I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've tried just about between screen Screen apps/desktop/start steps in fades everything but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action The Screen fades in steps between apps/desktop/start screen screen on my laptop Sony Flip A intel geforce seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens It's rather annoying not just because of the change but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service and all effects fade in UAC etc have been turned off A video of the condition is shown below edit vimeo was taking forever to process It even happen when no programs are opening closing - for example if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background the brightness shifts I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop Has anyone seen this effect and if so is there some registry key somewhere that is needed to fix it TIA

I know you have turned off adaptive brightness and it's sensor...but that looks to me like it's actually still running in the hardware.

I recently had to refresh my laptop which meant re-upgrading from 8.0 to 8.1 with all the updates involved. Everything seemed to be working fine then I was prompted to do an update for NVidia GeForce Experience. I don't know if that's what caused the following issue or not but now when I go to the Start screen and click the arrow down to see my apps - the apps overlap the start screen making it impossible to see anything. It's as though the start screen isn't moving up when the apps appear and so I see both screens at the same time. Any ideas on what is causing this and how I might fix it? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok...seems I still had more updates to go (I guess 219 weren't enough lol). Have restarted and all seems good now. Very weird... (I miss XP!)

Should be simple, right? Then, this is Windows 8...

A:How to Rename Start Screen Apps?

I'm pretty sure it has less to do with the fact that "this is Windows 8" and more to do with it being an App. My guess is that the App name is part of the signature id and tied into the Store for security reasons. It's not like you can rename Apps on your smartphone. Well probably could with Android but I'm sure you would need to root the phone in order to do it.

i have recently upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, the start screen apps/buttons are not working, they have never worked, when i click on one it just pops up for 1 second and comes back out, it refuses to load them, i have looked online and tried editing my resolution or whatever people have said to do, but none of it seems to work, what do i do?

A:Start screen apps not working

There are some things to check initially - UAC must be enabled, the Windows Firewall Service must be running, and you must not be logged on with the built-in Administrator account. You want to make sure all of the above is set before doing any other tshooting.

A:Can no longer pin apps to start screen

If you are not using the Classic Shell go to Search, right click on the application you want.   A menu will open at the bottom of the page, one of the choices there is to pin to task bar.
If you are using the Classic Shell click on Start and right click on the application you want and choose to pin it to the task bar.

Everything was find a couple of days ago, but now the default apps don't show on the Start screen. They show up as installed but are not on the Start screen.

I have installed several programs ( i.e. Adobe Reader, Firefox, etc.) and made them the default programs for certain file types. Does this affect what is displayed on the Start screen (Firefox and not IE, iTunes and not Music)?

This still would not explain why other installed apps are not being displayed, i.e. People.

go to apps store, right click on screen and then click "your apps", see your options, maybe something there might help you.

Been using WIndows 8 for over a month now, and since I have Start8, I can honeslty say, I never really use any of the metro apps. I've downloaded a few (ie netflix, Cnet) but at the end of the day, just find it easier to open google chrome, and go to the website. What are others opinions on the apps and your usage?

A:DO most of you use the Start screen Metro Apps?

Nope I barely use them at all. I used them a couple of times when I first installed windows 8, but then they were too buggy (sometimes wouldn't open at all, crashed all the time), and their interfaces were just weird and too different. I'm a fan of metro, I switched back to 7 just yesterday to get ready for 8. I actually miss the speed of 8, and I used metro as a quick launch screen. But metro apps are awkward.

I'm trying to set up the cleanest interface I possibly can on my Windows 8.1 PC, and I've spent a lot of time cleaning up my Apps folder so that only useful things are displayed, and they're in an order that's helpful to me.

I'm now trying to set up my Start Screen, and there are some things I'd like to pin to it (the My Documents folder, various websites, etc) that I don't think of as applications and don't want to see in the Apps folder. However, anything I pin to Start shows up in Apps as well. Is it possible to pin something to the Start Screen but not have it show up in Apps? I'm okay with using registry tweaks or 3rd party software to do this!

A:How can I pin a program to the Start Screen, but not Apps?

