Segate External Hard Drive How to test it

Q: Segate External Hard Drive How to test it

I have got an external segate hard drive that connected to my laptop through USB cable, I doubt that there is a problem, then I decided to test it by using : Segate seatool utility (windows version not dos version) that I have downloaded from segate site.

I can see the external hard drive :
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7627/segateutilitysd3.jpg

But the test option is unavailable!!!!

Is there any other utility that can test such a USB connected HD or any other barnd ?

I knew that we can connect faulty hard disk directly to the mother and then run the test from CD or floppy, but this is not feasible in my case

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am pretty sure that Western Digital's Diagnosis program will be able to do it. If you get an errors, however, the drive is most likely bad. http://support.wdc.com/download/?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3

If i plugin the drive it is detected by win7 and everything works. However next time i start the pc the drive isn't detected any more. I then have to unplug the drive do a re start and plug in again and the drive will be detected. However this is a pain to do each time. The Renesas electronic s usb 3.0 root hub is always missing from the device manager on start up. I have tried everything to fix and updating the driver for the usb but no luck. Also if i do a re boot while the drive is still plug in it will take longer for the windows to load even though the drive isn't still detected.

A:Segate usb external drive not detected at startup

Hmm, on my motherboard usb 3 is not native and like yours it uses renesas drivers. It is possible that it needs the windows drivers to load before being able to detect. (just a guess here)

Would it get detected if you scan for hardware changes in device manager? Try that please.

Hi Guys I recently installed Vista after having my machine running XP I have WD gb drives that I have both put into external enclosures both with gb partition each BOTH drives worked fine in XP I stress this Now here is the issue One of the drives works fine The other drive is showing up in Computer as quot Local Disk quot but does not recognise any partitions In hard disk managment it says that the disk is in raw format I took the drive into my friends computer who is running XP and the drive is still fine Every file there and completely writable I read an article the following quot The solution to this annoying problem I had it on one PC seems to be to locate and delete the file INFCACHE which may be corrupted and causing the problem To delete this file you will first have to modify its permissions so the users group can access it right-click on the file- gt Properties- gt Security INFCACHE file It s located at C Windows inf scroll down to the file Note to see INFCACHE you must set Windows Explorer to display hidden and system files quot So i tried that will Drive and (this Vista Hard External test you) and it did nothing I have installed all updates nothing To make matters worse I thought a reinstall of the generic driver would be External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) enough to kick start the new driver cache NOW when i plug the drive in i get quot Windows needs a driver to install this hardware quot FOR AN EXTERNAL HDD MAN WHATS WRONG Vista looks online for the driver but doesn t find anything I even tried to manuely locate the driver by selecting the default driver that windows was using for my External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you) second external harddrive they are exactly the same device afterall Still nothing I know that once I can actualy install the driver I could just format the drive in vista but i m not going to do that It is completly full to do that I would need another drive to backup onto I thought I could try to do a partition recovery on the drive but again I really do NOT want to since there is still a good chance that this will loose my data So Thoughts I think this will test alot of us here Nath nbsp

A:External Hard Drive and Vista (this will test you)

Ok , i got the drive installed properly again. So I am back to where I started.

Here is a interesting update, I installed [email protected] Partition Recovery to take a look at the drive. The program doesn't find anything wrong with the drive. In fact, it shows that the drive does have the partition and that there is nothing wrong with it. So I can't even "restore" the partition because the recovery software doesn't see the drive the same way that Vista does (and the drive letters are the same, so active partition reports, "I:\ (Data Backup)" and Windows reports "I:\ Local Disk RAW Format".

Any thoughts from anybody this time....

A:External SATA III USB hard drive runs slowly, how to test speed?

Data transfers to USB drives do seem to be slower than transfers to internal drives and I also have slowness with the front USB 2.0 ports. I use this product in my computer:
4-port USB 2.0 High Speed Front-Bay Hub - Black | C2G
Power comes from the PC's power supply and the data cable plugs into a port on the rear.
Haven't gotten a similar product for USB 3.0 ports yet but this page shows several:
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=usb+3.0+in...ub&ia=products
With Notebooks now including eSATA ports on some models I'm starting to think about that for my one Desktop that could use such a drive.

