Preferred Solution: Straight Vertical Line on my Laptop Screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Vertical white line on the laptop screen

Hey Patrizia,Welcome to the HP Forums! The first steps that you should attempt is to make sure that the vertical white lines do not appear in the BIOS. To do this I have included the steps below.1. Turn off your computer2. Make sure you have connected the power cable3. Turn on your notebook, as it is starting press the  F10 button repeatedlyOnce you are in the BIOS, if the lines are still present, it is likely a hardware failure. The next two steps may resolve the issue. The first one is to do a hard reset. I have included the document 'Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset'. The next and final step is to perform a BIOS update. I have included the information here for you 'Updating the BIOS'.Let me know if the issue does not appear in the BIOS.Hope this helps!

I have a 2 year old Gateway laptop which, I understand, was actually made by Acer under license.

All of a sudden a vertical line appears midway in the screen display. Sometimes it is a red line, sometimes a white line.

Does anyone have any idea why this occurs? Is this a sign of the "kiss of death" for my laptop display, to follow? Does this mean the "end is near" for the screen?

After sever minutes, i moved the lid up and down to adjust the screen angle, these is a pink line appear (small line running the full height of screen). After that I knock the screen or a border of the screen, that line dissappear, then it coming up again when i touch the lid. It keeps happening like that over and over. Any body know how to fix it? A:a vertical line on screen

The screen's cable is most propably damaged. Just to confirm that the fault is in the monitor, post a screenshot from a time where the line appears... Replacing the cable will not be the simplest job, I assume, but will be quite an easy fix...

If there is a warranty or Guarantee in place for the item then dont try to fix it, you can void any warranty, take it back again and again until you get a working system or until you get your money back.

A:VERTICAL LINE ON HP PAVILION DV6 LAPTOP

SOM29 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about a vertical blue line on your display and wanted to help. It's highly unlikely that this is a driver issue, and much more likely that this is either a failing display, or a failing video chipset, or both -- and both of these last two are very expensive to fix, likely more than simply replacing the laptop. A way to see if it IS the video driver is to boot into safe mode -- in which case, the special video drivers would then NOT be working:  http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/69585-safe-mode.htmlGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

A:Black screen/vertical line freeze!

Well, yes, heat kills hardware. However, if that projector had been so hot, your laptop would have at least restarted, if not turned off, in order to save itself from potential damage from the heat.
There are some programs for monitoring your laptop temperatures, you can use them to check if the problem occurs because of overheating (SpeedFan and Core Temp).

If the problem has something to do with your drivers and the restore point is before you have updated for example your Display Driver, then you could first try running in safe mode and see if the problem still occurs. If no, restore your system, it won't delete any files, it will only return your registry and drivers to earlier state.

That you are out of warranty shouldn't stop you from taking your laptop for diagnostics. You will have to have money of course, but at least they will fix the problem ; )

A:Thin vertical line on my newly bought laptop

It could possibly be due to a faulty data cable and at worst the screen itself. Only solution would be to have it serviced by a Lenovo technician as it is most likely hardware related.

I had an old laptop in '12 that I used for mainly internet browsing, but it ended up having a glitch I coulf never fix, and I have fished out that laptop today.

Whenever the computer starts up, it will work for a few brief seconds before the computer seems to pick up each individual color on the screen and make them into vertical lines. And, more recently, the computer will shut down automatically once they have been displayed for a few moments. My knowledge of how to fix this is limited to taking out the battery repeatedly.

I would add more to System Specs but I'm genuinely clueless, thanks in advance!

My Yoga had a black line appearing on the screen and it was replaced by Lenovo. Now the same problem has appeared again. The line is thick and black appearing 3/4 into the width of the screen. Occassionally it is strippy white. On some occassions a little tap can make it go away (but not much anymore) and rarely after the laptop has been on for some time the line will dissapear. Any help would be appreciated. Is this likely the screen, the power unit or what?

A:INSPIRON 3537 VERTICAL WHITE LINE IN MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN

The only way to permanently solve the problem is to replace the LCD -- if the system is under warranty, contact Dell and they'll do that for you. If it's not, the screen you depends upon whether it's a standard LCD (about $50-100) or a touchscreen (requires the complete assembly;  about $200).