Everything installed on the PC shows up on the Apps screen. It used to be called "All Apps". You then pick and chose from that list what's pined to the Start Screen. They aren't moved from one to the other, they are duplicated. If you start removing things from the Apps screen it more than likely will disappear from the Start Screen too. If that happens you'll have no easy way to launch that program. I'm not saying don't do it, just don't be surprised if you break something in the process.

A:Icons on Start But Not Apps Screen ?

Hello Emperor,

Sure, you can. Anything that you "Pin to Start" from another location will not be added to the Apps screen. It only pins to the Start screen.

If you like, you can add and remove items from the Apps screen though. Be sure to read the warning in the tutorial below though.

Can anyone tell me why Microsoft pushed these Store Apps out and then screwed them up? I have some installed which work fine, but when trying to install others - they won't open. Suggestions from corrupted user account to sync problems to etc to etc are being offered by Microsoft but there seems to be no solid explanation. This along with the real mess up on Update 1 for many users make me wonder who is in control of Windows. I have, in the past, been a defender of Microsoft, but I am rapidly changing my mind. Shouldn't they think of their users? Or is it that they just don't have to?

When I was on Windows 8 I could install an app from the store and it would automatically put a tile for it on the start screen. After upgrading to 8.1 it stopped doing that. Now after I install an app I have to search for it and right click and tell it to pin to the start. Is there any way to have a tile automatically put on the start screen after install with 8.1?

A:8.1 installed apps missing from start screen

I don't think so, they go on the "All Apps" screen by default. I actually like it that way, less clutter and I only have what I actually want on the main Start Screen.

This is becoming INCREDIBLY Frustrating - I have been downloading Apps from the "store" and everytime I install a new one, it never shows up on the actual start screen. When I search for the app, click it and choose "Pin", it still does NOT show up on the Start screen.

How frustrating - can't seem to find anything online that helps me resolve this. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a setting somewhere that locks what can/cant be added to the start screen?

A:Original Start Screen Metro Apps Kaput

Problem Solved: Backed up all files to external drive since I didn't yet know where I would end up in fixing things. Created new local admin user temporary account. The apps worked. Restarted every time I created or deleted an admin account. Copied everything to the new account. Deleted original local adm account, including user folder in C: > Users (had to take ownership). Created new local admin user account with same name as my original one. Copied everything over. Deleted the temporary account. Tested the apps again. Made new System Image Backup (see sig). Did a little personalization. All is good.

I am glad I didn't have to use prior system image backups in solving my problem. Not sure how far I would have had to go back to get to where the apps were working properly--since I almost never use the apps. Incidentally, system restore was not an option for me. For some reason, even when my Win8 machine was new, maybe 5-6 years ago, it has never been able to do system restores consistently. Have tried them under Win8 after new partition set up/clean non-upgrade install for Win8--using disc mentioned in prior post.

My only disappointment, if you can call it that, is that I didn't need to try an "old-fashion" repair install using my disc mentioned in prior post. It should be equivalent to a system builder disc I think. I've been wondering for a long time if either of these disc types can be used to do old-fashion" repair installs." Maybe someday I'll get lucky enough to have to try one.

I have no idea what is going on with my computer but if someone could please help, I would appreciate it more than you know! Anyway, I left on vacation last week, and un-plugged my computer. I returned today and have been trying to get on it all day with no avail. (I am on it right now in safe mode+networking) Everytime I start it up it gets to the welcome/login screen and the screen is all shakey and flickering I can barely make out what anything is...I got lucky once and clicked on a login name and once logged in it did the same thing just all messed up - i cannot see anything. I tried a system restore but only had two available dates and niether worked...Can someone please tell me what to do!! :) Thanks in advance!

A:Screen Shake, Blink, Flicker...

Taking a complete stab in the dark, I'd try to update the driver for your graphics card from safe mode. Safe mode uses a different driver to the one used during normal boots, so that points to a software rather than hardware issue and probably explains why safe mode fixes the problem. Perhaps. Maybe.

