Preferred Solution: Will upgrading my computer work?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You'll be wanting a major upgrade of CPU, RAM and Graphics if you want to meet the recommended specs for The Witcher.

2GB of RAM on any system seems to be the "sweet spot" for Vista AND XP - any more is just showing off really!!

I'd look at upgrading CPU to at least Athlon x2 5000, 512MB graphics card - at least geforce 8600GT or similar

The Witcher (great game!!) requires (at most and recommended by manufacturer) - Athlon x2 5600, 2GB RAM, 256MB GeForce 7900 GTX/Radeon 1950 Pro or better

So you have the RAM, you need to find out about what connection your mobo has for graphics (PCI-express is standard now), and the processor needs upgrading (although at lowest specs for game - what you have is theoretically fine but may struggle)

Download SIW from here - http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html - click siw with installer. Install that and run it - it will tell you exactly what is in your PC - motherboard type, memory type, etc, etc - I think you can generate a report with this tool - so post that on here and more help will be coming your way!!

Hi. I have a friend with a Dell Dimension 3000. 2.6 Ghz: 512 MB RAM.

He recently installed a copy of Vista Ultimate on his computer. It worked fine the first few times but, yesterday, when he started it, it said:

Primary Drive Not Found
Secondary Drive Not Found

Press F1 to continue, press F2 to run the setup utility

Nothing happens when you press F1. It stays stuck on that screen. Does my friend need to upgrade his memory for Vista to work?

A:Upgrading memory for Vista to work?

If the hard drive is not found, that would be very different from a memory problem.

Since a copy of Vista was recently installed, you might double check that the connections to the hard drive are firmly seated.

Also you may find that Vista will run a little slow on only 512 megs of memory. XP would be ok with that amount but most folks recommend 2 gigs for Vista.

Hey, I am probably going to be buying a GTX 660 to replace my old AMD 6670, but I'm not sure if it will run/fit in my computer.

It is an ADVENT DT2410.

The specs are (if you need more then ask and I'll try and post them):

Windows 8
Intel Core i5-3330
8GB RAM
450W PSU
It can handle an AMD 6670, so it has at least PCI Express, with a x16 lane graphics slot (don't know what that means)
I will add a picture of the inside soon

Here is the amd 6670 website: http://www.amd.com/uk/products/desk...6670/pages/amd-radeon-hd-6670-overview.aspx#3

And here is the GTX 660 website: http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-660/specifications

If you could tell me if my computer meets the requirements then that would be great.

EDIT: I also heard it might not work due to Windows 8 having UEFI which some cards don't support.

My xp system had a blue screen error. Took it to shop, where they first tried to fix it, then had to wipe the system & reinstall. The reinstall included xp service pack 3.

When I got the system home & plugged in my ps2 keyboard, the keyboard didn't work. Had to borrow a usb keyboard. Then I searched forums, but didn't find the answer.

Somehow, while searching for a MS Natural Keyboard driver, I wound up at CNET on this page:

Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard - CNET Download.com

I downloaded the file, rebooted my pc, & the keyboard worked!

Thought this might help some of you who don't want to have to buy a USB keyboard when your ps2 keyboard is still fine.

Good luck!

I got a computer in Dec of 2006. 3 months later a Vista upgrade disk came in the mail. I have had it ever since. I use this computer to store stuff and try new programs ect. I am wondering how much I will regret upgrading with this free disk. The system has a Pentuim 4 3.1 G CPU and only 512MB of RAM. I would really like to put vista on it but....512 MB of ram is not the 1GB they recommend. Is anyone running a system like this? What will happen? Will it just run slow and not have Aero because the graphics are not up to par either or will there be other problems? Thanks for any advice.

A:Thinking of upgrading old XP to Vista. Will it work?

