Power supply and mother board compatibility

Q: Power supply and mother board compatibility

was wondering if anyone can answer this for me...

i want a graphics card along the lines of ATI X1900. it needs a 400W+ PSU, my system has a 250W PSU.

if i install a 400W PSU will it effect the other components in any way, eg... blow the motherboard? fry the HDD?

searched already for an answer but could find a specify yes or no... cheers guys

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Power supply and mother board compatibility

Most likely no. There are some older Dell systems that had a proprietary power supply where the pins were switched around so that only a Dell PSU could be used.

As far as pure wattage goes, have no fear. 1000w power supplies are just as safe if not safer than that 200w in the current system.

Really, if your planning on investing in such a nice graphics card, you might as well put just a little more into the PSU as well, maybe a 450w or 500w.

Is it possible to take the power supply that has both ide and Sata cable and hook it up to a mother board that has only ide? And be able to use the sata out of the power supply to hook up a new hard drive?

A:power supply with sata to ide only mother board?

As long as the power supply has all the plugs needed for the system and hard drive its going into then yes. There's also adapters and splitters you can buy as well like this: (the reverse is also available)

I hope someone more experienced can help me with this- I have ordered an Intel Celeron D GHz to build a economical average spare system The new quot D quot is based on the latest Prescott architecture but does not include hyperthreading and its L cache is smaller They apparently overclock impressively well however and should be great for D Celeron Intel Mother Compatibility? A:Intel Celeron D Mother Board Compatibility?

There is a good chance your CeleronD is not compatible with that board. I ran into this problem when we switched over to the CeleronD at work, we had to make sure we were getting the newer revision of the board (Albatron PM266 Pro), as the older one looked identical, but was not compatible (and no BIOS update would fix that).

It's true that they overclock well, I got my 2.66GHz one up to 3.4GHz without even needing to increase the CPU voltage.

Pin compatible? The sockets look identical, if that's what you mean. But boards may require hardware changes (e.g. improved power delivery) to support a Prescott. You aren't likely to damage a board by plugging one in, it just won't boot.

No, the motherboard supplies the voltage to it. The CPU tells the motherboard the voltage it wants, but some boards (including mine) allow you to increase the voltage.

So you are trying with a total of 2 sticks? You are not running with your old sticks in there as well are you?

Try the ram in different slots and see if you can boot up. Also try with just one stick at a time. You can also try resetting your CMOS, sometimes that will help you to boot up.

If you put your old ram in there, can you boot up?

Let us know how it goes.

A:Power Supply Compatibility...

The maker of the PSU as well as how many watts are the two biggest factors when buying a PSU. If you read through a lot of the post in this forum, you'll find that many of the problems are PSU related, and that these problems are extremely hard to diagnose.

Investing in a decent PSU will save you major headaches!!! Here is a good thread for buying PSUs:
Relevancy 76.97%

Possibly a noob question, but please help if you know about this.

When buying a PSU I know I need the right Wattage for compatibility with my components. But is it important (or not) to also know the Amps and Volts and/or size the cables have that will go into the MOBO? Does this have anything to do with ATX/EPS? If so, what is ATX/EPS? I am cluless, please help me understand WHAT is important to know and what isn't. Thank you

A:Power Supply - Compatibility

Voltages are standard. Amps matter but mostly on the +12 volt rail(s), that's where most components draw from. Any quality power supply will have the majority of its power on the +12volt rails.

EPS is an extension of ATX adding extra power, stability, and connectors for higher end systems, they can be used in place of regular ATX power supplies. I think most good ones these days are EPS.

My motherboard has recently blown and I've had to replace it. My only issue is that it has a different internal power source to my former motherboard and I'm not sure if I can utilise my old power supply with it. I've included pictures of the motherboard connection (the blue one) and the power supply connection. Power supply connection is for a larger connection but it works perfectly with the motherboard, except it is inserted into 4 slots rather than 8.

Is this safe? It seems to be working fine.

Hi I own a Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80Ghz running on 2 core processers it is a HP PC m7360n. And Running on Upgrade Version of Windows Vista Home Premium. Or can my HD 3870 can or can't? run 300Max which I know is unsafe. :/ I don't want to take any chances. Or not I just goto a local computer store and pay for them to install it.

A:Installing 700w Power Supply to Intel 4 Board

I would go ahead and install the new power supply. You should have no issues as long as the new power supply has all the proper connectors your equipment needs such as a PCI-E connector (for the graphics card) and a 700W should. If you are worried about a 700W being too powerful for your old setup, don't be. Your PC will draw only what it needs from the power supply even if you install a 1200W PSU.