I recently started having an issue with firefox While it's open screen causes Firefox to [SOLVED] blink and i move my cursor to the top of the screen it'll start to blink If I remove my cursor quickly it freezes the computer for a few seconds and if I leave it there it will finally go blank and shuts down all apps and send my PC back to the log-in screen I have a password on my PC If I move my cursor to the right left or bottom nothing happens the computer seems fine I am currently using chrome with no issues and I tried removing and re-installing FireFox and I get the same issues It seems to have effected other windows programs now when ever i maximize the app and i put the cursor near the op to minimize or close the app I get the same blinking results and if left there to long it resets back to the log-in screen It only seems to effect windows programs and apps rd party apps adobe chrome etc seem to be fine

A:[SOLVED] Firefox causes screen to blink

If it's affecting other programs as well as Firefox, it could be a Windows problem. Try running sfc /scannow as admin with your Windows disc inserted to fix any corrupt or missing system files, then reboot and test.

A:Help Asus x450JN my screen blink randomly

When it does blink, does it go black then back to normal screen ? Now it could be failing hardware, bad connection from hinge to monitor and even possible interference. Also could be the Video adapter drivers are corrupted.

This is the laptop ?

I believe from specs shown here it has a NVIDIA Geforce 840M, if you can double check that, go to the Control panel then the Device manager, go to Display adapter left click it, it should tell you there the model.

If it is correct NVIDIA, first thing i would do is uninstall older drivers, either go back to Control Panel in Programs and Features do it there, but first download the latest drivers here NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce Game Ready Driver WHQL

After uninstall reboot and install one you downloaded, see first if this helps the blinking.

A:Sudden graphic artifacts, now unable to start windows

When issues such as artifacting suddenly appear, it usually points to a GPU failure. Something else that comes to mind is a PSU failure since it may not be able to supply enough power to the components, hence causing these issues.

I recently ripped the analogue screen cord out of my tower when the computer and screen were still running. Upon next start-up bad screen artefacts and screen flickering occurred. I have investigated heat issues, but I don't think that's the problem as it occurs form start-up. It sometimes goes away then comes straight back again as soon as I move the mouse. I also have the latest driver and catalyst control centre installed. Will I need a new video card?. If anyone has any idea on what I can do to fix this problem it would be great.

edit: I managed to get into Safe Mode by turning off the computer with Windows 7 running and then restarting. I did not see any artifacts. I rolled back to the previous driver and the artifacts are still there. It might be my video card.

Two days ago small dots and lines were appearing on my screen. I swapped my LCD monitor with another CRT monitor and they both share the problem, so i doubt it is the monitor.

Today when i turned on my computer i had much thicker and longer lines/artifacts that go down the length of the screen. When I open a game such as WoW, the artifacts get much more frequent and violent.

Ive tried changing resolution, refresh rates, drivers, reinstalling DX9, opening and cleaning my computer, reinserting video card with a different power cable, disabling fastwrite in display properties....

Im running out of things to do! Its a unusual problem because ive had this computer since last November and this is the first time these artifacts/lines are appearing. They appear even in the BIOS and windows loading screen, although its not as severe.

Please help!

Sorry to hear that. Please refer to the Blank Screen LED Error Codes document from HP Support. It sounds like a "General system board failure." The explanation says to contact HP for assistance. The motherboard might need to be replaced, and you will probably require the assistance of a technician to fix the problem.

It could be something as simple as a faulty driver, or it could be that the actual card or even the Power Supply is starting to fail (hence the spoaradic shutdowns and artifacts).

The best place to start is to have someone to look at BSOD chrash dumps:

Navigate to C:\Windows\minidump and zip the contents of that folder.

Create a new thread and upload the .zip file in the Crashes and Debugging - Windows 7 Forums section.

If it's a driver issue, then the crash dumps will tend to consistently point towards the same file. If the results are varied and inconsistent, that generally suggests that a component is failing.

Another way to attempt to rule out driver vs hardware is to check for artifacts during the machines startup (BIOS / POST) and/or running in safe mode.

If there are visible artifacts, restarts etc during POST or in Safe Mode, then it's hardware.

