Recommend a DVD Burner?

Q: Recommend a DVD Burner?

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum or not, but I'm looking for a recommendation of a good DVD burner. I have an HP 5100 series laptop with only a DVD/CD-RW Drive. I want to be able to create DVD Slideshows, though. I can buy a portable or external DVD burner, right? I was just looking on ebay, and I'm overwhelmed because I don't know which is best.

So, can anyone give me a good recommendation? TIA!

Preferred Solution: Recommend a DVD Burner?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am thinking about adding a Blu-Ray drive to my desktop. It seems a waste of effort to buy just the player, so I am looking into the burners. As far as I can gather from the usual sources, there isn't a large variety to choose from. It seems that the Pioneer drive (apparently there is also a Plextor which people claim to be the same thing) is rated the best, while the LG is cheaper. To my surprise, Sony does not sell such drive anymore.

Anyone has a positive experience with a Blu-Ray burner? Could you recommend a good drive?

Thanks in advance.

Unifex, depending on what you use the burner for will determine the investment you are going to shell out for.
My guess is that you are wanting to create a hi def library but copying blu ray disks that are copyright is illegal. So we need to very careful here.
For the sake of argument it would be more advantageous to purchase a high capacity hard drive and a blu ray optical drive and the accompanying software for around $300 and make iso's and virtual mount for viewing on your chosen system.

Hello.

I have been searching the Internet for a good external CD/DVD burner. But I am so confused. I don't want to spend more that $80 on it. But I want one that will work with Windows XP, Windows Media Player and has LightScribe.

I had the LiteOn one, but apparently it was defective. And I have been told on here to try a cord powered one instead of a USB powered one.

Thank you.

Hi, I want to instal a new dvd burner drive, but in my pc I have a cd burner drive and a dvdrom.
I want to know how to set them. should I put the dvdrom in the first ide as slave and in the second ide, should I put the dvd burner drive as master and the cd burner drive as slave?.
My question is because in the documentation that comes with my dvd burner, it said to put it as slave in the second ide, but I'm not sure because in that ide I will have also a cdr burner drive.
how should I put them?.
Thank you

A:Dvd burner stops working as a drive and burner.

First, try emptying the CD Burning cache in:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning (you may to unhide folders in Folder options first).

Next check Device Manager and make sure the drives are showing under DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

Next, try the upper/lower filter fix in registry. You can download fix from :

ok, I have a few questions. First I bought a dvd burner, while installing it I switched it to master. And switched my dvd rom drive to slave. What drive do I want to go along with the dvd burner, my cd burner or the other dvd rom drive? And how come I have three bays and I'm only able to hook 2 drives up, is there some kind of splitter, or would I have to disconnect the floppy drive and use that ide connection? I'm using winXP home.

Sorry if this is confusing?

Thanks for any help.

A:DVD burner-DVD ROM-CD Burner-CD ROM and only 3 bays???

okok

firstly... you have the IDE that connects to your floppy, that's primarily for FLOPPY...

the primary IDE can have any OPTICAL (cdrom,DVD-rom, whatever...) or HARDDISK combination connected, also the secondary IDE can have the same combinations...you should have two(2) IDE cables or four(4) IDE connectors.. now assuming you have only one harddrive, you can connect another optical to the IDE cable the harddisk is connected to, so there you have three opticals to fill your bays and one harddrive to store your info:slurp:

(Also, when using a harddisk and optical combination, the harddisk should always be connected to the IDE0 "master" connector and the optical should be on the secondary "slave" connector)
so illustrated, it'll look like...

IDE0-----Harddisk---Optical

IDE1-----Optical----Optical

Now possibility #2...

you should check your mobo for a Serial ATA port.. you can use these to connect drives also, SATA is faster, btw..
good luck, my friend

Hello, I 'm trying to figure out what is the best way for my DVD burner and my cd-rw writer to be hooked up without any or few mistakes. The way I have them now are as follows:

IDE belt 1 = Harddrive - Master (no slave)
IDE Belt 2 = DVD burner - Master and CD-rw writer as the slave

Is this the best setup or what should I do?

