i can navigate a computer but not very technical.

why dont you set your updates so they are not automatic , then pick the updates to install , install them one at a time run your pc for a while each time until you find the offending update

Can linux be installed to a HDD on one pc then the drive located to another as mastr?

Ok i'm here hoping to gain some advice and maybe a couple of pointers. I've just installed a 40GB HDD next to my 160GB existing one, thing is I also want to install linux.

Do you think i should put both windows and linux onto the 40gb hdd in order to dedicate the other to file storage? If so should i partition it for each OS (not sure if required as is). Any links to resources related to the matter would be appreciated.

As stated in the title, just another thought as the cd-rom in the original pc isn't working, am considering use as a server or something along those lines using linux.

Thanks for any consideration.

A:Two local HDD one dedicated to OSs' or one each? (in brief)

Yes, you can move Linux installations between computers. If the CPU architecture is slightly different (say, a HT P4 and a measly Duron), then you'd have to replace the kernel. Can't move between 64-bit and 32-bit of course. If the hard drive location changes (from slave to master), then you have to fix the bootloader.

You can install Linux no problem even without a CD-ROM. Just boot using a floppy and load the installation files from a hard drive, over the LAN or even across the internet.

In the same computer..

Since you won't be running the OS in parallel, then speed wise it would make sense to have both OS on the 40GB.

You don't have to partition the second drive with dedicated partitionss for Linux and Windows. You have a choice between several filesystems readable by both OS:
- Both Linux and Windows can handle the FAT32 filesystem just fine. You may run into problems with very long pathnames and data integrity in case of crashes though.
- If you install Captive-NTFS, then Linux can write to NTFS no problem. Depending on your distro, it may take some effort to make this work
- You can install a special driver in Windows that lets it use Ext2 and Ext3 filesystems.

Open up Disk Management, and check what devices and partitions are listed on the top and the bottom pane. Chances are the extra drive letters are the result of an optical drive, a USB device, a card reader, or a virtual device like a virtual optical drive.

Hello I today purchased a laptop and run it on a home And soon a Univesity LAN While I am within range of my networks I wish to be able to securely access the files on my main machine Note PC Has TB of storage laptop has GB Usually I would be fine with the usual FTP or open file sharing through Windows VPN? Setting a local up route but the files I will have available and editable will be my work and most of my documents Obviously I wouldn t want those edited or deleted and FTP is tedious and I would want direct editing I hear it is possible to set up a VPN within a LAN under Setting up a local VPN? Windows Vista but I searched to littl avail So how do I set up Setting up a local VPN? a VPN through a LAN I know a little about routing and networking so just a point in the right direction may be enough The issue here is that I ve never set up a VPN before Or is there an easier way to securely share my files through single network between two computers that I have exclusive access to Thank you in advance nbsp

Hi, when I open My Computer, it has a list a couple things:
Hard Disk Drives
Drive C: (with a hard drive icon)
Devices with Removable Storage
DVD/CD+RW Drive D: (with a CD player icon)
Other
Local Disk L: (icon with a drive that has a red circle over it with a white question mark in the red circle)

I attached an image of My Computer window. I can format it but it is pointless because it has 0 free used space. I thought if I did that maybe I would be able to erase it, but that didn't work either. It doesn't show up in Disk Manager either. I have tried using Partition Magic to delete it, but on reboot it gives me an error 626. I am using Windows XP Home Edition.
Please help, it is driving me crazy!
Thank you

Hi,

I have just upgraded to Windows 7 from XP.

Everything is working OK but My hard drive letter is now H not C

Why has this happened?

Is it an issue?

I'm concerned that it will mess up my iTunes library and generally confuse things.

A:Local drive is H not C?

This can sometimes happen when doing an upgrade type install from inside an existing OS.
The only sure way to prevent this is to install fresh from external media

The best way to deal with a dual boot is to keep all your data on a separate data partition which can then be assigned the same drive letter from within both OS's.

You can then store things such a the iTunes library and your documents on the data partition - a secondary benefit of this policy is that if you lose an OS you are less likely to lose or corrupt the data

If this is a single OS situation then it should not cause any issues for correctly written software and their installers - however a program that assumes a system drive is the C: drive may have issues

I just clicked My Computer and noticed my Local Disk (C:) bar was all red. It should not be because i am only using 25% of the space, when i clicked properties the circle was 75% pink.

And now as iam typing this i checked again and it switched back to normal...... it is not red anymore and says "342GB free of 456GB"...strange.

could this be a virus?
i already did a norton scan and everything fine.

Hope someone can help:)

I just installed a wireless router and it seems to be working fine except I cannot connect to the internet wirelessly through the router.

I can access the internet through an ethernet cable plugged into the router, however, the wireless network shows local only.

I have tried several things to fix the problem through other threads. When I set my router to "no security" I am able to connect to the internet wirelessly. However, when I go back to either secure option I am unable to get a wireless internet connection.

My PS3 is able to connect wirelessly to the internet through the router.

I would be happy to provide any additional information.

Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide with this issue.