Hi there,

I won't get too deeply into the harrowing saga of how two external hard drives of mine died within days of each other. Rather, I'll just say that I would like to do a virus scan on several external hard drives (including/especially the one I just got to replace the others). In other words, I want to find out if there was a virus or something in the material that I'm putting on the hard drives that makes them die. Could this be possible? If so, how can I conduct a virus scan specifically on the external drives?

Thanks!
Sonya

well i found out why it wasnt shutting down, segate is not ending the drivers services when windows is shutting down, i booted the drive in linux and it shows that it is constantly trying to perform actions even though it is fully loaded. so next question, drive, or drivers?

I need to test a hard drive to see if I can use it in a laptop. The drive is not installed anywhere. What utility should I use and how should I connect it to another PC that is functioning so I can test it. The drive is a Hitachi drive.

A:Need to test Hard drive

If you don't have one already, get an external HDD dock with a connection appropriate for the PC you want to connect to (such as USB 3.0, USB 2.0, or eSATA), plug in the drive, then try to see it on the PC you are using. You may need to format it if it hasn't been already (you didn't state if the drive is new or used). Once you can see the drive, use a program like Speccy (the free version will work quite well) to check the drive condition.

Depends on the make/model of your drive. Western Digital has an excellent little utility to check THEIR drives. Do you know what kind of drive you have? You may need to open the computer and have a look on the drive. Then go to the drive's manufacture's web site and see if anything is offered.

How to test a laptop hard drive

I am trying to upgrade my older laptop hard drive but my comp doesn't seem to recognize that it is there. Could this be because: 1) It is a bad drive 2) the ide connector is not compatible (shouldn't any ide connector work?) 3)the drive is not compatible with my laptop 4) some other reason.

The hard drive is a IBM Travelstar 4.78 G
The laptop is a Micron Trek Transport II

Is there a way to test the drive in the laptop? I'm guessing not if the laptop can't even detect it. Does that mean the comp isn't even reading it, or it could be bad? Ugh.

I recently formatted my c drive and now i am reinstalling all the software. I keep all the setups of software in my external hard drive. For installing the software I coy the setup folder of the required software on my laptop, then install it.

Is straightaway installing the software by accessing the external hard drive okay? Does it make any difference in the installation time or any reduction in life of hard disk performance.

Or should I always install through my laptop hard drive?

I am running windows 8.1 pro

I need an external hard drive for taking regular backups of all of my data.
When i searched the internet I got two options:
1. Porable HDD [high cost, slower speed but don't need external power]
2. Desktop HDD [low cost, higher speed but need external power]

I want to know that...
1. Which hard disk's live longer? Porable or Desktop.
2. I heared that pulling off USB cable of Portable HDD may cause data lose because it also supplies power to hdd.
What will happpen if Power goes off from Desktop HDD? Will my data/Hard disk remain protected?
3. Level of safety of data on moving or shaking on both Desktop and Portable HDD.
4. Can we install os and boot from portable and desktop external hdd?

A:Need Advice : External Desktop Hard drive vs Portable Hard drive?

Unless you really need to go portable with a Laptop .. I'd not use a USB powered External.
You cannot boot from a USB External .. But there's another option if you're capable of physically changing HDDs ..

Get a good external Enclosure (with a fan for cooling) .. Install a good HDD ... with a 5 year warranty
and make the HDD in the enclosure a bootable backup .. where you could swap HDDs if/when needed ..

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

I was given an old Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop this past August. It was a company laptop and so I didn't expect much but after cleaning up the system, adding RAM, etc., it has been running quite well.

Yesterday I ran a harddrive diagnostics by utilizing Seagate Tools for a routine maintenance session.

1. It passed both the S.M.A.R.T and the Short DST tests twice.

2. It failed the Long DST test twice.

So I want to clone one external 2TB with another. So one drive is the main use one and another the backup one. So I copy everything over to backup and i store the backup at another house and then I start using the main: deleting and adding/editing files. What is the best software or whatever to allow me, after some time, synchronize/clone the externals again without deleting all on the backup drive and recopying? (main to backup) and make them clones again? ..Adding and deleting or replacing any nonidentical files.. Like where i can press a button on some software and it do the work for me.
Sorry if this is confusing

A:Best external to external hard drive synchronized backup plan?

There's a bunch of applications that can do that.

They all work pretty much the same way, but would differ in how easy they are to understand and configure---the interfaces would differ and the help files would differ.

I use FreeFileSync from sourceforge.net.