A:DVD BURNER AND CD-rw BURNER SETUP

Sure that will work just fine. Some people may recommend that you move the CD-RW to the Primary IDE as a Slave and that will improve CD-RW to DVD-RW copy speeds - personally I would keep it as it is.

P.S: a belt is called a (IDE) cable.

I am planning a new build (already bought mobo, cpu, ram, and dvd drive), and I am looking for a nice PSU. I havent decided on a graphics card yet, but its likely that i will get either an 8800gt or an 9800gtx (they ususally want ~300-450W)

Anyways, most PSU's I have seen have around 8 molex cables. I dont need 8 molex cables, I dont even really need one (maybe certain case fans btw). My Hard Drive will be SATA, my DVD drive is SATA, so I dont want to waste space and drown in cables with extra molex's. I am looking for something at 600W (nice and safe, all hardware should be fine with this), and not to many molex connectors.

Suggestions? (Not buying from Newegg, since I dont live in the US)

As per title, I've been using ASUS motherboards for last 11 years and I must say they are worth every penny. First one was P4P800-Deluxe which lasted from 2001 to 2007 and second one is P5E3 which I'm using since 2007 till now.

I guess its time to jump on bandwagon and upgrade my system. I'm again very much leaning towards getting ASUS again, i.e. P8P67

I was wondering if I should try some other brands like Gigabyte or MSI. I know ASrock is sister company of ASUS so its like getting same motherboard for less money. What will you my fellow PC geeks will advise to go for?

I almost forgot to mention, I'll be getting Core i7 2600k very soon so motherboard has to be 1155 socket.

A:Recommend me new MB

All you can expect to hear is someone's personal experience with a brand, such as you just stated yourself for Asus. "I've owned leventy-leven brand X motherboards and never had a problem".

You can then go immediately to Google and find all kinds of horror stories about that particular brand.

Anecdotes are just that and mean little since the horror stories encompass all brands and you will play hell finding any authoritative evidence--just as it is for hard drives.

I've owned Intel, Dell, Gigabyte, and several Asus motherboards. The only one that ever failed was an Asus.

Signifying nothing. It's just another anecdote.

Look for the features you need and buy from a dealer you trust.

Make some wild-ass guesses and questionable assumptions about supposed build quality and quality control.

Hope it doesn't break.

Hope even harder that you never need to deal with customer support.

I'd rather get one that actually protects, rather than buying one just to say I own one. Then again, I don't think I need a very high end one. I'd rather not buy online, but I will if brick-and-mortar retail stores have terrible products.

Hi, i'm looking to buy a new CPU but not sure which one would be best for my computer I currently have an AMD Anthlon(tm) XP 1800+ 1533 MHz. I use my computer for graphic and web design work mainly, so I use adobe packages quite alot, I also like to create music using programs such as cubase.

My mainboard is a SOLTEK 75FRV and OS is Windows XP service pack 3.

I hope that info helps, i'm pretty clueless on what would be the best CPU for my needs!

Thanks anyone!

A:Can someone recommend a CPU

From the MB and CPU specs, I would assume the PC is at least 5 years old?

It is possible to upgrade the CPU a bit, but finding Athlon XP CPUs is getting fairly difficult and expensive. Also, upgrading any other part in such an old system would be a waste of money since you won't be able to reuse it in a future system later on.

Your money would be better used if you saved a bit for a completely new PC with up to date parts. There are plenty of fairly decent PCs on the market these days for under $500 which would perform many times better.

A:What UPS would you recommend for my PC?

I would look for one that would run your system for about 10 minutes to give you time to close out any files that you have open and gracefully shut down in case of a power outage. Just don't put your laserjet printer on the same line. Your monitor and computer should be all that is necessary.
APC Smart-UPS 1500VA LCD 120V should be more than sufficient. Many are cheaper but you gets what you pay for. Some of the cheaper ones are nothing but a surge supressor.

Could anyone recommend a USB hub?

A:Recommend a USB hub?

well theyre all pretty similar in terms of how they perform........

i can tell you which one NOT to buy, i bought one of these in need of a good few USB connections..