The big problem with a laptop with a high end gfx card is heat. Even with the GS, which is a mobile version of the 7900, it still gets toasty. There really could several things that went out. Overheating could of ended the life of the GPU. You could also have a problem with the actual physical connection to the screen.

I am not familiar with dell laptops and if they use MXM cards or not. But I'm almost sure they do not. MXM is a format that has been kind of accepted that allow you to actually take out a mobile GPU and replace it. If the laptop does not support MXM, and the GPU is indeed what failed, you are in a bit of a hard place.

Hello I'm new here so if there's anything I forgot to include in the post feel free to let me know I've been having an issue with my screen for the past few months Sometimes when the screen turns on whether it When On Artifacts Graphics Screen Turns be from start-up or out from sleep mode the screen will tend to do one Graphics Artifacts When Screen Turns On of three things Be covered in small vertical lines that appear to be only in one region of the screen usually the center which seem to disappear a Graphics Artifacts When Screen Turns On few minutes after logging in Be covered in small vertical lines on the entire screen that never go away Display a gray screen In the case of this has only ever occured after coming out of sleep mode The corners of the screen will be dark I've noticed the upper right corner tends to be a dark blue and whatever was on the screen before the computer went into sleep mode will appear constantly on the screen When this happened to me the second time a paused YouTube video was on the screen last After the screen turned on after it had been in sleep mode for a little bit when I scrolled down switched tabs displayed the desktop logged off and shut down the a ghost-like transparent image of what had been on the screen before appeared including the browser taskbar etc Even after shutting down as soon as I powered back on the laptop it was still there I immediately shut back down after reaching the log-in screen and left it for a few hours when I came back the image was gone on start-up but was occuring In the case of this has occured both out of sleep mode and at start-up Different screens will appear with varying hues of gray and different 'patterns' on them One of the first I found was a light gray screen with what looked like water droplets all over it The top was a very light gray and got darker as it went down like a gradient It seemed to brighten over time Another one was a more charcoal color with somewhat thick vertical white stripes on it unevenly placed There were also thin screen stripes When I hit the Windows button on my keyboard to bring up the start menu the screen lit up in the region where the start menu would appear Additonally when it once appeared during start-up when the Windows logo would typically appear during the process the center of the screen began to brighten where it should be The one I've been getting lately has simply been a dark charcoal color and does not light up at all I had been able to get it to disappear completely by logging out and logging back in using shortcut keys but this hasn't worked for When any of these things happened I have not observed any common program application open or any overheating and it happens whether it is plugged into the power source or not I apologize if this all sounds confusing - it's rather difficult to try to explain these things I have pictures of and but they were taken with my cell phone and will be of poor quality I would be glad to provide them if needed to clarify things Initially when the problem first presented itself I immediately updated my video card and chipset drivers This did not work I later took my laptop to a computer repair shop and the technician there said he could not get the computer to re-create the problem no matter what he did He also updated Windows removed some minor Malware and updated some drivers he only mentioned the video card One day after recieving the laptop back from the shop the problem began again and has been occuring ever since It does not occur in any pattern and is sporadic - sometimes it occurs others it will not and it is impossible to predict which type of screen will appear I am at the end of my rope here Any assistance will be appreciated SYSTEM SPECS OS Windows Home Premium Service Pack -bit Computer Alienware laptop RAM GB CPU Intel Core i - MQ GHz Video NVIDIA GeForce GTX M MB I apologize if I left out anything important Thank you for your time and consideration

A:HP 15-d054ee Notebook black screen 2 caps blink code error ....

two blinks is corrupt BIOS. Connect the power adapter to the notebook and the hold down the Windows key and the B key at the same time. It may take a full minute or so of holding down the two keys, but you should  see an onscreen message responce that says that it is recovering the BIOS.

My wife has a nice new VAIO laptop. We connect it to a Samsung TV with an HDMI cable.
Initially there were video artifacts on the TV screen, but after some fiddling they seemed to go away.
Today they have returned. I have tried another HDMI cable and it didn't help.

The artifacts are only on the TV screen and not on the laptop display.
They cannot be captured with a screenshot (I just tried this and am posting from my computer).