Each type of PSU connector can only be connected to its own type and they are keyed so it is hard to install them backwards. After installing all the new power connections, double check the data cables. Sometimes they can get loose by accident when you are installing the other cables.

If you haven't bought it yet, make sure you get a good quality PSU. This is one piece of equipment you don't want to go too cheap.

I am wanting to use one of the power supplies in a standard case with a standard desktop board with a twenty-pin power connector. The power supply has a twenty-four pin connector.

Here's the question: Can I simply connect the twenty-four pin connector to the twenty-pin board (letting the extra four pins hang off to the side, unconnected) and have it work that way?

IMO, 40GB is way too small for the system drive. You'd be constantly babysitting it, moving files, and everything you do would have to be retargeted before starting a project. Windows 7 64 bit would use half of that space just for itself.

A:Question about power supply compatibility with graphics card

It may be the way the specs are written on your PS... but
The graphics card does care what the output is... more than the motherboard or other component does...
A cheap power supply from 2005 or before had a better chance of not supplying the minimum power.... Now you can see all these specs for a quality power supply when you look at the descriptive information on the power supply section of Newegg, Directron, ZipZoomFly,, and many others... but only in the past year or two has it all been published.

EPS) which are being replaced shortly It fit perfectly into place as well Which I can t exactly say for the other cable The ATX cable didn t work but it s possible that I didn t place the x pins in their correct positions as I ve heard mention that it s still possible to power the motherboard with ATX when it requires EATX I m troubleshooting several other things on my new build so I can t exactly limit my issue to my power supply But I guess what I m asking is whether or not my PSU is compatible with my motherboard If it is then I can eliminate it from my list of suspects nbsp

I just swapped out a e5-2603 CPU and installed a e5-1620 CPU in a Precision T5600.  The PC will not boot, and prior to a forced entering to bios setup, it gives a warning/error
"Your dell current power supply does not support the recent configuration changes made .."
My PSU is a 635W - this should be sufficient, yes??
So is the 1620 not compatible with this model?

I was wondering if anyone has any tips on where to get parts to fix/replace a mother board for not too much money? I was informed yesterday that my mother board was shot on my year old gateway laptop. My husband is pretty good with computers and has built our desktops that we've had but he's currently deployed so I have to wait until he returns to fix or attempt to fix my laptop. I live in CT but am more than willing to order parts online. Thank you.

Every thing went good but I hooked the on off switch wires incorrectly. I think I got it on two + posts. Needless to say I did let some smoke out of the switch box. I have since corrected this but now the computer will not boot up. Did I fry the new motherboard? Any help I can get would greatly be appriciated.

A:Mother board and Ram

DDR3 comes with high clocks but also with price and high latency. So, high quality DDR2 would(COULD in some occasions) still outdo DDR3. To a point, latencies can determine the performance more than clocks.

A:Which Mother Board is better?

No contest the second one. The first is an ancient (in computer terms) Pentium 4/DDR/AGP based board, whereas the first is a much more recent AMD AM3/DDR3/PCI-E board that the Compaq bios allowing can up to probably the Phenom II x4 965, which will eat that old P4 for breakfast (would eat for lunch and dinner too).

One problem that has me perplexed . When a customers motherboard goes down , it means reformatting and re-installing XP. Of course all my customer info is gone. If you try to boot up With the new motherboard XP will not load. It launches a critical error and says the boot sector has a virus. I know that XP has this built in to prevent it from being installed on several different computers . This anti-piracy is based upon motherboards bios.

I will not build a computer with pirated software but when the legal owner of the PC and the software needs his computer fixed he should not have to lose all his info. This is when I miss 98 , ME. Under those most computers it was replace motherboard and after several reboots you were all ready to go with all your data intact.

has anybody come up with a work around for this ?

A:When Mother board goes w/XP

What kind of computer are we talking about? According to MS, if you get an OEM motherboard from the manufacturer, with SLP (System-Locked Preinstall) in the BIOS, that's all you need. They don't mention any re-install. Maybe you can sort it out from This Page Is it possible to do a repair install and save the data?

Hi Buzz,
It sounds like you need to remap your keyboard. Go the following Microsoft webpage:

and download the Server 2003 tools software for free (good for XP too). Run the "remapkey.exe" tool to reprogram your keyboard--provided you're running Windows XP, of course.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

Also during this time, the CPU fan was screaming. What's going on here? Did I miss a step?

You can download sisoftsandra from It will identify some motherboards or else the hard way. Look at it and find the manufacturers make and model or the fcc number. The fcc number is generally located right around the dimm slots.

or you can try ctbios, it will read the bios rom's and report what is there.