7 Port USB 2.0 480Mps Hi-Speed HUB Laptop Notebook NEW on eBay (end time 27-Nov-09 20:29:35 GMT)

it states ''USB 2.0'' all over it, but it does not come with an additional power adapter...this means whenever you plug in more than 2 devices, the USB block defaults all connections to ''USB 1.0''
so, if your buying a 4 port hub you should be ok, if buying a hub with more connections make sure it comes with an adaptor..

PC Diagnostic software? Something that looks for potential problems and can fix them but still giving the user control over what gets repaired?

I have used Norton WinDoctor for years but recently it repaired a registry entry and caused big time problems. I had to use System Restore to back up to the previous backup. Ever since I have been reluctant to let it clean much up with out eyeballing the change first. I have also used Norton CleanSweep for a long time but it will not always remove software that it says it does.

I recently tried PC BugDoctor. It finds a lot more errors than WinDoctor does but their licensing fee is quite high, so I've never bought it. And it does not say what it's going to repair so I have never had it try.

Anyone have any suggestions?

What AV you recommend me to pair with MalwaresBytes that is noob-friendly?

Bonus: I have read that Bitdefender have an auto-pilot. Is Bitdefender 2017 decent and compatible with Malwarebytes?

Computer: Sony Vaio Windows XP

Hi,
I am a student and I need to have a software that lets me type essays, use MLA format and type out and print all kinds of documents for school. The software also has to have the capability to save my work on a floppy disk(diskette). My teachers recommend Corel WordPerfect 7.0 and Microsoft Word, but I'm not sure about which software would be better for my needs. If anybody has used these softwares, which one do you recommend or is there any other type of software that would work? Lastly, what are simple steps to saving typed documents onto floppy disks?
Thanks

A:Which of these PC's would you recommend?

Both processors are dual core so they are about even, but I do like the E6600 better than the E6400 simply because it's faster and has twice the L2 cache. The geForce 7500LE just plain sucks as a 3D accerator while the X1600 is about three times as powerful but still isn't anything to brag about. I'd buy the E6600 and then plan to purchase a new video card and operating system. How much are you planning on spending on this computer because it's very possible to cobble together for you a computer that would meet or beat a combination of the best parts of the 7635 and the 7755 for usually just a little more money.

Currently have an HP A1730N and want to upgrade my video card to an XFX 7900GS. Current power supply is 300watts and I need bare minimum 350, so I figure a 500watt supply.

I have an onboard PCI-E slot, pci slots, 2 SATA board connectors. I am running 1 SATA HD, a USB DVDRW, and have 3 sticks of 1gb DDR2 RAM. Have about 6 USB devices going. Everything else is onboard, including sound and my current video card which will obviously be disabled. CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 x2 4600+

Need something that will fit fine and give me the right connections. Looking to spend less than $60. Thanks.

A:What PSU would you recommend?

I don't think this is a PSU issue, you don't have many components and the GT 520 is a low power card (Nvidia's website recommends a 300W power supply).

Sounds like you probably downloaded a virus or something... you can try cleaning up your computer or reformatting.

After using bundled nero package with moderate success I uninstalled all of it when my computer became very sluggish. After doing this my computer came back up to par.
All I want is a straight forward music library that I can download from with out all the documentation and that is compatible to the lightning lll.I've heard of musicmatch, jukebox 8.0, etc.I am new to all of this and just want "one program" that I can use without all of the incompatibility issues that arise. I tried some programs while nero was installed and had these problems.I just want a good music archive program that I can use even if I have to pay for. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Thanx

A:Recommend please

Nero isn't an archiving program, it's just a burner application. I have no idea what a lightning III is or what it pertains to in this situation. MusicMatch is used for cateloging and playing your MP3 music library and does a pretty good job of it. There are other applications like WinAmp and many..many others. As far as downloading, are you referring to the file sharing services like Kazaa and the now defunct Napster?