Hey all. I have a 5 yr. old HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 CTO Laptop. I have had a 1/4 " white vertical line on the right side on my display for awhile now. It is there all the time, even in safe mode, even when I run computer error scan.( Black Screen with white line still) The pointer will disappear under the white line when trying to scroll making this difficult. I have used HDMI cable to my TV and the display on it shows no white line. I then assume that it is either the screen or the display cable. I would have to open it up either way, but was wondering if there is a way to figure out which is the culprit ? Or just go for a new screen, just do not want to open it and replace screen to find out cable is bad. Any ideas ? Thanks

A:Vertical white line right side of Hp dv6t 3200 laptop display

I believe the HP Pavilion dv6t 3200 has integrated graphics, meaning the graphics are soldered to the motherboard.
It is possible that it is the screen, but personally i think it could be the graphics chip. You mentioned that when you connect to an external display the "white line" is no longer visible.

You refer to the cable possibly being the problem are you referring to the HDMI cable or the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard?

If you are talking about the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard, the cable is soldered to the screen therefore if it is the cable a new screen will be needed. Can you take a picture of the line you are seeing please as this will help me diagnose the problem.

A:how to fix my laptop screen that has vertical lines through

First of all try an external monitor on it to make sure it really is a screen fault. If that does it too then let us know.If it is the screen itself then you either repair or replace it. Sometimes screen problems can be due to the cable connecting between the computer and screen (they give trouble where it hinges back and forth). In these cases you can often see a tell tale change by watching the screen then closing it slowly until it is nearly down. The connectors can also work loose at either end.EDIT: I've just realised that you probably mean "adjust" the screen. If so what particular adjustment do you make that temporarily fixes it?Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

While cleaning keyboard, laptop screen went from normal horizontal screen to vertical screen. In effect, the screen is sideways. I'm assuming some command was inadvertently activated by hitting keyboard keys. Is there a set of function keys commands or other steps to get screen to go back to normal?

Hello I am new here and hoping that somebody might help me I have a Toshiba Satellite L laptop I have read the topics about vertical lines on laptop screens here but my case is different I suddenly got these vertical lines all over my screen about pixel thick and to pixels apart and that when it appears the system crashes and freezed I tried to reboot but when the desktop icons start to appear then the red vertical lines also appear and that the system freezes again When in safe mode it works fine So i tried to re-install the windows bit Case Lines Laptop Vertical - on Screen Different system from my package After installation it works fine But when I restarted my laptop again it showed red vertical lines and system crashed Everytime this happens I have to re-install my windows again and again just to use my laptop For now I don t shutdown my laptop because i know that when I will start it up i will have the same problem again and will have to re-install I don t think that this relates to loosed connections or overheating because I never shutdown my laptop for a week now I also tried to open my laptop to inspect the graphic card ATI Radeon but I cannot find it perhaps it is integrated to the motherboard I noticed that something triggers this vertical lines to appear like running MS DOS programs hibernating idling and dimming to save power restarting and when administrator permission pop-up appears Now I am avoiding these actions to prevent system freeze and having those vertical lines I am really hoping that somebody can help me here Thanks a lot nbsp

A few months ago a thin green vertical line started showing up in my screen from top to bottom whenever I would move the screen a certain way When I d stop moving the screen the line would go away Eventually this turned into lines with about a millimeter in between lines red down screen laptop and my Green vertical Then red line started popping up Now I m at from right to left green lines a red line and another green line all really close to each other about of the way away from the right side of the screen This would be ok if they only showed up when I moved the screen and then went away But now it takes a lot of gentle moving and nudging in order to go away Green and red vertical lines down my laptop screen And sometimes the laptop is just sitting by itself and it pops up out of nowhere It s being a real pain to take out now getting more and more stubborn each day Soon I m sure it s just going to stay there and it will be impossible to get rid of I called into HP and they told me to send the laptop in I would but I just started my second semester at college and I really do need my laptop So I said I d send it in in the summer and they said fine The problem is the more I wait the worse it becomes So anybody have any idea of how I can get rid of it By the way the lines show up even when I m just booting up my PC They don t show up in an external monitor So I m pretty positive that there s something loose inside especially since moving it around temporarily fixes it So any help is appreciated I m willing to open my computer if somebody can tell me how what to do and what to look out for Thanks Forgot to mention it s an HP Pavilion dv and I m using Vista Home Premium -bit Thanks again nbsp

