Mother Board Question

Q: Mother Board Question

I have a mother board that went out. My question is if I replace the mother board with one that is not the same model as the one that malfunctioned will my system still function properly or will I have some errors/diffulties. I am running Windows XP on my machine.
To make the question clear will replacing the motherboard with a different model one cause my operating system any errors or will my system work properly. Thank you for answers in advanced

Preferred Solution: Mother Board Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Asus Motherboard for Intel P4 Processors Model P4PE-X

thats the mother board im going to buy

and this is the ram im gonna buy

CRUCIAL MICRON 512MB 64x64 PC 3200 DDR RAM

is it ok that i only buy one stick? to me i would think it should be fine, but i read some review from a motherboard that said it is a good motherboard if i just wanted to use 1 stick of ram, didnt really know what that meant, i know back in the day some MB's needed to have atleast 2 sticks of ram, not sure if this is the case now... you guys have all been soo helpful.... just wanted to say thanks and that i appreciate all the feedback... :grinthumb

A:question about mother board/ram

Nah, you can use 1 stick or the maxium sticks of memory it holds without the performance being affected by how many sticks your using (except if you were to use 2 sticks in Dual Channel mode).

I just bought a cd/rw to install into my computer but I also bought another hard drive to add onto my old one because I needed more memory. There were only ports available for the installation of the extra harddrive but I just bought the burner and don't have ports enough to hook it up. Do I need a new mother board with extra ports or is there some kind of addition that I can buy to hook up the internal burner?

Whats cheaper?

A:HELP URGENT Mother Board Question

There should be 2 'ports' as you call them on your motherboard.
One is called a Primary IDE controller, the other is a Secondary IDE controller.
Each controller can support 2 devices, though most of the time the Ribbon Cables (the really thin, flat cables) that come with PCs only have 1 connector.
You can purchase a "Y" ribbon cable at any computer repair type store. Just be sure you ask for an 80pin ribbon cable.
So basically, you can have 4 drives easily installed into your computer, whether it be 2 hard drives, a DVD and a CDRW, or any combination of those. Keep in mind the Floppy drive plugs into its own connection.
If you notice on each drive, there are jumper settings to identify the drive as a Master or Slave. Each IDE controller can accept 1 Master and 1 Slave only. If you have a "Y" ribbon cable (with 2 connectors), the MIDDLE connector needs to plug into the Slave, while the END connector needs to plug into the MASTER.
I hope this answers your question and isn't too confusing.
If you need me to clarify something, please ask.
If you have more than 4 drives, well, thats a whole nother story.

512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Board: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-6777

These are some of the stats on the Dell 2400 per Belarc:
Please look at the attachment for pic of the specs.

My question is: which of the boards would be a better fit for somone who just surfs and emails primarily. And as always, TIA.

A:Solved: 2 Mother Board specs and question

Firstly, because your computer is a Dell - most mobos will not fit as they are custom made for Dell and are often BTX type and not ATX (or M-ATX) it has only been in very recent times that some Dell machines come with ATX mobos.

However you could simply change your case and psu and mobo - then you have loads of options for upgrading.

I realize this is the 8.1 section but I'm sure someone here knows the answer since its about an image not XP.
I have a older pc with XP and I've made several images (complete cope of drive C) onto an external drive. I have several images I've made over the last year or so.
Now for the question. If the computer above needed a new mother board and the new one was an upgrade from the orginal, will the images I'm made with the old mother board work with this new board? I'm thinking the image will install but the pc won't work good if at all.

A:question about Accronis image and new mother board

Moved to the XP forum since you said the issue involves XP.

If by "upgrade" you mean newer and only slightly different from the original motherboard it is possible that the image will work and probable that you can talk Microsoft into activating it. If you can boot it then you can install the latest correct drivers. The more different the less likely the image will work and the less likely that Microsoft will not consider it a different computer.

I have a asus pentium 4, socket 478, intel 845, sdram,agp 4x, 2 gig processor mother board.

it says sd ram, does that mean my 2 gig processor/mother board wont support ddr ram?

and also, i want to upgrade my geforce 2 mx 400 vid card but almost all the vid cards above that are ddr ram. if my mother board doesnt support ddr ram, can i still use a ddr ram video card (will it just clock at lower speeds), or do i have to find a sd ram(pc 133) video card?