First of all, hi guys.
I am asking a simple question i'm gonna change my CPU (AMD Athlon X2 5000+), because it's almost dead and i need some suggestions. My motherboard is Albatron KM61S-AM2, and i need CPU for AM2 slot. Some friends recommended me "AMD Phenom II X4 940" - is it good ?
Actually i don't have a lot of money so to be in the likes of max 100 $.
I was pretty happy with my CPU(Athlon 5000+) for gaming so i need something in that region. But also i have one more question if i buy "AMD Phenom II X4 940", will i be in need to change Motherboard, RAM, or GPU(Nvidia GeForce 9800GT), in other words is there gonna be a bottleneck effect ?
Thanks in advance.
PS:Sorry if my English is bad, it's not my native one

A:What CPU will u recommend ?

What do you mean your CPU is almost dead? CPU's don't fail fairly often and there's usually no "almost dead" state for them.

Albatron tech support is pathetic at best, but you need to check with them which processors are supported and i you need a BIOS update to run those processors. Normally this is posted clearly on the manufacturer's website but these guys don't seem to work in the same manner.

Hey guys, i got a tall order for you guys.

i was wondering if it would be advisable to have 2 AV's, 2 Anti Spyware/Malware, and 2 Fire walls? Recently i had a glitch in the system, some Backdoor virus is trying to get in.
Bitdefender is blocking it left and right so im safe. Am i over reacting? or should i amp up my security? So i considered running 2 of each.

heres what i considered

Main AV: Bitdefender 2nd AV: Either MSE, Avast or Avira

Main Anti spyware/malware: MalwareBytes 2nd Anti: Superantispyware or any other

Main Firewall: windows7 firewall control 2nd wall: pctools firewall or anyother

what do you guys think? i mostly use my puter for school, games, and im constantly downloading new software.

Check out my specs and let me know what you think.

Thanks in advanced.

A:Do You Recommend it?

While running 2 AV's is possible, it's definitely not advisable. There's nothing at all wrong with running a virus scan with more than one anti-virus program. Because it's just a scan - it starts, it scans, and then it's done. Real time monitoring, which is installed with most anti-virus programs is constantly running and scanning files downloaded to your machine. Running two or more real time anti-virus monitors at the same time is very likely to cause a conflict which could result in any number of error messages or failures. The most advisable thing to do would to be to find a good, reliable anti-virus program that you trust, and make sure it's always updated with the latest definitions.

Same for anti-spyware programs, as long as there isn't two real time monitoring engines trying to do the same thing at once, you should be fine.

The same goes for firewalls, however, I just wouldn't recommend running two software based firewalls at the same time because, as with AV programs, they monitor in real time, and two programs trying to do the same thing at once can and usually will cause problems. However, if you have a hardware based firewall, such as one built into a router, there would be no problem running a software and a hardware based firewall.

As for your case, if you believe BitDefender is doing it's job, I would leave it as your anti-virus, and use MalwareBytes and run a periodic scan to check for spyware, and either use the default Windows Firewall, or another 3rd party firewall and all should be fine. But remember, the best security is purely common sense while browsing

Sorry for the long winded reply, too much time on my hands lol. Hope I helped

Well the time has come for an entire new look and build for my computer.

I have a 500$ budget but will spend 600.
I have my PSU, RAM, HD, CD/DVD drive already.

I'm looking in to get a
Antec 900 case. (100-125$)
Duo E4400 OC running @ 3.0Ghz with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. (200$ Mobo/CPU Combo)
Gigabyte GA-P35-S3L motherboard. (200$ Mobo/CPU Combo)
And maybe a x1950 or 7900. Probably the x1950 though. (200$)
So thats a sum total of 500$ give or take a few dollars.

Anyone have any suggestions/opinions/thoughts/questions/answers/advice? What if anything to upgrade/downgrade? But you cant hit over that 600$ or else!

This is a decent board and performs almost good as my 590sli (which doesn't have video). It has onboard video, 4 ram slots, 2 ide + floppy, 4 sata, etc. I've got that in a second pc and works great.

I'm not sure which other boards you can look at, since to me it doesn't matter if it has onboard or not, I usually start with the chipset and go from there.