Others are Syncback, Folder Clone, Karen's Replicator, FBackup, Second Copy, and Synchromagic.

You should be able to configure them to do one or the other of the following:

1: If you delete or modify a file on the "original", it will also be deleted or modified on the backup.

2: If you delete a file on the "original", it will be retained on the backup. If you modify a file, both the modified and unmodified file will be retained on the backup.

It's up to you which choice you prefer. I use the first method, which is often called "mirroring"--one drive is an exact match of the other.

My computer was working fine, it turned off fine. Later when I turned it back on it wouldn't go past the black windows logo screen with the loading bar. Then every time I turned it on I got the improper shut down screen. None of the safe mode or configuration options would run. I tried all the boot options and none would work. Tried using start up disks and couldn't get repair or anything to work. Got a message that windows couldn't find mass storage device and HDD test had read failure. Everything pointed to a bad drive. For the heck of it I tried windows reinstall and it worked, even tho I lost my info. So I don't understand why a working drive would suddenly become inoperable when it's really not. What would do this? Don't want it to happen again

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

The issue described in this post does not affect the operating system, but more to do with a software issue. Therefore, I apologise if this thread would have been better placed in another section of the forum.

A friend informed me that he ran 'Barts Stuff Test 5' to check is his hard drive for errors, after noticing an error message upon startup stating an a hard drive failure is imminent and now has a virtually full hard drive.

To the best of my knowledge this is caused by the manual allocation of the stress test being set at 3% (those who are familar with this program will understand what I mean by this). However, he did not create an restore points and now wishes to undo this.

Are you aware of any way to do so? - In order to clear space on the hard drive?

A:Can external hard drive be used for full internal hard drive?

If you want to take out the drive from external hard drive case and install it in your desktop/laptop, then usually you can. Usually external hard drives are just ordinary hard drives accompanied by some extra controller to make it able to "talk" via general ports (e.g. USB). However I am not familiar with digital elements 2TB , so I can not confirm it. But I do have WD external drive, which I had positively confirm that its real drive is just ordinary hard drive.

Note that if you decide to do this, I suggest to find experience people to work on extracting the drive. If you do it yourself you will risk to damage it, and you don't want that since usually opening the closure means voiding the warranty.

A description of System Image Backup can be found here.  If you want both C and D, I would suggest a clone program. Both Seagate and WD offer a free Disk Wizard Program. With the cloning process, you use an external case to perform the clone.  When disaster strikes, you swap out the drives, and continue. Personally, I make clones of my primary desktops every 30-45 days.

Hi, for nearly a year now I've been using a Buffalo 500GB external hard drive.
Just yesterday though, after unplugging it from my PC, using it on another Windows 7 machine and then attempting to reconnect it the my PC, it began to show up on My Computer as a Local Disk rather than an external. In addition, when I try to access it, it gives me this message: E:\ is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. My question is, is there any way to return the drive to it's original state or recover the data inside? The data is of extreme importance.
Thanks for any help.

I am unsure about what happens after you convert your internal hard drive to an external hard drive... Let's say the internal HDD was your only laptop HDD and you replaced it with a SSD. If you convert your old internal HDD to an external HDD, what would happen when you open it up on your newly installed OS (on the SSD)?

I am trying to download a new OS but us my old internal HDD as an external drive just to access specific files. However, I don't want any other data/programs/settings/etc. downloaded onto my new SSD. Do I need to delete my old OS when I convert my old internal HDD into an external HDD or does the OS simply get "reduced" to a bunch of files that I will see on my newly installed OS?

If anyone is able to clarify these questions that would be fantastic!

I have an internal hard disk not in use ,and I would like to make it as external disk !
I looked on the net and I found I should have the " encelsure " butt I think I wont find it here in my city .
So is there another way ? like usb -esata cable ?

A:how to make your internal hard drive into and external hard drive ?