You would have a better time if you got in on the Windows7 Beta. I put it on a similar system except mine had 1 GB ram. But I've seen others with only 1/2 GB say it runs ok. The thing is, the Windows7 Beta is the Ultimate edition. The install is likely to be a lot smarter than Vista Home Premium. I have an AMD dual core 5200 with 2 GB ram and I wouldn't want to run Vista with anything less. Plus Vista tends to run your HD a lot more than XP does. If you want to use Vista I'd suggest getting a PC with at least 2 GB ram that has Vista SP1 already installed. I don't know what your budget is but I see lately at Best Buy you can get a quad core machine with 8 GB ram for $700 and change. (Might be a good excuse to get a new PC)

I have a Dell Optiplex running XP. My buddy just bought a Dell Vostro 3500 laptop (Win 7 ofcourse) that came with a Dell Windows 7 disk.

Since both machines are Dell, can I use his disk to upgrade myself to 7? I mean, would it work or would the OS be asking for a license key? I feel like it would work like a charm but don't wanna go through the whole process unless I'm sure.

Trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I have installed all of the Windows 7 updates, uninstalled my virus scanner, and still it wont upgrade. When I start the upgrade a window pops up that says "please wait", it stays up for less than 2 seconds and disappears, then nothing else happens. I have tried running it as administrator and still nothing.

I have a machine that had windows XP Pro installed; I partitioned the hard drive and installed windows 7. Dual boot worked fine,..either Win 7 or "earlier version of windows (Win XP). My customer installed Windows 10 over win 7. Now dual boot screen shows up but will only boot to 10...XP doesn't work. Help...Cannot go back to Win 7.

A:dual boot won;t work after upgrading to Windows 10

I am not certain, but I think you will find that when Win 10 installed it created an 'Win.old' folder, dumped your Win 7 files in that and merrily proceeded to format and partition the rest of your hard drive to suit itself, hence the reason why XP has gone.

Your customer, or you, should be able to revert to Win 7 should you wish, but I think you will find that XP is permanently gone. Depending on the size of the hard drive and on whether or not your customer still has install discs it may be possible to go back to dual or even triple booting, but I suspect it will mean re-installing Win 7 and/or XP.

Hi
I know. I should've checked the upgrade information before doing so but I upgraded to Windows 8 about 3 months ago and my DVD player and touchscreen no longer work. I'm not sure what else is not working.

I've searched for drivers but can't seem to find any.

Can someone point me to the right direction?

Or should I restore back to the original settings - Windows 7?

Which brings me to my second question. How do I restore? I didn't do a backup, however I have moved all my data off onto a hard drive.

I just can't seem to find any help on either of these challenges.

Thanks in advance.

A:DVD Player & Touchscreen won't work after upgrading DX1210 to Windows 8

To be honest I don?t have this device and don?t have experience with it but I?ve checked Toshiba AU support page and obviously this model is not supported for Win8. What you need are specific Toshiba tools and utilities.

In my opinion if device is not fully supported you should go back to original and supported Win7.
I don?t know why you didn?t follow Toshiba?s advice about recovery media creation. From my experience this saved data are useless and you will not be able to start recovery image installation.

What you need now is recovery disc. Check Toshiba page if there is option to order new one. If not contact nearest Toshiba service and ask if they can help you with this.

Hi, Open windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for HP SimplePass and select Uninstall. When this has completed, restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, download the version of HP SimplePass on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71501-72000/sp71729.exe When the download has completed, open your Downloads folder, right click the SimplePass installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. Again, when this has completed, restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, open windows Control Panel and in the top right, next to View by: select 'Large Icons'.  From the new layout, select the HP SimplePass entry and see if you can set up your fingerprint log-on. Regards, DP-K

basicall, my WHOLE problem is mentioned in my title of the board.

it's actually my mom's problem.

i re-installed windows from scratch to see if that fixed it.

but the modem works FINE in XPHome, but then seems to disable itself in XP Pro.

Dell tech support cna't figure this out.

i don't know what to do with my mom's new PC

she's been running it fine on XP home

but when she upgrades to Pro, all hell breaks loose.