A:question about my mother board and video cards

yes that motherboard will support DDR RAM
and yes it will support a graphics card with DDR (a motherboard DOES NOT need to support DDR ram to run a DDR graphics card)

Hello,
I am wanting to get a new mother board, to use with the AMD XP 1700 or greater processor. I am wanting to sue RDRam. However all I see is DDRAM boards. Is DD and RD Ram the same thing??? If a mother board supports DDRam will it also support RDRam???
Is there any reomendation for a mother board that will use RDRam and the AMD chip???

Thanks,

Bear

A:Mother Board

Currently, there are no motherboards or chipsets that support RDRAM with AMD processors. It could be a possiblity in the future.

RDRAM and DDR RAM are not at all the same thing. They are two different types of memory. None of the memory types are interchangeable. A particular memory slot can only accept one type of memory. Some motherboards support two different types of memory, but they have separate slots for each type, and you can only use memory sticks of one type. You cannot use both types at one time.

You can use your Windows op system to reformat your hard drive, but then you would need to reinstall the operating system and you stated you do not have the disk.

What exactly are you trying to do? Why do you feel you need to reformat the drive?

One problem that has me perplexed . When a customers motherboard goes down , it means reformatting and re-installing XP. Of course all my customer info is gone. If you try to boot up With the new motherboard XP will not load. It launches a critical error and says the boot sector has a virus. I know that XP has this built in to prevent it from being installed on several different computers . This anti-piracy is based upon motherboards bios.

I will not build a computer with pirated software but when the legal owner of the PC and the software needs his computer fixed he should not have to lose all his info. This is when I miss 98 , ME. Under those most computers it was replace motherboard and after several reboots you were all ready to go with all your data intact.

has anybody come up with a work around for this ?

A:When Mother board goes w/XP

What kind of computer are we talking about? According to MS, if you get an OEM motherboard from the manufacturer, with SLP (System-Locked Preinstall) in the BIOS, that's all you need. They don't mention any re-install. Maybe you can sort it out from This Page Is it possible to do a repair install and save the data?

It should be an ATX form factor. I have an 8300 and it's a standard ATX mobo. The only thing you need to be careful of is that there isn't anything proprietary like the front panel connections or power supply connections. Sometimes they use things that are not standard.

Hi Buzz,
It sounds like you need to remap your keyboard. Go the following Microsoft webpage:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&displaylang=en

and download the Server 2003 tools software for free (good for XP too). Run the "remapkey.exe" tool to reprogram your keyboard--provided you're running Windows XP, of course.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

DDR3 comes with high clocks but also with price and high latency. So, high quality DDR2 would(COULD in some occasions) still outdo DDR3. To a point, latencies can determine the performance more than clocks.

Also during this time, the CPU fan was screaming. What's going on here? Did I miss a step?

A:Mother board

You can download sisoftsandra from http://www.tweakfiles.com It will identify some motherboards or else the hard way. Look at it and find the manufacturers make and model or the fcc number. The fcc number is generally located right around the dimm slots.

or you can try ctbios, it will read the bios rom's and report what is there. http://www.windrivers.com/identity/mboard/biosid.htm

I have a Compaq Presario CQ5210f with a M2N68-LA (Narra6) motherboard and I also have a old Compaq Presario SR1010NX with a MS-6577 (Giovani, Giovani2) mother board and it seems like the second mother board is better than the first. I would like to know which one is better because I have both computer towers but only use the CQ5210f. I am planning on putting in a new graphics card soon and I cant afford a whole new computer or motherboard right now so I have to pick between these to.

A:Which Mother Board is better?

No contest the second one. The first is an ancient (in computer terms) Pentium 4/DDR/AGP based board, whereas the first is a much more recent AMD AM3/DDR3/PCI-E board that the Compaq bios allowing can up to probably the Phenom II x4 965, which will eat that old P4 for breakfast (would eat for lunch and dinner too).

Have an E Machine PC it is not booting up, so, I open up the computer. I saw the CPU fan was not running and the processor was hot. I went out purchase used CPU Celeron, the computer is doing the same thing and not booting up. Do you think the CPU and the mother board is bad. The power supply is good, the fan in power supply is working. I also used a power supply tester.
Thanks!

