HP Pavillion dv9574ea notebook - headphone jack doesn't work

Q: HP Pavillion dv9574ea notebook - headphone jack doesn't work

Several weeks ago I bought the new HP Pavillion dv9574ea notebook and the HEADPHONE SOCKETS do not work - there are two. Only the speakers work. Even when I put a working set of headphones which are the right size, I cannot hear anything through the hearphones. The normal loud speakers however keep working, although they should switch off when the headphones are plugged in.

Please see the screenshot of the drivers active (in system 32 folder) and other details about the headphone socket.

Thank you for any help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer was recently attacked by a virus. I had microsoft fix the problem but now my headphone jack doesnt work. The speakers work fine but when i plug in the headphones only the speaker plays sound. I went to "control panel> Hardware and Sound> Sound> Playback" and looked for the speaker/headphone icon but the only one that was there was speaker/HP I don't wanna mess with it till I know for sure. Is this the same thing or did it somehow get deleted in the mix. If it did how can I get it back on there? Thanks

I had to have the hard drive replaced in my computer due to a defect in the drive. Ever since the hard drive was replaced, the head phone plug-in that is on the face of the tower does not work, but the speaker plug-in that is located in the back of the tower, works just fine.

I cannot figure out what is wrong. The audio driver installed for my system was obtained from the Dell website along with the majority of my other drivers.
Any help would be great.

A:Toshiba Portege R705-P35 Notebook Headphone Jack Problems

You might not be able to have a better jack installed onto the motherboard, because they are engineered to such tight tolerances, and the existing jack is usually a fairly thin part made of plastic.

One option would be to have a shop solder jumpers to the board, and bring a better jack to the outside of the laptop. The jumpers would have to be secured to the shell in such a way as to prevent pulling on the mainboard.

There is another option. You could purchase a set of speakers which have a headset convenience jack, leave those speakers plugged in to the laptop, and plug the headphones into the speaker.

I have P50 that I use with the 40A50230US docking station. I love the thing but I can't get my headphones to work in  the "1x Stereo/Mic Combo Audio Port" on the docking station. The headphones work fine in the headphone jack of the laptop. My expectation is that pluging headphones into the docking station and docking the laptop in the dock, the sound would automatically come through the dock and disconnect the speakers on the laptop.  Instead, the sounds continues to play through the laptop speakers and the headphones are silent. Any help will be greatly appreciated. John

I see that a lot of people have had this problem, and I have been trying to fix it but I am out of ideas. I have a Compaq Presario V3000 and ever since I installed Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, the headphone jack doesn't work. No entry for Headphones shows up in my Playback devices. I am pretty sure it is that my current driver is not compatible with Win7, but is there any other driver that I would be able to use in order to get this to work? The laptop speakers work, however they do not mute. Please let me know if you can help or if you need more info about my hardware. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

When you bought the computer was the software already installed on the computer or did you install the software.

If you bought it with the software preloaded did you buy a set of recovery disk's also, if not you will need to get the recovery disk's or you can make a set if you have another computer to go to like maybe a friend. Here is a great tutorial...

I have a headset set with a mic. It has 3.5mm plugs for the mic and the speakers. Just recently they stopped working together. What I mean is if I have either one of them plugged in, that one works. If I have both plugged in, the sound manager appears as if neither of them are plugged in. I've tried other headphones with the jacks and get the same result. I've tried reinstalling the driver, doing a system restore and using CCleaner to clean my registry. I've also messed around with just about every setting in the audio manager. Anyone have any ideas? It's odd that they work independently, which leads me to believe that the insertion detection is working just fine.

I have a Toshiba Satellite R845-S95 with Windows 7.

Hi, I own a new X1 Carbon (with the terrible adaptive function keys), and my combo audio/mic jack does not seem to work properly. Specifically, when I try to plug in headphones (or use an application like Skype) while the sound is running from the speakers, it does not switch. Conversely, if I start a video wearing headphones, and unplug them, the sound does not come out of the speakers. Can someone please advise how to troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance.