We use a broadband ISP (direcway....ewww i hate it, but it gets the job done when you live in hicksville usa....lol)

but you need to activate it (and activate windows) via a modem..and we use dialup as a backup ISP.

my mom can run fine in Home, but she want's Pro to work.

I am using Windows 7 (Win-7) for several years and am reasonably happy for Win-7.

Microsoft upgraded my Win-7 to Win-10 in overnight without my permission. I declined the upgrade and Microsoft restored Win-7 to my computer. The Win-7 is working fine except Back-up.
The Backup is Win-10's backup, not Win-7 backup. Microsoft Win-7 restoring operation didn't replace Win-10 backup. The Win-10 backup doesn't work under Win-7.
How can I replace the Win-10 backup to Win-7 back-up?

Hello I am having a problem with some websites at my house There are certain websites I cannot access on any of the computers we have at home but I can access them on my Nintendo DS A few of the sites are www torhead com www ebay com www gotmarko com www questionablecontent net Occasionally questionablecontent net can be accessed from a computer at home but most of the time it cannot None of the other websites ever work on a computer at home So originally I work not sites on but Some computer, Nintendo do DS on work thought it was some virus that happened Some sites do not work on computer, but work on Nintendo DS to be picked up on all desktop computers and the laptop and Some sites do not work on computer, but work on Nintendo DS I have run multiple virus scans with AVG over the last several months to no avail Some things were found and removed but the problem was not solved I have turned off the Windows Firewall to see if I could access any of the sites at home and that did not work either One day at school I tried accessing the above websites on my laptop and they worked without a problem I also went a friend s house for a LAN weeks ago and I could access the websites on my desktop computer It made me thing that maybe it was something with the Netgear router we are using at home The fact that I can access the sites on my DS though makes me think that is not the problem Just in case I went to the router settings to see if somehow any of those sites got set to be blocked but there is nothing on the blocked sites list for the router I am at a loss as to what the problem could be since they work on the DS at home but not the computer and the computers can access them when they are connected to the internet somewhere besides at home When this problem first started happening I was on bit Windows XP and have since upgraded to bit Windows and I am still having the problem Any insight I can get would be greatly appreciated Thanks

One thing you can try that has worked for me and others with similar problem is changing your DNS server. You can always revert back if this does not resolve the problem or leave it. How to change to OpenDNS: Using OpenDNS On Your Windows Vista PC

A week ago, a strange clicking noise befalled us whenever we attempted to boot the system. The BIOS welcome screen would run for much longer than usual, and then a message "No internal hard drive found." would display. We thought it would be a hard drive error and replaced it.

Now, however, placing in a bootable OS installation CD does not work! Whenever we try, the computer acts like there is no CD (although sometimes the CD does begin to spin), and says there is no boot device available.

I have tried a Ubuntu CD, a Windows Vista CD, a Windows XP CD, and none of them work. It does not matter what CD you put in; it does not work.

So what is the problem? Is it fixable? Was it the hard drive that broke?

The system is a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop.

A:Solved: After upgrading hard drive for Inspiron 5150 laptop, CD drive does not work

Never mind, everyone! It turns out, after I took it out and put it back in, it worked again. Maybe a connection problem... who knows.

Couple of years ago, I spent a lof money and bought a Dell Precision 530. Base system w/ 2ghz Xeon (dual capable), 512 mb ram, nvidia quadro4 128mb graphics card. I've been using this system mostly for cad drafting, 3d modeling/rendering and it just feels very slow at the moment. I'm using Win 2000 pro.

Can you provide suggestions as to how I can upgrade this machine without spending more than $800? Is it worth it or should I try to get rid of it and buy a new system? Thanks.

A:Help in upgrading computer

I would say adding more ram and upgrading your vid card would make a pretty big difference. Especially more ram for the type of work you are doing.

Also if it has been a very long time without a reformat of your hard drive, you might notice a big difference in wiping your drive and re-installing Windows.

Although it would be nice...there is no way you can make/add in slots. What you have on your Motherboard is what you got.

WHat graphics card are you currently using?