A:Green and red vertical lines down my laptop screen

Sounds like your screen is going :S
Best idea is to go to a local computer repair shop and see if they might be able to fix it. Although you could take the laptop casing apart and check all the connectors are properly plugged in... Also, if the laptop has been dropping or knock could have cause some damage to the screen or graphics card (rare, but does happen )

My screen is acting up with vertical flickering pixels. It seems to affect certain shades of colors. When I change the refresh rate of the screen to 40 Hertz the screen has a different pattern of flickering. I am not sure why this is happening all of a sudden or what to fix/replace. I have already taken it to a computer shop but they were no help at all.  How can I fix this?

A:Alienware Laptop has vertical flickering pixels across the screen

Hi PEEWEEDAPLUMBER,
What is the exact system model? Is the distorted screen persistent or random. Does the system overheat? When do you encounter the screen distortion?
Connect an external monitor and check if it works fine.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info - http://dell.to/1SkXNrG
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS and check if the distortion is seen there as well.
If the system is under warranty, write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details. If there is no warranty, then we can help with a paid service call if required.
Keep us updated.

Hi Had IBM Thinkpad E fixed under warranty for faulty screen which had ceased to work - problem turned out to be faulty motherboard and motherboard was replaced Since getting the laptop back there is a thin about mm vertical grey band down the entire screen which obliterates whatever is behind it This line is about a cm in from the left hand side the band comes on from start up ie through the black POST screen and if operating in DOS - the same The correct drivers and refresh on band laptop grey Thin screen vertical rates etc were already loaded OS is Win SE Wondering if it could be caused by something simple like a loose cable The reason I m asking is that I m in Sydney amp have to send the laptop back to Melbourne Thin grey vertical band on laptop screen to be fixed if it is something that has happened in transit there s no point sending it back to have the same thing Thin grey vertical band on laptop screen happen Thin grey vertical band on laptop screen again Any ideas much appreciated Thanks nbsp

A:Thin grey vertical band on laptop screen

That could be a physical flaw in the screen, but hopefully it's just a loosened connection in the wiring involved.

It probably did happen in transit, since the repair techs would have noticed and called you if they saw it.

You could have a local tech try to check the wiring first, but you'll probably have to send it to Melbourne again. If so, use a bigger box and ship it wrapped in something big and soft like a down-filled winter coat or quilt. You might also want to insure the parcel for the round trip if your postal system or courier company offers the option.

I put in a new hard drive in my laptop and now every time it starts up the whole top right quarter of my screen has different colored vertical lines. I put the old hard drive back and still have the same problem. I checked the cable connection to the motherboard and it is fine. Is it possible that I somehow damaged the flex cable that goes to the LCD or could it be something else?

Is there a generic flex cable to the display that I could buy somewhere?

A:Vertical Lines On Laptop Screen: Is Cable Damaged

Hi sparkplug

It could be a loose connection on either end of the cable or a connection to the lcd screen itself being loose. Does your laptop have a connection for an external monitor? If so hook one up and see if it has a problem. Also try opening and closing the screen section and watch to see if there is any change i the display. Laptops usually have no generic parts and you will need to contact the manufaturer for any replacements. Posting the make and model of your laptop can help others here give you better advice.

A:LCD vertical line

I'm not sure exactly what that is. Do you mean there's a line there when its turned on only, or is it always there, even when shut off?

If its there when it's shut off then it sounds like a pressure crack on the screen to me. Hopefully its not that. I had a nasty on one my Sidekick 2 once. x.x

But even if it is, if its a not interfering with the picture try to disregard it. That's all I can say.

Hey..

I need help..

I bought a 15 inch NEC lcd about a month ago and have been using it without any problems. Just this morning a red vertical line appeared about 7/8ths of an inch from the left. I have the latest driver with windows xp. The line doesn't seem to actually be on the desktop and it overlaps everything. I've also tried resetting the monitor configurations. Does anyone have any idea of how to get rid of the red line?