A:X1 Carbon combo headphone/mic jack does not work

Hi Dave0888,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per your query we understood that you are facing the issue with Audio port on ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
Please set the default setting on Realtek High Definition audio application from control panel.
If you are unable to find the application or set the application, please download the driver from Lenovo Support page and install it.
Also please download ThinkVantage System Update utility and install it, and after installing it please run the application so that it will check for the latest drivers and automatically install it.
After installing all the application please restart the system and check it once.
Below is the link to enter the downloads page and download latest application accordingly, please click on "Select Product" then in "QUICK PATH" enter the MTM no. select the exact model.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

I have to hold it to one side for it to work right, is there a way to fix it?

A:headphone jack is not working right, I have to hold it to work

Sounds like the jack is busted. That happens if you use them a lot. Any moment on the plug puts a lot of stress on the guts of the jack and on the little solder pads that hold it on the board. You might be able to reflow the solder joints if you feel like taking the notebook that far apart. Personally I would just buy an inexpensive USB sound dongle, under $4 from China, and be really careful of any jacks connected to the notebook moving forward.

I turned my computer off for a week. The first time it's ever been off in 5 years. It has an onboard Realtek soundcard. It worked perfectly before leaving for vacation. I come back and there is no sound. Headphones work and the speakers work when plugged into the front panel headphone jack.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and making Onboard Sound Card "Enabled" in BIOS. Is it likely that the onboard sound just stopped working while being shut off or is there another underlying issue?

Will the headphones work when plugged into the back panel (green jack)?

I recently run into this problem. The first time I tried to use it, it seems that the green jack for my headphones doesn't work at all. Plug in any pair and they don't even recognize it being there, as seen in Control Panel.

What might be the problem? The case has a bad jack, or the connector on the motherboard?

It's quite possible sufficient damage was done, either by the plug getting stuck or the work in removing it, that the contacts inside the jack have been forced into cutting the speakers circuits off as happens when plugging into it. From the number of Notebooks I've had to junk and take apart first I'd say the only real solution is a new motherboard or a new Notebook. If it were a Desktop one can disable the onboard audio system and get an Add-in Sound card. Or maybe try the USB type speakers.

recently bought a Dell latitude E6420 i5-2520M 8GB and I am experiencing a very annoying issue with the speakers.
The sound coming from the speakers worked until I plugged in the headphones jack into the computer for the first time - when I unplugged the headphones internal speakers stop to work completely.
What I have tried so far with no success:

Uninstall and reinstall windows audio/sound drivers
Tried Realtek drivers
Disabled headphones
Recovery and reinstall Windows 10

What is strange is that every time I uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers the speakers start to work again until i plug the jack of the headphones and again speakers stop to work. Any Idea?
Please let me know what you need to know about my computer to better understand the problem and I will amend the question accordingly.

First, the "My System Specs" is where you fill in what you have.

Does the internal speakers on the laptop work? Is the audio OK on the internal speakers?

The SoundBlaster program(s) is a software enhancement to the basic audio chip (ReaklTek). Many PC's now come with some type of enhancement such as the SoundBlaster or in the case of HP PC's its "Beats Audio".

It still doesn't acknowledge the speakers or the headphone s when plugged in. What is the standard for the 4 way audio jack on Lenovo G50-80?I have just cut and remade my 2 separate cables for audio and mic, and soldered them in a comba jack terminal.I used the OMTP standard ( 1(sleeve)=ground, 2=mic, 3=right and 4(tip)=left), but if I am listening to music while using the mic, the music sound will also be recorded in the microfone, and louder than my voice.Maybe its a AHJ standard ( 1(sleeve)=mic 2=ground, 3=right and 4(tip)=left)? Thanks for the help,

I am using a Tiny Media Notebook PIII, 700, Windows 98 SE. The computer is about four years old, and by now the headphone jack, which I use as my sound out port, is about fryed. The contacts have deteriated, and I can not replace the jack, as it is connected to the motherboard. Thus, aside from opting for a usb sound out, such as taking up the Soundblaster MP3+ option, I was wondering if I could reprogram the way in which sound is connected to external devices such as headphones. There are three jacks on the front of my computer: the headphone jack, the microphone jack and er I think it is a line out jack - the later jack which I have never used. Is there anyway I can swop/substitute the connection via the headphone jack say for the microphone jack or line out jack. Is there anyway I could do this?

A:Substituting the headphone jack with the microphone jack

No, afraid not. Each jack has it's own circuitry which provides for the needed resistance and other parameters. What you could do, if you got to the mobo itself, is to physically replace the jack but that's a major pain on a laptop.