A:Help concerning upgrading my computer

I'm sorry but none of your NewEgg links made it into your post. They have "..." in the cut/paste. Can you try editing/relinking or describing what the parts are?

It's also difficult to compare ATI and NVIDIA cards directly as they have different features and strengths/weaknesses. Putting these aside:
X800 XT ~ 6800 GT
X850 XT PE ~ 6800 Ultra

I do not believe NewEgg ships to Canada, but you may want to check. The only Canadian hardware source I know of is TigerDirect and they do not have nearly as good prices as NewEgg.

My son is upgrading his computer, what is the best manner in which transfer the XP OS to his new hard drive?

A:Upgrading Computer

I'd say...clone the hard drive.

End product is a drive containing everything on old drive...that will be bootable when it replaces the old drive.

I would then take the old drive, delete everything on it...reformat it and use it for additional storage, backups, etc.

Hi,

I currently have

Operating system : Microsoft windows XP professional (5.1, build 2600)
BIOS : Award Medallion v6.0
Processor : Intel Pentium III, ~800MHz
Memory : 256MB RAM
Video card : All-in-wonder 128 pro AGP (from ATI and its approx.total memory is 32 MB)
DirectX 9.0
Disk drive : QUANTUM FIREBALL AS20.5
Motherboard : I think its an ASUS mother board

Can I upgrade it to run games like Battlefield 2? I do not want to buy a new computer even though it is from 2001.., I've heard I can buy a new AMD 64 Sempron CPU to make it better and a new motherboard and a new video card and more RAM and maybe another hard drive I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and my budget is around 400$ :unch:

Try to explain something to me because I don't know THAT much about computers, believe it or not this is a 10 years old typing this message. :hotouch:

A:Upgrading an old computer!

I bet if you look around hard enough, want ads, your local (independent) computer store, ebay, you could find a P4 used with a decent video card
and still be able to grab a couple stix of ram with the budget you have.
Sometimes the P3 case will not support a P4 motherboard, so you would need a new case as well. Shop around, lots of people upgrade and sell nice comps all the time. Happy hunting!

could you give more specific information about your system?
cpu-z is a good, free and easy tool to retrieve valuable information from your system
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

the cpu might be ok but would be good to know if it is a celeron, dual core, hyper threaded, etc
also, what brand and model motherboard is need in order to recommend you any ram upgrade and/or video card..
you should be able to pick up a decent video card for under $100. something like a nvidia gt 240 or better a gt 430.
you should upgrade to 2 gb of ram with decent performance or 4gb if the price is right.

okay, so I have a Studio XPS 7100. And I would like to upgrade the graphics card (I do not know anything about computers). As far as I know, I would also need to upgrade my power supply. I would want to be able to play BattleField 3 on high settings. but as I said before, I know nothing about computers.

My questions:

What graphics card would I need?
What power supply would I need?
Would I need to upgrade anything else?
How do I know what parts will fit in my computer?

A:I need help upgrading my computer?

You would need to upgrade the power supply to support any of the current addon video cards.

That model uses a standard mid-tower case, so card size shouldn't be a factor for most cards. All you would need is a PCI-E slot on the motherboard and adequate power.

As for card selection, I'd recommend the fastest card that fits your budget.

Hi cfitzarl,
welcome back, I only know of you from your great posts in the gallery I have a couple of suggestions for you, if you don't mind coming in under budget. the Gigabyte board is a solid well performing board. the DFI is a personal favorite of mine, its more of a high performance board at a good price. the DFI board also has 2 pcie 2.0 slots if you decide that you want to up your gaming....uh...game..lol.
the HD 4850 will give you good performance up to 1680x1050 resolution with most games on high settings. a notch up from that would be the HD 4870 for good performance at 1920x1080. and yes we have pcie v2.0 now. its not a huge deal yet as no card out to date saturates the bandwidth of pcie 1.0 yet....although Nvidia is coming out with a monster card (the GTX 300) that might challenge that. anyway i own a similar DFI board and 3 of the 4850's and they perform wonderfully. from what needs you described, this seems like it may be a good fit and pairing for your x2 6000, let me know what you think and if I can help.