Hi
I have posted previously about my problem. I have spent hours and hours.

Problem Vista basic, wireless, connection is Local Only
I have found this site http://social.technet.microsoft.com.../thread/4215a10d-08dd-404a-a43a-635a2f141f0d/ and basically followed everything that i haven't done. From what i gather it is a very regular problem with vista. It seems that the conflict is with the router, previous router worked fine.

There is not yet one solution that has worked for me. This is my last attempt.

If I have no joy i will resort back to XP. THanks

So every time I log into any other machine on our network it stores a local copy of my Roaming user Profile on the machine. This is OK for most users, but i Have to log into multiple machines every day, and every once and a while I'll log into a machine with old settings, and it will override my account. This becomes a pain when i log back into my regular machine, and all of my settings have been changed. What I need is to stop it from saving a cached copy of my profile every time I log into another machine. How would I go about doing that?

A:Local DNS Problem

Your post is unclear

What do you mean by "local DNS Server for LAN user for accessing internet" ? You don't use DNS to access the internet. You use a server with two nics bridged to access the internet via the server.

Your subnet mask limits you to 64 hosts. Any reason why? Is that the same subnet for the server?

What do you mean by "I put a new IP in the server"? You put a new host record into DNS? You changed the ip of the server?

Please clarify.

Okay, I give up! I've seen several similar posts to my issue and I've tried just about everything suggested to no avail.

I have Vista Home Premium (32-bit). I've had the same laptop/modem/DSL for over a year and everything worked fine, then about a week ago I started getting the local-access-only message and can no longer connect to the internet.

What I've tried:
1) Taking my laptop to another wireless location - same error.
2) Trying an XP laptop on my home wireless - works just fine.
3) Rebooting in Safe Mode - still doesn't work.
4) Deleting the Network adapter drivers and letting windows reinstall - still doesn't work.
5) Going back to the latest windows update and uninstalling it - still doesn't work.
6) Disabling TCP/IPv6

Any other suggestions? I'm out of ideas and quickly losing my patience!

Hello,

I did some searching on this topic and saw the answer was to turn off default gateway. I work at home and am connected to my home network and VPN into my work network so outlook will work. If I look at my VPN Status, it says IPv4 connectivity - no internet access- and IPv6 connectivity no network access.

From what I was able to find this is how I want it set up so that my general internet browsing it not going over my VPN. Can you confirm that's what IPv4 no internet access means?

I suspect AVG is blocking access - you need to go into AVG and allow access on your local network

some thing like
Open AVG
Tools menu
Firewall settings option
Profiles
System services
Microsoft file sharing and printing service.
System rule details from Block to Allow
-----------------
You should also be able to set AVG Firewall configuration to allow a range of IP address - choose a range in your network typically starts 192.168.x.x

A:Solved: Keep getting Local only

Are you using wireless or cable - if wireless try removing all the profiles - see below
would you post the following please ipconfig /all here - see below
also the xirrus screen shot - see below
have you tried safe mode with networking - tap F8 as it boots - and choose "safemode with networking" from menu
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{ipconfig /all}
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here
We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results here
-> Start
-> (XP - enter the following in the RUN box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all
-> (Vista or Windows 7 - enter the following in the Search box)
cmd /k ipconfig /all

A black box will appear on the screen -
rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy

then reply here and
control key + V to paste

- delete the preferred networks
start> control panel> network connections> right click on the wireless connection> listed wireless networks tab in the preferred network list click on each one and - remove button

you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to

------------------------------------------------------------------------
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Hi! I use 2 computers to access the Internet through the same wireless DSL connection. On one computer, I only get local access but no connection to the Internet. However, I can access the Internet if I use another network connection that is within this computers range, so I guess there is nothing wrong with my computer. Also, I can access the Internet with my other computer through the same DSL modem that just gives local access with the first computer, so I guess there is nothing wrong with the modem either. I tried the diagnose and repair option of my wireless card, but it didn't find anything. What could the problem be and how can I fix it??

What's the brand and model of your modem? What is the brand and model of your router if you are using one?

Please show for each PC ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi there,

Any reason why in Task manager - alg.exe refered to under user name LOCAL SERVICE is running at 99%, could this explain why the computer is running slow?

This PC has recently just had the mother board and chip replaced from a AMD3600+ to a AMD64 3200 sempron, so i would expect some slow down but not as much as this.

best regards
phil

A:Local access only?

Welcome to TSG:
Need some more info. Please answer as many of the questions as you can:
The “Johnwill” need to know about your environment questionnaire:

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? Have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way? Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

At one of my clients, about three machines out of ten are seeing the error below as of a few weeks ago. To get rid of it they simply reboot and it reconnects but I don't know why all of a sudden this would happen. All the computers are joined to Windows
Server 2012 domain and they all run the same login script which is already set to delete the two mapped drive's before reconnecting them on boot. What else can I check?

Login Script:
net use N: /delete
net use U: /delete

net use N: "\\WWDC\network" /persistent:yes
net use U: "\\WWDC\users" /persistent:yes