The web search picture (HDMI.jpg) shows small vertical lines in a row after some of the text.
Sort of like this: | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
but less than ? the height of these lines.
There is also a set of the lines that follows the mouse cursor around.

The VAIO desktop picture (HDMI2.jpg) shows "sparkles" around the VAIO name and spreading to the left where it takes up the entire side of the screen.

Any ideas/suggestions?

A:Screen artifacts when connecting with HDMI from VAIO

Used the TV and cable from my system on the wife's system and it appears to work fine (no complaints from the wife! :0).
Using the TV and cable from the wife's system on my system and there are some video artifacts.

Going to experiment with another cable (again) and with the different HDMI inputs on the TV
Also going to try another TV on the wife's system (she likes the older TV better).

I just got "Mass Effect" but I can't get through more than five minutes of gameplay before the screen gets covered in garbage and it freezes, needing to be restarted - even on the lowest settings. I'm running it on an nVidia GeForce 8800 GT with all the most recent updates.

According to the Mass Effect summary, my computer's clock speed is 2412 MHz. To my understanding, my card is overheating and I need to underclock my computer to get it working right. However, I don't know what settings to use in the BIOS and messing around with ATITools just crashes my computer even more.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I suggest rolling back the Windows update that happened at the time the issue began. Settings-->Update & Security-->Update History --> check the date on the installed updates and then click on uninstall updates. The next window that opens will give you the option to click on a specific update and uninstall it.

Dear Experts,

When I boot up, there are graphical artifacts when the desktop is displayed. Immediately afterward, the computer will crash and I get the Blue screen. This also happens sometimes when I am playing games such as FIFA09 and MW2. I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers for my graphics cards with no success.

Furthermore, I am able to run my system in Windows Safe mode.

Here are some details of my system. Please let me know if I can provide more information.

Greetings About a month ago I was playing WoW when my computer froze After a few seconds it went to bluescreen and showed the lock as a memdump This happened several times in many different games until eventually colored dots began appearing on the screen and eventually it would just go to a grey and black flashing screen affected only by a hard reboot After going through that several times it eventually just booted up in an incredibly low res and color mode and hardlocked almost immediately after coming into desktop flashing grey and black screen here too I now decide to boot into safe mode and from here System and Screen Artifacts Solved: hardlocks. I can navigate Windows just fine I can even burn cds Sometimes it will boot into my normal resolution x but will immediately hardlock No display adapter is showing as connected Now to this week I start swapping parts Another video card hard drive PSU and motherboard all give the same result I do not have any spare RAM handy and the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool showed no errors Maybe it s a software error Reformat Solved: Screen Artifacts and System hardlocks. time So I put the Windows disc in and reboot like normal It Solved: Screen Artifacts and System hardlocks. won t boot It loads the setup files and then goes straight into the old Windows installation I tried installing in via Windows but it would not allow me to reboot and choose to reformat Instead all I could do was put the old Windows installation into a seperate folder Things are really crappy now The Windows install I did is now asking me for a username and password that it never gave me an option to create and my old username and password do not work Since I cannot log in to reformat through Windows and since Windows will not boot from cd I have no idea what to do now Since I don t have any spare ram I tried downloading Memtest creating a cd iso and booting from it When I do I get quot DISK BOOK FAILURE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER quot I went into the bios and set all the boot priorities to cd-rom and I get the same error I tried a Western Digital HD test the same way with the same results So I am at a loss here I have had this PC for about years now No settings have been changed I blow the dust out of it once ever couple of weeks All fans are working normally and temps are normal My last resort is to take it to a shop because I really don t have the money to rebuild right now Any ideas Thank you Andrew nbsp