Firstly, where are you based (Which country)? I would get the part of the internet, I trust we are talking about a 3.5" drive? Do you have an esata port on your pc? I would get something similar to this, I think: Play.com - Buy CiT 35M17SEF 3.5 inch SATA / USB / Firewire / eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure online at Play.com and read reviews. Hi guys I'm new on any sort of Drive an Internal like External acting Hard Hard Drive forums so go easy if it's a stupid question but here goes Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch he did the building - i did the watching To cut a long story short - I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK It's a Samsung TB drive I also have a Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on My storage disk the TB disk is for all my music films etc Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly When I had Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive a laptop I had external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them Does anyone know how I can get the Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive internal drive to stop acting like an external drive Any help would be greatly appreciated

A:Internal Hard Drive acting like an External Hard Drive

This is the way it works. I have an 80GB SSD and an internal HDD and the same happens if the file/folder is large enough. If you just copy a few MBs, you will not see the window with the green stripe running. But if e.g. you copy 500MBs, you will see it. It physically moves the data. That is different if you copy on the same volume from one folder to another. Then it only makes an entry in the MFT.

This problem started with a bad driver file from my printer. I was able to get my desktop to work, but it has crashed my laptop.

I have been trying to reinstall operating system (XP) on my Compaq Presario V2000. I deleted the partition and did the slower version of the formatting the partition. It game back with an error message that there was a partmgr.sys driver error. It suggested to disable the BIOS memory options by starting up in safe mode. I had no idea how to do that, but when I was there ran the hard drive self test and came up with test error #1 - 07 fail. I also reloaded the setup defaults for the PhoenixBIOS.

How do I fix this problem (the self-test and ultimately getting my computer to accept the reinstall)?

Thanks!

A:Hard Drive Self Test Error #1 - 07 Fail & Reinstalling Windows XP

To fix the self test you need to replace the hard drive. That's the whole point of a self test, if it fails it means your drive is bad.

I did a diagnostic tool to see what is wrong with my computer. It was hard drive/motherboard with error code
BIOHD-8, and then i did a hard drive scan. Does it show the results? And i have to try to fix the files and it is stuck verifying file data at 11% stage 4 of 5. Does it take a long time for that part?

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

A couple days ago, I noticed that my laptop was not yet rated with the windows experience index, so I plugged the laptop in to ac power, set the power plan to High Performance, and ran the rating. However, it failed at 99% complete with a weird hard drive read error. I've attached a couple of pictures of me re-running the test again, with the same result:

During test:

Error message:

A:Windows Experience Index Rating fails on 99% during Hard drive test

Is it connected to the internet?

WEI needs to be online in order to do the rating.

You can also try to clear all scores and rerate the system under advanced tools under performance information and tools.

EDIT:

Looking closer at the screenshot, you might want to run a Disk Check

Gday I have Hard & Paragon Hard External Disk Suite Manager Drive USB emailed Paragon and am awaiting there reply but you guys seem to know a lot more and try and solve the problem Up to this point I have used either Acronis or Paragon for my backups I prefer Paragon over Acronis mainly because the restore by Paragon is far quicker I have both bootable CD's but in this instance I would like to concentrate on Paragon I downloaded Paragon's Advanced Recovery CD Build Put it in my rom and booted looked at a black screen for minutes Removed it and rebooted it got stuck at the loading of Vista then I got another black screen no hard drive movement Rebooted again this time with the regular Paragon bootable CD It booted into the recovery console Now this is where things go from bad to worse I tried finding my OS after a lengthy period I received an error disk i o fault no operating system found Now disk is my external hard drive where my backups are kept So I rebooted with the CD in went into the recovery console and clicked on quot safe restore quot after playing the waiting game I get a message disk i o fault Took out the Paragon CD put in the Vista one tried a repair but there was no OS to repair So I installed Vista and because I didn't want to have to reinstall all of my programs again yer lazy I know but that's what backup's are for Checked with the fresh install that my two external hard drives had there drivers and were present They were both accounted for in Vista So put back in the Paragon bootable CD got to the recovery console tried a quot normal restore quot and once again got disk i o fault So I tried a quot safe restore quot same error message Back tracked to see if my OS was still there and IT HAD GONE So again I installed Vista checked with the fresh install that my two external hard drives had there drivers and were present They were both accounted for in Vista Put back in the Paragon bootable CD got to the recovery console tried a quot safe restore quot and once again got disk i o fault Back tracked to see if my OS was still there and IT HAD GONE AGAIN So yet again I installed Vista this time I tried copying over the latest backup to a partition that the Paragon recovery console could read Tried again and yup you guessed it lost the OS again this time the error message was disk i o fault Once again I installed Vista this time however I installed the Paragon software initially it wouldn't find my backups but I was like a dog with a bone and eventually got Paragon Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite & USB External Hard Drive to locate them This time I tried a restore from the Windows environment crossed my fingers my eyes and my legs eventually Paragon said it needed to reboot to continue the operation I rebooted and the recovery looked promising but I could not sit there and watch it waiting for it to fail so I went and watched the TV for a couple of hours I came back to my PC and OMG shock horror EVERYTHING WAS BACK Now for the question I have used the recovery console before and it found my USB external hard drives why this time could it not Footnote I also tried my Acronis bootable CD it loaded then the screen went black I have since done a backup to my external just to make sure it was still viable it worked without a hitch I also did a backup on a partition that is on a different hard drive to my OS just in case I run into this problem again Whether or not it will be read is a whole different story