You can try two things, one is to use alcohol and a Q-Tip to thoroughly clean the jack, then use a small bit of steel wool to sand inside with and then again with the alcohol and two, if the jack's worn too big for a tight connection, is to go to Radio Shack and buy a plug in adapter for that size jack. Some come with a slightly oversized male end and then you could plug into the female end and have a tight connection.

I'd like to plug my speakers into the back speaker jack and headphones to the front jack. I can't do this and have both work at the same time. I have a cheapo Insight speaker with a volume puck that lets me plug a headphone jack but then the speakers turn off.

Seems to me with front panel and rear panel jacks I should be able to do this but so far, I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

The headphone works fine but Windows won't detect the microphone.
But when I connect the microphone in rear jack, it works fine.
The problem is that I have a combined Microphone and Headphone system. Either I plug them both on rear or on front. I want to plug them at the front jack because at the rear jack, the headphones won't sound well in line it jack(the blue one). It used to work fine in Windows 7 but the front panel won't work in windows 8. please help me as this is screwing me off.
I use BIOSTAR G31M Motherboard with VIA HD Audio.

A:Front Panel Mic jack doesn't work

Check the connector from the Front Panel to he motherboard (with the PC powered off, reseat (unplug then plug back in) the connector. There could also be a problem with the front panel headphone jack.

Since this is apparently a custom built system, check the connection from the front panel. Many cases have both a HD Audio and an AC97 audio connector. If you have an HD Audio connector, that is the preferred connector.

The earphone jack on the front of the TDK 311040 CD drive/burner will not play. My speakers work just fine, so I do not understand TDK tech help telling me to hook up the sound card cable to the drive. They also said it will only work for audio CDs which is what I was trying to play.
Anybody got a suggestion?

A:Earphone jack on CD drive doesn't work

It has little to do with the audio cable or the ide cable. Try it with different headphones, adjust the volume control, and use the play button on the front of the cd-drive not a software player like winamp. Some software players will play the cd with digital playback and therefore you won't get any sound out of the front jack.

I plugged my headphones in one of the kacs at the front of my computer, which I think was the wrong one, as I heard a pulse type noise and then my computer restarted. after this the on/off button won't work and the screen is blank but the disc drive comes out and everything inside and out is connected.
Does anyone know what I could have done and how to fix this?
Any info would be much appreciated...I'm really lost without my own computer

A:Put headphones in the wrong jack and now the on/off button doesn't work and...

Try following

1. Unplug computer's power cord from the wall (or if this is laptop the battery charger from the power).
2. (Remove laptop battery, if this is laptop).
3. Wait at least 5 minutes.
4. Replug everything back and power (and pray if you believe in god).

If this wouldn't help you damaged your motherboard (or power supply for desktop computer). If this is desktop try other power supply.

Well, I used my microphone on my laptop once to call a friend on Skype. Everything worked fine, even with my headphones plugged into the audio jack. But the day after, I try and do the same but my microphone isn't even working. After lots of frustration and trial and error, I find that it's the headphones being plugged into the audio jack that's causing this. Does anyone know how to fix this? Something simple, right? I use my headphones when I'm calling anyone. I don't want anyone to hear and I hate headsets with a burning passion. They make my head hurt, so is there any way to fix this? Thanks (:

A:Microphone Doesn't Work When Headphones are in Audio Jack

Try refreshing the audio. Go to the device manager, RIGHT click on the entry for the RealTek HD audio, then LEFT click "Uninstall". DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the audio. This fixes any Windows/Audio corruption and many other problems. If you are lucky it will take care of your problem.

a friend has asked me to have a look at a laptop that hes had lying around for a while, the only problem with this machine (its a 'digital' HiNote VP) is that the far right side of the keyboard doesn't work correctly e.g when enter is pressed it do anything (most of the time minimise windows) sometimes however it does actually function properly.

I'm assume that because of the keyboard doing this its probably had something spilt on it at one stage, but I've opened the keyboard up and its all clean. Just wondering what people think could cause this and if its possible to try and fix the keyboard or should I just try to locate a replacement keyboard?