A:Upgrading my computer

Junk the computer.

Thats a waste of $160 (video card & RAM) for a computer that was built slow back in 2004~2005... so those parts would not be usable in a new computer.

$400 for this Compaq AMD would be better spent... too bad its not using the AMD chipset. You could build a better computer for about the same money... but since your nervous you just may want to upgrade the Compaq. You maybe able to sell your OLD PC for about $50 or so to go towards the upgrade/replacement.

There is nothing you can easily / worth-while reuse in a new built/parts.

If you built yourself (rough cost) similar to the Compaq (Windows7 costs the most):
$60 - AMD X2 CPU
$65 - Gigabyte AMD 740 board
$60 - 2GB DDR2 800Mhz ($80~90 for 4GB)
$60 - 450~500w (low-cost PSU - by my standards) or $70 for a 450w quality unit.
$60 - 500GB HD
$30 - DVD-RW drive
$40 - mouse & keyboard (far better quality than what comes with a desktop)
$50 - case (quality) - cheap stuff starts at $15... and looks cheap.
==========================
$425 Base parts
$110 Windows 7 Home OEM (OUCH - told ya)
---------------------------------------------
$535 Complete computer

$ 75 ATI 4670 video card PCIe

$610 Total

If you bought the Compaq and upgraded it to the custom build:
$400 + $135 (PSU and same 4670 video card) = $535.
*note: The desktop self-built system has more options and slightly faster CPU)

So thats the choices... look at how much MORE it would cost over just trying to upgrade the OLD computer. Which was about $210.... so for $325~400 extra, you'd get a much faster, modern computer... the HD is much faster, helps.

$210 = improved game graphics, but no upgrade path. CPU/PC will never go faster.
$535 = Upgraded Compaq... limited upgrade (CPU limited)
$610 = Clean hand-build... can easily upgrade to a X3 or X4 core CPU.

A:upgrading computer

First you need to make sure if that motherboard of yours will seat something like a 1ghz+ processor. That will make a world of difference in terms of difficulty and cost. It might cost as little as 120-150 dollars for that processor if you shop around, and only require you to pop out that old processor and heatsink. But, if the motherboard doesn't support your new processor, you'll have to buy another motherboard, which will cost you a good 100-150 plus the processor cost. Also, installing a motherboard is a big project if your sorta new, as I suspect you might be. I recently had a bad time with a motherboard (eeeh...we won't reflect on that). However, make sure you get decent cooling for that beast!

Hello Tech Guy community!

I have an eMachines W1050 Desktop in fully working condition with all the factory parts in it.
I want to spend no more than 500 dollars.

Is it possible to upgrade this computer with a new motherboard, video card, RAM, and CPU (or anything else) with this amount of money and be able to play most current games between mid-high detail running at at least 30 fps?

I would like this computer to end up with at least an i7 processor and a video card with at least 512mb of dedicated memory good enough to play, for example, Diablo III on max settings using a 1366x768 resolution setting, DDR3 RAM (any amount over 1GB) and a hard drive with a minimum of 250GB.

all the specs of the comp are in that link above. Any help would be appreciated.

Jamibi.

A:Upgrading Computer. Need help.

He should be able to run it but he might have to upgrade his power supply. I believe the 8800GTS requires a 400W or greater power supply with at least 26 amps on the +12V rail(s).

I couldn't find any power supply info on Packard Bell's site. Open the case and see if you can read the sticker on the side of the power supply. If you can't see it, it might be on the top of the power supply in which case you'll have to remove the PSU to read the sticker.

The outgoing Intel CPUs/chipsets/motherboards are looking like the real bargain at the moment, if you don't mind the "dead" socket thing. You can build a kick *** machine for a very tempting price if you shop around, and it will perform everyday computing tasks faster than the AMD equivalent and at least equal it in gaming prowess.