It should have about 465GB, what are you seeing?

You will not have 500GB due to the conversion between binary and decimal for reporting sizes.

On some Toshiba's I've worked on, including my own Tecra, I press Escape and Function 1 to get a boot menu and with an XP CD in, there's a three second only window in which to "press any key" when the prompt appears. Are you seeing that prompt when you boot from CD? You might also benefit from formatting that hard disk in the other machine if you already started to install on it.

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

@doylemcpoyle903? To see if you can recover your data you will need a SATA to USB connector.  Then remove and connect the HDD to this cable. Go to any other computer and connect it to the USB port. Then copy and past what you need. If the HDD is not damaged to bad you should be able to remove your data. REO

Hello all competent techs Let me preface this problem with my willingness to pay a reasonable fee for a solution or for consultation resulting in a successful solution If someone solves my problem publicly in this forum I promise that I will find a way to STILL provide that person a cash bounty reward and or some free hardware as a thank-you I may also be interested in paying for consultation on an alternative implementation if it s simply not possible to do what I want using the method and + issues Hardware/software hard system test/wipe w/ drive setup REWARD! setup I m attempting However time is of the Hardware/software issues w/ hard drive test/wipe system setup + REWARD! essence I m the owner of a young generation Y eBay company out of Manchester New Hampshire Among other things we sell consumer electronics and computer components but we specialize in hard disk storage Specifically we re processing more than hard drives through our facility each month although we are still quite a small business by many distinctions Accordingly we are looking for a free or very very low-cost but effective solution to our hard drive processing testing wiping needs I am in the process of building a hard drive testing wiping station I have decided to use multiple retail out of the box motherboards attached to a KVM to switch between boards since I can use them in my business if the testing station project fails as currently designed The MAIN GOAL is to test wipe up to hard drives at once using a total of motherboards Other project goals include Required Evaluation of S M A R T drive data for health performance and or very-extensive read write testing Required At least minimal drive-format demonstration Hardware/software issues w/ hard drive test/wipe system setup + REWARD! Required Interoperability for quot quot quot ATA SATA SCSI SAS Gbps Gbps Gbps hard drive conditions USB support optional Required Simultaneous or queued drive testing and or wiping for at least drives per motherboard Optional drive testing wiping reports preferred but not required Optional drive hot-swap testing wiping preferred but not required Optional multiple current security-depth testing wiping standards methods preferred but not required Optional OS-independent software execution preferred but not required Required Free or fixed-cost software to accomplish said goals I recently stumbled upon DBAN for hard drive wiping as I was researching a custom build for a more-formidable hard drive wiping procedure than our current method of manual Windows OS-based S M A R T health performance benchmarking and quick-format in Disk Management DBAN fulfills most if not all of the requirements for this project However as I will describe I am having trouble getting DBAN Beta to wipe multiple IDE SATA hard disk drives as specified in its feature list on the DBAN org website and other sources To preface the project work and research I ve done insofar I ve spent conservatively more than hours on this project including hardware research hardware purchasing hardware assembly software research software sampling software comparison and software testing I ve tested and compared more than hard drive wiping programs including Active Killdisk Suite AC Forensics Multi-Wipe Blancco CMRR HDDerase DBAN DRE Hard Disk Eraser Heidi Eraser HDDGURU Disk Wipe Tool HD Sentinel MiniTool Partition Wizard Miray HD Shredder Jetico BCWipe Paragon Disk Wiper White Canyon WipeDrive Of these software options both paid and free I preferred DBAN with a few close-seconds due to its simple but feature-rich user interface length of time in the market cost free software type open source record of reliability ability to auto-wipe OS independence and claim for simultaneous hard drive wiping capability see FAQ With that said here is my issue I ve had to spend about hours so far troubleshooting DBAN Beta and trying to get it to register wipe multiple hard drives This has included hands-on troubleshooting DBAN-s... Hi,
My old lap top crashed so I took out the hard drive and put it in an external usb case. I would like to delete everything off of it from my old computer and have a clean hard drive but am not sure how to go about doing this. Is it ok to just simply delete everything? Or is there a process I need to go through? I have tried searching this on google and can't find much helpful information. Any help would be great thanks