I've already ruled out a software problem because the keyboard also plays up in the BIOS in DOS etc (its running Windows 98)

A:Far-Right side of notebook keyboard doesn't work

Well, there are a lot of possibilities here. I would do the following:

Boot to a command prompt. If the keys don’t work there, you have eliminated a problem with the operating system. If they work there, it is most likely an operating system problem.

If the laptop has been disassembled, check the keyboard to motherboard ribbon cable (if one exist) and make sure it is not damaged.

Just because you don’t see anything that looks like a spill, does not necessarily mean something wasn’t spilt in it.

You could take a shot at replacing the keyboard to see if that is the problem. If that is not the problem, then it is most likely a controller problem on the motherboard – this does not happen very often.

Does the laptop have an external keyboard/mouse (PS/2) connector? If it does, you could try an external keyboard to see if it will work. If that does not work either, then you most likely have a problem with the motherboard.

All in all, with the keyboard working part of the time, I would say that it needs to be replaced.

I hope that helps a little.

If yes then your issue is most likely similar to this article. As per these specs, the Y50 uses an audio combo jack (headphone and mic). Although this port supports various mobile headphones, you may need to get a PC Headset to 3.5mm Smartphone Adapter if you're using a traditional headset with a and mic connector.

It is recommended to fill out your system specs. I have no idea what your system is or what audio driver/manager you are using.

If you have a realtek HD audio card- Install the audio manager, and set it to allow setting to pop up when jacks are used. That way you can tell it if you inserting headphones, mic, etc, and it will mute the external speakers and use the headphones-otherwise it plays out the speakers (this is common if you have a realtek card, and use the default Microsoft hd sound driver/software codecs. You may also note the "volume knob" does not work)

If you have a realtek card install the realtek driver/audio manager here:

Hi guys I have a problem with my quot just over year old quot HP notebook cnx My headphone jack appears to be faulty because when Faulty Headphone Jack I insert ANY headphones speakers sound only comes from the left side When I wiggle the wire a lot then I get stereo sound but as soon as I let go it goes one sided again How frustrating This is a problem that has been getting worse and worse over time with more and more wiggling required to get stereo sound as time goes by Is this problem repairable I should add that the speakers on the laptop itself do not suffer from this problem ONLY when external speakers headphones are connected to the jack does this occur The worst thing is that as it s a month over a year old it s also a month out of warranty Do these things have a timer on them in which they can work perfectly fine as long as you have a guarantee but blow up as soon as the guarantee s over LOL Perhaps i should consider buying a USB or PCMCIA sound card probably cheaper than getting it Headphone Jack Faulty repaired I don t know Help Thanks in advance nbsp

Hi,It seems that the headphone jack on my Lenovo Z40 has started to fail. I have to fiddle around with headphone cables to get proper sound, and my speaker doesn't produce any sound (presumably because the computer thinks headphones are plugged in). What are my options for repair? I assume the headphone jack is part of a board, how much would it cost to repair it?Thanks!

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my topic, and hopefuly reply.

Earlier today, I was on my laptop, and I closed the lid, headphones plugged in and working, operating perfectly fine, and locked the door behind me.

In no less then 2 minutes I returned, and the computer acted as if the headphones were not plugged in at all, playing from the built in speakers. I tried different pairs of headphones, all don't work, and I see no visible problems with any of them, I've checked them over multiple times for tears, exposed wires, and the like.

I think it may be something with the headphone jack itself internally, but frankly I know nothing about how the computer is built, so I wouldn't know.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, thank you in advance.

A:Headphone jack not working...?

Before ripping the laptop apart, virus scan, uninstall sound drivers and/or sound manager programs, reboot, reinstall sound drivers and/or sound man., reboot.

I have a Fugitsu Lifebook Series A laptop. It has always performed well in the past. I bought some higher quality Monster headphones and now no sound will come out of the headphones. It says that the phones are not plugged in when they are. I have run the troubleshooter in the control panel with no success.
Any suggestions?

A:Headphone jack in, no sound

Hi first test the headphones in another computer and if working there try reinstalling the sound driver available from the fujitsu support pages for your model.

I own an IBM T30 laptop, the headphone jack got damaged, the headphone jack still works if the headpnhone plug is inserted and held in a certain way.
I would like to know how to slide open the headphone, microphone plastic cover.
My goal is to replace the headphone jack if necessary, I have already removed one screw that clearly holds this plastic cover in place but this cover won't budge.
How simple is it to replace the headphone jack on this T30 ?