I'm soon to be rebuilding my computer: New graphics card, mother board, case, PSU, RAM, almost everything. I've been worried that I may need to do a fresh install of windows 7 (worried since my copy was OEM and I don't even have a disc for it). I've been using Windows 8 CP for the last few weeks, and I was wondering if there was a way to install that on my new machine instead of having to track down another copy of Windows 7? Or will just hooking my current harddrives into my new motherboard result in a painless start-up? (I've replaced computers before but never gone through a mass component-upgrade, so I'm a bit unsure how this works with a new motherboard being installed and everything).

MotherBoard- Genoa Socket 3 w/ 256k cache
Video Card- Trident 1 mb svga

CD-ROM- Acer 50x
Sound Card- Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16
Expansion Slots- 5 ISA (3 open), 3 ISA/VESA (1 open)
I am planning on upgrading as much as I can. I got this computer (parts and put it together myself) for around $150. I know I am going to upgrade to a 2mb video card. My questions are: What is the fastest processor you can have in a Socket3 mobo? (I've heard 133mhz) Would it help speed alot to upgrade to 64mb RAM if the processor is so slow? Is there any benefits to converting to FAT32 on such small hard drives? (I am using FAT) Thanks a ton!!

Ya get a Geforce 7800GS AGP card. It is about the best you can do on AGP. Other than that you need to do a complete overhaul to goto PCI-Express video cards. I just made the jump but the 7800gs did very well on most games @ 1280X1024. It will need a little more power so I would make sure your Power supply can handle it.

Hi there, novice here.

If someone is thinking of upgrading an old computer, what things limit a computer? IE, i know computers have limits on how much ram they can handle, what limits a computer in what processor it can handle, memory disk etc.

Me and a friend are thinking of doing up an old computer as abit of fun, just wondering what we need to look out for?

Any insight helpful.

Thanks.

I am currently using a laptop running Vista which has 2 gigs of ram in it, and it runs pretty slowly, both due to ram issues and a processor issue.

For Christmas, I bought myself:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16883229017

and today I bought 2 of:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141300

Which, when I get them into the box, will put me at 5 gigs of RAM, which is overkill I know, but the 2 gig sticks are just way too cheap and my ram at least will be future proofed.

Anyways, is there anything I need to know about the interaction of the ram and the Vista? It's the Home Premium version that comes with the PC.

Also, should I get the computer formatted and up and running, then install the 2 new sticks of ram, or just put them in there and boot with them the very first time?

A:New Computer Ram upgrading

ok I have an HP Pavilion desktop that I got last april for my 8th grade graduation. I want to upgrade the CPU but I don't know if the motherboard can handle it. How can I find out? Also, I want to upgrade my computer with more RAM. Right now I have 512MB of DDR RAM. The computer manual says its expandable to 1GB of RAM, can I go higher without damaging anything? My dad's IBM told him not to go higher than 256MB and he's running 384MB with no problems. Thanx in advance.

A:upgrading computer

What HP Pavilion do you own? With Brand Name systems its best to contact the manufacturer to see what will work when it comes to CPU's. Generally these systems don't provide as much upgradeability aas opposed to customed built systems.

As for the RAM, this is depenedent on the chipset - chipsets only support a certain amount. You can check at www.crucial.com to see what they say for RAM type and amount.

Will that work with my current set up? Or would i need to upgrade other areas first?

Thanks in advance,

I've had my eye on an GeForce GTX 660 2GB for quite some time.I have a standard Dell XPS 8500 right now and I'm planning on upgrading it sometime. Some concerns I have are if I will need modular power for this as well as if my computer will be able to handle this card? It currently has a 460W power supply, but some have told me I will need modular power in order to run this card. I am positive that it won't bottleneck considering I run an I7 processor right now. I could use another computer expert's opinion on if it would be able to work with this card! Thanks!

A:Upgrading my computer

I'm not sure why you were told, you need a modular power supply. Modular is helpful in cable management for cosmetic purposes. Modular is nice but it is not a requirement. I currently have a MSI GTX 660 and my power supply is Corsair CX600V2 600W, which is not modular.