Hi all,

I am looking to install a new router.
I have around 500 / 1000 devices connected at once to this Router. I currently use a DrayTek though I feel it is struggling.

Has anyone got any suggestions?

A:Recommend a Router?

My guess would be that the bottleneck is your line and not the router. But this is a good price/performer:

Hi,

I have a Gateway NV54 laptop that I have been happy to just do its thing. But, I've been watching it a while now....and its time to decrappify it.

Can anyone recommend a good decrappifier program? I did a quick Google but there are many to choose from - I'd like a trusted one without the snakeoil if possible.

What are your recommendations? Laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium x86.

Thanks,
Golden

Planning on making a less powerful computer for a friend of mines mom. The mobod is the ASUS M2N-E Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX AMD along with the x2 4600 brisbane. What memory would you suggest to work the best with NO overclocking at all. Would the 800 be best?

A:What memory do you recommend?

That board can take DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-4200, DDR2-8500 with a maximum of 2 GB.

The only decisions to make are ECC vs non-ECC You don't need ECC.
Whatever you get, make sure all modules are alike, and do not use any memory that as Value in the description, as it is slower.
The entire memory package will run at the rate of the slowest module.
Based on your description, I would get the DDR2 PC6400 in two 1 GB modules.. but you would be fine with the any, as long as they are identical.

Hi,

My Uncle recently purchased a new iPad (3rd one). He was asking me how he can get WiFi at his home and I told him that all he needs is a wireless router.

In my home, I personally use a Linksys WRT54GH for wireless connectivity.

Anybody have experience on what's a nice router I can recommend for him? I'll be personally setting that up as well.

Thanks to anyone who can help

A:Can you recommend me a router?

It's all subjective of course, but this link may help you decide: Routers

If you're happy with your router, why don't you buy the same for your uncle?

Hey you guys im just wondering if there is any application out there that will fasten up my pc!

Ok my pc is about 5 years old, maybe its time to throw in the towel and start thinking of buying a new one!

Dell dimension Dim4600
Cpu 3.0 Ghz
Ram512

The main problem is when i power up my pc is takes about 10 minutes to get into action!

Opening iTunes takes about 2 to 3 minutes. Getting little bit annoying.

Maybe running MS office, itunes and firefox is just too much for this old pc of mine!

Any suggestions.

Thanks Leon

My OS is Win 7x64 and currently have the latest adobe reader for pdf. Keep all programs current through secunia psi. However read some tutorials with regards to foxitreader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/) and some think it is more secure. Does anyone have this and if so what are your observations? Have received guidance and assistance from BC previously and certainly come to respect recommendations. Thanks

A:Which reader do you recommend

I've used both and like both. Foxit uses less memory and is faster, so I like it better from that standpoint.

As for security, I haven't read anything derogatory about either one.

I am in the market for a new laptop. It will be used largely for internet, itunes, remote desktop into work. These two laptops are exactly the same price. Which would you recommend?

HP G62-371dx--AMD turion II 2.4 gHz 3GB ram (DD3), 500GB harddrive

HP G63-367dx-- AMD Turion II 2.5gHz 4GB ram (DD3) 320 GB hard drive

Batteries, graphics card, layout, etc are all the same. Since we have only used 30GB of our current laptop in four years, I am leaning towards the higher RAM but wanted to get another opinion. Thanks in advance!

A:which laptop would you recommend between these two?

If you are going to run a 32 bit version of windows, then
the extra hard drive space would probably be more useful.
For a 64 bit version,it would be able to make use of the extra memory.
Overall though, there isn't going to be much difference in performance.
64 bit would get a bit better performance.

Within the next few weeks, I will likely be rebuilding my grandparents computer (since their P4 with 512mb RAM is no longer up to the job)

Anyways, I am aiming for a E5200 or E5300 Processor, with integrated graphics. This computer has no need for power, which is why I am opting for integrated graphics and a mid-range cpu

Any good recommendations?