Thank You !

A:T30 headphone jack damaged

Can you solder?.... That will be the only way to replace the jack I am afraid And I would suspect you will have to remove the entire base of the laptop to reach the audio ports, not just one screw.. it just gets worse.... If you really need to you would be best paying to have it repaired at a shop.

I have just tried my headphone jack for the first time and the sound does not come through them. They still come out of speakers despte the headphone being plugged in. I have tried the headphones on other devices and they work fine. Looking on YouTube I have updated the drivers  and then put my headphones in the headphone socket, and checked the Sound driver (Realtek HD Audio) on the "Playback devices" tab -  it shows a headphone icon with a red down arrow next to it with a description "Realtek HD Audio 2nd Output" and "Not Plugged In". How do I get this socket to "plug in"  ? Or is this a hardware problem ? Thanks in advance for anyone's help.

i have a laptop computer and made the mistake of using my daughter's headphones. the tip came off of the plug-in part and is stuck inside the hole. any ideas on how i can get it out so i'm not stuck using dora the explorer headphones for the rest of my computer's life?

A:Stuck headphone jack

You could try using a paper clip to fish it out (MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF IF YOU START POKING AROUND INSIDE THE SOCKET). Unfortunately the socket is usually surface mounted to the edge of the motherboard. If you are handy with a soldering iron you could probably remove the socket and install a new one. Failing that it's "Dora the Explorer" for you!

My desktop system is pretty stable, runs well, never crashes.
Well, that is, almost never. I get a blue screen whenever I plug/unplug my headphones.

Has anybody ever heard of this one before?

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC. Over the past few months my headphone jack has not been working properly. It started off with the headphones having to be held in a certain place to prevent sound coming out of the speakers at the same time as the headphones (I have tried every pair of headphones i own) . Over time, this has been getting worse and now, sound comes out of the speakers regardless of whether i have any heaphones plugged in. The headphone jack is really wobbly and i'm assuming i'll need to take my pc to a repair shop? Thanks in advance

When I updated my computer was upgraded to windows 10, the headphone jack was working perfectly. All of a sudden, a few months ago, they wouldn't work. I tried everything that I could find. I tried reinstalling the IDT high definition audio CODEC. When I tried to update it, it came up with an error here: looked around my computer, and everything was plugged in correctly (I'm pretty sure). The headphone jack still dosen't work right now. It isn't the headphones; I plugged them in on my laptop, and they worked perfectly (also, it was brand new). I need help to fix them. Can someone give me a different method?

Hi Jeevan and welcome to the Forum. After you re-loaded Windows, did you reload the ASUS on-board sound drivers from the ASUS CD?

I have a 2.1 speaker set attached to my laptop that does not have its own headphone jack. So in order to listen to headphones I have to unplug the 2.1 from the headphone jack and plug in the headphones. I tried a cheap splitter but that didn't sound good.

What I would like is something that had two jacks that allowed me to keep the 2.1 plugged in all the time in one jack and when I want to use the headphones I could just plug them into the other jack. I would like both jacks whether used together or solo to have the same sound quality as a single jack... with no degradation in sound.

Lastly, I would like to be able to mute the 2.1 (using volume control on the speaker set) and still get great controllable sound out of the jack that have the headphones plugged in.

Is there something like that? Thanks.

I have an HP ze4145 (Laptop) and my headphone jack after 2 years has broken on me. Before it completely broke I would have to move the plug around inside the jack to try and get the right connection. Now that im completely missing a headphone jack I have two questions. First, is there any way i can disable the jack and force all of the audio to come out of my laptop speakers? and Second, Would i be able to buy a new jack or soundcard and how much would it cost on average? Thank you to anyone who can help.

A:Broken Headphone Jack

In case anyone else was having this same prob with the broken jack... i dont know how healthy this is for the comp, but i just got back from lunch and i had a peice of foil left, so i folded it up and jammed it in where the jack goes and success!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how it happened, but the headphone jack on my dell computer got ****** up. I probably kicked it or something, I don't know. All I do know is that it'll now only play audio out of the left channel. I can try to jingle it around to play out of both, but the second I take my hand off, it's lefty again.
Please, can someone help? This was one of my main gripes with the old crappy computer I had and this one is too new to be going through this crap all over again.