A:Turning old hard drive into external hard drive

if you want to wipe everything then right click on the drive and format it. it may tell you to format it when you plug it in but if not then to wipe everything right click on the drive and format it. it should show under the hard drives list

When i try to backup my files using windows 7 backup function i get an error message at the very end, usually an hour or more, that says the backup yo my external hard drive was unsuccessful because a file on the C drive could not be found? I've tried for the past 2 weeks and the same thing happens over and over again.

A:backup of hard drive to external hard drive

With a lot of external hard drives, they are unfortunately formatted as FAT32 for compatibility with other OS's and systems. FAT32 cannot handle a single file over 4GB

I'm looking into purchasing a hard drive enclosure/external hard drive...

What's the difference? I have three spare hard drives here; two are clearly marked IDE; and another one that looks like it's probably IDE. But in the stores they have 2.5inch and 3.5inch. what's the difference?

I measured one of the drives, and the "front" side of it is like 4 inches...or is the 2.5/3.5 the diameter of the physical "disk" inside of the enclosure?

Hi I have Windows XP Last week my internal hard drive had a mechanical failure and had to be replaced I have a Memorex aka Imation external hard drive that I used to back up my files The first back up I ever did was a full back up of all programs and files and since then I have backed up incrementally Once my new hard drive was installed and operating system etc restored I plugged in my external hard drive drive from hard Restore hard external drive and tried to restore my files I started with the folder from my first back up and clicked Quick Restore I followed the instructions and it appeared to be restoring my files but at the end of the process there was no visible difference I tried restarting my computer but again no change to the hard drive content My external hard drive came with a brochure but it only talks about how to back up files not how to restore them What am I doing wrong Cheers Bec nbsp

I have a Samsung s2 1tb external hard drive.

Today when I hooked it up to my laptop it would not load. It will shows local F drive when it usually will say samsung Drive.

A pop up box will then appear stating "you need to format drive"

I know if I reformat it I will lose all my data which I will not do.

When I look in device manager it states that the external hard drive is installed.

I attempted to go through start menu and type cmd then F: and it states "The volume does not recognize this system file. Please make sure all required system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

PLEASE HELP I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY FILES

A:Samsung s2 external hard drive not loading showing local disk F drive

With the external drive connected, Go to Disk Management (Start > type: "computer" > click on Computer Management > click on Disk Management)

Determine which disk is the external drive.
If the external drive shows here as a healthy volume, Right click on the large box to the right of the "Disk 1" / "Disk 2" lable and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

If there is nothing but a grey box or "Unallocated Space" next to the disk number then Right click on the disk number (the box) and choose: Change Drive Letter and Path.

Change the drive letter to anything else > OK.

If you can't do any of the above post back. If you can post a screen shot of the Disk Management window that can help.
Do not initialize the disk or format it or you will lose your data.

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on had it change Hard Drive back - Letter - to External Drive unable changed for years I upgraded from Vista Home to amp Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage Through all these upgrades my ext drive ran fine Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB this was External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back drive put into a new case now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext hard drive which is labelled F I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks If there is no easy way then how do I stop program updates for Adobe etc failing because they can not find the F drive I don't know why they look at that drive anyway Help

A:External Hard Drive - Drive Letter changed - unable to change back

Hi PAMDILL,

Welcome aboard.

Try this:

Download drivecleanup.zip V 0.8.1 from

Drive Tools for Windows

Unzip to a folder. In it you will have two folders Win32 and x64, each containing DriveCleanup.exe for Windows 32bit and 64 bit respectively.

Now unplug all the USB devices from your PC (except of course the Keyboard and mouse), right click on the appropriate DriveCleanup.exe for your system and run it as an administrator.

This will remove all non-present drives from the registry.

Reboot and then plug-in your external drive.

The drive will be installed and hopefully you should be able to assign any free drive letter to it.

Please report whether it resolved your problem.