My Asus G -JH laptop is currently freezing at the Windows Starting screen I've read a lot of other forum posts that feature the same problem BUT Windows screen, Starting Artifacts freezing of top on there is artifacting bunch of colored dots on the top of this screen that goes across the quot Starting Windows quot screen in a sort of horizontal line Sometimes it just goes straight Artifacts on top of Starting Windows screen, freezing to the quot Windows has failed to startup quot screen None of the System Recovery Options from the Startup Tool seem to help fix the problem they've all been tried Trying to boot in safe mode doesn't work either as after it starts to load the files the artifacting appears on the top again after about the third file and it freezes I have not made ANY major changes to anything on the system for over two months prior Because of the artifacting seen I imagine the video card is fried or malfunctioning I called Asus and all they suggested to me so far was to reformat because apparently they think its a driver issue but I'd like to consider myself fairly tech savvy and believe that there has got to be a better solution that does not involve reformatting the hard drive as I had a lot of important data that had been stored and not backed up the previous night before the unexpected freezing The only things I seem to have access to is BIOS and the Startup Tool I have a System Recovery Disc too and am curious if there is a solution to this problem I am not well versed in BIOS and assuming the video card is shot if there would be a way I can access by data and possibly back it up before reformatting so I can persuade Asus support that my card is in fact shot so I can send it in for a replacement Thanks for any assistance

Your graphics driver atikmdag.sys is blamed for most of your BSODs.

It could do with an update:

See if you can find an update - AMD Graphics Drivers & Software

If updating the driver doesn't work, chances are we have a graphics hardware issue.

Hello Recently my hp pavilion dm with switchable radeon series gpu has started acting funny GPU? Bad Freezing, and screen, black graphic artifacts. It started months ago with poor performance in streaming videos online when the radeon was activated dubbed quot hi performance quot in the Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts. OS Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts. This problem seemed to get better after reinstalling Windows back in March or April and using canned air to clean the innards of dust However about a week ago while Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts. playing a game the screen froze up and the computer rebooted Upon restart I got a message saying the video driver had crashed and was incompatible with the catalyst control center not exactly sure what that is but I installed several different driver versions to no avail The computer continues crashing in this way and often will show bars or a checker pattern on the screen before freezing To make matters worse a good percentage of the time the screen will remain black upon startup I've tried reinstalling the OS and thankfully was able to boot in safe mode and back up all of the files I needed I'm tempted to rule out malware as a cause due to the fact that the problem persists after reinstalling Windows I have used canned air to blow out all the fans and have kept up with that habit pretty well since I started experiencing the slowness in video playback I have not noticed any extreme overheating since I amended the initial problem earlier this year I'm ready to spend a small amount on fixing this but I'm also pretty ready to upgrade to a MacBook Pro or iMac since I have started using Photoshop and a drawing tablet to illustrate digitally I wanted to get a good background knowledge on what to expect before I bring it in to get an official diagnosis Any input is greatly appreciated Thanks Jake

A:Bad GPU? Freezing, black screen, and graphic artifacts.

Since you have done a (clean?) install of W7, that eliminates a lot of common problems. You can certainly stop thinking about viruses.

I have a couple of questions:
Where did you get the video driver(s) for the laptop when you did the reinstall? From the HP website only, or did you use the driver package from ATI? In the early days of dual graphics, the driver package was for both graphics chips and available only from the laptop manufacturer. Using the package from ATI would cause problems.
What happens if you disable the Hi-Performance graphics (in Device Manager)? Yes, your video performance will drop, but does that make the artifacts and freezing stop? This test is to try and isolate the problem graphics chip.
Does this behavior happen only on battery, or when the battery and power supply are both connected? What happens if you run on the power supply only and remove the battery completely?

I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP.

My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked!!

I have done the following to try and resolve these issues.

1. Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates.

2. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue.

3. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses.

4. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues.

This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare.

Would be grateful for any suggestions, solutions, incantations or workarounds for this issue/s