A:cpu and the mother board

Was your old CPU a Celeron as well? Same speed?

You may want use the Clear CMOS jumper to clear the BIOS settings or you can pull out the CMOS battery for a few minutes.

Try reseating the RAM and video card as well. Or try a known good piece of RAM and a good video card. You can disconnect all the drives and remove any unneccessary PCI cards like a modem.

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.
It has been a few years now since I have built my own system.
I do not think the old days of FDISk exist anymore, I could be wrong.

I am thinking of building another system, this Pentium 4 3.00GHz system is getting a little tired.

I have a hardrive that is filled with a lot of cool stuff. My question is :
If I build a new system Mobo/RAM/Video/ etc. will my hardrive bomb out on me and not work with the new system ?
It has been a while and I am getting a little rusty with the new stuff.
Thank you for your time and any information will be appreciated.

A:New Mother Board and System

I do a lot of upgrades and new builds. What size is your old HD? Is it SATA? Smallest HD installed here in SA is now 160GB and SATA is the option.

What I do as basic now is install 160 GB system HD, backed up by a 250GB min data drive for Movies/Music/Data etc.

If you are serious about upgrade that's gonna last you another 5 years or so and handle all the desirable stuff that makes a computer worth owning, why not go Core Duo min 2.3 GHz rather than single core?

Put your old HD into semi-retirement and annexe it as another optional "slave" drive for accessing your cool stuff. You'll need to have the installation discs for your OS and programs for the new drive.

One trick I often do is an image backup of the old hard drive and do a restore onto the new drive. There's a lot of ducking and diving to set it up, but the benefits are often a nice way of moving house and keeping the furniture to come with.

I always check to keep the MOBO's old/new chipsets in the family, eg. VIA on old ... VIA on new, so I get minimum upsets on sound/video driver compatibility. New MOBO will come with install disc anyway.

When the system fires up and boots into XP I do a check disk that sorts out any loose ends on the reboot.

I see you are a regular here for problem solving so I am sure you are well capable of climbing in and giving yourself a worthwhile upgrade to drive around with the some of the newer models LOL.
And just for fun you could safely check your old hard drive (switched to master with the new one safely unplugged from power and IDE strap to se if it boots up (ahh... the old faithful as it used to be... yeah )

Rebuilds are fun and very rewarding, like pimping ya ride.

A:Mother board change

Welcome to TechSpot

This won't work, the new nVidia mobo uses completely different drivers from the previous Via one. These Via-drivers are currently part of XP, and they dont work with your new mobo.

You have 2 options:
1) Buy another harddisk, make it the Master and change the old disk to Slave. Install XP from scratch with all new mobo-drivers, install other programs. Copy personal data from old HD to new HD. Format old HD and use as storage. Works guaranteed and is the cleanest solution.

2) Put the old mobo back in, make backups of personal data, then go into Device Manager, and uninstall all motherboard-specific drivers and hardware.
Shut down XP. Swap mobos again. Boot on the new mobo. XP will install default mobo-drivers. Then install the CD that came with the new mobo.
This MIGHT work, but not necessarily. NOT advisable as there will be old drivers and mess floating around.

Okay, so me and my brother are planning on building a computer soon.

For the CPU, we chose to go with an AMD Athlon X2 64 6000+
GPU, and 8800GT, when we can get our hands on one of coarse.
For the cooling unit for the CPU, i had the ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm suggested to me.
For the RAM we decided to go with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145098.

I am still hacing problems choosing a mother board and PSU, it's been a long time since i've even swapped boards and PSU's out of cases. So i was wondering if anybody could suggest a good mother board for gaming. Preferably a more inexpensive board, but the price doesn't really matter that much. And also if someone could suggest a PSU, or has better suggestions for RAM and a cooling unit, that would help a lot.

A:help with picking mother board and PSU

First, spend the extra seven dollars and go with this RAM. It is faster than the RAM you picked out, and it is made by Corsair, one of the most trusted makers of memory.

As for a motherboard, you might want to consider this one. SLI-Ready, AM2 socket, DDR2 RAM, gigabit ethernet, relatively high customer reviews, and has then name ASUS, a respected motherboard maker. I narrowed down your choices on NewEgg to these ten, assuming you hope to set up SLI sometime.