I am wanting to get a new mother board, to use with the AMD XP 1700 or greater processor. I am wanting to sue RDRam. However all I see is DDRAM boards. Is DD and RD Ram the same thing??? If a mother board supports DDRam will it also support RDRam???
Is there any reomendation for a mother board that will use RDRam and the AMD chip???

A:Mother Board

Currently, there are no motherboards or chipsets that support RDRAM with AMD processors. It could be a possiblity in the future.

RDRAM and DDR RAM are not at all the same thing. They are two different types of memory. None of the memory types are interchangeable. A particular memory slot can only accept one type of memory. Some motherboards support two different types of memory, but they have separate slots for each type, and you can only use memory sticks of one type. You cannot use both types at one time.

Was your old CPU a Celeron as well? Same speed?

You may want use the Clear CMOS jumper to clear the BIOS settings or you can pull out the CMOS battery for a few minutes.

Try reseating the RAM and video card as well. Or try a known good piece of RAM and a good video card. You can disconnect all the drives and remove any unneccessary PCI cards like a modem.

I was hoping someone could help me find something that fits? i dont know what information to provide but i just want to get the best that i can get with what i have. I just want to upgrade the computer without having to leave empty holes where the panels were.

Last night I tried Board Mother Replacement to replace the mother board on my Dell Inspiron e laptop I bought the replacement part Mother Board Replacement from an Ebay store and it is still under warranty days After taking apart my entire laptop and putting the whole thing back together--a job that took my friend and I three hours--we plugged it in for the moment of truth The battery light came on so far so Mother Board Replacement good Then we hit the power button and nothing happened Well almost nothing The machine appeared to turn on All three lights on the the bottom of the LCD went on but that s it The fan didn t start the monitor didn t start The hard drive light was on but didn t appear to be reading at all i e no blinking or noise I m quite perplexed Everything appeared to go back together perfectly with the possible exception of the diskette drive cable clip which we weren t exactly sure whether to put back in over under or through the disk drive data cable We eventually put it through For instructions and pictures of the process check out link http support dell com support edocs systems pblan removing htm Everything else seemed to go back together seemlessly We were very careful with screws and put all the right sizes back into their correct places What could be causing this Have I received a defective part Are there any other explanations I suppose a possible explanation is that the processor and or video board are not quite connected correctly but they seemed to fit perfectly and snap down firmly when we put it back together Please help nbsp

I had a laptop given too me and the power jack is gone ... So upon disassembling the Laptop i find that the solder spots are gone and the mobo is chewed up. Can this be fixed or can i solder wires to other spots to make the laptop charge and or operate? Asus G53SW laptop mobo rev 2.0

A:Mother board and Soldering

The power socket will have to held in place even without the pins being soldered to the mobo. Then you can use 2 wires to connect the pins to the correct tracks on the mobo. Any other damaged tracks will have to be fixed too.

Can you post a picture of the 'chewed up' part of the mobo ?

I wanted to update my mother board drivers. There seems to be a few that need updating. My question is, that is it kinda tricky to do these updates? Can you mess things up if you don't do it correctly? My mother board is a Gigabyte GA-81945P-G. Is it REALLY necessary to update these drivers, even if my system is running good? Thanks for any ideas on this.

A:Mother board drivers

I would only use the CD that came with the motherboard to install the drivers. If everything is running ok I would not upgrade the drivers unnecessarily. This used to be a school of thought, but isn't the case anymore. If it works don't fix it. I never choose to randomly update my graphics or auto drivers any more. As long as they are working I leave them alone. Updating the drivers can sometimes result in negative results and cause you to roll back the driver to the previous one.

I formated the C drive and then installed Windows 98SE from a CD purchased from Microsoft vendor. When the installed was completed the sound was not there and the video was set at 16 colors and the 400 by 600 and could not be changed.
The board is an Intel D815EEA, which Intel does not support anymore. Everything else seems to be good. I downloaded updates for the board and when I went to install the board said they were all ready installed.
The system is Windows 98SE with 256RAM and a 800meg CPU
Any guideance would be a great help. I would like to get back up to where I was.

Asus Motherboard for Intel P4 Processors Model P4PE-X

thats the mother board im going to buy

and this is the ram im gonna buy

is it ok that i only buy one stick? to me i would think it should be fine, but i read some review from a motherboard that said it is a good motherboard if i just wanted to use 1 stick of ram, didnt really know what that meant, i know back in the day some MB's needed to have atleast 2 sticks of ram, not sure if this is the case now... you guys have all been soo helpful.... just wanted to say thanks and that i appreciate all the feedback... :grinthumb

A:question about mother board/ram

Nah, you can use 1 stick or the maxium sticks of memory it holds without the performance being affected by how many sticks your using (except if you were to use 2 sticks in Dual Channel mode).