Kind regards

Ok Let me preface this by saying that I'm fairly savvy when it comes to technology I've done my share of reformats had viruses that I've fixed However This issue has me stumped Completely and utterly I was playing EVE online yesterday morning and "Artifacts", boot unable Screen Bizzarre to decided I wanted to see how far my machine could go with forced settings in the Nvidia Control Panel It crashed after a Bizzarre Screen "Artifacts", unable to boot few minutes and I thought 'Well thats the limit I'll turn them down to where they were ' I did everything worked fine and I shut the computer off Last night however I went to boot up the machine and During the initial dell loading screen the BIOS load screen There were wierd color glitches all over the place After this During the Nvidia RAID Bizzarre Screen "Artifacts", unable to boot controller load screen there were DOS charecters occuring at random intervals on the screen interrupting the actual text and these charecters werent normal charecters one looked like the Delta symbol After Windows began to load again with bizarre color glitches I would Bizzarre Screen "Artifacts", unable to boot get a BSOD attributing the error to nvlddmkm sys and it was conducting a physical memory dump It would restart go into system repair wouldn't repair and the loop would continue I COULD get into safe mode however After doing so I tried uninstalling nvidia drivers and again with driver sweeper and reinstalling I would get a dialogue saying that Server Stereo wasn't installed properly Going into DXdiag told me that the machine no longer recognized the graphics card all the fields were blank or listed as N A under the display tab I decided to just go balls out and reformat using the XP disc that came with the computer Again with the DOS charecters which made navigating the windows setup screens a real pain I did them by memory mostly As I went to bed the reformat went and even THAT screen was plagued by these mysterious charecters It looked like a s computer virus on my machine This morning I awoke led the windows installer process through what it needed all the while enduring the color glitches that plagued safe mode I left for work this morning while the Horribly designed Dell Installing Applications window was flashing I'm currently still at work so I can't provide super detailed explanations but I hope someone can get me a prognosis Things on my list to do are Reinstall graphics drivers Reseat the Graphics Cards Reset CMOS Test cards on other machine If anyone's encountered this problem and a solution please please PLEASE tell me It would save me a great deal of stress and chain-smoking

Is it possible you have 'fried' the graphics card?

folks i have apps that i would like to load at start-up on vista home basic they include intel and dell apps winzip adobe and the like zonealarm cyberdefender and verizon vzaccess usb wi-fi for laptop if i go into msconfig disable all the start-up apps' checkboxes re-boot re-enable all the checkboxes re-boot again then all the apps load at start-up with excellent speed but this happens only ONCE if go in again the next day the next hour whatever the disk lite runs for min or so and NOTHING loads at start-up if apps load only at once start-up: start-up i go into msconfig again and repeat the process i just mentioned then it works again but only ONCE and yes if i dbl-clk an app off the screen it loads immediately and all the apps were installed with the option to load at start-up and windows installer service is as well 'automatic' any reason for this behaviour this started happening this week and i can't imagine where to begin to troubleshoot any ideas thanks ron

A:start-up: apps load at start-up only once

Not sure what is happening but unless you want long boot up times I'd would only let essential applications start up at boot time e.g. winzip, adobe etc. and many others are not needed.
As far as services are concerned the following site gives advice on what processes are essential and which need not always be running or start up ? this depends on how you have your PC set up.
Hope this helps to some degree.

its not a constant issue but it happens after a while of use.they flicker all over the screen when i play Zynga games on facebook or watch videos and some me plz is this just an over heating issue or what???

A:strange "artifacts"(lines) on screen

Could be a hardware issue or software. Most likely cause is a driver conflict with the app used for Zynga (likely Flash).

Try updating the video drivers. You could also try updating Flash (or whatever app is used by Zynga).

I have an XP SP3, 3gig ram, 512mb X1950pro, 650wPSU...

I have not turned off my computer for the last week. I have an IP phone so I have to keep my computer up and running.

Well today when I tried to run one of my programs, it doesn't launch. In fact, none of the apps on my desktop launched. I double-click, hour glass appear and disappear. Nothing happens. I do Alt Ctrl Del to see App Process but am not sure what I'm looking at. Nothing starts up.

On top of that, when I either restart or shut down, it doesn't do anything. It sits and sits. Finally, a "End process" comes up and I end it but it still won't restart or shut down.

Any advice would be appreciated.

when I click the window icon on my taskbar, my pc goes straight to apps, not to start.
how do I get my pc to go to start straight away - it used to, then decided to go straight to apps.

A:start not apps!

A left-click on that bottom-left Windows Logo will take you to the Apps

A right-click on it gives you a lot more options ... perhaps that is what you are looking for?