Thanks
Hoameng

A:NEC LCD...red vertical line

IT seems that Part of your LCD monitor is not functioning Correctly. Under Normal Circumstances your monitor maybe do a POST ( power on self Test ) and the line is Initated that way. You may want to try Booting into Safe Mode and DOS prompt to see if the line goes away. If its does Its mostlikely a driver issue. If not then its the monitor and you should return it. Also try hooking up another monitor to it just to see if you have the same prob. JFYI you have Display adapters and Monitor Drivers make sure you have both up to date.

Alright, I have a Toshiba notebook and the other day a vertical, thin, purple line appeared on the the right hand side of my display. I didn't drop my notebook or damage it in any way, no over clocking of any sort ether. It doesn't show on screen shot and when hooked up to an external monitor it works like a charm. I would like to know if the problem is fixable because my warranty is void. I am surprised this has happened because the laptop is only about a year and a half old. Thank you for your assistance.

A:Vertical Purple Line

That Purple Line is a dead or stuck pixel it could have been your Graphics Card but since it worked alright in a External Monitor it indicates the LCD Screen is faulty, this means you need to replace the LCD Screen. I'm not quite sure how to take them off or fix them back on but someone on here maybe able to help a bit better with that.

You could try looking on Ebay for your Toshiba Laptop Model, they sell laptops that may have 1 part not working (they will indicate what is not working) but will be a cheap option for your LCD Screen as well as other spare parts for your laptop compared to buying the Screen on its own here is an example - http://www.priorityelectronics.com/laptop-lcd-screens/toshiba-lcdscreens.html

But now when i try to play WoW i get a weird crash that involves my screen being covered in multi-colored vertical lines and an extremely horrid sound. This forces me to hard reboot. Note: Symptom is similar to one described in earlier note by SJackman.
There are small vertical line grids around desktop icons and the cursor on my display. Also, video shown on Microsoft Media player shows larger (longer and thicker) vertical lines over the images. (The video otherwise plays normally.) The lines do not appear on my desktop background or around the little icons on the Windows taskbar. As I type this note, I can see small vertical grids below my cursor pointer, but not elsewhere on the screen. Other than the vertical lines, my PC's functions seem normal.
Only recent install that I recall, other than Microsoft upgrades, is a Flash uninstall/install. I have Windows XP and a Dell 8300 PC.
I would welcome any suggestions.

Hello everyone!

A couple days ago, my LCD monitor has been showing a pink vertical line towards the right side of the screen. This is rather annoying. Whenever this is present and I turn off the monitor & turn it back on, it fails to find the video source and goes to sleep mode. I attached a picture of my issue to this thread.

This pink line doesn't appear immediately. It usually shows up after about 5-15 minutes of computer use, and very rarely disappears on its own. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Vertical Pink Line on LCD Monitor

Hook another computer up to it to test.

If same pink line shows up, then you know the LCD is failing.

If the pink line doesn't show up, then you know it's an issue with your GPU (either drivers, or hardware failure).

The problem is something called a column driver. There is a connection to every column of pixels on your screen. If you have a wxga screen, there are 1280 of them. The connection is made by a strip of tape with contacts, that is held against the back of the panel by the adhesive between the contacts. Sometimes, the tape works its way loose due to age or vibration. It can be strained through incorrect routing of cables, etc during assembly or repair. It can also come loose if the screen is hit or strained. The "fix" is to replace the screen. If it is under warranty, I suggest calling Lenovo.

A:blue vertical line on my desktop

This could be an issue with your video cable to the monitor (make sure it is secure).

It could also be an indicator that the monitor or video card has issues. Can you hook the monitor to another pc, and try a different monitor on your pc?

If the line is appearing in the monitor's built-in menus, the fault is with the monitor's internal electronics. Repair or replacement may be your only choices.

A:Vaio Vertical black line

Hi

If you can it would be useful to connect the netbook to an external monitor. If it is no longer present (and I think it won't be but , then the problem is with the laptop screen. It is possible that it could also be the connection from the netbook MB to the screen.