Looking at the specifications for Dell XPS 8500, I don't foresee an issue. The GTX 660 requires a 450W power supply, and your PSU supplies 460W.

By the way, were you the one I replied to on Newegg?

A:upgrading computer

I requested this thread be moved to Hardware.

You can't connect 2 computers together for "double the power". It doesn't work that way. eMachines are very low-end computers with puny power supplies and minimal cooling. The only safe options would be memory and hard drive.

I am not a expert computer person. I need help. I decided to upgrade my computer instead of buying another one. I would like to start with the processor. If someone would be so kind and please tell me if I need to replace the motherboard also if i want to upgrade my processor.

My specs are:
AMD Anthlon XP 1600

Also, what processor would you recommend I upgrade to and if another motherboard is needed what would that be.

Thank you,

A:Upgrading my computer

If you go to the manufacturer's site for the motherboard it will have a list of all the supported processors, just find the fastest to maximise your systems performance.

If it is an older motherboard you may find the maximum increase in performance that you can achieve replacing the processor simply won't be worth the money.

There are a huge number of motherboards to choose from, what you need to decide first is what you are going to use the system for, if it is going to be for gaming then you will be looking for a fairly high performance mobo and CPU. You should carefully check that any new board will be compatible with your existing memory or you will also need to replace that. Likewise with the power supply. Then if you will be gaming you will also need a good graphics card.

If the PC will just be for general everyday use then you should find a package available from most good suppliers that will include a mobo, memory and CPU. Then you just need to check your power supply.

Things to watch out for. If you stick with the old power supply make sure the connectors are compatible with any new mobo. Another problem that can occur with a new mobo is the front panel connectors may need to be altered.

Any more questions, please ask. It will help if you can provide the make and model of your existing power supply and motherboard.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

That new set of kit should definately give you a performance increase over your current setup, however there are things that you must look at / consider.

1) Exactly what make and model power supply are you going to use? Your current one may not be up to the job.
2) That board only supports DDR2 RAM, it would be better to look for a DDR3 board for future proofing a bit more.
3) Its a MicroATX board, ensure your current case can support it.

Hello Chips, could it be that the 580 is running out of Vram? What does it have 1.5gb?

Have you been able to monitor the CPU and GPU to see how much of what it's using? That should track down what you need to improve.

If it is running out of Vram then I would recommend a 4GB 670 or 680 depending on how much you want to spend.

A:Upgrading RAM on my computer

I am wondering what the CL 5 & 6 difference is, it may be meaningless or significant.  Try searching the net to clarify what it means, if it does not have any effect I would grab the Ebay ram.

I got nosy and did the search there is about a 2% difference in speed, IMO you would never notice such a slight difference!

Hello, I have a three or four year old computer and i have been looking to upgrade it, since i do not have enough money to buy a new one.
What i am looking to improve is FPS, basically a smoother MMORPG gaming experience. I also would appreciate if you give me any pointers on any specific parts that are cheap but also do the job well.
Here is my info:

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.60 GHz
768MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c
SAPPHIRE RADEON 9600 ATLANTIS 256 MB
Driver : ati2dvag.dll

Thanks so much in advance.
Cheers.

A:Looking for help on upgrading computer

Hi Demon,
well definitely a GPU upgrade for gaming, however with that P-4, the biggest I would go is a gts 250, or a HD 4850. If you want DX 11 a HD 5670.

I want to upgrade my graphics card but I have integrated SiS Mirage2 graphics card. I want to know how to disable them to put in a nvidia GeForce FX5700 PCI I am new to all this upgrading stuff so any help would be nice.

A:Upgrading my computer

On my gigabyte board with intel integrated graphics it auto disabled the integrated and detected my 6200. If it doesn't auto detect there should be a bios setting to set the display device to (pci/agp/intgrated/onboard/whatever), choose pci if you have the option.