A:Recommend a motherboard

I think G45 boards with Intel X4500HD graphics that fit DDR2 800 memory, take at least 4GB RAM but can start with less depending on the OS. That with E5200 or E5300 would give you a nice range of upgradability in the future if / when that becomes necessary. X4500HD onboard graphics even plays Blu-ray movies on Vista (but not XP though) in case their needs change a lil bit in 2-3 years. If something else we don't know of at this point came up down the line, then you could add a dedicated video card.

For instance, this also takes a wide range of processor FBSs, You start with E5200 (800MHz)which is at the buttom of it, but it can be upgraded to Quad Core (1333MHz) down the line when Quad Cores are like 80 dollars, in addition to memory being able to go up to 16GB (which you will never need hopefully!) It also has 6 USB on the back. And has a good customer satisfaction rating.

Personally, I feel like I know exactly what you are talkin about. Folks who have basic computing needs. If you don't need G45, you could go with G31 etc. But if things like Bluray became the 'standard' in a few years, then maybe, boooh! LOL! I will have to add a video card then (still not a big deal though). In addition to that G31 may limit the upgradability of RAM depending on what you choose. I'd probably go with A GOOD mobo with expandability and start with the low end components that the mobo takes, so that it can be used for several years. If your grandparents ONLY use the computer for Office and Internet Explorer, a webcam/Skype, and transfering pitures/ maybe burning them to CDs, then G31 should be good enough, for instance, this (though FBS 800MHz is not listed, the manufactuere's page says the mobo supports it.). Anyway, if you go with a G31, I recommend that you make sure the board has a PCIe x16 slot in case a video card has to be added in the near future...

I have a D-Link EBR-2310 that did not play well with Vista and does not play well with Win7 either. Constant loss of browser connection but other connections remain working and just plain unreliable in all aspects. I need a wired router and we only have at most 4 PC's connected at a time and this is basically for sharing the web connection I have so no file sharing. I have paid under $50 for the last 2 I have had and they do not cut it and both have been D-link so I want to get away from D-link and would be willing to pay up to $100 for something that actually works.

I have finally ran down my problem and the router is the issue!

Edit: Have tried Linksys a few years back with Win XP and had same issue so I want to get away from both Linksys and D-Link.

i am thinking of building a system... inexpensive but a quality part will need at least support for 4gb of RAM and a PCIe (16X) i know what i will be putting on the rest of the board (generally) Im thinking of getting an AMD board as it seems the best budget and performance (bang for buck) wise, just keep in mind i am in Australia and even though the aussie dollar has reached 95US cents its still a bit, and the postage too... so really im looking at brands on newegg... could anyone suggest a decent board? i am thinking of only putting in 2GB RAM but preferably 4 or more for re-sell (might be selling it soon after its built if it doesn't work out)

A:Recommend a Motherboard

two boards i would recommed are:

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R and
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L

The P35 chipset will allow you to use the latest DDR3 memory, these two boars are very good in my opinion and provide a good ability to overclock if you wanted to.

Can someone recommend a portable mp3 player that works well with Windows XP? I'd prefer something that can simply drag and drop from the Explorer rather than having to load some arcane software (especially *not* something horrible like MusicMatch Jukebox). Thanks

A:Recommend an mp3 player?

I'd say the Creative Nomad II 6GB... it is *GASP* 6GB, and works as a USB Hard drive as well... drag n' drop, holds a bleepin lot of music... a bit expensive though. I'm not sure if the regular Nomad has drag n' drop, but it is cheaper. Both are XP compatible.

Currently I have the Fios router. I wanted to buy a strong router something that can extend the signal from the bottom of my room to the other side of second floor into my dads room because he doesn't get wifi there. The current router supposedly goes 30 feet so it is good upstairs but when i bring it downstairs no signal in my dads room so I want to get something that can do more that 30 feet and stronger signal.

Hey all,

Finally got around to dropping some $$ on my computer for upgrades. I am now able to run pretty much every game I believe. Can you recommend me some games?

I like FPS games. But note I already have all the COD's, and Crysis 2 for Xbox. So knock those off the list.

If someone never did a Hijack this log, or a Boot in Safe Mode, would you recommend that they do one just encase the need arises so they don't feel over whelmed if they have a real problem? Sorry to post such a trivial question, but this my learning tool.