I have a user who gets a vertical line on the right edge of envelopes when she prints addresses to them. This only occurs when utilixing the "Envelopes and Labels" function. If she creates an envelope by opening a new doc, then setting it to a #10 envelope, the line does not appear. Only when using the function. Any ideas why this happens? She is running Office 2K, printing to a HP DeskJet 990Cse. I can provide more details and even a scan of a printout if needed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tech Support,

I have a red pixelated vertical line that started growing yesterday. It is one third of the way horizontally on my desk top. It extends into my lower menu bar and was just halfway up my screen yesterday. Today it is bolder and goes almost completely the entire way up. I have tried rebooting and virus scans with no luck. The computer is several years old and in constant use, so I imagine something has "bit-the-dust." Thx

I recently bought a new HannS.G 22Inch widescreen TFT monitor and it displays a 1 pixel width vertical line of varying colours from top to bottom, which overprints the entire display, however it only shows up in the operating system, i.e.not in the bios at startup. The line is on the right hand side and does disappear and reappear randomly, but not with a restart. I have used it on two computers with the same effect.

Any ideas would be much appreciated

Cheers

A:Vertical Line on Monitor display?

Well the first thing is that since it's new it's under warranty so you'll probably be sending or taking it back. Since it shows the same problem on two machines I'd bet on it.

The only other thing I can suggest is to make sure you're running it in it's native resolution and refresh rate.

Hi guys, this is my first post on one of these forums. I have 2 vertical white lines that go all the way down the display on the laptop. Had the laptop just over 12 months therefore is out of warranty. How can I fix this issue? Will HP be able to replace or repair this? Also is there an email address to contact HP customer support as I couldnt find one on the website. Thanks.

I started seeing a very thin (1 or 2 pixels) vertical red line directly in the center of the Flash Player window about 6 weeks ago and I have been unable to fix it.  The red line does not appear when I am watching videos in VLC Media Player, and it does not occur in all Flash Player videos, but it does appear in most of them.  I rolled my driver back from 16.300.2311.0 to 16.150.2401.1002 and it was still occurring,  So I reinstalled the current version of the driver and chipset.  I'm using the Radeon Crimson software, AMD Radeon R7 Graphics, on a Windows 10 64 bit OS, with an AMD A10-7850K  processor.  Can someone please provide me with the steps to get rid of this vertical line?  Thanks very much.

I have a westinghouse LCM17v2SL monitor . I shut down my whole computer to move . It was shut down for 3weeks & when I rehooked everything back up & restarted computer & monitor I all of a sudden have a green vertical line running from top to bottom of screen . I cannot move it at all . Line stays on monitor even after I remove the cable to the computer . Any help would be appreciated

A:green vertical line on monitor

Make sure that the cable is connected properly on the back of the monitor and the video card. Then try to go to the system BIOS of the PC to see if the green line is apparent. If that is the case the problem is not the video driver. Then try to run the monitor self test to see if the green line will show up. Look for instructions on your manual. If the green line is showing up on the self-test then you have a monitor issue and it needs to be replaced otherwise it is a video card problem and needs to be replaced.

Got a 19" gateway LCD monitor with a thin blue vertical line on the very right edge of the screen. However, when I open another window, or log on to the internet, it's gone! It is only there on my desktop display.

Any thoughts or answers on what it may be?

On my Dell Studio 1749 a vertical white line has appeared about 3 inches in from the left hand side.  It started off about 1mm wide but is gradually increasing in width and is now about 4mm wide.  There is no problem on an external monitor when connected.
Is this likely to be a fault with the panel or a chip problem?
Thank you.

A:Vertical white line appeared on display.

Hi  Ian,
This could be an issue with the LCD. To isolate the issue follow below steps:

Check if the vertical lines appear in BIOS screen (Restart the computer and tap F2 on Dell logo).
Also restart the computer and check the display in Safe mode (Restart the computer and press F8 on Dell logo and select Safe mode)
Run the diagnostics on the computer (Restart the computer by holding the” D” and power button and wait till the LCD test completes) and let me know the test result for LCD.

Awaiting your response!

Up until yesterday I had a neat vertical dotted line separating some of my folders in the taskbar. Suddenly it disappeared, as did three of my folders. I've put the folders back but want to keep them apart from others and can't remember how I created the line. I've Googled this numerous times but can only find the empty folder solution which I can't seem to make work.

Can anybody please tell me in simple terms how to reinstall the separator?

A:Solved: Strange vertical line on desktop

Can't see the screenshot while I am at work (damn internet police haha) but will have a look when I get home in a while.

However, it doesn't sound like a fault as such, sounds to me like a bit of software to manipulate the desktop in someway.

Hopefully someone who is familiar with it will also respond, but will look at screenshot and see what I can find out if they don't.