A:Upgrading computer

Without upgrading the motherboard you won't be able to add the AMD FX6200 as the socket type is different (the FX6200 is AM3+ whereas your motherboard appears to LGA775), and that motherboard (Dell 0N826N) only supports up to 8GB DDR2 RAM.
You'd also have to find out the wattage of your PSU if you're looking at adding a GPU, from what I can find your machine only has a 250W PSU but I may have that wrong.

I plan on updating with a new motherboard CPU and more ram. I understand that Microsoft considers this a new computer and my version of Windows 10 won't work. I have an OEM of Windows 7. Can I use the code from Windows 7 to get a working copy of Windows 10 or am I stuck using Windows 7.

After the new upgrade(Anniversary update) whenever it gets to you, or if you are currently using Insider builds, and then link your Microsoft account to your PCs digital license, you can use this tutorial: Activation Troubleshooter - Use in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

If anyone could mention what he can actually upgrade into it would be greatly appreciated. Just to clarify; wanting to know what graphics cards/processors are compatible with my friends computer. Hi
i got this compaq presario, with an athlon thunderbird 1,4 gzh processor , 640 mb pc 133 ram, a 20 gb hdd ide 60, 250 watts psu and a nvidia vanta 8mb graphic card (agp 2x).
The chipset is via kt133, i read about that chipset and only support 4x agp and 64 mb on a video card.
I was searching and i found a geforce ti 4400 card, with all the specifications above, so i was planning to buy it, but then i found that its a directx8.1 card, Its worth trying to find a directx 9 card for this cpu?
i read that the geforce fx series sucks and the geforce ti were better cards. The only difference is the directx support.
Maybe i can find an ATI card? i need some help please
(dont tell me to buy another computer, i cant afford one and i got another decent cpu , i just want to play games using both of them)
Thanks

A:Help me upgrading graphics on my old computer

Th 1.4Ghz athlon is good, prrobably better than a low pentium 4. You will probably need a new PSU, and a 4/8X AGP card will run in 4X mode on your chipset. As long as it is a 7800GS or less lol.

Okay, so I think my hard drive is going to die sometime soon. I'm thinking about buying a new one (once I've saved-up for it). Found some eBuyer, but I was wondering; how do I know the new drive will work with everything else in my computer?

I don't want to buy one, try and fit it and then find it's not compatable. But I don't know what to check or anything like that.

Any advice would be great. ^_^

I recently purchased 4 GB of DDR3 Kingston RAM (1600 MHz, 1.35V) in order to replace my 2GB of DDR2 RAM and my computer wont boot.

These are my specs:
Motherboard: ASRock N68C-S UCC
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core 5200+

I think that I might've bought too powerful ram or something? But since the motherboard page says that it supports Dual Channel DDR3 1600 RAM I thought I would have no problem with this RAM.

I also checked for RAM voltage in BIOS and it says it only supports from 1.5V -1.9V or something like that, so might that be the problem since the new RAM is 1.35V?

I'm also running Windows XP, is that maybe the issue here?

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Computer not booting after upgrading RAM.

Welcome to the forum. If you put the old ram back does it boot ok. Are you running a 64bit windows if not you cant use all the 4 gig of ram

I have an old Fujitsu Sylistic 5112 Tablet PC and am thinking about upgrading it to Win 8. It only has 4GB of ram (the max it takes). Should I go ahead and do a 64bit install or just 32bit.

the processor is: intel mobile core 2 duo u7700.

thanks,

Mike

A:Upgrading Older computer to Win 8

As it is abit old use x32, but first check for all the drivers on the Fujitsu web site.

well there really isnt too much sense to upgraded something that old although is sounds like war hammer doesnt have very high requirements. you should run belarc advisor to get better idea of what your specs are but it looks like an old amd socket A mb with agp gfx and pc3200 ram. ususal for games you want a decent gfx card i dont see what you have now.
more than likely you will need everything new except you cdrom drive and new dvd burners are only like $25 so you are looking at probably case, psu, mb, ram, cpu, gfx card, sata hdd, dvd burner probably get something decent for around $700