I'm not entirely sure that your cooler will be sufficient. The cooler I use for my Athlon 6000+ is this Zalman 9700. It is three times more expensive, not to mention huge, but it does the job.

Hi if the given number of your motherboard is correct then it would definitely support 400 mhz frequency of ram just click on the link you sent and check 2nd point in the 6 point description of the specifications of the motherboard. And regarding having sticks of 2 different frequencies there might be a compatibility issue.

Check the writing printed on the motherboard circuit areas, usually there is a model name somewhere. (I just struck a PC Chips motherboard that didn't though, had to download Everest Home but that only helps with an installed motherboard).

Otherwise, google the reallly long numbers and see what you get.

You may need to update the BIOS, however before you update you should check the BIOS string to determine if the board you bought is a standard Intel board, or an Intel proprietary Dell board.

If you flash with an incorrect BIOS you've got big problems.

Theres a good chance that your Restore discs wont work with the new motherboard and when using XP you usually cant replace a motherboard without doing a clean install of Windows. The old motherboard drivers will keep Windows from loading or make the computer unstable. Replacing a board isnt that hard. Just make notes of where everything goes. The first time I did it I marked every cable with tape. I replaced a board in an eMachine. Physically it worked fine except the front panel connector was proprietary and I couldnt connect it to the new motherboard.

A:Is My Mother Board Fried??????

From the information you supplied, most likely you have either a bad main board or a bad power supply. I recommend you test the power supply with a power supply tester. In the absence of a tester, you can try a known-good power supply or take the power supply to a shop that can test it for you.

I have Win7 Home Premium. I need to replace the motherboard.
Will I have to go thru Microsoft to re-register my OS? I initially used the Win7 32 bit upgrade version. Thanks for any advise.

Since it is a retail upgrade version of home premium then the below tut will be needed to ensure successful activation

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

If your windows still does not activate upon re-installation the follow this tut

Activate Windows 7 by Phone

Maybe gone?

Also,l on a different note-

Net card settings, should be left at auto matic or should it be set to one of the settings on the list

Thanks

Last night I tried Board Mother Replacement to replace the mother board on my Dell Inspiron e laptop I bought the replacement part Mother Board Replacement from an Ebay store and it is still under warranty days After taking apart my entire laptop and putting the whole thing back together--a job that took my friend and I three hours--we plugged it in for the moment of truth The battery light came on so far so Mother Board Replacement good Then we hit the power button and nothing happened Well almost nothing The machine appeared to turn on All three lights on the the bottom of the LCD went on but that s it The fan didn t start the monitor didn t start The hard drive light was on but didn t appear to be reading at all i e no blinking or noise I m quite perplexed Everything appeared to go back together perfectly with the possible exception of the diskette drive cable clip which we weren t exactly sure whether to put back in over under or through the disk drive data cable We eventually put it through For instructions and pictures of the process check out link http support dell com support edocs systems pblan removing htm Everything else seemed to go back together seemlessly We were very careful with screws and put all the right sizes back into their correct places What could be causing this Have I received a defective part Are there any other explanations I suppose a possible explanation is that the processor and or video board are not quite connected correctly but they seemed to fit perfectly and snap down firmly when we put it back together Please help nbsp

Have a K7S5A Pro 5.0 mother board
XP Pro_SP2 operating system

Walked away from a machine that had sound, returned later to a machine without sound.
Speakers check out OK _ No sound from front or rear head phone jacks _ Device Mgr, indicates that all is working _ Sounds & Audio Devices Prop. shows "No Audio Device"
I tried out a driver updater program but ended up going to ESC? for updated drivers. But no help.

Have I missed an easy setting change or something? or am I looking at a soon to be dead MB?

I inadvertantly fried my motherboard by plugging a usb device into a usb port upside down. (the little white piece had fallen out of the usb port which allows usb cables to plugged in only one way). My question is - if a motherboard shorts out does that mean that my processor, sound card, etc are also toast? I will replace just the motherboard if that is all that is bad, but if I have to replace the processor, sound card, etc then I might as well buy a new pc. Is there any way to test the processors and sound cards to see if they still work? Thanks for your help in advance.
